Its only the start of day Wednesday here and its already been a very productive week. I've been meeting with my Marketing team colleagues, plus the Addons team, Window Snyder, and by the end of the week I'll have met with most of the folks who we work closely with from our US based team. We've been talking a bunch of things and working through ideas for the rest of the year. Its been great to catch up with people I work with every day and meet some of the new folks who have recently joined. More on this next week.

3. Fast Dial - Another awesome and very useful add-on. I barely use my bookmarks anymore: Fast Dial replaces the 'about:blank' page whenever you open a new tab with a panel of thumbnails of your favorite sites. A real time-saver inspired by Opera's Speed Dial. Again: Highly Recommended.
4. TwitterFox - For all the Twitters out there, stop downloading Twitterific or whatever it's called for PCs. Get TwitterFox. You can follow your friends or write down a Twitt directly from Firefox. It's just extremely convenient, and you don't even have to launch another application.
5. ScribeFire - This is mainly for the bloggers. I'm actually typing this blog through ScribeFire; it's a full-featured blog editor that integrates with Firefox and lets you easily post your blog. I can browse the web while I'm doing blogging to make sure all my web references and links are correct. Sweet add-on.
6. Previews - The makers of PicLens did it again. "Best extension ever? Quite possibly." - LifeHacker. "Cooliris makes you a more efficient web surfer." - CNet. I somewhat agree: it is very useful when you're on Craigslist, MySpace or Facebook when you want to see a listing but don't want to go from one page back to the index page and onto the next page and so on... it pops a new window within your already-opened tab so you can see different pages within one. I had to set it up to my convenience, but it's definitely worth it if you don't want to waste your time going back and forth one page.
7. Google Notebook - The page you're on is somewhat interesting but not enough to read it right now, and definitely not interesting to bookmark? Put it in your notebook. Useful little add-on.And now for the web developers; I use those practically everyday at work:
8. FireFTP - Just as useful as it before, you don't need another application for a cross-platform FTP, it works better then before (looks like they did some tweaking) and it provides easy and intuituve access to different FTP servers.
9. FireBug - This little add-on allows you to edit, debug and monitor CSS, HTML and JavaScript live in any web page. Very helpful and useful when you need to tweak your CSS.
10. Web Developer - This add-on and FireBug make a great team. Web Developer adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.

I haven't used all the add-ons that I used to have, for I've noticed that the more add-ons you use, the more memory they use, and they drastically slow down firefox and sometimes make it crash (ok, I had a PC, but that's another story). So now I'm only using the ones that are necessary, useful, will make me save time and really improve my browsing experience.

Previously I was using Firefox 2 and was happy with its performance. Then I downloaded the latest version Firefox 3.0 on world download day. More than 22 million downloads are done till now. Earlier I used to tweak my browser to optimize it for the best performance. Now I am experimenting with the optimization tricks on the latest version. I am sharing them with you here. However I am a little disappointed with the extension compatibilities of the latest version. I guess I will need to re-install most of the extensions I was using with the earlier version. Its a pain considering the fact that most of those extensions do not have an updated versions for Firefox 3. I also found out what more I can do with the latest version, and then the Firefox 3 easter eggs too! I hope these Firefox 3 hacks and tweaks will help you in optimizing the browser to suit your needs....MORE

Para usar o Gmail como cliente de email padrão do Firefox 3 (o detentor do recorde) basta seguir esses 3 passos indolores:

1. Logue (né Roque?) no Gmail (mais indolor que isso hein ?)
2. Uma vez dentro do Gmail, copie o javascript abaixo e, sem medo, cole-o na barra de endereços (aquela lá em cima que você digitas os "www´s da vida") e aperte enter.
3. Clique em Adicionar Programa, na barra que aparecerá abaixo da barra de abas

Σχεδόν τρεις μήνες από την εγκατάσταση του Ubuntu Hardy Heron στο laptop μου και τα πρώτα προβληματάκια εμφανίστηκαν. Οι εφαρμογές που μου κάνουν τις δύσκολες είναι οι εξής:

• Mozilla Firefox 2
• Mozilla Firefox 3
• Amarok
• Skype
• Pidgin
• Wine

Με την πρώτη ματιά στη λίστα θα πείτε "Τι μας λέει τώρα ο τύπος;". Και θα έχετε
εν μέρει δίκιο. Τα περισσότερα από αυτά τα προγράμματα είναι γνωστά... κέρατα στο Linux εκ φύσεως. Όπως για παράδειγμα το Amarok, που τρώει ώρες ώρες κάτι φρίκες και ξεραίνεται. Τα προβλήματα είναι όμως λίγο πιο συγκεκριμένα και έχουν και κάποιες αστείες ιδιομορφίες.

