La mente imaginativa del director de Hollywood, Zack Snyder, hace algunos días estrecho las manos con Electronic Arts acorda con esto ser partícipe importante en la creación de 3 nuevos videojuegos.

Si no lo sabías, te contaré que dicho directo fue quien tuvo la responsabilidad de llevar a la pantalla grande la famosa película donde 300 espartanos encabezados por el rey Leónidas se batían batalla tras batalla por la honra y el respeto de su tierra.

Precisamente el lunes Electronics Arts reveló que Zack Snyder irá a la cabeza de un equipo de desarrollo EA en la ciudad de los Ángeles. Doble poder para el equipo, pues a este pertenece también el no menos famoso padre de los dinosaurios, el director de cine Steven Spielberg.

El director Snyder gana con ello, la facilidad para enriquecer los argumentos de nuevas películas con la base que le otorga la amalgama de nuevos videojuegos.

Bagi yang suka film-film perang kuno yang kolosal, barangkali mau melirik film ini. Apalagi dengan balutan teknologi yang kental yang otomatis lebih menggali potensi kreativitas pembuat film.

Kokbisa? Ya bayangkan saja, 300 tentara romawi Sparta pergi berperang melawan berpuluh-puluh ribu tentara Persia, hanya dengan berbekal tombak, pedang, perisai, jubah merah, dan....

Celana dalam.

Hihihi, kreatifnya kebangetan.

Anyway, 300 ini nggak buruk-buruk amat kok. Malahan, dia telah menyuguhkan tontonan yang nggak biasa dan tergolong baru di dunia perfilman dengan animasinya.

Pokoknya, film ini nggak bakal mengecewakan mata kita.

Misalnya setting kota Roma yang dilengkapi dengan gedung parlemen ala Sparta kuno. Lalu yang paling seru adalah pas klimaks-klimaks yaitu pas perang terjadi.

Adegan-adegannya (waktu perang) dipoles jadi lebih dramatis. Ada saatnya waktu perang one-on-one di-shoot slow motion dan dilihat dari berbagai perspektif. Keren abis.

Lalu pendeskripsian tentara Persia yang aneh-aneh, mulai dari gajah raksasa (padahal saya nggak yakin kalau itu gajah), tentara hitam-hitam bertopeng yang disegani, lalu ada Raja Xerxes yang tingginya minta ampun, plus bersuara seperti monster.

Trus satu hal, saya nggak tahu ini penting apa nggak, di tiap adegan tusuk-tusukan atau sabet-sabetan selalu ada "darah" yang saya rasa animasinya unik banget.

Tapi dari awal ada yang mengganjal yaitu kepercayaan diri yang berlebihan dari pihak Sparta dan 300 tentaranya. Mereka selalu bilang "kita pasti menang, bla bla bla". Walaupun keteguhan mereka cukup mendukung image mereka sebagai tokoh utama, namun saya rasa nggak bakal ada orang yang selalu menghadapi perang dengan tertawa dan wajah dingin. Kayak bukan manusia aja.

Lalu mungkin penggambaran tentara Persia yang saya rasa terlalu imajinatif. Jumlahnya banyak plus pasukannya aneh-aneh.

Aaaah, kalau nggak lihat langsung nggak bakal tahu. Tonton aja deh.

Jadi sinopsisnya sebenarnya gampang. Raja Sparta yang bernama Leonidas disuruh tunduk ke kerajaan Persia, tapi dia nggak mau. Lalu Persia menantang perang.

Tapi pihak Sparta sendiri ada penghianat yang menghalang-halangi pasukan Sparta ke medan perang, tapi nggak berhasil. Raja Leonidas dan 300 tentaranya pergi perang menghadapi 10000 tentara Persia.

Udah intinya itu thok. :) Nggak berat kan?

If part of my original intent was to "find myself" during this trip - I think I succeeded today! Dad and I hopped on a train to the the North Sea to Ostende, but first stopped in to visit Bruges. In Flemish, it is pronouced and spelled, Brugge. I felt so special all day, like I was in my very own town! haha It is a beautiful (albeit touristy) medieval city. It has a canal running through it so they call it a northern "Venice". All the buildings are ancient and initially built and established after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Very cool. My father is a history buff, so I've been learning alot!! We saw a breathtaking statue of "Madonna and child" by Michelangelo in a very old Church of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk). We lit a candle. It was very inspiring and helped me to appreciate all the beauty in the world and to be thankful for all the wonderful people that surround me and my family whom I love very much. *sniff*

We then made our way to the beach of the Noord Zee. It was very windy but sunny. We walked around, then had a great lunch by the sea. I started with lobster bisque, followed by pan fried Cod. Dad had Monkfish. The presentation was gorgeous and whole meal was delish! That was 5 hours ago and I am still stuffed. My fascination with Belgian food is taking on (g)astronomical proportions! (haha I kill me). I am collecting chocolates from a variety of houses (Neuhaus, Leonidas, Marcolinni and another artisan chocolatier to which Tante Jacqueline said she will take me if we have time).

