Dear Friends,

A week after our Ste. Victoire adventure, I was fortunate to bring my children and husband to another favorite peak of my past--La Tournette, in Haute Savoie, France.

I had discovered this corner of France 15 years earlier when David Parry, ATA's chairman, and I conducted R+D for a hiking tour I had designed for the Smithsonian. Few foreign travelers visiting France head to this region, nestled below Lake Geneva. Few French who are not Savoyard venture into Savoie. (My sister, who has lived in Provence most of her life, has never been nor even considered it!)

[caption id="attachment_47" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Talloires Bay"][/caption]

And yet there lies this turquoise jewel of a lake, the Lac d'Annecy, touted as the cleanest in Europe, set amid ridges and peaks, high verdant pastures, and ringed by inviting towns like Annecy, Talloires, Duingt, Menthon St Bernard, and more. The tableau created by this Tahitian-blue lake, its mountains and low lying, fast-moving cotton clouds evokes the South Pacific, not the Alps.

Turning our attention to La Tournette (or, as my son dubbed it, after our expedition--the "Never Retournette"), I did little to prepare my husband and two children for the rigors of the hike, knowing that the rewards would be great and seeing little value in discouraging them beforehand. A locally produced hiking guide rated it "pour randonneurs experimentes" (for experienced hikers) and my troops had only done Sainte Victoire. I am a firm believer in pushing the limits of what one thinks one can do. So all I said was, "This is a great 6-hour hike--you'll all love it!"

La Tournette is a peak on the east side of the Lac d'Annecy, sitting high above the gorgeous lake. Towards the center of the peak, a rocky outcropping takes the form of a giant armchair ("le fauteuil")--that is our lofty 2,300-meter goal.

[caption id="attachment_48" align="alignright" width="225" caption="View of La Tournette"][/caption]

After a winding drive up from Talloires, we reach the Col de la Forclaz, one of the main launch points for the avid paragliders that fill the skies above the peaks and the lake. Not far from here, we take a sharp left on to small country road and pass a chalet restaurant. Some hardy hikers disembark their cars here, adding another 40 minutes to their hike. I assure my crew that I am sparing them the extra steps and hit the dirt road that leads onward in our awful rental (a Citroen Picasso) to bump our way up the mountain to the Chalet de l'Aulps.

The Chalet is a cheese farm cum restaurant/bar on a piece of land that brings memories of the Sound of Music rushing to the fore. Walking past the barns, cheese-making rooms, restaurant and terrace, you find yourself standing in a green open pasture that juts out like the bow of a ship over the valley below. To the north are the Dents de Lanfon, jagged stone teeth that form a surreal frame to this idyllic scene. To the south are sloping fields full of wildflowers and moseying cows whose imposing bells resonate with a pleasing cacophony across the landscape.

I can tell from my children's faces that they are already impressed. My son Nick was the first to walk out as far he could to the edge to view the scene below. He notes how high we are, and I refrain from pointing out how much higher we have to go.

We watch a group of fellow hikers start up the path. They have brought their silky-haired dog with them, and he lunges ahead with an ease that would make any human jealous.

Our turn: we begin our ascent. It's 9:45am. The morning and altitude bring us cool, sweet air. Perfect weather for a hike. The path is a trench dug out of the pasture, with thick tufts of grass lining both sides and occasionally forming islands in the middle. The pitch is steep and the path is straight. We can see the hikers in front of us disappearing as they make seemingly easy progress upward.

After an hour and a half, the path has changed, and we have begun to climb wide, dirt paths filled with loose rocks that make us skid downward every once in a while. After a few long switchbacks, we come around a corner to behold a surreal landscape. A small valley is home to the Refuge de la Tournette where hikers can enjoy a refreshing "panache" (sparkling lemonade and beer) while taking in glorious views. Behind it lies a scattering of huge, truck-size boulders strewn across a meadow where some goats bleat in the distance. As a backdrop, an imposing wall of sheer cliffs isolate the scene, making it look eerily like a stage set. As we wind our way down and through this secluded vale at a happy pace, we note a large patch of white.

[caption id="attachment_46" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Nick & Sasha in mini-glacier"][/caption]

My children speed up--snow in summer! Their delight doubles when they discover it's a mini-glacier that one can actually enter as a cave. The refrigerator effect on the inside is a hit after our climb, and the oddly shaped roof (as if a giant melon baller had scooped out chunks) makes the experience particulalry "awesome," in the words of my daughter.

