So, here is the thing with me.

As much as I love horror movies of just about every variety I really enjoy the ones that do something a little different. Even if they crash and burn, at least they tried. Thankfully that isn't the case with Final Destination.

Here is the story in a nutshell. Alex (Devon Sawa) and his classmates are going to France for their senior trip. That is until Alex has a premonition of the plane blowing up after take off. He then freaks out and along with some of his friends is removed from the flight. Naturally he is right, and we get to see the jet explode just after it takes off, as he said it would, thus sparing his life, and those of his friends. Now comes the fun part. It seems that by getting off that plane, these kids have cheated death, and now the death is coming to find them one by one.

What normally happens in teen horror movies is that we have some kind of killer who stalks them, and picks them off one at a time, usually because they are brainless enough to split up Scooby Doo style. Here we have death itself, just a force of nature that does Its best to take them in a variety of unique ways. Also, the kids in this particular movie were smart enough to figure out that there is a pattern at work. Death is killing them off in the order they would have died if they had been on the plane. That information isn't much help to them in the long run, but at least they try to help each other a bit.

To sum things up, this was a decent concept that worked for the most part. It had some interesting lighting and camera work, and of course some nice special effects for the big death scenes. And not to give too much away, but somebody had to survive. There were two sequels made. : )

3. Still Fighting It

Tegami - Haikei Jyuugo no Kimi e - (Letter - to You When You Were Fifteen) is Angela Aki's eighth single, and it was released on September 10th, 2008.

Well, it certainly has been a while! One entire year without anything from Angela Aki. Many will have been waiting for this; and Tegami - Haikei Jyuugo no Kimi e - was worth the wait. I like everything about the song. The song makes use of strictly the piano, but all the better. I've always liked Angela Aki's voice, but her voice on this song is just perfect. Of course, since there are only two things—vocals and piano—in this song, her vocals better be. The first half of the song remains calm, except for those moments when her voice heightens, which I listen to now with absolute relish, but after that it becomes more outgoing, with the eventual addition of clapping, a more powerful piano and a chorus of people singing "keep on believing".

Final Destination is more pop-oriented than the A-Side, and sounds more like the stuff from Today. It begins, as almost always, with the piano and vocals, but drums and guitar are added later. I don't like B-Sides very much, as you might be able to tell, but this one's is pretty good.

Still Fighting It is a cover of the song by Ben Folds, in Japanese with a bit of English. I haven't listened to the original, but I have heard Ben Folds Five perform Burt Bacharach's "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", and I liked it. A nice addition to a really nice single.

# I don't generally write posts reflecting what I really feel.

I had a dream yesterday. After watching psycho movies like 'SAW' and 'Final Destination' during my weekend night-out, I slept at around 5:30 in the morning and woke up at 1:00 pm afternoon due to nightmare. Since generally dreams are too stupid, I won't bore you going into its details. So in brief here's what I saw:

"I was in the first floor of a building which probably looked like my school. I was tied to a pillar (just like they do in the movie, 'SAW') and a few boys and girls were hitting me with steel rods. I was hurt, badly hurt. I struggled, I broke the ties and grabbed a steel rod. I was now fighting back (like a hero), hitting everyone coming into my way with the rod. I was horrified, restless and mad. I was smashing and smashing everyone. Suddenly I hit someone on the head with my steel rod. The person turned towards me and I realised she was 'her'. I had hit her. I saw her eyes conveying pain. She fainted. And I was left to cry. What I'd done!"

I woke up with tears in my eyes. I really wanted to cry and so I cried. I was missing her. I'd always wanted to leave Bhopal so that I can forget her easily. But it seems I was wrong.

Since she never reads my blog, I can safely write a few things here. It was her birthday yesterday. I called her up, talked for a while. She always tries to sound happy. She has changed, at least for me. And its really hard to accept that. Its been over two months for me in IIT, still unable to figure out if I am really happy in here. There must be something crucial, because otherwise I would have not thought about it.

Baatein Bhool Jaati Hai

Yaadein Yaad Aati Hai.

I feel alone here. There are many good and caring friends around, still I find myself alone. What's the reason everytime I am lonesome when I return from Insti to hostel in the evening. Whenever I enter my room, there's no one there. I do my lunch alone and dinner alone. Sometimes my friends ask me, "Kaha rehta hai tu?" Even I don't know the answer.

May be I am the one who's responsible for this. I am resisting change. Its me who wants to stay alone so that I can cherish my memories. I miss my mom, my family, my friends, my school and her. I miss days when I was preparing for IIT JEE. Actually I've figured out, preparing for JEE is like having sex. You try hard, want to get the ending desperately and when you become successful, you experience the ultimate satisfaction. But is that what you wanted???

No.

The satisfaction won't lasts long and after a few hours you need to have sex one more time. That's my condition probably. I am restless & confused now, living a visionless life. I don't even know what should I do. All I do everyday is to pray to God. That's it.

I tried so hard

And got so far

But in the end

It doesn't even matter.

***

PS -- Now feeling much better.

PS -- Should I request you all not to ask me about the girl I've mentioned.