We've also enjoyed a few "croque-monsieur" - basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich - but so much more delicious for some odd reason. The black coffees are fantastic and dad continues to ask for cream with his coffee. The waiters are always confused and we've been offered everything from milk to creme fraiche (35%!!). Oh and last night, I had rabbit and finished off the meal with Tarte Tatine flambed with Calvados (an eau-de-vie or spirit made from apples). OMG, they were abit generous with the Calvados. I had trouble finishing it!

La primera edición española del libro era de tapa dura, y aunque el separador de portada intentaba vender el volumen apelando a la conexión con la película de Snyder, no llegaba a los extremos de la edición de bolsillo que, directamente, está ilustrada con un afiche de la misma. La cosa tiene su miga, pues la estrategia de la editorial (Ariel) no es excesivamente pulcra: los potenciales fans de bulto de la película, que eventualmente podrán, desde luego, disfrutar de la excelente prosa de Cartledge, no tienen por qué estar necesariamente acostumbrados a la lectura de este tipo de género, es decir, el ensayo histórico más riguroso que puede existir. Por ejemplo, Cartledge defiende la posición de Heródoto como antídoto contra el fundamentalismo, teoría indiscutible que difícilmente será aprovechada en toda su extensión por los eventuales lectores de librería de Termópilas. Discúlpenme, tengo mis reservas cotidianas acerca de la genuina divulgación del conocimiento del mundo antiguo que produce best sellers como los de Lane Fox o los del propio Cartledge, igual que las tengo respecto a la ambigua simplificación de los saberes clásicos en el actual sistema educativo español. Pero menos es nada: el acercamiento del público en general a ese mundo, a través de productos de tan excelente factura como la magnífica serie Roma, de HBO, o de pestiños tan insufribles como la película de Oliver Stone sobre Alejandro Magno -con asesoría de Lane Fox, por cierto-, son una prueba patente de que la antigüedad clásica es capaz de atraer y seducir ahora tal vez más que nunca.

Sin embargo, lo que más me ha satisfecho de la lectura de Termópilas ha sido el descubrimiento casi inefable de la razón de un detalle que siempre me había resultado hermético y ajeno: ¿cómo es posible que un rey espartano como Leónidas luchara en cabeza de batalla con ese denuedo lacónico y descarnado, propio del carácter y la bélica formación espartiata? Pues así resulta que los únicos espartanos que estaban exentos de la infrahumana formación militar -y educativa en un sentido pleno, no lo olvidemos, agogé- eran los herederos al trono doble de la polis más poderosa del Peloponeso, miembros de las familias tradicionales de los Europóntidas y Agíadas. La razón de ello es que Leónidas, Agíada, no era heredero natural del trono, sino que lo obtuvo tras la dramática muerte de Cleomenes sin descendencia masculina. Leónidas era su yerno, y como cualquier espartiata había recibido la educación que forjaba el carácter infranqueable de los espartanos. Sólo así se explica el arrojo de un rey. En la página 146, de la edición de bolsillo, Cartledge se molesta para nuestra iluminación en reproducir a pie de página un texto de Thomas Paine, quien en Sentido común, opúsculo contra la tiranía y en pro de la libertad del yugo hereditario publicado en 1776, argumentó contra la estupidez de la realeza:

"Los hombres que se consideran nacidos para reinar, y que se persuaden de que otros viven para obedecerlos, no tardan en volverse insolentes. Al tenerse por escogidos de entre el resto de la humanidad, ven temprano cómo sus mentes se inficionan de altivez. El mundo en el que desarrollan sus actividades se diferencia tanto del mundo en general que apenas tienen oportunidad de conocer cuáles son sus verdaderos intereses, y cuando acceden al gobierno demuestran ser, con frecuencia, los más ignorantes de cuantos habitan sus dominios".