The hike continues, and the vistas and altitude do not fail to stun each one of us. The terrain becomes a little tricky in parts: narrow, rocky paths with sheer drops to the right; a huge steep slope of slushy, slippery snow that makes it hard to avoid hurtling downward; some rock climbing portions where loose stones pose a threat to those following too closely and more.

I knew we may be in jeopardy of not making it to the top when my daughter, who is a hearty soul, started trembling and shielding her eyes with her hand on the drop side of the mountain. Finally, she uttered shakily "I think I am going to die," bringing our progress to a halt.

We took a rest, assuring her we could turn down. She looked to her father for guidance. He smiled and said encouragingly "I think we can do it, Sasha." That's all she needed. Up she got and onward we went.

[caption id="attachment_49" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Sasha's close-up of a chamois"][/caption]

Soon we were in chamoix country--where delightful mountain goats prance gracefully across vertical slopes and rocky voids. This is their territory, but they share it willingly, coming rather close to hikers. We picked a spot surrounded by the chamois in a field of "trolles d'Europe" (golden globe like wildflowers) for a picnic of jambon beurre sandwiches.

Looking up from our picnic site, my son Nick noted how unattainably high and far the "armchair" seemed. I reassured him that the hike really became fun now...

Sure enough, we embarked on a hike dominated by basic rock climbing, aided by chains and ladders nailed into the rock. The variety of challenges made this more of a game, so we all tapped into new energy and pushed upward.

Along the way, a hearty French "montagnard" descending the mountain stopped to address my daughter. He said he was proud of her for attempting the climb and spoke of the rewards ahead--the views of the Aravis chain, of Mont Blanc and even of Lake Geneva in the distance. Sasha smiled politely but clearly wanted to move on.

Finally, we reach the last leg of the journey--the base of the armchair. The children are delighted they've made it. We skirt a bank of snow and ice and some boulders and find ourselves in front of the final ladders. My daughter is reading one of three plaques on the back side of the gargantuan boulder that forms the "armchair." Her eyes widen. She turns to me with a swish of her red-haired pony tail: "Mommy, someone DIED here?!" Well, yes, I confirm, "but they came here in March, which is really not smart." Sasha points to the other plaque--"That person died in July!" Touche. I re-direct her and the gang to the ladders.

Up we go, and within minutes we are standing at 2300 meters, sitting in the grandest armchair of our lives. We head toward the cross and have to excuse ourselves as we pass across the picnic spread set out by a family with three children (there is limited room on this high armchair).. Stuart whispers to me "Did you notice--they roped their kids together?!" I shrug the comment off. I pointed out there had been a couple of young children coming down the mountain who were not attached to their parents.

[caption id="attachment_54" align="alignright" width="300" caption="View of Lac d'Annecy from atop La Tournette"][/caption]

We breathed in the fresh air, soaked in the tininess of our once-extensive lake of Annecy, observed the insanity of the para-gliders filling the afternoon skies, and captured the majesty of Mont Blanc on our digital camera. We basked in our accomplishment.

The descent was speedy--a little too speedy at times, as scree created a conveyor belt of pebbles that carried us down several feet at a time. But euphoria had set in after five hours, and we felt like flying! So we did.

Only once did my heart stop, as I led the pack down and heard Sasha scream "Mommy!" behind me. I could hear the movement of rock and turned, fulling expecting a boulder to be coming my way. I felt something brush past my hair and looked upward to catch glimpse of a hoof. I had startled a chamoix who had been sleeping on a ledge to my left. He'd bolted up and over me, barely missing my head, and had landed on an outcropping to our right. He was trembling with fear and immediatley proceeded to empty his bowels, much to the delight of my son who announced I had scared the poop out of the poor creature.

We returned to the Reblochon cheese farm at the base of La Tournette and bought ice cream to reward our efforts and celebrate the day. As we passed the display of massive decorative cow bells on their studded leather belts, my husband resolved to possess one as a trophy for our ascent to la Tournette's grand armchair.

