Spieldauer: 113 Minuten - Land: USA / UK

Wer hat noch nicht von der berühmten Erzählung über Peter Pan (Jeremy Sumpter) gehört; dem Jungen, der niemals erwachsen werden wollte... und selbstverständlich den ebenso bekannten Charakteren wie Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood), einem jungen Mädchen auf dem Weg zur Adoleszenz, welches die meiste Zeit mir ihren beiden Brüdern Michael (Freddie Popplewell) und John (Harry Newell) verbringt. Zusammen erträumen sie sich fremde Welten, Fabelwesen; erzählen sich Geschichten über Piraten und all jene Dinge, über die man als Kind gerne spricht. Doch Wendy's Eltern (Jason Isaacs und Olivia Williams) sind skeptisch... sie wollen sie langsam aber sicher zu einer echten Dame erziehen, die ihre Kindheit hinter sich lässt. Doch bevor dies geschehen kann, wartet ein großes und vielleicht auch alles verändernde Abenteuer auf die Drei...

"Hallo Wendy... Ich bin's, Peter Pan"...

Eines Nachts erscheint ein seltsamer Junge im Zimmer der drei Geschwister; welcher sich förmlich als Peter Pan aus Nimmerland vorstellt. Es scheint fast, als hätte er Wendy's sehnsüchtigsten Wunsch erhört: ein junges, unschuldiges Mädchen bleiben zu können, fernab der "Erwachsenenwelt". Mit Hilfe einer kleinen Portion des sagenhaften Feenstaubs und einer gehörigen Portion Glauben erreichen die drei Geschwister schließlich Nimmerland, eine wunderbare Welt voller Magie und Abenteuer. Unglücklicherweise gibt es auch hier bösartige Kräfte und Machenschaften, hauptsächlich verkörpert durch den durch und durch bösen Hook und seine (nicht sonderlich intelligenten) Schergen, welche stets auf ihrem gruseligen Piratenschiff unterwegs sind. Bald schon erfährt man das einzige Ziel Hooks: und dies ist, Peter Pan ein für allemal auszuschalten. Der Hauptgrund dafür dürfte sein, dass Hook im Grunde das genaue Gegenteil von Peter ist: alt, alleine und ohne die Freuden des Lebens auskosten zu können... eine weitere Frage die man sich früher oder später stellt: für was wird Peter Pan sich letztendlich entscheiden - wird er in Nimmerland bleiben, oder sich entschließen, vielleicht doch ein eher "normales" Leben zu führen ?

"Kommst du mit... nach Nimmerland...?"

Am Film selbst ist (glücklicherweise!) nichts "normal". Er ist schlicht und einfach aussergewöhnlich in seiner Wirkungskraft; in seiner Mixtur aus Witzig-, Niedlich-, und Traurigkeitkeitselementen. Die Leistungen der Darsteller sind durchweg überzeugend. Allen voran der junge Jeremy Sumpter als Peter Pan weiß in dieser aussergewönlichen Rolle zu brillieren. Überhaupt wird man wird sich schnell mit den Charakteren anfreunden; durch die dargestellten Persönlichkeiten einerseits; und durch die warme, herzliche Art der Darsteller die diese verkörpern. Meiner Meinung nach sind einige Charaktere allerdings sehr einseitig dargestellt, und wirken in ihrer Persönlichkeit arg reduziert - was ich in diesem Fall aber nicht allzu negativ bewerte. Es passt einfach zum Film, der mit Sicherheit keine ausgefeilte Charakterstudie sein soll - sondern eher ein charmantes Märchen welches zum Nachdenken und Träumen einlädt - ebenso wie die Buchvorlage. Eine gelungene, ungekünstelte (naja), farbenfrohe Adaption meiner Meinung nach; welche einen unvergleichlichen magischen Unterton innehat. Ich habe jedenfalls selten einen so bewegenden (Kinder-) Film gesehen - dies mag ganz einfach an der universellen Botschaft und Bedeutung, nämlich die der vergänglichen Kindheit im allgemeinen (und das bestmögliche Auskosten derselben), zurückzuführen sein. Dies stimmt einen zutiefst wehmütig ! Und unterhält dabei noch wunderbar (auch oder besonders wenn man kein Erwachsener Zuschauer ist!).

"Ist der Wendy-Vogel tot... ?"

Der technische Part konnte mich ebenfalls überzeugen. Die Optik scheint exakt auf den magischen Unterton des Films abgestimmt zu sein; die genialen Flugszenen der Kinder, der Ritt auf den Wolken, das Piratenschiff - hier wurde mit viel Liebe zum Detail gearbeitet. Sicher, viel mithilfe von Bluescreens und dem Computer - dennoch, es ist ein wahres Fest für die Augen und wirkt gar nicht mal so artifiziell wie in manch anderen Filmen mit ähnlichen Szenen oder einem ähnlichen Aufgebot an Spezialeffekten. Eine ganz besondere Erwähnung muss der grandiose Soundtrack (Komponiert von James Newton Howard) erhalten. Eine unglaublich bewegende Klangerfahrung (Empfehlungen nach Szenen: Der erste Flug der Kinder; Der Feentanz, Glöckchens Tod) !

"Peter, komm und rette uns !"

