A friend wants to go vegetarian. I have advised her not to go by PETA's terms, but I'm not sure that she understands the gravity of the situation, and how labeled she will ultimately be if she does choose that path with her animal rights journey.

Here's my thing. I watched Earthlings with her yesterday, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, yeah yeah. Many of the video clips in the film were reminders of just why I chose to go vegetarian in the first place. And now that I look back at them, I wonder why I didn't just go vegan from the start. A lot of the clips were new, especially those pertaining to the dairy industry. But I wonder how someone can watch all that, listening to Joaquin's eerie voice, and seriously not immediately think, "I need to go vegan." I mean, vegetarianism is a serious jump for some. But Earthlings covers everything involving animal use, from Pets to Food, Clothing, Entertainment, and Research. There's no room for argument. Once you've seen it, you have virtually no excuse in the whole world. Pescetarians have no good reason as to why they eat fish. You have no backing behind your leather belts. And "kosher?" Come on, America is capitalist. Capitalism treats animals as resources, as things. And do you really expect capitalists to regard things with any respect, even relating to any religion (ya, even Christianity)?

So I'm saying watch it at your own risk for enlightenment, but watch it anyway. And some of you (Travis) will disagree with me. Some of you will think I'm being an extreme terrorist, but when coupled with the narrative, I think this provides essential information. And I'm not really one for handing out extremely graphic animal rights videos. But when you hear those screams, when you picture all the organs as though they're hanging from your dying best friend or beloved cat just like they did from that "kosher" cow, you have to pay attention. When you consider the agony of the dolphins being separated from their kin and see the schoolchildren walking by unperturbed as these dolphins are slaughtered, you've got to wonder what's wrong with us. We don't want to know what goes into our food, our foolish whims, but for the record, we're already desensitized anyway.

Oh, and also, you can't help but wonder what kind of a life your cat led before you. And I guess you'll never know, either. You'd just like to imagine it was good, or that you saved her.

For the record, I've known and loved Babygrrl since she was born. For the record, the cats I live with at home are spayed.

I am almost becoming a vegetarian…almost. After watching the documentary “Earthlings

I am almost becoming a vegetarian...almost. After watching the documentary "Earthlings" I felt so sick to my stomach. I once saw a documentary on China where they would get cats and dogs and dip them in hot vats of water and skin them alive.

Someone from my company went to China recently (to show them how to make our units-which makes no sense to me) and had dinner with some of the workers at a restaurant. They were serving fresh monkey brains. What they do is cut half of the monkey's scull so that the brain is exposed. Then they put the monkey through a hole in the middle of the table and people go and pick of pieces of the brain and eat it (mind you the monkey is still alive). To me, that is a crime against nature. How would they like to be eaten alive? China has a lot of human rights violations but what about animal rights? I haven't eaten meat in two days.

But what is the vegetarian diet consist of? Will I be deprived of eggs or milk products? Can I still eat fish? I definitely do NOT want to eat chicken, beef or pork now. It just broke my heart to see animals being slaughtered in such inhumane ways. Inadvertinely, I have done this to animals by consuming them. More people should watch the documentary. It doesn't mean you have to become a vegetarian but it will change the way you look at meat.

Meat is actually harder for our bodies to digest. Mind you some vegetables are hard to digest as well (and can make you gassy).

So for now, I am sticking to my noodles at lunch and stir fry for dinner. I've got to go Google vegatarian meals...

By Hayley Trowbridge

This review contains spoilers.

Compelling, poignant, heart wrenching - James Mangold's Walk the Line is a polished yet endearing piece of mainstream cinema.

Co-writer and director, Mangold, sets about chronologically telling the story of music icon, Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix). Beginning with the tragedies of his childhood that shaped his misguided but successful future and culminating with Cash overcoming his demons through his enduring friendship and ultimate relationship with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), Walk the Line transcends its bio-pic origins and instead becomes one of the most memorable love stories of contemporary cinema. Mangold has created a film that is not just about Cash, but about Carter.

This is not to say that the film falls flat on its face by not delivering the Johnny Cash story we all wanted - the music, the drugs, the tragic childhood, the lifestyle, because it does and delivers them in an accomplished fashion. Underpinning these elements and holding them together, giving them substance and context is the Cash/Carter dynamic which sets this film apart from other more mundane bio-pics of its day, most notably Ray (Taylor Hackford, 2004).

