Vanaf het moment dat jodium werd beschreven in 1814 was duidelijk dat het bijzondere eigenschappen had. In de beginperiode werd het in de geneeskunde toegepast in vaak hoge doseringen. Juist door het gebruik van die hoge doseringen kwam het in een negatief daglicht. De ontdekking dat het struma of krop kon verhelpen werd rond 1850 dan ook niet geaccepteerd. Het duurde uiteindelijk nog eens 70 jaar voordat de tijd rijp was om dit te accepteren. Onderzoek toonde aan dat het gebruik van 4 gram jodium op jaarbasis struma kon verminderen en voorkomen.

Vanaf dat moment zijn er nu al bijna 100 jaar programma's om jodiumgebrek te voorkomen. Vaak wordt het toegevoegd aan keukenzout of zuivelproducten. Het is teleurstellend dat ook 100 jaar later Europa nog steeds 272 miljoen mensen telt met een onvoldoende jodiuminname, waarvan 6 miljoen Nederlanders. De redenen daarvoor zijn divers.

De website Jodiumtekort is bedoeld om meer bekendheid te geven aan het bestaan van jodiumbrek, niet alleen in ontwikkelingslanden maar juist ook in ontwikkelde landen. Ook Nederland wordt geconfronteerd met tekorten ondanks de overvloed van voeding. Het is zeer verontrustend dat na 100 jaar nog steeds jodiumgebrek kan bestaan.Jodiumgebrek heeft verstrekkende gevolgen voor de gezondheid zoals recente WHO-rapporten laten zien.

Wij zetten ons in om het bestaan van voedingstekorten, in het bijzonder jodiumtekort, beter onder de aandacht te brengen van politiek, beleidsmakers, de medische professie en de burgers. Daarnaast streven wij naar de oprichting van een kenniscentrum waarin alle expertise die noodzakelijk is om dit probleem op de juiste manier aan te pakken samenkomt, eerst regionaal en hopelijk uiteindelijk nationaal.

Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften

Abrupt ist gerade* das zwanzigste Jahrhundert zu Ende gegangen. War es die Epoche der Weltrevolution oder war es, wie ein konservativer Geist meinte „der europäische Bürgerkrieg“, gleichviel: vorbei ist es so oder so.

Eine neue Zeit bricht an, und nirgends so stürmisch wie bei den Deutschen. Ein normales Volk unter den Völkern in einem normalen Staat unter den Staaten, das hatten wir noch nie. Und immer noch in der Mitte Europas. Ganz ungewohnt: Wir werden uns nicht mehr mit uns und mit dem Naheliegenden begnügen können. An unsere Geschichte müssen wir jetzt wieder in der ersten, statt bloß in der dritten Person denken. Die Welt ist nicht mehr, was sie war, und wir auch nicht. Unsern Platz müssen wir, wie die andern Völker auch, selbst bestimmen.

Der Pädagogenstand, Mehrer des Fortschritts und Wahrer guter Gesinnung, hat von alldem noch nichts gemerkt. Er zehrt weiter, schlecht oder recht, am Vermächtnis des Jahres Achtundsechzig. Sind aber nicht gerade die Kinder, mehr noch als die andern, Kinder ihrer Zeit? „Weiter so“ ist schon an ruhigen Tagen keine Losung, die der Pädagogik zu Gesicht stünde. Doch im Moment der Zeitenwende macht sie sich damit ganz unmöglich.

Nicht das Kapital ist zusammengebrochen. Seine zivilisatorische Mission war wohl noch nicht erschöpft: Der Welt-Markt liegt erst noch vor uns.

Das nachindustrielle Zeitalter läßt auf sich warten, die Postmoderne ist schon wieder vorbei. Die Welt, in der wir leben, stellt sich neuerlich dar, als was sie ist: bürgerliche Gesellschaft.

Durchbruch

Doch der Charakter der bürgerlichen Zeit ist Krisis. Sie ist das Tor, das aus der Naturnotwendigkeit hinausführt ins Reich der Freiheit - oder in die Barbarei. Die Krisis ‚äußert’  sich als Revolution in Permanenz: Jede noch verbliebene Naturschranke wird beiseite geschoben, noch die letzte Naturfessel wird abgestreift wie eine Schlangenhaut, eine nach der andern.