Es ist eine zeitlose filmische Umsetzung der Geschichte von James Barrie, bestens geeignet für Kinder; aber auch ein erwachsendes Publikum. Teilweise etwas düster gehalten; fällt er insgesamt jedoch keinesfalls zu gruselig aus. Empfehlen würde ich den Film Kindern ab 8 oder 9 Jahren. Und selbstverständlich: allen Erwachsenen, die sich für gute Kinderfilme mit dem gewissen Etwas oder einer Extraportion "Magie" begeistern können. Ich gebe diesem Film 9.6/10 Punkten. Und einen IkarusAward:

- Für die Extraportion filmischer Magie und die zu Tränen rührende filmisch-magische Zelebrierung der weltlichen (und endlichen) Kindheit im Allgemeinen

No Jackie Chan movie could be a total misfire, however, and he's charmingly self-effacing here as a hapless chauffeur who inadvertently replaces his injured super-agent boss (Jason Issacs) and foils a madman (Ritchie Coster) who plans to infect the world's water supply (!) and reap a fortune selling pure bottled water. Jackie's a bumbling superhero after donning his boss's high-tech, Inspector Gadget-like tuxedo (it even has a "Mambo" setting), and curvaceous co-agent Jennifer Love Hewitt coaches him in crime fighting while closing in on the bad guys. It's all as routinely ridiculous as it sounds--Jackie's faux James Brown act is the only real highlight--and as critic Roger Ebert observed, the climax hinges on an insect queen that doesn't exist in nature! So, while Jackie and Jennifer provide a few moments of stellar stunts and random amusement, you can blame this mess on screenwriters who didn't do their homework. --Jeff Shannon

No suelo ponerme por norma en contra de nuestro cine, ni detracto una película de su factura antes de verla, pero si reconozco un cierto recelo cuando la película trata un tema histórico, y que es debido a las malas experiencias.

Teniendo una historia tan rica y documentada, con una lista interminable de reinos y reyes, y plagada de personajes carismáticos, habría miles de argumentos que con tan sólo reunir a un buen guionista con un buen director, podrían dar resultados excelentes, pero está visto que esa fusión guionista-director, está todavía a años luz de nuestras pantallas.

Historias trastocadas y expuestas con una visión actual, que más las integran en nuestros días que en su época, como esa “Juana la loca” que hace unos años tuvo la mala ocurrencia Vicente Aranda de ofertarnos, y que aunque contenía algún elemento apreciable, degeneraba en el aburrimiento más absoluto, del que se encargaba de sacar al género masculino la anatomía de Pilar L. de Ayala (las féminas seguíamos aburridas), y “Los Borgia”, de Antonio Hernández una ambiciosa superproducción sobre la tan traída y llevada históricamente, familia de procedencia levantina, a la que asesinaban sin piedad, sobre todo, las nefastas interpretaciones de unos actores mayormente inadecuados, y dejados a su libre albedrío, y un guión perfectamente mejorable si hubiera estado documentado, leyendo tan sólo libros como “Lucrecia Borgia”, de Cecil St. Laurent, “la Roma de los Borgia”, de Apollinaire, “Los Borgia”, de Mario Puzo, o “Lucrecia Borgia”, de John Faunce, con cuyas aportaciones históricas se hubiera conseguido un acercamiento a las correrías de la familia mucho más fiel y menos aburrida, son los decepcionantes precedentes, que explican los recelos que llevo al cine cuando se trata de ver una película española de corte histórico.

SPOILER a partir de aquí, para los que no hayáis visto “La conjura de el Escorial”, y tengáis intención de verla.

Esta vez, cuatro guionistas, entre los que se encuentra el propio director (Manuel Mir, Juan Antonio Porto, Antonio del Real, y Marta Rivera de la Cruz), son los que han desaprovechado la buena historia de intriga palaciega que tenían en sus manos, cayendo en el error de incluir en el argumento, elementos tópicos y trasnochados, más propios del cine de aventuras que se realizaba en los años 50-60, destinado al mero entretenimiento de niños y militares, en las sesiones de las 5 de la tarde de los sábados y domingos, que de una película realizada en la actualidad, y ateniéndose a un cierto rigor histórico.

Lo que tendría que haber sido el centro de la historia, (las intrigas que genera la petición de dinero por parte de Don Juan de Austria) queda diluido por la de los amoríos entre Espinosa (Jürgen Prochnow) y Damiana, una morisca (personaje, imagino, creado para alargar el metraje, y que se encarga muy bien de destrozar, la hija del director Blanca Jara del Real, en una de las más horribles interpretaciones que he podido ver en el cine), que nos persigue a lo largo de toda la película.

Secuencias innecesarias, como la de la alargada pelea en el mercado de un pueblo, entre el personaje de Jordi Mollà y el de Prochnow, con el grupo que pretende asesinarlos, y que contiene todos los tópicos trasnochados a los que antes me he referido, se entremezclan en una trama que pretende ser seria. Para enmarcar, el momento en el que uno de los “malos” embute la cara de Mollà entre un montón de tomates.

Innecesario también el efecto especial que se incluye en esa secuencia, y que prefiero pensar, está hecho en aras de la exportación del film a otros lares. Descolocado totalmente en esta película, vemos el trillado “vuelo” efectista de una flecha, que tuvo su debut en el “Robin Hood” de Kevin Reinolds.