The onscreen chemistry and affection between Cash and Carter is credible and is brought about by expertly delivered performances by Pheonix and Witherspoon. Pheonix walks the narrow line between the mimicry of a good tribute act and the talent of an actor who walks, talks and has the same mannerisms that characterised Cash, yet still managing to bring something original to the performance as to not make it a simple aping. Pheonix brings a warmth to Cash that develops throughout the film and leaves the audience with no other option than to engage with, relate to or fall in love with a junked-up, slightly misogynistic, wealthy musician when it is his estranged wife, Vivian Cash (Ginnifer Goodwin), with whom the audience should probably be sympathising with.

Similarly, the film does not portray June Carter in a negative light even though she has committed to the classic Hollywood narrative sins of being a divorcee and getting involved with a married man. Instead Carter comes off more admirable that Cash and it is Witherspoon's performance that makes Carter so likeable. From the enchanting smile to nailing the ‘average girl done good' sentiment, Witherspoon creates a memorable and moving re-enactment of Carter. With my personal previous experience of Witherspoon being her Legally Blonde days I have to say that I now see her in a new light - as a diverse and talented actress. Girl done good.

With the infectious life story of Cash, a pre-existing, remarkable wealth of soundtrack material at his finger tips, two talented and beautiful lead performers, and with a substantial budget funding a more than adequate crew, Mangold was almost certainly onto a commercial winner with Walk the Line. But what Mangold manages is much more than that. With talented direction he provoked outstanding performances that gripped the audience and made Walk the Line one of the triumphs of contemporary mainstream cinema. For this I will forgive the sledgehammer approach to wedging the ways in which Cash's songs were written into the script.

9/10 - We Own the Night, heter filmen om någon undrar.

Back then, in the year of 2004, I also Owned the Night. Now a days I´ve become a dayworker, stucked behind a desk. Some say thats a careermovement. Maybe so, but sometimes I do miss the old times.

Plejset rekommenderas starkt.

+ We Own the Night.

Det är... vägarbeten all over the entire city.

Nighters all, thanks for reading.

Essentially - "We Own the Night" - is a cop film.

But, unlike the others in the genre that harp about honor and duty, this little gem focuses more on "family".

Apparently, it was booed at the Cannes Film Festival.

But, I liked it!

It's kind-of an intimate tale about a young man who must make a troubling decision when his wild lifestyle puts his father and brother in harm's way.

Joaquin Phoenix is the manager of a trendy dance club, who thrives on the adrenalin-rush of the night life, high-energy music, and the thrill of rubbing shoulders with an exotic mix of dangerous low-life personalities.

The path of least resistance, also appeals to the independent nature of the young man, too.

Occasionally, he snorts a whiff of cocaine and engages in a little wild sex.

Yeah, ignorance is bliss.

His comfortable carefree existence is interrupted one evening when a Machiavellian drug dealer saunters into the club and starts to shake up the status quo.

The scumbag attracts so much attention, in fact, that the club becomes the focus of a drug investigation instigated by Phoenix's brother (Mark Wahlberg)and headed up by their father (Robert Duvall).

When the brothers' heads start to butt - and Wahlberg's character ends up seriously injured after a professional hit by the underworld - Phoenix is compelled to reevaluate his lifestyle.

In the film - "The Departed" - I found Wahlberg's acting a little over the top and out-of-sync with the other seasoned actors he played against.

Here, the studly actor has found a proper balance which works.

Not an exceptional bit of acting, but it satisfies.

As usual, Robert Duvall turns in a quality performance.

However, when roles in films overlap a little, there are bound to be some repetitions.

Thus, his crusty portrayal of the Police Chief amounts to the - same old same old - I'm afraid.

Nothing to write home about.

In contrast, Phoenix turns in a stunning performance which steals the show!

His performance is not only nuanced, but a multi-faceted characterization, which rivets the audience.

Phoenix's acting is a revelation with touches of brilliance.

When actors talk about the "method" - realistically portraying an emotion and crafting a seamless performance - this is was what they are talking about.

Having succeeded in fleshing out his character - Phoenix is subsequently able to touch, mesmerize, and render a haunting lasting impression.

The film was directed by James Gray, who carved a bit of a niche for himself in the industry, with projects like "Little Odessa" and "The Yards".

In this instant case, the direction is a little pedestrian.

But, the cinematography is rich and impacts the eye; enough so, that the audience remains connected to the action.

Yes, there's plenty of that, but not in a distracting exploitative way.

"We Own the Night" is not innovative or great filmmaking.

But, the movie is entertaining, none-the-less.

A good popcorn movie to cuddle up at home with on a dark stormy night.

1970 - 1993

Conta Comigo (Rob Reiner, 1986)

Let’s jump the gun for a minute here. Yes, yes, yes this is definitely the wrong time to enter

Let's jump the gun for a minute here. Yes, yes, yes this is definitely the wrong time to entertain such thoughts, especially when there are 12 games remaining in the season. This time of year 12 games is a lifetime - anything can happen.

