Il Foro Social Américas (FSA) fa parte del progetto Foro Social Mundial (FSM) nato nel 2001 e divenuto attualmente l'occasione di maggior rilievo in questo contesto per l'articolazione delle iniziative sociali, lo sviluppo del pensiero critico e la costruzione di alternative all'ordine neoliberale, guidati dalla convinzione comune che "un altro mondo è possibile".

Il FSM è uno spazio aperto per il confronto democratico di idee, approfondimento, riflessione e formulazione di proposte, scambio di esperienze e coordinamento dei movimenti sociali di rete, organizzazione non governative e altre organizzazione della società civile che si oppongono al neoliberismo, al dominio del mondo in senso economico e qualunque forma di imperialismo(1).

Le precedenti edizioni del FSA si sono tenute a Quito nel 2004 e a Caracas nel 2006.

Lamentablemente no es lo que pasa en Oh Guatemala!, no... enfrente de todos esos millones de guatemaltecos robaron no $10, sino poco mas de $11 millones... si MILLONES... y los responsables? supongo que estaran bebiendo un su coctel leyendo lo que los periodicos dicen... regocijandose con el texto "Dan por perdidos los Q2.83 millones" vista la incapacidad del Pseudo-Ministerio de Finanzas para pagar.

Pero se preguntaran quiénes son estos usurpadores? pues bien, son miembros del pseudo-Congreso de la Republica, los diputados Meyer y Morales... si si, no es noticia nueva que en Guatemala roben dinero... no es noticia nueva que existan miles de familias que aun no tienen casa despues del paso de las tormentas Stan, Mitch y otras catastrofes naturales, o que los estudiantes de escuelas públicas no puedan desayunar por falta de presupuesto y aparte de eso sus familias tengan que pagar para ayudar a construir/reparar la escuela (los alumnos se sientan en blocks, piedras o simplemente en el suelo). Ohhh, pero el dinero del pueblo a donde va??? a casas se inversiones (es como la n-ésima vez que escuchamos una situacion similar, luego de la quiebra de un par de bancos por la misma razon)... disculpenme la expresion pero: Quiénes putas se creen que son? disponen del dinero del pueblo y lo invierten para ganancia personal, y lo peor aun... son tan imbeciles* que lo pierden!!! (O bien son tan inteligentes que en algun lugar tendran su dinerito guardado!). El punto es que nadie hace nada... son pocos los funcionarios que denunciaron esta accion y qué hace el Ministerio Publico? dice que penas como esta se pagan con 2 ó 3 años de prisión... otra vez disculpen la expresion pero que coman mucha mucha mierda...

A pesar de este problema o de soportar buses llenos para regresar a casa - encomendandose a Dios Todopoderoso para no sufrir algun infortunio o algun robo (esta vez no me refiero a un robo millonario, sino a "simple" delincuencia) y continuando a rogarle a Dios que en caso pase al menos regrese vivo a su casa - entonces todos estos millones de guatemaltecos podran disfrutar de algo feliz en un dia tan tremendo: Ver a su seleccion nacional de foot ball jugarselas el todo por el todo para ir a un mundial... reviviendo la esperanza en Guatemala que al menos algo funciona!!!... sin embargo no teniamos la más minima idea que para colmo ibamos a terminar tambien mal el dia.

Los 13 millones de guatemaltecos mas millones de aficionados de la azul y blanco fuera del país estabamos pendientes la noche del miercoles para presenciar otra injusticia: El arbitro no vio 2 manos que hubieran significado dos goles para Guate, paró el juego en una jugada limpia en la que Guate tenia la oportunidad de gol, sacó miles de tarjetas amarillas por faltas inexistentes, favorecio a los gringos en todo sentido y para ajuste de cuentas sacó una tarjeta roja a un jugador que practicamente peleó con sudor y sangre una pelota y que de paso le partió la shola a un gringo maricon... si... gringos maricones puesto que llevaron mas agentes de seguridad que toda la comitiva del Papa... la fiesta se nos vino abajo cuando de una falta inexistente los gringos obtuvieron un tiro de esquina que fue a parar en las redes de nuestra seleccion... otra derrota, otro dia "normal"...