Ihre nacheinander eingerichteten Gesellschaftsbildungen haften der Menschheit an wie Häute, in denen sich ihre Anpassung an die - je durch Arbeit modifizierte - Natur materialisiert hat zu so und sovielen Bedürfnissen und „Eigenschaften“ der Menschen selbst. Die Menschen machen ihre Geschichte nicht aus freien Stücken. Die Tradition aller toten Geschlechter lastet wie ein Alb auf dem Gehirne der Lebenden. Aber die Menschen machen ihre Geschichte selbst. Sie können sich häuten, wenn und weil sie es wollen.

Der Charakter der bürgerlichen Epoche ist Revolution in Permanenz. Theoretisch ausgesprochen hat sie ihn in der Wissenschaftslehre - als der „pragmatischen Geschichte“ davon, wie ‚das Ich’ sich immer wieder „selbst setzt“ im ‚praktischen Erzeugen einer gegenständlichen Welt’ - als seinem Spiegel. [1]

Die Geschichte davon, wie es ein ‚Selbst’ wird, indem es die Welt zu seiner Aufgabe macht; wie es seine Zukunft zu dem macht, was ihm zukommt.

Je dringender aber die bürgerliche Welt nach ihrer Zukunft fragt, umso unabweisbarer wird ihr ihre Herkunft zum Problem. Führt ein gerader Weg von ihrem Woher zu ihrem Wohin? Waren die Bewegungsgesetze ihrer Gegenwart schon die Bildungsgesetze ihrer Entstehung? Nur wenn ihre Entwicklungslogik immanent, und wenn die bürgerliche Verkehrsweise in sich selbst begründet ist, läßt sich aus ihrem Heute auch ihr Morgen hochrechnen. Anderfalls bleibt ihre Zukunft in der Schwebe.

Jene Selbstreflexion der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft auf ihre Ursprünge war die Kritik der politischen Ökonomie gewesen - als Durchführung des Programms der Wissenschaftslehre am Spezialfall der Bildung des Kapitalverhältnisses. Sie beschrieb nicht einfach, wie das ‚System’ der bürgerlichen Ökonomie „funktioniert“, sondern sie zeigte, daß sein Funktionieren auf einer sachlichen Bedingung beruht, die durch das System nicht begründet werden kann, weil sie es selbst begründet: die Trennung des Arbeitsvermögens von den Arbeitsmitteln, alias „die sogenannte ursprüngliche Akkumulation“. Es ‚basiert’' auf einem historischen Faktum, nicht auf einem Gesetz.[2] Aber Fakta sind vergänglich.

Und weiter!

Da sie so aus ihren heutigen Bewegungsregeln ihre zukünftige Entwicklungsrichtung nicht einfach extrapolieren kann, kommt sie sich nach vorn hin offen vor. Ihre Krisis erscheint ihr als Progressus in infinitum. Sie weiß zwar, daß es irgendwo „hin“ geht. Aber sie weiß nicht, wo das liegt. Sie fühlt sich unterwegs, aber sie weiß nicht die Richtung. Sie weiß nur, daß da irgendeine „sein muß“.

Das Hier und das Jetzt der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft heißen immer: plus ultra.

Für den Einzelnen bedeutet das: Er muß sein Leben führen - denn es versteht sich nicht mehr von selbst. Und wenn es nach vorne offen ist, muß er seine Bestimmung suchen - nämlich da, wo er nicht ist.

Ist ihm sein Ziel nicht ‚gegeben’, so kann er es auch nicht sehen - nicht einmal als ‚Idee’; nicht, wie es aussieht, noch wo es liegt. Er ahnt nur, daß eins da sein muß. Darum steht er nicht einmal, sondern immer vor der Frage: Wo soll ich hin? Wie geht es weiter? Und das heißt immer bloß: Was ist der nächste Schritt? An einem spanischen Kloster steht die Inschrift: No hay caminos; hay que caminar. Oder wie der Tatmensch Oliver Cromwell das ausgedrückt hat: Einen Mann trägt sein Roß nie weiter, als wenn er nicht weiß, wohin er reitet. - Sein Ziel ist dann nämlich nur: weiter vorn.

Ein ewig gegenwärt'ges Nun

Doch „wenn man nicht weiß, wohin man geht, weiß man bald auch nicht mehr, wo man sich befindet“[3]. So schlägt die Permanenz der bürgerlichen Krisis sich erlebens-wirklich nieder als permanente Selbstreflexion - das ewige Fragen nach Wo, Woher und Wohin. Es ist die unablässige Neugeburt des transzendentalen Subjekts: Es ist nur in actu, es ist immer wieder „frei und neu in jedem Nun“[4]. Ansonsten ‚ist’ es nur formale Möglichkeit.

