Now what's really interesting though is when you can combine posture and gesture into something like FACS. To some degree we do this already on an automatic level, but of course my interest is on a conscious level...and we can thank Pascal Beverly Randolph for some suggestions toward that. In his book Sexual Magic, he discusses a concept called Posism, which is a method where you use body language, gestures, and postures as a way of embodying a concept or emotion you want to work with magically. You can see some of his stage magician background with this technique, but I'd be interested in finding out if he was influenced by 18th century rhetoric schools which taught rhetoricians poses and gestures that could be used to evoke emotional responses from their audiences.

For Posism to work the magician creates a mental state which s/he associates with the gesture. The idea is that the gesture then creates the thought, which in turn acts as an influence on both the magician and the environment around hir. Sounds an awful lot like NLP anchoring, doesn't it? Actually you can probably base some of the influence of ritual poses in Western Magic on Yoga, but also PBR's Posism techniques.

In anycase, Posism, combined with NLP techniques and FAC  might provide some intriguing possibilities in terms of creating different emotional states and other altered states of consciousness through the use of body posture, gesture, facial expression, and of course anchoring. I don't know enough about FACS yet, but I've started using Posism and NLP for certain engagements and it's proving helpful...so when I learn more I'll be sure to update.

Understanding Divine Knowledge from God--Part One

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

This verse begins with the word "for" which is translated from the Greek word hoti. One of the other English words for this Greek word is "because”.  Because God performed a certain divine act in the life of the believer, there was a manifested change in the mind of the believer.  The manifested change came in the form of divine revelation knowledge concerning the glory (doxa) of God.  Because God infused, (breathed into the spirit) of the believer, this came about.  This is the working of regeneration as a part of the salvation plan of God.  This regenerative act is a part of 2 Corinthians 5:17  speaks of the "newness" the believer. What was old has passed away, and replaced with all things new.  Our minds have been renewed through this divine act (Romans 12:2).  We have been made alive by God's Spirit.  Old things--concepts and perceptions have been replaced with fresh spiritual enlightenment. This spiritual enlightenment is an ongoing process in the life of the believer. This renewal process began at the moment we accepted salvation.  Now we are responsible to walk in the light as He is in the light on daily basis.  This will help us to learn the new spiritual knowledge of Him through our growing relationship with Him. 

The action God performed came through a commandment.  The word "command" comes from the Greek word epo, which finds its root in a primary verb, which is used, only in the definite past tense.  The other tenses of this word are borrowed from the Greek word ereo which is translated into English as say 57 times, speak 7 times, tell 4 times and speak of 2 times for a total of 71 times in the King James Version.  It means to utter, to speak, or say.  The other alternate form of epo is rheo, which can be understood as a pouring forth.  In this divine act of God, He poured forth into the new life of the redeemed the knowledge of His glory. 

God broke the silence that had existed for 400 years.  All man had to go on was the laws and commandments that had been received by Moses on Mount Sinai.  Since then, many more man-made laws had been added making the total number of laws 613.  To break one of these laws was to break the whole law.  These inconsistencies were among the many things that Jesus pointed out to his disciples. It was time for humanity to hear and receive the revealed Truth of the One True living God.  It was time for them to come to the knowledge of truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ--God's only begotten Son.  It was time to set the record straight.  It was time for humanity to get the true description of Who He was, and the love He had in His heart for them.

Since we have been given this knowledge, it should be understood that no man could successfully preach and be of much good if they do not have a working relationship with the Lord and His Written Word.  The individual mind cannot vacillate and hesitate concerning the gospel of Jesus Christ nor did the life that must lead.  When the mind is filled with doubts, there is no faith.  When there is timidity in doing the work of the Lord, then the boldness that is promised has not been received.  The individual who declares what he has no acquaintance with the Lord cannot be effective.  If there is no deep-felt conviction concerning the words written in the Bible, then how can this individual be effective for the kingdom of heaven?  There is a lack of understanding concerning what the individual affirms.  How can they stand by something that they do not understand? 

What then should be the standard by which to measure the effectiveness of a person's words concerning Jesus and His gospel?  This lesson teaches that there must be God-given spiritual enlightenment.  The individual must be God-breathed upon in order to receive the right illumination.  There are illuminations that have their source in the rulers of darkness, and then there is the true Illuminator who shines through to the heart causing a change.  There must be a relationship developed through personal interaction and experience with Jesus Christ.