PS -- One more thing that makes me nervous are the bomb blasts in Delhi. :(

PS -- Dear God, please do something. Innoncent people are dying.

PS -- Must see: Saw 1,2,3,4 & 5.

PS -- Girl Next Door - Elisha Cuthbert.......Umm...mm..mm.. ;)

PS -- Adios.

Tracklisting
1. Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~ (紙 ～拝啓　十五の君へ～ , lit. Letters ~To Your 15 Year Old Self~)
2. final destination
3. Still Fighting It
4. Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~ (Strings Version)

Tegami is Angela Aki's 8th single overall, and was released on the 17th of September, 2008. It is the first single in her newest era.

I'm sure Angela fans have been waiting for this single for quite a while, and I doubt many will be disappointed with the result. Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~ is a simple song that relies heavily on Angela's vocals and the piano, and while I don't really see it as an overly sad song just from listening to it, it definitely gives you a feeling of melancholy. Angela's voice is once again full of emotion, and the minimal accompaniment to the instrument and Angela's vocals helps makes the song seem a lot more sincere, which helps further the mood. At around 3:00, the song actually takes an upbeat turn, with a happier piano tune, clapping in the background, and some back-up vocals that could be heard ad libbing throughout the song. The "la la la ~Keep on believin'~" segment also helps give a bit more meaning to the song, and it all ends by turning back into a simple piano ballad. While it lacks change for the majority of the song, I think the emotion it carries helps to further the song.

The next song is a lot different in comparison. final destination is a pop song, quite reminiscent of Otome Gokoro from her TODAY album. It once again opens with just Angela singing and the piano playing, but is soon followed by the instruments you should come to expect from an Angela Aki pop song, namely the drums and guitar. The sudden movement into the chorus is surprisingly well done, but something still ends up sounding a bit generic, when it comes to this song. It's definitely a great song, but it lacks the level of emotion that Tegami had, and it ends up coming off as seeming a little emotionless, despite how much feeling she continues to put into her vocals.

The final new song on the single is Still Fighting It, a cover of the song of the same name by the American singer Ben Folds, former member of the band Ben Folds Five. The song is converted into Japanese, with a few English phrases popping up throughout. It once again focuses mainly on the piano, and sounds a lot more like a ballad than Tegami does, as it has a more downcast feeling to it. However, being placed after final destination makes the previous song come off as even more emotionless, but it's the emotion that Angela puts into the song that makes it sound as good as it does, and both songs are brilliant in their own respects.

The Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~ Strings Version sounds exactly the same as the original, with one obvious addition: Strings. They aren't present all throughout the verses, but they always come in at exactly the right time to make the song that I originally expected Tegami to be, instead of the piano ballad that it turned out as. But by no means is the original inferior: They just both carry their emotions at different levels due to the different instruments, and the lone piano in the original version still allows the song to sound more sincere, while the strings in this version give the emotion a more powerful presence in the song. It's really up to which you prefer.

Single Score
A+

Favorite Song
Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~, Still Fighting It

Every song on this single sounds great, and as a whole, it was definitely worth the wait that we were forced through after we got TODAY. The only gripe I really had was how final destination sounds a bit bland in comparison to the ballads on this single, but that's easily forgiven if you're a fan of her pop songs. The different levels of emotions in the three ballads, and the laid back style of final destination help keep the single interesting throughout.

Zucht.

In the movie "Cars" the folks at Pixar teach us that life is a highway and we should enjoy the journey. Lightening McQueen discovers that the trip to the race is often times more important than the race or even the prize.

Now I know my mind can't comprehend the awesomeness of heaven and to compare it to a trophy you might get for driving a car around in circles is a grossly unfair analogy. Having said that though here I go...

As Christians, it is easy to get too focused on the final prize and forget about the journey. As Leonard Sweet reminds us in his book 11, to "keep our eyes on the prize" doesn't mean we keep our feet from walking in the park, our mouths from savoring Godiva chocolate, or our noses from lily of the valley flowers. And while these things may seem trivial Sweet says, "If you don't meet God along the way, you'll never meet God at the destination."

This is one of the many constant tensions we live in as Christians. We want to keep our eyes on the prize, but we also don't want to miss the glimpses of heaven God may be providing us here on earth. I guess all I'm saying is I don't want to forget to enjoy the journey. Any thoughts?

Testa_ross4 : ... looks like the clip was shot off a PC screen, but I think it is very educational and we do have very good CCTVs mounted at junctions, this would definitely help in accident investigations. The police in pursuit have to be commended for quick thinking, if they are stupid they would have also beat the red light and carnage would be greater...

Corgan : ... seems like the taxi shielded another motorcyclist too. or else will be an innocent killed...

Redplanet : ... Almost like the movie "Final Destination", you can't cheat death twice...

TIME and time again, his family had asked him to stop riding a motorcycle.

It was not just because Mr Ahmad Mohammad Iskandar, 23, did not have a licence.

What worried them was how he liked to speed on the roads.

His elder sister, Madam Siti Fatimah, 25, a customer service officer, said: 'We've seen him riding around here and he's not safe.

'The way he was riding, it's like he was going to die like that. We were all scared for him.'