Es dauert nicht in Raum und Zeit. Es kann sich nicht ‚rechtfertigen’ durch bleibende Werke. Es muß sich bewähren stets aufs neue. Es ‚ist’ nicht erbrachte Leistung, sondern höchstens stete Bereitschaft, zu leisten. Es rechtfertigt sich „allein aus dem Glauben“, als daz fünklîn,[5] das nur leuchtet, wenn ich es anschaue. „'Ich bin' heißt, ich befinde mich in allgemeiner Relation, oder ich wechsle - es ist das Glied des Wechsels überhaupt: erstes Spiel.“[6]

Ein ‚Ziel’ - ein Unbedingtes, bei dem er stehenbleiben; ein Absolutes, bei dem er sich beruhigen könnte - ist dem modernen Menschen nicht „sichtbar“; ist nicht im Raum noch in der Zeit. Und doch soll es ihm „irgendwie“ präsent sein! Nämlich als Maßstab seines jeweiligen Handelns, hier und jetzt. „Moral ist die Zuordnung jedes Augenblickszustandes unseres Lebens zu einem Dauerzustand.“[7] Aber er kanns nicht behalten und kanns nicht vergessen, und faßt er es ganz, so kann ers nicht messen. „Das einzig mögliche Absolute, das uns gegeben werden kann“, ist „die unendlich freie Tätigkeit in uns“. Es „läßt sich nur negativ erkennen, indem wir handeln und finden, daß durch kein Handeln das erreicht wird, was wir suchen“. [8] Und mit den Worten des Cherubinischen Wandersmanns: Je mehr du nach ihm greifst / je mehr entwird er dir.

Als ob

„Ich glaube nicht, daß Gott da war, sondern daß er erst kommt. Aber nur,

wenn man ihm den Weg kürzer macht als bisher.“

Se. Erlaucht wies das mit den würdigen Worten zurück: „Das ist mir zu hoch.“

Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften

Dieses Paradox wird gewöhnlich veranschaulicht durch die Metaphern „Ideal“ und „unendliche Annäherung“. Aber solche Bilder verdunkeln mehr, als sie erhellen.

Da ist kein ‚Punkt’, dem es näherzukommen gälte, früher oder später, mehr oder weniger. Sondern da ist ein Wert, der gilt - jetzt und überhaupt. Man ‚hat’ ihn nicht als Aktiv- posten, sondern wie einen Stachel. Er gilt, indem ich jederzeit so handle, als ob die Welt „jetzt schon“ nach einem göttlichen Heilsplan eingerichtet wäre. Wenn alle so handelten, als ob es eine göttliche Weltregierung gäbe, dann - gäbe es eine göttliche Weltregierung.

Doch die Verhältnisse, sie sind nicht so. Und so kann ich auch nicht messen, wie weit mich mein Handeln jenem idealen Zustand „nahegebracht“ hat. Ich kann nur wissen, daß ich so gehandelt habe, als ob... Wenn aber das Resultat kläglich ausfiel, dann wird mich das bekümmern; doch reuen muß es mich nicht.

Mehr noch als die Geschichte der Gattung ist so der Lebensplan jedes Einzelnen Sinngebung des Sinnlosen. Die Welt ist ‚alles, was der Fall ist’. Ein Sinn ist darin noch keiner. Mein Leben in der Welt dagegen ist so, wie es sein soll - oder nicht. Anderer Sinn wird sich in der Welt nicht auffinden lassen.

Das Unbefriedigende daran ist, daß man das Ende nie zu fassen kriegt. Immer greift man ins Leere. Da ist kein Stoffliches, vulgo „Inhalt“, in dieser Moral, woran man sich halten könnte. Sie ist die Ausbreitung einer einzigen Tautologie - zu einem Paradox.

