Mary Shelley's Frankenstein / EUA - 1994 Direção: Kenneth Branagh Elenco: Robert DeNiro, Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter - 118 minutos - Terror

Atenção: A partir daqui contém spoilers.

Ledo engano.

Hopeful his extremely funny part in Tropic Thunder, and now this new movie directed by Bryan Singer will get him back to working on bankable movies so he doesn't have to go back and do sequels to all hes old movie like Stallone and Seagal.

So, it's been a few days since I posted on the blog but that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up with Hollywood's latest attempts at insulting our intelligence. Here are a few items that stuck out to me from the movie/television front over the last few days.

- The folks over at Marvel somehow think Kenneth Branagh is the perfect guy to direct the Thor movie. Even some rumors that he may star as everyone's favorite Norse god. I can't understand why in the hell they picked Branagh. Perhaps they know something we don't but any films he's been involved with have usually been pretty mediocre dramas. What the fuck do I know though?

- Since Brett Ratner couldn't get his Guitar Hero movie going, the powers that be in Hollywood have handed him the directoral reigns over the God of War movie. Ratner is said to be directing the video game film adaptation. If you weren't sure if a God of War movie would suck or not, you can be certain now that Ratner's name is attached. For those not familiar with Ratner's work, he's the genius that brought us not one but three Rush Hour films and ruined the X-men franchise with X-Men: The Last Stand.

- The wonderful minds behind the CW network have decided to capitalize on the Batman franchise by giving us a show about everyone's favorite bird-based superhero, Robin. That's right, a la Smallville, The Graysons will follow Dick Grayson before he dons the red and green tights and begins his homoerotic relationship with our favorite caped crusader. If you're sitting there thinking, "what the hell?" then know that you're not alone.

- Perhaps this is the moment where Hollywood has gone too far. Some asshole is writing a script for a sequel to the sci-fi classic Blade Runner. There are certain films in Hollywood that deserve enough respect to be left alone forever so that their immortal light never fades. We've often seen great films tarnished by unnecessary sequels. That would most certainly be the case were Blade Runner 2 ever hit the screen. Please, leave this masterpiece alone.

Internet argues

Pirates versus ninjas war

We prefer Vikings

It's true - when the internet was meme-bickering the whole Pirates Vs Ninjas bollocks, I was firmly in the 'Vikings Are Better Than Both' camp. 1) Horned helmets are cooler than tricorner hats and scarves wrapped round your face. 2) Big fuck-off axes are cooler than cutlesses and katanas. 3) While some pirates might have beards, not all of them do, and facial hair is strictly a no-no for ninjas. You've pretty much got to be a God among Vikings to get away without having a beard. And beard's are Metal. Viking Metal is also infinitely superior to Pirate Metal, which never quite gets away from being a joke. I don't think there's such a thing as Ninja Metal, but someone bloody ought to invent it if there isn't.

It's taken Amon Amarth seven studio albums (discounting EPs and self-releases) to hit the metal big time. Obviously Viking Metal has been around in various forms since the late 80s, but it took the relatively-recent mainstream surge of Battle Metal to drag Viking Metal along as a hairer, altogether more Norse sidekick. Twilight Of The Thunder God, of which the above is the title-track, is about the Thor's final battle during the Norse apocalypse, Ragnarök, againt Jörmungandr, the world serpent. Who said metal couldn't be educational?

In other recent Thor-news, it's strongly rumoured that Kenneth-bleeding-Brannagh might be on board to direct Marvel's film adaption of Thor. Heavy Metal Haiku really, really, REALLY wants this to be true. It sounds amazing.

This second, probably final trailer for Valkyrie, the new movie from director Bryan Singer (Superman Returns) and writers Christopher McQuarrie (The Way Of The Gun) and newcomer Nathan Alexander based on the true story of several German officers who plotted to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944 looks like it was made specifically to please all those who were unenthusiastic about the first one, by adding a more cliché kind of tension and showcasing more action.

I thought the first trailer was more engaging, since this one really is a lot more stereotypical, but if it gets more people to go see it, then fine. Reaction to this movie so far has baffled me. That whole argument about already knowing the ending, isn't that true about every movie based on a true story? And since when do people pay so much attention to accents when English-speaking people play characters of other nationalities? Anyway, star Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder) had this to say in a recent interview:

You know, we spent a lot of time going back and forth over that. All of a sudden you're listening to people trying to put on accents and Bryan finally said, 'No, no, no.' Just tell the story. We don't want to do an accent movie, just try and find something neutral that won't distract from the story and the characters.

