I wonder who Hieronymus Bosch would have voted for (if he were here in the USA). I talked to my uncle last night about the two political parties.  He sounded a little down in the mouth about McCain during the convention, and based upon what I know about him I have a hard time seeing him as an Obama supporter.  So I asked him, though it's none of my business, who was likely to get his vote --  or did he feel that there should be a pox on both their houses?

He told me that whenever people ask him questions like that, he tells them (I'll paraphrase): "we're on this planet that's whirling through space going whatever gazillion miles per second, and the moon is here spinning around with it, and it's going around the sun, and through the galaxy and the whole galaxy is going through space, and you're asking me if I give a hoot about that stuff." (I sanitize his remark just a bit.)

Gotta admit.  He's got a point.

In this political season, let's all remember to have a life.

Men riding beasts. Universal nudity. Pools of water. Fruit. Birds. Seriously sounds like a great party theme to me, but not to Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. These objects promote themes of temptations of pleasure, the abandonment of morality, deception of the hedonistic world, the sin of self-gratification, and licentiousness. Few other paintings illustrate such pleasures in the vivid symbolism of Hieronymus Bosch. (Logic dictates that an artist with such a great name should produce such a poignant warning) Not that Bosch paints himself as the only clothed figure (located in the lower right of the center panel. A brief overview:

The Garden of Earthly Delights is a triptych painted by the early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939. Dating from 1503 and 1504, when Bosch was about 50 years old, it is his best-known and most ambitious work. Bosch's masterpiece reveals the artist at the height of his powers; in no other painting does he achieve such complexity of meaning or such vivid imagery. The triptych depicts several biblical and heretical scenes on a grand scale and as a "true triptych", as defined by Hans Belting, was probably intended to illustrate the history of mankind according to medieval Christian doctrine.

The triptych is painted in oil and comprises three sections: a square middle panel flanked by rectangular ones that can close over the center as shutters. The left panel depicts God presenting to Adam the newly created Eve. The central panel is a broad panorama of sexually engaged nude figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit, and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation.

Art historians and critics frequently interpret the painting as a didactic warning on the perils of life's temptations. However, the intricacy of its symbolism, particularly that of the central panel, has led to a wide range of scholarly interpretations over the centuries. 20th-century art historians are divided as to whether the triptych's central panel is a moral warning, or a panorama of paradise lost. American writer Peter S. Beagle describes it as an "erotic derangement that turns us all into voyeurs, a place filled with the intoxicating air of perfect liberty".

Hieronymus Bosch (pronounced /ˌhaɪəˈrɒnəməs bɒʃ/, Dutch /je'ɾonimus bɔs/, born Jeroen Anthonissen van Aken /jə'rʊn ɑn'toniːzoːn vɑn 'aːkən/ c. 1450 – August 9, 1516) was an Early Netherlandish painter of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Many of his works depict sin and human moral failings.

Bosch used images of demons, half-human animals and machines to evoke fear and confusion to portray the evil of man. His works contain complex, highly original, imaginative, and dense use of symbolic figures and iconography, some of which was obscure even in his own time.

Hieronymus Bosch ist einer meine Lieblingsmaler. Man kann seine Bilder stundenlang betrachten und wird immer wieder neue, winzige Details entdecken, die einer bestimmten Szene eine neue Bedeutung geben. Bosch malte in Symbolen, die Todsünden und Tugenden repräsentieren, deren wirkliche Bedeutung aber nur im Kontext ihrer bildlichen Ordnung zu verstehen ist. Oder auch nicht. Vieles ist widersprüchlich und unscharf, aber gerade das macht den eigentümlichen Reiz seiner Bilder aus. Man kann in ihnen lesen wie in einem Buch.

Sein Werk ist nicht Kritik der Vergangenheit, sondern eine Warnung an die Zukunft. Er stirbt 1516. Ein Jahr später nagelte Luther seine Thesen an das Hauptportal der Schlosskirche zu Wittenberg. Das Mittelalter war zu Ende, eine neue, unheilschwangere Zeit zog herauf.

Also schnell hinein in die stinkende Jeans aus'm Secondhand Laden. Sie und meine Waschmaschine hatten sich gegenüber lediglich eine kurze, nicht sonderlich intime Bekanntschaft zu verzeichnen. Scheiß Bierflecken im T-Shirt...Deo? Was ist das denn? Rein in die zerfetzen CIRCA's, ach welch ein käsiges Erlebnis!

Aber egal jetzt, ich will Weizen!

Der Weg zum LIDL ist wie ein Spaziergang durch ein Hieronymus Bosch Gemälde - gepiercte Fratzen, schreiend, saufend, stinkend und immer mit dabei ihre von Flöhen und Würmern zermarterten Köter. Sitz, Platz, lieb sein, wie meinen? Punk's alive...