Durch einander

Die ganze Philosophie ist aber so eine Tautologie. Sie besteht nur in der Auflösung eines tautologischen Satzes in einen Gegensatz. Jener Satz heißt a = a, oder „was ist, ist“, und ist landläufig als ‚Satz der Identität’ bekannt. Einen Sinn hat er freilich nur, wenn damit „eigentlich“ eine - Nichtidentität gemeint ist. Dann heißt er so: Das Eine ist ‚es selbst’ durch ein Andres; soll gelten als das Andre.[9] Etwa so: Das Unendliche soll endlich sein; oder: Das Unbedingte soll bedingt werden; oder auch, Was ist, soll einen Sinn haben. - Dann ist er nicht Feststellung einer Tatsache, sondern Stellung einer Aufgabe.

In der Geschichte der abendländischen Philosophie ist jene Aufgabe als das Problem der „Einheit von Subjekt und Objekt“ formuliert und formalisiert worden. Aber so, als ob seine Lösung irgendwann einmal gelingen müßte. Doch kann ich den „Gegensatz des Bewusstseins“ lediglich ‚praktisch’ als gegenstandslos behandeln - nämlich im Moment der Tat selbst, wo im Vollzuge ‚Subjekt’ und ‚Objekt’, Sinn und Sein, das Gegebene und die Aufgabe, der ‚Stoff’ und die ‚Form’ wirklich in einem Punkt zusammenfallen. Die Lösung ‚gelingt’ immer nur actu: während der Tat, doch schon nicht mehr in ihrem Produkt; und hernach ist alles so offen wie je zuvor. Die Lösung der Aufgabe ist immer wieder nur die Aufgabe selbst.

Der dialektische Schein

Und wenn ich es recht bedenke, ist der ‚Gegensatz des Bewußtsein’ auch theoretisch ein bloßer Schein. Im wirklichen Leben kommen überhaupt nur Handlungen vor. Ohne das wäre ein ‚Objekt’ uns ebensowenig gewärtig wie ein ‚Subjekt’. Die Handlungen sind das Reale am wirklichen Leben. Was aber „in Begriffen dargestellt wird, ruht“[10]. ‚Subjekt’ und ‚Objekt’ sind theoretische Bestimmungen, die eine abstrahierende Reflexion im nachhinein in meine Anschauung hineingetragen hat. Sie stammen nicht aus dem natürlichen Bewußtsein, sondern sind selbst schon Wissenschaft.

Doch reden wir hier ja nicht vom natürlichen Bewußtsein „überhaupt“, sondern von der Gemütslage des modernen, des bürgerlichen Menschen. Und den zeichnet es allerdings aus, daß er eben - reflektiert. Es ist ihm ja nichts mehr selbstverstündlich, kein Gegebenes und kein Aufgegebenes. Die beseufzte „Verwissenschaftlichung des Alltags“ hat diesen Grund: Er muß  fragen - nach einem Wozu. Und prompt zerfällt ihm die Wirklichkeit in ein Ich und in ein Nichtich. Um die Unschuld ists geschehn.

Der antiquierte Mensch ist mit sich selbst im Reinen und in jeder Nische zuhaus, wo es sich wohlsein läßt. Das ist die Gattung des Philisters. Sie ist zwar noch zahlreich, aber schon veraltet.

Sie ahnen es, und seither werden sie ihrer Unzufriedenheit nicht mehr Herr:

Es scheint, daß der brave, praktische Wirklichkeitsmensch die Wirklichkeit nirgends restlos liebt und ernst nimmt. Als Kind kriecht er unter den Tisch, um das Zimmer der Eltern, wenn sie nicht zu Hause sind, durch diesen genial einfachen Trick abenteuerlich zu machen; als Knabe sehnt er sich nach der Uhr; als Jüngling mit der goldenen Uhr nach der zu ihr passenden Frau; als Mann mit Uhr und Frau nach der gehobenen Stellung; und wenn er glücklich diesen kleinen Kreis von Wünschen zustande gebracht hat und ruhig darin hin und her schwingt wie ein Pendel, scheint sich sein Vorrat unbefriedigter Träume um nichts verringert zu haben. Wenn er sich erheben will, so gebraucht er dann ein Gleichnis - denn es kommt ihm anscheinend nur darauf an, etwas zu dem zu machen, was es nicht ist; was wohl ein Beweis dafür ist, daß er es nirgends lange aushält, wo immer er sich befinde.[11]

Der Philister ist eine aussterbende Spezies.

