Cielo Awards 2004 - 2008:

In anul 2004 a fost castigator la sectiunea "Best Club", in cadrul Dancestar Awards;
In acelasi an a primit trofeul pentru "Best Interior Design" (Club World Awards)
Best Venue USA - Urb Magazine 2005
Best Resident DJ - Francois K - Club Worls Awards (2005 si 2006)
Best Nightclub - Village Choice 2006
Best Deep House Club - New York Magazine 2006
Top 50 Nightclubs In The World - DJ Magazine (2006 si 2007)
Best Club - Club World Awards 2008

Dave Dresden, Roger Sanchez, Jojo Flores, Martjin Ten Velden, Laurent Garnier, Sandy Rivera, Layo & Bushwacha!, Carl Craig, Francois K., Louie Vega, Kevin Hedge, Berhouz, Junior Vasquez, Dennis Ferrer, Tedd Patterson, Marques Wyatt, Demon Days, Ben Watt, Giles Peterson, Jazzanova, Victor Calderone, Steve Lawler, Sebastian Leger, Sander Kleinenberg, John Creamer, Frankie Knuckles, Dean K. , Loco Dice, Jody Wisternoff, Tom Stephan, Josh Gabriel, Danny Tenaglia, Theo Parrish, Mathew Dekay, Mark Knight, Kevin Saunderson, Steve Bug, Misstress Barbara, Cobblestone Jazz, D.

After work totally kicking my ass for the past two months or so, it appears I've finally gotten a bit of a reprieve in the form of a few days off in town. I decided, given that it looks like I'll be in the Hamptons next weekend and in Seattle the weekend after, to lay low and kick it in town for a few days. No sooner do I make this decision, however, than I realize there's a shitload of stuff going on. Kon & Amir at Love tonight. The Turntables on the Hudson guys are bringing King Britt to Water Taxi Beach tomorrow night. Y'all know how I feel about the WTB, too, which is why I'm tempted to go back again on Saturday night to catch Thomas and Eric there (Thomas of Wicked and A.R.E. Weapons fame; his live tape at Zanzibar from '93 or so is still an all time personal favorite and he was always the Wicked guy I wouldn't miss). I might have to double up that night, though, since Jason (Spun) is playing Santo's Party House. Oh, and Kevin Saunderson's at the Yard on Sunday. While the Breeders are playing McCarren Pool.

Jesus. Who's tired already?

Our hotel just outside Detroit came at the recommendation of a seasoned DEMF veteran, who promised the "best sleep of your life." Considering the conditions festival attendees sleep under, I brushed off his remark as the result of sleep deprivation. Then I woke up Saturday morning trying to figure out how to bring the bed - frame, mattress, billion count sheets - home with me. The sun was shining and was I ready for 12 hours of electronic music.

After a brief stop at Tim Horton's (mmm cherry cake donuts) and a few wrong turns, the crowds of people and jumping speakers directed us to Hart Plaza. We parked across the street in an underground garage for only $10 for the day - god bless the Midwest and low cost of living. Adorned with silver wrist bands, my crew and I explored Hart Plaza, learning the layout of the land. We first happened upon the Pioneer Pro DJ stage, featuring John Johr and Dieselboy, a combination of techno, house, and jungle - like that small room at a party you hit up when you need a change in music. Next was the amphitheater - VitaminWater stage - reserved for heavy hitters like Speedy J and Carl Craig, the place to be at the end of each night. My favorite stage was the Beatport Stage - techno all day and all night, where Alex Smoke and Paco Josh Wink pumped cracks into the concrete. The Red Bull Music Academy stage was a breath of fresh air, serving up hip-hop by the Cool Kids and classic breaks by Pete Rock. And tucked underground was the Real Detroit stage, showing the rest of the world how Detroit gets down to Mike Grant and Kevin Saunderson.

With five stages and dozens of DJs, it's impossible to see every musical act unless you want to spend the day walking around and listening to one track at a time. But I ain't complaining. The first day alone was worth the hellish car trip. I caught snippets of thumping sets at Beatport all day, including Justin Long and Eric Johnston. Joris Voorn tore the tent down with his funky, outer space techno, and I danced in the sunlight, watching in awe as he smirked and tweaked those knobs. Next up was a double header at the Real Detroit stage - first up was Terrence Parker, the man who uses a telephone as headphones. He scratched like a madman and flooded the cave with gospel house and pure dance music. No contest, he was my favorite set of the day. Stacey Pullen hopped on the turntables, looking happy as a pig in shit to be commanding the crowd with his pure Detroit techno. At this point, my party and I had been dancing/standing for 10 hours. We caught enough of Moby's set to be relieved he was back in his element - working the crowd and returning to his dirty dance roots. "James Brown is Dead" tickled our ears and we decided it was best to leave on top.

