What I found in the process was...there is plenty going on! Not as much as larger cities, but a lot more than I expected. So why does the city seem so dull sometimes?

Here are my two hypotheses: 

1. We have a small-town mindset, which leads us to want to just sit at home and watch TV every night instead of going out or making our own fun.
2. We simply don't know what's going on.

So, in an attempt to move us in the right direction, I've added the Jtown Events page. You can find this at the right under "Pages". I will try to consolidate all of the music/theatre/events that I can find around the immediate area into one accessible spot.

 Of course, it was another time.. a time before the radical 60's came into being..where some of us witnessed bra burning, free sex, woodstock and the beginnings of Earth Day...lots of drugs, immorality was hot...divorce rate jumped to 50% between 1958 and the 70"s..fatherless homes, astronomical # of single moms trying to to raise children while she worked for 1/2 of their former income...Heck it was the beginning of Freedom..freedom from being chained in the prison of marriage .Join the Weathermen, SLS or SDS...ah,,it was the good times...Make Love not War..freedom from many rules, freedom from authority, freedom to burn old glory..freedom to sleep around with whoever you wanted whenever you wanted and just do what you want to do..don't need any responsibility. pregnant? sorry about your luck...Heck it was the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, a time of change and the Age of Aquarius..

My other observation is this: though I don't know what comprised the original soundtrack, the one I've been auditing includes what I seem to recall as Dvořák's 8th Symphony--for those of you counting, and assuming I'm not mistaken, that's the one right before his Symphony from the New World--though, unfortunately, also right before his trip to the United States, about which he commented "I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them." Though, as I also recall, there's little evidence of anything but European influence in the work. It would be ironic were the music the 9th Symphony, but not so much as it is...and perhaps a reason to jump with laughter would be if the music was all Scott Joplin, but...as it is...not so much. Except this: if Wagner can remind us of Nazis, Dvořák can remind us of the Negroes (that's a politically incorrect word, but I wouldn't say "Cowboys and First Americans" either...it ruins the point.)

The Birth of a Nation did not fail--I found myself quietly urging, shouting, "hurry up KKK! hurry up and save them!" And was grateful when the evil blacks who had overrun the town, its government, its good people, raping and rioting through the streets, were finally put back in their place, their votes taken away, by the good KKK. That's worth something--that this fine art, still brand new, has the power to take a liberal Jew of modern sympathies, and turn him into an old fashioned white supremacist! That says something else: that the belief system of white supremacy is too weak to bear itself; it takes a film of falsities and melodrama to rally its troops in favor of the cause.

Over the weekend, I rose early enough to go yard saling. I was just in that great thrifting mood too. You know--good coffee in hand, a big messy raspberry muffin, driving w/your knee, while looking for yard sale signs. It's like treasure hunting for adults. And I really scored. I got a slew of books, the contents of some old tackle boxes--rusty fish hooks galore, feathers for tieing lures, weights, old fishing pouches, but the pieces that really got me were the records.

An old Boomer couple: long grey haired guy w/a mustache, she with a wing sleeved blouse, ala Stevie Nicks, were selling their ENTIRE record collection. The Rat Pack: tons of Sinatra; 60s, 70's gold mine: Grand Funk Rail Road, The Byrds, Dylan, Young, Buffalo Springfield, Joplin. I wanted all 5 boxes. They were a quarter each! I don't own a record player. I didn't care. I bought 9 records. I want more.

You see, I was a 60's child, but really I missed it. I was too young. I was just barely old enough in the 70s, but we didn't know then history was being made. We were just hanging out, watching boys, living in the mountains. Our music was The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Creadance (which I do love), Kansas, The Doobies and, yes, Journey.

There's this great scene in the movie "Almost Famous" when Anita leaves her young brother William behind w/their overprotective mother. She looks William straight in the eyes and tells him,  "One day you'll be cool. Look under your bed. It will set you free." Under the bed is her whole record stash: The Who, Yes, Dylan, Bowie, Zepplin. . . . That's how I felt on Sunday. And even today I'm sitting here looking at all this great music I can't listen to. I could go buy Janis on CD at Target or Walmart or Amazon, but it just feels wrong.

Non, attendez, encore un truc... Ceux qui ont regardé le remarquable "68" de Patrick Rotman ont-il été, comme moi, sensibles à la troublante similitude entre cette année-là et ce que nous vivons en ce moment ? Des JO ternis par la violence avant même leur ouverture, un bourbier de guerre où l'on ne sait plus qui soutenir (ceux qui meurent : je suis toujours du côté de ceux qui meurent, sauf lorsqu'ils prennent les commandes d'un avion de ligne), de l'agitation dans nos belles démocraties, agitation qui voit s'élever pour ou contre elle des voix intellectuelles et discordantes... et pourtant. La similitude s'arrête là.

