Back in the olden time when Richard Roeper was still on At the Movies (see April 2008), he said For

Back in the olden time when Richard Roeper was still on At the Movies (see April 2008), he said Forgetting Sarah Marshall had him ready to “get down on my knees and proclaim my undying love for this movie” and that it was an instant classic entering his top fifty comedies of all time. Okay. Since I didn’t catch this one in theatres, this high praise had me excited to check it out on DVD. I liked it (but less than him).

I realize now that I am increasingly out of touch with young actors. I was like an old man watching this movie with all those damned young kids. I was familiar with the lead Jason Segel from his smaller role in another of the Judd Apatow films, Knocked Up, as well as Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd and Bill Hader from a variety of other films, including their Apatow associations. Segel reminds me of a younger Mark Cuban, who I manage to like despite his insanely rich status thanks to his enthusiasm and adventurous spirit, so via the transitive property I found Segel to be a likeable lead. He also wrote the film by the way and I assume wrote those pretty intense Dracula jams.

I basically don’t watch network sitcoms, which may help explain my cluelessness about the cast. I had no idea who the female leads in the film were until I looked them up (Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell). They were adequate but kind of fit into my Drew Barrymore, “I just don’t get it” category. The Stephen Baldwin channeling David Caruso on CSI cameos were a treat.

The Forty Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up DVDs forced viewers into watching the “uncut” versions of the films, which dragged on too long. Fortunately with FSM, you are given the option to watch a longer cut or the theatrical version of the film. Having learned my lesson the hard way from those other Apatow DVDs, I chose the theatrical cut. Thanks for giving me the choice this time; it is a huge improvement.

Random life lesson learned from FSM; Paul Rudd must be skirting the legal definition of dwarfism. I never noticed that before. Balance – I think he is quite good in both dramatic and comedic roles.

Fathers, don't try to be the cool dad and watch this movie with your teenage daughters. Segel's wiener makes two hilarious cameos in the film. Awkward.

Since I brought up At the Movies in this post, I just want to go on record. The re-launched show has been on now for about a month, and it is official. It is fucking terrible! Ben Mankiewicz seems like he just needs a little time to adjust to the show and might be at least passable, if not a little boring. Ben Lyons… Go away! Somebody hire this guy to be on Access Hollywood or the E! network or a personal assistant to Ryan Seacrest or something better suited for him. They have tried to sexy up the shows’ demographic with Ben Lyons, the young “hip” critic, and new horrible features like the Critics Roundup. Ugh. And when the Bens try to get into it, Lyons can’t seem to stop winking at the camera as if to say, “Get it?! We’re disagreeing like the growed-ups do on this show!” His argument is usually something compelling like, “Oh come on!” If the show were able to survive for long enough, which I cannot possibly imagine, it might get more interesting as Mankiewicz begins to lose his ability to hide his contempt for Lyons and starts getting vicious and personal. He should be issued a Taser. I’d watch that show.

I'm crossing my fingers that Roger Ebert will fully recover and return with a new program (despite his affinity for the Garfield movies). It's been on my DVR for 5 years, but as of this week, At the Movies has officially been decommissioned.

Whether it’s about pill safety, anti-piracy or child smothering, public service announcements have

Whether it’s about pill safety, anti-piracy or child smothering, public service announcements have been known to have a bit of a problem resonating with their target audience. Don’t get us wrong, some really great work has been done on behalf of some significant causes. But there have also been some incredible failures.

The reason we bring them up, other than the opportunity for some hilarious clips, is that declareyourself.com has rolled out their own PSA urging people to vote in the upcoming election.

Does this do what a PSA should? Sure. It asks the viewers to make a choice, it gives them responsibility, it tells them what to do and why they should do it. Does it convince those who weren’t going to vote to do so? We’re not so sure.

Are those that weren’t motivated to vote before really going to be convinced by a group of celebrities talking down to them, condescendingly saying things like “God, I hope you have at least five friends,” and “You do know that you have to register to vote, don’t you?”

