BIG TRUCK

BIG TRUCK are a young West London-based rock band. They have been established for just over a year now, having played almost 50 shows in and around the London area. In this time BIG TRUCK have not only recorded their debut album ‘One Long Saturday Night’ but also played a sold-out show at Camden’s Purple Turtle to celebrate its first press. Since then BIG TRUCK have been well received on many independant radio stations in the UK including Total Rock, Inferno and Brit FM to name a few. This was followed by a recent brief tour of Canada and airplay on UPV Radio 102.5 FM in Spain, proving that BIG TRUCK have both UK and international appeal.

BIG TRUCK are a four-piece line up with soaring guitars, driving bass, solid drums and choruses that have you singing along before you even know the words. They hail their influences from a variety of contemporary and classic bands - Foo Fighters, The Who, Muse and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few. The debut album ‘One Long Saturday Night’ is available for sale, along with some very stylish merchandise, through their website as well as at live shows. When asked for a quote about the band, producer and Nick Olivieri’s Mondo Generator guitarist Simon ‘Spud’ Beggs simply stated "BIG TRUCK rock!" No words have ever been more truly spoken. BIG TRUCK are now back in London promoting their album.

Afterspark's members Cate, Adam, Ed and Jude accidentally wrote some songs together at the start of 2006 and since then have played on radio shows and at gigs and festivals across the country.

The band plays a dynamic mixture of soaring vocals, foot stomping rhythms and subtle textures that range from the tiny sublime to the beautifully unflinching. They have an album 'Sometimes We Forget', self-recorded and self-funded, which you
can hear on the left, and they also have an EP 'A Simple Life', both of which are available from afterspark.co.uk

Ah yes, you always know exactly where you are with Funeral For A Friend - 2001. This is mainstream rock by numbers, but no less enjoyable for it - catchy hooks, buzzsaw guitars, loud bits and quiet bits, crystal clear production, blah, blah blah... you know the score. If you're into that sort of thing, you'll love this. If you're not, then you'll probably still grudgingly enjoy it.

This is me taking the hiatus tag off and blogging about possibly my only love for the moment that keeps me going through days of horrendous mental torture.
One thing that truly surprised me, was how good 'breakout'(Miley Cyrus) was. I loved it on the first listen of the album. What I thought made the album truly stellar were the catchy hooks and how it fitted Miley's vocals perfectly. She doesn't have the best vocal range and strength, but what she has is that rock-ish, raspy growl that fits the songs in 'breakout'. songwriting credits from eight out of 12 songs are attributed to her which pretty much had my impression of her do a 360 turnabout in the positive direction. To quote Joanna Hunkin from the New Zealand Herald,

' You may not like her, or what she represents, but you've got to give the young lady credit for creating an album of fun, catchy pop music, devoid of the electronic vocal assists and fuzzy distortion that has become endemic to the genre. Think Britney, Kylie and the terrible Pussycat Dolls.'

Slight disagreement on the last sentiment, it should've been Lindsay Lohan instead of PCDs.

I've been reading some of my posts (i'm the only one) and I noticed in this one that I was hoping to get a new guitar. Well I got one in the end, and it's a rather strange story. So I basically said I used to be in love with this guitar called the Fender Toronado GT HH. It was a dream of mine since I was about 14, when I started playing electric guitar. It was just so beautiful, it has this racer stripe down the middle which is really nice, amongst being fitted with two seymour duncan pick-ups (badass).

Well unfortunately they went out of production, no-one had ever heard of them compared to strats. It was a huge shame, because the time I finally want to get one, they're gone, completely! As you know I contacted Fender, they had none. All the internet shops had sold out, and they don't appear on ebay that often.

Anyway, a couple of months ago I get a picture message from one of my band mates, and it's a picture of a Fender Toronado GT HH in a music shop that is near mine! What are the chances? A guitar that's been my dream for years goes out of production and then amazingly one turns up in my local music shop! Anyways, I got it for my birthday, and this thing is amazing. I paired it with a Zoom G2.1u guitar pedal, and it's so nice! I'm glad I bought it.

