Last term of LaunchPad, I taught at a church called Naladi (which also happens to be my Sesotho name...it means star). Throughout the term, we naturally developed relationships with our students. But one in particular grabbed my attention: Pat. His hunger for God was obvious and he was a leader of the class. For this term of LaunchPad, I am teaching a different class. I LOVE our new class, but I was sad to say goodbye to Naladi.

Last Monday, I had the opportunity to spend the day in Qwa Qwa. In the afternoon, we got to visit the LaunchPad class at Naladi! Abram, a Basotho staff member of Thrive Africa, now teaches the class.

While waiting for the class to begin, Pat walked in. I held out my hand to him (for an African handshake), but he gave me a huge, bear hug. I felt like I was reuniting with an old friend....I think that is because I was reuniting with an old friend.

It was GREAT to see the Holy Spirit at work within him. He still jotted notes in his book throughout the lesson. He still participated and loved hearing God's Word.

Even if I never see him again, I think I will always have a friend in Qwa Qwa.

LaunchPad today was AWESOME!! We have been expecting growth in our class, but clearly not as much as we should be. Today we had more than 75 students in our class, and about 35 new students! They all seemed to really get into the lesson and the newly implemented small group discussions. Next week, we are expecting the class to grow by another huge leap, as many students said they would bring their friends!

....Expect BIG things from God. Bigger than what you can imagine. There are no limits. That's what I'm learning.

Despite the large size of our class, I am being intentional about getting to know some of the students. Please pray for the entire class. It meets at a school called Mmakwane. But, if you would like to pray for individual students, here are some of the ones that I am getting to know...

Jeanette (a faithful, sweet, elderly woman that is BURSTING with smiles). This is a picture of me and Jeanette...

Lefu (a younger student who is one of the small group leaders...he is doing a GREAT job!) Here is me and Lefu...

Hans Tumelo (also a young small group leader)

Alina (a shy, sweet elderly lady)

Nimrod Thato (yes...that is his name. He is SO interested and willing to answer questions!)

So please keep them all, and us as we teach, in your prayers.

I can't WAIT to see all God does this term, and I'll keep you updated!

I'm sorry about the lack of posts lately. As you have probably noticed, for the past 3 or 4 weeks, I have been in a slump...a blogging slump, a journaling slump, a reading slump...

But I'm jumping back in.

A lot has been going on around here. It would be very long, and possibly boring, if I wrote an in-depth explanation of all that has happened in the past month. So, I am just going to give quick summaries and pictures (YAY!) Here goes...

We went on Safari! WOOO! It was amazing, and we saw all of the animals that you would expect: lions, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, rhinos, elephants, and much more.

We were able to go to Passion Conference in Johannesburg, featuring Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio. It was an awesome experience to worship with thousands of other believers in South Africa. We spent the weekend in the city, which was a HUGE blessing because we live on a farm, but I have always lived in a city. We went to the mall and movies there...two things that I have not done in 7 months!!

The interns put on assemblies in schools in Qwa Qwa ans Khalengyoni for one week to promote the beginning of Term 2 of LaunchPad. Hundreds of students came and were able to hear about the love and salvation of Jesus Christ! It was.....INCREDIBLE. I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of it.

LaunchPad began last week with a bang! The class I am teaching had 53 students, and we are only expecting it to grow. We are implementing a new format to the classes that includes small group discussions. The students seemed to love it!

Great things are planned for the weeks to come, and I can't WAIT to see how God moves!

....And I promise to write about all that's happening more often....

From Free Software Foundation. On the savannah, where the gnu roam... by mattl.

Asa Dotzler: shortcut to launch a specific firefox profile on mac. One thing that Windows users, and even Linux users, can do in Firefox is to create a shortcut to launch Firefox with a specific user profile. I do this myself since I've created several profiles during beta testing that I haven't killed off yet. But Mac users? They don't have shortcuts. They do have aliases, though, and Asa shows you how to create an alias on OSX that launches Firefox with a specific user profile. Of course he also lets Windows and Linux users know how to do this particular Firefox trick in case you haven't found it yet.

Launchpad News: Survey about Launchpad's upstream bug workflow. I know many of you won't give a flip about how Launchpad handles bugs, but many Ubuntu users do, and should know that you can link Launchpad bugs to other bugs, even if they're not hosted on Launchpad. So that bug you find in Evolution (the bug is hosted on Bugzilla) can be linked to a bug on Launchpad so folks working on things upstream can quickly and easily see work done by the Ubuntu community. This is also good for users who also experience the bug so they can know that the bug is definitely being worked on.

