I know I've been posting a lot of video stuff lately.  It's only because there have been a bunch of good videos lately.  This is the official music video for Santogold's "Lights Out" single off of the album Santogold released earlier this year.  The song is really fun, a bit different, and I think it's a great idea to make a video for it.  With a bouncy bassline, "fun!" lyrics, and catchy-hook combination, this is just the sound for the summer.  Maybe that's the reason it's used on the Bud Light Lime commercials.  Also something to be noted is that the video is done in the same style as Santogold's other single "L.E.S. Artistes."  I like everything about this album, and the wealth of Santogold material out there is making my days very good ones.  Let's just say I won't be turning the lights out on this one anytime soon. (PUN!)

Chairlift - Evident Utensil (MGMT remix): Encore un groupe ami de MGMT, Chairlift un groupe plus qu'a agréable à écouter au reveil ou en fin de soirée.. Le nouvel album est trés bon, je met le remix car l'instru déja belle dans l'origine est encore plus agréable faite par MGMT

The Whip - Trash: I wanna... I wannaa... I wanaaa... I wana to be Trash!

I've been living in New York for just over 2 years, and in that time I've had a number of 'favorite places'.  First it was Washington Heights (for that is where I could afford to reside), but after moving around with The Ambassador for a minute I've become quite fond of a number of places with SoHo being a standout.

Right now Williamsburg is holding me down (again, this is where I currently reside), but after three trips in quick succession I'm seriously becoming a fan of the Lower East Side.  L.E.S. is to Manhattan as Williamsburg is to Brooklyn (where them SAT books at?*) so its no surprise that I've got soft spot for it.

So whats the deal? L.E.S. is ... LES is.  It's grimey and its just doing its own damn thing and so is every who hangs out and/or resides there.  The nightlife is 'different', for want of a better word and to be honest it isn't for the faint of heart.  If you're looking for red ropes, oversized bouncers and pretentious door men, check club row or... Libation but in the L.E.S. it is the exception as opposed to the rule.

If you're up for adventure however, as Mark Hardy and I were this past week, you will be thoroughly entertained.  After hanging out with Tash at Raphael Saadiq's (Lucy Pearl? Tony! Toni! Toné!? No?..*sigh*) listening party in Chelsea, we left, and took a pass by Kings Cross which was uncommonly empty and so decided to take a walk down to the Lower East Side.  Intercepted on the way there by my buddy and the coolest investment banker the world ever saw, the three of us made our way down Rivington.

In the space of two hours we:

• went to Libation and realized it's not the same as it used to be
• got rejected by the doorman at 105 Rivington for lack of ladies
• had the best burger and fries I've had in a minute
• got into 105 Rivington after some pseudo smooth talking
• chilled out on a bench in front of a crepe shop
• gave directions
• went to a bar that had a salsa party (3 people), reggae party (4 people) and a karaoke party  (11 people) going on all at the same time
• got directions
• sat on the wall at darkroom and met....wait for it... a Swedish Asyrian rock star, a Scotish writer living in Sweden, a Guyanese girl (I forget what she does), a half Haitian chick named Sapphire (I can only guess what she does), Florence, a clothing shop owner visiting from Paris, a Jamaican writer (link up!), an Apple engineer and his scary looking girlfriend from Miami, Ben a film student who had been in New York for all of 3 days, Victoria the Samba dancer from Brazil and a crack head from New Jersey.

Now, if that doesn't constitute a damn good, interesting night...I don't know what does.  L.E.S. we'll be back... fo sho!

* Please note that Gian Franco never did SATs and boy is he glad that he didn't. He was however subjected to the GMATs. Generally he feels that all standardized tests should be shot dead on sight.

'L.E.S Artistes'

I think Santogold has made one of the most interesting albums so far this year. It’s refreshing to listen to an artist who is self-confident enough to move beyond genre descriptions and try to create something new and personal. The last few years have been bombarded with bands who just copy paste their favourite decade. Am I the only one who has grown a bit wary of all those post-punk revival bands?

Santogold is here to rescue us all from boredom and from drowning in the overflow of Arctic Monkish bands. She makes for a nice coctail of 80's new wave, dub, punk, reggae, hip hop, hold on, let me catch my breath....indie rock, electronic, ska..phew, maybe that should cover it. Not that we need any classifications here, right?

Brooklyn based DJ/producer XXXChange, from the rap/hip hop group Spank Rock, has made a great remix of the brilliant “L.E.S. Artistes” from Santogold’s self titled album. It creates a whole new atmosphere in the song and makes a lot of room for her gutsy vocals.

On today's Music Monday I'd like to introduce you to a song by Santogold. Santogold is the new star in the music press it seems, and she definitely has an idiosyncratic sound. I mean that as compliment to the artist.

I suppose it's only a matter of time until you'll hear L.E.S. Artistes again and again on the radio (which is why I don't listen to the radio most of the time), but if it's not shoved down your throat ears, it's actually excellent. She sounds a bit like Joan Jett on this song, and when I first heard it I couldn't help but think: Tegan and Sara could probably do an excellent cover version of this. Somehow this song sounds like something Sara Quin might've written for The Con.

