Harvey is a part-time historian, part-time unicyclist. Recently, he wrote an essay on the benefits that would've resulted on the ecosystem if Genghis Khan would have ruled the Earth today.

" You see, Genghis Khan and the Mongols were nomads. That means they moved from place to place in order to find new resources while the used ones would have the time to regenerate during their absence. In this sense, they were way better than the sedentary people of, say, China, who had to take all of the resources around until there was no more. "

Harvey also told us about the many ecological advantages nomadism had over sedentarism. " You see, when the nomads would do their thing... I mean... When they would produce feces, well they would do it and some days later they would leave the place for some other area. While they were gone, the shits would disintegrate with the help of various factors including the elements and insects. Insects love shit, you know it. Well they would feast on that shit as if it was the greatest meal, the meal of the Gods themselves, and they would eat it all. When the Mongols would come back, the shits would be gone and they could put shit once again in that area and the process would repeat itself every time. Sedentary civilizations however, they can't move and they can't destroy the shits without getting shit all over themselves so they invented the sewers. But with the sewers, you needed water. That water, the Mongols didn't need it for their shits you know... And all of the water being used in the sewers, of course, is being polluted I mean with shits floating in it it's pretty obvious. "

Discorso differente per Mongol, epica ricostruzione della prima parte della vita di Temudjin, divenuto Gengis Khan.

Ho scelto di vederlo per compensare il fatto di essermi persa la mostra Gengis Khan e il tesoro dei mongoli alla Casa dei Carresi di Treviso, e  il film si e’ dimostrato interessante nella ricostruzione della vita dei nomadi tagiki, con paesaggi mozzafiato che da soli valgono il prezzo del biglietto.

Mongol non ha ambizioni di ricostruzione storica, attinge direttamente alla mitologia sorta intorno alla figura carismatica di Gengis Khan, condendolo con epiche scene di battaglia ma soprattutto con la romantica storia d’amore con Borte, moglie scelta a nove anni e amata per sempre; dalla pellicola emerge la figura di un leader generoso e saggio, ben diverso dallo stereotipo sanguinario dell’immaginario occidentale.

Mi e’ parso di scorgere tra le intenzioni della pellicola proprio  un messaggio  di comunione culturale   tra Europa e Asia: il film si apre sul volto di Temudjin che emerge dal buio e la pelle butterata, gli occhi socchiusi  mi hanno ricordato la maschera funebre degli Atridi, e la prima guerra che Temudjin scatena contro la tribu’ che gli ha rapito la moglie, in fondo  ha le stesse motivazioni della guerra di Troia. D’altro canto, le avventure di Borte che non esita a concedersi a diversi amanti pur di ricongiungersi con l’amato Temudjin, ne fanno una sorta di Angelica della steppa.

Si vocifera che questo sia  il primo capitolo di una trilogia che dovrebbe ripercorrere l’intera vita di Gengis Khan, io aspetto fiduciosa.

Il film racconta l'infanzia, l'adolescenza e l'ascesa al potere di Temugin (Tadanobu Asano), meglio noto con il nome di Gengis Kahn, grande conquistatore mongolo che riuscì a riunire per la prima volta le tribù mongole sotto il suo comando e conquistò gran parte dell'Asia.

Un ruolo fondamentale nella vicenda è svolto dalla sua sposa Borte ( Khulan Chuluun), da cui Temugin viene più volte separato ma nulla sembra scalfire i loro sentimenti. Essi si sono scelti sin da bambini, o meglio, è stata lei a scegliere lui quando si sono conosciuti la prima volta (molto tenera la scena della scelta della moglie da parte di Temugin bambino). Per recuperare la ragazza, rapita dalla tribù dei Merkit, il giovane muoverà guerra alla tribù e in questa occasione inizierà a dimostrare le sue doti di grande guerriero e di Kahn coraggioso e generoso con i suoi uomini.

