William: You might have noticed by now that I'm a huge fan of photography and design. Well at least if you're a regular at The Hunting Club. Fashion savvy readers might also be familiar with the name Hedi Slimane. He's probably most famous for being the lead designer for Dior Homme from 2000 until 2007. However, he's more than a great designer which he proves in his regularly updated photography diary. Make sure to check out his photographs since it's worth taking a look at the work of a talented photographer.

Pour l'occasion, son défilé reste très rock'n roll. Beaucoup de noir, de matières nobles et satinées. Sont présents dans toute la collection les low boots, blazers et cravates féminines, à l'allure follement rock-mantique (rock & romantique). Mais KVA a le souci du détail et de la féminité : une rose noire en forme de broche, un sautoir, un short mini... les silhouettes sont toujours androgynes et follement class.

I wasn't jazzed by his installation, Young American, at FOAM when I saw it in Amsterdam last summer.  His pictures were strong enough that they didn't need the flags, the music and the other etc etc.  You can see his fashion and personal work on his website http://www.hedislimane.com

Killars intresse för mode har exploderat. Det märks i tidningshyllan, i reklamen och i klädbutikerna.
− Killarna är våra bästa kunder, säger Jens Bergqvist på klädbutiken Face i Varberg.

Jens Bergqvist har sålt kläder i 22 år. Förr gick det inte att sälja kläder till killar, berättar han. Det var bara blåjeans och tröjor utan tryck; blått, svart och beigt. Då stod killarna för 20 procent av omsättningen och tjejerna för resten.
− Nu är det 50/50 och killarna är på väg att gå om. Det har exploderat och det har vi modetidningarna att tacka för, säger Jens Bergqvist.
Renodlade modemagasin för män som King och DV Man har lanserats i Sverige de senaste åren. Tidningen Café har gått från klassiskt herrtidningsstuk till livsstilsmagasin med modeinriktning.
Att det satsas på modetidningar för män brukar förklaras med att annonsmarknaden för groomingprodukter har växt något oerhört. Enligt Sifos reklammätningar har annonspengarna som satsas på manliga skönhetsprodukter mer än fördubblats sedan 2000.
Intresset hänger också samman med en allmän trend i samhället, tror Johan Wirfält på tidningen Rodeo.
− Det är någon slags rörelse i tiden. Hela samhällets fokus ligger på varumärken och individualisering. Att synas har blivit ett tecken på status, och då blir det viktigare vad man har på sig.
Johan Wirfält nämner modeskapare som Tom Ford och Hedi Slimane som nyckelpersoner i herrmodets utveckling. De byggde uppmärksammade varumärken med sina klädkollektioner för män och blev själva ikoner och förebilder.

I dag finns det modebutiker även i mindre städer som ser sig själva som en del av den internationella modevärlden.
− När jag går in i en modebutik i Halmstad där jag växte upp så pratar man om säsonger och kollektioner. Det är en jargong som har tagit sig in, som inte har funnits tidigare, säger Johan Wirfält.
Jens Bergqvist har märkt att kunskaperna har ökat bland hans manliga kunder.
− Många kommer in och vill ha de senaste märkena som de har läst om. Vissa frågar efter kläder som bara finns i USA. Internet och alla tidningar har gjort att kunskaperna är mycket, mycket större.
Johan Wirfält minns hur annorlunda det var för tio år sedan.
− När jag växte upp fick jag vänta i åtta månader innan mode från Paris nådde Halmstad via modetidningar som i-D och The Face. Nu kan jag kolla på nätet en timme efter modevisningarna.

Scissor Sister Jake Shears will be featured on the cover of the coming issue of BUTT, the quarterly gay journal which is equal parts raunch and literary interviews. This time it's by the fabulous designer/photographer Hedi Slimane. This fall issue - no. 24 - will be out late August. With loads of contributions by BUTT readers and interviews with Jake Shears from New York, Rosa von Praunheim from Berlin, Will Munro from Toronto and ‘Your Big Dick Host’ from Brooklyn.

It is really beyond belief for me that a designer with absolutely no sense of fit, proportion, or thematic continuity was given the reigns of such a prestigous house as Dior Homme. I mean just look at the pocket placement and sleeve shape of that white shirt, the volume of those black pants, or the terrible tailoring of that vest. Also, men shouldn't look like they have child birthing hips, so maybe cut the trouser pockets a little tighter next time. And don't even get me started on the awful additon of those so summer '08 glasses.

Kris Van Asche, who was chosen to replace fashion visionary Hedi Slimane last Spring, has dragged the respected Dior name through the mud yet again. You may remember my post about his equally questionable design choices for the Fall 08 Dior Homme collection which seemed to take it's cue from an early 90's (goth-ish) International Male catalog. At least then the collection was cohesive...

For his Spring 2009 collection however, all taste has been thrown out the window. Van Asche seems to be referencing Hedi Slimane's design aesthetic as well as dated pop cultural references from Slimane's hay day at Dior (2004-2006) and mixing them together into a total sticky mess.

Example:

ON THE TOP: The jacket and long hair are an obvious throwback to Hedi Slimane's stylistic choices. However, when Slimane did it is came across as clean and polished.He would have cropped the jacket and made it fitted under the arms This just looks like a sloppy teenage chauffeur working at red lobster.

ON THE BOTTOM: Wow, I didn't know Leslie Hall was still culturally relevant.... Gold Lame? Giant Rhinestones? "Bling"? Apparently Van Asche missed the memo: Dior Homme is a rock house, not an electro trash label.....