Sure, there were dozens of after-parties in Detroit that weekend, but after spending the day listening to electronic music, we wanted to give our synapses and legs a rest. We made a trip to the most non-DEMF event ever - Soul Skate. Luckily Detroit goes to bed at 4 AM, because we barely made it to the roller rink by 2:00. Kenny Dixon spun soul, hip-hop and funk while experts skated the ring. This was definitely not Roller Kingdom. We attempted to skate, but couldn't keep up with the locals, so we played arcade games and watched in awe as kids did roller skating gymnastics and break dancing.

Wanting to save our energy for Day 2, we headed back to the hotel before closing. We rode down 8 Mile Road with the beats echoing in our brains and smiles plastered across our faces. I couldn't believe we were lucky enough to do this all over again tomorrow.

NEXT: Worship on the holy day.

in 1992, some enduring garage classics arrived - the robin s, degrees of motion and shawn christopher classics in this mix are still played out in garage sets today, 16 years on.

1992 was my favourite year, there was just something about it. i just about passed my gcse's after 'studying' on the beach during revision leave. spent the summer alternating between downing bottles of 20/20 wine on the sea front to flashing my fake id at lazy bouncers and most of the time, getting away with it.

then i started college and within the space of a year everything had changed. my college was full of grungey indie kids and goths, but we managed to co-exist.

luther vandross and janet jackson - best things in life are free

aly-us - follow me

was not was - shake your head

ce ce peniston - we got a love thang

rapination and kym mazelle - love me the right way

funky green dogs - reach for me

reese project - colour of love

ann consuelo - see the day

cajmere and dajae - brighter days

inner city - pennies from heaven

robin s - show me love

mk and alana - always

The New Dance Sound Of Detroit, il fait un carton planétaire.

The Elevator, E-Dancer, Esser’ay, K.S. Experience, Kaos, Keynotes, Reese, Tronikhouse, 2 The Hard Way, 3 Down, Bad Boys, The, Inner City, Intercity, Kreem, Reese & Santonio, Reese Project, The, Surreal, Tranzistor, Unreleased Project, X-Ray.

I remember hearing this at Daft Punk… which is pretty much the only thing i can remember from daft punk. However, you can just feel yourself getting giddy in anticipation, so much so your not sure if your hungry or you need to have a wank.ALSO a slight treat… you have probably only just heard it on the radio if your lucky. Jori Hulkkonen, Lifelike (yesss!!!), Kevin Saunderson remix’s are going to be surfacing soon, bundled with a KIM edit

“Good Life”

I, for one, will redouble my efforts.