Sicuramente il trailer inganna un po', perché ci si aspetterebbero epiche battaglie e tanta azione. Invece questo film è molto di più: è una storia ben narrata, che si sofferma sugli aspetti più umani e anche drammatici della vita di Temugin, sul suo amore per la sua donna e i loro continui abbandoni forzati e successivi ricongiungimenti; ovviamente le scene di battaglia non mancano, e sono anche molto realistiche, ma non rappresentano l'elemento principale della pellicola.

Infatti il regista Sergej Bodrov, autore anche della sceneggiatura insieme ad Arif Aliyev,  si è concentrato sulla biografia del Khan, basandosi su documenti storici, soprattutto su antichi poemi sulla storia mongola.

Ottima prova corale del cast, a partire dai protagonisti, la star giapponese Tadanobu Asano e l'esordiente Khulan Chuluun,  ma con un "cattivo" (Honglei Sun nei panni di  Jamukha, Khan fratello e rivale di Temugin) realmente all'altezza delle aspettative.

L'unico neo è rappresentato da molti, forse troppi, salti temporali che non vengono poi spiegati nel corso della storia.

Il film è stato candidato agli Oscar 2008 come "Miglior film straniero".

Conclusione: Consigliato.

El Santo Grial

• Tradicionalmente, el Santo Grial, es el cáliz, copa o vaso que usó José de Arimatea para recoger la sangre de Jesucristo en la Cruz. En casi todas las versiones de la leyenda, es la misma copa o vaso usado por Cristo en la Última Cena.

• El término «grial» proviene de graal, en inglés medio (1150–1475), del francés antiguo grail, del latín medieval gradalis. El mito del Grial ha fascinado a muchos, uno de ellos Adolf Hitler, quien ordena a Heinrich Himmler a buscarlo, este a su vez recluta a Otto Rahn, ambos fascinados por este objeto. Rahn escribió dos libros sobre el tema: Cruzada contra el Grial y La corte de Lucifer

El Galeón de San José

• Según cuentan los historiadores, el galeón San José fue el barco más cargado de tesoros provenientes de las colonias que salió desde el puerto de Cartagena hacia España el 7 de junio de 1708 bajo el mando del almirante José Fernández de Santillán. El galeón estaba lleno de piezas de oro y plata, que se calculan en, por lo menos, 5000 millones de dólares.

• Nadie previo que las condiciones del tiempo cambiaran de forma tan inesperada. De un momento a otro, las nubes cubrieron el océano, mientras una suave llovizna golpeaba la cubierta del barco.

• Cuentan que el buque empezó a acercarse a "El Expedition", un barco inglés comandado por Charles Wager. Empezó una gran batalla naval, en el efecto de la cual la nave española se fue a pique. La tragedia ocurrió a las siete y media de la tarde. El imponente galeón con todos sus tesoros se hundió a más de 210 metros de profundidad del Mar Caribe, convirtiéndose en una leyenda y el objetivo de vida de muchas personas, que a través de los siglos trataban de llegar a sus tesoros.

La Tumba de Nefertitti

• Nefertiti fue una gran reina de la dinastía XVIII de Egipto, gran esposa real de Ajenatón (Akenatón). Su nombre egipcio, nfr.u itn, nfrt.y.ty, se traduce como “Belleza de Atón, la bella ha llegado”. Su belleza fue legendaria, pero tras su imagen sublime, parece que su papel político y religioso en el desarrollo de la experiencia amarniana fue fundamental.

• Nunca se encontro la momia de Nefertiti, lo que hizo que su búsqueda fuera objeto de curiosidad y de todo tipo de especulaciones. El 9 de junio de 2003, Joann Fletcher, especialista en el análisis capilar de la University of York en el Reino Unido, anunció que se había encontrado la momia de Nefertiti en la tumba KV35 del Valle de los Reyes, en Egipto. Esta momia llevaba ya cien años descubierta, pero estaba sin identificar.