No se pueden decir las cosas con más claridad. Leónidas no estaba infectado de ese virus de la realeza. Su lucha en nombre de las leyes de la ciudad es la lucha de un hombre que no ordena, que no ve una realidad distorsionada, sino que sabe anteponer la libertad de su pueblo al absurdo predominio de la prosapia. La realeza que genera hombres estúpidos como la saga de los Borbones sólo se justifica, en sí, por las acciones accidentales de reyes al mando de una lucha inmortal: en realidad, Leónidas es el único rey que merece la pena.

The Spartans are fighting an aggressive and overwhelming Persian invader headed by the self-appointed "God-King" Xerxes.

It is instantly clear that the sympathy in the movie lies with the Spartans, who are glorified while the Persians are demonised.

The perspective of the movie lies overwhelmingly with the Spartans who, in the movie, declare to be great proponents of social virtues such as freedom, justice, liberty, law and order, reason, and emphatically: hope.

The Persians on the other hand are depicted as mostly faceless, hideous, deformed and barbaric beings headed by a callous and megalomaniacal tyrant.

The identification of the Persians with present day Iran requires not a terribly big stretch of imagination, if only for reasons of geographical coincidence. That the Spartans represent present day USA is not terribly hard to see judging from the laundry list of virtues attributed to the Spartans and which, courtesy of the hypnotic influence of the mass media, are today propagandized to belong to the US as well. The identification of Sparta with the US is further confirmed by the Spartans' battle-cry: HUA, which is US military jargon for heard, understood and acknowledged.

In short, the 'noble' Spartans are, with 'honor and valour', fighting for freedom, justice and all the rest of it, while confronting a 'hideous' and 'subhuman' foreign invader and oppressor.

Now that we've established the parallels between Sparta with the US and Persia with Iran, let's look at the predictive programming elements.

1. Leonidas, representing Sparta, is fighting a glorious battle for freedom, justice and all the rest of it. By the identification of Sparta with the US, the US is hinted at having the moral upper hand in fighting the 'enemy'.
2. Persia is demonized, with the bulk of their soldiers being ugly, hideous hardly human looking creatures, or with faces shrouded. This technique serves to minimize the Persians' (thus, Iranians') human character: the Persians/Iranians are seemingly all monstrous barely human hostile beings who but deserve to be slain as beasts.
   
3. Contrastingly, the Spartans are brave, noble and handsome soldiers, "hard and strong", who know neither surrender nor retreat. This technique seems to serve to embolden the morale of US troops fighting off 'the enemy', that being Iran. The media-doctrine of creating of "noble" martyrs through brainwashing never changes. :D
4. Although the 300 ultimately are defeated and destroyed, they are posthumously glorified as martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting nobly and honorably for their country. Could this be interpreted as a recruitment drive for fresh US troops perhaps?
5. After King Leonidas's demise his Queen then vows to avenge her husband. And so she does. Perhaps a parallel may occur with a newly elected president Hillary Clinton after a US contingent has been destroyed in the middle east by supposedly Iranian forces?

But yes. That's not the reason for this blog post. The reason for this blog post is to whinge about shaving. I hate shaving. It annoys me. I seem to be haemophiliac, if only in the facial area - every time I shave I cut my face to fucking ribbons and look like I've just had a porcupine chucked at my chin. I even managed to cut myself with an electric shaver, which is probably a nadir for my life; it's only a stone's throw from there to managing to bang both your eyes out with a teaspoon (excuse: "I was drunk", if I can still form words while I have a teaspoon in my prefrontal cortex).

Moving out, I needed to get a cheaper razor. I've been using a Gillette Fusion, which when used with some soap as lubrication had the desired effect of removing all the hair from my face without causing lots of blood loss, but is ridiculously expensive to maintain (Listen Gillette you twunts, £6.99 for some blades is NOT CRICKET. EAT A DICK.) Passing over the cheap Boots own brand ones I plumped for a new thing from King of Shaves, called an Azor, which for reasons I'm about to explain should probably more accurately called the Eally Ainful Ace Leeding Renzy Nstigator. I'd heard good things about King Of Shaves, that using their shit would basically give me not only the Lynx Effect times a billion but also the singing voice of Barry White and the sexual prowess of a rabbit that's been dripfed Viagra for two years while having the Kama Sutra massaged delicately into its brain.