Eine komische Existenz

Der moderne Mensch ist ein Wanderer: An seinem Platz ist er immer fremd. Setzt er sich fest, fällt er aus seiner Bestimmung.[12] Das Endliche, das er nur immer hat, wird zur greifbaren Figur erst vorm Hintergrund des Unendlichen, das er haben soll und nicht haben kann. Gewärtig ist ihm das Endliche bloß als ein (zu kleines) Stücklein vom Absoluten. „Wir suchen überall das Unbedingte und finden immer nur Dinge.“[13] In seiner Welt ist er jenseits. Er ist selber das Paradox: Seine Gottheit ist diesseitig, sein Jenseits hier und jetzt, sein Alltag ist seine Offenbarung, seine Erkenntnis Ironie, denn „jeder Philosoph, der die Immanenz gegen die empirische Person geltend macht, ist ein Ironiker“[14]. Er partizipiert an der Ewigkeit, indem er weiß, daß er nur vorläufig ist.

Es ist die Anschauung des hier-und-jetzt-Gegebenen sub specie aeterni - so „als ob“ es ein Unbedingtes zu vergegenwärtigen habe -, die die Romantiker Ironie genannt haben. „Der Humor, als das umgekehrte Erhabene, vernichtet nicht das Einzelne, sondern das Endliche durch den Kontrast mit der Idee.“[15] Gemessen an der ‚unendlichen Aufgabe’ wird alles Reale, jedes einmal fertige Produkt, das im Raum und in der Zeit vorkommt, komisch: Verglichen mit dem, was es vorstellen soll, wirkt es gemein - und rührend zugleich.

„Ironie ist die Form des Paradoxen“, sie repräsentiert den „unauflöslichen Widerstreit des Unbedingten und Bedingten“[16]. Durch sie erst „wird das eigentümlich Bedingte allgemein interessant und erhält objektiven Wert“[17]. „Sie ist die freieste aller Lizenzen, denn durch sie setzt man sich über sich selbst hinweg.“ [18]

Wo das empirische Ich aus sich heraustritt, sich über sich hinwegsetzt und von dort aus - auf sich zurückblickt: dort reden wir von Reflexion. Permanente Reflexion ist der Charakter der bürgerlichen Existenz. Sie ist deren reale Ironie, auch bei einem, dem aller Humor abgeht.

Mann ohne Eigenschaften

Was immer er erreichen will, es ist immer nur der nächstbeste Schritt auf seinem Weg ins Unendliche. Und hat er was erreicht, kehrt es sich gegen ihn als die nächste Schranke auf seinem Weg. Es hält ihn auf, es hält ihn fest, es schmiedet ihn an... das Endliche. Das richtige war es nur, solange er es nicht hatte. Kaum hält er es in Händen, da ist es schon falsch. „Das Endziel hat keine bestimmte Weise, es entwächst der Weise und geht in die Breite.“[19] Was immer er hat, es ist nicht genug. Immer ist er auf dem Weg zu einem andern Ufer. Und wo er sich niederläßt, da - schwebt er nur.

Was er je geworden ist - gemessen an dem, was er alles nicht ist, ist es viel zu wenig. Alle Eigenschaften, die er haben kann, sind ebensoviele Einschränkungen seiner Möglichkeiten: weniger Reichtum als Mangel. Seiner Bestimmung gerecht wird er erst als Mann ohne Eigenschaften. „Kinder sind deshalb am schönsten“, meint Hegel, weil „das Kind in seiner Lebhaftigkeit als die Möglichkeit von allem erscheint“.[20]

Das Kind ist das Urbild des modernen Menschen: Es hat noch keine Eigenschaften. Es fühlt sich im Möglichen nicht minder zuhaus als im Wirklichen; eher mehr. Sein - um mit Robert Musil zu reden - Möglichkeitssinn ist ihm präsenter als sein Wirklichkeitssinn: „Alles könnte auch ganz anders sein.“ Darum wurde das Kind zur großen Entdeckung der Romantik: „Der frische Blick des Kindes ist überschwänglicher als die Ahndung des entschiedensten Sehers“, und „ein Kind ist weit klüger als ein Erwachsener: das Kind muß durchaus ironisches Kind sein“.[21]

Aber auch als Urbild ist es doch bloß ein Bild.

Mögen es sein frischer Blick und der „leichte Sinn für das Zeitliche“ (Fichte) auch auf vertrauten Fuß mit dem Unendlichen setzen - aber es ‚strebt’ ja nicht in der Welt, die „der Fall ist“. Sein Überschwang hält sich in den Grenzen einer ‚Welt’ ad usum Delphini: einer Kunstwelt des harmlosen Scheins. Da kostet es nichts, sich alles „ganz anders“ zu denken. Es ist Gedanken-Spielerei.