La Tumba de Genghis Khan

• Genghis Khan nació cerca del lago Baikal (en la actual Rusia) en el año 1167 y sería el líder de un poderoso imperio que abarcaría casi toda Asia y parte de Europa . Su verdadero nombre era Temujin. Era hijo de Yesugei, jefe y dirigente mongol, y bisnieto de Kabul Khan, líder de los mongoles que, supuestamente, fue envenenado por los Tártaros.

• En realidad Genghis Khan fue una especie de título a manera de reconocimiento por el genio y el coraje demostrado, por conquistas, batallas y liderazgo que lo llevaron a ser dueño y señor de Mongolia.

• Según la leyenda, para evitar el saqueo de su tumba, él mismo ordenó ser enterrado en un lugar de difícil acceso y sus lugartenientes acabaron con la vida de los 800 soldados que ayudaron a construir el templo funerario en un misterioso paraje llamado “Burjan Jaldún“. Este hecho propició que se crearan todo tipo de leyendas en torno al mausoleo y que se le atribuyera ser el escondite de grandes riquezas.

La Batalla de Anghiari

• La batalla de Anghiari (en italiano, La battaglia di Anghiari) es una pintura al fresco perdida, obra del pintor renacentista italiano Leonardo da Vinci. Algunos creen que está escondida en algún lugar del Salón de los Quinientos del Palazzo Vecchio de Florencia.

• Una pintura de Peter Paul Rubens en el Museo del Louvre, París, conocida como La batalla del estandarte, se cree que es una copia de la propia pintura de Leonardo. Rubens hizo la pintura en 1603, basándose en un grabado de Lorenzo Zacchia del año 1558. Hay varias diferencias con el original, pero Rubens logró representar la furia, las intensas emociones y el sentido de poder que estaban presentes en la pintura original

These guys have been going strong since 1996, and it seems like nothing can stop them! OG members of the band are still as dedicated as 12 years ago and working as hard. After touring the world and releasing dope material, they have a new record coming out soon on GSR Music which is called "All The Plans We Made Are Going To Fail", check that out for 15 tunes of catchy hardcore in the vein of Sick of It All, American Nightmare and Kid Dynamite! The release party of their new record is set for the 17th of May in Rome with Alone, La Crisi and Die!, who are playing their last show. They'll embark on a European tour from the 30th of May until the 8th of June, check their shows and go see them!

I really don't know where to start with these guys... these were the first people I hung out with when I moved from Brussels to Rome, probably some of the best people I've ever known. Apart from being really good friends, nobody can't deny that this band kicks serious asses! Featuring the best singer that Italy has ever witnessed (in my opinion), these guys play something between Cro-Mags, Cause For Alarm-era Agnostic Front and S.O.D., how good does that sound? They've got two records out, I think the first one is already sold out, the new one, "Anger", should be still available, get your copy as soon as you can!

I had known Bepi for some time when I first heard he was doing this band and I was so siked about it! They started in 2006 and released a Demo later that year. I couldn't make it to their first show (as it was in Switzerland with Lion of Judah), but I couldn't miss their second one, and that was so damn good! These guys put their whole heart into what they're doing, they've already done two European tours and have a brand new 7" out on Refoundation Records called "Kiss Dreams Goodbye", check it out!

These colossal men from Rome started shredding stages in 2001, rising from the ashes of many other hardcore and streetpunk bands there were in town. Through the last 7 years these guys have been playing all over Italy and Europe, they have released 3 full-lengths and they have a new record coming out on Countdown Records, called "Bring It Back" featuring Mr. Roger Miret as guest appereance. It's hard to express how much they kick asses on stage until you see them! Cro-Mags' rage mixed with the urgency of Agnostic Front and the streetpunk attitude of Warzone make this band one of the best around in Italy. The guys are embarking on a European trip from the 9th to the 17th of May, check them out! Kings of nothing, no one slaves!