Matthew Helmke: An interview with Alan Pope. Matthew preents another Ubuntu Community Interview, this time with Alan Pope, the person behind the Ubuntu Screencasts project. Find out why he doesn't like forums and his one bit of advise to Ubuntu users. I swear that one belongs to a t-shirt. I hope Alan will grant permission to make the tee (when I get around to it).

I'm going to call that a full lid from me. Have a great weekend, y'all. I'll probably see you on Monday. I definitely have a few things I need to check out to see if they're things I want to post about.

U3 is a company producing a proprietary method of auto-launching applications from specially formatt

U3 is a company producing a proprietary method of auto-launching applications from specially formatted USB flash drives. Flash drives adhering to the U3 specification are termed U3 smart drives.

"U3 smart drives" differ from traditional USB flash drives because they come preinstalled with the U3 Launchpad, which looks similar to the Windows OS start menu and controls program installation. The method only works with recent Microsoft Windows systems. Applications are allowed to write files or information to the host computer, but this information must be removed when the flash drive is ejected. Customizations and settings are instead stored with the application on the flash drive.

U3 flash drives are USB flash drives with a specific hardware and software setup:

The hardware configuration causes Windows disk management to show two drives:

A read-only ISO 9660 volume on an emulated CD-ROM drive with an autorun configuration to execute the U3 LaunchPad, and

A standard flash drive (FAT formatted) that includes a hidden "SYSTEM" folder with installed applications.

U3 compliant applications can be (optionally) preloaded by manufacturers.

U3 Launchpad

U3 Launch Pad example.

The U3 Launchpad is a program manager that is preinstalled on every U3 smart drive, and is set to autoplay on insertion. A partition with the U3 Launchpad pretends to be a CD/DVD-ROM device in order to add USB mass storage device autoplay functionality on pre-Windows XP SP2 systems, or systems whose USB autoplay has been intentionally disabled.

Compatibility

The U3 Launchpad and U3 Applications runs on Windows 2000 SP4+, XP or newer. The U3 launchpad will work with Windows Vista as of version 1.4.0.2. Data will continue to be accessible from any OS capable of reading from USB Mass Storage Devices, unless the U3 device is password-protected. Compatibility issues have been noted as late as July 2007 under Windows XP Pro between certain Windows drivers that are associated with high-volume data transfers to CD writers and with certain drivers employed by digital video cameras, resulting in a full crash of the XP operating system. According to Sandisk's community forums, as of Feb '08 many users are still exhibiting Vista compatibility issues with U3 equipped flash drives regardless of the U3 launchpad version. Apparently this is related to specific hardware/firmware versions of the flash drive itself, as removing the U3 software will still not allow Vista to recognize the USB key. While Sandisk has claimed that a patch for the U3 is in the works, Microsoft has released an update to Vista (KB940199), allowing some users to successfully use the flash drive as intended. One of the affected USB Flash drives is the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium series with device numbers 2.17, 2.18, 2.19 and 2.20. By March 2008, SanDisk has released a new Launchpad update for these device versions of Cruzer Titanium that will make these devices fully compatible with Windows Vista. This will allow Vista users to both use the drive for data storage and the U3 functionality as they are used to under Windows XP, including the password protection.

Portability

Software can be taken with all its personalized settings to any computer running a compatible version of Microsoft Windows (though no other operating system), with no need to install the software if not already there, or to use different settings and options, and no need for administrator access privileges.

Software support

Software is available from the U3 site, including, amongst others Trillian (instant messaging client), OpenOffice.org, FileZilla, Mozilla Firefox, and Skype. Some recent software compatibility concerns have surfaced, including incompatibility of newer Firefox versions with U3. However, updated versions of programs have made an appearance, like in the case of Mozilla Firefox.

Ease of use

Programs are run from the Launchpad, functionally similar to the Windows Start menu familiar to most users of Windows XP.

No need of admin rights

New software can be downloaded to a U3 flash drive without the requirement for administrative privileges on the host computer. However, removal of the U3 launchpad requires administrative rights.

Virus protection

Many U3 drives come with virus protection software which gives protection against being infected by or spreading computer viruses.

Data security

Most U3 drives on the market feature a security lock within the U3 Launchpad. This loads the CD partition first and can be user-configured to require a password to be entered; otherwise the data partition will not load. The drive is supposed to seal itself after a certain number of invalid password entries, requiring a reformat.