Oh Guatemala, cuándo empezaras a abrir los ojos y quitarte tu conformismo? cuándo subirá un presidente que sea capaz o al menos al menos tenga un coeficiente intelectual de 70 (el limite de inteligencia para ser considerado una persona normal o con problemas). Oh Guatemala, cuando harás que tu población crea en si misma y haga valer sus derechos? Oh Bella Guatemala! vive eternamente!!!

* Esta expresion de imbeciles me recuerda un articulo que leí acerca de la inteligencia, muy aplicable a todos los politicos deficientes del mundo. He aqui el texto:

Capacidad intelectual limítrofe. Coeficiente de inteligencia mayor a 70 y menor a 85. Presentan dificultad de desempeño social y laboral, de manera que requieren educación especial.

Estupidización afectiva. Tendencia a reír de cualquier cosa, de manera que el sujeto parece menos inteligente de lo que realmente es. En sentido estricto es un término erroneo cuando se considera como trastorno de la inteligencia.

Idiota-Sabio. El monosabio conceptualizado por Sir Longdon Down, como un individuo con gran capacidad mecánico-lingüística, sustentada en una memoria colosal, con muy pobre capacidad de aplicación práctica y teórica, así como deficiencias globales de coeficiente de inteligencia 40 a 50.

Sólo se reconoce una habilidad extraordinaria en el sujeto con grave menoscabo de sus capacidades intelectuales globales.

Habilidades en cálculos, habilidad de repetir cualquier discurso en cualquier idioma si omitir nada, etc. Ninguno de ellos es capaz de describir o transferir la técnica de cómo lo hace.

Estas habilidades pueden aparecer y desaparecer inexplicablemente, y pueden ser congénitas o adquiridas

This is the story of 30-year-old Francisco Pantaleon, an illegal immigrant from Mexico. He had a brain hemorrhage and is in a coma at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. The hospital wants to send him back to Mexico. They say they have the permission of his immediate family but his sister and a cousin have retained a lawyer to fight his deportation.

There is something about this story that just seems wrong to me. Have we, as a nation, forgotten what it is to be compassionate? Yes, we are talking about an illegal immigrant who has no insurance and will very likely need intensive, long term medical care. But we are also talking about a human being who has spent 11 years in this country working menial jobs to support his family and who, by no fault of his own, became sick. It seems to me on a purely humanitarian level he deserves to be treated with the same level of medical assistance offered to any citizen or legal resident. He is after all a human being.

According to his sister, Socorro, Francisco Pantaleon, 30, arrived illegally in the United States 11 years ago. He has two children and worked at a carwash but has no insurance. In mid-July Mr. Pantaleon suffered a severe brain hemorrhage. He is currently in a coma at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. His case has brought to light a little known policy of hospitals to send medically needy undocumented immigrants back to their countries of origin.

The hospital claims the immediate family has consented to have Francisco returned to Mexico. In a statement the hospital said that since there is "little hope for recovery" they have arranged, at their own expense, to send him to a hospital in Acapulco. Pantaleon's wife was not available to confirm or deny this.

Pantaleon's sister and cousin are protesting that arrangement and have retained lawyers in hopes of preventing it. "This is an injustice," said his sister, who worries that Pantaleon won't survive the trip or find adequate care in Mexico.

Legally hospitals are required to treat and stabilize anyone who is in need of emergency medical assistance, regardless of their immigration or insurance status. But here is where it gets murky: After stabilizing a patient hospitals are required to arrange to transfer patients to settings where they can receive adequate care said Doreena Wong, staff attorney for the National Health Law Program. The problem is nursing homes in Chicago usually will not serve undocumented immigrants who don't have health insurance or any means to pay for care.

"We can't arrange long-term care here, so we try to do the best we can in the country of origin," said Dr. William Chamberlin, chief medical officer at UIC Medical Center.

According to Sonal Ambegaokar, health policy attorney at the National Immigrant Law Center, this may put the hospital in the position of acting as an immigration agent by effectively getting into the deportation business. She suggests that their actions may deprive the patient of due process.

"It's important to make sure that hospitals aren't permitted to dump patients on an international level when they can't do it on a local level," said James Geraghty, a Chicago lawyer working with Pantaleon's sister and cousin.