Seeing this band parting ways is kinda sad, but at the same time it's good to see them doing it in a good way: no bullshit, no fights, no nothing... just the end of a band. These guys rocked on stage, they owned it and they lived for it, and they keep doing it in other bands. They're the perfect mix of 80's hardcore such as RKL, Gang Green, Black Flag, Bl'ast with a lot of rock'n'roll influences plus their guitarist is a damn guitar hero! US people may be already familiar with this band as Western Front Records released their 7" "I Hope You Die" overseas. May the 17th will be a bittersweet day for sure!

These dickheads from Venice started playing in 2002 and recently went through some line-up changes which brought them to a brand new sound. From the faster punk/hardcore vibe they used to have, they moved to an heavier and groovy hardcore, strongly influenced by bands such as The Icemen on Rest In Piece, still keeping their undisputed "fuck you all" attitude. They just came back from a European tour with Watch Your Step and have a brand new Demo tape out, so grab that from them. Their last record "Everybody Is Gonna Fall Hard" should be still available from Superhero Records, so get that too. These guys will mosh for food people!

This is a really cool band who came out kinda recently, probably late 2007 if I'm not wrong. It features really good dudes such as my bro Edo (who played with me in The Difference) as well as members of Rise From The Agony, Jet Market and the man behind Indelirium Records. They didn't play a lot of shows, but are working on a 7" which should be out on said label. You're singing along!

Freshness straight from the Rome area! In fact none of these guys is exactly from Rome although most of them study or work in town. They put up their Demo online and it's undoubtly worth checking it out! I seriously can't wait to see these fellas on stage, I'm sure they're gonna shred it! Good people in this band, past members of The Difference and Final Words plus current members of Think About and To Kill. I really hope these guys will release something soon, so siked about them!

After years of playing great live shows around Italy, these guys have finally been able to release their first record, called "Sarà Una Risata Che Vi Seppellirà" (This Laughter Is Going To Bury You) on Raged Records, and let me tell you it's a really good one! Featuring past and current members of Duap, Bier Kampf and Shots In The Dark, they play the good old fashioned punk hardcore fueled with alcohl and rage with a lot of streetpunk influences. Concerning the roman hardcore scene, they're for sure one of my fav bands when on stage... damn these guys kick some serious asses!

Watch Your Step started as a band in Florence in late 2005, I remember them playing their first show ever in Rome with Down To Nothing, not a lot of people that night but they did one cool show. Since then I've been able to check them out several times and even play with them a couple of times. In 2007 they toured Brazil for the release of their first full-length called "Taking You Down With Me" on Hurry Up! Records, plus they recently toured Europe with Gonna Fall Hard. They have a vinyl version of their record coming out really soon with a cool bonus track on it, keep posted on that. Bust it!

I think this is it. As I already said, tons of other bands around Italy that are worth checking out, these are in my opinion the best ones, those you can't sleep on, this is the Italian hardcore I like.

The Origin of Bangla new year and celebrating Pahela Baishakh

WE celebrate Pahela Baishakh or the Bangla New Year's Day today. Everything under the sun looks gay and cheerful and colourful, one is suddenly struck by the beauty of the grass, the sky, the trees - each and everything around looks pretty and radiates joy and happiness. It seems that the tired and weary sun of 1405 that set last evening carried along with it all the gloom, all the sorrows, all the melancholy and misery. Nothing that is painful or dull or dreary is left for 1406, and the sun rising with a new spirit and vigour this morning, rises in its full glory, radiating nothing gloomy, nothing sad, nothing pensive but only hope and happiness for the days to come.

 Pahela Baishakh is indeed a momentous occasion in the life of each and every Bengalee. It is the first day of Bangla calendar year. To every Bengalee, young and old, rich and poor, wise and ignorant, it is a time of gaiety to be celebrated with great merry-making, to be enjoyed in every possible manner, an occasion which enables us, in the words of Tennyson, to drink life to the lees.' It is a cruel irony of fate that a few orthodox Muslims in our country, shrouded by sheer ignorance, look down upon this Nababarsha festival, simply because they inadvertently consider it to be a festival of non-Muslim origin. But there is no shadow of doubt that the Bangla calendar that we follow today was introduced by the Muslims in this sub-continent.