Please excuse me, Mr King of Shaves, considering you're based in Chesham and therefore could come and kick the shit out of me in your lunch hour, but the Ucking Ell Y Ace S Leeding Nd T Eally Ucking Urts didn't do any of those things. In fact, what happened is I lost an obscene amount of blood. More so than usual.

Maybe, I thought, I'm doing it wrong. Because I'd always had my propensity to spurt blood out of my face explained away as being because I can't shave, and I might as well listen to someone else's bitching for a change and follow their advice to not be such a spacker. So eschewing soap for a moment, I went and bought some more King Of Shaves stuff (a shave gel and some moisturiser) got home and followed the instructions on the leaflet to the letter - shaving with the direction of hair growth, fully lubricating the face, washing beforehand etc.

What they don't tell you is that shaving in the direction of hair growth doesn't remove any hair. So I went back to doing it the way I usually do, and with the help of the "sensitive" shave gel bled my face right off. I hate you, King of Shaves. I paid a tenner for your razor and some blades and then a further tenner for some of your moisturiser shave gel shit and ended up no better off. Is it some kind of cross-selling marketing strategy, that you create the problem of a raw, bloody face and sell us some gel to try and stop it? Given my general cynicism, that sounds most likely, even though it's stupid; it's like a sports cup manufacturer selling you a boxing glove mounted on a spring aimed at your dick that triggers whenever you play Wii Sports - creating a problem for the sake of selling a solution which then doesn't fully work. (Anyone working or at least vaguely familiar with the IT world is by now probably having horrific flashbacks.)

The only option then is to not shave; but I can't do that. I went through a period when I was at college when I didn't shave, in the belief that it made me look older and therefore cool; in truth it made me look like a hobo, but it was a nice way to guilt trip my girlfriend into buying me a cheap electric razor. Joining the world of work also put paid to that quite quickly, as both Waitrose and I presume HSBC aren't too keen on their employees showing up to work and talking to customers looking like Leonidas, so I have to repeat the whole stupid face-painy-argh-bleedy ritual every couple of days. For, fucks, sake.

And we don't really want to.

Sketching new characters and playing with colours makes us happy girls. We just wished we could do more eheheh. Ah life... you really should have 48 hour days +_+...

Several sources dated the climax of the battle as August 11, 480 B.C. -- 2488 years ago yesterday. (The battle is said to have occurred during the Olympics that year, too.)

World history classes dig through that period of history in the first semester.  Teachers, it's time to think about how we're going to facilitate this history this year.  As always, some bright student will wave a hand in the air and ask, "Mr. Darrell!  How do they know what happened if no one survived, and nobody had their Sony videocorder?"

At least one other student in the course of the day will be surprised to discover the movie wasn't a filmed-on-the-spot documentary.  But apart from that, how do we know the events well enough to pin it down to one day?  And, since the Greeks surely didn't use the Gregorian calendar, since it wasn't invented until the 18th century -- how do we know the date?

The short answer is "Herodotus."  The longer answer may resonate better:  This is one dramatic battle in a year-long fight for the history of the world.  The Greeks were understandably and justifiably proud that they had turned back Xerxes's armies and navy (The Battle of Salamis, a bit after Thermopylae).  So, these events were preserved in poetry, in the chronicles, in song, in sculpture, and in every other medium available to the Greeks.  Your AP English students will probably tell you the movie reminds them of The Iliad.  There's an entré for discussion.

Turning points in history:  Had Xerxes succeeded in avenging his father's, Darius's, defeats, and subjugated the Greeks, history would be much different.  The culture the Romans built on, the trading patterns from east to west and around the Mediterranean, the technologies, the myths, and the stories of the battles, would be different. (Remember, one of Darius's defeats was at the Battle of Marathon, from which we get the modern marathon racing event, the traditional close of the modern Olympics.)

As I have a few new readers, (I'm as amazed as you, trust me) I feel it necessary to make sure you guys know that gardening isn't GARDENING, at least not in the literal dirty way. My loyal followers, I have let you down. I skipped the gardening yesterday. Not on purpose, mind you, but I didn't fight for it, not like you would've expected me to. My apologies. Leo came home and actually wanted to eat first. Keep in mind I didn't propose anything, I guess I just automatically assume that if I look cleaner than usual he'll understand that I am locked and loaded. Uhhh.... so we sit in the living room that doubles as cinema dining room (we watch the tube while he eats.... cdr just sounds better) and watch the final episode of The Next Food Network Star, mostly because I envy Lisa Garza's haircut and wardrobe. Suddenly,  I hear this strange humming sound, and am about to ask Leo if he has left on one of his save the world Inspector Gadget gadgets, when I realize that sound is coming from his FACE. My man is asleep. My feelings weren't hurt, as I knew already that he had slept all of 3 hours the night before. I just HATE like hell that I wasted that shower.....