Si el guión es muy flojo, las interpretaciones adolecen de una buena dirección. Se nota constantemente que detrás de la cámara hay alguien que se contenta con todo, y al que no se le ocurre aconsejar a los actores sobre la expresión que requieren sus personajes en sus diversas escenas. En el caso de su hija, casi es comprensible que del Real babee con todo lo que haga su vástaga, aunque con ello no le ayude mucho a mejorar, pero no se puede dar campo libre al resto de los actores. Alguien le tenía que haber dicho a la Ormond en su papel de la princesa de Éboli, que para interpretar a la “mala” de la película, hay que tener otros registros aparte de torcer la boca con gesto de desprecio. A Jason Isaacs, (Antonio Pérez), el otro protagonista de la trama, que no es precisamente hombre de muchos registros faciales, en otras películas se le ha sacado mejor partido si se le ha dirigido bien. Lo mismo ocurre con casi la totalidad del elenco, salvándose por los pelos Fabio Testi, en su papel de duque de Alba. Sale poco, pero parece asumir los cambios necesarios para su personaje. Salvaría también a Puigcorbé, que aunque para interpretar al taciturno y reflexivo Felipe II, abusa de la mirada baja, ofrece momentos brillantes (siempre comparándolo con el resto de sus compañeros de reparto). Y más por los pelos salvo a Prochnow, que intenta salir a flote con un personaje que naufraga por todos los lados, pero que se le nota, intenta currarse.

Interpretaciones y registros al margen, buena parte del balance negativo en el apartado actores españoles, lo tiene el doblaje que se hacen así mismos. La película se rodó en inglés para su mejor salida al mercado internacional, lo que ha hecho que los participantes nacionales tuvieran que doblarse para la exhibición en España de la película. Los doblajes son realmente nefastos, átonos, carentes de los matices necesarios para hacer creíbles los diálogos, y a años luz de los dobladores profesionales que han puesto voz a los actores extranjeros. Una pena más a añadir a las muchas que contiene la película.

Los 14 millones de presupuesto, una cantidad por cierto, muy respetable para nuestro cine, parecen haber ido directamente al diseño de producción. Impecable la recreación de la época, a través de un logrado vestuario, y unas localizaciones puntuales (El Escorial y Toledo). Eso al menos hace que se nos recree la vista, aunque no salva el resto de los fallos. La fotografía es “limpia”, sin más, y la banda sonora cumple, no molesta, pero tampoco es para no olvidar.

Esta “conjura” se queda en un quiero y no puedo, o no sé hacerlo. Un ejemplo de lo que no hay que hacer con una buena historia, para los directores españoles que tengan en mente abordar el rodaje de otra película de época, y, ante todo, una lástima de inversión, cuando no se aúnan el dinero y el talento.

Acaba de entrar no ar, no site da OddLot o trailer do filme "Um Homem Bom" ("Good"), produção inglesa estrelada por Viggo Mortensen e Jason Isaacs e dirigida pelo brasileiro Vicente Amorim, cineasta e um dos sócios da Mixer. O longa teve primeira exibição mundial no Festival de Toronto, que termina amanhã [13.09.2008], e marcou a estréia do cineasta na direção de um filme internacional. O trabalho anterior de Amorim, "Caminho das Nuvens", também foi exibido no mesmo festival.

After that screening, we did have dinner, but it wasn't that hot. We had time after that to go back to the hotel for a nap, but that might have done more harm than good. I seriously considered skipping the final screening of the night, but pushed through it and now here we are, waiting outside the Ryerson for the 9:00 pm screening of Good. Here's hoping it is. And to top it all off, we left our last free Red Bull in the fridge.

As a proud Canadian, I always feel like I should make more of an effort to see Canadian films, so of course I had to add Atom Egoyan's latest to our schedule. But you know what I wish? That seeing Canadian movies didn't feel like such an effort. That I had more reasons to want to see a movie than the fact that it's Canadian (you know, like a plot I care about). It's not easy making films here in Canada, simply because the medium is expensive in nature. So filmmakers have learned to replace things that they can't afford with uniqueness, but the result is that his films, and many of the acclaimed films in Canadian cinema, are more arty than enjoyable, or simply weird. Adoration isn't as bizarre as some, but it did rely on a certain unusualness that's common in Canadian films (even if it isn't all that common in Canadian life). Mostly, it's a fairly blah examination of loss that probably would've been more effective if it didn't choke on Egoyan's attempts at politics. It's too bad. If he focused a little more on connecting us with the characters and less on his standard "nothing is as it seems" (a theme he admitted himself while introducing the screening), he might've achieved something truly profound. Instead, he ended up with something, well, Canadian.

Verdict: Meh - Not a bad film, but I can't think of a single reason to recommend it either. It's not good enough to justify its stately pacing.

