Yep tonight we also see the second of the third part episode.  Can't wait to see if Meredith is found, or what is up with that little girl.  To re-cap what happened in the first of the three partner, click HERE.

This episode starts with the view of the water where we last saw Meredith falling into, we see her briefly surface gasping for air, but finally sinks again.  She is also the voice over for the beginning speech.  Alex is feeling overwhelmed dealing with the victims families, all wanting to know if they are in the hospital, but everyone is anxious as the lack of identification only creates more frustration for the family.  In the light of this, Alex comes up with the spontaneous idea of taking pictures of the patients, but even this doesn't satisfy the families, as they still complain their loved ones are not up on the identification board.  A man comes up to Alex unable to locate his pregnant wife.  Alex rushes to inform Addison that their pregnant patient may have a identity.  Addison states that Alex must thoroughly make sure that this pregnant lady is definitely the mans wife, to avoid giving hope to the man if she isn't.

George continues to lie to the patient, who he promised to locate her son, in order to get her to agree to surgery.  Bailey becomes furious at this, by telling him he has made a promise that he doesn't know if he can keep, and sends him to find the boy.  George looks in the hospital, everywhere he can think of, until he bumps into Alex who takes him to the morgue.  George still can't find the boy, even in the morgue, but they do stumble upon a body of a pregnant lady.  George finally checks the OR board as a final resort, only to find out that his wife is operating upon a little boy.  Callie confirms to George this is the boy he is looking for, and George goes on to embarrass them both when he informs the entire OR what he is going to do to Callie that night. Callie cuts him off, and tells him she is working.

Alex brings a photo of his pregnant woman patient, maintaining that her injuries may make her a little unrecognisable, but the man states this isn't his wife.  He secondly shows him the photo of the morgue patient, and the man confirms that the photo is his wife, and collapses in a fit of tears.  Alex finds Addison and says that their pregnant lady is still a Jane Doe.  Leading Addison to question would anyone notice if she was to disappear, and Alex says he would.

Izzie is at the end with her patience, while dealing with the patient trapped under the car.  She calls the Chief for instructions.  Mark and the Chief talk Izzie through the procedure of making burr holes (holes in a patients skull to relieve the cranium pressure) with a ordinary drill. I have seen this in real life, it is amazing procedure to watch.  Izzie does it successful, and her patient is finally transported to the hospital, and is let in the OR to perform a crainotomy by making burr holes, with a surgical drill.  The Chief also informs her she is finally off probation.

Cristina is still suturing patients, awaiting Meredith's return to inform her about her engagement.  Cristina worries when all the other interns return, bar Meredith, and no-one knows where she is.  Burke questions Cristina where she is so anxious to tell Meredith their news, and she tells him Meredith is "her" person, and it also makes their news official.

Merediths patient is located by rescue workers, but still she is nowhere to be found.  Derek finds the little girl, who he saw following Meredith earlier, and asks her where Meredith is.  Silently she points to the water, and with that Derek rushes into it, and finds her pale and not breathing.  He performs CPR on route to the hospital, but there is no still no response from her.

Derek is told by the Chief to leave the trauma room, while the Chief, Burke and Addison work together to try and save Meredith, with Derek waiting outside, with Mark next to him.  Mark puts his hands on Derek, to give him support.  Aww how sweet.

All the interns are told about Meredith and rush to the trauma room.  Cristina tries to go inside, but Izzie stops her, and states Meredith will survive this, as Izzie believes in the good; that Denny is always with her and George getting married to Callie, was a massive mistake.

Meredith finally flat lines, and we see her sit upright gasping for air.  She is in a empty room, and sees Dylan Young (the guy who was blown up while undetonating the shell in a previous episode) and goes on to ask him if she is dead.  Denny states she is.

It sounds like another unmissable episode, so don't forget to tune in tonight to watch it.