The hospital is of course concerned with the cost of providing patient care with limited financial resources.

"Hospitals don't have the financial resources to meet all of the acute care needs [of patients without insurance], let alone take on all the chronic care needs that present with patients like this," Chamberlin said.

Howard Peters, senior vice president of government relations at the Illinois Hospital Association, said "the family ought to be grateful" that UIC found a facility in Mexico willing to take Pantaleon and volunteered to pay for the trip.

The New York Times has a similar story about Luis Alberto Jiménez, another illegal immigrant who suffered brain damage after being involved in a car accident with a drunken driver. The hospital wanted to send him home to his native Guatemala. Lawyers filed a suit on his behalf which the hospital won, but while the case was being appealed the hospital went ahead and deported him. The lawyers won the case on appeal but Jiménez was already in Guatemala where, after a brief stay in a local hospital, he was sent home to fend for himself. See the Luis Alberto Jimenez story here.

I understand that hospitals have financial concerns and that the cost of medical care in this country is outrageous. However, a hospital, by its very definition, is a place where people go when they need medical assistance. We as a society, have the responsibility to take care of our sick. Even the vilest of criminals in the penal system are afforded medical attention. There is something wrong with the system when the bottom line is more important than a human life. There should be no discrimination nor proof of residency nor proof of insurance status when it comes to providing health care. But for the accident of birth you or your loved one could be Francisco or Luis.

Then there is the US MNT beating Guatemala in Guatemala in a World Cup Qualifier. Yay!

Then I was at the game watching the Dynamo wipe the floor with Chivas. I actually felt sorry for Chivas; it was that ugly. With so many injuries (I think 11 players were on the injury list), plus Klejstan out with the US, there just wasn't much to be done. Preki only used one sub for injury purposes because frankly, there was no one on the bench. By no one, I mean no one healthy (Ante Razov was on the bench, and I don't consider him a "no one"). If you really love the Dynamo (and who wouldn't), or really hate Chivas (why?), then you might want to watch this game on TiVo if you missed it live.

Then there were like 80 (exaggerating, but not by much...) other World Cup qualifiers today. So I'm in OVERLOAD. A wonderful overload to be in, but overload nonetheless.

The United States recorded their first World Cup Qualifying victory in Guatemala on the backs of a 69th minute Carlos Bocanegra header.  Bocanegra guided in a corner kick from DaMarcus Beasley to give the United States the lead just minutes after both a Steve Cherundolo red card (second yellow) and a straight red to Guatemala D Gustavo Cabrera for a vicious diving elbow to the head of Eddie Lewis.  Although Guatemala would pressure American keeper Tim Howard the rest of the match, the USA managed to hang on for the first-leg victory.  The American players looked impacted by the hostile environment and jetlag from their international travels, often displaying poor touch and questionable passing (even stellar Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard's kicking was off).  Furthermore, the lack of a quality attacking option remains blatant.  Brian Ching holds up play well and is decent in the air, but Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey provided few threats to the Guatemala goal.

Overshadowing the actual soccer was the shamefully dirty play.  While most of the late shoving and desperate atttempts from the US were retaliatory, Guatemala did whatever they could to intimidate or flatout injure the American players.  Cabrera's flying elbow was simply the nadir of a display that included Carlos Ruiz kicking Tim Howard in the head, plenty of body checks and takedowns, a Guatemalan defender kicking at Carlos Bocanegra during his goal celebration and defender Yony Flores attempting to attack a US coach after the match.

Though I had heard about the hostility of Central American opponents, I had never seen the United States in a football streetfight until their match with Guatemala.  Poor CONCACAF officiating only compounded the needless aggression that Guatemala apparently felt they needed to utilize in order to have a chance against one of the federation's juggernauts.  While I had been thinking about how weak qualifying competition gave the United States a disadvantage once they reached large tournaments like the World Cup and Olympics, I now know that at the very least, the Red, White, and Blue are mentally prepared to take on all comers.