One Week

Another Canadian film, but one with much smaller ambitions than Egoyan's, One Week is director Michael McGowan's ode to Canada, following Ben (Joshua Jackson), a young man who sets out on a trip across Canada on a motorcycle after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. As someone who has done a cross-Canada trip of his own (albeit not on a motorcycle, but I did go coast-to-coast, unlike Ben who only went from Toronto to Vancouver), you'd think I'd have felt a connection to this film, but mostly, I thought it sucked. The film was basically the final montage of Elizabethtown (which was probably the worst part of a heavily flawed film), transported north and stretched out over an hour. A loosely assembled collection of iconic Canadian road images, set to a Canadian rock soundtrack, and pieced together with poorly written, intrusive narration by Campbell Scott. The film felt like McGowan made a list of Canadian things he wanted to show in a movie (perhaps after seeing one of those list specials on CBC), then found ways to cram them into his film, be it the Sudbury nickle, the Wah-Wah Goose, Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire, Banff, Drumheller, the Stanley Cup, or the Northern Lights (which I'm not exactly sure how he was able to see, given that it seemed that he was taking a southernly route). I agree with McGowan that Canada deserves its own great road movie, but unfortunately, we're still waiting.

Verdict: Fail - The film had nothing profound to say either about the Canadian identity or the human spirit.

At this point, the last thing the world needs is another WWII Nazi movie, so if you're going to produce one, it's best to have something new to offer. Unfortunately, Vicente Amorim's Good (adapted from the C.P. Taylor play of the same name) does not, and instead offers the same old, indifferently-directed, middlebrow melodrama that we've seen many times. I'm starting to believe that plays make for awful movies, unless the director is willing to completely rework the script and settings to better fit the change in medium, because I'm not sure I've ever seen a non-musical adaptation from the stage that works as a movie. In any case, not even the talents of Viggo Mortensen or Jason Isaacs could salvage this typical, dull yarn (although Isaacs does manage to bring life to his scenes), so stay away (as I'm sure most of you would have already).

Verdict: Fail - I've been fighting this whole write-up to avoid making a pun based on the title, so I best quit while I'm ahead.

Tomorrow: Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut, Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel meet cute, and we finally see that Zac Efron dude I've been hearing so much about. Plus, we have to try and make another change to our schedule (and hopefully not for a movie we end up skipping anyway).

Llega un nuevo mes y por la ventana de los estrenos se nos cuela un vientecillo fresco, higiénico, rejuvenecedor, que viene a llevarse los pestilentes aromas de esas películas que, a fuerza de languidecer en la cartelera, han acabado pudriéndose sin que nadie les prestara atención. ¿Carne de Oscar? Es pronto para decirlo. Pero sí films dignos y sabrosos:

-El tren de las 3:10: Russel Crowe, Christian Bale (¡este señor no para!), Peter Fonda (de verdad) y Ben Foster en el remake de todo un clásico del western, con James Mangold detrás de las cámaras; personalmente, no veo el momento de presenciar el cara a cara entre el neozelandés y el británico, del que prometen saltar chispas; un forajido, el hombre que debe apresarlo, un tren que sale, como dice el título, a las 3:10 para Yuma... vamos, que la cosa no puede prometer más; cine de calidad, por fin, que ya era hora.

-Che, el argentino: ahora Steven Soderbergh se nos monta un díptico sobre la revolución cubana del que esta es su primera entrega; quienes acudan a la sala para presenciar un Traffic "caribeño", seguramente se llevarán una decepción al encontrarse con un producto bastante más denso; lo mejor es dejarse cautivar por la asombrosa caracterización de Benicio del Toro, al que no extrañaría ver paseándose por la alfombra roja el año que viene, candidatura bajo el brazo a Mejor Actor.

-Viaje al centro de la tierra: al menos, promete ser entretenida; Brendan Fraser, una auténtica paradoja, al ser el héroe más "rellenito", por ser suave, que recuerda la historia del cine, se nos embarca en otra de carreras, saltos y mucha adrenalina, con más filtro infantil todavía que La Momia, para revisar todo un clasicazo de Julio Verne; a los enanos les encantará.

-La Isla de Nim: basada en un éxito editorial, reúne a Jodie Foster (ay, Jodie, quién te ha visto y quién te ve), Abigail Breslin (sí, la cría de Pequeña Miss Sunshine, donde se comía la pantalla) y Gerald Butler, prota de 300 que a este punto presentará también el telediario, y si no al tiempo, que este señor, desde su pelotazo espartano, esta que no para; una isla, mucha fantasía... otra buena opción para los pequeños.

-Uranya: comedia griega protagonizada por la italiana Maria Grazia Cucinotta; no parece que vaya a tener un gran tirón.

-La conjura de El Escorial: él es Jason Isaacs (Malfoy senior en Harry Potter) y ella Julia Ormond (tuvo su momento en los 90: véase Sabrina), pero el resto son españoles (Puigcorbé, arg), incluido el director, Antonio Del Real; sudor frío bajando por la espina dorsal...

Por fin viernes. En unas horas nos vamos de fin de semana y qué mejor plan para esta noche que una buena cena con amigos y un cine. Las opciones son jugosas esta semana, camaradas...

Pero no todo saldrá bien y la violencia no tardará en aparecer. Se inicia una dramática lucha psicológica entre ambos hombres mientras los compañeros del forajido intentan liberarle. Remake del clásico "El tren de las 3:10" de 1957, dirigida por Delmer Daves y protagonizada por Glenn Ford.

¿Cómo le ponemos al niño?: Inocencio, faltaría más. Porque hay que ser muy inocente ( o tener pasta de sobra) para ir a ver esta peli al cine, y no precisamente porque sea mala. Un año de retraso entre el estreno americano y el español, ahí es nada. El que no la haya visto ya en dvd es porque no le ha dado la gana.