Sandisk and Microsoft have recently announced a partnership to develop a new line of portable USB-based hardware. This series, purportedly named StartKey, is expected to replace U3 by the end of 2008, making the U3 format obsolete.

For work, SUSE Linux is now supported so I'm working on trying to use that in my day to day life. A problem I've run into to help w/ my Kubuntu work is getting bzr up and working correctly.

The major problem is python2.4 is the supported version and the current version of python for bazaar is 2.5. I could install a version of bzr that requires python 2.4 but will the branches (kubuntu-docs, ubuntu-docs, leonov) still work correctly? Can I commit eerything correctly back to Launchpad? Does launchpad require a specific version of bzr?

Currently running SLED 10.2 64 bit edition.

Stefano Forenza: Launchpad needs a Wiki. I'm kind of surprised Launchpad doesn't have a Wiki. It also needs to be hosted on the servers with Launchpad. To pay a third party just to host the wiki is silly, plus it you have to worry about the possibility of the server going down. Believe me, it does happen.
Let's forget for a minute how flat out rude that is. It also does absolutely nothing to further the software/operating system concerned. Let's start assisting users of software we use by making new users actually want to ask for help. Trashing someone simply because they are having a problem (let alone be cause they don't like the latest update) is pretty childish.

I know not everyone out there freelances, and not everyone who freelances wishes for coworkers. I am a freelancers but don't wish for coworkers at all, actually, as I enjoy working by myself. BUT it is fun to be around other creatives and in a work environment, hence the nationwide co-working trend. The other night at the mashable event (social networking), I met one of the guys who started Conjunctured, the coworking house on East 7th. It's gotten some TV news coverage and was the first of its kind in Austin, though now there's a second coworking space planned for downtown called LaunchPad.

Anyway, the Grand Opening is this Saturday and totally open to everyone. The invite is on facebook. I think the concept is cool, and free, open parties are always cool for meeting new people and exploring new things!

As a eventual contributor to Ubuntu [1] at Launchpad [2][4], sometimes I contribute with English->Portuguese translations. Well, sometimes I use a good tool known as Open-Tran [3], written by Jacek Sliwerski, to help me with technical or language specificities on translation.

The beautiful of this tool (open-tran) is the Python xml-rpc support. Then, translation can be done in this way:

#!/usr/bin/python
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
import sys
from xmlrpclib import ServerProxy

lang = "pt_br"
server = ServerProxy("http://open-tran.eu/RPC2")

if __name__ == "__main__":
    if sys.argv.__len__() == 2:
        for sugg in server.suggest(sys.argv[1],lang):
            print sugg
    else:
        print "Usage: %s <words_to_translate>" % sys.argv[0]
        sys.exit(1)

    sys.exit(0)

Now, I can translate a text:

translate.py "I feel happy"

Easily, yeah ?! ;)

Hello all,

I've been meaning to push the first version out, but I've run into a couple of problems that I need to take care of first. I've found a solution to the updating problem. I was having difficulty because the program was compiling a new version even though everything was up-to-date! Thankfully, the solution I've found has taken care of it, but I didn't exactly do it in a very pretty way (hey, it works at least). I've also started a bzr branch on Launchpad, so that's where I'm going to start putting my developmental code. I just need to figure out how that works as well!

Version 0.1a is coming very soon....

I just need to find the time (work is killing me) and figure out some good solutions to the current bugs and we'll be good to go!

Even though I’d very much like to say the opposite, most people will probably need help with X

Even though I'd very much like to say the opposite, most people will probably need help with Xubuntu at some point. Luckily, it is quite easy to find help - you just need to know where to look.

First of all, you need to determine what kind of problem you are having.

Getting started

If you are new to Xubuntu, you will want to read the excellent Xubuntu documentation, that is also shipped with Xubuntu (in version 8.04 it is located under
/usr/share/xubuntu-docs/index.html
). It should be your first stop when trying to figure out how to connect to the internet, how to install applications, and similar basic tasks. All this thanks to the huge, voluntary efforts of the Xubuntu Documentation Team (you can also help out with the Xubuntu documentation yourself!).

Of course, if you want to perform slightly more advanced tasks, such as setting up periodical backups on Xubuntu, the internet is your friend. There are a lot of great resources on the internet that can help you with anything from installing Xubuntu on the Eee PC to browsing Windows network shares with Thunar. However, be sure to double-check which version of Xubuntu the guide is written for. For example, the post on browsing Windows network shares I just linked to is, at the time of writing, a little outdated and contains unnecessary steps.