On any given Sunday afternoon in Oberlin, the handful or so of restaurants open for brunch are packed with student sick of the usual fare and townspeople looking to step out of their own houses. I’m walking to The Feve to meet Jane Doe, an art student from Philadelphia who happens to be passing through Oberlin this week.
She’s standing on the sidewalk outside, tapping her feet. She’s early, and glances both ways attempting to recognize who it might be that is coming to meet her this afternoon. She appears collected and well put together for the occasion, wearing a dark corduroy jumper, a black flowered smock shirt, and leggings. She smiles as I approach her pointing at the notebook I’m carrying under my arm and we enter the restaurant to talk.
Jane isn’t a famous artist. She’s a first year at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Pennsylvania. She’s in town staying with a friend of a friend for a few days during their spring break in order to explore the Cleveland Arts scene and Oberlin’s own Allen Memorial Art Museum.
She’s shy about her work and keeps pointing out that she’s younger than I am. I remind her that some of the greatest artists are young and she leans back in her chair and laughs. The first time someone offered to buy a piece of art she made, Jane was taken aback. “Why would people pay money for this,” she mused. “I just don’t get it. I love it because it’s mine and has a piece of me in it. When I look at a painting or a sketch that I made, it looks different because beneath the lines and colors I see the time I spent crafting it to make it look perfect.”
What you can’t help loving about Jane is her nonchalance. Unlike a lot of art students I meet her age, she isn’t wrapped up in her own so-called creative genius. She wants to use her college years as a creative outlet probably but admits she’ll “end up working at an auction house or small gallery while working on [her] masters.” She’s practical and understands that the arts are a tricky field to break into, regardless of the medium.
“I'm hoping to be able to try printmaking in the next few years, maybe even some more sculpture work,” she says while hungrily eying the heaping plate of eggs that’s just arrived. She picks up the bottle of ketchup from the middle of the table and tosses it between her hands. “I love things like this. Yes, I know it’s a ketchup bottle but cheap art materials are a must. It’s the whole I’m a poor college student spiel I guess, but I do a lot of sculpture work and bottles make great bases,” she giggles and promises not to take the bottle with her.
“It’s funny how your entire system of working changes at school. At home, I have my parents – and my dad is an artist too. It runs on his side of the family I guess. But I always took
Art classes and my dad encouraged me to sketch and paint. I got my first oils when I was probably in third grade and he kind of taught me how to use them and bought me linseed oil and turpentine. I’m used to using the good stuff and when you’re paying your way through school, it’s really hard.” Jane talks about her father frequently. He is her inspiration despite never having gone to art school.
“I probably consider him one of the most talented people I know. It’s funny, I always saw him with a paintbrush. He would always be painting things for my mom and I. He used to build these elaborate toy Santas for my mom every Christmas and would paint them these beautiful colors. We’re not even religious, but I loved those Santas.”
I ask Jane the obvious questions, what she would do if she wasn’t in art school, about her success thus far, and her experience in other outlets. Every time, she amazes me with the unexpected. If school hadn’t worked out, she’d be in Europe studying Neo-Balkan music or chasing Beirut on tour. She swears the last real award she’s gotten for her work, despite her love for intricate details, was for a drawing of Ruby Bridges back in the second grade. A musician herself, Jane has been at the violin for the past 11 years. “I also sing,” she admits, “but I’m kind of shy about it so I really need to work on being able to perform in front of people. Right now I just can’t open myself up that much,” she pauses and changes the topic to her travels.
“You know I ran into Zach Codon [of Beirut] last week in New York City. He had on these hideous hipster Nike dunks complete with nasty rainbow colors. I was completely dumbfounded. Here’s this man I look up to for his amazing musical genius and he wears the most disgusting shoes. I mean, I’m not a girly girl about shoes or anything, but the whole ugly for the sake of being ugly trend… I just don’t get it.” She moves her foot from beneath the table. “Look I just wear Adidas Sambas. I’m not trying to attract extra attention or anything.” And you know she means it.

Ik ga u verblijden met een serie bijdragen onder de noemer: Jane's opvliegers. Dat lijkt me wel toepasselijk ivm met mijn overgang naar dit log. Een opvlieger is een powersurge die een emotie, een irritatie, een gevoelen, een gedachtengang verwoordt. Kort of lang van duur maar altijd (hart)verwarmend.