Unless they’re voting on whether or not they should throw eggs at the celebrities' houses or set a flaming bag of dog poop on their doorstep, we don’t think it’s going to register with the target audience.

If the piece had been a little shorter and done away with some of the more patronizing clips it might have worked a little better. We’re not sure it would have convinced people to vote, but at least it wouldn’t have annoyed them either.

That said, it's not without redeeming qualities and humor. Almost every time Jonah Hill was on the screen made us chuckle and there were some good bits from Sarah Silverman and Ellen Degeneres as well.

No matter what you thought of the ad, voting is important, so we encourage everyone to get out there and vote it up. Even if it's a write-in vote for Notchweiner. We're not saying you should do that. We're just saying if you did, free ponies for everyone!

Excuse all the tags, but there are a LOT of celebrities in these ads. I didn't want to leave anyone important out.

This year, celebrities reeeeeeally want you to vote. Hell so do I! However, I kind of wonder how much these ads are really going to help anybody. I thought I would show em all to you anyway. The inspirational, the lame, and the really f*cking lame. Enjoy!

Here is a an oldie but a goodie.

See the rest after the cut---

Sarah Silverman, funny as always (well mostly), but effective?

Usually I CAN be tricked with reverse psychology, but this was still to obvious. And if Sarah once again, Jonah Hill and that one Friends joke wasn't in it, it would be unwatchable. Not safe for work by the way.

Speaking of unwatchable.

Fun Stuff makes its triumphant return with a boatload of election-minded videos. American celebrit

Fun Stuff makes its triumphant return with a boatload of election-minded videos. American celebrities have long used their unproven influence to encourage their fellow citizens to vote and they've never gone as all out as this year, what with their Obama songs and all. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Americans didn't actually get to vote for their presidents? So what is it you do vote for?

The above video, titled 5 Friends for some dumb reason, features a boatload of celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Benicio Del Toro, Sarah Silverman, Dustin Hoffman, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Linney, Jonah Hill, Natalie Portman, Forest Whitaker, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Trachtenberg, Demi Moore, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Courteney Cox Arquette, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Amy Adams, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Bacon and several others.

The one below however, entitled The Muzzler, is much more low-key and features only Jessica Alba (ironically in one of her better performances) and Hayden Panettiere.

And if that wasn't enough, Rosario Dawson wrote and starred in the four-part internet musical La Pasion De La Decision to encourage American latinos to vote, directed by her co-star Wilmer Valderrama. You can see all four videos after the jump. Which would you say is more earnest/more convincing?

After making a name for himself playing the clingy, obsessive, overly-emotional boyfriend to a T (see Nick Andopolis on Freaks and Geeks and Eric on Undeclared), Jason Segel decided to take the logical next step and translate his signature character to the big screen in last spring's Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Released this past week on DVD, the romantic comedy from the team behind Knocked Up and the 40-Year-Old Virgin stars Segel as Kristen Bell's doting, TV theme song-writing boyfriend, whom she dumps once her acting career takes off. Where Nick would have reacted by reciting Styx lyrics to her in a candle-covered basement and Eric by crafting a multimedia presentation of their most intimate moments, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall Segel responds by trying to convince Bell of his commitment to her while sitting bareass on a leather couch. Regardless of the response, all three characters suffer from the same compulsive, pitiful, foredoomed devotion that drives away the women they love and leaves them heartbroken and alone. While both Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared ended before we could see what ultimately became of Nick and Eric, Forgetting Sarah Marshall follows Segel as he tries to piece his life back together by taking a Hawaiian vacation -- only to discover that Bell is in the room next door with Russell Brand, the most lecherous man on the face of the earth.