The bus journey here was fine except we got caught in our first proper rain. Our bags were on top of the bus and so got soaked. As did we when we had to change buses. Not fun. We've been staying in the Yellow House hostel in Antigua, clean and nice with free breakfast and internet. Yesterday lunch was bagels and tea in the Bagel Barn while watching the Pursuit of Happyness. Depressing film. Today we had a lazy morning and then this afternoon climbed Pacaya, the local volcano. Dave insisted on doing it even though he was hardly on top form. He managed well enough. Very warm at the top, and you can get quite up close and personal with the lava.

Tomorrow it's up early again to get a bus to Guatemala City and then onto El Salvador for our last night. I am going to miss Guatemala. I know some people wonder why the hell you'd come here, that it's dangerous and yadda yadda, but I haven't felt unsafe here. It's a beautiful country.

Cuando falta un día para que Rita Sanz-Agero inicie su participación en lo que serán sus primeros juegos olímpicos, en pentatlón moderno, su entrenador, Marian George ordeno concentración total y cero entrevistas para no perder la misma, por lo que la pentatlonista accedió a brindar una sesión de fotos a los reporteros gráficos que se reunieron con ella a la entrada de la villa olímpica.

Sin embargo, Rita no pudo resistir el encanto del periodista colombiano Pedro Arias de la cadena Radio 2K Plus Internacional que produce la Cabalgata Deportiva Gillette para Latinoamérica y Estados Unidos quien se apresuro a colocarle el micrófono y cuestionarla al ver que era objeto de decenas de flachazosara las fotografías y hasta su amiga, Tziana Prem saco una bandera china y le solicito un autógrafo.

Aunque Rita no dio detalles de su preparación y estrategia deportiva para lo que será su prueba de mañana, si respondió al entrevistador sudamericano sobre que "sentía mucho orgullo de representar a mi país para estos juegos y llena de satisfacción por la forma como me he preparado para ellos, estoy feliz y muy emocionada de saber que ya se acerca el día de competir y mostrar todo lo que he logrado", indico.

Rita salio a la cita con los fotógrafos acompañada de su señora madre, Isabel  Luna de Sanz-Agero y su amiga Tziana  quienes posaron con ella para las fotografías y manifestaron su "enorme alegría saber que Rita competirá en sus primeras olimpiadas y el poder estarla acompañando en esta importantísima etapa de su carrera deportiva porque es lograr un sueno", dijo la señora Luna.

A Rita le espera una jornada  muy cargada , la cual se inicia el viernes 22 de agosto desde las 09:00 horas cuando le toque  participar en las pruebas de Tiro en  Pistola de Aire 10 m y a las 12:50 las competencias de Esgrima, ambas pruebas en el Salón de Esgrima de Beijing.

A las 15:00 horas continuaran sus pruebas de natación 200 m estilo libre en el Yingdong Natatoium de Beijing, a las 19:00 seran las pruebas de salto en Ecuestres en el Olimpic Sport Center Stadium y a las 20:15 horas, en el mismo escenario, se realizara la prueba de 3,000 m pedestre para concluir con la premiación a las 20:40 en el mismo lugar.

Aunque el sentimiento de extrañar a la familia, la casa y los amigos esta latente en su mente, a Luis Garcia Bechinie las fuerzas no le han flaqueado y se mantiene firme en su propósito de mantener la concentración total en su preparación incluso, un día antes de competir en los 50 kilómetros de caminata que se realizaran este viernes 22 a partir de las 07:00 horas con salida y meta en el Estadio Nacional de Pekín y recorrido por las calles de la ciudad.

Bechinie estuvo junto a su entrenador Pedro Kim por 50 días entrenándose en Corea y llego a Pekín 4 días antes de la competencia "solo para esperar el disparo de salida y pidiéndole a dios que las cosas me salgan muy bien y espero que así sea"

Bechinie realizara hoy un entrenamiento en las canchas que están al rededor del estadio principal, donde saldrá Evelyn Nùñez a las 09:00 para su prueba de los 20km,  y  hará un reconocimiento del recorrido de la prueba.  Bechinie hará  5 kilómetros de entrenamiento con cambios de ritmo buscando que su cuerpo este listo para la prueba del día viernes.