Les universités ont été invitées par la commission Université-Emploi à proposer dès le mois prochain une « pré-inscription » aux élèves de Terminale. Si certaines l’ont refusée, comme Paris-I, par peur d’ouvrir une porte à la sélection, 59 universités sur 85, de Paris IV à Paul-Verlaine (Metz), l’ont adoptée. Cette procédure se veut une information, appelée « orientation positive », dans le jargon du ministère, donnée aux étudiants sur leurs chances de réussite. Les lycéens qui le souhaitent feront donc examiner leur dossier scolaire par l’université, qui se contentera de donner un avis, favorable ou défavorable. Ce ne sera toutefois qu’un avis...

Cependant, certains y voient le signe précurseur d’un écrémage à l’entrée de l’université. L’Unef exprime « de grandes inquiétudes » à ce sujet et renouvelle sa dénonciation d’une « sélection masquée ». Le syndicat Sud-Etudiant, dans un éditorial daté du 11 janvier, craint lui aussi l’engrenage : « Concernant le dispositif d’orientation des lycéens, s’il ne s’agit pas officiellement de sélection dans un premier temps, on peut deviner l’avenir de ce dispositif dans les années prochaines. D’abord il s’agira d’un avis juste amical, puis, rentré dans les moeurs, il deviendra plus ferme et de fait, sera sélectif. »

La sélection, hors-la-loi

Derrière elle se réfugient les pourfendeurs de la sélection, contre elle s’insurgent ses plus fervents défenseurs : la loi Savary, datant du 26 janvier 1984, alimente à nouveau le débat. « Les dispositions relatives à la répartition entre les établissements et les formations excluent toute sélection », stipule l’article 14. La sélection est interdite. Certes.

Cependant, tous les ans, des milliers de jeunes ressortent non diplômés, souvent déçus, après une, ou deux, ou trois années sur les bancs de l’université. Ils représentent ainsi 20 % d’étudiants, soit 80 000 bacheliers sortant du système sans autre diplôme. Beaucoup y voient la sélection à l’œuvre, une « sélection par l’échec ». Alexandre Hascouet, membre du bureau national de l’UNI, prône une sélection « plus claire, lisible est transparente, car elle existe déjà ; mais elle est hypocrite. » En modifiant la loi Savary ? Pour Marie Rouchier, étudiante en Physique-Chimie à l’université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris VI, « La loi doit rester inchangée, et la sélection proscrite. Certains trouvent leur voie, s’épanouissent à l’université malgré des années de tâtonnement. Si un système sélectif se met en place, certains de ceux-là n’auront pas la chance qui, aujourd’hui, leur est offerte.»

Concert d’interprétations

« Evidemment. » Dans son discours du 10 janvier 2007, le ministre de l’Education Nationale n’a pas voulu provoquer de remous, soulignant d’emblée à propos du dispositif d’orientation active qu’« il ne s'agit évidemment pas de sélection.» La simple évocation du mot « sélection » éveille toutefois les passions et suscite les interprétations les plus contraires. Dans les bureaux silencieux de certaines universités, on dit ainsi que le ministre n’a pas eu l’audace de parler franchement : « Ce sont des politiques, et les politiques ne veulent plus utiliser les mots parce qu’il y a eu des étudiants qui gueulaient dans la rue… », déplore Dominique Roux, enseignant-chercheur à Paris-Dauphine et l’un de ses fondateurs. Le président de l’Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, Jean-Robert Pitte, quant à lui, renchérit : « Mais je réagis mal ! Je réagis mal, et en même temps je comprends un ministre qui ne peut pas, à trois mois d’une élection présidentielle, braver la loi. » Dans les locaux bruyants de certains syndicats, on craint plutôt une trop grande prudence dans l’emploi des mots : « Les mesures avancées sous le nom d’ « orientation » sont en fait la voie ouverte à la sélection. C’est un nouveau mensonge du ministère ! », s’exclame Anouk Colombani, porte-parole du syndicat Sud-Etudiant. « On pressent bien que ce qu’ils veulent, c’est la réintroduction de la sélection. Il y a beaucoup de flou dans ce discours : qui organisera les rendez-vous avec les élèves ? N’y aura-t-il pas une sélection par le découragement ? » s’inquiète aussi Gabriel Szeftel, de l’Unef.

Dauphine, poisson-pilote de l’avenir universitaire ?