Highlights of the Forgetting Sarah Marshall trailer include: 1) The aforementioned breakup scene where Segel lets his towel drop when he realizes he's getting dumped. 2) Segel drinking chianti from an orange juice glass while watching Bell and Brand on Access Hollywood. 3) Segel crying after sleeping with another woman. 4) Jonah Hill making a pass at Brand after giving him his demo CD. 5) Segel falling off a cliff while trying to impress Mila Kunis. And, 6) Segel tricking Bill Hader's wife into mimicking a sex act while speaking to the two of them on a webcam. My favorite line in the trailer comes when Bell asks Segel what he's doing at the resort and he jokingly replies, "Came here to murder you." Forgetting Sarah Marshall opened April 18, 2008 and the DVD was released September 30, 2008. Check out the trailer at Zuguide.com.

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently in the news or were run across in my non-scientific Internet search. A short explanation is given about some of their comments or actions in favor of Obama but please take it with a large grain of salt as it is in no way complete. In case someone asks, of course there are a small number of stars that support the John McCain / Sarah Palin ticket like Sylvester Stallone, John Voight, Ted Nugent and Charlie Daniels.

It is no secret that most Hollywood and music stars are liberals and have become a reliable source of campaign cash for Democratic candidates. So far the music and entertainment industry has given around $ 15 million to the Obama presidential effort and donated $ 3.4 million to the Hillary Clinton campaign. How did John McCain fare you ask? His campaign has received around $1 million.

Not included are many rap and hip-hop stars like 50 Cent, Chamillionare, Scarface, etc., because around 95% of their community supports Obama’s candidacy. To list them all would take forever. They support Obama by using clothes with Obama’s image on them on stage, by putting up Obama or Obama/Biden banners at their concerts, etc. Almost all speak favorably of the candidate and hope the more outspoken members of their community tone down their support for fear of alienating voters that do not understand what their music is about. Some artists have said they support and will vote for Obama because he is one of them. Others say he is the most qualified for the job with race having nothing to do with their decision. To say that they are excited about this election is an understatement!

Below the stars, more or less in alphabetical order, listed by their last name. Looking for Oprah? She’s under W for Winfrey. How about Jay-Z? He’s under C for Shawn Carter. Homer Simpson? Try S for Homer Simpson. Yes, even Homer tries to vote for Obama.

Enjoy. Or not.

Most people outside of the hip-hop community missed the significance of the gesture but it quickly became controversial. In a mater of days after the controversy that a presidential candidate for the first time ever used hip-hop inspired gestures during a speech had reached a crescendo, it was learned that the gesture could be related to a song by Jay-Z called “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”.
Oprah Winfrey: On September 5, 2008 the Drudge Report said that the show is receiving a lot of emails asking that Sarah Palin be on. Half of the staff really wants Palin to appear but that Oprah and a couple of her people do not because it might hurt Obama. In 2007 continues the Drudge Report, conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was not allowed to go on when he was promoting his book. Later on September 5, 2008 Oprah stated to TMZ that she would love to have Palin on, after the election, as the staff had not discussed the Palin appearance and she had made the decision not have her show become a platform for candidates. Oprah has said about Obama: That would be my favorite guy, ….I know him well enough to believe in his moral authority. And that is the number one reason why I am supporting him, ..my Senator, my favorite Senator, and my choice. He appeared twice on Oprah, in January 2005 and October 2006, before she gave him her formal endorsement. On September 25, 2006 Oprah, on Larry King Live, said she hoped Obama ran for President. May 2007 Oprah formally endorses Obama for President. Many opine it was Oprah that introduced Obama to white American women and because of her active support suffered a huge backlash that continues to these days. August 2008 she was at the DNC in Denver praising Obama’s acceptance speech. September 2008 two University of Maryland economists say Oprah’s endorsement has given Obama approximately 1 million votes he would not have gotten otherwise. September 2008 she asked her viewers to support Senate bill 1738 proposed by Senator Joe Biden and endorsed by Senator Barack Obama. September 2008 Oprah again said her staff had not brought up having Sarah Palin on her show but would like to have her on after the election.
Leonardo DiCaprio has produced this star-studded, humorous five-minute YouTube public service announcement that, for the first minute or so, has celebrities like Courteney Cox Arquette and Halle Berry saying "Don't vote." Of course, the clip drips in sarcasm - Jamie Foxx interjects, "Who cares about global warming, and the fact that...;" "...our polar ice caps are melting," DiCaprio completes his sentence- in between all the so-called "urges" not to vote. After plenty of jokes (highlights include Jonah Hill's "I've never fought a war on drugs. I've never done shit on drugs besides played Halo 2."), the obvious is stated, kicked off by Berry saying, "Don't vote...unless you care about health care," a sentiment echoed by more of the stars on various other important issues, like the war or abortion.