El ataque no tuvo éxito y Castro pasó dos años en la cárcel antes de ir al exilio en México. Entre tanto, un joven idealista argentino llamado Ernesto Guevara se había involucrado en la actividad política de Guatemala. En 1954, cuando el gobierno legítimo de Jacobo Álvarez fue depuesto por una operación militar organizada por la CIA, Guevara escapó a México. Un conocido de Guatemala le puso en contacto con un grupo de revolucionarios cubanos en el exilio. El 13 de julio de 1955 tuvo lugar un evento silencioso pero con grandes repercusiones en la historia de la Revolución Cubana. En un humilde apartamento de la ciudad de México, se conocieron Ernesto Guevara y Fidel Castro, presentados por Raúl Castro, el hermano pequeño de Fidel. Guevara se alistó inmediatamente en una misión de guerrilla destinada a derrocar al dictador cubano. Los cubanos apodaron al joven rebelde "Che", una conocida expresión argentina. El 26 de noviembre de 1956, Fidel Castro navegó a Cuba con ochenta rebeldes, de los que sólo sobrevivieron doce. Uno de ellos era el Che, que se había unido al grupo como médico acompañante. El Che se familiarizó rápidamente con el arte de la guerra de guerrillas y demostró ser un combatiente indispensable. Se lanzó de lleno al conflicto y recibió el apoyo de sus camaradas y del pueblo cubano. La película termina en los albores del Año Nuevo de 1959, con el Che celebrando la victoria revolucionaria en Santa Clara. Los rebeldes habían derrocado a Batista.

¿Cómo le ponemos al niño?: Pues Oscar, evidentemente. Tan sólo tenéis que echarle un vistazo al tráiler para ver que lo han montado (musiquita emotiva incluida) para que el regreso de Soderbergh vaya de cabeza a la próxima ceremonia de los premios. Desde luego, la caracterización de Benicio del Toro y las masas que mueve un personaje como el Che hacen de esta peli el estreno de la semana.

¿Cómo le ponemos al niño?: Goya, cómo no, porque estoy seguro que más de uno le caerá en la próxima ceremonia de los premios del cine español. Personalmente no espero nada de esta producción y la temática no es de mis preferidas. Me la reservo para cuando salga en dvd, que la vida está muy cara.

Hasta el talento de Abigail Breslin está por encima de este tipo de productos. En fin, todos tendrán letras de yate que pagar...

¿Cómo le ponemos al niño?: Julio, aunque apuesto a que Verne volvería a meterse en la tumba si viera esta adaptación de su obra. Brendan Fraser vuelve con otro producto familiar mientras 'La Momia 3' aún colea en nuestras carteleras, lo que no sirve de mucho aval para pagar la entrada de esta nueva aventura "con niño", por mucho que también la exhiban en 3D.

Si mi afición al cine es grande, hay otra que le va a la zaga, y es la lectura. En ella, como con el cine, no me he centrado nunca en tan sólo en unos determinados campos o autores, si no que siempre abro mis horizontes a nuevos nombres y a nuevos temas. Pero hay uno que siempre me ha atraído, y del que suelo leer algo, aunque no sean más que un par de títulos al año: La novela histórica.

Dentro de ella, hay una tendencia que me lleva a leer sobre el antiguo Egipto, y la Roma de la antigüedad. Me atrae ese mundo ya tan remoto para nosotros, y aunque sé, que sobre todo, en lo relacionado con Egipto, lo que leo es fruto de la imaginación del autor, y lo más seguro ni parecido a lo que ocurrió en realidad, aprecio cuando un libro está bien documentado y la historia que relata se trata de forma seria y creíble.

Pero cuando se lee mucho, no lees solamente lo que te resulta más atractivo, y van desfilando por delante de tus ojos otras historias más cercanas ya en el tiempo. Historias que relatan acontecimientos o vidas de personajes que tuvieron influencia en nuestro futuro, y que por eso precisamente han pasado a la historia y siempre habrá alguien que escriba sobre ellos.

Este largo preámbulo, para pasar a hablar de “La conjura de el Escorial”, era necesario para al menos poneros en situación de lo que me gustaría encontrar en la película.

El film se centra en unos hechos ocurridos durante el reinado de Felipe II, nieto de los Reyes Católicos, y bajo cuyo mandato se construyó el Monasterio de San Lorenzo de el Escorial, que le sirvió durante años de morada, hasta su fallecimiento en 1598.

Felipe II rige el destino de la España del renacimiento, y de un imperio heredado de su padre Carlos I de España (V de Alemania), del que se dice que su extensión es tanta que “nunca se pone el sol”, desde el Monasterio del Escorial. Su hermano bastardo, Don Juan de Austria, al que ha reconocido como miembro de la familia real, pero que nunca ha sido considerado infante de España, ni recibido el tratamiento de “Alteza”, ha sofocado entre los años 1569 y 1571 la “Rebelión de las Alpujarras” (moriscos que se veían expulsados de España, si no renegaban totalmente de sus creencias y costumbres), y logrado el triunfo sobre los turcos en la batalla naval del golfo de Lepanto, el día 7 de octubre de 1571. Juan de Austria, entre los años que van hacia finales de los 70, ambiciona reino propio, y por dos ocasiones, su hermano se lo ha denegado. En 1578, dos ejércitos aliados, uno francés, y otro subvencionado por Isabel I de Inglaterra, invaden el Flandes español, y Don Juan, necesitado de dinero y de hombres, pide a su secretario personal Luis Escobedo que se encuentra en España, que interceda ante el rey para que le envíe ayuda, pero este es asesinado en la noche del 31 de marzo de 1578, después de haber sufrido antes un intento de envenenamiento.