L’une des rares universités à sélectionner a le vent en poupe. Certains étudiants préfèrent Dauphine aux grandes écoles, et son taux de 85% de réussite est à faire pâlir d’envie Nanterre, qui stagne sous la barre des 40%. Mais c’est aussi son système sélectif, enraciné dès l’origine dans l’université de « Gestion des organisations », qui représente parfois un véritable modèle. Créée en 1968, Dauphine a rapidement choisi la sélection pour faire face aux flux massifs de demandes, en ne prenant que les mentions au bac. Quelques années ont passé sans que nul ne s’en plaigne. Premiers recours, premières condamnations. L’université a alors cherché un autre mode sélectif pour contourner la loi. « On s’est dit : les prépas, les grandes écoles sélectionnent comme des malades, et on ne leur dit rien, on les bénit », raconte Dominique Roux. « Donc on a voulu faire comme eux !» A la fac installée dans les anciens locaux de l’OTAN, les dossiers scolaires ont commencé à être examinés avant l’entrée en premier cycle. Il y eut un procès, puis deux, puis soixante-dix par an. Tous perdus, évidemment. La découverte, à Compiègne, d’une université pratiquant légalement la sélection -la seule en France-, représente bientôt une solution pour l’établissement qui « s’empresse de l’imiter ». Depuis deux ans, Dauphine, qui demeure une université mais jouit maintenant du statut de « grand établissement », pratique ainsi la sélection en toute légalité. « Avec Sciences Po, Dauphine constitue désormais un modèle pour certains », souligne Dominique Roux. « Quel que soit le résultat le résultat des élections prochaines, je pense d’ailleurs qu’il y aura un mouvement en faveur d’un système plus proche du nôtre. De toute façon, les autres universités ne pourront pas rester dans ce bordel ! » Seront-elles prêtes à imiter leur consoeur ? La question reste en suspens.

Il y a quelque mois, vous disiez qu’il faudrait pousser l’université à « s'engager au plus tôt dans la voie de la sélection » : êtes-vous toujours convaincu de cela ?

J’en suis encore plus convaincu. Je pense que l’orientation positive comme on est en train de la mettre en place est insuffisante, et qu’il faut donc absolument mettre en oeuvre une sélection : c’est le moyen le plus démocratique de répondre à cette nécessité pour les jeunes Français de faire de plus en plus d’études, toujours meilleures… Mais pas n’importe comment, pas n’importe où, pas à n’importe quel prix et pas sur des coups de tête ou des caprices comme c’est le cas actuellement.

L’université ne doit-elle pas cependant être garante des principes républicains, et donc de l’université pour tous ?

Pour moi, ce ne sont pas des principes républicains ; c’est une République dévoyée qui fait ça ! Parce que la sélection par l’échec, c’est ce qu’il y a de pire, c’est ce qui crée le plus de rancœur et d’aigreur chez les jeunes. Quand vous êtes éliminés par l’échec, très rapidement, et encore plus quand c’est moins rapidement, qu’est-ce qu’il vous reste, sinon vos yeux pour pleurer ? La République est là pour accompagner, pour aider les gens à trouver leur meilleure voie possible : elle n’est pas démagogique, elle dit les choses et elle fait les choses ! Il faut retrouver la tradition de la IIIème République, qui est une République méritocratique, et qui accorde ses faveurs, si je puis dire, en tous cas ses diplômes, au mérite, et pas sur des principes de fausse charité.

Pourquoi certaines universités ont-elles refusé le système de pré-inscription applicable en février ?

Parce que l’Unef, qui est le principal syndicat étudiant actuellement -bien qu’il représente une cabine téléphonique parce qu’il n’y a que 3% d’étudiants qui votent dans les conseils- considère que c’est un acte préalable à une sélection, qui, un jour ou l’autre, interviendra. De fait, ils n’ont pas tort… Ils mettent le doigt sur le fait qu’il y ait ce contact avant l’entrée à l’université entre ce que nous représentons, notre communauté, les professeurs, etc., et les élèves de lycée. Ce qui me paraît excellent. Il est évident qu’il faut ça ! Les élèves ne savent même pas ce qu’il y a à l’université. Ils vivent sur un rêve.

Que pensez-vous du fonctionnement de l’université Dauphine, qui a instauré une forme de sélection à l’entrée du premier cycle ? Est-ce un modèle, ou un cas isolé ?

Je suis bien d’accord avec ce qu’ils ont fait ! Ils ont pratiqué illégalement la sélection pendant vingt ans, et puis ils ont eu de nombreux procès… Mais maintenant qu’ils ont un statut spécifique, ils pratiquent la sélection. Et ils ont pleinement le droit de le faire. Donc, c’est formidable !

Lequel des candidats à la présidentielle serait plus apte, selon vous, à agir dans ce sens ?

Je n’en sais rien pour le moment. Je pense que quel que soit l’élu, il devra faire cette réforme. Sans quoi la France s’enfoncera.

Example staining procedure:

1a) Suspend 2 x 10^5 cells in 50 uL PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) containing 1% bovine serum albumin and 2 ug/mL fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled LCA.

1b) For the control, do the same thing above, replacing the FITC-labeled LCA with a 1/100 dilution of FITC-labeled streptavidin (which lacks glycosylation)

2) Incubate both mixtures at 4°C for 30 min, then analyze stained cells by FACScalibur.