That brings me round to one last thing. Gigs. I'm going to see Funeral For A Friend in November or something, I think. My gym friend is going to be in the army so he gave me his ticket. And there will be another gig too, my bands. Our first gig hopefully we will be able to book one and play soon. It's going to be great! Providing we can get some more decent songs out.

That is all for today, later.

MOE to ucieczka przed życiem, stagnacja, znajdowanie uzasadnienia w (jakże wygodnym) trybie odludka. MOE to zaraza i choroba.

The Man of Steel fell for the first time and in the nine issue story arc “Funeral for a Friend”, we learn how the world deals with the loss of its greatest hero and what happens next. The first two issues (Justice League America #70, The Adventures of Superman #498) deal with the reactions of the people close to the hero, first the Justice League and other superheroes, and then Lois Lane, the Kents and the rest of the world. In Action Comics #685 the question of what will be done with the body emerges and director Westfield of Project Cadmus tries to take the remains of both fighters with him to his lab. Superman’s friends however will not stand for that and they recover the body and together with Lex Luthor II an enormous funeral is prepared. The funeral procession to Centennial Park, where Luthor has created a ginormous crypt to house the remains of the beloved hero, seems to be attended by the whole populace of Metropolis and sadly the heroes have to make sure that no riots break out. Both the Kents and Lois miss out on the opportunity to be near their loved one, because of the mass of mourners attending the funeral. It is especially hard for them because nobody knows that Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same and so officially Clark is only “missing” after the events of Doomsday’s attack.

A week has passed and in Superman v2 #76, the members of the JLA read Superman’s fan mail and decide to do some good in honor of his death and the Kents travel to Metropolis to comfort Lois. I must admit that this short story element feels a bit overdramatic, but the cheesy moment passes fairly quickly when the reader learns that Project Cadmus has broken into Superman’s tomb and has stolen the body. Supergirl investigates the break in and discovers that the grave robbers have entered the crypt through the tunnels leading to the Underworld (The Adventures of Superman #499). In the same issue we see that Gangbuster decides to come out of retirement in order to help in the protection of Metropolis. Meanwhile the scientists at Project Cadmus try to identify Superman’s D.N.A. in order to clone his body (Action Comics #686). The Kents have returned to Smallville and we see how Jonathan Kent deals with the loss of his son, through a few flashbacks to Clark’s youth (Superman: The Man of Steel #21). He blames himself for the death of his son, as it was he who originally came up with the idea of the secret identity and the costume to turn Clark into Superman. In the meantime the Underworld in Metropolis has been flooded due to an explosion that was caused by the grave robbers and Lois and a few of the Underworlders break into Cadmus and try to retrieve the body. At the end of this issue, Jonathan Kent collapses in the field where he had found Clark’s ship, so many years ago. In the final issue of “Funeral for a Friend” (Superman v2 #77), Mr. Kent is rushed to the hospital and at the same time Lois makes plans with Luthor II and Supergirl to get Superman’s body back. When they have returned the remains of the superhero to his final resting place, Luthor shares his grudge with the silent coffin and we see that he is still the same tyrant he was, before he cloned himself (For those of you who don’t know, Lex Luthor had radiation poisoning and before he died he made his scientists put his mind into a younger cloned body of himself). At the end of this tragic story arc, Jonathan Kent flatlines as the doctors try to save him.

There are also three one-shot issues that came out following the “Funeral for a Friend” arc. The Legacy of Superman includes a few short stories about other heroes and their attempt to fill in for Superman. Supergirl and Team Luthor shows Lex team up with his Supergirl imitation to form his own superhero team and finally the Newstime issue, a real news magazine, filled with stories about the death of Superman and the repercussions.

