<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On large scales, the Universe is homogeneous and isotropic. This means that no matter where you are located in the cosmos, give or take the occasional nebula or galactic cluster, the night sky will appear approximately the same. Naturally there is some 'clumpiness' in the distribution of the stars and galaxies, but generally the density of any given location will be the same as a location hundreds of light years away. This assumption is known as the Copernican Principle. By invoking the Copernican Principle, astronomers have predicted the existence of the elusive dark energy, accelerating the galaxies away from one another, thus expanding the Universe. But say if this basic assumption is incorrect? What if our region of the Universe is unique in that we are sitting in in a location where the average density is a lot lower than other regions of space? Suddenly our observations of light from Type 1a supernovae are not anomalous and can be explained by the local void. If this were to be the case, dark energy (or any other exotic substance for that matter) wouldn't be required to explain the nature of our Universe after all…</p>
<p>Dark energy is a hypothetical energy predicted to permeate through the Cosmos, causing the observed expansion of the Universe. This strange energy is believed to account for 73% of the total mass-energy (i.e. E=mc2) of the Universe. But where is the evidence for dark energy? One of the main tools when measuring the accelerated expansion of the Universe is to analyse the red-shift of a distant object with a known brightness. In a Universe filled with stars, what object generates a "standard" brightness?</p>
<p>Type 1a supernovae are known as 'standard candles' for this very reason. No matter where they explode in the observable universe, they will always blow with the same amount of energy. So, in the mid-1990's astronomers observed distant Type 1a's a little dimmer than expected. With the basic assumption (it may be an accepted view, but it is an assumption all the same) that the Universe obeys the Copernican Principle, this dimming suggested that there was some force in the Universe causing not only an expansion, but an accelerated expansion of the Universe. This mystery force was dubbed dark energy and it is now a commonly held view that the cosmos must be filled with it to explain these observations. (There are many other factors explaining the existence of dark energy, but this is a critical factor.)</p>
<p>According to a new publication headed by Timothy Clifton, from the University of Oxford, UK, the controversial suggestion that the widely accepted Copernican Principle is wrong is investigated. Perhaps we do exist in a unique region of space where the average density is much lower than the rest of the Universe. The observations of distant supernovae suddenly wouldn't require dark energy to explain the nature of the expanding Universe. No exotic substances, no modifications to gravity and no extra dimensions required.</p>
<p>Clifton explains conditions that could explain supernova observations are that we live in an extremely rarefied region, right near the centre, and this void could be on a scale of the same order of magnitude as the observable Universe. If this were the case, the geometry of space-time would be different, influencing the passage of light in a different way than we'd expect. What's more, he even goes as far as saying that any given observer has a high probability of finding themselves in such a location. However, in an inflationary Universe such as ours, the likelihood of the generation of such a void is low, but should be considered nonetheless. Finding ourselves in the middle of a unique region of space would out rightly violate the Copernican Principle and would have massive implications on all facets of cosmology. Quite literally, it would be a revolution.</p>
<p>The Copernican Principle is an assumption that forms the bedrock of cosmology. As pointed out by Amanda Gefter at New Scientist, this assumption should be open to scrutiny. After all, good science should not be akin to religion where an assumption (or belief) becomes unquestionable. Although Clifton's study is speculative for now, it does pose some interesting questions about our understanding of the Universe and whether we are willing to test our fundamental ideas.</p>

<p>Whatever is there is dwelling in god.  Where ever there is creation (galaxies, stars, planets), where ever there is destruction and where ever there is nothing, its all happening in God.  God has always been there and it will for ever and we are so small, helpless with a few grams of brain in our head, we cannot say that god and us are different. </p>
<p>Like a wave forms in an ocean, it takes shape and size, it rises up, and then it falls and vanishes.  The wave was a part of ocean, it got created in ocean, it tried to rise (that is its life), then it died and become part of ocean.  Same is we and god. </p>

<p> <span style="font-size:x-small;">The</span> primitive man worshipped forces of nature, to say - fire, lightening and thunder, rains; certain animals like elephant, snakes, certain birds; trees; and other things which he could think in a way helped his course and to pacify them. </p>
<p>Some Gods were invented out of good luck, well being, and prosperity. They even exist now in some old cultures and tribes.</p>
<p>Then man began to think logically and the old Gods were discarded and came the new ones which were more powerful and sounded real.</p>
