[caption id="attachment_10" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="volando"][/caption]

Finnair -one of the world's oldest airlines established in 1923- has turned 85 years old this year and is showing the airline world how such a birthday should be celebrated in true style.

[caption id="attachment_877" align="aligncenter" width="476" caption="Retro and Current Logos of Finnair"][/caption]

1. Retro Flights in Retro Livery Airplane

First of all painting one of the fleet (an Airbus A319) in the original livery from 85 years ago and naming it "Silver Bird" for years to come:

[caption id="attachment_880" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Finnair Airbus A319 in Retro Livery (c by Teemu Heikkonen on airliners.net)"][/caption]

Finnair is flying the "Silver Bird" from its home Helsinki-Vantaa airport to a number of locations all around Europe, but some of those flights between July 30 and December 31, 2008 are classified as Retro flights, with the crew wearing retro dresses as well. (if interested, read our earlier post about sexy stewardess uniforms.)

2. Retro Marketing on a Dedicated Retro Website

Setting up a special dedicated retro website for a month that looks like it was made out of paper and pack it with video commercials from earlier days (which still advertise the current brand...). Add the list of the above mentioned retro flights to it, (the list may change due to operational reasons of course) together with classic Retro style Destination Guides to the planned destinations: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, London, Manchaster, Milan, Oulu, Paris, Rome, Stockholm.

[caption id="attachment_882" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Retro Style Finnair 85th Anniversary Website"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_883" align="aligncenter" width="438" caption="Link to Finnair Retro Commercials"][/caption]

Turning the main Finnair cover website to a Retro looking page with a single banner to the Retro site and a search module - to still allow people to get on with their business and make a booking.

[caption id="attachment_878" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Main cover page of Finnair in Retro Style"][/caption]

3. Celebrate the 10 year Alliance Membership with Further Special Livery Airplanes

And finally follow LAN Airlines and be the first European oneworld member to feature a special oneworld livery on the latest Airbus A340 addition to the longhaul fleet as well as on a shorthaul Airbus A319 - to celebrate the 10 year membership in oneworld.

[caption id="attachment_885" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Finnair special anniversary oneworld livery Airbus A340 (c by oneworld)"][/caption]

Very well done Finnair, this marketing campaign should be copied by others!! Besides the website and the retro commercial videos, having three special livery aircraft at the same time will have all plane-spotters around the world looking out for anniversary Finnair airplanes!

Seutula airport - today known as Helsinki-Vantaa - was built for the 1952 olympics. The runways of the older Helsinki-Malmi would have required considerable investment in order to be able to handle newer airplanes.

Back in 1952 jet planes were still rare but the Duke of Edinburgh impressed people by leaving the city using a de Havilland Comet I.

Today the airport is growing fast as it has a favorable location between major Asian destinations and continental Europe. There is no need to "fly to the wrong direction" if you have a connecting flight at Helsinki-Vantaa. Finnair has been adding new Asian routes very frequently. This summer South-Korean capital Seoul became the latest destination. I've always wanted to travel to South Korea's Pusan (also written as Busan) as in Finnish it means Pusa's. I.e. my city.

Both Helsinki-Vantaa airport and Finnair used to be extremely efficient. I have several times just walked from my plane through passport control, luggage carousel and customs to a taxi without any waiting. The increase in traffic and demands for lower costs have had its toll but both are still much better than most of the airports and airlines that I have used.

Im back. This was my first flight by FinnAir. I liked their service, and the flight to Helsinki was on schedule and smooth. Good it wasn’t from terminal 5, or I wud still be in London and bags in Milan. The baggage allowance was 30 Kgs each. At £329 return fare, this seemed like a pretty good deal. Frankly, I don’t mind being cooped up in Battery-Chicken class (it’s nothing compared to Sardines-in- tin-can of a Central Railway local in peak hour) unless there’s someone sitting in front row who doesn’t agree with Kyoto agreement on emissions ! Oops, then there’s nowhere to run.

Their food was …… ummmmm let me think…. the service was good ! I prefer not to eat too much during a journey. Having said that, this was the first time I tasted Medu-Wada, Upma and Idli Sambar as breakfast menu in a continental flight and it was good.

Our seats were right beside the wing. With a 2 hour 30 min flight to Helsinki, I tried to break boredom by turning to my 7 year old: “Look, there’s bright sunshine outside, I need to stretch my legs and go for a quick walk on the wing, be right back in a minute”! She looked out “Actually Dad, why don’t you go for a swim? There’s plenty of water down there!” I guess, one cant pull a fast one on kids these days.