"No buscamos mejorar las marcas, pero si mantener el ritmo.  Todos en base a la preparación manejaran ritmos conservadores, no habrá record del mundo ni olimpico, creo, pero es algo relativo no habrá buenos tiempos pero las posiciones se mantendrán", aseguro el marchista quien cumplirá con esta su cuarta participación olímpica y que llega con un tiempo de 4:01.36 con el cual clasifico en Rió 2007.

"Quiero volver a casa tranquilo y satisfecho, el hecho de estar acá es una alegría inmensa y un sueno mas cumplido que culminara cuando entre a la meta para luego pensar en volver a mi tierra que ya la extraño como dije antes pero no dejo que eso me perturbe", indico.

El quetzalteco lucirá mañana el suéter líder en la prueba de ruta que arrancará a las 9:00 horas en Escuintla y que llevará a los participantes a rodar un total de 96 kilómetros entre el punto de salida hacia autosafari, retorno a Escuintla y el ascenso que concluye en el autódromo Los Volcanes en la ruta hacia Acatenango.

Las prueba reune a los equipos de Jalapa Cobán, Chimaltenango Café Quetzal, Coca Cola, Bike´s Center Australian, Asociación de Quetzaltenango, Asociación de Sololá y Cable DX Decorabaños para un total de 36 atletas del ciclismo quienes al concluir la vuelta sub 23 totalizarán 444 kilómetros de recorrido.

El evento incluye además, las siguientes pruebas:

·  jueves 21, ruta de 96 kilómetros comprendida entre Escuintla - Auto Safari - retorno a  Escuintla - meta enfrente del autódromo Los Volcanes en la cinta asfáltica hacia Alotenango, desde las 9:00 horas.

·  viernes 22, circuito en San Lucas Sacatepequez - Chimaltenango - San Lucas Sacatepequez, tres vueltas para un total de 132 kilòmetros, arranca a las 9:00 horas.

·  sábado 23, ruta de 105 kilòmetros que iniciará en la Plaza Confucio en la zona 15 hacia El Cerinal, kilómetro 25, retorno a la entrada a Santa Elena Barillas, meta en la entrada a Fraijanes, inicia a las 9:00 horas

·  domingo 24, circuito Boza Reyes, tres vueltas en las cercanías de Ciudad Vieja, Sacatepequez, luego el pelotón se dirigirá hacia el mojon del kilómetro 61 en dirección hacia la ruta inter americana, salen a las 9.00 horas.

it was an amzing trip, and i'll be getting drunk at various venues in chicago this week, telling stories. but for now, i leave you with two things:

thing 1: i recommend getting into the Reggaeton scene a little and seeing what it's about. specifically, i recommend Calle 13

thing 2: lo siento, no entiendo means "i'm sorry, i don't understand", which is something i said often on the trip. because my spanish is terrible. :)

La experiencia y el imponer una nueva marca nacional en su categoria, fueron los dos grandes logros que Beijin 2008 le dejo a Crhistian Lopez, quien concluyo su participacion en el puesto 8 del Grupo B y en el 17 en la general en la categoria hasta 105 kilogramos en la disciplina de la halterofilia. 

"Es una competencia muy importante  que me deja mucha experiencia y mucho conocimiento para futuras participaciones, por lo cual espero tomar todo lo positivo de esta  para mejorar mis resultados, gracias al cielo en la modalidad de envion pude imponer una nueva marca y eso es lo mejor que me dejan estos juegos", indico Crhistian quien hizo 150 en arranque y 186 en envion para totalizar 336 kilos en esta prueba.

La marca que desde hacia dos anos poseia Lopez  era de 185 en envion y  en China logro subirla a 186 por lo que para el atleta esto implica un peldano mas en su carrera la cual, con 21 anos de edad, aun le depara mucho porvenir.

Y el atleta nacional lo tiene claro pues "ahora esto se convierte para mi en el punto de partida para motivarme y pensar en el  proximo ciclo olimpico que para mi empieza ahora mismo aqui en Beijin, es mi proposito al participar y aprovechar la invitacion que recibi para estar en estas olimpiadas" concluyo el atleta.

Andrei Aramnau de Belorusia gano el oro en esta categoria al sumar 200+236=436, la plata se la adjudico el ruso Dmitriy Klokov con 193+230=423 al igual que el oro que lo gano otro ruso, Dmitry Lapikov con 190+230=420 kilos.