<p>‘<span><span>Sanatan</span></span> <span><span>dharma</span></span>’ which means from the time immemorial was prevalent in Indian subcontinent for ages. Hindus considered <span><span>Sanatan</span></span> <span><span>dharma</span></span> not as religion but as a way of life. Their holy book 'Vedas' give the concept of ‘<span><span><a href="http://oshoworld.com/" target="_blank">Tatvamasi</a></span></span>’ means ‘He is I’. I stands for everything, matter as well as energy. Then came Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and other religions. The other ideologies like Zen, Confucius, Sufis, etc., followed.</p>
<p>It is strange to note that 3000 years back, there were hardly any religious battles fought. But within the past 3000 years, man came up with so many religions and more than 15,000 religious battles were fought just to prove the supremacy of one religion over the other.</p>
<p> No religion or God practice violence, but history is full of such incidents.</p>
<p> Later, the primary religions were further divided into sects due to difference of opinions; and it happened in every religion. Following this, came up small sects and a large number of self-acclaimed Gods everywhere in the world adding to the list of Gods.</p>
<p> A baby grows up watching his parents worshiping God and thinks that it is a world created by ‘that’ God which they worship. But as he grows up, he finds he was wrong. It is not like this as ‘one God of the world’ but it is like ‘My God of the world.’</p>
<p> I always wonder that among the millions of galaxies scattered in the universe, we know about Gods of only our galaxy that is Milky Way and that too of only our solar system and our planet earth. What if there is life like us in other planets and stars of our galaxy. Which religion would they be following?</p>
<p> And this is only about our galaxy. There are millions of galaxies in the universe and there are innumerable solar systems, stars, planets. And if there is life out there and people believe like we in some form of God; which God would that be? Will it be Hindus, Buddhists, Christians or what? But when we have difference of opinion in our planet and therefore too many religions won’t there be millions of religions and billions of Gods in other parts of the universe. That would count around more than the total population of our planet.</p>
<p> It’s very difficult to understand that we fight in the name of God. Can you imagine a person kills other person only because his religion is different from his own religion. While committing this crime don’t he think that the man he is killing in the name of God is also a creation of God. You make the God happy by killing God’s creation. Contrasting!</p>
<p> The prophets and the messengers sacrificed themselves for us for what? To fight over their names or what? They sacrificed because they wanted to prove by their sacrifice that their life was for others, to spread the message of love. They never killed anyone; instead they got killed for others. Why cannot we understand their sacrifice?</p>
<p> <em>The concept of <strong>'The God Within'</strong></em></p>
<p>The definition of God is <em>omnipresent, omnipotent, and who is free from the constraints of dimensions of time, space</em>, etc. If we follow the above definition then we will come to know that it is all God and nothing else.</p>
<p>All the planets, stars, galaxies, the indefinite expanding universe, everything is in God. That means all living and nonliving things are part of God. We are born, we breathe, and we die in God. There is God outside us and inside us. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, the rains, the nature, the matter, energy, the creation, the destruction. Every cell of our body is God.</p>
<p>That is why we cannot see him. If we want to see him then we must stand as a separate entity from God which is not possible because where we will we stand separate; anywhere we move, we move in God. When we consider ourselves as separate from God, we can’t see him and when we accept God as omnipresent, then we cease to exist because we are in him only.</p>
<p>So, if we are part of him, what do not we feel like him, what are we full of miseries? Because of our ignorance!</p>
<p>We just have to be aware, aware that we are dwelling in God; God is within us and everywhere. The awareness will make us to see things in clarity. That there is no such thing like miseries or pains, good or bad, birth and death. It is all but one single entity as God.</p>
<p>Only <em>a person who is aware that there is no pain or pleasure, birth or death can sacrifice his life for others with a smile on his face</em>.</p>
<p>Where comes this awareness from?</p>
<p>It is here in our heart. God is not far away. Is very close, closest to us! More closer than anything! Just be aware of him and do nothing else. And the only way to do that is to stop, be silent, sit quiet with closed eyes and start the journey within.</p>
<p>It is very difficult to start within because we have learnt for ages that journey is meant to be outside away our body.</p>
<p>But this is a different journey, spiritual journey, journey to the innermost core of our soul.</p>

<p>I love the above quote, taken from <a title="Discovery News" href="http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/07/11/galaxy-stars.html" target="_blank">this Discovery News article</a>, because of the way that it is worded.  It sounds like Mr. Capak is speaking about something that supposedly happened a long time ago (and considering that the Universe is estimated to be around 13 billion years old, early on is a really long time ago indeed) in present tense.  Why I like this is because, essentially, a lot of what we are looking at way out in space did happen a long time ago.  This all has to do with the speed at which light travels.</p>