[caption id="attachment_101" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Obama and McCain's stances on abortion"][/caption]

The video did a great job conveying the importance of a vote. By using a sort of reverse psychology, the nonpartisan ad used personalities that appeal to all types of demographics - Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Aniston, will.i.am, Usher - to make viewers feel as though they'd be stupid not to exercise their right.

The stars tell the audience that they need to register to vote, almost saying "duh" with their tone. And then, they each say something along the lines of "I'll wait while you write this information down."

The ways the actors, singers, and comedians convey their message really does make the audience feel like voting is as obvious a thing to do as brushing your teeth in the morning. And that is how it should be. Party politics aside, if we care about what's going on in this world - and we should, because a lot needs to be fixed - we need to get out there.

So, as the video suggests, send it to five friends. Get the word out. Register as soon as possible, deadlines are fast approaching. Then, on Nov. 4, get to the polls. Think about the issues that matter. Think about who will get the results you want in areas that matter to you. Then, make your voice heard. Vote.

Leonardo DiCaprio, will i. am, Tobey Maguire, and Forest Whitaker have created public service announcements to encourage American youth to register to vote. The non-partisan PSAs, produced by DiCaprios Appian Way, were created to engage and inspire young people to register and vote and participate in the upcoming election. Celebrities appearing in the PSAs include: Amy Adams, will.i.am, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Bacon, Halle Berry, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Connolly, Courteney Cox, Ellen DeGeneres, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Jonah Hill, Dustin Hoffman, Anthony Kiedis, Ashton Kutcher, Adam Levine, Laura Linney, Eva Longoria, Tobey Maguire, Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Ethan Suplee, Kyra Sedgwick, Michelle Trachtenberg, Usher, and Forest Whitaker.

Well, if it wasn't the "Senator Obiden" comment that really drove the point home that I needed to go vote, it was definitely Kevin Connolly.

I kid, I kid. This is actually pretty great as far as PSAs go. I feel like they really struck a chord that resonates with most young internet users- they were smart asses. Yep, I remember not too long ago I was a dumb kid who didn't care about anything. But now I am an adult and I'm voting because I do care. I firmly believe that with the right direction and determination that we can get ourselves out of this hell hole we've practically buried ourselves in. It's a very scary time indeed- a time of upheaval and a time for... wait for it... WAIT FOR IT... CHANGE !

Best part of the whole video:
"I've never fought a war on drugs, I've never done shit on drugs except play Halo 2." - Jonah Hill
Hahahahahaha seriously, my love for that dude grows on a regular basis.

How do you get young folks to vote? Just say NO!

Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Tobey Maguire, Eva Longoria Parker and other stars are using reverse psychology to get young people into voting booths on election day.

In a new public service announcement that hit YouTube and other online outlets Wednesday, DiCaprio says: "Please -- just don't vote." Others echo his plea: "Don't vote."

But the stars soon twist the message: Voting is a civic duty and the only way to effect change.

"I mean, seriously, ... after this whole video -- if you're not gonna vote, I don't even know what to say. ... You know you have to vote," says DiCaprio, who produced the PSA.