Verdammt, einen frischen Scheißhaufen übersehen. Die breiige Masse arbeitet sich durch meine durchlöcherten Schuhsohlen. Egal, hab Fußpilz und bin eh schon seit Geburt schwer traumatisiert.

Die Griffe der LIDL - Eingangstür meide ich - nicht, weil ich etwa paranoid vor Virenattacken bin, sondern weil jeder Arsch die Viren schon auf zwei Meter Entfernung ausmachen kann. Gute Möglichkeit die Hundescheisse loszuwerden. Ein gekonnter Tritt, die Tür ist auf, die Kacke weg und der Horror geht los.

Zum Glück steht das Weizen gleich am Eingang. Aber vergiss es - Türkenmutter plus Anhang versperrt jede Ausweichsmöglichkeit in Richtung Kasse. Also hinterherdackeln. Ich glaub heute gab es mal wieder Sucuk. Riecht jedenfalls so. Will ja niemanden beleidigen, ich liebe Sucuk und salzigen Ayran, aber nicht als Fahne, und vor allem nicht, wenn ich selbst nichts davon hatte und im LIDL stehe.

Doch siehe da - die vier kleinen Blagen haben die Süßwarenabteilung gewittert, der Weg wird unter tosendem Kindergeschrei frei und ich renn los...YEAH! Nee, doch nicht - Kasse auf einmal schrott.

"Tut mir wirklich leid!", sagt die Frau an der sonst geldspeihenden Tippse.

"Jaja, auch egal!", und ab zur nächsten Kasse. Da geht's dann auch endlich mal zur Sache - Mist, sieben Cents zu wenig, kein Erbarmen von Seiten der Kassiererin, also aus vier kurzerhand drei Weizen gemacht. Auf's "Auf Wiedersehen" heute mal geschissen.

Beim rausgehen fast wieder die Kacke erwischt, doch Glück gehabt. Dann, eine halbe Minute darauf wieder Glück gehabt, den Bus gestrichen, der Schreck vor dem zerstückelt-auf-der-Kreuzung-liegen, ist von dannen...

Zu Hause angekommen, Tür auf, Gelaber der mich hassenden Nachbarin ignoriert, denn ich höre nunmal nachts gerne laute Musik. Komme oben an, schließ auf, mach mich nackig, leg mich hin, trink das erste güldene Weizen und denke:

"Amy, du hast es einfach drauf!"

After tasting a delicious beverage such as Tilburg's the other day, via my best mate Sean; I gathered I'd begin another quest of hobbies and review food, drinks, and other edible products that normally aren't consumed by the everyday man, woman, and child.

With that being said, Tilburg's is a basic Brown Ale that has a rich sweet taste to it without a strong caramel odor. It is also much smoother than I'm used to with european brown ales such as New Castle, which was my choice before this wonder. Brown Ales are normally great for winter by my standards, but this one can easily be taken on a hot summer day.

Another fantastic part about it is the art work on the bottle, it's a piece depicting hell by Hieronymus Bosch. It's quite strange and morose at first glance, but it definitely gives it character compared to most beers I've consumed. Here's the full canvas, notice the the piece of it at the bottom right corner. Quite fascinating.

My build is probably a little closer to Bosch's original vision than most of the builds, mostly because I took inspiration and actually started work on many of the individual elements of it many months ago.

Heaven has God's office and God's bed (never heard of the Big Bang?), Earth is full of fleshly delights, and in Hell you can sell your soul to the Devil for L$1,000,000.

• Isn't she a Catholic?  
• What did she worry that the household staff would think of her, that she was a married woman going to bed with her husband and that they may have sex but that she wasn't planning to have any more children?  
• What is the equipment she uses? Is there a Hieronymus Bosch method?  Isn't 'equipment' a strange word to use?  Especially as no word at all was required, surely 'contraceptives' would have done the job.
• Why didn't they name Leo Balmoral Blair à la Brooklyn Beckham?

“O Jardim das Delícias” foi a maior realização do pintor holandês Hieronymus Bosch. É uma obra composta por três painéis, sendo o painel central objeto deste estudo. Nele, Bosch apresenta um dos setes pecados capitais: a luxúria. De caráter extremamente moralizador, “O Jardim das Delícias” é para o autor uma forma de advertir os homens sobre os castigos e punições futuros que a luxúria pode causar. Bosch utiliza-se de muitos símbolos medievais para representar o ato sexual, como mastigar ou colher frutas, e os genitais humanos, sendo peixes e aves símbolos fálicos. O Jardim está repleto de homens e mulheres que se divertem em jogos de sedução e volúpia. Outros seres exóticos também povoam o Jardim, como os animais híbridos e sereias que parecem estar totalmente integrados aos humanos. Sem dúvida, “O Jardim das Delícias” destaca-se por sua originalidade e criatividade, características que o faz ser reinterpretado até os dias de hoje.