<p>Light is fast.  In fact there isn't suppose to be anything faster (though I remember reading something not too long ago about some experiment that aimed to show that something could theoretically travel faster than light, I cannot recall the exact details unfortunately).  It travels at about 186,282.397 miles per second.  But the Universe is a really big place and so even at the amazing speeds at which it is traveling light takes time to get from point A to point B.  What this means is that a lot of the light that we see from stars in the night sky has taken quite awhile to reach Earth.  We talk about light years, which is a measurement of the amount of distance light will travel in one  year.  Alpha Centuri, our closest neighboring star, is about 4.37 light years away from our solar system, meaning that if we were to travel at the speed of light it would take us about four and a third years to get there from here.  Observing the red shift (an increase of wavelength of electromagnetic radiation) of distant stars and galaxies, showing us that they are moving away from us, and doing some math (probably some type of triangulation) scientists are able to estimate a general idea of how far away said light sources are and thus determine how long ago the light originated.  In this way, the light that we receive from distant stars and galaxies is actually old because it has taken so long for that light to reach us (the light from Alpha Centuri is 4.37 years old).  What this in turn means is that people like Mr. Capak can talk about an event that happened a long time ago in present tense because we are observing the light of the ancient occurrence in our present day. </p>

<p>Being a fan of Geometry Wars since it was first playable in the garage of Project Gotham Racing 2, I was over the moon when I heard this was coming out for the Nintendo DS. Just think, a portable version of one of my favourite and addictive arcadey type games!</p>
<p>My first worry was that it wasnt going to port very well to the DS and that the controls would take a long time to get used to, or worse, being too fidly to be able to concentrate without getting hit by something in game. I was so glad that neither of these was the case, the controls are really easy to learn and pick up, plus you can even customise how want to play. Do you want the game on the top screen with a radar on the bottom where you touch and shoot your weapon? or do you want to<br />
forget the stylus and use both the D-pad and face buttons instead? in my case I prefer to have the game on the botton touch screen AND touch to shoot. And if you're left handed don't worry, theres a flip controls option for you guys too!</p>
<p>Ok now we know that you can customise HOW you want to play, how about what you get and playing the game. Geometry Wars: Galazies comes with Geometry Wars Evolved included so you can play that till your hearts content to get a high score and even upload it to see where you rank in the world (more on that later). The main game, Galaxies is where the main action is. You have to remember that I am a huge fan of this game so apologies if I sound over-enthusiastic about it!</p>
<p>Galaxies takes place in, well, a Galaxy with quite a few solar systems in there, your first solar system can be accessed for free, the other ones you need to unlock with 'Geoms', inside these solar systems there are planets and each planet is a Geometry Wars level.</p>
<p>You may think that Geometry Wars Galaxies features the same never changing square arenas as Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on the X-Box LIVE Arcade, that is not the case however, as it does in fact consist of different shaped arenas, and also includes other changes such as moving indestructable scenery, scenery that drops mines that can be made to cause a chain reaction of explosions, different enemy types, and bonus multiplyers that need to be picked up (these are the Geoms, which is also your currency to buy upgrades for your drone and unlock future levels).</p>
<p>I will now talk about this drone I previously mentioned. Unlike Retro Evolved you now have a small drone which is a small droid that flies around your craft which will behave in different ways depending on what you tell it to do at the start of the level, you cannot however change its behaviour during the level. Different drone behaviours include Attack, Defend, Turret, Bait etc which do just that. A drone that acts as a turret will stop on the screen and shoot constantly in a circle for about 10 seconds then resume following you, it will repeat this again after taking a rest, Bait will draw enemies away from you, Attack will shoot nearby enemies, you can figure out the rest.</p>
<p>Unfortunately Galaxies doesn't include an online worldwide multiplayer mode although you can play your friends in a local game, the only online function would be the Leaderboards so you can check to see where you rank in the world, obviously providing you have a wireless network or are near a wireless hotspot. There are co-op and verses mode to play with your friends that will be flying around in a slightly different shaped ship.</p>
<p>Overall if you're a fan of Geometry Wars Retro Evolved then you should love this, its great for a pick up and play if you have a few minutes to spare as well as playing for long sessions should you get addicted to it like I do.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="text-decoration:line-through;">Yesterday</span> A few weeks ago I attended an event at Microsoft's Silicon Valley Research Center and learned about the technologies of the future.</p>
