Everything seems to work smoothly, except:

The touchpad mouse behaves like a crazy, sometimes it gets stuck at the bottom of the screen, sometimes it jumps randomly, sometimes you need more that 50 movements to cross the screen from corner to corner. It's some kind of incompatibility with a Dell BIOS update. Solution: Add i8042.nomux=1 to the kernel options in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Second thing: the wi-fi, the BCM4310 USB card is not automatically recognized. Solution: Download ndiswrapper (this, this and this, you may need another computer with Internet connection, ehem) and configure it with the drivers you can get here.

Drop me a comment if you need more info on any of these, enjoy your Dell.

Il poter visualizzare, salvare e utilizzare le emoticon;

la configurazione stabile del carattere di scrittura;

La semplicità nell'uso;

Le diverse e utili estensioni;

Un estensione uguale a live plus che permette l'interpretazione dei nickname colorati attraverso i tag del plus;

La leggerezza del programma, che non rallenta i processi attivi nel computer;

Ubuntu - worlds most famous Linux distribution has really taken the world by storm, not only it is a strong competitor for Windowzzzzz, but the support it has is also quite large.

Ubuntu comes by default with Firefox pre-installed, though firefox has it`s part of share in Browser world we can`t deny the features Opera has to offer.Firefox is best in it`s class and is regarded as the best browser by some, but we are talking about opera this time. Recently opera released "Opera 9.6" for Linux.

It has great new features and I would recommend that it`s a good alternative to Firefox in Linux World.

You can download opera from here.

Both are same on performance front and both have their own set of features. But Opera besides being just plain faster, it adds feature improvements all around, like a new low-bandwidth mode in the built-in email client, expanded syncing (speed dial, search engines and notes), and RSS feed previews.

GIMP 2.6 hasn't been ported on Ubuntu 8.04's repo. No worries my friend. Here is a simple tip on how to get GIMP 2.6 rock n' roll and running on your Hardy Heronish OS.

STEP I - Let's get the latest GIMP 2.6 deb files at Getdeb.net.

The below trick/tip is an original post of xubuntu.wordpress.com (Howto: Access GetDeb.net packages through Apt-get/Synaptic)

(1) Open up a terminal ( ALT + F2 then type gnome-terminal ) and key in this command:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

(2) Put in the following on the last line at the end of the file:

deb http://ubuntu.org.ua/ getdeb/

Save the file and exit.

(3) Now run the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get update

STEP II - It's time to get GIMP 2.6

(4) Still in the terminal? Type this command:

sudo apt-get install gimp

This will update your GIMP 2.4 to GIMP 2.6.

STEP III - (Optional) Let's remove the Getdeb.net repo

We added the Getdeb.net's repository at sources.list so take note that it's not an Ubuntu official repository. The tendency for this is, when we apt-get update or apt-get upgrade later on or in the the future, Getdeb's sources may jumble with Ubuntu's sources. You may encounter some problem with that so let's remove Getdeb's repo since we already get GIMP 2.6 running with all it's depencies.

(5) Open up a terminal ( ALT + F2 then type gnome-terminal ) and key in this command:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

(6) On the last line, remove / delete the following:

deb http://ubuntu.org.ua/ getdeb/

Save the file and exit.

(7) Now re-run the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Hooray! You have GIMP 2.6 running on Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron with no hassle.

Seperti yang aing omongin diatas.., berhubung Ubuntu bakal merilis versi barunya, mending tunggu ajalah "wong cuma tinggal 25 hari ini". Sekalian Reponya juga :D. Karena aing mau install ulang OS aing karena dah banyak yg gak jelas isinya, maklumlah namanya juga pemula disini jadi banyak direktori gak jelas akibat banyak coba-coba :D

/home/name/.mozilla vom Backup kopieren

CPU-Skalierung aktivieren (Guide):

CPU Type herausfinden:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

liefert: model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
passendes Modul checken:

sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino

sudo modprobe acpi-cpufreq

Scaling Modules dazu:

sudo modprobe cpufreq_conservative
sudo modprobe cpufreq_ondemand
sudo modprobe cpufreq_powersave
sudo modprobe cpufreq_stats
sudo modprobe cpufreq_userspace

Die verfügbaren Governors anzeigen:

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors

ergibt dann: ondemand userspace powersave conservative performance

Module beim Start laden:hinzufügen in /etc/modules :

sudo gedit /etc/modules

acpi-cpufreq
cpufreq_conservative
cpufreq_ondemand
cpufreq_powersave
cpufreq_stats
cpufreq_userspace

Utilities laden:

sudo apt-get install cpufrequtils

Testen:

cpufreq-info

powersave.sh:
#!/bin/bash
cpufreq-set -c 1 -g powersave
cpufreq-set -c 0 -g powersave
conservative.sh:
#!/bin/bash
cpufreq-set -c 1 -g conservative
cpufreq-set -c 0 -g conservative

Standard Governor definieren (Guide):

gconf-editor

ausführen, dann: -> apps, gnome-power-management, cpufreq.
Schlüssel für policy_ac und policy_battery auf powersave ändern