Op 26 juli vindt de jaarlijkse herdenking door Griekse nationalisten van de Slag bij Thermopylae plaats.

De slag bij Thermopylae is een veldslag in 480 v.Chr. tussen een alliantie van Griekse stadstaten en de Perzen onder leiding van Xerxes I.

Griekse claims

Na de nederlaag van Darius I in de slag bij Marathon, had zijn zoon en opvolger Xerxes een aantal jaren gebruikt om zijn leger weer op sterkte te brengen, zodat hij de oorlog met de Grieken kon doorzetten. In 480 v.Chr. trok Xerxes met zijn leger via een uit schepen gemaakte brug de Hellespont over.

De Griekse stadstaten verzamelden zich onder leiding van Sparta, wiens soldaten beschouwd werden als de best getrainde soldaten ter wereld. Om politieke en religieuze redenen kon het Griekse leger niet op volledige sterkte aantreden. Omdat hij de uitkomst van de veldslag al voorzag, koos koning Leonidas van Sparta zelf 300 hoplieten, waarbij de enige voorwaarde was dat deze mannen zonen hadden die oud genoeg waren om de familieverantwoordelijkheden van hun vaders over te nemen. In totaal bestond het Griekse leger uit ongeveer 4000 man, bij de 300 waren ook nog eens soldaten vanuit de buurt geronseld. Volgens Herodotus had Xerxes meer dan 3 miljoen man, en dronken ze hele rivieren. Wellicht is dit een overdrijving, maar ongetwijfeld waren de Grieken ver in de minderheid.

Leonidas koos een nauwe pas in de bergen, bij Thermopylae, als de plaats waar de Grieken de Perzen op zouden wachten. In die tijd was de pas zo nauw dat slechts twee strijdwagens met moeite naast elkaar konden rijden. Aan de ene kant was een steile berghelling, aan de andere kant een steile klif.

De slag

Xerxes, die niet kon geloven dat slechts zo weinig soldaten tegenover zijn leger stonden, gaf de Grieken 4 dagen de tijd om terug te trekken. Toen zijn leger rusteloos begon te worden, gaf hij het bevel aan te vallen. De Grieken hadden zich georganiseerd in een falanx, een opstelling van hoplieten met een dichte rij schilden en gevelde lansen van verscheidene rijen diep; deze was voor de minder bewapende Perzische infanteristen vrijwel ondoordringbaar; een falanx is geen goed wendbare opstelling, maar dankzij de situering in een bergpas konden de Grieken niet omsingeld worden. De Perzische numerieke overmacht werd daardoor tenietgedaan. Zelfs de goed getrainde Perzische Onsterfelijken konden niet door de linies van de Grieken breken.

De goed getrainde en zwaar bewapende Grieken richtten een bloedbad aan onder de Perzen, die er maar niet in slaagden de rangen van de Grieken te doorbreken. Deze eerste fase duurde twee dagen. Op dat moment liep de Griek Ephialtes over naar de Perzen. Hij vertelde hen over een andere bergpas, die slechts bewaakt werd door 1000 man uit Fokis. De Perzen stuurden een deel van hun troepenmacht door de andere pas, en behaalden een eenvoudige overwinning.

Toen Leonidas dit zag gebeuren, realiseerde hij zich dat de slag verloren was. Hij stuurde iedereen naar huis, met uitzondering van de 3 Treganen. Een groep van 600 man uit Thespiae onder leiding van Demophilus weigerde echter te vertrekken. De daaropvolgende slag was zeer heftig. De Grieken vochten fel, en slaagden erin twee broers van Xerxes te doden. Uiteindelijk werd Leonidas gedood, samen met al zijn mannen.

De slag werd verheerlijkt door de schrijver Simonides.

Het vervolg

Toen het lijk van Leonidas door de Perzen gevonden werd, liet Xerxes, woedend over de zware verliezen die hij geleden had, dit lijk onthoofden en kruisigen. Dit was heel ongebruikelijk bij de Perzen; meestal behandelden ze vijanden die dapper hadden gevochten, respectvol, zoals Pytheas, toen die bij Skyros gevangen genomen werd. Xerxes stond bekend om zijn woede-aanvallen, zoals bij het oversteken van de Hellespont, waar hij het water geselde omdat dit hem niet wilde gehoorzamen.