<p>Well, sort of. What I saw was an overview of what Microsoft is doing in the area of R&#38;D-- research and development.<br />
Microsoft is planning on sticking around for a while, and they understand that technology is <strong>innovation</strong>... not a stagnant build-it-once-sell-it-a-million-times type thing, like a paperclip.</p>
<p>This from <a title="Microsoft Research Division's Website" href="http://research.microsoft.com/" target="_blank">their Website</a>: "Microsoft Research is dedicated to conducting both basic and applied research in computer science and software engineering. Its goals are to enhance the user experience on computing devices, reduce the cost of writing and maintaining software, and invent novel computing technologies."</p>
<p>It was an interesting and informative event, and I want to take a minute and thank those folks involved.</p>
<p>* The keynote technology displayed was a program that is available now, and it is pretty amazing -- especially when one considers the amount of data that must be accessed -- <strong>it's a virtual picture of the universe. And the best part is, you can explore it</strong>.<br />
Yes, you can fly to Mars... or Rigel.. or the crab nebula.. or the top of Mt. Rainier here on earth (Virtual Earth is one data source).</p>
<p>"A state-of-the-art combination of software and Web 2.0 services, WorldWide Telescope offers terabytes of high-resolution images, astronomical data, and guided tours that bring the universe to your fingertips<a href="http://techpaul.wordpress.com/2008/05/22/make-outlook-open-when-windows-starts/" target="_blank">.</a>" (again, from Website.)</p>
<p>This isn't just pictures folks, when you right-click on Mars (for example) and select Properties, you will be offered practically every known fact about Mars. This is an unparalleled learning tool!</p>
<p>The engine behind this is kind of hard to explain; maybe.. real-time, super-advanced PowerPoint? Infinite MSN Maps?<br />
But I don't have to try to explain it. You can see it for yourself, and I highly suggest you do. Simply stunning.</p>

None of you, both sides, by any chance will invite peace to land on our beloved motherland.</p>
<p>What are you, please think up something, compared to this 'Extravagant Energy' mostly misconstrued as god(s) when you see these grandeurs?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I saw a beautiful video today that highlights the smallness of our world, our globe. The Hubble Deep Field is a series on images that the Hubble space craft took of pockets of "nothing" in the sky to reveal vast arrays of galaxies with stars (suns) that we've never seen before and which, for some astronomers and other star-gazers, confirms and renews the belief that life exists elsewhere, that planet Earth is not the only planet of billions within millions of galaxies that sustains life.</p>
<p>As we grow as an international community highly aware of different peoples living on different continents, in different countries, within different counties or territories, dwelling in different cities and villages, within different homes, retiring to our different rooms or places within a room, our minds expand. We know more and more now of ways of being that were never revealed to us, even those well-travelled, before the spread of the internet. We have such ready access to more than we believed life could be. Space is the next frontier. For many, it has been the next frontier for decades. For the rest of us, it may be just beginning.</p>
<p>I don't know the slightest, nor do I have the smallest inclination of understanding, what life-after-interplanetary-communication will be like. Will life imitate the art of Star Trek or any one of the many space-oriented sci-fi films and series? Will we open our hearts or close our minds to the others out there? Will this opening frontier give us pause from the international warfare we wage on each other? Perhaps our views will expand so far that we will truly feel like neighbors with the citizens living on the opposite lines of latitude and longitude. Maybe.</p>
<p>This video, though slow-moving, shows so many beautiful images from space, including those of the Hubble Deep Field that has the astro-communities all a twitter. Enjoy the beauty!</p>

<p>These two beautiful and almost identical spiral galaxies in Virgo, imaged by the <a href="http://www.gemini.edu/about">Gemini South telescope</a> in Chile, are NGC5427 (the faced-on spiral galaxy at lower left) and its twin NGC 5426 (upper right). Together, they are known as Arp 271, named after <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halton_Arp">Halton Arp</a>.</p>
<p>Halton Arp is an American astronomer who had catalogues quite a numbers of unusual or peculiar galaxies titled <a href="http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu/level5/Arp/frames.html">Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies</a>, which almost all of them later turned out to be interacting and merging galaxies, which is <a href="http://mydarksky.org/2008/04/27/accidents-in-the-universe/">quite common in our universe</a>.</p>
<p>At a glance, the galaxies above appear undisturbed and the spiral arms are still intact and distinct. However, mutual gravitational interaction has already begun to alter and distort their visible features. Take another closer look and you will see a bridge of material connecting the two galaxies. This is a tell-tale sign of gravitational interaction between them.</p>
<p>Another sign of interaction between the galaxies is the pinkish knots that trace out the spiral arms in each galaxy. These are the star-forming regions. Where two galaxies gravitationally interacting, the disturbance causes the gases in them collide. This in turn causes the gases to compressed and collapsed to form stars, but not one or two stars, but a whole lot of them - bursts of star formation, or sometime is referred to as starbursts.</p>
