La couverture tout d'abord : un corps d'étudiante partagé en deux et au visage flouté. D'un côté des cours et des vêtements de tous les jours; de l'autre, une tenue aguicheuse, un bas, et des billets ... En guise de titre :

Les bases sont posées ... :s ! Alors je me lance. Première impression, certes motivée par une once de jalousie certainement, mais qui n'avait pas lieue d'être ici : vu comme c'est écrit, presque tout le monde peut se faire publier, si il a quelque chose de pas commun à raconter ...
Je poursuis, et au fil des pages je suis de plus en plus choqué. Choqué par la naïveté de l'auteur, l'attitude de son copain au début (pour ceux et celles qui l'ont lu), la nature des descriptions ... Parce que oui, tout est raconté ! De la chambre d'hôtel avec le papi de 60 ans qui fantasme sur les étudiantes, jusqu'aux harcèlements téléphoniques des "clients" ... Boulversant.
On suit donc l'histoire de cette Laura, tout en progression, jusqu'à une fin approximative qui laisse penser qu'un espoir de s'en sortir existe.

Mon avis personnel :
J'ai beaucoup été touché par ce témoignage, notamment par le fait qu'il soit criant de vérité. Par exemple, au début, elle décrit son inscription à la fac, les frais de scolarité, les mutuelles étudiantes, les premiers cours en amphi ... Tant de choses que j'ai moi même vécu aux mêmes moments qu'elle. Oui parce que chaque chapitre est daté ! et à chaque fois je me disais, pendant la lecture, "p*****, et dire qu'en ce moment même j'étais en train de fêter ci ou ça avec untel ..." ! Les frais de scolarité sont précisément les mêmes que j'ai dû avancer à la fac, etc ... Tant de détails insignifiants qui rendent pourtant le récit complètement ancré dans la réalité !
Mais la comparaison s'arrête là, et l'on voit qu'elle tombe dans une véritable spirale dont on ne se sort pas facilement. Maintenant voila, comme je le disais plus haut, elle est un peu naïve ... Je ne sais pas si c'est pour les besoins du roman ou autre, mais honnêtement je ne pense pas que l'on tombe là dedans avec autant de hasard qu'elle semble le dire ! De plus, je reste persuadé qu'elle aurait pu s'en sortir autrement. Elle parle vaguement du CROUS qui l'a éconduit apparemment. Mais pourquoi n'a-t-elle pas persisté ? Je connais des gens qui n'ont à la base pas le droit à la bourse, mais qui la touche quand même dans des cas particuliers ! Et si quelqu'un me parle de dignité ou autre, désolé mais je préfère insister auprès d'un organisme d'aide étudiante, plutôt que penser, ne serait-ce qu'une seconde, à l'option qu'a choisit l'auteur.
Malgré tout son témoignage n'en demeure pas moins poignant, mais comme le dis Prescillia dans son blog, "Laura se décrédibilise quant à sa nécessité de se prostituer" !
Ce livre se laisse tout de même lire, en très peu de temps soit dit en passant, et nous fait ouvrir les yeux sur un phénomène qui reste encore complètement méconnu : la prostitution étudiante ... On parlerait d'un nombre d'environ 40 000 cas touchés par ce fléau !!

Her parents work as a labourer and a nurse, putting Laura D in the awkward position where she cannot receive government aid because her parents earn too much, yet they do not earn enough to finance their daughter’s studies.

One night while surfing the Internet, depressed and desperately trying to work out how she was going to pay her rent and bills, Laura D came across a personal ad: “Young man aged 50 looking for occasional massage. Students welcome.”

And so she went, thinking it would be a once-off. She met a 50-year-old man called Joe in a hotel, who paid her 250 euros (AU$415). It was the first time Laura D had ever seen a 100 euro note.

In an interview with BBC’s Heather Payton, Laura D explained that her prostitution experiences were not regular, but rather, when she urgently needed the money. It was a “selling point” to tell clients she was a student – they were often men in their fifties and looking for a “Lolita” type. Sometimes they were violent, but absolved themselves of guilt by believing they were helping out poor students. Her memoir was published two weeks ago to raise awareness about this phenomenon.

Eva Clouet, a 23-year-old sociology student, had her book published on the same day, examining how new technology has influenced student prostitution. Whether it be through responding to personal ads online, keeping an erotic blog or performing strip teases via web cam, the ability to hide behind the computer monitor while negotiating sexual contracts has increased notions of anonymity and perceived security. “I felt safe behind the screen,” confessed Laura D, “but it was a lure, because at the meeting [with the client], I was alone and no-one could help me.”

Having interviewed 138 students, Clouet suggested three reasons why students choose prostitution: their precarious financial situation, the desire to cut ties with traditional family values and the disillusion with love. For the students interviewed by Clouet, prostitution was a temporary situation, a way to finance their studies and a type of validation. “They want to succeed, to “become someone”, to live comfortably,” explained Clouet.

At the end of December 2007, French newspaper France Soir ran an article about student prostitution. 18-year-old Jean described her experience of having been out with friends one night, drinking and smoking, when a man asked her to go home with him. “When he told me how much he was offering, I didn’t think too deeply,” she admits, “ […] I could pay my rent and continue to go out.”

Because of the taboo nature of the subject, there are no official figures quantifying how many students in France are prostituting themselves. Although the student union SUD-Etudiants had estimated 40,000 student prostitutes in 2006, one of the spokespeople for the union, Aurélien Picot, admitted that the union could no longer confirm the accuracy of the figures. Police put the number down to 20,000 students, while France Soir newspaper claimed there were nearly 23,000 student prostitutes in France.

Although in Australia it’s possible for students to work part-time, live in a share house and earn enough to pay the bills – as well as save up for an overseas adventure – the same does not apply to their French counterparts.

Shared accommodation has not become common in France until recently, with most people living alone. For students attending university away from their home town, options are limited. A studio with a surface area of fourteen square metres can cost 441 euros (AU$732) per month to rent in a Paris student residence, however residences are already at a saturation point. Finding a studio with a monthly rent of less than 500 euros (AU$830) is difficult, with the surface area most likely to be between ten and fifteen square metres, the size of a large bedroom in Australia.

According to the Student Life Observatory, more than 45,000 students in France are living in situations of extreme poverty, with a monthly budget of less than 650 euros (AU$1079). Even with a part-time job in telemarketing, fast food or babysitting, living costs are too high with little support from the French government.

Last Monday, France’s education minister Valérie Pécresse vowed to increase financial support for students, acknowledging that the government “had not done enough” to counter student poverty.

For Laura D, life continues – but without the prostitution. “I’m still a student and I still have a hard time living,” she admitted. Although financial pressures still exist, she realised that prostituting herself to pay for her studies was not the solution. “It’s really hard to find yourself in front of a fifty-year-old man, naked, and to become an object of fantasy.”