Last night I got snubbed by another girl here, about my age.  I can´t begin to explain how much it hurt my feelings - certainly more than it should have.  As this is my first time traveling alone since my marriage and the birth of my daughter I have discovered the following truths.

Certain people are turned off by the fact that I am married, and have a child.  Mostly these are people my age, and fellow travelers, and from the US, Canada, Australia, or Europe. 

Being a mother puts me on an entire different level with the inhabitants of the places I visit.  Motherhood is possibly the most binding commonality to share with another.  It is primal.  It is beautiful.  It crosses cultures and continents and can be understood in any language.  When the women here find out I have a child, and they do too, there is an immediate understanding, a look.  Today a woman who I have never seen asked how my baby was.  A Guatemalan woman.  One I might never have met had I not been a mother. Her twelve year old daughter´s name is Luz.

The Maya peoples (of Mexico) apparently drank chocolate drinks in their marriage and engagement ceremonies. According to Michael Coe, co-author of The True History of Chocolate, "Chocolate drinks occupied the same nice as expensive French champagne does in our own culture." What people did at such ceremonies was to "chokola'j," or to "drink chocolate together." To me, it looks like this is where our present word "chocolate" came from.

El primer sencillo de su nuevo CD "One Life to Love" ya ha sido uno de los sencillos más añadido a Christian AC desde su lanzamiento, “One Life to Love” es ahora N º 25 en el R&R AC-Monitored y es actualmente N º 18 en AC-Indicator. “One Life to Love” también tuvo éxito en iTunes para llegar a la posición N º 25 en la categoría de Christian & Gospel Top Song en solamente un par de días."También se remonta al significado detrás de 33Miles, la idea de que la vida puede ser corta, que Jesús vivió sólo treinta y tres años en esta tierra. Así que la pregunta sigue siendo: ¿Qué vamos hacer tu y yo con nuestras millas, con las que nos faltan por recorrer?" Visita a Guatemala

Barton, Lockwood y Stoddard visitaron Guatemala en solidaridad con la fundación "Food for the Hungry."

"El pueblo de Guatemala regresó nuestro servicio de una forma que no sabía que existía", recuerda Collin Stoddard después de su viaje a Guatemala con Food for the Hungry. Luego llego otro técnico que no hizo nada, ni entro a mi casa y dijo que el problema no era ahí sino en troncales, al fin a finales de Junio que para esto ya llevaba casi un mes sin internet llegó un técnico de la nada entro a mi casa reviso el modem, lo probò con otro que no era igual al que yo tengo y dijo que el modem no servía que tenia que comprar otro por $50.

Eso fue sábado, para esto ya estabamos en Julio, a la siguiente semana fui a una agencia Telgua a fin de adquirir el modem, pero me dijeron que tenia que pagar el mes de Junio sino no podian atenderme y que se tardaban de 4 a 6 semanas en llegar a instalarmelo (conectar a la corriente y conectar el cable coaxial).

Me enojé tanto que no pagué nada, hoy 31 de Julio llamé para ver como estaba el asunto de nuevo, me dijeron que el modem me lo llevaban en 4 semanas, el costo lo agregaban a mi siguiente factura y que solo tenia que pagar Julio que me trasfería para que lo pagara por teléfono y que luego volviera a llamar para hacerme la orden del nuevo modem.

Como estaba de buen humor pagué por teléfono los Q483 y luego volvi a llamar, pero me respondieron que no, que el trámite para el nuevo modem lo tenia que ir a hacer personalmente a la agencia tívoli de telgua y que lo tenía que pagar de una vez.

Pedí que me revisaran porque se había cerrado la orden anterior y la respuesta fue que el técnico dijo que ya estaba reparado y cerraron la orden.

Martes 19 de Agosto, Hoy por poco escupo el hígado, hoy llegó otro técnico a mi casa y dice que todo está bien llamó a no se quien y el problema es que supuestamente estoy en mora, cuando yo llamé mis facturas y pagos están completamente al día... ya no se que hacer, que bueno que no compré el modem.

Ya meti mi queja a la DIACO hoy 20 de agosto con el número 2809-2008, a ver como me va...