*There are two types of oligosaccharides found attached to proteins by glycosylation: the N-linked oligos are attached to the amino group of asparagine side chains, and the O-linked oligos are attached to the hydroxyl of serine and threonine side chains.

I've included what would be needed for a non-breakable system for the animators, it includes (in green) some 10 more additional targets needed. In total there's some 30 targets for 6 base shapes. What key with a combination network system is:

• How many connections a corrective has.
• And how these are connected.

If we split the system down into essentially 'stacks' then it can become easier to understand, the first stack is an order of 1 -this is the base stack, then 2 then 3 and so on; for each corrective in its appropriate stack its has the same amount of inputs as the order of the stack. What becomes interesting is the connections, in most cases the last stack drives the next but we also have unique connections such as a 2 stack corrective (6 + 9)  driving a 5th stack corrective jumping 3 stacks.

Whats also important in this system is compiling the network when you change a corrective in a stack. On each stack all you need to be doing is generating a corrective and the inputs it requires - compiling this network would go through the connections a build the correctives. What the user see's/modifies is the final corrective - which is infact a mathmatical 'messed up' target working behind the scenes. Whether this is realtime generated thing or a procedural 'compiling ' step depends. Then later takes your 'asthetic' target, looks at its inputs and generates the real corrective.

The network is non-comunicative in terms of process - its a left to right system with all the corrective looking only at there inputs with a simple sorting method.

On the left are the base targets - the action units. From left to right the orange nodes are the corrective targets  needed - you have to build them in this order as for target "1 + 2 + 4 + 5" you need "1+4+2", "1+4+5" and "2+4+5" then "1+4", "4+5"!!

Dont get me started on how many you need to link to the mouth and well the mouth targets themselves!!!

The Family Portrait

The math behind corrective poses can ofcourse be script so it becomes a simple task of making the combination look right, and behind the scenes do that math to make the corrective shape. For bone and muscle type setups, you'd need ways of storing all transforms of all the joints/controls used in the face as if they were verts and do some corrective transform math to build the corrective pose.

As to making  the poses, there seems to be some governing rules, for one, the order of making the corrective shapes. Take for example an n-space of 3 (basically a point3 space, 3 dimensions) , essentially three sliders - we have around 7 poses existing in this space: [1,0,0], [0,1,0], [0,0,1], [1,0,1], [1,1,0], [0,1,1] and [1,1,1]

The last [1,1,1] has to be built last, because it by it's very nature is the combination of everying, and likewise [1,0,0] , [0,1,0] and [0,0,1]  should be made first as there the initial single poses.  What happens between these is the tricky part , and especially [1,0,1]. [1,1,0]  is a simple extension of [1,0,0] - so deducting from that [1,1,0], [1,0,1], [0,1,1] should be the order, we model the corrective poses.

• A n-space comprised of weights
• A set of targets (i.e shapes)
• An orgin/neutral shape
• A vector (the sum of the weights)

The old ideas of standard blendshapes basically go out the window, but the power you gain is pretty amazing - and in theory can be used for any facial type setup including bones and muscle rigs.

In simple terms, you associate a target(shape) to a weight,this for all instances is standard blendshape stuff - but with n-space combinations you can associate a target to more than one weight.

 For example lets say we have two targets: A and B, and there respective weights: w1[1,0] and w2[0,1] remember weights exist in an n-space so if there was 3 it would be as follow w1[1,0,0] , w2[0,1,0]  and w3 [0,0,1]. These do nothing atm, until we associate a target(s) to them so e.g target a is associated to w1 at [0.5,0] ( a target doesnt have to be at 1 of the weight)

 Still follow? Well simply put we define a space from weights so point1 would be just one weight, a point2 would be 2 weights and a point3 would be three weights.. and so on. If we have a space of the nth number its an n-space so if we have 30 weights, i.e sliders in our rig we have.... yes..... an n-space of 30 dimensions!

Now the clever part comes in that the system basically cant break. The cool part comes in that you can associate a target shape to 1 or more weights(sliders)! so say we set weight w1 at a value of 1 so [1,0] and w2 the same [0,1] we now have a combined value of: [1,1] and this shape combination may not work. So we associate a new shape to this weight vector.

All that changing the value of the weights does is that it moves a vector through the space of what its comprise of eg. 3 weights [.3,0,0] [0,.2,0] [0,0,.7]  we have a vector in this space: [0.3,0.2,0.7].

What i dont fully understand is achieving the final, delta. But im working on it - the funny thing is Jason Osipas setup is very reminesent of this n-space idea, working in planes etc. And could easily i think be adapted to work with it.