Unternehmer an der Grenze

Wirkliches Streben in der Welt der Tatsachen ist Arbeit, nicht Spiel. Der Mensch, der bloß arbeitet, wird zum Philister. Er arbeitet, um sich an seiner Statt einzurichten. Er strebt, um zu haben. Er ist Krämer. Ein Unternehmer ist der, dem am Gewinnen noch mehr gelegen ist als am Gewinn.

Der eine mag typisch sein für unsere lausigen bürgerlichen Zustände; nämlich sofern alles beim Alten bleibt. Der andere ist charakteristisch für das bürgerliche Geschehen - insofern nämlich, als alles neu werden muß. Der Unternehmer ist ein Spieler in der Welt der Tatsachen. Er hält die Revolution permanent. Er ist der Romantiker, der sein Sach auf Nichts gestellt hat: der „auf eigne Faust lebende Mensch“[22].

Wo er nicht ist, dort ist sein Glück, und dahin ist er immer unterwegs. Er hat alles stets noch vor sich. Er lebt an einer Grenze, die nur da ist, damit er sie übertritt.

So weit als die Welt

So mächtig der Sinn

So viel Fremde er umfangen hält

So viel Heimat ist ihm Gewinn.[23]

Das ist das Menschenbild, das der Erziehung an der Jahrtausendwende vorzuschweben hat ; als Stachel, nicht als zu erfüllendes Maß. Nicht als Vorbild, wonach der Pädagoge seinen Zögling modelt, sondern als ein Gleichnis, in dem er sich selbst erkennt.

Wenn nicht einmal die Pädagogen Unternehmer wären - ja wer denn dann?

He taxes too much. If you vote for him you’ll be homeless. If you vote for the other one, your children will starve. But if you vote for the first guy, they’ll lose all their education and become stupid rejects, begging for day-old scraps behind the ghetto bakery. But the other guy will take your job. And the other one will tax your new raise so you actually come home with $5 less every week. One of them will date your mom. The other will shut down her nursing home. One will have dinner with terrorists at Arby’s while the other just sends him a check at Christmas, even though they don’t celebrate Christmas.

Here’s what I’m saying: There are bigger issues than whose face is on the front page. Every day 6000 kids are killed by mid-term or later abortion. They refuse to allow Bibles in schools, so Christian parents teach home school, allowing their children to learn math and moral values at the same time. While the schools are taking a massive dump when it comes to value and ethics and crime and teaching self-worth, the state of California just outlawed Christians from their God-given right to teach their own kids. Now they have to send them to the cesspool of a school that will teach anti-creation science, thereby infringing on the rights of students to practice their own religion freely (but don’t worry, they won’t attack Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, agnostics, pagans, wiccans, Scientologists, etc. Just the Christians.)

Let’s see, what else? Lets talk about gay marriage. I’m all for gays to have the right to choose their lifestyle- its their choice. (Just like my kids schooling used to be.) But I’m not for the whole gay-marriage thing. Sure, they can practice it, but that doesn’t really make it a marriage. I know, I know, they’ve redefined what “marriage” is, but it used to be a union before God between a man and a woman. Since most homosexuals don’t believe in or care for God, they can’t really have a union before Him that He will honor. But, what they hey, they ignored my right to practice my faith (only if it’s from the Christian Bible) by ignoring the 1^st amendment, why not ignore the other principals too.

So who is going to do what to help me out? Am I personally going to benefit from either party being elected? Maybe, but probably not. There aren’t a whole lot of things that are going to actually make a difference in the way I daily live my life. I could be wrong, but here’s how I look at it:

If one side is accused of overtaxing and the other of allowing abortions, I will sacrifice a couple bucks, even a couple hundred, per year to vote for the sanctity of life.

If one side is accused of sending jobs overseas and the other of limiting free speech, I’m probably going to have to go for free speech. There will always be a need for jobs on the US. They may not be the best, but we have too many people not to need a ton of jobs. We also have a lot of politicians going after free speech, even though the ones attacked are the churches and the right. Hmm.