<p>Although star-forming regions are common in many spiral galaxies, the ones in Arp 271 are forming at a higher rate, and more plentiful, than expected. Starburst activity can also be seen across the galaxy's 60,000 light-years connecting bridge.</p>
<p>Arp 271 now is only at their beginning of a violent encounter that will take 100 million years to complete. Over millions of years, the twin galaxies will pass each other, pull back, tangle again... this repeats several times, and finally they will end up as a large and featureless elliptical galaxy, leaving no sign that once upon a time they were a pair of beautiful spiral (except in our pictures on Earth, if we are still around...).</p>
<p>One last thought: The galaxies are 90 million light-years away from us, meaning that the image above <em>was what they looked like 90 million years ago</em>. Today, as we are admiring their beautiful spiral structures in the picture, in reality they may be so distorted that what was left is only a mess, gradually settling down to become an elliptical galaxy.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>I spent the next few days in somewhat of a fog.<span>  </span>The pain was a little less but the emotions were still strong and deep.<span>  </span>I went to see the doctor for my week follow-up visit.<span>  </span>She removed the splints in my nose.<span>  </span>When she reached up inside and clipped the sutures I felt a rush of pain into my brain center.<span>  </span>When she pulled out the splint on the first side Rafael said, “Holy Crap”.<span>  </span>They were really big and it was amazing that they could fit something 3 or 4” up into the nasal cavity.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>The relief of their removal was instantaneous. I had not realized the intensity of the pressure they were presenting until they were out.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:0.5in;margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span> </span>It was so wonderful to be able to breathe a full breath. I felt the right side of my face as a clear hollow space for the first time since I could ever remember.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>She told me I was doing really well and I did not need to return for 3 weeks.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>   </span><span>   </span><span> </span>Within 24 hours of the splint removal I was off the pain medication and my head started to clear.<span>  </span>My depression started to lift and I started having visions and memories of things I had not been seeing.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>For example, I saw Rafael as a Being who was here as human but also living on another planet in another galaxy.<span>  </span>This was pretty cool since it happened while I was sitting in bed, mid day and he was just walking by.<span>  </span>No meditation or anything mystical, just a simple clear vision of him being in two places at once.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>I started seeing others like Kyrie, my friend in her true form which is a Crystalline Being from a Crystalline Planet.<span>  </span>I started receiving information about my True Purpose here and the Purpose of The 144,000 and the Million Plus that are to be a part of The MultiDimensional Peace Project.<span>  </span>(I will blog about this in my next post)</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>I was still weak and had to stay in bed for anther full week.<span>  </span>I continued to sleep upright in bed.<span>  </span>After week #2 I started getting up a little each day to regain my strength.<span>  </span>I am today at week #3 and I am able to exercise some and be fully active each day.<span>  </span>Last night I slept flat in bed with only two pillows.<span>  </span>Rafael and all 3 dogs and I became a family again. </span></span><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;font-family:Wingdings;"><span>J</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:115%;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><span>          </span>I have become clear and in full remembrance of many, many things.<span>  </span>The energy has been extremely intense and powerful.<span>  </span>I have Awakened to a new level.<span>  </span>I am aware of everything but have noticed that I am not at effect of things that I used to be reactive to.<span>  </span>I see and observe some old patterns that arise but do not have the same perceptions about them.<span>  </span>I am different.<span>  </span></span></span></p>

<p>EA is finally letting go of some of their great game's features .. like the game to be released . Spore .</p>
<p>yesterday they've launched the Demo for that game under the name of Spore Creature Creator .. </p>

<p>For those who don't know what spore is, here is a little tip;</p>
<p>It's a game in which you can create your own creatures, nurture them till the point that you make an entire galaxy through what's called .. the Five stages ;</p>