The Pahela Baishakh so warmly celebrated all over the country today originated not from Bangladesh, but from an entirely different part of this sub-continent more than thousand miles away. What is more, the Bangla Saal was introduced not by any Bangladeshi but by a non-Bengalee in whose grandfather's vein flowed the blood of both Gengis Khan and Tamerlane.

Yes, what is popularly known as Bangla Saal today saw the light of day through an ordinance promulgated by Akbar the Great, the renowned grandson of Zahiruddin Muhammad Babar whose mother and father were descendants of Gengis Khan and Tamerlane respectively. It was to immortalise a momentous occasion, a crucial juncture of history that the great Moghul introduced this new system of calendar 415 years ago.

The calendar so introduced was originally known as Tarikh-e-Elahi and it was introduced on the 10th or the 11th March in the 29th year of Akbar's reign i.e. in 1585 A. D. It , however, dates from the day of Akbar's ascension to the throne of Delhi and commemorates his coronation as the Emperor of India in 1556. The Second Battle of Panipath and the Coronation of Akbar as the Emperor of India are indeed great events in the annals of history. The Moguls had nearly lost the throne of Delhi for good. Akbar was not even an adult when the life of Humayun was suddenly cut short on the stairs of his own library.

What is more, the mighty and competent Hindu general Himu, the Commander-in-Chief of Islam Shah, had conquered both Delhi and Agra and declared himself Raj Chakravarty. It seemed that the days of the Great Moghuls were numbered and they would be driven out from the sub-continent for ever. But the brave and indomitable Akbar rose to the occasion and faced the music with courage and conviction. With the able guidance and help of Bairam Khan, Akbar created history by defeating the invincible' army of Himu at the Second Battle of Panipat on the 5th of November, 1556. This was indeed a momentous occasion in the annals of history. It not only re- established the Moghul dynasty on the Indian soil but also ensured its continuation for many a year to come. As a result, the Moghuls ruled over this sub-continent with glory and greatness for three hundred years more. It was the greatest achievement in Akbar's chequered life and undoubtedly one of the greatest events in the Moghul history. It was to glorify and immortalise the historic event and also to facilitate the collection of revenue during harvest in a more systematic way that Akbar the Great introduced Tarikh-e-Elahi form the 10th of Rabiul Awal in 963 A.H.

It may be mentioned in this connection that from the very beginning of his reign, Akbar felt the need of introducing a uniform scientific, workable and acceptable system of calculating days and months through a reformed calendar. With this end in view, he commissioned Amir Fathullah Shirazi, a distinguished scientist and the most famous astronomer of the day, to make a recommendation for the reformed calendar. Abul Fazal, the renowned scholar and a minister of Akbar the Great, in his scholarly work Akbar Namah, gives details of the events leading to the new era under the Royal Forman of Akbar. Abul Fazal explains that the use of the Hijrah (Hegira) Era was unfair to the peasantry, because 31 lunar years were equal to 30 solar years and the revenue was collected on the basis of lunar years whereas the harvest depended on the solar ones. Abul Fazal was right because the lunar year consists of 354 days and the solar years has 365 or 366 days. Thus there is difference of II or 12 days between the lunar and the solar years.

The Forman (Royal Proclamation) ran as follows: "In this dominion adorning time and auspicious epoch, when a Qarn (cycle) of the victorious session on throne of sovereignty has elapsed, and good day of fortune has begun to smile, a world- obeyed' Forman was issued to the effect that the governors of the Imperial dominions, and the other offices of state and finance, who in accordance with their degrees and positions, are recipients of the royal favours, should know as follows:

'Whereas the great officers of the court have represented to us as follows:" It is not hidden from the Inspired Kind that the object of establishing an era is that the seasons of affairs and events may be known with ease, and no one has any occasion for alteration.