De militaire betekenis van Thermopylae was beperkt; in de westerse geschiedschrijving heeft Thermopylae wel de status gekregen van schoolvoorbeeld van een heldhaftige nederlaag. Het was geen keerpunt in de oorlog, het kon niet voorkomen dat Athene vervolgens geplunderd werd door de Perzen, maar het gaf de bevolking wel de tijd om te vluchten naar het naburige eiland Salamis, waar korte tijd later de beslissende zeeslag bij Salamis zou plaatsvinden.

Na de oorlog, toen de Perzen verslagen en verdreven waren, verzamelden de Grieken hun doden en begroeven die op de heuvel. Er werd een stenen leeuw opgericht ter herdenking van Leonidas. Veertig jaar na de slag werd Leonidas' lichaam van Thermopylae naar Sparta overgebracht, waar het met militaire eer herbegraven werd. Elk jaar werden tot zijn eer begrafenisspelen georganiseerd.

Letzten Mittwoch, frühmorgens, wurde ich plötzlich vom Geräusch das mein Handy macht wenn es auf meinem Nachtisch rumvibriert, geweckt. Es sieht lustig aus wenn es sich dort bewegt, wie ein Käfer auf dem Rücken der sich nicht umdrehen kann. Ich trinke einen Schluck Wasser und Greife zu den Fishermans bevor ich den Anruf annehme, erst als ich abgenommen habe ich mir überlegt das dieses Fisherman eigentlich verschwendet war, denn die Person am anderen Ende riecht meinen Atem gar nicht. Egal sie sind immer gut.

Ich komme mir manchmal vor wie Leonidas, der spartanische König der wegen den Ephoren, die anders als im Film 300 nicht irgendwelche Priester waren, sondern eine Behörde des Antiken Spartas, die in einigen Fragen über dem König standen. Ihre Bürokratie hat verhindert das Leonidas sein Land vor der Persern verteidigen konnte und unsere Bürokratie verhindert das ich mich auf etwas anderes als eben sie, konzentrieren kann.

Sonst hätt ich um diese Zeit wohl nicht sein Handy in der Hand oder? Es gab einmal einen anderen spartanischem Feldherrn der ebenfalls Probleme mit den Ephoren hatte, sein Name war Lysander.

Nein, ich war doch am schlafen bis eben und würde das gerne fortsetzen. Doch anders als Leonidas wollte er nicht einfach bloss sein Land verteidigen sondern nach Attika Marschieren, ein Angriffsfeldzug also.

Adresse geht ja aber wozu brauchst du bitte Regelmässige Buchungen und den Kontostand. Lysander gelang es also drei der fünf, vom Volk gewählten Ephoren zu überreden und zog nach Attika.

Ich labbere alles runter, was ich weis, beim Kontostand bin ich jedoch unsicher.

Endlich weiterschlafen. Lysander gewann den damaligen Krieg und da dKönig Pausanias gegen Lysanders Feldzug gewesen war, wurde er später zum Tode verurteilt, weil er seinen Feldherren nicht unterstützt habe.

Ich bin nun mal eher ein Leonidas als ein Lysander, ich versuche weniger mit ihnen zu verhandeln sondern füge mich scheinbar, jedoch nicht wirklich. Doch während Leonidas mit seinen 300 einen imposanten Heldentot sterben durfte, starb Lysander irgendwo bei einem kleinen Gefecht, soviel ich in Erinnerung habe zur See. Trotzdem war er einer der grössten Feldherren Spartas, doch während Leonidas durch seinen Heldentot den meisten ein Begriff sein dürfte, ist Lysander uns nicht mehr besonders wichtig. Wer hat es jetzt besser? Vermutlich Lysander, er hat länger gelebt.

Ich bin mir natürlich bewusst das der Vergleich von mir zu Leonidas sehr stark hinkt, denn der wäre zu diesem Kundeberater hingegangen und..

Les plans de Frank Miller, extraordinairement mis en couleur par Lynn Varley, sont somptueux de cadrage, de découpage, de mise en dynamique. Le jeu des répétitions force l’énergie brutale de ces planches et campe de façon saisissante la violence de ce combat. Son travail du noir rehausse les mouvements, les détails.

