There are not a lot of exciting things happening this week. I am starting to think about what I need to have ready for a quilt show in Elizabethtown, KY. It is the 19th and 20th, but I will leave on the 18th to go get set up. The dyeing, painting and printing class that I have been doing SO much preparation for is cancelled at the Rend Lake facility. I was so looking forward to teaching this class, but there will be another time, and I have a bunch of new cool fabrics!

I am working on a new sample. The pattern is Kimonos by Betty Blais of Embellishment Village. Most people would probably use oriental fabrics for this pattern, but I am using my hand dyed fabrics. See...

I will probably make a couple of other blocks using different fabrics. I am also planning on painting some sky fabrics to sell with patterns from the Accidental Landscapes series. And there are probably a few other small samples to make. I sell Angelina fibers and film, paintstiks and accessories, beads and beading supplies, surface design books, as well as patterns, kits and fabrics. I plan my booth to offer items for the quilter interested in trying something new and, so that it will offer items other vendors might not have. I will be demo-ing paintstiks, Angelina products, and foiling with some new glue and foiling glue pen products. I am really looking forward to this show. Last year was the first year I vended and the reception from the quilters was very good.

It is cooling off here some this morning and I am thinking about getting outside and creating some more dye painted cloth. I have some ideas I want to try.

Keep making art!

Imagine getting a perso

This article first appeared in The W Weekly in Lexington, Kentucky in 2005.

Imagine getting a personal invite to play a friendly game of baseball with none other than The Strokes and Kings Of Leon. To many music fans, this is the stuff that dreams are made of. However, Matt Pelham, lead singer of The Features, had more important business to atten d to. Taking care of his twin daughters.

After speaking with Pelham, it instantly becomes clear that this grounded approach to his personal life carries over into The Features as well. One would think that after releasing their album Exhibit A on Universal Records, performing overseas to crowds of over 7,000 people, and making their nationwide television debut on Jimmy Kimmel that the early stages of fame might go to their heads. However, The Features are still the same group of friends who just want to make music on their own terms without conforming to industry stereotypes by “wearing skin tight pants” in order to sell more records.

The Features formed in Sparta, Tennessee in 1993 as a group of friends who simply wanted to make music. After a few shows in neighboring Murfreesboro, they joined the likes of Self and Fluid Oz. on Spongebath Records. The group slowly became a staple of the town’s live music scene, drawing in fans with their energetic live performances and sing-along choruses. After Spongebath disbanded, two friends at the label decided to co-manage them and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Features sound is made up of suspenseful verses, soaring choruses, and the pervasive retro synthesizers of keyboardist Parrish Yaw. While many bands may have a keyboardist for aesthetics, none feature it as prominently as The Features. Yaw’s melodic lines add a key element to the group that rounds out their sound, whether it’s adding to the wall of sound that make up their choruses or filling in rhythmic space of the verses.

If you haven’t already heard their music, their website is the place to go. The site is unique in that it is divided into two sections. One for the typical information one can expect from a band’s website, and the other a more personalized blog written by the group where fans can find everything from demos from the new album to exclusive photos of drummer Hollum Haas during a chance meeting with Metallica’s Lars Ulrich.

Despite being a self-described “quiet guy,” Pelham leaves most of his quiet persona behind once he hits the stage. The result is a visually captivating performance of the group “where their most comfortable.” One can expect to see Haas beat the drums with a death wish while Pelham employs his trademark “back up and scream at the mic” technique at the height of his verses. Even the little things like the askew manner in which Pelham holds his guitar can be quite pleasing to see.

If you’re a new fan, don’t worry because their songs are accessible enough to sing along to at their show, even if you don’t know them by heart. Their single, “Blow It Out,” for example, features a breezy and unforgettable “doo doo doo” line between verses, and there is even a clap-along chorus to their song “See You Though.”

Despite how lively the group is during their set, the guys are back to their reserved selves once the music stops so don’t expect too much between song banter. This comes not as a product of stage fright, but rather that he “doesn’t know those people,” Pelham explains. He joking mentions that he “hopes to be able to tell a story between songs in ten years.” Until then, there are plenty of great Features songs to listen to.

The Features will be at The Dame on Saturday, March 25. The show starts at 9 p.m. and cover is $5. Their current album, Exhibit A, is available on Universal Records.

Not For the Faint of Heart
Comedian Doug Stanhope comes to Lexington

Imagine living with an offbeat poet/ex-preacher named Father Luke, your chain-smoking mother, and your bald girlfriend named Oddjob who has a laundry li st of mental disorders, all while trying to fend off scabies in Bisbee, Arizona.