We met an interesting family at Helsinki transit lounge, Indians from Surinam now settled in Rotterdam, Holland. I couldn’t speak Dutch and they couldn’t speak English but we got on in Hindi and now we plan to link up in London or Rotterdam after they are back. They were on a 3 week Indian tour of North and Southern India

Have never been to Finland before and this is the closest I have been to North Pole. As we queued up to board the 8pm connecting flight from Helsinki to Mumbai, 8pm in Helsinkin in July looked like 3pm on a hot summer day in London. Would I fly Finn Air again? Im not sure I want to visit North Pole again ! But I will never forget the spectacular views of the tall, impassable Hindukush mountains for hundreds of miles in North Afghanistan as we flew over it and the teeming life around Volgograd near Moscow.

My co-passenger from Helsinki was a young Indian lady based in Paris and hailing from Madagascar. She couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak French but again, we got on with some broken Gujarati from me and some broken English from her.

In Mumbai, the first week, I was expecting lots of rain and water everywhere, but there was none of that. I was told it’s been dry for weeks. The nights were mostly cool, but I could never sleep without a fan. And these nights brought on a sleep depriving menace for an already jet-lagged traveller - Mosquitoes !

Im not sure how they got on to the 5th floor Penthouse of my friend where I stayed. Perhaps they used the lift? Those menacing Mosquitoes were a distinct terror of the night. Their approaching drone warned you of an impending peril. Much like German V2 bombers in WW2 archives we saw. They would do a sortie in pitch darkness... "woiiiiiiinnnggg" they would fly past and you knew they were doing an aerial dance of reconnaissance before turning around to strike on a nice fleshy patch. Up went the blanket to cover the legs but that didnt help. They had already found their target.

Did they bite? Ouch !!!! You could tell from their nasty bite, they were extreme-right- wing fundamentalists !! That Tortoise repellent wafting away in one corner was just like its name, slow and ineffective against these pesky little, terrorist Mossies of the night. As ineffective as preaching Secularism to the Taliban or "Ahimsa" to Al Qaida !! Seriously, I think they should make it more potent and rebrand it ….Tiger Mosquito repellant ! Or Crocodile... .. perhaps !

One of them was resting with his bloated 'excess baggage', unable to gain lift any higher than the nearest Arm-chair. SWOT came down Hindustan Times that consigned him to history. A bright, red blood-stained smear (my blood by the way ! ) marked his previous existence.

The roadside delicacies are a real treat, but have you seen the flies? Just when you tuck into your favorite delicacy, they want to befriend you ! "Hey-I-wanna- be-your-friend" ! Turning around, waving them off wont dissuade them. Resolute and determined to be even more friendly, they are back … "You-dont-wanna- be-mah-friend? " No, they wont leave you alone !

Have been eating a lot these days. Ive put on so much weight, no matter where I go, my tummy arrives before I do !! The food had its impact on me. But Im better now, Quinol is good and it is available off the counter !

I like the Indian generosity and hospitality though sometimes it can be a trifle stifling. If you need to have only 5 chapatis then, by the time you are served with 3, you need to start applying the brakes "Nako, Nako, baas, puray," that's when you get to 5 !

It reminded me of the good ol’ train commute from VT station during peak hour rush. Always packed, if you need to get off at Dadar, then, by the time you get to Byculla you need to start with "bhaisaab, muzhey utarna hai, utarna hai", and get ready to get off. Then they nudge, push, squirm, shove and edge you closer to the door….. come Dadar and you get thrown off like a sack of potatoes ! ! And if you look back at the packed "sardines-in- a-tin-can" compartment, you wonder how you got in. Thats how I wonder...how did I manage to get 6 chapatis in !

Need to board a train during peak hour? No probs, figure out where the compartment door will arrive from a previous train and position yourself there. Come next train and you get pushed in !

So when you are at receiving end of hospitality, saying "That's enough, thanks" aint enough. The timing's got to be right, or, instead of ‘Dadar’ you end up at ‘Kalyan’ ! That’s when Quinol or Isabgol comes in handy, depends which way you are going.

That reminds me, when I used to commute during College days, I don’t remember seeing anyone using kerchief to wipe sweat off their face in a train. They don’t ! In the packed compartmnent, they turn their face to the right, then left, now the guy in front has a shirt that's only a little more damp ! I hear some take 2 shirts to work, the other for travel.

Traffic – there are plenty of flyovers now, and there is still traffic, atleast there is no gridlock like it used to be, but pedestrians like me still have to play Russian roulette just to cross the road. Outsiders might think it is dicing with death, but locals are adept at it. Nowadays there are count down timers at traffic lights. Gives you perfect estimate when lights turn green. No need to dart across like a rat!