<p>You of course start with a 1. SINGLE CELL .. and make your way through life by surviving in water ,, after that you start living onto land and make your own 2. Creature , of course you have to change the look and the physicality of the creature in order to survive using the creature creator. after having many creatures around you make your own 3. TRIBE. After much wars and concurs, you make your own 3. CIVILIZATION, in which the game takes a big turn of event , and you feel like you are in the future. Then the next stage comes on 5. SPACE, is the one that ups the bars and make your skin just tingle when you think of it. &#60;&#60; at least that's me . you invade planets , whole races , and even more. i can't really talk about how good of a game it is ,, you have to see it to believe it ;</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I'm writing a follow up blog with a little more information in response to Jenna's that was in response to my original one lmao (if that makes sense). I was gonna leave a comment but it's just way too long and I figured they are linked anyway so I may as well make a blog out of it. I promise that I'm writing about "the happening" as well, but Jenna hasn't seen it yet (and I know she reads this) so I'm waiting :)</p>
<p>yeah I'm fascinated with dark matter and energy (as we learned in Jenna's basement 2 years ago drinking killians... sans the twist off cap). Apparently (and I'm not sure on these  figures) 20% of the universe is made up of invisible matter. 70% of that 20% is thought to be dark energy and 25% is made up of dark matter.  Stronger gravity leads us to find dark matter, and and the theory of the accelerated universe can give kudos to the dark energy. They know something is there, because the gravity in those deposits (rather large, LARGE deposits might I add) have a super powerful gravitational pull, somewhat resemblance of one ginormous vacuum(s).</p>
<p>They have another theory stating that perhaps the reason there's so much dark matter vs. regular matter is because the universe is basically one sucking vacuum, and over great distance the gravitational pull weakens, which is where the 5% comes into play from the statistics left over. I THINK (but don't quote me on this either, I just woke up and haven't coffee-d and am in no way googling ANYTHING yet) this also has to do with the cosmic string theory about how the different galaxies are linked.</p>
<p>There's actually been data about a bullet cluster somewhat recently where there are two clusters of galaxies that ACTUALLY pass through eachother. 90% of a galaxy is not indeed ordinary matter (they think) but really "hot xray emitting intergalactic gas". The hot gas pummeled one another, while the galaxy was displaced. The dark matter which apparently is collision-less (probably because it's an asshoe vacuum of sorts) passed right through eachother. So essentially what happened was that the hot gas joined and collided as the galaxies passed through one another, and the actual galaxy and dark matter remained separate.</p>

<p>The bullet shape shows the force at which they actually collided and where the front one changed paths.</p>
<p>Essentially, the force of the dark matter around the galaxy is preventing it from getting pulled away. Their first "real" evidence. The problem with dark matter is that it's so hard to prove it's actual existence. It's there, but still only really in theory. It's practically invisible.</p>
<p>So about the Higg's field that Jenna was talking about- I plan on researching that up later. I'll probably write an addition to this one. I just haven't (still) had my coffee and my brain isn't functioning. That, and I have to work on a research paper and stalk the library. I shall return!</p>

<p>This is the Coma Galaxy Cluster, also known as Abell 1656, located 300 million light-years away. There are thousands of members in this cluster, easily dwarf our Local Group of only 30 over members.</p>
<p>This view of Coma Cluster by <a href="http://hubblesite.org/">Hubble Space Telescope</a> stretches several million light-years across, consists only a portion of the entire cluster, which is more than 20 million light-years in diameter.</p>
<p>Coma Cluster, as it name suggested, lies in the constellation Coma Berenices. <a href="http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/html/heic0813e.html">This portion of the sky</a> is way out from the plane of the Milky Way, hence it is easier to observe because it is not obscured by the dust and gas in our galaxy.</p>
<p>The cluster is a real collection of galaxies. There is abundance of elliptical galaxies, featureless brownish "fuzzy-balls" which contains old stars staying at the centre. Further out we have spiral galaxies with a distinctive disc structure. Then we have <a href="http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/messier/lenticul.html">lenticular galaxies</a>, galaxies that are something between an elliptical and a spiral. Lenticulars do show some structure - a bar or a ring perhaps - that may eventually give rise to more disc-like features. And also visible in the image are background galaxies that don't belong to Coma.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Astronomers have obtained unprecedented observational evidence of the role that supermassive black holes play in ending star formation in galaxies. The report was presented by Dr Sugata Kaviraj of Oxford University, UK, yesterday at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in St Louis, Missouri. This result is of special interest because it provides new insights into the role of black holes in the formation and evolution of massive galaxies.</p>
<p>A study by the Oxford scientists using ultraviolet light provides solid observational evidence that the stormy centers of galaxies powered by supermassive black holes — 'Active Galactic Nuclei' (AGN) — take over from exploding stars (supernovae) as the main mechanism by which the gas that fuels star formation is dispersed, as galaxies reach a critical size of 10 billion times the mass of the Sun. The results were recently published in the December 2007 issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (Kaviraj et al., MNRAS, 2007, 382, 960).</p>
