Garone uses a multi-story technique to good effect by exploiting our initial struggle to see how the characters are involved with the Camorra to reflect the confusion and chaos that their activities cause within their community.

Its unhinged and warring gangs, unlike the single-structured and better known Sicilian Mafia, showcase their machismo and greed to devastating effects.

The film gives us a true and harrowing insight as to what it means to be living under the shadow of an organisation where betrayal and death are the only things they can be sure of.

Daarbij komen nog eens die zwoele ochtenden die blijkbaar een soort energie uitstralen die sommigen onder ons tot een heftig maaien en snoeien beweegt.

Allemaal goed en wel maar er is toch één kleine keerzijde aan dat zomers groente-, fruit- en tuinfestival. En die keerzijde beleeft steevast haar hoogtepunt op donderdagavond. (<- klikken op eigen risico, en niet komen klagen, ik heb u gewaarschuwd !)

Ik durf ervoor wedden dat die schattige beestjes nog voldoende restjes vinden om er een gezellig zomers feestje van te maken, met mini mojitookes, mini tortilla's en genoeg groen om er 10 kruidtuinen mee aan te leggen. Ik zal volgende keer zeker aan deze schatjes denken, als ik iemand hoor zeggen: ,,van waar blijven die fruitvliegskes toch altijd komen?''

Made in 1958 but not released until 1960, this documentary was filmed at the Newport Jazz Festival at Rhode Island and according to Wikipedia it "mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America's Cup yacht races. The film is largely without dialog or narration (except for periodic announcements by emcee Willis Conover)."

Groups playing on the day included Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Anita O'Day.

Après une longue série d'échecs, c'est le premier coup d'importance porté dans la guerre indirecte que mènent les Etats-Unis en Somalie. Un tir américain précis a frappé, jeudi 1er mai à 2 heures du matin, une maison à Dusa Mareb, dans le centre de la Somalie, faisant une quinzaine de blessés parmi les voisins, mais tuant sur le coup une vingtaine de personnes à l'intérieur, dont l'un des chefs de l'insurrection islamiste, Aden Hashi Farah "Ayro".

Le petit homme d'une trentaine d'années, accusé par ses ennemis d'être le représentant d'Al-Qaida dans le pays de la Corne de l'Afrique où l'Etat s'est effondré en 1991, échappait depuis des années aux efforts des Etats-Unis et de leurs alliés régionaux pour le tuer. Cette fois, il se trouve, selon des responsables du mouvement insurrectionnel djihadiste somalien les "chabab" (la jeunesse), parmi les corps très abîmés tirés des ruines, identifiés seulement par leurs crânes.

Ainsi se termine la trajectoire toute de sang et de fureur d'un des piliers de la galaxie islamiste de Somalie. A peine sorti de l'adolescence, "Ayro" était devenu le protégé de la figure tutélaire du mouvement fondamentaliste armé dans le pays, Cheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys. Le jeune extrémiste appartenait au même sous-clan, les Ayr, très influent dans la capitale somalienne mais dont le bastion originel se trouve à Dusa Mareb.

Cheikh Hassan, préparant dans la clandestinité, au cours des années 1990, les bases d'un futur émirat en Somalie, avait envoyé "Ayro" s'entraîner en Afghanistan auprès des hommes d'Oussama Ben Laden, dont certains étaient passés par la Somalie en 1993.

"Ayro" n'avait pas le monopole des contacts avec Al-Qaida. Mais à son retour, il s'était bâti une réputation sur la base de son extrême violence. Il est soupçonné, notamment, d'être le responsable de l'assassinat de quatre Occidentaux travaillant pour des organisations non gouvernementales et d'une douzaine de Somaliens soupçonnés de coopérer avec des services de renseignement occidentaux.

Après 2001, la Somalie était devenue une tranchée secondaire de la guerre mondiale contre le terrorisme menée par les Etats-Unis. A Mogadiscio, nommé par Aweys à la tête de la milice du Tribunal islamique d'Ifka Halane, l'un des piliers de la "vague verte" qui allait amener les islamistes au pouvoir en juin 2006, il avait vidé le vieux cimetière chrétien et ses tombes italiennes datant de la période coloniale pour y bâtir un camp militaire destiné à ses éléments extrémistes, rejoints par des combattants étrangers.