Suppose, for example, someone makes a contract, or takes a favour or a loan, and the period of execution be 4 years, 4 months: unless the exact date of the beginning be known, it will be difficult, or rather impossible, to determine the date of completion. It is event too that whenever an era has prevailed for a long time, the establishment of a new one opens the gates of ease and prosperity for all mankind.

The repeated representation of this body of men, and regard for their positions, prevailed and were accepted, and an order was issued that the new year, which followed close on the year of ascension, should be made the foundation of the Divine Era, and that the gates of joy and comfort should be opened.

Also that in the almanacs of India they (the almanac writers) should enter this new era instead of their discordant eras..... and that they do away with their various eras. And whereas in the almanacs current in India the years were solar, and the months lunar, we ordered that the months of the new era should be solar.'

Abul Fazal eulogises the Forman of 992 A.H. (1584 A.D.) in the following way: The pillar of the founders of the Sacred Era was the learned of the age, the Plato of cycles (Alwani) Amir Fathullah Shirazi whose title was Azad-ud-Daula. It was he who in a happy hour laid the foundation of this heavenward soaring edifice. Although the foundation (i.e. the Forman) took place in 992 A.H. yet the position of events dates from the beginning of the sacred accession of Akbar.

He further adds: The Forman ordered that the new year which followed close on the year of accession should be made the foundation of the Divine Era and accordingly the first of Muharram (the first month of the Hegira calendar) of 963 A.H. being close to the historic occasion was also made the starting point of the Tarikh-e-Elahi." Since the month of Muharram coincided with the Bengali month of Baishakh in 963 A.H., the month of Baishakh in Bengal was made the first month of the Bengali Era instead of the month of Chaitra which was the first month of the Shaka Era being practised in the then Bengal.

The months of the new Bengali Era (or Tarikh-e-Elahi) were initially known as Karwadin, Ardi, 'Vihisu, Khordad, Teer, Amardad, Shahriar, Aban, Azur, Dai, Baham and Iskander Miz. Nobody knows for sure how and when we started naming the months as Baishakh, Jaishtha, etc. It is presumed that these months, based on the names of the stars, were derived from the Shakabda which was introduced in 78 A.D. to commemorate the reign of the Shaka dynasty in this subcontinent.

The star-based names of the months were derived as follows:

1. Baishakh from the star known as Bishakha

2. Jiashthya from Jaishtha

3. Ashara from Shar

4. Sraban from Srabani

5. Bhadra from Bhadrapada

6. Ashwin from Aswaini

7. Kartik from Kartika

8. Agrahayon from Agraihon

9. Poush from Poushya

10. Magh from Magha

11. Falgun from Falguni, and

12. Chaitra from Chitra stars.

Some claim inadvertently that the Bangla calendar was introduced by Shashanka, king of Bengal, to commemorate his conquest of Assam. But records testify to the fact the Shashanka, son of Maha Sengupta, conquered Benaras and moved towards Chilka lake and never towards Assam.

The system of celebrating Nababarsha or Pahela Baishakh (Ist of Baishak) was also introduced by Akbar the Great. After introducing Tarikh-e-Elahi, he abolished the hitherto practised Muslim festivals and replaced them by 14 new festivals, one of which was Nawroze or the celebration of the New Year's Day. It was the celebration of Nawroze which enabled Prince Selim (later emperor Jehangir) to meet and fall in love with Meherunnisa (known as Nurjahan in history). It was again in one such Nawroze festival that the Prince Khurram (known as the Emperor Shahjahan in history) first came across Mumtaz Mahal, whom he immortalised through the great "poetry in marble" known the world over as Taj Mahal. Had there been no Nababarsha (or Nawroze) festival, there perhaps would be no Nurjahan, and no Taj Mahal.