Yesterday morning, their worst fears came true.

Mr Ahmad died on the spot after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a taxi at the junction of Sims Avenue and Sims Way at about 5am.

A witness said he saw the motorcyclist speeding along Sims Avenue when a traffic police patrol car tried to pull him over, reported Shin Min Daily News.

He fled instead, and the police officers gave chase.

When they got to a red light, the police officers stopped. But Mr Ahmad dashed ahead and into the path of an oncoming taxi.

Unable to swerve in time, the taxi which had been travelling along Sims Way towards Mountbatten Road, hit the motorcycle.

IMPACT

The impact flung Mr Ahmad and his pillion rider, Mr Ryan Ashley Pereira, 19, onto the road.

The taxi skidded another 20m and mounted a grass verge, ran into a row of tree saplings before finally stopping after crashing into the perimeter wall of a condominium.

The driver was seen sitting in his taxi, dazed, for some time until the paramedics arrived on the scene.

He then stepped shakily out of the taxi by himself.

A police spokesman said the driver, a Chinese man in his early 50s, was seriously injured but conscious.

The pillion rider had multiple arm and leg fractures.

Both were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

The spokesman said a second motorcyclist skidded while trying to avoid the collision.

The rider, a Chinese man in his late teens, was also taken to TTSH for pain in his right knee and multiple abrasions.

Police investigations are on-going.

Mr Ahmad's mother, Madam Rahmah Sawan, 45, a housewife, was shocked by news of his death at 7.30am yesterday.

She last saw him on Monday night before he went out with his friends.

She said he did not always return home so she was not alarmed when she woke up to find that he was not at home.

Madam Rahmah said her son, the fourth of seven children, has a low IQ and went to a special school.

She said: 'He is talkative and friendly with those he knows, but he is too aggressive and gets into trouble easily.

'I always worry about him.'

Madam Rahmah said Mr Ahmad was released from prison last September after serving an 18-month sentence for rioting. She said he seemed to have changed for the better and was working at a pest control company until two months ago.

Madam Siti said her brother had wanted a motorcycle licence.

'But he had no money for one, so he took the risk and rode without a licence,' she said.

CAN'T CONTROL HIM

'All of us had advised him not to ride motorcycles, but he is stubborn. He's 23 already, how to control him? We can't monitor him all the time.'

She said the family does not know where he got the motorcycle from as he does not own one.

The two men's friend, Miss Yanni Radiana, 18, a sales assistant, said Mr Pereira also did not own any vehicles.

She said Mr Ahmad was taking Mr Pereira back to the latter's Haig Road home after a karoke session at Boat Quay when the accident happened.

She said the pair had met through a motorcycle group about six months ago and had quickly become 'best friends'.

The fiancee of Mr Pereira's elder brother, who wanted to be known only as Miss Sri, 23, said of the two: 'They're very close.

'They can't stop laughing when they are together.

'I don't think Ryan knows what happened to Ahmad. Ryan has been in surgery for more than 12 hours since the accident and is having difficulty pulling through himself.'

She said Mr Pereira had been going for motorcycle-riding lessons and was planning to get his licence in August.

Mr Pereira's step-mother, MadamAnnie Khee, 50, a clinic assistant, said: 'We last saw Ryan more than a month ago as he doesn't live with us.

'My heart dropped when his friends called me at about 1pm to tell me about the accident.'

She said that apart from fractures on his arms and legs, he also had a fractured spine and internal injuries.

His father, Mr Derek Pereira, 50, a civil servant, said: 'Usually it's the pillion rider who goes first before the rider in a motorcycle accident.

'Maybe this is a warning from above for Ryan, a wake-up call. Hopefully, he'll turn out okay after the surgery.' -TNP

The One Where Rachel Takes A Shot To The Guts

Chick Flick Licked. The power of false advertising. It had Jennifer Aniston in it for crying out loud! How was I to know?

The Story:

Clive Owen from The Children of Men doesn’t shag Rachel from Friends, gets blackmailed. Kills Xzibit from Pimp My Ride and Vincent Cassel. David Morrissey who played Gordon Brown in the Deal and was also in Basic Instinct 2 dies. A mercedes gets trashed and 100000 dollars gets lost and gained and lost again. The end.

The Good:

Jennifer Aniston takes one in the guts. This is a justifiable homicide on the grounds of bad acting and being the character in this film played by a cast member from Friends.

Lots of blood. A surprising amount of one-on-one violence.

The bit where the viewer says out loud “That’s Xzibit from MTV’s Pimp My Ride!”

The Bad:

This Movie follows the A-Z Movie-making rule of duff thrillers that says the quickest route including twists and turns is in a straight who-can-say-the-next-line-first line from improbable brief encounter to final destination denouement.

The Verdict:

This involves Pig math. Lose 2 for Friends link. Add 5 for bloody violence beyond the call of duty. Lose 1 again for tricking me, I was expecting an alcohol-fuelled romp of a chick-flick. Lose another one for the no-show shag. Clive Owen from Sin City add 5. I watched this movie, always worth a Pig.

12 Pigs. All scores subject to change.
