I have a small Sony Handycam that records to mini-DVD discs. It takes reasonably good video, and makes a nice "B" camera.

There is not, however, any good way to get the footage off of it once recorded. You can use a hardware solution like this one, or a software solution like this one, and each has its disadvantages. I finally landed on the software, and here's why:

A note for anyone who walks into Best Buy (or any retailer, for that matter) in the hopes of being able to record their old VCR tapes to DVD:

No matter what the nice salesperson tells you...

No matter how much experience s/he says s/he has working with just that piece of hardware...

No matter how good s/he says it works...

USB IS NOT A FAST ENOUGH INTERFACE FOR VIDEO CAPTURE.

With the latency introduced by trying to stream real-time video through too small a data through rate, the end product comes out looking like a Japanese cartoon.

Firewire is fast enough, and in fact I've used a firewire device to do so, but don't have one, and don't want to borrow from the only person I know who has one.

So, the solution was to use the software, DVDx, which reads the video from a DVD and converts it to AVI on your hard drive for editing. The software is ugly (the skin is a gray marble, the labels are dark gray - it's nearly impossible to read), but it does the job.

The biggest disadvantage there is that the process is slow - 30 minutes worth of video takes about 2 hours to convert. The end result, though, is very good quality, and imports into Adobe Premiere very nicely.

YES YES YEEEEEES!!!!

After much effort and building and research our kit was finally installed in our 07 Honda Civic Hybrid!!!

The taping of the event was more humorous than informative in some aspects so the editing will be done to fit what was going on. Pretty much there will be a voice over for the installation portion OR I may just do it all over again (seeing that it is in now I can take it out and go through it all again with less problems).

We are so freaking excited! The car is running smooth and we are now in the test phase. Our average mileage per gallon in the Texas heat was 27.5 We have since reset the trip and now we are looking for increases or decreases in the system. At first, the mpg readout was going nuts. It couldnt figure out what the hell was going on but to show you how awesome it was, the first reading on the readout was 78 mpg until it settled down to 32 mpg. So, as we sit here today... The kit is installed. The video will be in the works (once I can find someone with a firewire port) and we will be posting updates as well as information to the release of the install and construction guide!

Oh yeah... does anyone know how to add pics to this thing without having to use a URL?

Today marked an amazing step in the right direction!

After much pain and frustration of not having the parts (my order came in and the freaking post office didnt give me the slip to inform me of delivery), then having to move the battery to the trunk and soon install of the kit once i get the right barbed connector I got a 3/8 instead of a 1/4 inch. FREAKIN HELL!

Anyways, With all that going on We started production of the INSTALL DVD. Ok your going to have to work with me on this for now lol I have a Digital camcorder and it can connect to the computer via FireWire... I freaking laptop doesnt have a FireWire Port. UGH! See people, when you want to do something there are ways to look at your set backs. I look at this as being just one more step to make an educational funny video to help you guys get your stuff set up the right way.

Now in saying that... I would like to recognize the guys that helped tonight with the installation of the battery cable from engine to trunk. Im not to mechanically inclined to do that myself, I like to build things though.
So without further a due... A Big Appreciative THANK YOU to Cyrus and Mike. You guys honestly have made this project very smooth flowing with your knowledge of cars and the finer details. When people get to see the finished DVD they will for sure thank you guys also for your hard work. We all know cars can suck to work on (especially Hybrids). So my hats off to you gentleman. I will make sure you guys get most all the credit for this!

So, after today here is what is complete:

Battery has been moved to trunk to open engine compartment for HOD system
DVD Filming has begun
HOD Test Kit 1 is complete (wire harness and everything)
Written instruction guide is in production (pictures will be taken during installation)

There you have it... You guys check back on Sunday for more updates! I will post the finished installed product and battery movement. I know you may not care but I will post a pic of the crew to whom assisted me with the wiring and install (if they let me post it). Heres to saving gas and running more effieciently!

You know I've always looked around for little signs in everything. Mainly just to amuse myself. I can't believe in anything other than myself, but coincidences get me all excited for some reason.

Check this out:

And then check THIS out.

And in case you are unable to make sense of that, check out THIS OTHER THING.

And I'm making a quick note here to remind myself that America's insurance policy sucks. I know I'll come back and read this and go "Hahaha OH YEAH! That's what screwed you over." I'll just say my family is struggling right now and leave it at that.

I'm doomed (probably).

On a more self-expressive note, I've finalized some tattoo ideas. Although the more rebellious thing to do these days is probably to NOT get a tattoo. I'm not out to be a rebel though. Like my sternum and bellybutton, these (or at least the one) will simply be a mark from a time in my life that I shouldn't let myself forget about. When the time is right...

That is the result of some photoshopping done to the following picture, which I took with my cell phone.

An etching of a butterfly on a pair of butterfly knives at my kung fu school. Appropriate, no? I only want half, tattooed on my hand, near the thumb area(-ish) so that if someone was so compelled to hold my hand and they also had a butterfly, it would make a whole butterfly. Not that I'm going to make anyone do that, or that I even WANT anyone to do that, it's just the principle of the thing.