Où sont en 2008 les rêves de vivre ensemble, de flower power, d'amour libre et de course nu dans les prés verts ? Où sont surtout les Janis Joplin, les Jimi Hendrix, les Jim Morrison... tous les talents qui portaient ces idées avec autant de naturel que le poil long et les cotons indiens, qui posaient les bases musicales et poétiques de toute une génération de contestants, qui mettaient un peu d'éternité dans la révolte ? Où sont-ils, ceux d'aujourd'hui dont le son, les mots, l'énergie, nous feront encore vibrer 40 ans après ?

En 2008, qui prend le relais dans le gueuloir ? 40 ans de posés, et je ne retiens rien de mieux que le son de 68. Est-ce l'argent ou le goût des gens, mais on a les grands artistes qu'on mérite.

Donc, c'est fini tout ça, je ne vous embête plus avec mes rengaines, et revenons à nos moutons : Aria des Brumes.

Il y a un gars, un gars qui n'a peut-être pas la visibilité des Doors, des Who ou des Led Zep, mais dont la voix d'aujourd'hui m'a fait chaud tout partout. Non, il ne chante pas dans le micro (encore que, peut-être...), non il ne se secoue pas sur scène devant des milliers de hippies subjugués (encore que), mais il lit et il écrit.

C'est Thimotée Rey. Vous en avez lu de lui, si vous choisissez bien vos anthos de l'imaginaire et vos fanzines. Il publie à la mitraillette, des nouvelles et des illustrations, voire des recettes de cuisines qui font passer Einstein pour un aimable touilleur.

Ce Tim'O vient de me faire le grand honneur et le confondant plaisir d'écrire une critique sur Aria des Brumes. Il n'est pas question que j'en donne des extraits ici : un tel monument (sa critique) doit être pris dans son ensemble et fouillé jusqu'au plus profond recoin. Alors allez-y, c'est sur Parchemins & Traverses, éditeur et chroniqueur de l'imaginaire. Prenez votre temps, c'est du lourd, de l'analyse érudite, de l'argumentation comme j'en ai rarement lu, une critique rétroactive qui transformerait presque son objet en chef d'œuvre (heureusement que TimO nuance son propos et évite ce travers).

Timothée, tu es peut-être pour moi ce qu'il restera de 2008 (bon, au moins de son début).

Rod Slemmons

Rod Slemmons has been the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago since 2002, where he teaches undergraduate photo history and graduate theory seminars in the Photography Department. He also teaches graduate courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has curated six exhibitions at MOCP, including “Persistence of Vision: The Career of Paul Berger.”

Rod previously taught photography, history of photography and graduate Museum Studies for 12 years at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was the National Chair of the Society for Photographic Education from 1990 to 1994. He was named Honored Educator at the SPE National Conference in Miami in 2007. Before and during his time at the University of Washington he was the Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Seattle Art Museum for 14 years, producing 35 exhibitions and numerous catalogs, including “Like a One-Eyed Cat” in 1989, the first retrospective of Lee Friedlander.

Rod has an MA in literature and writing from the University of Iowa. He trained as a graduate intern at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House while working on an MFA in Photography and Museum Studies from the Rochester Institute of Technology, 1976–78.

Vi lever i högsta grad i en tid som idealiserar författare, kändisar osv.
Dagerman är ett lysande exempe. Han är en än idag högst levande författare, mycket pågrund av sitt självmord.
Det kan jag säga trots att jag älskar den mannen som min egen far. Hans böcker, främst Nattens Lekar och De dömdas ö, skulle fortfarande vara fyrtorn i ett mörkt och bistert 40-tal. Tysk höst skulle fortfarande ett av mest inkännande dokument över den tyska efterkrigstiden man kan hitta.
MEN och det här är ett riktigt stort men, om han hade levt tills han blev 80 hade detta koncentrat av gränslös litteratur vattnats ur av att ha följts upp av en hel rad böcker. Vissa bra, andra mindre bra.
Dagermans storhet som författare ligger i att han under ungefär fem år lyckades kläcka ur sig mer och större litteratur än vad de flesta klarar av under ett fullgånget litteraturliv.
Man minns honom inte för hans författarskap, man minns honom på grund av hans självmord och iom det hålls hans författargärning vid liv.
Hur många storartade författare har inte glömts under årens lopp? För författaren räcker det sällan längre med enbart storartad litteratur för att överleva sin generation. Det behövs något mer och ett självmord är knappast dåligt i det sammanhanget. Det är ett faktum. Hur osmakligt det än kan verka.