But then again it's kind of what we do when we talk about sports. We love to speculate and allow our minds to wander while simultaneously second-guessing along with the action on the field.

So here it is:

What would happen if the Phillies played the Mets in the NLCS?

Hey, it could happen.

If I had to guess I'd say Shea Stadium and Citizens Bank Park would morph into European soccer stadiums for a Phillies-Mets NLCS. Fans would sing, chant, dance, cry and fight - and that would just be in the parking lot before the game. On the field, the action would resemble the final showdown between Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in the movie, Gladiator. At the very least it could reach a fever pitch in very much the same manner as the 2003 ALCS when Pedro Martinez tossed 70-year-old coach Don Zimmer to the ground as if he were a bag of leaves.

This time around Pedro is with the Mets, though it's highly unlikely that he would pick a fight with any member of the Phillies' staff. Pedro is better suited to mix it up with 70-year-old coaches.

Nevertheless, just the thought of a matchup between the Phillies and the Mets in the NLCS is enough to put a smirk on my face. Plus, it means one last trip to Shea...

Yay!

If the season were to end today, the Phillies would travel to Chicago to face the Cubs in the NLDS, while the Mets would host the Dodgers. For the Phillies, the end-of-the-season pitching matchups point to Brett Myers in Game 1, Jamie Moyer in Game 2 and Cole Hamels in Game 3. That's certainly the way manager Charlie Manuel wants it to play out.

Again, there is a long way to go. Starting on Tuesday night the Phillies have three games in Atlanta followed by three next weekend in Florida. After sweeping the Brewers in four straight, the Phillies finally have that little extra bounce back in their steps.

"I really believe that we haven't played the way we're capable of playing," said Pat Burrell, who snapped out of a two-month long slump with the go-ahead RBI single in Sunday's opener to the day-night doubleheader, and then smashed a long homer to left in the nightcap. "We've been pretty inconsistent all year, and to be in the situation we're in, we're fortunate. I think there is better baseball still to be played."

According to the numbers crunchers, the Phillies have a lot more baseball left to play. Ken Roberts, of the web site Sports Club Stats, gives the Phillies a 71.6 percent chance to make the playoffs. However, there are still games remaining to win. At 83-67 it seems as if the Phillies have to win at least 90 games to get into the playoffs.

It just might take 92 wins to get a second straight NL East crown.

Sit tight.

And yes we are totally discounting the Brewers. Unless they relieve manager Ned Yost now for the final push, the Brewers aren't going anywhere.

What is Rome exactly? Is it a giant empire? Is it an ideal? Is it a sign of how a nation can rise and fall? Is it an example of how corrupt men can bring down an entire empire made up of millions of people and multiple countries?

All of these questions are examined in some form or another in the 2000 historical fiction epic Gladiator.

The film follows the story of Maximus (Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man), a Roman general who is a confidant of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris, The Count of Monte Cristo). It begins on the battlefields of Germania, where Maximus leads the Roman army to a glorious victory. The emperor watches and commends Maximus on his success. Soon the emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line) and daughter Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) arrive. Commodus has an incestuous lust for his sister and a desire for his father’s throne. The night before Maximus is supposed to go home, Commodus strangles his father and thereby assumes the title of emperor. He arranges for the murder of Maximus’ family and also finds a way for Maximus to be captured and put into slavery. Soon, Maximus is a crowd-pleasing gladiator fighting alongside fellow captives (including Djimon Hnounsou, Blood Diamond). Commodus decides to hold a festival of games in memory of his father, so Maximus is sent to Rome to fight against the tyranny of the man who killed his dearest friend.

The first thing that sticks out from Gladiator is the remarkable CGI recreations of the great city of Rome, which are supposedly pretty accurate. The Colosseum was recreated physically about 1/3 of the way while the rest is CGI. The epic shot of Commodus arriving in Rome being greeted by members of the Senate is, well, epic.

The acting on the part of Joaquin Phoenix is absolutely brilliant. It was a completely different role that in Walk the Line. Now he is a cruel tyrant, dominating an empire with an iron fist while attempting to coerce his sister into, ugh. Nasty son of a man.

Russell Crowe did receive an Academy Award for his part in this film. And I question the Academy’s decision. It seems to me that he is nothing spectacular in Gladiator. Yes, he is good, but not necessarily worthy of an Oscar. Now, maybe for Cinderella Man, I could see it happening (by the way, Paul Giamatti should have won Best Supporting Actor for that).

The rest of the film was stunning. The fight scenes were excellent, the CGI fantastic, and the acting stunning. I like this film and think it is very well done.

