Today we started later than we intended. For some reason we both slept through our 08:30 alarm (which is rare for Lily, but not for me). We got out of the apartment around 11:30.
We made up for it by walking for almost 7 hours straight.
We headed towards the siene with our original intention being to walk along it to La Tour d'Eiffel.
We accidentally stumbled upon the Louvre of all things. We walked through the courtyard to the main entrance and enjoyed the ambiance of the crowd for a bit. We passed through our first small glimpse of beautiful Parisian gardens and big water fountains.
We continued along to Place de Concordes. We got our first sighting (from a distance) of the Tour d'Eiffel from here. From then we set our sights on the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe.
We crossed to the west side and moved forward. By this point already we began to feel tired (not helped by the fact that we only had a cup of coffee and quarter of a palmelo for breakfast due to our late start). We came across lots of overpriced, touristy restaurants and other "high end" retail. Suprisingly there were a few car manufacturer showcase stores in amongst regular downtown retail (something we don't come across in North America).
We came to Arc de Triomphe and could not figure out to get across the vicious roundabout to it.
I wanted to just try and go for it (across all the speedy cars). Lily was more sensible and insisted we keep looking for another way across.
She was right, we finally came upon an underpass on the north side.
We rested for a bit beneath the arc, regained our bearings (I did, Lily was never quite sure which direction we were facing).
We crossed to the other side of the Champs-Elysées and headed south.
We finally had some lunch. Two fantastic baguettes from Brioche Dorée (a chain restaurant?) to go.
We went into a Virgin Megastore and looked around for a bit (I was going to get a Jean Vigo boxset, but decided to wait).
The store alarm buzzed on our way out and security waved us over. We asked if he wanted to check our bag and he looked confused and pointed at his ear. Eventually he waved us on. We still don't know if he was a deaf security guard or did not understand English (he didn't say a word to us).

We walked back down and passed behind the Grand Palais on Franklin D. Roosevelt avenue and crossed back to the left bank. We had heard so much of the view of the Eiffel Tower at the Place des Invalides that we headed that way. -- BTW, they were wrong! Near there was Napoleon's statue, more beautiful architecture and his tomb.

Finding our way back to Mouffetard and going through our dark courtyard was a pleasure to finally rest our feet again. [gallery]

Well, it looks like I have to write another post for February again! So my friend Stefania turns out to be leaving for her internship this Saturday, March 1st, so we decided to have a little get together as out last time to see each other in Paris on Wednesday. We trekked over to Invalides, where Napoleon is buried. However, we were just an hour too late, getting there at 5pm, the tomb being closed at 4pm. So we ended up just taking a walk outside the building and around the garden. The pictures I took are posted on Facebook!

The next day I went to the Paris Erasmus Party for the second time at Mix Club. This time was a lot more fun as I was bothered a lot less. I still got grabbed a few times, but no one kept at it after I shoved them off of me like the last time, so it wasn't so bad at all. And not only that but I bumped into a friend of mine from school, in fact my friend Claire whom I went with the last time I went there! Anyway, it was a lot of fun and my friend and I even met another Canadian girl and her friend who's American. All in all it was a silly, fun time, and some of the moments are recorded and can be found on my page on Facebook again!

Tonight will be another night out with friends. I am heading out with Michelle, a girl I met volunteering with the animal rights group here called Droits des Animaux. She invited me out with her friends, so we'll see what mayhem ensues! I'm sure pictures will surface on Facebook soon enough!

Thanks for listening and I hope all of you are doing well, my thoughts are with you!

Cheers,

Meagan

Amen.

At last, I have published a page detailing my adventures and misadventures in Paris. For four days, I was lost in Paris' narrow, twisty streets lined with tall, stone buildings. Yet, I managed to stumble upon the sights I planned to visit and many more. Paris, for me, was about the journey of place and time, which allowed me to dabble in the art, architecture and culture of France.

The full account is here: http://winentrip.wordpress.com/perdu-lost-in-paris/. Or, you can just click on "Perdu (lost) in Paris" under Pages, to the left.

I have posted my pictures in a set entitled, "France," on Flickr. This is the link: www.flickr.com/photos/bspicher.