-One-winged butterflies are a broadsword technique, and butterfly palm is a segment of the Ten Tiger Dimension/Conquering the Tiger (gun ji fuk fu kuen) kung fu form.
-Kung fu lifestyle aside, I just felt like I can empathize with the butterfly. It can undergo all the change it wants, but it's still just an ephemeral insect.
-The butterfly effect. Something so small causing something much bigger to happen. I've always been secretly preoccupied with wanting doing something on a large scale that will do something good for everyone. It would remind me to start small and to not stress the hell out.
-In japanese literature, the butterfly has represented the souls of two lovers that could not be together in life. Or the chaos that can occur when two things that are part of a whole are separated.
-Symmetry has always been a thing with me, like a compulsion. Only having half of a butterfly can help me remember that I've come a long way with overcoming my mental quirks.
-Mom told me a fable a long time ago of a little girl who wanted to see a butterfly so bad that she cut open a chrysalis, deforming the butterfly. This isn't me comparing myself to deformed butterfly, it's me remembering not to rush change because it should happen naturally, or it will happen for the wrong reason.

Other than the butterfly, I think having a firewire port symbol next to where my firewire port would be is kind of a hilariously awesome idea. I'm a mac user so it all works out.

...cue drum roll and cymbal crash?

There will be two new updates to the technology; one, S1600 will reach theoretical speeds of 1.6 Gb/s and the other, S3200 with a theoretical speed of 3.2Gb/s. The best part is that these will be backwards compatible with both the FW800 and FW400 standards. These should be hitting the market within the next couple months.

IEEE 1394, better known under the brand names of Firewire and i.Link, will get a speed bump before the end of the year: The IEEE has approved the new IEEE 1394-2008 specification that provides support for a bandwidth of up to 3.2 Gb/s.

Firewire has come a long way. From the initial development by Apple in the late 1980s, to the technology’s completion in 1995 and surge in popularity in the early 2000s, the technology has become a serial bus interface common in Sony and Apple computers as well as a range of consumer electronics devices such as video cameras.

Most IEEE 1394 devices are still running on the S400 (400 Mb/s) specification despite the fact that S800 (800 Mb/s) was introduced with the IEEE 1394b spec in 2003. The problem with this spec was a different connector than the design that was used for S400. However, bilingual cables that are compatible with S400 and S800 ports are available.

Ueber Firewire erhaelt die Festplatte keinen korrekten Wake Up Befehl vom Mac Betriebssystem.
[...]
Western Digital Support" (Zitat Ende)

FireWire is one of the fastest peripheral standards ever developed, which makes it great for use with multimedia peripherals such as digital video cameras and other high speed devices like the latest hard disk drives and printers. This new technology enables isochronous service while providing the bandwidth needed for audio, imaging, video, and other streaming data. FireWire promises to revolutionize the transport of digital data for computers and for professional and consumer electronics products. By providing an inexpensive, high speed method of interconnecting digital devices.

This paper focuses on the theory and thought behind FireWire as well as technical information, raising issues that need to be addressed.

Przesyłanie danych między jednym a drugim urządzeniem często powoduje wiele problemów. Złącza USB i FireWire wymagają podpięcia kabli, podczas gdy praca w plenerze pozbawia takiej możliwości, i dopuszcza jedynie zastosowanie fal radiowych, systemu Bluetooth lub podczerwieni.

Found two 256 MB RAM sticks on eBay for less than $20 (with shipping), and couldn't pass up on the deal to boost the PowerMac G4's RAM from 320 MB to...well, strangely, only 704 MB...

But before we get to the goofy math, let's explore how we got this far.

The G4 makes it so super easy to install RAM it's not even funny. Here we see the two empty RAM slots. There are tabs on each side of where the RAM sticks go. You simple pull them open, and when the RAM stick slides in the tabs close automatically. It's an elegant system.

Here the two RAM sticks are installed. One is a Samsung model, and the other is some Korean RAM manufacturer that I wasn't able to identify. But they're both 256 MB, which should add up to 512 MB added to the 320 MB already installed in the G4. System Profiler gave some clues:

See if you agree: 64 MB + 128 MB + 256 MB + 256 MB = 704 MB. That's what the "About This Mac" screen told me. So where did the G4 get the 320 MB it gave me before I installed the extra RAM? Where is this mysterious, missing 128 MB?

I'm not complaining, but it would've been nice to have that RAM number be 800+ MB instead of 704. Whatever. The G4 now zips along a little easier now. A processor upgrade would dramatically improve things, I think, and a graphics card upgrade wouldn't hurt, either. Next on the agenda, however, is a USB 2.0 PCI card. I'm looking at one that also includes a gigabit Ethernet port and a few extra Firewire 400 ports. The USB part is crucial, because everything from backups to plugging in my iPod relies on the faster USB connection.

A fun project, all in all, and plenty more to come. Now if only I could find that extra 128 MB of RAM....

[Read part one of the PowerMac G4 project.]

Are you looking for a tiny portable hard drive for doing Time Machine backups on the road? I do a lot of traveling with my MacBook Air and don't often get a chance to back it up to the 1 TB monster at home. Although there are several other diminutive hard drives on the market, when I saw the My Passport Studio line of portable drives announced today by Western Digital, I ordered one. After all, the case matches my AirBook!

Available in 160 ($129.99), 250 ($189.99), and 320 GB ($219.99) flavors, My Passport Studio drives are about 3.2" x 5.0" x .71" (81mm x 127 mm x 18 mm) in size and weigh a featherweight 6.4 ounces (.18 kg). The drives are bus powered -- USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 -- so there's no need to tote a power brick when you're traveling. They're formatted as HFS+ Journaled, requiring Mac OS X 10.4.11+ or 10.5.2+.

The drives are available from Western Digital, and through a variety of online and brick-and-mortar stores. The 250 and 320 GB drives are showing back-order status.