Ici c’est tout le trouble de la force et de la violence qui éclate en une réflexion insidieuse sur le fascisme et le fanatisme.

Μια ρήση, ένας τίτλος ποιήματος για να ακριβολογούμε, γεμάτη αυταπάρνηση και μεγαλείο. Ο Αλεξανδρινός αποδίδει τιμές στον Λεωνίδα και τους 300 πού έπεσαν ηρωικά μέχρι ενός το 480 π.Χ. στα στενά των Θερμοπύλων σε μια μάταιη προσπάθεια να αναχαιτίσουν τις στρατιές του Ξέρξη.

Φέρνοντας στην μνήμη μας τον ηρωικό θάνατο των Λακεδαιμονίων ψηλώνουμε ηθικά αναλογιζόμενοι τη μεγαλειώδη αντίσταση τους, όπως και αυτή αναπαρήχθη στην πρόσφατη ταινία 300. Αλλά καμιά φορά αναρωτιέμαι αν η ίδια ακριβώς θυσία και μάχη θα τύγχανε των ίδιων δαφνών και επαίνων αν τελικά οι περσικές στρατιές δεν αναχαιτίζονταν στη Σαλαμίνα και τις Πλαταιές λίγο αργότερα.

Αυτό που θέλω να πω είναι πως η Ιστορία βρίθει από παραδείγματα στρατών και ανθρώπων που ώρισαν να φυλάγουν Θερμοπύλες. Εντελώς συνειρμικά ταξιδεύω στο Γενικό Ταχυδρομείο του Δουβλίνου όπου το 1916 Ιρλανδοί πατριώτες έπεσαν μαχόμενοι για την ανεξαρτησία τους. Δε λησμονώ ακόμα και τη μάχη της Λοκρίδας το 146 π.Χ. όταν οι ρωμαϊκές λεγεώνες υπερκέρασαν την αντίσταση των τελευταίων ελευθέρων Ελλήνων ρίχνοντας έτσι την αυλαία στο αρχαιοελληνικό έπος.

Μπορώ να σκεφτώ πλείστα άλλα παραδείγματα και φτάνω μοιραία μπροστά στο ερώτημα, μήπως τελικά ο Καβάφης υπερβάλλει όπως και ο Ηρόδοτος υπερέβαλε αναφορικά με τους αριθμούς των επιδρομέων του Ξέρξη*;

Όχι, αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι η απαράμιλλη στάση. Έχω γίνει μάρτυρας πολλών ανθρώπων που έχουν μια ερασιτεχνική σχέση με την μουσική, όλοι αυτοί δεν έχουν βάσιμες ελπίδες να κλέψουν κάπως τις θαυμάστριες του Ρουβά, αλλά λόγω των αναρίθμητων εργατοωρών που κατανάλωσαν για χάρη της Τέχνης, «ψήλωσαν» μοναδικά. Έγιναν πολύ καλύτεροι, γιατί στάθηκαν αγέρωχοι μπροστά στους «Αθανάτους»** και τους αντιμετώπισαν με γενναιότητα και ας ξέρουν πως τη θυσία δεν θα την υμνήσει κανένας Σιμωνίδης***.

Το να στεκόμαστε στις Θερμοπύλες μπορεί να προεξοφλεί τον θάνατο μας, αλλά ταυτόχρονα προεξοφλεί και την υψηλή μας αξία και αυτή με την σειρά της προεξοφλεί ανώτερη ποιότητα ζωής. Να αντιστεκόμαστε για τα ιδανικά και τις αξίες μας και αυτό θα μας κάνει όλους μοιραία Leonidas!

Αυτό ίσως να θέλει να μας πει ο Καβάφης!!

* Για τους Αδαείς: Σύμφωνα με τον «Πατέρα της Ιστορίας», το περσικό στράτευμα αριθμούσε πάνω από 2,000,000 άντρες. Η κινητοποίηση και η συντήρηση ενός τόσου μεγάλου σώματος κρίνεται αδύνατη για εκείνη την εποχή.

** Για τους Αδαείς: Επίλεκτο σώμα του περσικού στρατού, αποτελούσαν και την σωματοφυλακή του Μεγάλου Βασιλέα. Ήταν 10,000 και λέγονταν «Αθάνατοι» γιατί κάθε φορά που κάποια από τα μέλη του σκοτώνονταν στη μάχη αντικαθίστανταν άμεσα για να διατηρούνται πάντα 10,000!
