Winslet, 33, remains on good terms with filmmaker Threapleton, who she divorced in 2001, and often spends time with him and their eight-year-old, Mia, her new husband, director Sam Mendes, and their four-year-old son Joe.

The actress is thrilled that Threapleton and his new partner Julie will introduce a bundle of joy into their close family circle next year.

Threapleton, 34, explained: "Julie is in the mid stages of pregnancy and we don't know what sex the baby will be. We hope that our child will get to know Mia and take his or her place in the extended family."

With the debates and baseball playoffs still holding most of my attention, films have had to take a backseat.  So I'm eschewing my traditional review format here for the moderately successful The Duchess.  Saul Dibb's "inspired by a true story" costume drama about the Duchess of Devonshire is a fairly entertaining run-of-the-mill feminist bodice-ripper.  It's one of those movies impeccably shot, full of costumes and pageantry, and featuring A-class acting that is hard to dislike, but just doesn't have that special "it" due to our familiarity with this stereotypical story of a woman of immense wealth and power who is forced to chose between her true feelings and what society demands of her.  In the titular role, Keira Knightley acts the hell out of her part, and for the first time, seems to fully inhabit that old-school "Movie Star" mold.  Ralph Fiennes, as the Duke, delivers a master-class in the portrayal of an elitist creep.  It's another classic turn from the chameleon-like British thespian who really should have had an Oscar on the mantle a long time ago.  Featuring hearty doses of smarmy satire and stuffy 18th-century social mores, The Duchess is no Barry Lyndon, but it fits the bill as an HBO-style production of Masterpiece Theater.

However, I couldn't help but think the best things about this recent trip to the cinema were the trailers, and thoughts of the film teasers oddly plagued my devouring of the main course.  Yes, there was the preview for Oliver Stone's inexplicable W (opening next week) which looks funnier and funnier with each new TV spot.  But there were also two subtly thrilling trailers for some prime-time Oscar bait:  In one corner, we have what looks to be a stunning film adaptation of a controversial stage-play that touches on the Catholic abuse scandals among other heady topics starring a habited Meryl Streep, a frocked Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a perfectly cast Amy Adams as a naive nun.  I have faith no art-house film buff will want to miss Doubt.  In the other corner is Sam Mendes seemingly stirring and evocative adaptation of Richard Yate's novel, Revolutionary Road, staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as a young couple on the brink of emotional ruin in a 1950's suburban purgatory.  The cinematography and the acting in this, as in Doubt, looks to be amazing.  While a perfectly adequate The Duchess will quickly fade from memory, these two films, based on their trailers and pedigree, look to be the type that viewers and critics will write home about at the end of the year.  I can't wait.

It must have been awkward for her having these sex scenes with hottie Leo whiler her husband Sam Mendes was directing.

"I just kept saying, 'This is too fucking weird,'" recalls Winslet. "And Leo was like, 'Oh, get over it.' And I'm going, 'Yeah, a little reminder: You're my best friend. He's my husband. This is a bit weird.  And Leo was like, 'Oh, get over it.' And I'm going, 'Yeah, a little reminder: You're my best friend. He's my husband. This is a bit weird.'''

Mendes recalls:

''I will admit it was quite bizarre to direct my wife in how to make love.  But it's difficult whether you're married to a person or not.''

Mi-a placut mult ideea filmului: posibilitatea de a sterge din memorie ceva sau pe cineva. Mi-a placut foarte mult si cum e construit filmul.Un labirint in care actiunea are loc ba in mintea lui Joel, ba in realitate, urmarindu-i cand pe Joel si Clementine, cand pe angajatii Lacuna Inc si deplasandu-se prin timp cand inainte cand inapoi pentru ca in final sa ajunga cam tot de unde a plecat.

Toate astea imi aduc aminte pe undeva de Memento si Being John Malkovitch ( al carui scenariu a fost realizat de catre aceeasi persoana Charlie Kaufman )

Carrey si Winslet isi joaca foarte bine rolurile si creeaza 2 personaje cu personalitati diferite dar care graviteaza unul in jurul altuia chiar si cand amintirile le-au disparut. Nici restul personajelor nu sunt de umplutura, aparitiile lor subliniind ideea ca este in natura oamenilor sa caute dragostea indiferent de obstacolele care le apar in cale.

Si din punct de vedere vizual filmul are cateva puncte forte: masini care cad din cer, case care se descompun, fete si amintiri care par a se dizolva, scenele in care Joel incearca sa ascunda amintirea lui Clementine sporesc senzatia de fantastic si adauga sare si piper la atmosfera filmului.