Ας αρχίσω με το Amarok που ανέφερα πρώτο. Η συγκεκριμένη εφαρμογή χρησιμοποιεί τη μηχανή ήχου του Xine, και εαν έχω ανοίξει πριν την καλέσω κάποιο παράθυρο Firefox με flash video και ήχο, τότε το άψογο κατά τα άλλα Amarok, τα φτύνει και κολλάει. Εάν όμως καλέσω πρώτα το Amarok και μετά το Firefox, θα ακουστούν και τα δύο κανονικά. Συνεπώς καταλήγω στο οτι αυτό είναι ίσως κάποιο τσαλίμι του Firefox που αν κληθεί πρώτο δεν αφήνει κάποιους πόρους της μηχανής ήχου για άλλα προγράμματα. Επίσης εάν προσπαθήσω να αλλάξω την επιλογή για τη μηχανή ήχου σε Alsa ή κάτι άλλο, το Amarok τα φτύνει και πάλι, ενώ για να ξανατρέξει πρέπει να το απεγκαταστήσω και να το ξαναεγκαταστήσω.

Η νέα και πολλά υποσχόμενη έκδοση του Firefox, ο Firefox 3 (που είναι και default browser του Hardy Heron), κάνει προς το παρόν τα δικά του, κι ας βγήκε απο beta πρόσφατα. Απλά δεν ενεργοποιεί το back button και ορισμένες φορές δε γουστάρει καν να ανοίξει τη σελίδα που ζήτησα (ειδικά εάν είναι link από άλλο πρόγραμμα, όπως π.χ. το Pidgin). Ο Firefox 2 πάλι έχει τα κλασσικά του κολλήματα όπως υπερβολική κατανάλωση πόρων και αργό loading. Ένα όμως που δεν είχε παλιότερα είναι το ότι δεν μπορω να εγκαταστήσω add-ons λόγω κάποιου θέματος με τα file permissions υποθέτω. Μερικοί δε θα μάθουν ποτέ. :P

Το Pidgin, για κάποιο περίεργο λόγο δεν ανοίγει καν ορισμένες σπάνιες φορές, ενώ άλλες κρεμάει και κολλάει αμέσως μετά το άνοιγμα. Παρόμοιο πρόβλημα είχα πριν από ένα μήνα περίπου, όταν παρατήρησα οτι κόλλαγε πάλι με το που άνοιγε το msn account μου, ενώ με τα άλλα (Yahoo!, Google και ICQ) δεν υπήρχε πρόβλημα.

Το Skype τρώει φρίκη όταν προσπαθώ του κάκου να το τρέξω παράλληλα με το Amarok, με το Firefox ή κάτι άλλο που κάνει ήχους :P. Προφανώς υπάρχει κάποιο ζήτημα με τη μηχανή ήχου που στοιχειώνει το Ubuntu ακόμα.

Εν τέλει, το Wine, το οποίο αν και λειτουργεί όταν τρέχω το pre-installed Notepad της Microsoft, όταν ζητάω να μου ανοίξει κάποιο μεγαλούτσικο .exe αρχείο, με αφήνει να περιμένω. Ούτε φωνή ούτε ακρόαση. Για αυτό βέβαια ίσως να ευθύνεται και ο αδύναμος σχετικά επεξεργαστής μου στα 1.4 MHz αλλά έλεος ρε παιδιά, Worms Armageddon πήγα να τρέξω, όχι Fear! :(

Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να πω πως τελικά ίσως ο ενθουσιασμός μου με τα drivers που λειτουργούσαν άψογα απο την εγκατάσταση χωρίς να κάνω τίποτα, ήταν λίγο υπερβολικός. Πιθανόν να υπάρχει κάποιο ζήτημα με τις διάφορες εκδόσεις του software που αναβαθμίζεται συνέχεια (είναι απίστευτο το πόσο συχνά με ενημερώνει για updates το pc). Γι αυτό και σε μερικά updates συναντάω πρόβλημα το οποίο λύνεται στην επόμενη έκδοση του προγράμματος που βγαίνει μετά από δυο μέρες (κάτι βρωμάει δηλαδή). Συνεχίζω να το δοκιμάζω σε pc φίλων όμως για να αποκτήσω μια πιο σφαιρική άποψη όσον αφορά την ανταπόκρισή του σε διαφορετικό hardware από το δικό μου. Μην ανησυχείτε όμως, θα ενημερώνεστε και εσείς κάθε φορά που μαζεύονται θεματάκια συζήτησης. :)

• Primero vamos a abrir la configuración de Firefox tecleando about:config en la barra de dirección.