I must say that some of the issues where a bit too cheesy for my taste, the emotions didn’t feel right except for those of Lois and the Kents in Superman v2 #76. All the others seemed a bit over the top, making it feel more like a soap opera than a comic book. Still, I think that “Funeral for a Friend” shows that comic book stories are not only about superheroes pummeling the bad guys, but that they too can have deep story arcs and emotional elements. It is interesting to see that the death of a hero like Superman is felt throughout the world. I liked the Death of Superman storyline so far and I’m interested to see if the next arc will be equally interesting. It is called “Reign of the Supermen”, will deal with the emergence of several Supermen, and will be reviewed here as soon as I get around to it.

Najlepsze według mnie koncerty dali Riverside, Dezerter i Buldog. Fajnie było również na Kulcie, Funeral For A Friend i Yava. Dwie kapele natomiast były obsadzone w kiepskim czasie - Indios Bravos grali na otwarcie, gdy było jeszcze mało ludzi, a Kasia Nosowska z kolei grała za późno i jej repertuar bardziej usypiał, niż nastrajał do zabawy (mimo super brzmienia i fajnych numerów).

Zapraszam do obejrzenia zdjęć z koncertu, które popełniliśmy z ekipą :)

No, a niedługo (30 sierpnia) urodziny Vadera w warszawskiej Stodole. Sam Vader będzie tylko miłym dodatkiem do doskonałego składu koncertu, wystąpią bowiem jeszcze: Samael, Entombed, Nile, Marduk, Gorefest, Dismember, Rotting Christ, Grave, Septicflesh.

Elton John is one of those artists who has inspired me, impressed, frustrated, annoyed, irritated, despaired me beyond belief, and then made me learn to appreciate all over again, ever since the release of his album "Tumbleweed Connection" in 1970, an album which was played to death by the staff at Kennedy's Records behind the market in Leeds.

This simply superb tune, which must be played at maximum volume - its the law - comes from the 1973 double album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" which was my anthem album during our visit to the USA early in 1974, the four channel audio system on the Boeing 707 that whisked us off on the 16 hour flight to Las Vegas played this track and three others from the album on a continuous loop and I listened to it for the whole of that time whilst reading Spike Milligans "Puckoon", this knowledge of the intense brainwashing that I undertook on the outward and inward flights will now explain a lot of things about me to you.

I lost Elton John from 1976 onwards, he produced nothing of worth for me until 2001 when he released his "Songs From The West Coast" when by his own admission he threw off the detritus that had surrounded him for 25 years and went back to write with Bernie Taupin again, and record using the very simple techniques that they had used in the early seventies on analogue equipment, listen to that album and its like a throwback to the seventies, superbly crafted songs recorded with a sound that is intangible but very definitely different to the digitally perfect stuff you find in studios now.

So just to turn full circle here is Elton John and his old 1970's band reunited for a tour in 2001 to promote the "Songs From The West Coast" album, performing "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, the introductory tracks from his "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album...

The first major event that I want to cover is The Death of Superman. The review series will be split into three parts (Doomsday, Funeral for a Friend and Reign of the Supermen) and finished off with a review of Superman – Doomsday the DC Universe Original Animated Movie. All of these storylines were collected in independent graphic novels, but I will use the individual comic book issues to map out the events that lead up to and followed Superman’s death.

Let’s start off with four one-page panels originally published in Superman: The Man of Steel #017, Superman v2 #073, The Adventures of Superman #496 and Action Comics #683. These are not actually stories but only single pages attached to the end of these four books, showing a fist trying to punch through a metal wall. They were supposed to prepare the readers for the upcoming event. When the fist finally penetrates the prison, something terrible is unleashed, a force so destructive that it would bring terror to the world. When asked where the idea for the storyline that would kill the Man of Steel came from, Editor Mark Carlin stated in an interview once that: "the world was taking Superman for granted, so we literally said 'let's show what the world would be like without Superman'."

Next week I will look at Doomsday, the main event that led to the death of Superman.