<p>"Our models of galaxy formation are all based on the notion that Active Galactic Nuclei are involved in 'snuffing out' — quenching — star formation in galaxies which are too large for mechanisms based on supernovae to explain," says Sugata Kaviraj, Leverhulme-Beecroft Fellow in Astrophysics at Oxford University, UK, who led the research.</p>
<p>"Astronomers believe that the jets produced by Active Galactic Nuclei are powerful enough to 'blow away' star-forming gas from even the largest galaxies but up until now we have not had solid observational evidence to back this up. The jets produced by typical Active Galactic Nuclei would have enough energy to power ten billion stars like our Sun! Our study indicates, for the first time from a purely observational viewpoint, the relationship between the mass of a galaxy and whether supernovae or AGN play a dominant role in quenching star formation," says Kaviraj.<br />

<p>The scientific team from Oxford University, UK and the University of Hertfordshire, UK studied a special class of post-starburst galaxies, which lack ongoing star formation but whose spectra indicate that they formed a substantial fraction of their stellar mass in the very recent past. A vigorous period of recent star formation in these galaxies has therefore been rapidly quenched, making these objects perfect test-beds to probe the quenching process. The galaxies studied in this work are, by cosmological standards, nearby, at distances of 1.5 billion light-years or less.</p>
<p>Using a novel combination of ultraviolet data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (an orbiting space telescope launched by NASA in 2003) and optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (one of the largest observational surveys that uses a dedicated 2.5-meter telescope equipped with a 120 megapixel camera;), the scientists were able to measure the efficiency with which quenching takes place in individual galaxies with unprecedented accuracy.</p>
<p>"The work is very timely", stresses Marc Sarzi, Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire and academic visitor at Oxford. "Post-starburst galaxies are extremely rare objects and it is only thanks to the large volume encompassed by the Sloan survey that we could harness a significant number of them."</p>
<p>Kaviraj adds, "In the AGN regime, the quenching efficiency is expected to scale positively with galaxy mass, while in the supernova regime the opposite trend is expected. We also know that AGN become significantly more abundant in galaxies with masses roughly above 10 billion times the mass of the Sun. Our results demonstrate that the expected dichotomy in the relationship between quenching efficiency and galaxy mass is indeed borne out by the data, exactly across the expected threshold mass — 10 billion times the mass of the Sun!"</p>
<p>According to co-author Joe Silk, who is Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University and has pioneered the use of black holes in models of galaxy formation, "We simply do not understand the murky details of galaxy formation. Some form of 'feedback' is slowing down and quenching star formation in both nearby galaxies and the distant universe. These results point to the likely culprit being a combination of the effects of exploding stars and supermassive black holes, with black holes dominating in the massive galaxies, as envisaged in contemporary galaxy formation models".</p>
<p>Quantifying the role that AGN play in quenching star formation is of prime importance to astrophysicists as it would enable them to calibrate their models of galaxy formation. While the observations used in this study were of nearby galaxies, the challenge now is to confirm these preliminary results and widen the scope of the work to include a representative sample of galaxies: this would include those that are much further away, dating back to the peak epoch of star formation some 10 billion years ago, when the Universe was only 25 percent of its current age!</p>
<p>Efforts, led by Kaviraj, are underway to combine several large observational surveys that trace the evolution of the universe over the last 10 billion years, to study the properties of post-starburst galaxy populations. The research is expected to yield significant insights into the quenching process and provide valuable constraints on the currently accepted galaxy formation paradigm.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Astronomy concepts are always changing as new information comes to light. The latest theory to undergo revision is our concept of the structure of the Milky Way. As we reside in the thick of it, it's tough to see the proverbial forest for the trees. New findings may make a compelling case that the Milky Way has two major spiral arms, rather than four that have been theorized in the past.</p>
<p>A team led by Robert Benjamin of the University of Wisconsin used the recently completed Spitzer Space Telescope infrared survey of the Milky Way, spanning 120° of sky. Previous studies led astronomers to conclude the galaxy has a pronounced central bar and four major spiral arms named for the constellations we see in their directions: Sagittarius-Carina, Scutum-Crux, Perseus, and Norma-Cygnus.</p>
<p>Using custom software developed by Benjamin that counts stars and measures stellar densities, they mapped stellar distributions and noticed an increase in the number of stars where the Scutum-Centaurus Arm is thought to be. This agreed well with earlier studies.</p>