De la conspiración que desemboca en la muerte de Escobedo, es acusado y declarado culpable, Antonio Pérez, el ambicioso secretario de Felipe II, y cómplice de estos hechos, la princesa de Éboli, su supuesta amante, y amiga personal del rey desde hace años.

He leído un par de versiones novelizadas de esta historia, que me llevaron luego a leer algo más fiel históricamente. Pasados 430 años de lo ocurrido, es difícil encontrar una documentación digna de crédito. La historia, dependiendo del momento, y de las ideas políticas del autor, se escribe de una u otra manera, pero todo parece indicar, que Felipe II estuvo detrás de la conspiración en la que murió Escobedo, temiendo que la ambición de su hermano, con la ayuda conseguida, se lanzase a la invasión de Inglaterra que soñaba, y casase con María Estuardo o bien volviese su vista a España, y le disputase el trono.

Dudosa es también la relación amorosa que se atribuye a Pérez con la princesa de Éboli.

Felipe II, cuya figura también ha sido tratada desde distintos ángulos por la historia (seguidores y detractores), no dejó nada que pudiera aclarar estos acontecimientos. De hecho, se negó a que ningún historiador escribiera su biografía en vida, y mando destruir todos sus archivos y correspondencia cuando el muriera, lo que se llevó a cabo.

La película narra pues estos hechos puntuales, y por lo que he leído en su sinopsis, nada me indica que se involucre al rey.

Espero de ella, que al menos tenga un guión sólido, y que los personajes y situaciones mantengan un rigor histórico, y que no se centre en los devaneos amorosos de Antonio Pérez y la princesa, como ocurría en una de las novelas que tuve la nefasta idea de leer.

A Antonio Pérez lo encarna en la película dirigida por Antonio del Real, Jason Isaacs (actor británico que aparecía en el papel de “malo” en “El patriota” (2000), de Roland Emmerich), del que he leído una declaración que al menos resulta chocante: Asegura haberse enterado ahora, en el rodaje de la película, de que España hace poco mas de cuatro siglos era un Imperio, porque en Inglaterra no se da a conocer en las escuelas nada sobre la historia de nuestro país. (Sin comentarios).

Julia Ormond es la Princesa de Éboli, (mujer “retratada” como tuerta, pero de gran belleza, por unos, y fea y bizca por otros). Juanjo Puigcorbé, da vida a Felipe II, Joaquim de Almeida, es Juan Escobedo, y Jürgen Prochnov da vida a otro de los personajes principales de la trama: Espinosa (no le veo a Prochnov mucha pinta de español…)

Lo dicho, el viernes próximo en nuestras pantallas. El viernes no, porque tengo el fin de semana ocupado en otros menesteres, pero a la siguiente semana iré al cine a verla. No espero mucho, y quizás sea mejor para no decepcionarme. ¿O talvez me encuentre con una obra muy digna?

Actor Jason Isaacs has given a new interview where he confirms again he will return as Death Eater Lucius Malfoy in the film version (s) of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. (...)

Jason also admits he had not read "Deathly Hallows" before learning that his character would return, but did admit again that he spoke with author J.K. Rowling before the publication, begging for Lucius to get out of prison after book five. Quotage:

"Leave No Man Behind."

Black Hawk Down happens to be one of my favorite movies. People are usually floored by this because A, I'm a girl, and B, most people find it depressing. I don't. I see it as horrific, yet inspiring. These guys were put in an insane position under the worst circumstances and most made it out alive - because they trusted and fought for each other [in the end 18 lost their lives]. I had read the book a few times before the movie came out, so it was a little confusing for me, because the movie combines certain characters [wrong word for it, since this is a true story, but you know what I mean] into one - like Ewan McGregor's character, Grimes. He's the amalgamation of 2 actual guys. And some of the details were changed, like where the first Black Hawk crashed. Even still, the movie is very well done and true to the book, but is fictionalized a bit so it flows better in the short time they have to tell the story...

I've also read that a lot of veterans who've seen the movie say it's as real as it can get to actually being there, visually. It's a war movie, so there is gore, but it's not overdone. Black Hawk Down is the story of modern urban warfare and the near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993 involving 100 army rangers who repel from their Black Hawks into a hostile Mogadishu in the middle of the day to apprehend a warlord's top 2 lieutenants, in an effort to stop the terrorism plaguing the region [the warlords were getting rich as they stole food from humanitarian efforts, while everyone else starved to death].

The mission quickly goes awry due to a number of factors, essentially creating the 'perfect storm' and stranding most of the men in the city after one of their Black Hawks is shot down and lands in a tough to reach section of the city. Because nobody is left behind, they have to change strategies and divert resources to get to the downed crew while the Somalies build makeshift barricades all around the city, making navigation almost impossible. Everyone joins the battle, including women and children, so the guys can never let their guard down. What follows is the most intense 24 hours as the rangers and deltas who drop in to help, fight for their lives and the lives of their fallen comrads. 