Ahh .... si finalul.....finalul. Ce frumos lasa loc pentru interpretare personala.

Joel: I can't see anything that I don't like about you.

Clementine: But you will! But you will. You know, you will think of things. And I'll get bored with you and feel trapped because that's what happens with me.

Joel: Okay.

Clementine: [pauses] Okay.

Per total e un film care mi-a placut foarte mult. Un film cu suflet si un film care vorbeste despre lucruri cu care multi dintre noi ne putem identifica.

For movie fans that also read literature, adaptations of favorite books are like a Christmas morning where plenty of eagerly-awaited gifts either don't work or arrive in the wrong size. Hollywood takes its liberties, for the sake of economy or artistic will, and details and nuance inevitably get changed or removed; sometimes worse, parts are miscast. It's been suggested that movies can never live up to their source material because books are, to some degree, movies that screen within the reader's mind. How could anything live up to the reader's own perceptions?

But there are also adaptations whose advance word fills the source material's fans with cold, suspicious dread, because of the director or the stars or a combination of same. Sam Mendes' Christmas release Revolutionary Road is such a film and I am such a fan. While I'd be the first to support any of author Richard Yates' works brought to screen, from the looks of this film's first trailer his anguished, haunting 1961 debut novel has been ground up into middlebrow melodrama for the Hollywood Oscar trip.

Yates' stories frequently take place within the business worlds of New York - especially public relations and advertising - and the surrounding suburbs. His characters are restless, resentful, and longing for something deeper than what mid-20th Century American consumerism promises but never provides. Revolutionary Road, his most potent articulation of this theme, relates the demise and fall of Frank and April Wheeler, a young married couple who dream of escaping their white-collar life in the Connecticut suburbs for something more liberated in Europe. April wants to be an actress; Frank just wants out of his button-down workaday routine. But they are unable to escape both the trappings of their surroundings - the children, the social drinking, the lure of adultery - and their seething disappointment in one another.

If that sounds like a certain Emmy-winning cable drama, Yates' work was essentially Mad Men's early progenitor, and Paramount has already wisely previewed the film during that show. But when watching the trailer consider how much of the book's - and Mad Men's - themes are leadenly shouted to the rooftops or used for close-up Oscar clip-friendly vignettes and you'll get an idea of what I'm afraid Mendes is up to. Beginning with American Beauty, his direction tends toward having actors emote - to ACT! - rather than inhabit their characters or to assist him in constructing scenes that build a whole film. Yates intended the Wheelers' story to be an American tragedy, the last puttering out of the American spirit first generated by its revolution (hence the title). The trailer shows DiCaprio and Winslet acting their hearts out and handsomely inhabiting the so-chic-right-now mid-Century setting but doesn't show much of what the story's about.

Mendes' films are also not above sanitizing their subject material. 2002's Road To Perdition, based on Max Allan Collins' superb graphic novel, sacrificed character depth and ethnic identity in favor of standard action movie tropes. The graphic novel's protagonist was a devoutly Catholic mob hit man in the Midwest; the film removed his faith, changed the locale, added an antagonist, and even altered the main characters' family name in order to seem less Irish. (Star Tom Hanks won an Oscar playing a homosexual. Were Mendes and the film's other creators worried American audiences wouldn't accept him as Irish?) If such topics as heritage and Catholicism are too risque, who knows what will become of Revolutionary Road's climax, in which (Spoiler Alert) April dies after attempting to give herself an abortion. Yates was the first to scoff at even the idea of a happy ending; at best his resolutions were bittersweet. Will Mendes be willing to leave his lovely co-stars miserable at story's end? Even American Beauty's Lester Burnham was left feeling content, despite his own violent murder.

Oscar buzz reportedly already surrounds the film, and as a purely intuitive reaction it seems the type to garner praise from the mainstream critical press as well as fawning word of mouth from moviegoers. As with all films, fans should hope for the best but prepare for the worst - the worst in this case being a lowered-volume adulteration of Yates' bleak but searing vision, something merely Hollywood wrung from a legacy of great American fiction. Revolutionary Road opens December 26th nationwide.

I'm one of those who watched Titanic over and over again. It can be quite cheesy at times, but I've always been a romantic at heart, so I love it.

Now the ill-fated lovers Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are at it again, on dry land this time with Revolutionary Road, which is directed by Kate's husband Sam Mendes. The movie is based on Richard Yates' novel of the same title.

I wonder if Kate Beckinsale was as awkward when she filmed Underworld: Evolution with co-star Scott Speedman and director husband Len Wiseman?