<p>But when the team targeted the areas of the Sagittarius-Carina and Norma-Cygnus arms, they saw no such increase. These two arms contain gas and clusters of young stars while the Scutum-Centaurus arm consists of both young and old star populations. What's more, it connects nicely with one end of the galaxy's central bar, as does the Perseus arm with the other.</p>
<p>Previous infrared studies hinted at the same results, but uncertainties remained. Spitzer's superior results plotted the distribution of over 110 million stars, as well as the extent of gas and dust within two degrees of the galactic plane.</p>
<p>However, a study by a team using data obtained by the Far Infrared Absolute Spectrometer (FIRAS) aboard the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite claims the Milky Way can only have four arms, neither evenly spaced nor identical in form.</p>
<p>Team leader Thomas Steiman-Cameron of Indiana University says the conflict in these studies arises because of strong C II and N II emissions seen within 30°of the galactic center in the FIRAS data. The Spitzer study is unable to account for these peaks.</p>
<p>The actual difference between the four-arm and two-arm models may only be what each team defines as a spiral arm; Benjamin's model does include four arms, but considers two major and the other two minor, due to stellar populations. Steiman-Cameron's study makes no such distinction.</p>
<p>Speaking of the Spitzer results, the survey is the largest, highest resolution infrared portrait of our galaxy ever recorded, consisting of more than 800,000 individual frames.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For several years astronomers have believed that the more massive a galaxy's central black hole, the larger and more massive the bulge of stars at the core will always be. But now it turns out that this rule, an excellent fit in most cases, doesn't apply in all. A recent survey of 32 flat, bulgeless galaxies by the Spitzer Space Telescope showed hefty black holes in seven of them, throwing the theory into question.</p>
<p>Yesterday at the 212th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in St. Louis, a team led by Marc Seigar (University of Arkansas at Little Rock) proposed another method of estimating the mass of black holes at spiral galaxy cores: the larger the central black hole, the tighter the galaxy winds its spiral arms around itself.</p>
<p>Seigar's group looked at images of 27 nearby spirals for which the mass of each central supermassive black hole is already known by other means. They noted that galaxies with the biggest black holes have tight spiral arms, emerging from the central bulge at angles of about 7°. But galaxies hosting smaller central black holes have looser spiral arms, with angles of up to 43° where the arms and the central bulge meet.</p>
<p>The next step is to expand this study to larger numbers and to look beyond the local region by examining galaxies at cosmological distances. Seigar expects that really remote galaxies, seen when the universe was significantly younger, contain smaller supermassive black holes than what we see in closer locales.</p>
<p>He went on to speculate that the main factor in determining the mass of a supermassive central black hole could well be the amount of dark matter concentrated in the galaxy. But at the moment he's more interested in ensuring that the simple relationship between spiral arms and black hole mass doesn't change as he studies galaxies up to 5 billion light-years away.</p>

<p>This is the 55-m mosaic of our galactic plane, broken up into five components, taken by NASA's <a href="http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/about/index.shtml" target="_blank">Spitzer Space Telescope</a> in infrared. More than 800,000 snapshots have been stitched together to produce this family portrait of stars in our inner galaxy. The image depicts an area of sky <a href="http://mydarksky.org/2008/04/16/common-stargazing-terms-2/">120 degrees wide by 2 degrees tall</a>.</p>
<p>The top strip is the far-left side of the galactic plane; second to top is the area just left of the galactic centre; the middle strip is the galactic centre; second to bottom represents the area to the right of galactic centre; and the bottom one is the far-right side of the plane. These panels represent more than 50 percent of our entire Milky Way Galaxy.</p>

<p>The swaths of green represent organic molecules, while the heat from warm dust is rendered in red. Star-forming regions appear as swirls of red and yellow, where the warm dust overlaps with the glowing organic molecules. The blue specks sprinkled throughout the photograph are Milky Way stars. The bluish-white haze that hovers heavily in the middle panel is starlight from the older stellar population towards the centre of the galaxy.</p>
<p>When we look up at the night sky, we can see a band of light stretches across the night sky. That band, commonly known as the Milky Way Band, is actually the flat, dusty disk of our galactic plane. Our Earth resides in this disk, roughly 26,000 light years from the centre.</p>

<p>Since the disk is very dusty, we cannot see through the disk with visible light. However, we can use infrared telescopes to see what would otherwise be invisible because infrared light can penetrate the dust. So, with Spitzer's dust-piercing infrared eyes, astronomers manage to look 60,000 light-years away into this fuzzy band, and saw all the way to the other side of the galaxy.</p>
<p>This is the highest-resolution, largest, most sensitive infrared picture ever taken of our Milky Way. It catalogued more than 100 million stars. This data can help us understand how massive stars form, map the galactic spiral arms and make a better estimate of our galaxy's star-formation fate.</p>