This isn’t the newest reality TV show of the season; it’s real life for Doug Stanhope. A self proclaimed “lover of losers,” Stanhope prefers to surround himself with characters to whom most people wouldn’t even give the time of day. It’s just one of the many facets that make Doug Stanhope one of today’s most tasteless yet brilliant stand-up comedians.

If the name sounds at all familiar, you probably will remember him as the former co-host of Comedy Central’s “Man Show”. He has also appeared in several “Girls Gone Wild” videos, and most recently had a spot in the film The Aristocrats. He currently spends most of his time performing at comedy clubs and rock venues, spreading the insanity that is his life all across the country.

Stanhope got his start in comedy by taking chances, and it hasn’t failed him yet. After dropping out of school after 9th grade because “it was boring,” he moved to California at age 18 to become an actor. When that didn’t work out, he performed at open mics in Las Vegas comedy clubs simply because he thought that was just as funny as anyone else. Since those early days, he has managed to grow into an accomplished comedian, while his personality remains vulgar as ever.

Hitting the stage armed with a fresh beer, plenty of Marlboros, and a sense of humor that could easily offend even the most open-minded of club goers, he often warns the crowd that his live show is “like leading you into battle…you’re not all going to be here at the end.” Stanhope’s abrasive humor is a blend of shock value and carefully crafted punch lines covering sensitive subject matter ranging from religion to sex toys. After building up sympathy for a tale of how he and his wife had to have an abortion, he then stunned the audience by exclaiming that he only did it because he “really wanted to see what it felt like to kill a baby.”

What’s even more shocking than the jokes themselves is that fact that the inspiration for his twisted brand of comedy comes from “true life experiences.” In the midst of listening to a story of how he narrowly escaped being robbed by an angry transvestite hooker, you start to realize that this really happened to him.

When he’s not on the road, Stanhope spends his time “hanging out and going to thrift stores.” Noting that since most people think that what he does for a living is fun, he considers other people’s work to be like “weed whacking.” Stanhope includes the more interesting parts of his daily life, such as breakups, scabies infections, and drug-related escapades all on his website so fans can keep tabs on him.

If you’re looking to return from Fall Break with some stories to tell, check out one of Doug Stanhope’s many shows next week. He will be performing at Comedy Off Broadway from October 5-8, along with native Kentucky comedian Cleveland. Ticket prices range from $9.50-$15.50. However, if you are easily offended you have been warned. For more information check out: www.dougstanhope.com.

This picture has nothing to do with what I'm about to write. I found it and felt it was just so damn rediculous that it had to be shared with the world. And also, I sort of want to do this to one of my trees.

Before you read the rest of this little post, I'm going to need you to go back and read my previous warning.

All done?

Good. You may continue.

So my revelation the other day about one miserable side effect of a deffective ICD got me close to my highest reader count of all time. My actual highest reader day was on Thursday, May 3rd, 2007. This is mind blowing to me because while I've had this blog spot saved for a couple of years, I didn't actually start writing in it until a few weeks ago. Who knows what brought people to my site in droves back then? Maybe word got out there was an image of the virgin Mary or something? She does occasionally need a place to crash between potato chip appearances, so I've offered her my blog.

In addition to high readership, I got a few phone calls and 22 e-mails (if you count messages from other social sites as well) about that post. But only two of you had the guts to post a comment publicly. High fives to Michele and Dawn.

In one particular phone call from she who must not be named (and if you want to think I am friends with Lord Voldemort's wife, that's fine by me), I was asked if the KY product was really that disappointing. In short, yes.

Here is the official critique and another embarassing confession.

The stuff almost has no smell at all. If you have a hyper-sensitive nose like I do, first and foremost, I'm sorry. Second, you might detect the faintest smell of menthol. This is not a criticism. I'm glad it doesn't smell.

The pink tube is labled "Mine" and the blue tube is labled "Yours." This makes me think that the KY company knows fully well women are the ones who are going to waste their money on this. And hey, they're right. But I'm not sure how I feel about that.

The big question from Lady Voldemort: Did it feel good?

Well, yes and no. Of course it felt good to have him rub Mine on me and I'm sure he liked me rubbing Yours on him. (See, I told you the directions were a little quirky. And don't you feel a little violated that you've been dragged into this?) - but it didn't feel any different than rubbing anything else on. Canola oil was an example I gave, drawing from the theoretical world again, of course.