Att Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Ian Curtis, Janis Joplin, Sylvia Plath etc. fortsätter vara aktuella och gång på gång upptäckas av nya generationer beror på att de tog livet av sig, inte på att de var bländande författare/musiker.
Converse ska lansera en linje med skor i Cobains anda. I den stil han bar under sin korta karriär i livet.
För att han var en storartad musiker? Knappast. Snarare för att han för alltid kommer att stå som symbol för de unga som alltid kommer vara unga. Som alltid kommer vara i uppror mot etablissemanget, samhället.

Det är ett faktum. Vi idealiserar döden.

Como era de se esperar, não estou mantendo um ritmo no Blog, é difícil viu?

O mais incrível é que estou dando satisfações à um publico imaginável, é legal se enganar e achar que tem um público, torna a coisa um pouco mais séria.

Nesse primeiro momento fica aqui minha lamentação pela morte do ator Heath Ledger, que infelizmente faleceu semanas depois do meu post anterior. Depois de tão elogiado por todos veículos e críticos por seus papéis de impacto, seja como o cowboy homossexual em O Segredo de Brokeback Mountain ou com a reinvenção do personagem Coringa.

Hollywood perde uma de suas principais revelações nos últimos tempos.

É isso que me faz deixar os temas que tinha escolhido para uma outra hora e pensar um pouco mais sobre os jovens ícones mortos.

Será que isso é realmente bom? Muitos dizem que é melhor assim, morrer como um Jonh Lennon, imortalizado em palavras e imagens, e não como um Paul McCartney, o Beatle vendido ou Ringo Starr, o Beatle no ostracismo.

Perdoem-me os mais radicais, mas prefiro um ícone vendido ou caído no ostracismo. É tudo uma questão de ampliar seu modo de ver as coisas.

Pra você, pode ser legal idolatrar um jovem eterno em suas lembranças, mas garanto que isso não fará Matilda nem um pouco satisfeita.

Provavelmente você não conheça Matilda ou conheceu à pouco tempo, nas manchetes. Ela é filha de Heath Ledger e tem apenas dois anos. Não tem mais um pai. Simples assim. Você perdeu um ator imortalizado como ídolo, mas Matilda perdeu um pai.

Às vezes esquecemos que essas celebridades ainda são pessoas. Pessoas que têm família, têm responsabilidade, têm uma vida.

Posso afirmar com 100% de certeza que Lucinha Araújo jamais desejou o destino de seu filho Cazuza, um poeta imortal para os fãs, mas que infelizmente foi um mortal para sua mãe.

Não vivi a geração Paz e Amor, mas queria que caras como Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison e Janis Joplin tivessem seus 65 anos e ainda tocassem para todos, queria que eles se vendessem para podermos xingá-los de mercenários, comprados. Ainda assim seria melhor.

Claro que às vezes também tenho um desejo de catástrofe, talvez isso seja normal em 50% dos seres humanos. Mas quando pensamos a fundo, lembramos que toda história tem um contexto. E nenhum desses ídolos estava sozinho neste mundo. E quem fica é que sofre e geralmente sofrem as pessoas mais importantes.

Um brinde aos heróis que já se foram e principalmente às Matildas e Lucinhas, heroínas da resistência.

El festival de música y arte de Woodstock fue uno de los festivales de rock más famosos de la historia. Tuvo lugar en una granja de Bethel, Nueva York, los días 15, 16 y 17 de agosto de 1969.

El festival tiene el nombre de Woodstock porque inicialmente estaba programado que tuviese lugar en un lugar del pueblo de Woodstock, en Ulster County; la oposición local casi cancela el evento, pero Sam Yasgur convenció a su padre Max Yasgur para acoger al concierto en los terrenos de la familia, localizados en Sullivan County.

Ocurrieron tres muertes en el festival de Woodstock: una debida a una sobredosis de heroína, otra tras una ruptura de apéndice y una última por un accidente con un tractor. También ocurrieron dos nacimientos no confirmados en el festival. Se realizó un famoso documental sobre este concierto, dirigido por Michael Wadleigh y montado por Martin Scorsese. Fue estrenado en 1970 y ganó el Premio Oscar al mejor documental. La película ha recibido el título de "culturalmente significativa" por la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos y seleccionada para su conservación en el National Film Registry.

Si ya escuchando el Rock in Rio en Madrid se me ponen los pelos como escarpias...  Estuve una vez en un festival de 3 días en Jerez y me lo pasé geniarl, fue mortal, ni me imagino uno de este calibre.