A better cure for bitterness than chocolate is to run until you drop. Well, not in my case but, yeah

A better cure for bitterness than chocolate is to run until you drop. Well, not in my case but, yeah - run a lot. Skis are back in the ski locker, and it's time to do the clothing exchange of winter for summer stuff in the drawers and wardrobe. So for 2 weeks I've been running again - suddenly gone from 0 to 60 on the running thing now that the lifts are shut and the envie for ski touring has gone out of my system, with the arrival of green leaves on the trees and tulips and forsythias blooming around us.

Last Saturday started with my first official run of the season (I ran a few times over the winter with the dogs, but mostly in hiking boots and totally unplanned - last official run was Dec 18 in Val Ferret during the 21km snow race put on by the Trailers de Courmayeur) . So I did one of those annoying bleep tests to test V02 max, and I guess winter ski randonèes and ski mountaineering at altitude worked because I scored higher on my V02 max at the start of this season than I did at the end of last - 9.1 shuttles followed by a 40 minute jog on a fairly flat area. I thought I'd done worse than on previous tests, but when I looked at actual records - 43.43 V02 max on sites I found with Google, this puts me in the 'superior' catagory for women, even if I was 13 years old, which is nice to know. However, it only puts me in the 'good' catagory for men of my age - apparently there is a huge sex difference in V02 max capacities.

I followed that by running from Chamonix to Argentière and back (16-17km with about 450m uphill), walking the uphills, via Lavancher as my first 'long slow run' of the season. It's the earliest in the season I've done a run that long, and it did take 3 hours 16 minutes (but that was with breaks for meeting 4 friends on the trails on the way up and back). Felt quite good that I could manage it for my 2nd run of the season, especially as I'd done the first run only the day before. Took the dogs for their first long run of the season as well - was a bit of a shock to their systems I think and one threw up his breakfast when we got back to the car while I was stretching in the grass -- so today when we went again they had a big dinner the night before and no breakfast and they did better. It was also cooler today - misty and rainy, which I am sure helped.

Also last Wed eve I attended a Chamonix Mont Blanc Marathon club training (first time I've been able to arrange my schedule to join the CMBM training sessions) - 1 hour of trail running with 45 mintues of it as hill efforts, followed by a BBQ. There were about 30 pretty fit looking people out for the training and since we were on a loop I have no idea where I fit in exactly. I was lapped by about 4 or 5 guys who were super fit, and 1 girl - so hopefully didn't do too badly. But it felt really hard - the effort bit was running down a long hill, down past 2 flags, up 1, down 2 more flags, up 1 - so you constantly were turning and sprinting uphill. Very tiring. Did another training session on Saturday - fast 1 hour run to Vaudagne with a fast downhill and some trails some road - felt very strong. Followed the very next day (today) by a 2nd run to Argentière. I accidentally took the higher trail up to Lavancher so did a bit more height than last week anyhow, and in general it was a faster pace with less rests - about 2.5 hours, so probably yes, a bit faster overall than the previous Saturday but I did start closer to the Flegère rather than town center which probably saved 15 minutes overall. I also didn't run into any friends today, since it was rainy.

Next week's goal for the long run is to go to Le Tour (about 23km round trip) ... want to try something a bit longer. Or to start maybe at the Grandes Montets or Lavancher and go past Le Tour and climb up the Charamillion lift line to get in some height gain. Then possibly to do an overall uphill race next Sunday in Sallanches - 12km with 1100m height gain to push the hill work and pace a bit since it seems the distance should be within my grasp already. You can sign up on the day of (it's a small race) so I will leave the decision until le dernière moment since we will have visitors in for a week when that race happens.

Can't decide yet whether to go for the Cross du Mont Blanc or the Mont Blanc Marathon on the 28th and 29th of June ... will see how I feel after the run to Le Tour next week. But so far am pretty pleased that I have had a strong start to my running, and not lost as much running fitness over this winter as feared.

Within the ambience of a luxurious country house, guests of Le Saint Joseph have four-star luxury service at their disposal every moment of the day. Its eleven rooms and three apartments each have their own individual style, with fabrics, paintings and antiques that have been hand-picked from the best of Paris, Lyon and Naples.

Guests seeking a cozy and relaxed atmosphere might prefer the rooms “under the roofs” which have an atmosphere reminiscent of a family home and bathrooms in “the old style”. Its shimmering red and gold fabrics harmonize perfectly with its super soft sofas, an immense canopied bed and polished floors. For large groups, two duplex apartments are available, with four bedrooms each, as well as saunas, Jacuzzis and private entrance and exit direct to the street.