I noticed there was a distinct decline in number of beggars at traffic lights, now there are small time vendors pushing cheap items through taxi windows and always willing to haggle, the more disinterested you are. Or if the lights turn green. Never mind cheap quality, be they toys, pens, pack of tissues, candles, or other play things for children, atleast they are not begging. This is entrepreneurship at lowest level and encourages young children the value of hard work. I suspect they are part of a larger cartel. Im sure these items peddled are tax free, so the govt prob wont encourage, but atleast it has reduced the beggars’ nuisance.

I like the informality of customer service, always seems like a breath of fresh air that contrasts with the backdrop of cut-throat, cold, business like competition, in the west.
Need a copy? No probs they’ll send a staff to do it for no extra, and even offer you a cuppa! Where, oh where would you find this in the west. Indians will happily bend over backwards to deliver stuff right upto your flat no matter what floor. There’s no shirking away on pretext of “Health and Safety”, “Insurance liability” or some other politically correct mumbo jumbo that is only a mask for lethargy.

I also love the innately helpful attitude of people, from complete strangers. Struggling to do a 3 point turn in busy traffic, passersby will stop to help. “Aaney do, aaney do, thoda right maaro, abhi left maro”

Customer service is much better than what used to be and you don’t get to see the now defunct “goods once sold will not be taken back” signs. Compensation or an alternate choice is the norm.

The booming retail industry has raised some strange sights. You’ve heard of the hugely rising middle class and the increased affordability of goods and services. Practically every vendor you see has a mobile. I visited my native place after several years. Not only are there a growing number of mobile phone users in villages, but I was amused when a “Katkari” called my cousin from a mobile. A Katkari is an indigenous tribal local to Raigad dist, whose existence until now was pretty basic. Once upon a time they were hunter gatherers but these days they also help plough the farm during rainy season. Until now the only garment they wore was a loin cloth to cover their modesty, a sickle around the waist - a useful tool. Prob, this katkari was by now into jeans and trainers if not a Justin Timberlake cap or Salman-Khan studs !!

And all of last week, it didn’t rain, just poured and poured and poured ! As I looked down from the 5th floor apartment, roads turned into rivers, cars broken down in the middle of the road and tail backs building up. Old taxis broken down in flooded roads, strangers giving a helping hand to push it out of the way. Who needs AA?

The fabric of human society that bonds us to each other seems to survive tough times in adversity particularly in developing countries more so than in West. It survives against all odds and is touching to see. People dont walk on by when you are in trouble. Perhaps they realise the state machinery is too slow to respond unlike in West where perhaps there is too much complacency or lethargy and people rely on the system to sort out other’s problems. Perhaps Im wrong, I don’t know. But this pattern seems to exist in other developing countries too, where people are not reluctant to help each other.

Its great to see a perceptible shift in the sharing of global wealth as it now moves eastwards or rather from the developed to the developing countries. And it is even more appropriate that fast growing economies like India and China make Capitalist economies understand, that they cannot push and shove their economic policies on the less rich. Creating protectionist economic trade blocs will only be counterproductive to western interests. I note the WTO talks have collapsed due to India and China taking a robust stand and not bowing down to Yanks or Brits, and why should we? It’s their loss. They can try and close their markets but how long can they survive on their high cost of living and sustain this?

Im not sure of details, perhaps India should have used its clout of high economic growth rate to link discussions of WTO with oil subsidies from OPEC (perhaps by using Western leverage to slowly arm twist OPEC nations into a deal favourable to all) or maybe use western Auto industry to negotiate for greater tie-ups with India thus linking it to Oil. I believe, in less than 5 years, G8 and other industrial nations might have to have an extraordinary session of the WTO to discuss this stalemate on terms favourable to all, but particularly to growing economies like India and China. What else can stem the saturation of Capitalist economies? Capitalism and global wealth cannot sustain itself and the high cost of goods and services it demands in the west. Forces of economics dictate that it needs to flow to a larger market and the only direction is Eastwards.

I dream of the day when westerners flock to India not for tourism or business opportunities, but education and career opportunities as well and earn a living. Maybe not in our lifetime, but sooner than one expects. Brain drain reversed.

Time will tell but my stakes are on India

Due to the failure to reach a new agreement on a new collective pay and conditions deal, Finnair pilots have started an overtime ban. Finnair is Finland's largest airline and flag carrier headquartered in Vantaa, Finland. Its main hub is at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. (From more on the airline read here)

From Helsingin Sanomat -

"In the multiphase negotiations it was finally pondered on which terms the present contract could be continued. Peter Forsström,
managing director of the Association of Support Service Industries,
reported that the employer's side had offered a 3.7% salary increase in
exchange for six months of extra time, but the pilots had insisted on
an 11-month continuation to their labour agreement with a 7.5% pay rise
and a 7.5% one-off payment on top of that.