Ses ennemis, à commencer par les leaders du Gouvernement fédéral de transition (GFT), structure soutenue par les chars éthiopiens, avaient décrété il y a quelques mois qu'il avait été nommé représentant d'Al-Qaida en Somalie. En 2006, un chef de guerre somalien payé par les services secrets américains pour faire la "chasse aux terroristes" et "ramener des responsables morts ou vifs" avait failli mettre la main sur "Ayro" au nord de Mogadiscio. En faisant exploser une partie des grenades qu'il conservait autour de la taille, le petit homme s'était enfui. Puis il avait échappé aux tirs d'avions américains AC130 dans le sud de la Somalie en janvier 2007.

Abdi Waal, son "chasseur", subrepticement de retour à Mogadiscio à la fin 2007, affirmait au Monde continuer sa traque. Dans une villa du sud de la ville, il visionnait inlassablement un DVD amateur où le leader djihadiste célébrait une victoire contre les forces éthiopiennes. Certains de ses combattants au teint très clair étaient incontestablement étrangers. C'est pourtant l'un de ses proches qui avait vendu l'enregistrement à l'ennemi de leur chef. C'est aussi un proche, selon plusieurs sources, qui a donné sa position exacte à Dusa Mareb, permettant son exécution à distance.

Cette mort, à forte portée symbolique, n'interrompra pas le cours de la nouvelle vague d'insurrection islamiste lancée depuis des mois contre les troupes du GFT et leurs parrains éthiopiens. Dans le sud de la Somalie, trente villes ont été brièvement prises par des insurgés qui se ravitaillent en armes à l'étranger, brisant peu à peu les ultimes structures du GFT. Les troupes éthiopiennes à Mogadiscio sont également malmenées par les insurgés qui pilonnent les réservoirs d'eau et les camions-citernes éthiopiens pour assoiffer le contingent d'Addis-Abeba, où les désertions se multiplient.

"Ayro" n'était sans doute pas le pilier de l'insurrection. Jeudi, des responsables "chabab" ont promis de nommer bientôt "plusieurs têtes" à sa place parmi lesquelles, sans doute, Ibrahim Aji Jama "Al-Afghani", dont le rôle dans la coordination de l'insurrection actuelle, menée conjointement par plusieurs groupes, est plus central et plus discret.

Subconsciously, this film also illustrates the transformation of initially grimy Manchester into a new modern city, full of vibrancy and expectation. Joy Division reveals the city’s significance in making the band sound so unique: music and Manchester are intertwined.

The chronological approach taken allows insight into the journey taken by the band. Strings of lyrics (“Your confusion, my illusion, Worn like a mask of self-hate, confronts and then dies.”) enhance the  soundtrack.

Not only does this film feature personal photographs, unseen live footage, and recently discovered audiotapes but it also features the participation of all the surviving band members (renamed New Order after Ian’s death). The poignant insights from Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris provide insight into the tragedy of their friend’s death…and life.

The change of band name should be adequate evidence that Ian was the true soul of the original group. He would dance in a dynamic trance as though he was possessed and overwhelmed, making it difficult to distinguish when he was actually suffering from his frequent epileptic fits. He was suffocating in his own life, expressing his need for help through music.

Despite the truism of his lyrics, his silent plea was ignored. Each band member and associate, excluding Anik his lover, claims that they overlooked any meaning in Ian’s lyrics as ‘it was just art’. Whilst many thought he was elevated on drugs, in reality it seems that it was his music that was controlling him. His self-expression was inevitably self-destructive.

To highlight the numerous covers of the seminal single “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, the audience is shown an iPod search screen. It proves that Joy Division still has a place in the hearts of its fans, but also it reminds us how, for all the developments in technology, the music remains powerful and relevant.

Joy Division is a compelling film. The truth is presented in statement: the integrity of New Order is evident, and the ‘not for the money’ approach taken by Joy Division is inspiring. New Order presents the rebuilding of a story, which begins with them: “they wrote great songs, and great songs never die”.