To think that kissing Leornardo DiCaprio is awkward...well kissing him for a second time and this time in front of your very own husband. Revolutionary Road, a new movie about a failing suburbian marriage in the 1960s, has pulled the famous couple we all loved from Titanic, and put them back together in a love mix again. Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio spice it up on screen in front of Winslet's husband, who directs the film. Uncomfortable, yes, but a job as well. The duo plays it up and has already has the award committee with the Oscars talking. The film will fill up the box office on December 26.

Finally, the official trailer to Revolutionary Road has been released.

I just watched it, and I'm sure you have too because its been out for a while, and we all know how I work. 

BUT, for those of you who are just like me! here's the trailer.  And all I can say is... WOW.  This looks like a great movie, and I officially love Leo, and I love him and Kate together.  They are such a dynamic duo!! I can't wait for Oscar season :D  It's probably my favorite time of the year, next to Christmas and Wedding season.

Enjoy! and prepare yourself for chills and goosebumps!!!

I will not mention here about the book yet (Penguin Red Classic is available to me) as i am at the very beginning of it but i should express that i am delighted to see the movie...The leading cast was pleasing as well including Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet...

The story of the movie is basically about two sisters, Marianne and Elinor, who have been in search of true and esteemed love for so long, getting through very painful experiences of being young and in love and finding the happiness at the very end...

During the watch, it raises the question of "Why are the most irresistable men always the most unsuitable?" and perhaps you will find the answer!

Pauline (Melanie Linskey) y Juliet (Kate Winslet) se conocen en el colegio y se hacen muy amigas a pesar de pertenecer a clases sociales diferentes: Julie es de clase alta y Pauline pertenece a una familia más humilde.

Ambas son aficionadas a la literatura y les encanta escribir, así que pronto crean un mundo de fantasía donde viven los “Borovnians”. Entre las dos escriben la historia de Deborah y Richard. Ellas asumen los roles de sus personajes en la vida real, escribiéndose cartas y hasta llamándose por esos nombres (aclaremos que es una relación romántica la imaginada por la ávida mente de estas muchachas). Esta historia les sirve para escapar de la opresión causada por una escuela inflexible y unos padres que no son lo que ellas quieren: los de Pauline son terriblemente conservadores, y los de Juliet son faltos de amor.

Sus familias comienzan a sospechar que la relación de las chicas va más allá de una simple amistad (y… da para pensarlo… ¿o yo soy la única con mente sucia?). Intentan separarlas, alegando que la relación no es sana para ninguna de las dos. Pauline es llevada por sus padres a lo de un psicólogo, recomendado por los padres de Juliet, que la diagnostica como homosexual. Esto causa desesperación en ambas familias y les prohíben verse (¡ustedes se lo buscaron!).

El ver su incondicional amor amenazado, hace que las jóvenes tomen una drástica decisión que cambiará la vida de todos.

El guión está basado en una historia real ocurrida en Nueva Zelanda (que conmocionó al país allá por la década del ´50). (Fue escrito por Frances Walsh y Peter Jackson, que antes de hacerse archiconocido por dirigir la taquillera trilogía de El Señor de los Anillos, fue un principiante que se dedicaba a hacer películas “Gore”, sangrientas y sin mucho sentido, hasta que tuvo su gran break con este film, cuyo guion estuvo nominado al Oscar).

Cuestiones tortescas

La homosexualidad se muestra como algo que surge normal y naturalmente en la relación de Juliet y Pauline. La película muestra cómo se veía una relación de esas características en la década del ’50; no hay que olvidar que los hechos son verídicos y lo que vivieron los personajes de la película sucedió realmente (se dice que el guion es bastante fiel a los hechos reales, obviamente con ciertas licencias, pero hay que subrayar que el mundo de fantasía creado por el director es maravilloso).

Hay algunas escenas como la de la bañera y un pequeño beso en un bosque que dan a entender la verdadera naturaleza de la relación de las chicas que se ve, a veces, camuflada con los personajes de la historia de ficción que ellas crean. (Bueno, no olvidemos la escena de sexo, que se produce antes del momento de la bañera, donde las chicas se dan unos cuantos besos y se sobreentiende la relación sexual)

(Hay que destacar la bella fotografía y lo interesante de la historia, además de las excelentes actuaciones de sus dos protagonistas: una joven Kate Winslet, preéxito de Titanic, y a una debutante Melanie Linskey, quien luego tendría algunos papeles en películas menores, muchas de temática lesbica, que son, después de todo, las que le dan vida a estos personajes no tan ficcionales).