According to Forsström, the demand is unreasonable and untenable,
considering the airline industry’s present economic plight. “In the
last two three weeks the situation has taken a very distinct turn for
the worse.” "

I’m not sure whether to take my close calls with lightning as that I am living right or that G

I'm not sure whether to take my close calls with lightning as that I am living right or that God's aim is just a little off when he decides it's time to teach me a lesson!

I'll never forget flying at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, returning to the United States from Finland, when suddenly there was a VERY loud boom, and a ball of fire rolled down the aisle in our MD-11 aircraft.

Mind you, I was sitting near one of my dear friends who is blind. She asked, "What was that?!?" Folks, she SAW the light of the fireball it was so bright.

Me and the guy next to me held hands and prayed like we'd never prayed before. I think my prayer was more a chant of "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus..."

The flight attendants immediately went into crisis mode. This was Finnair, and an odd thing about their attire was that they all wore black leather gloves. Also, Finnish is not the prettiest language on our fair planet, and so everything they said sounded like they were barking orders, even if they were asking if you'd like a cup of tea.

Anyway, they were quickly walking up and down the aisles, I suppose they were looking for any possible damage and getting ready for what ever emergency procedures the passengers might need to prepare for.

It took about 5 minutes -- five of the longest minutes of my life -- for the pilot to come onto the loudspeaker, and in his broken English said, "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, we had a weather occurrence take place, and are in the process of testing all equipment. It does not appear to have damaged the aircraft. Please stand by for further information."

Well, that was certainly comforting.

Another 10 minutes later, the pilot came back on and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, our landing will be delayed approximately 60 minutes so that we may continue to test the equipment as we begin our decent in to New York. Thank you for your patience. Please remain in your seats."

So we waited, and waited, and waited as we circled off the coast of New York. Finally, we descended and made a safe landing at JFK. What we all noticed as we landed were the emergency vehicles and foam on the tarmac, but by the time we landed, we were so exhausted and mostly had calmed down since we hadn't disintegrated in mid-air, that it didn't dawn on many of us that all of that emergency equipment might be for us.

Come to find out...it was for us! The reason we were circling over the ocean so long was because we were dumping our fuel for landing! We also made CNN that day, they showed us landing live on the air -- I suppose just in case we crashed, they'd have the exclusive coverage!

So that brings me to last night. I wasn't really sleeping well anyway, because Amanda has one heck of a cough right now, and since she was born, I still wake up when I hear her down the hallway. It was about 3:30am, and I had dozed off when I heard her crying from a loud boomer that scared her awake, and so I brought her in to sleep the rest of the night with me.

I turned on the TV to see if there were any tornadoes in the area, and there was the hottie weatherman letting us all know that thankfully it was all just a bunch of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with hail, but at least no tornadoes.

Suddenly, there was that all too familiar loud boom and bright light (just like on the airplane). I grabbed Amanda and we both froze for a few seconds. Amazingly, the electricity did not go off. I got up and walked around the house to see if anything was damaged. I briefly went outside to make sure the house or any trees weren't on fire and ran back in (I wasn't going to push my luck!).

When I came back in, I immediately realized what part of the loud crash had been...

I have one of those wooden perpetual calendars that has little wooden blocks you change with each month.

It was now laying on my deep freezer.

The lightning knocked my calendar off the wall! That was the only thing that was out of place.

Unbelievable. I am always amazed at the power of Mother Nature. I respect her and am really thankful that so far, all of my close calls have been met with mercy.

in Sud Corea.

Tapahtuma tosin laajeni kattamaan koko maata. No jokatapauksessa tuona aamuna toimitettiin Jyväskylän lentoasemalle laatikko lennätettäväksi Helsinkiin kello 11.20, mutta turvatarkastuksessa laatikkoa alettiin epäilemään pommiksi. Saman päivän iltana kello 20.05 Finnairin lentorahtiliikenne pysäytettiin koko Suomessa. En ala selittämään koko tarinaa, sillä sen voitte lukea Finlex:n Oikeuskanserlinviraston tietokannasta: 02.01.1990 44/69/89 Syyteharkinta epäiltyä ilmaliikenteen häiritsemistä koskevassa asiassa.

Mainostelevisio Oy:n Sunnuntairaportti-ohjelman toimitus siis aiheutti kahden päivän lentorahtisuman.