For the acting, the effects and realism, and to the justice the movie does for the story, Black Hawk Down is a 4 out of 5 for me.

Synopsis

In 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force were set to participate in an operation in Somalia that fell to pieces.  The soldiers were sent to abduct two leaders of an evil Warlord that had been starving the people of Somalia.  The precarious fall of one soldier initiated a series of many events gone terribly wrong.  With the city militia closing in on them and two Black Hawk Choppers having crashed, it’s up to the men on the ground to secure the fallen choppers and somehow stay alive as well.

Black Hawk Down offers a very profound view to an event that really transpired in Somalia during the Clinton administration.  It clearly sets itself apart from other War films or epics by short-cutting back and forth between the individual experiences of the men during this surmountable mission gone bad.  One RPG and one mans decent to the ground began a series of events that could not be stopped by any man or higher power.

There is undoubtedly a series of amazing action sequences that attempt to mirror the tale written by Mark Bowden in his novel.  The large scope of the battle is not delved into, but the individual battles are accounted for with great detail. 

The brutality of war, the violence of war has all been portrayed before, but not in the way that Ridley Scott shot this film.  It almost felt more documentary at times, connecting the viewer directly to the military men you were focused on.

In situations like these every man is a hero in their own way.  They all are putting their lives on the line to get the job done.  Whether that job is applauded by politics and the world alike is not up for judgement, because every single one of those men are willing to die for each other and for the integrity of the mission.  The camaraderie of the military, the humanity for each other alone, was the most powerful message I received from Black Hawk Down.  In the most dire of circumstances we do not leave our people behind, and many men lost their lives for that mantra.

By the end of the film you don’t ask yourself if it was worth it, you don’t reflect on the political aspect of the situation, nor do you reflect on the aspect of the battle and war itself.  You simply think about the men.  It’s as complicated and simple as that.

There were some serious stand out roles in this motion picture, in particularly Eric Bana’s portrayal of “Hoot”, the man from Delta Force that just kept going.  His low key attitude towards the situation at hand separated him from a man who was there trying to fulfill his mission, to what I call a real modern warrior.  He didn’t love what he did, but he did it because it was necessary.  It was an outstanding performance.  Ewan McGreggor was excellent as usual, but playing the “desk guy” who really rose to the occasion made his portrayal of Grimes really something tangible.  Jason Isaacs is an actor that’s been in just about everything, but upon a third viewing of Black Hawk Down I finally connected his character with the actor.  He was so solid and far from any other role I’d seen him play, I’d forgotten who he was and believed him as Steele.  All the actors gave their performance a 100% genuine delivery and that made the film even more authentic.

Ratings and Suggestions

This is a very violent and disturbing movie to watch.  It will sit with you for hours, maybe even days after festering in your mind, possibly touching you in ways you didn’t know a movie could.  It certainly isn’t a film everyone could handle, or something to be viewed by children, but it’s definitely a film that I would recommend everyone to see, and whether or not you agree with the policies of our military or government, you can at least appreciate the sacrifices these men make every day.  Stories like Black Hawk Down that you don’t necessary hear about in the news or on CNN.  Every one of those men and women are heroes.

Sitting here in Carlingford, County Louth on a quiet evening in charge of sleeping children above, with my other half out with some of her dozens of cousins on the other side of Carlingford Lough in Rostrevor, County Down, with some godawful pseudo-american chatshow on RTE1 (Tubirdy Tonight - the name captures the height of shite it represents - a charmless, dull host behind a reproduction antique desk on the other side of which sits a fake nobody guest (the renowned Deirdre O'Kane?) with a D4 tango tan behind which are wooden window panes giving on to a fake cityscape unlike any part of Dublin I've ever seen, a lifeless photo devoid of dynamism or truth) and some two-bit boxing match on RTE2 with a ringside commentator with huge arched eyebrows and a forehead like the Mekon - jaysis, we're blessed with our public service broadcasting back in Blighty, Ireland has much to offer the world but telly isn't among its riches - I flick to a movie on Ulster TV, Joe Wright's recent iteration of Pride and Prejudice with Ikea Knightley, as Mark Kermode (who popped up earlier this evening on the Culture Show) calls her on his weekly movie review show on Radio 5 with Simon Mayo. (How's that, heavenly muse, for a Miltonian sentence?)

From this movie, which has somehow lost its appeal on a second, small-screen viewing, I drift off to an altogether more engaging gathering than the one before me with the dreadful Mr Collins showing off his lightness of foot. The other night I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Darcy himself, Matthew Macfadyen, and his charming wife Keeley Hawes (Cock and Bull Story, Ashes to Ashes, Spooks, The Bank Job) at the RTS Production Awards where he very deservingly won the best actor award for the excellent Secret Life in which he portrays a recently released paedophile striving for rehabilitation. This Channel 4 commission, written and (first-time) directed by Rowan Joffe (28 Weeks Later, Gas Attack), culminates in an astonishing scene in a fairground where the struggling ex-con brings his handsome Darcy-like features and non-Darcy-like charm to bear on an underage girl. Will he or won't he? It's painfully impossible to call.