Monorail is a monthly film club with films selected and introduced by special guests. This month's selection is Jacques Tati's fourth film and features his comic creation, Monsieur Hulot, navigating a futuristic Paris. Here's a look at the trailer:

The film is famous for the huge set - dubbed Tativille - built specially for the production, along with the extended shoot which took over three years, 1964-1967, to complete.

Play TIme has had a chequered past. Originally filmed on 70mm to ensure the massive set was properly represented, the limited number of screens that could actually screen it led to the movie being converted to 35mm on its US release in 1973. Its running time has also varied over the years.

I watched Monsieur Hulot's Holiday a few years back and loved its gentle and clever comedy. This looks like another corker.

This screening will be introduced by Glasgow artist Toby Paterson and preceded by a short film, KH-4, about another Glasgow artist played by Bill Forsyth.

Wat mij dan onmiddellijk opvalt is dat wij Nederlanders zaken enorm complex kunnen maken. Zo zijn er levenscyclusanalyses (LCA) gemaakt van allerlei verwerkingstechnieken (verbranden, composteren, vergisten, enz.).

Die wetenschappelijke benadering is heel leuk, alleen moet je erg oppassen met de conclusies. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek staat of valt namelijk met de aannames die je doet. Zo werd een aantal jaren geleden geconcludeerd dat gft composteren net zo milieuvriendelijk is als verbranden. Dat zou betekenen dat je gft niet meer apart hoeft te houden. Daar is nogal wat commotie over ontstaan. Vervolgens is er een nieuw wetenschappelijk onderzoek (LCA) gedaan waaruit blijkt dat composteren toch wel milieuvriendelijker is. Dit kwam omdat men nu wel rekening hield met het feit dat compost ervoor zorgt dat je geen kunstmest hoeft te maken en het als veenvervanger kan dienen.

Levenscyclusanalyses staan nog in de kinderschoenen. Daarom neem ik ze nu nog met een korreltje zout. Het bemoeilijkt echter wel de keuze die je moet maken voor de verwerking van gft-afval. Wat is nu beter; composteren of vergisten, of...? Wetenschappelijk is er geen duidelijke voorkeur. Politiek wil men graag duurzaam bezig zijn en CO2-reductie halen.

Wat ik dan belangrijk vind; wat is het milieurendement? Oftewel hoe kan ik het meeste milieuresultaat halen met de euro's die ik in mijn portemonnee heb. Vooral die portemonnee is belangrijk. Dat is de portemonnee van de overheid die gevuld wordt door de belasting die wij betalen. Ben je bijvoorbeeld bereid om 100 euro per maand extra te betalen om 1 kilo CO2 te reduceren? Ik denk dat er maar weinig mensen zullen juichen. Mijn insteek is dan ook om met zo weinig mogelijk kosten toch een hoog milieuresultaat te bereiken.

Ik ben me daarom eens gaan afvragen; waar praten we nou precies over? Uit de CBS-site blijkt dat de (gehele) afvalverwerkende bedrijven maar een fractie aan CO2 uitstoten ten opzichte van andere bronnen zoals wegverkeer en de energieleveranciers. Dan is het logischer om je geld voor duurzaamheid in te zetten op die grote bronnen.

We zijn rond 1994 begonnen met het gescheiden inzamelen van gft. We zijn toen gedaald van 1500 kton per jaar naar circa -50 anno nu. Oftewel een enorme reductie van CO2.

Vergisten is qua CO2-reductie beter dan composteren. Vandaar dat velen gft willen vergisten. Bij vergisten wordt namelijk warmte/electriciteit geproduceerd. Let wel even op; gft bestaat voor 60% uit water en 20% uit zand. Alleen uit de resterende 20% kan energie worden gewonnen. Niet de meest efficiente techniek. Die CO2 reductie zal met vergisting van -50 naar -100 kunnen gaan. Niet echt veel als je het afzet tegen de daling vanaf 1994.

We zijn nu dus vooral in de marge aan het rommelen. Zo'n vergistingsinstallatie is high-tech met veel toeters en bellen. Veel kans op storingen. Kost ook meer dan composteren. Waarom al die energie steken in die gevoelige technieken? Waarom niet gewoon simpelweg composteren? Het geld wat je dan bespaart, kun je inzetten voor de echte vervuilers. Dat is pas duurzaam met energie omgaan.