Ik wil u vermaken, goedschiks of kwaadschiks. Of u nu lacht of jankt, uw emotie/geraaktheid is mijn beloning. Dat ik zuig mag inmiddels bekend zijn. Daar hoeft u verder niet over te commenten. In de hoop dat we samen een aardige tijd op het slappe koord mogen dansen, neem ik u mee naar het onderwerp van de eerste Opvlieger: OPPORTUNISTEN. Dat het daarmee in mijn introductie-schrijfsel meteen weer over mezelf gaat moet u mij vooral euvel duiden. Had u echt iets anders verwacht? Schattig!!

Wat is een opportunist? Is een opportunist een draaikont zonder moreel besef of integriteit die iedere gelegenheid aanpakt voor persoonlijk profijt? Of is een opportunist iemand die strategisch denken tot een way of life heeft getransformeerd en instinctief kansen herkent en ze met inachtneming van persoonlijke normen en waarden weet in te bedden in het levensplan?

Het woord opportunist heeft negatieve connotaties. Het wordt niet bepaald als compliment ervaren als iemand je een opportunist noemt. Dat vind ik jammer want in mijn optiek is de opportunist een levenskunstenaar. If life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. De opportunist heeft een constructieve, positieve houding.

Shakespeare zei het al in Julius Caesar:

"Brutus: There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat; and we must take the current when it serves or lose our ventures".

Waarom is niet iedere opportunist een draaikont zonder ruggengraat? Omdat het heel wel mogelijk is om met behoud van persoonlijke normen en waarden, de (levens)omstandigheden als instrument te gebruiken. Dat gaat sommigen beter af dan anderen. Het doel is eerder strategisch LEVEN dan strategisch DENKEN. Het grijpen van kansen, het zien van mogelijkheden moet een tweede natuur zijn. Een instinct.

Laten we het eens op mijn persoon betrekken. Ik ben een onaangenaam zeikwijf en heb met vrijwel iedereen wel eens een beef gehad. Meest recentelijk met Ace. Die was zo hard op mijn Achillesklit aan het wrijven dat ik het uitgilde en vervolgens besloot het hele genotgebeuren maar eens even te laten rusten. Toch was er onderhuids het gevoel dat het slechts een intermezzo betrof.

De groep mensen die nu virtueel al een paar jaar om elkaar heen baltst weet heel goed dat er een symbiose is. Bij de gratie van elkaar is er een interactie die aantrekkelijk is. Het schelden, tieren en elkaar bewust bezeren mag dan een merkwaardige vorm van contact zijn, het is wel contact. Het is communicatie, het is sociale omgang. Goed, slecht of onverschillig. Voor sommigen is het zelfs compensatie voor vormen van contact die anderszins ontbreken.

Ace had de gore moed om mij na de laatste hakpartij uit te nodigen voor een bezoek op een nieuwe site. Ik herken en erken die moed en ik snap zijn beweegredenen. Het verbaasde me dan ook niet dat ik allercharmantst werd uitgenodigd om bijdragen te leveren. Mutual interest works. Vergeef ik Ace zijn uitbarstingen? Ben ik vergeten wat er is voorgevallen? Vind ik hem ineens een mieterse kerel? Daar komt het opportunisme om de hoek.

Ik vind Ace nog steeds een enorme drol en zijn akties zijn over het algemeen onbetamelijk. Ik zou van Omerta nog geen tweedehands auto kopen. Dat staat echter een samenwerking niet in de weg. Ik hoef iemand niet aardig te vinden om er mee samen te kunnen werken. Het principe dat je sterke krachten kunt bundelen en daarmee kwaliteit kunt produceren prevaleert. Op voorwaarde dat er een zekere chemie is tussen de partners en dat hoeft geen lieflijke chemie te zijn. Mijn positie op dit log betreft een Status Aparte. Dat heb ik bedongen en op die manier kan ik mijn integriteit behouden. Ik word geen lid van een knokploeg. Geen anti-SSC-er. Leven en laten leven wat mij betreft. Ik schrijf en ik blijf. Het is niet mijn bedoeling om lieden af te fakkelen, te ontmaskeren of anderszins schade te berokkenen.