It is also safest to look for articles written specifically targeting Xubuntu - tutorials aiming at Ubuntu users will often work as well, articles targeting just "Linux" are less likely to result in success.

When you can't find the answer

If you've spent time roaming the dark alleys of the internet, spit through every last bit of Xubuntu's official documentation, but still don't have an answer, there are a number of support options.

One requirement for all these options is that you specify as much information as possible. This includes, but needn't be limited to, the fact that you're running/wanting to run Xubuntu, which version of Xubuntu you're running, what you're problem is, what the expected result is, and perhaps how proficient you are with Xubuntu. This allows other people to help you in the best possible way.

The xubuntu-users mailinglist is, well, a mailinglist for Xubuntu users. All messages sent to a certain email address (
xubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com
in the case of
xubuntu-users
) will be delivered to everybody who has subscribed to that mailinglist. Thus, if you need help with Xubuntu, you can subscribe to that mailinglist, send an email to that address explaining your problem, and perhaps the next time you check your email, the answer is waiting for you.

You might not have the patience to wait for people to respond, however. If that is the case, fear no more, as IRC comes to the rescue! IRC is a way of being able to communicate in real time with other people - in other words, a chatbox. First you need an application to talk IRC - Xchat, DarkIRC, whatever, it shouldn't really matter. Using your IRC client, you need to connect to a network - FreeNode (on
irc.freenode.net
) in this case. Once you're connected to the network, you need to join the appropriate chatroom (how old-school is that?) - the Xubuntu support room (or channel in IRC lingo) is
#xubuntu
. You can join by typing
/join #xubuntu
.

Once you're in - ask away! Be sure to be polite, not to spam the channel, and realize that, if nobody answers, probably nobody knows. Don't ask the same question over and over again.

It is no secret, however, that the Xubuntu community is not quite the size of the Ubuntu community. Luckily, many people in the Ubuntu community can also help you with your Xubuntu problems if nobody in the Xubuntu community can. The place to get help from the Ubuntu community is the Ubuntu forums. With a very large amount of active members, your question is very likely to find an answer here.

Another place to get help is at Launchpad answers, which is part of Launchpad, a project management website where Ubuntu is managed. Here, you'll be more likely to find developers, who are most likely to be able to help you.

When there is no answer

Even with this vast range of support options, some problems are just errors in the software - so called bugs. These can be reported at bugs.ubuntu.com, where a developer can look at it and, if you're lucky, provide a fix for you and other users to enjoy.

Conclusion

Of course, there will still be times when no answer can be found. However, after having read this article, you'll hopefully be able to better find help yourself. And of course, if you cannot find help, feel free to ask me - I may not be able to provide an answer, but I might be able to give you some pointers.

For people who are new to the term - Launchpad, is a collaboration place for project management and code hosting for free software. It is supported by Canonical Ltd.

Probably the most famous project that uses Launchpad is ubuntu

Launchpad had a nice green top and left side menus. Green has been one of my favorite colors. :)
With the new look, there are no green menus', the left side menus are shifted on the right and there are other features added which are aimed towards a simpler interface.
If you are searching for the left menu to change details, update ssh keys etc., on your profile page, check under 'Personal Package Archive' available as a top menu on the same page.
Also, there are now easily accessible menu items arranged on top at your profile page.

I also noticed a tag cloud type listing on https://code.launchpad.net/, may be I should call it a branch cloud; it looks nice, though I am not sure if this is one of the new features of Launchpad 1.2.4

Another very nice feature is that you can now post on mailing lists without subscribing. This is very useful when you want to make once-off posts.
Spammers - Do not rejoice, such posts are moderated before they can appear on the lists. :)

If someone wonders what I didn't like about this new change, here they are
1. Green menu's were removed
2. New Launchpad logo
3. New launchpad favicon.

Anyway, these don't stop me from using launchpad. :D

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-hardy/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-hardy/ubuntu hardy main

e salvare.

Poi date:

sudo apt-get update

e

sudo apt-get install xbmc

sudo apt-get install xbmc-skin-*

Launchpad yang pada awalnya memang ditujukan khusus untuk dapur kolaborasi Ubuntu dan berbasis Zope 3, saat ini memiliki 4 modul utama dengan fungsi yang berbeda pula, ke-4 modul utama tersebut adalah;

sudo apt-get install bzr bzrtools python-gtk2

bzr get lp:leonov

bzr get lp:leonov/python-launchpad-bugs

cd leonov

ln -s ../python-launchpad-bugs/launchpadbugs

python ./leonov.py -f gtk