"O Jardim das Delícias" é composto por 3 quadros. O painel central, o esquerdo, O Paraíso Terreno e o direito, O Inferno.

Das pesquisas que fiz para tentar saber um pouco mais sobre esta obra percebi que a sua interpretação não está muito clara para os contemporâneos.

"Esta é uma obra complexa, povoada de pequenas figuras e criaturas imaginárias.

O painel da esquerda, mostra Adão e Eva no paraíso (lar dos homens antes da queda), o painel central, é uma dissertação sobre a luxúria em suas muitas formas. Para a mente medieval, o acto sexual era uma prova da perda do estado de graça pelo homem. Assim, O jardim das delícias foi colocado entre o Jardim do Éden, onde o primeiro pecado foi cometido e o Inferno.

Os morangos representam os prazeres da carne. Na linguagem medieval, colher frutos significa fazer sexo.

O painel da direita, o Inferno converteu-se numa estranha profecia do clima mental que impuseram ao mundo no fim do nosso século à globalização e à nova ordem económica. Na parte de cima deste painel, (o que representa a condenação eterna) há uma imagem típica do inferno, com fogueiras ardentes a deitar enxôfre. Em baixo, desde a foice que parece um tanque em formato fálico, feita de duas orelhas e uma lâmina, até aos animais estranhos e cruéis da parte inferior, Bosch dá vazão a toda a força da sua imaginação.

Nesta obra Bosch representou os prazeres carnais, como se fosse um grande parque de diversões futurista. Um maravilhoso cenário para os grandes amantes desfrutarem de grandes momentos agradáveis, ao som do canto dos pássaros e divertindo-se na fonte de água cristalina.

Em baixo encontramos um lago com as Casas dos Prazeres, neste lago os homens tomam banho junto com as mulheres, o que não acontece no lago do meio, neste só as mulheres estão dentro do lago e os homens ao redor do lado de fora."

Dieu, évidemment, se ferait un peu tirer l'oreille et ferait durer le plaisir. Juste histoire de leur faire comprendre qu'il n'est pas certain qu'ils en vaillent la peine, qu'ils n'ont pas été particulièrement reconnaissants jusqu'à présent. Et que s'ils veulent une aide efficace ils n'ont qu'à aller frapper au Panthéon où il y a très certainement de très grands hommes de très grande qualité susceptibles d'être à la hauteur de la tâche (après tout ce n'est pas si sorcier : ils ont déjà trouvé E=mc2 et n'ont donc plus qu'à trouver la solution des autres équations). Ou demander à des évolutionnistes une théorie pour faire revenir le soleil et la lumière ? Ou, qui sait, attendre simplement que le dieu hasard fasse lui-même les choses ?

Les hommes épuisés d'errer dans la pénombre renonceraient alors à leur arrogance et rendraient grâce, bâtissant de grandes cathédrales et couvrant la terre de petites chapelles. Et la lumière reviendrait, radieuse et ruisselante de beauté et les hommes diraient : "OK, on a été nuls, cette fois on arrête nos conneries et on protège la Création au lieu de la démolir". Et en voyant les abeilles revenir et les fleurs s'ouvrir et les enfants jouer dans les bacs à sable, Dieu se dirait qu'il a bien fait de leur donner encore une dernière chance :-)

Esta pintura la descubrí ya que es la portada de uno de los pocos libros que he leido y encantado: El Anticristo de Friedrich Nietzsche.

Interpretación personal: (Influenciada descaradamente por el libro antes mencionado) La coronación de espinas biblicamente se entiende como una burla de los soldados romanos hacia Jesús, ya que lo acusaban (de entre tantas) de conspirar contra el césar y el imperio romano al considerarse "Rey de los Judíos". ¿Quiénes son los que coronan a Jesús? ¿Quiénes lo divinizan?

• Los dictadores. (Superior Izquierda) Quienes son unos dementes, que imponen con mano de hierro su ley. Porque no importa que tanto se sufra con el dictador, la religion ofrece la esperanza de una vida mejor y eso conlleva a la resignación.
• Los ricos. (Superior derecha) Compasivos, fieles, donando altas cantidades de dinero a las arcas de las iglesias para los necesitados exorcizando así su culpabilidad, la animalidad con la cual tratan a "los de abajo".
• Los hipócritas. (Inferior izquierda) Los que clavan con sus acciones cada vez más a Jesús, pero al mismo tiempo piden perdón por hacerlo.
• Los condenados. (Inferior derecha) En la parte más baja de la imagen, entregándose completamente a la misericordia de El Salvador. Los que simplemente esperan la salvación y no hacen nada.

Iglesia somos todos. ¿Y todos ellos son Iglesia?