If one side wants to build a thousand mile fence at the borders and the other wants to let gays marry, I will go for the fence. Those guys are great climbers and if they can get in through, over or under a military fence, then they deserve to stay. For those that can’t, they can still come here, but have to go through the legal process. Meanwhile, I stand up for what I believe regarding gay marriage. I’m not anti-gay, but I’m not pro-gay. I’m just ok-gay; they can do their thing, but I don’t want tax dollars going toward something I find immoral.

Bottom line, I can’t do anything about the politicians. But, then again, I will probably never have to answer to them. I will, however, have to answer to God. I will stand before Him and be able to say that I voted for the things and the principles that are on His side, His Law, and His eternal purpose. I will say that I stood up for hundreds of thousands of innocent children and supported their right to life. I will say that I voted against the activity that led to His destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, the activities that He calls an abomination. I will be able to say that I stood up for His Word, His teaching, for the right to exhibit by faith, to speak freely the gospel. I will say, “Jesus, I stood up for you.”

-Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

The last mentioned of the Fruit of the Spirit, self control is the one most people would probably prefer to leave out. It can often be the hardest to practice, and it encompasses all the preceding Fruit of the Spirit. Perhaps that is why it was mentioned last; to leave it afresh in your mind. We know that a lack of SELF-CONTROL has a detrimental effect on us, but it also affects our relationships; those we come into contact with.

~Proverbs 25:28- Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.

Without self-control in our lives, we become vulnerable to all kinds of problems. Anything out of CONTROL in your life can harm others and cause damage in relationships. Including (but not limited to):

-Uncontrolled anger

-Uncontrolled lust

-Uncontrolled spending (The #1 cause for divorce is financial stress & money problems)

-Uncontrolled drinking

-Uncontrolled ambition (The workaholic who’s never at home with the family)

-Uncontrolled tongue

~How do we obtain self-control? Here are 9 key ways that will help in maintaining your self-control:

1) Master your moods- Keep you attitude in check, do what’s right even when you don’t feel like it; live by commitment, not by emotions

2) Watch your words-Put your mind in gear before you talk.

-Proverbs 13:3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

3) Restrain your reaction- How much can you take before you lose your cool?

-Proverbs 19:11 A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

4) Stick to the plan- If you don’t determine how your time is spent, others will; Remember though, we are to follow God’s will & His plan 1^st. Have control enough to be in it.

-Ephesians 5:15-17 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.

5) Manage your money- learn to live on less than you make; invest the rest. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go, instead of wondering where it went.

6) Maintain your health- (to the best of your ability) Thus, you can accomplish more & enjoy your achievements.

-Psalm 38:3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin.

7) Avert your eyes- This one’s tough. You can’t control everything you see, but you can control how much you look at it

-Matthew 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (I’m pretty sure the same standard applies to ladies looking at men; sorry, you’re not off the hook)

8) Don’t allow anger to bring sin- like it plainly says in Ephesians 4:26, "In your anger do not sin" God let us know that we will get angry, but we must release the pressure before the top blows, no matter how we’ve been wronged.

-1 Thessalonians 5:15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

9) Know when to “Cork the Bottle”- The Bible doesn’t specifically say that we can never drink, but it’s clear that we are not to get drunk.

-Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

~Now, where do you need self-control?

 Discipline today will help you determine success tomorrow. We must realize that we cannot accomplish this on our own, but we need Holy Help.

-2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

The key to self-control, is giving up control to God. With Him in the driver’s seat, you’re sure to get where you need to be. The more our progression, the further He’ll take us.

-Matthew 25:23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

 There is tremendous potential to be used in positive ways that honor Christ. In reality, we are still subject to sin and death. Although we are not totally evil ourselves, we are still susceptible to weakness & fleshy desires. Our body can be used for good if the flesh is not in control.

-Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship..

~How can we be living sacrifices?

-Self-discipline isn’t in our nature. Spirit-Control, not self-control, makes the difference. The Holy Spirit can control the things I can’t. Ask God to help you, through the Holy Spirit, to help you do right in His eyes.

-Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

-Open the door to let the Holy Spirit fill you, and close the door of flesh to Satan by confessing sin & claiming Christ’s crucifixion.

-Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

-Renew your mind with God’s word

-Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

-Allow the Holy Spirit to help you master your emotions (with the fruit of the Spirit); Present yourself as an instrument of righteousness.

  -Romans 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

  -Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, & strength.

 -Mark 12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

-The key to self-control is surrendering control. Surrender your control to God; allow Him to move in your life. Who better to run your life, than the One who made your life?