01. Stimming, "Funkworm" [Diynamic Music] (buy)
Have another look.
02. Len Faki, "Odyssee I" [Podium] (buy)
An offshoot of Faki's own Len Series label, the fourth Podium continues to deliver absolute quality in the form of "Odyssee I." Swimming in an analog sci-fi flavor, the tune's warm launch is propelled by Detroitish arpeggios and a downright pretty motif at its core. Intense without being overblown, this track is for the cusp of peaktime, when you want to make sure all are aboard.
03. Lucy, "Glass Computer" [Perspectiv] (buy)
I love it when a song inspires visualizations which match the sound and the title; "Glass Computer" is no exception. Its tuneful beeps light up the circuitry inside the reverberating atmosphere, shooting sparks in the final minute or so. Backed with two impressive remixes from Mark August and Masaya, Lucy's debut is nothing short of impressive. Another fine signing from Perspectiv. (Runner up for this spot was another Perspectiv: Ripperton's delicate remix of Laurine Frost's "Papillion.")
04. Al Usher, "Here Today" [Misericord] (buy)
Like his Partial Arts partner, Al Usher is known largely for his remix work. But on his solo debut, "Here Today" shows he's no slouch in originating tunes. The tune morphs several times in its length and sounds as organic as it does brilliant. The pitter-patter strings and ringing percussion boil over as a gigantic bass line throws the whole thing into a new swaying rhythm. The other tunes on the release (the one and only Misericord) aren't quite as stunning, but "Here Today" alone makes it worth picking up.
05. Arto Mwambe, "Mudhutma!" [Brontosaurus] (buy) (buy) (buy)
Have another look.
06. Kevin Saunderson, "Till We Meet Again" (Carl Craig remix) [Planet E] (buy)
Have another look.
07. DJ Gregory, "Elle" (Âme Piano Mix) [Defected] (buy) (buy)
I must profess ignorance of the original "Elle," but I know Âme's revision is a large departure from the classic tune (thanks to the magic of online shops' samples). Very much in the vein of their rated "Baladine" single, their mix is superbly constructed and loaded with sound. Rendered tense with persistent scratching, tingly guitar(?) touches and gaseous tones, the tune really hits its stride at the introduction of a vaguely arabesque synth motif which wriggles like a snake possessed. Leave it to the Âme boys to take on a classic and come away with the superior take.
08. Manuel Tur & Dplay, "Black Label #23" [Compost Records] (buy)
Compost Records has long been one of my favorite labels, and its Black Label series efficiently highlights otherwise passed over or rising artists. This is Manuel Tur & Dplay's first effort together (though two more have soon followed it) and it's a fine study in contemporary deep house. Sounding a bit like a stripped back Âme, Tur & Dplay grab for simplistic chord stabs and a light string haze on "Move" and just let them roll. "Clock Work" is a bit more refined by still Âme-esque, concocted with a bobbing chord pattern flecked with claves, and is kept moving by synth builds and plucked string releases.
09. Tadeo, "Fractal" [Cray1 LabWorks] (buy) (buy)
This quick-paced track is delightfully percussive and emotive at once, its plumes of string-led anxiety suppressed only by even more restless percussion. I credit "Fractal" with spurring my greater interest in Tadeo; no mean feat with all the great releases vying for listeners' attention this month.
10. Jamie Lloyd, "What We Have" (Is A Zwicker remix) [Future Classic] (buy)
On first listen it's a bit indie rock in tone for most dance floors, but additional spins unwind the merits of Jamie Lloyd's smoothed over vocal swells and Zwicker's deep housed additional production. A nod in Phil Sherburne's direction for turning me (and hopefully many others) on to this tune.

are you the little girl who immortalised the above phrase into rave culture over altern8 beats and sonic whooshes? I hope to god you don’t now listen to the klaxons and think it’s the same thing.

i was actually quite afraid of the techno rave of the early 90s with its belgian hoover noises and scary choir samples. it wasn’t really for girls – even gas masks, vicks and curtain style hair aside, the music itself was a bit evil sounding. but the bf loves it, hence this mix. i do have a soft spot for old skool in general, and did frequent sterns as a jailbait 15 year old with her wannabe dj boyfriend.

imagine my curiosity when i heard about nu-rave. imagine my disgust when i actually heard it.

yes, partly i hate it because it makes me feel old in the same way that leggings do. but mostly i hate it because if there's one thing i hate, its indie music. nu-rave might as well be called 'how to kill dance music in one easy step'. put a fucking band in there. that is so not the point. if you don't like dance music, you're not a raver, end of. oh, and the nme dd not, have not and never will have anything to do with dance music.

yes, the happy mondays and the whole madchester scene mixed genres. because they couldn't remember their own names least of all what type of band they were. and bez needed something to dance to. there is none of the originality, danger or excitement of the old rave scene. where's the new hacienda? this is a sanitised, mtv-approved movement for kids who got picked up from school every day.

the crowd are the principal reason this will not work. whether the latest movement is original, meshed or outright plagiarism, its the mass market that drive a scene. the only people who like indie music are public schoolboys and girls. old skool ravers were real people. big brother provides a nice illustration of this point - apparent inventor of indie music emily, who clearly hates herself for being white, and pink haired old comedy cheesy quaver tracey.

students, of course, are equally responsible for this travesty as the nme. deprived of proper rave because they're born too late, trying to appropriate something that belonged to a previous generation. is it me, or have students regressed back into the desperately seeking irony twats they were in the 80s?

in the mid 90s, one of my lecturers accused us of being 'benettonized'. the explicit meaning being that we had mobiles we couldn't pay for, nice clothes we'd worked all summer for and spent our grants on nights out at the ministry of sound. the implicit meaning being that students were supposed to be rich but act poor and listen to music that made you depressed and therefore a more authentic pauper. but the line had been blurred thanks to over generous government funding for education. now only those who are prepared to take on £30k debt or have rich parents go to university and we're back where we started. well let me tell you, irony has no place in dance music.

true ravers will seek out the old skool, so this mix is for them.
