This morning the worms had all gone and some of the cat food too. I've been up in the loft and found the heat mat I used to use when i made wine. So that is under the cat box which will save me changing hot water bottles all the time and disturbing him when he's sleeping. I also found some shredded paper so he can make himself a little nest.

I'm still unsure whether I should take him to the vet. He seems so much better than he did, that I wonder if he was just cold and hungry, and good meals and some rest will do the job. Provided he pulls through, I will keep him until he's increased his weight to 400g or so, which should only take a month or thereabouts. He will then be fat enough to hibernate and I'll let him go back into the wild. It's always good to have a hedgehog or two in the garden, although I have so many enormous slugs that it would take a squadron of hedgehogs to eat them all.

I've got to go to work in an hour. I hate late shifts. I find I can't sleep in, so I end up waking up at the normal time anyway, then I can't relax or get into anything, so I'm just hanging round all morning waiting to go to work. Then I'm tired mid afternoon because I've got up early and can't have my usual power nap. I only do them to cover when somebody else is off, but I've got 2 this week and 2 next week. Tomorrow I have the orthodontist and Wednesday is therapy. I was also due to go to the optician tomorrow to get my contact lens prescription verified (I've been trialling lenses for a couple of weeks) but I postponed it till Friday. I made this cute little hedgehog for my sister; she requested cute little buddy friends to sit at her desk with her while she worked.  I think I'll also make her a turtle since I finally bought some more green yarn.  I think he looks like a Hugo - what do you think?  (Have you notice that I like to name things?)

I did want to share that I got the little hedgie zipper pouch put together this morning before my sewing room turned into an oven.  Here it is:

Pretty cute, eh?  It's listed for tomorrow night's stocking at Beautiful Enchantments. 

For the next few days, I'm working on a lovely dress for the daughter of a friend.  It's a full length, long sleeve, fitted bodice dress that is meant to resemble those of the late 1800's.  The pattern is for a more colonial style, so I'm altering here and there.  It won't be "period accurate", but it will be perfect for what she wants to wear it to...a local historical site.  This is the first time I've attempted a dress like this and the young lady is away camping until the day before she wants it, so it's going to be a challenge...but I'm up for it!

Besides the dress, I have orders for three Mix It Up aprons, pants and a skirt for another customer and Retro Femme stocks on Friday, so it will be a busy week!

1.45am (way past my bedtime!) saw me walking slowly through the pasture with a dim torch. And there, snuffling around in the grass, was one of the adult badgers!

It didn't seem too bothered by the torchlight, but carried on snuffling contentedly. I watched it for about five minutes and then left it to get on with its dinner. I was happy to have seen a badger in its own element, and proved that this method of watching them was possible. I may well stay up late on the next full moon and try this again.

Finally, an answer to those readers who think there should be more hedgehogs on this site (you know who you are!). Folk wisdom says that where there are badgers there are not usually many hedgehogs, presumably because one eats the other. I don't know if that's true, but I haven't seen many hedgehogs around here.

So, especially for you, here's a picture of an urchin that was feeding contentedly on the village green when I walked past. By the time I'd gone home and got the camera he was sitting in the middle of the road, which says a lot about hedgehogs.

I did try and pick him up and move him off the road, but I found out that the spines on a hedgehog are not just there for show - they really are sharp and spiky! This may sound obvious, but I'd never tried to pick up a hedgehog before. I did manage to move him to the side of the road, and left him there out of harm's way, spiny and verminous, but safe.

• Hedgehogs don't see very well, so they sniff and taste everything! If I can manage to get a picture of her tongue I will. It's really long!
• Hedgehogs can eat anything they want. There are no foods that they are allergic to. For instance, they can eat chocolate, onions, macaroni and cheese, whatever they will eat. Most of the time they should be fed high quality cat food supplemented by bugs, fruits, meat and anything else they will eat. Since Penny is only 12 weeks old, she's eating moist kitten food, chicken, and baby food hot dog bits. Also her food has be served at room temperature so we have to microwave her food for a few seconds before we give it to her.
• Penny just started losing her quills last night. Hedgehogs lose their quills at about 12 weeks old and then again a month or so later. Right now she's got baby quills that stick up EVERYWHERE! Eventually her quills will lay down flat and she can be petted.
• Hedgehogs are originally from Africa so Penny likes it hot. At night I have to put a little heating lamp on top of her cage to keep her warm. If she cools down too much, she'll try to hibernate. If she tries to hibernate, but can't fully do it, she'll get really sick. So we just have to make sure to keep her warm.
• Oh and one of the best parts? Penny is litterbox trained! Which makes it a lot easier to keep her cage clean. Except for the part where she likes to throw litter around :) Hedgehogs have loose bowels and so when they run, they use the bathroom. Every morning I have to clean up her wheel and empty her litterbox. But it could be worse...

So....that's pretty much everything I can think of. Oh, Penny has fungus on her ears but we can't get to them to put cream on, so we have to put her in a little bit of water in the sink in order to keep her head up long enough to get the cream on. Other than that....any other questions, just ask!

Where to start?
Well you are probably reading this from a windows based machine, so I will elaborate on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, a company set up by Mark Shuttleworth, a South-African born multi-millionaire, as he started Thawte, the internet security certificates company. Linux is based off of Unix, which was the first widespread operating system (OS) and has it roots in the 1970's.

Fuelled by its backers, Ubuntu has topped the Linux distribution lists overnight. Ubuntus slogan is "Linux for Human Beings" which gives the essence of what the project is trying to achieve: to get normal people to use Linux. This is no easy task with Microsoft dominating the computer OS market for well over twenty years.

Ubuntu is fighting its corner though, with its easy to use interface from Gnome and it's file system from Nautilus (both open-source projects, like Ubuntu). Ubuntu has everything built in from the ground up, making it attractive for buisness', local governments and the average user.

Did you like Firefox Web Browser?
If you did you are one of the over 100 million people who do. Firefox is built straight in to Ubuntu, along with Evolution Mail (Like Outlook Express). In fact Ubuntu has a lot of what the everyday user needs: it can burn dvds, cds, play all your media and more. It is these built in features from one compact disc that make Ubuntu special.

Will it replace Windows?
The direct answer is no. If you like me have a lot of commercial(pay-for) software then Ubuntu cannot use them. The exception to this is some Games like Doom and Quake which people have re-engineered to be run in Ubuntu. In most cases this should not matter as Ubuntus piles of software does the job for you.

It is worth a try though, even if you do not have a cd-burner, Canonical (The company behind Ubuntu) will ship it to you without cost, you pay nothing! It is also cheaper to ship more than one cd, so you get copies to distribute.

The Future of Open-Source
Who knows? The future looks bright with Ubuntu knocking down inhibitions people have about Linux. Linux has always been popular in Universitys, where all good ideas start! As to whether Linux will overcome Microsoft? I doubt it in the near future as Windows has exclusive distribution deals with every large pc manufacturer, making Windows the default choice. Not every monopoly lasts though, and Firefox is an indication of the future.

The words of Michael Savage led me to creating another sonic sez (says) video. This time I wanted to contribute to the awareness of Autism. Certainly difficult to understand, a lot of people have misconceptions about what autism is. There is no excuse for what Savage said and my video will hopefully inspire some people to learn about autism. It doesn't have in-depth information, but I think it suffices for a video done on a whim. The definition I use in the video is from http://www.assew.org/what_is_autism.htm. I think i have a little more humor in this one simply because Savage set himself up to be cracked on.