Op uw vraag: "Jane, is het "if you can't beat them, join them"? moet ik ontkennend antwoorden. Het feit dat ik hier schrijf is geen nederlaag of overwinning. Het is een keuze die mij mogelijkheden biedt. Ik wil schrijven en niet alleen voor de kat z'n viool. De belhamels van dit log willen af en toe rossen maar ook lezers bereiken die niet in dat rossen zijn geinteresseerd. We hebben dus een gemeenschappelijk doel: lezers vermaken. Ik kan hier zonder een constante vuist in mijn gelaat schrijven en de belhamels doen wat ze denken te moeten doen. Ik houd ze overigens verdomd goed in de smiezen. Waar je mee omgaat, word je mee besmet, zelfs met een Status Aparte. Ze hebben van mij geen carte blanche gekregen. Als het wat mij betreft over de grens van het betamelijke gaat, ga ik gewoon weer ergens anders opvliegen.

Heb ik vertrouwen in Ace en Omerta c.s.?? Hahahaha. Precies! Het zou me niet verbazen als ik ook hartelijk in de zeik ben genomen en Hama gewoon een mede-oprichter is en Vlunk als een soort Joris achter de knoppen zit. Uiteindelijk maakt me dat geen reet uit en calculeer ik die omstandigheden vrolijk in. Er is een nieuwe hangplek en ik denk dat er toekomst in zit.

Geef dit log een kans. Probeer ook eens een opportunist te zijn. Pluk de kans ipv de dag. Lucebert zegt dat "alles van waarde, weerloos is". Ik denk dat weerloosheid het ultieme wapen vormt en dat alles van waarde, weerbaar is. Dit is een weerbaar log.

We started dating because my best friend was dating hers.  We thought it would be a ball of laughs to double date everywhere.

We were wrong.  We drove each other so bat shit insane that we just stopped doing anything together.

One night, I get a call from Mademoiselle Doe and she informs me that I have been having sex with my best friend, who is a male mind you, and that to further our relationship, she wants to be there when I sleep with him again.

And inhale...

I was not sleeping with him to begin with, but, the part that gets me is that she just wanted to watch me have sex with him.  Not like a threesome, or her have sex with him.  She wanted to watch me have homosexual sex with my best friend.

At that point, I am sure you are surprised, I decided that we were at an end.

Leading up to the biting incident, we were sitting in the car talking and I was explaining myself to her.  I told her that it was hurtful and insulting that she would say the things she did and that I thought it was best if we just didn't see one another again.

She leaned over to kiss me, dipped her head and I felt her incisors crunch into my arm just above the elbow.  She came up, without releasing her teeth, and tore a mouth sized chunk of muscle, skin and whatever else lays in the arm of a man.

She got out of the car, spit my severed flesh in my face and walked away.

I immediately went to seek medical treatment.  Alas, she never bothered with the free help they offered her after the incident.

Needless to say, I married a much saner woman.

A few snippets of jargon that keep coming up are firstly:

John Doe or Jane Doe

At first I actually thought that Jane Doe was the name of a murdered female, but this is US crime jargon for an unidentifiable individual: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_doe. Not sure how widespread these terms are in the UK, but I can't recall it being used in any UK crime TV/literature.

(While setting up my MS Office Communicator at work, I noticed they used John Doe as the default password name in the set-up instructions).

Another term of rather phrase that keeps cropping up is Back in the Day a phrase that I'm more familiar with, perhaps comparable with Old Skool. Looks as if several Hip Hop acts (Missy Elliot) have used back in the day as song themes and titles.

I suppose 'back in the day' refers to the recollection of childhood and eary life experiences, with an emphasis on positive nostalgia.

There's a great scene in series 1 when street criminal and "stick-up" man Omar Little realises that he went to the same school as homicide detective William "Bunk " Moreland. A 'back in the day' exchange takes place and Bunk confirms that Omar must have watched him play lacrosse at school, and explains how he was the school's first black lacrosse player.