I watched the drama as one of the twenty hours I went though as a judge in the Scriptwriter - Drama category. For me it was the best film, alongside Mark O'Rowe's Boy A, but my fellow judges, the likes of Simon Cellan Jones (Cracker, The Trial of Tony Blair) and Kudos' Derek Wax (Sex Traffic), though they admired it, were less keen. The BBC's adapted screenplay for Mrs Gaskell's Cranford eventually won the category. Brilliantly crafted of course and a wonderful cast to deliver the lines with the greatest of expertise - but not brave in the Channel 4 way of Secret Life and Boy A. Too much Pride and Prejudice, too little Shameless for me.

I'd been introduced to the self-effacing (for such a tall man) Matthew Macfadyen by Jason Isaacs, who I hadn't seen for some twenty years. On occasion we traveled together to school on the bus when he was a big boy and I an insignificant underling. I remember him being warm and open - most bigger boys just ignored you at best. He remembered himself as being unpleasant at that age and "driven by fear". Mark Kermode - who says hallo to Jason Isaacs and David Morrissey every week on the aforementioned review programme - recalls Jason (who was in the same year as him) as very cool and collected. Jason recalls Mark as the cool one to be looked up to with his quiff and rockabilly persona. Which all goes to show the gulf between our perception of ourselves and how we actually come across to others, as well as the role self-confidence and fear plays in our formative years and beyond. Darcy has just walked out suddenly on a confused Elizabeth for just such reasons.

It was lovely catching up with Jason after so long, last time we met he was still in Capital City with Clive Owen et al. [Correction - see comment below: Make that Douglas Hodge - Clive Owen was in Chancer which aired the same year with Peter Vaughan and Leslie Phillips, written by Tony Grounds.] Since then he's been to Hollywood (Mel Gibson's The Patriot, Armageddon, Harry Potter, etc.) and back (to be able to raise his daughters properly) and the night of the RTS was playing Harry H Corbett in The Curse of Steptoe and Son on BBC4 to enthusiastic reviews. We chatted about the urban myth that was the Edgware Walker (as brought to the screen by the maverick Lee Kern), about mutual schoolmates including the legendary Laurence Gould, broader than he was tall, famous for launching two skinheads down the stairs at Stanmore Station, and that was another subject of conversation, the neo-nazi violence of the mid-70s which Jason recalls much more vividly than I can. My first gig was the Tom Robinson Band at the Hammersmith Odeon - TRB introduced me to Anti-Nazi League activism, as well as the notion of gay rights - but it was all a bit theoretical for me. It seems like the couple of years age gap between us made it all much more real for Jason. He also spoke insightfully about his own craft. Producer Vadim Jean (Leon the Pig Farmer, Terry Pratchett's Hogfather) joined us for that bit of the convo - he held up Gene Hackman as one of the most consistently excellent screen actors. Watching Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennett does make you think about consistency - the man from Mash and Klute is also the winner of the all-time worst accent award for his role in Goldcrest's disasterous Revolution. But in the end it's all just make-believe. Jason's older brother, a doctor, it turns out saved a man's life by performing an emergency tracheotomy (with a biro!) on a plane heading to North Africa. In the light of that, Lydia running off with the perfidious Wickham seems to pale into insignificance.

A few years ago I was filming in Northern Ireland with Eddie McCaffery of Joose TV (then Emerald Productions) and Roddy Gibson (now a TV specialist course director at Middlesex Uni). We had a break from filming and headed up to Horn Head in Donegal. Whilst walking out on the bog of the headland we came across an older man collapsed with blood coming from his mouth, his distraught sister kneeling at his side. The three of us had recently spent weeks in an edit suite cutting a scene involving first aid and so were quite up on our life-saving. We did all the right stuff, got blood all over Roddy's new jacket which served to cushion the old fella's head, ended up carrying the prone body (surprisingly heavy) by stretcher back up off the bog to the ambulance which took him to Letterkenny hospital. We never heard a word from the man or his sister. Jason's brother was given an airline voucher for £30 for his trouble. Elizabeth Bennett may be struggling a bit with her values here but those are both seriously out of whack. Jason's brother was, however, invited to his emergency patient's subsequent wedding where he came to see for himself what the act meant to the young man's parents. Lady Catherine de Burgh (Judi Dench, who also featured in Cranford) has just been shown the door by the feisty Elizabeth, a frock-coated Matthew Macfadyen is striding through the mist, so wedding bells are just around the corner now as things trundle to their happy ending.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1/Part 2, and The Hobbit. ( NOTE: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Stardust and The Golden Compass are also "special" to me they just are not on the same level)

I have been patiently awaiting these movies even before they were EVER set to be made. As soon as I saw the first LOTR movie I said "They better make the Hobbit". As soon as I saw the first Harry Potter movie I was hooked and have been following it ever since.

I have so much hope and excitement stored for these movies. I cannot believe I still have until November for HP Yr 6, Until the end of 2010 for The Hobbit and HP yr 7 part 1, and then the beginning of 2011 for HP Yr 7 part 2..... OMG so much can happen in that amount of time. I HATE being left to sit and wonder and wait. I really hope some trailers come out soon. I would even be fine with a teaser trailer right about now. I am so worked up about seeing these movies that I even went to youtube and watched the Fan made trailers...UGH!

I do not know about any of the rest of you but sometimes movies take over my heart and soul and I find no peace until I get closure (by getting to watch the movie). It ends up starting all over again though after I watch the movie in the theater until I get to buy it on DVD. Speaking of DVDs, they better release my "special" ones on Blu-ray!