Funktionstaste für Touchpad enable/disable belegen (Guide):

Backup der xorg.conf anlegen:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad" "SendCoreEvents"
in Sektion "InputDevice" von "Synaptics Touchpad":
Option "SHMConfig" "on"

Grafiktreiberinstallation

Dafür wähle ich das Tool "Envy":

sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk

glxinfo

Desktopeffekte nach Bedarf aktivieren: System -> Einstellungen -> Erscheinungsbild

Installation der Multimedia Komponenten via Medibuntu:

Kommandozeile:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install w32codecs

sudo apt-get install nfs-common

mounten:

Java installieren (Guide):

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre

Lizenzvereinbarung annehmen

sudo update-alternatives --config java

VirtualBox installieren (Guide):

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose virtualbox-ose-modules-`uname -r`
sudo adduser $USER vboxusers

Installation Mediaplayer:

sudo apt-get install mplayer mozilla-mplayer smplayer

Check

sudo apt-get install vlc

Einstellungen vom Backup in /home/.vlc kopieren.

Thunderbird installieren:

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

Vom Backup /home/name/.mozilla-thunderbird kopieren (Maildateien).

Gnome Commander:

sudo apt-get install gnome-commander

Einstellungen vom Backup nach /home/name/.gnome-commander kopieren.

Putty:

sudo apt-get install putty

Amarok:

sudo apt-get install amarok

Wine:

sudo apt-get install wine

Azureus:

sudo apt-get install azureus

last.fm:

sudo apt-get install lastfm

# kopt=root=UUID=45ad37fa-386e-4ff0-be33-d4465e05c096 ro

deve diventare così:

# kopt=root=UUID=45ad37fa-386e-4ff0-be33-d4465e05c096 ro combined_mode=libata

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Listo.

The happy news is I bought a new laptop. It is a Compaq c797, Intel Dual core 2Ghz, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 160 GB Hard-disc, with FREEDOM (who needs Windows anyway). I have installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron in it and named him r0n. :-)

Yesterday I gave him a mac look. This is how I did it.

Step (1) Enable desktop effects

System --> Preferences--> Visual Effects --> Extra

Step (2) Install Avant Window Manager

Either through Synaptic package manager or issue this command in terminal

sudo apt-get install avant-window-manager

Install the dependencies too.

Step (3) Open Avant Window Navigator

Applications-->Accessories-->Avant Window Navigator

And a small task bar will appear at bottom of your screen. Delete the "stock" task bar which comes by default.

Step (4) Add icons to your new bar

Drag frequently used programs from the menu into this new bar. You can change the order of the icons from Avant window manager.

System --> Preferences --> Awn Manager

Step (5) Start Avant Window Navigator with GNU/Linux

Check this link.

Step (6) Customize your bar.

You can play with the options (add animation, transparency etc)in Awn manager. Install themes from this link. There are more plugins are launchers for Avant window manager. Unfortunately nothing worked for me in my Ubuntu system.

That's it.... and in the end, you will get something like this...

r0n rox....

GNU/Linux rules....

Here's a quick howto on using your Google Calendar with Lightning when you're at home, with all edits being synced, no matter if done online or with Lightning.

We're using the recent 0.9 Version of the Lightning extension for Thunderbird. You need to download the 64bit extension manually. The direct download on the Mozilla homepage will only give you the 32bit version. You can find it here: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/calendar/lightning/releases/ under 0.9/contrib/linux-x86_64/

After that grab the Google Calendar addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/sunbird/addon/4631

After installing both of them, you should be able to set up a: new calender -> on the network -> Google Calendar. Post your XML address in the field, enter your password and you're ready for bidirectional editing.

A pictured howto can be found here: http://bfish.xaedalus.net/?p=239 the wiki is here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Calendar:GDATA_Provider#Accessing_your_Calendar

Two things to mention:

make sure to use the recent addons, which is a bit of manual work, but otherise the field for the Google Calendar will not show up or may not sync.

make sure to use the remote caledar when adding entries and not the local one which was set up by default (you can delete it if you don't need it to avoid confusion)

sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/es_XX

sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/es_MX

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kwwii/ubuntu hardy main

Luego escribe en el terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install community-themes

sudo fdisk -l | grep NTFS

Se la partizione è FAT32,digitare:

sudo fdisk -l

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

e aggiungiamo questa riga:

UUID=stringa_ottenuta /media/c ntfs

Documents and Settings/vostro_nome_utente/Dati Applicazioni/Thunderbird/Profiles/a1b2c3d4.default

Once again I've installed Ubuntu, I believe it's 8.04, via the Wubi install tool (which is great if you haven't tried it)

I've realized that Ubuntu is just what I've been wanting - reasons follow:

-No Wireless connection: My Dell Laptop is very stubborn about using wireless with Ubuntu. This is great because I have no choice but to write., no f*ing around online

-Dual boot with WinXP: Because of this I spend less time getting everything I want/need to work in an OS. Since I run Win and Ubuntu, the media experience I expect from a PC can be handled by Win and the write till I drop can be handled in Ubuntu with one application.