On doit ce nouveau Portable Firefox 3 gratuit à Framakey qui avait déjà pris en main les précédentes versions du "panda roux" (depuis la 1.5.0.5) et qui réalise d'autres déclinaisons portables de célèbres logiciels libres (Thunderbird, Sunbird, OpenOffice, VLC, The Gimp, Filezilla...).

L'avantage, rappelons-le, est de disposer de Firefox 3 où que vous alliez sans avoir à l'installer sur la machine qui vous accueille puisqu'il s'exécute directement depuis la clé USB où il se trouve.

Si le lancement n'est pas aussi prompt que depuis un disque dur, c'est là le seul petit bémol. Car par ailleurs, vous disposez de l'ensemble des fonctionnalités habituelles du navigateur : paramètres personnels, marques-pages (= aux "favoris" d'I.E rappelons-le), marques-pages dynamiques (méthode de suivi des flux RSS) etc... Sans compter que cette version reprend bien sûr l'ensemble des nouveautés de FF3 dont ses améliorations de sécurité (parmi lesquelles l'anti-phising, et l'anti-sites malveillants).

I've gotten a lot of e-mails regarding the new version of Mozilla FireFox 3....

The issues for quick reference are:

1. FireFox 3 crashes when I go to IGN.com...or uTube....

2. FireFox 3..is stuck in a refresh loop..

3. I can't find my passwords...they do not fill in automatically anymore....

4. "All my cookies are gone?" "where did all my cookies go ?"

So here are some issues and some fixes....again...these fixes..have worked for me on many occasions but may not work with all computers or situations..ENJOY...

ISSUES #1: FireFox 3 crashes when I go to IGN.com...or uTube....

FIX: Make sure all your graphic plug-ins are up to date...

To check what version you have follow these instructions....

1. click on TOOLS on the FireFox header

2. When the menu drops down select ADD-ONS

3. When a new window opens....choose..the option that looks like a Lego block...

4. Scan threw the plug-in...at the same time go to the plug-ins respective website..and verifies you have the latest version of the plug-in

5. If you don't...install...then restart FireFox 3

ISSUE #2: FireFox 3..is stuck in a refresh loop.. ( the following are 3 ways I found helped in most cases)

Fix 1: cancel.....the current task..via the large X icon..then refresh

Fix 2:- open the windows task bar and end task...then restart FireFox 3..but choose to open new window

Fix 3:- ( I know this sounds Crazy but it works ) dis-connect the internet.....and count to 30....and re-attach the..internet cable...or modem...and wait 5 sec..and start-up FireFox 3 again...this also works on Network and servers...

ISSUE #3: I can't find my passwords...they do not fill in automatically anymore....

Fix: in most cases they are still there...but for what ever reason...they don't fill in to the user name and password field, you have to re-activate them..by putting them in again..and then FireFox 3 will now remember them.... (It is a real shame...I just hope you remember them)

ISSUE #4: "All my cookies are gone?" "where did all my cookies go ?"

FIX: What is happening is that Mozilla FireFox 3 Default setting is to delete the cookies every time FireFox closes...... to stop this...

Follow these steps:

1. Open TOOLS

2. When drop down menu appears

3. Select OPTIONS...it is the last one on the drop down menu

4. When the new Window opens up select the PRIVACY TAB

5. It will take a few seconds to load.....

6. Now make sure the first option "KEEP MY HISTORY FOR AT LEAST" make sure it says 90 DAYS

6a. now go to the bottom there are 2 options...with a check box...ALWAYS CLEAR MY PRIVATE DATA WHEN I CLOSE FIREFOX....make SURE that option is UN-CHECKED...then there is an option that says ASK ME BEFORE CLEARING MY PRIVATE DATA...make SURE that is CHECKED

Firefox 3's share of visits then rises day by day to hit 9.3% on June 22, 2008, or almost one visit in every ten on average in Europe and a threefold rise during the week when "Download day" took place".

They go on to show the table above with EU's average market share hovering around 34% - which would be a 5% increase since the last Xiti report was published in April (http://www.xitimonitor.com/en-us/browsers-barometer/firefox-march-2008/index-1-2-3-127.html). The numbers in this table are pretty changeable, reaching 34% 2 days before the launch of Fx 3.

Xiti should be publishing their quarterly report at the end of this month - it will be interesting to see the numbers for EU over this longer period.

Full screen view is now working. Everything else seems the same as in version 9.

As in the previous version, it seems amazingly hard on the cpu. And after watching some flash movies on you tube npviewer.bin was consuming a lot of cpu time, even though all flash pages have been closed.

This seems either to be a flash or a flash - ndiswrapper issue.

Because I wanted my cpu back I killed the processes, indirectly disabling flash for the current running firefox.

Again, this seems to be a working solution, but not the best one.

Or maybe flash 64 bit is on its way. Hm, maybe next decade.

If I find out more, I will let you know.