Guests looking for a change from the traditional can try the hotel’s second restaurant, The Grand Café, featuring exceptional Thai Cuisine, before heading back out to the hustle and bustle of Courchevel, is a dream. For those seeking the good life, Le Chabichou is the place to stay. Just a stone’s throw from the ski runs, its wooden gingerbread décor give it a homey, intimate ambience, but there is no denying that this is a luxury hotel. It’s a true ski-in/ski-out hotel and passes, skis and boards can be purchased or rented directly from the concierge.

Along with its superb location, charm, and comfort, the shining beacon of this hotel is Michel Rochedy’s two-Michelin-star restaurant which offers the best of traditional Savoyard cuisine with just a pinch of the exotic. For those who want to make their gustatory experience just a little more unforgettable, Rochedy offers cooking classes every Thursday morning.

For those who want to be at the center of it all, there’s no better hotel than Le Lana. Established in 1958, it was the first hotel built specifically for the Courchevel resort. Today it is a 4-star luxury hotel with direct access to the slopes. With a terrific central location, it is the ideal accommodation for the winter sports enthusiast or for those hoping to explore the town (and shops) of Courchevel. Its 57 rooms have views of snow covered mountains. Each of the hotel’s luxurious 19 suites includes a jacuzzi (essential after a hard day on the mountain) and a view of the slopes. With a location this good, families can rest assured that everyone will be on time for dinner watching them coast down the mountain at the end of the day. And dinner at the gourmet Saint Nicolas is definitely not to be missed. In a land where one can easily ski 60 miles in one day, comfort is key and the onsite Spa Lana offers every service necessary to soothe your body and mind and get you ready for the next day.

By Jessamyn Embry

Imagine standing on an alpine peak with Italy to your left, Switzerland to your right and 385 miles of skiing heaven laid out beneath you. With over 185 lifts in a network of trails three times larger than the biggest American resorts, it’s easy to see why Courchevel is considered the premiere winter resort of Europe… if not the world.

With that much territory to offer, it doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie or a double-diamond pro. There’s plenty of room for everyone and plenty of assistance too. Courchevel is home to Europe’s biggest ski school with 500 instructors and mountain guides ready to show you the slopes. On a routine day you can ski or board down one mountain, cruise down a second (stopping for lunch on the sundeck of an on-mountain restaurant) and coast contentedly down a third.
But the charm of the Three Valleys doesn’t end on the slopes. It was, after all, the French who invented après-ski and in the Alps eating is as important as skiing. For the gourmand, there is the 2-star Michelin restaurant, Le Chabichou as well as a host of exceptional traditional Savoyard restaurants. After dinner enjoy a stroll past the skating rink, see what’s playing at the resort’s three cinemas, or buy a little something special at one of the 150 shops that call Courchevel home. When the living is this good, you’ll want to call it home too.

This is a beautiful two day hike from near the town of Sixt Fer a Cheval (near Morzine and not far from Chamonix) best suited for strong hikers.

The first night was a relatively short ascent with 1050m of height gain to a mountain hut above Sixt at 1950m altitude where we enjoyed a lovely meal and warm beds.

The second day is the longest and started with breakfast at the hut, and was 1140m of height gain, with large amounts of ridge traversing and beautiful vistas across the Cirque des Fonts. We had lunch on Mt Buet and then started our return journey with 2200m of height loss.

Cirque des Fonts, originally uploaded to Flickr.

This year we went in mid-September and the scenery and tree foliage was amazing with bright blue crystal clear skies, and the route was not crowded. There were a few late blooming alpine flowers on view, and we also managed to see a family of ibex. There is a bit of an airy scramble using chains to ascend the ridge-line to the summit of Mt Buet, which is 3096m (sometimes also quoted as 3098, 3099 or 3100m) in altitude. The route also gave us an opportunity to view first-hand the effects of global warming, as several of the nearby smaller glaciers marked on the map were already gone or disappearing.

Descent was by a completely different route which loops back to the car park, and has many long downhills, and chances to view ibex perched in the rocks as we descended Mt Buet. From the summit of Mt Buet there were beautiful views for 360 degrees.

This route is often done for acclimatisation before climbing Mont Blanc, as part of other multi-day tours in the region or is easily enjoyed as a two day hike in its own right, especially when done from this side of the mountain.