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man) is set to join the ranks of Carmen Electra, Anna Kournikova and Cindy Crawford by releasing a brand new fitness DVD. Yes, you read that right.

"She will show what she does each day to stay slim - mostly pilates, yoga and resistance training."

Wow-wee! So basically: What? Why? Hello no! Keep in mind that the source is British tabloid The Sun, not exactly known for the accuracy of its reports, so this may thankfully not be true. Paltrow will next be seen in the romantic drama Two Lovers opposite Joaquin Phoenix (We Own The Night). The film premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and will be released around the world starting November.

OK, so I was on AOL yesterday, and well I saw something about Free Stuff. Free stuff is always, always, always WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC, and ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Well, one of the websites listed was hulu.com. If you haven't heard of it, this site ROCKS! It's got television shows and movies that you can watch at anytime, for free, LEGALLY ;-) Yes, this site is legal. It probably has something to do with copyright and stuff.

Anyway, the picture quality is actually pretty decent, and although the movie selection isn't huge, it's thorough. There is at least one movie for every person to enjoy. At least that's what I think. Plus, the television collection is up to date. If you miss Jon Stewart one night, you can watch him in the morning without having to download some huge file from Torrent.

Last night, while my roommate slept, I enjoyed one of my favorite period pieces: Quills (which stars Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix). I cried like a baby and loved every moment of it. SOOOO, check it out. I'll be adding it to my links pretty soon, because I know that some of you were probably looking for a site like this.

Well, I'm off to my first day of classes. See ya around.

Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, We Own the Night) sigue consagrándose en papeles de carácter, mientras que el siempre invisible Mark Ruffalo (All the King's Men, Zodiac) nos brinda una actuación magistral.

"Some things belong on paper, others in life. It's a blessed fool who can't tell the difference."

Made my roommates watch "Quills" tonight. Easily one of my favorite films, possibly even in my top three.

A raunchy period piece on the infamous Marquis du Sade, the film stars Geoffrey Rush as the fiery madman, Kate Winslet as his laundry maid ally, Michael Caine as the brutal doctor antagonist, and the oh-so-sexy Joaquin Phoenix as an idealistic abbe who must repress his coursing lust for Winslet's character, Madeleine. [Never has a man of the cloth looked so delicious as Phoenix in that long black robe.]

Considering that the historical Sade lent his namesake to the term "sadism," there are so many ways this movie could have plummeted to a graphic soft porn with gratuitous genitalia waving about like windmills, but no. Instead, the movie tangoes with the evergreen issues of censorship and religion.

And it tackles these trigger words like no other movie I've seen before, openly slashing apart Christianity as if it were wrapping paper. One of my favorite lines has to be when the Marquis sneers at the abbe, "Virgin birth! An entire religion built on an oxymoron!"

The dialogue is razor sharp and delightfully blasphemous (as any film on a crazy fiend should be). And despite its seedy subject matter, it's one of the most intelligently and imaginatively scripted films I can name. I mean sure, sexual references is heaped on this film like fried chicken is heaped on a redneck's plate at Golden Corral. But that's the point, just because Sade's work is craven, it doesn't mean the film has to be.

And I'm always baffled at how the film manages to portray Sade almost as a hero, a representative of artistic expression. To call him an author would be like calling Ron Jeremy an award-winning actor. But he is also a man whose "writing is as involuntary as the beating of his own heart." I can identify with that. It's strange to think of this selfish, self-aggrandizing monster as the poster boy for passion-driven writing. But in the context of his rebellion against censorship, his flippancy is admirable. When Rush galavants atop the cretins' dining table and uproariously shouts, "My writing lives!," I get chills down my spine.

I end this post with the "Quills" trailer [one of my favorites because it includes all the best scenes and music] and another of my many favorite quotes from the film:

Abbe: But we also fall in love, we build cities, we compose symphonies, and we endure. Why not put that in your books as well.

Marquis: It's a fiction, not a moral treatise.

My birthday's not for months but a recent post by Evil Julie piqued my interest. Homer thinks astrology is a bunch of hooey, but I see some of the personality characteristics as being fairly accurate. Here's mine. Do you think it's right?

Your personal ruling planets are Mars and Sun.

The powerful 10th Solar House rulership indicates high preferment and possible fame - if you desire it. The power and warmth of the Sun endows you with a natural feeling of leadership and self importance. People will look to you for guidance, and with the added lunar and Saturnian vibrations, you maintain a calm mental outlook, even when the situation seems hopeless. This really instils confidence in those who look up to you.

Though your successes are assured after a long fight, you will experience hardships as a result of opposition and enemies - who are probably envious of your sterling qualities.