Also the talent contained in this film is amazing. In addition to Cruise, Valkyrie stars Kenneth Branagh (Five Children And It), Terence Stamp (Get Smart), Tom Wilkinson (RocknRolla), Stephen Fry (St. Trinian's), Eddie Izzard (Across The Universe), Thomas Kretschmann (Wanted), Bill Nighy (Hot Fuzz) and WW2 regular Carice Van Houten (Black Book) among others. It will be released in the US and Austria on December 26th, and most other countries in January or February 2009.

You can watch a well-made behind the scenes featurette after the jump. As for the poster, I think it looks pretty cool, but yet somehow feel it doesn't really suit the film. What do you think of the new trailer and poster?

When you think of candidates to direct a Marvel superhero movie, the director/star of 1996's Hamlet is not high on that list. You would think that actor/director Kenneth Branagh would have better things to do, like adapting another Shakespeare work. If Branagh is indeed chosen to direct Thor, will this be another case of a director who doesn't give Marvel fans what they want (Ang Lee's Hulk) or will this be a sucess (Jon Favreau's direction of Iron Man)?

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, reports Variety. The comic book adaptation is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release.

Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Read more HERE.

It's been a bit since I've seen BRANAGH in movies like HAMLET, OTHELLO, and CONSPIRACY (the latter being my one of my favorite WW2 movies) but I think MARVEL is definitely on the right track with a THOR movie. There's no doubt BRANAGH's master of Shakespeare will come in handy when interpreting the Norse God of Thunder but I wonder about the whole Donald Blake alter-ego being reimagined and if it can work. I'm guessing most producers involved would assume that the human element is needed to make a better connection with audiences. Then again, an all out Force of Nature and what drives it could be an interesting approach as well.

My choice of storyline would be busting into Walt Simonson's 'Ragnarok' storyline from the mid 80's but I could see that going REALLY bad REALLY fast if done wrong. Simply too much to cram into what I assume will be an all out action first-story second a la the new HULK movie (which actually worked) or maybe the NBC HEROES series (which I think doesn't work as well).

Since the whole point here is an introduction and then the big AVENGER's team up movie, each hero (IRON MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA etc.) getting some breathing room in their own separate installment should amount to some good pacing for character development.
Anyway, he's probably directing Thor for Marvel. Hey, Marvel likes to dick around undeserving people, too, so it should be a perfect match!

Marvel Comics may be very proud of their comic book character's mythology...but it ain't Shakespeare. This hasn't stopped Marvel from giving another indie director the helm of one of their franchise characters, Thor. Marvel is in serious negotiations with Kenneth Branagh to direct "Thor". That's right kids, Kenneth F'ing Branagh. Getting Sam Raimi and Jon Favreau to direct their movies is one thing, but scoring one of the greatest Shakespearean actors/directors ever would be an absolute coup.

I'm sure it's the exceptional script ($$$$$), the beautiful characters ($$$$$), and the chance to put a comic book icon on the big screen ($$$$$) that has Branagh interested in this one.

After director Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) bailed out to helm Kick-Ass and D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) threw his name in the mix, another filmmaker is now attached to Marvel Studios' forthcoming adaptation of the comic book Thor, one that is the most unusual and the most interesting.

Indeed it's none other than Northern Irish actor/director Kenneth Branagh (Much Ado About Nothing), who is probably being sought for his strong affinity with shakespearean themes, which are apparently prominent in the comic. If this pans out, I'm convinced Branagh could churn out an amazing film.

Thor will be firmly set in the same continuity as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and other forthcoming Marvel films, and like those movies will lead into the planned 2011 The Avengers movie. Thor will be released in 2010. The screenplay was written by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend).

In the midst of my daily scanning for sweet killer news-type things, the dudes and dudettes at Variety.com seriously caught my attention. It looks as if Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct the yet to be crafted Thor movie. You might remember Branagh as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Hamlet. Variety.com states:

"Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct Thor, the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010.Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on Henry V, a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France."

Well now, that's one item they can scratch off the list. Let's just hope that they follow in the sorcerer footsteps of Jon Favreau and Chris Nolan when casting for the main character. I do not want to see any professional wrestler playing Thor. All they need to do is take a stroll down any street of Norway or Iceland. It can't be to hard to spot an overly muscular, blond haired, blue eyed Viking in that setting. Or can it?

I remember the times when he was rumoured to play Aquaman, then they made that crappy TV series instead...Good job Kenneth Branagh turned that role down. But now he is in negotiations to possibly direct Marvels next big adaptation 'Thor' for a release in 2010. Branagh is the latest in a string of directors such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.

Marvel will self-finance the film via its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel used that coin to fund both "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and will do the same for the "Iron Man" sequel that has director Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. returning.