When Yours and Mine met, there wasn't any additional sensation either. And here's where the embarassing confession comes in...

When it was over, there was the obligatory and mutual, "Whew, that was good" as sweaty bodies disengaged and breaths were caught.

Despite 10 years of togetherness, I still can't read the man's mind. But I can tell you what I was thinking. As someone who occasionally wakes up to find parts of her body missing - or at least, their sensation (can't feel an arm here, a leg there, no eyesight on one side, etc...) - only to have them return like the prodigal son days or weeks later with no explanation of their where abouts, I was more than just a little concerned that I'd lost feeling in my Lady Business. Had I stopped to think about it, though, I probably would have realized I wouldn't have felt the rest of 'all that' either. Fortunately I'm not an alarmist and I didn't make a big deal out of it. Actually, I made no deal what so ever.

Then a couple of nights later, we retired to the boudoir after what felt like a long day of toiling in random tool aisles of Home Depot. We were both bored and a little restless. "Do you want to try the new KY again?" I asked.

I realize it's not a sexy way to propisition your man, but I wasn't looking for romantic encounters - just something to pass the time.

He thought about it a second and said, "Nah." Then quickly added, "I mean, we can if you want to."

"Not really," I said.

It was then that I realized we'd gone 2 whole days without saying what we were both thinking. "So that stuff didn't do anything for you either, huh?"

"Not so much."

So I'm happier to report than you are to hear that I can still feel what goes on below the c-section scar.

For those of you who read this far expecting Dr. Seuss verse or a Big Mama sighting, sorry to disappoint.

Palin is the latest G.O.P. distraction. She’s meant to shift attention away from the real issue of this campaign — the awful state of the nation after eight years of Republican rule. The Republicans are brilliant at distractions. Willie Horton was a distraction. The chatter about gays, guns and God has been a long-running distraction. And we all remember the Swift-boat campaign.

If you want a real issue, forget all of the above and revisit Monday’s front page of The New York Times. Hundreds of families are being forced out of their homes each month in Louisville, Ky., because of mortgage foreclosures. With record numbers of poor and homeless students, the public schools are struggling.

This has been my schedule for the last two weeks: work every day except Thursday and Sunday from 8 t

This has been my schedule for the last two weeks: work every day except Thursday and Sunday from 8 to 5, rush home to see Ky off to work, and last week, die because of my cold. I'm finally getting over it and am starting to have energy, but we've both had to work so much that we're fighting when we're together. It's like we have to not only re-learn how to be around each other, but we also have to work hard after a long day of working. It's difficult coming home after a long day of trying hard to be happy and cheerful and then come home and be happy and cheerful still. You know? I mean, I don't usually have to try hard to be that way, but lately it's been much more difficult.

Okay, but here's kind of my beef right now. Ky is the kind of person who is very, for lack of a better word, clingy. I am very much the opposite. I don't cling to anybody. I grew up very independent, pretty much always on my own, having to fend for myself. So, it's really, really hard for me to want to be with him when he's being so clingy. I can get past it...most of the time. Every once in a while, though, something will happen that drives me mad. Like he'll want to stunt his sleep and only get five hours just so he can wake up and be with me. Sweet, right? Well, too bad he's half asleep and dragging his feet wherever we go because he's so tired. I keep telling him that I would rather spend one good hour with him than four lousy hours with him. But he's so attached to me that he is the opposite, I think.

I don't know. Anyway, the reason for the title of the post is because I have realized lately that I'm trying to kind of mold him to be the kind of man I want him to be instead of the man he wants to be. I've been trying to push him into a sport or an activity of some kind. Granted, he keeps saying that he wants to do something, but I think I'm pushing him too hard. It seems like I'm always bugging him about it. I'm always asking him what he wants to do. I'm always asking him what he wants to do with me. I want so badly to get into something with him that we both like to do that we can do together, like a sport or something. He likes bike riding, and so do I. And we've been twice. Once in the Springs and once here.

I think the thing that really gets to me is that he doesn't seem to be a super motivated person. He says he wants to do certain things, but they never get done. And I'll admit, I'm the same way for the most part. But before I got sick and now that I'm getting better finally, I'm much better about that kind of stuff. I'll still procrastinate, especially if it's a really arduous task, I find that I generally don't do it. But the littler stuff I do. It's really frustrating to see the one you love go to work, come home, play computer, and go to bed. I want him to be more active, and not just at work because he has to be.

Am I crazy? HELP!