Santogold stopped the studios of XFM London last week to record three songs for the station's Music:Response program, which is hosted by DJ Steve Harris.

Santogold performed "L.E.S. Artistes," "Creator," and "Unstoppable" for the program. XFM London recorded the songs on video as well, so listeners have the option of watching or listening to the tracks on the XFM Web site.

Santogold (pictured above), a Philadelphia-born, New Wave/Dub artist (born Santi White), released her self-titled debut album, recorded with producer John Hill, on April 29th in America. (Santogold was released on May 12th in the UK.) The album's lead single, "L.E.S. Artistes," is easily one of the best singles released thus far in 2008. It is a brilliant, catchy tune, and was a great way to introduce Santogold to the music-buying public. The song is available for download on iTunes.

Santogold has been getting quite a bit of airplay on music radio in the UK. She is currently on tour in Europe and will return to the States in early June, playing a show in Mountainview, CA on June 7th.

Enfin, j'ai pris mes deux jambes, mes fesses et ma tête (car sinon ça craint) pour aller voir Fanny ! Oui et cela faisait très longtemps que je disais que j'allais venir. ENFIN, une chose faite !

J'ai pu faire ma petite touriste dans les rues nancéens, j'ai vu enfin la fameuse place Stanistlas, j'ai pris le tram (ouuuouou) et j'ai fait une razia au H&M!!! :-)

D'abord, on a fait un saut à la foire de Nancy. On a fait un manège qui décoiffe, (et qui donne un peu la gerbe au début mais ça va l'adrénaline monte vite à la tête) et on lève les bras dans les airs!!!! Puis, on a invité Fanny sur une borne "are you sexy", il fallait que fred la tienne d'un bras et Paolo l'autre. (je mettrais la vidéo) mais ça va elle a réchauffé ses mains avant donc elle est "superman"!! trop drôle...

On est allés aux "Artistes", boire un verre : j'ai pris un truc trop bon c'est de la bière avec du sirop de cerise et une boule de glace!!! trop le goût des PEZ's!! miam miam! Samedi on est allés manger "Au bureau" et je me suis remplie les poches de bocks (sous-verres). Je vais au bar et je demande gentillement :

Je peux en prendre? J'en fais la collection.
Le serveur : c'est en libre service!
Merci, c'est cool et je me sers... (après coup je le suis demandée si c'était pas ironique.....)

Tant pis, maintenant j'ai de beau sous-verres!

Après on fait encore un tour à la foire, et je découvre ma vocation : le tir à la carabine truqué. Paulo m'a si gentillement laissé tiré au stand. Hé... ça va je porte pas la poisse!! La chance de la débutante quoi!

Après direction "l'envers" >> es rockt!! héhé au lieu de prendre les marches on prend le toboggan (j'adoooore!!), on s'est bien amusé, la musique était bien, c'était pas trop chère, les boulets y 'en à mais ça va y a des locations pires. "Nan, mais j'ai pas envie de danser un slow sur Rage against the machine", "bon, le rock&roll ça ira merci" en plein milieu de la chanson dépité le mec répond "je peux danser plus doucement" effectivement j'avais trop du mal avec mon sac qui le tapait et qu'il arrêtait pas de me faire tourner en rond ça donne le tournis et le sol il glisse un peu (suis pas de mauvaise foi). Bon sur ma "to do liste" je vais noter prendre des cours de rock&roll, ça me servira bien un jour!! Et la pauvre Audrey! Elle a eu sa dose de "boulletos" notamment le petit jeune vomito de 19 ans de Touls (hé, c'est ou ça?) Bravo la jeunesse!!!

Entout cas c'était fun! Fanny, on se refixera un RDV pour un autre week-end à Nancy? :-) hein??

En enfin le dimanche était dédié à la visite du château de Haroué. Mais bon on est pas rentrés car ils ne prennent pas la carte de crédit.... dommage. On le saura pour la prochaine fois!!!

She's been pretty hyped over the last few weeks, both from Radio 1 and other music sites such as Hype Machine. I can't say I have it yet, but I definitely intend to, after picking up a few of the smattering of tracks and awesome remixes spread all over the net.

But the way we go around implementing those influences are very different, and I am in no way influenced by what the press are saying."^[9] Additionally, some of Santogold's material has been compared to that of the Pixies,^[15] which Santogold agrees with.^[9] Santogold has also said that she is inspired by 1980s pop music. Santi White mais conhecida como Santogold, era estudante de uma escola de percussão, trabalhou numa gravadora e produziu o disco da amiga Res, ali ela já evidenciava o que poderia fazer. Teve uma passagem como vocalista no grupo punk Stiffed e foi lá que chamou a atenção de Mark Ronson, fazendo uma participação especial no seu disco de covers “Version”, onde cantou “Pretty Green” do cultuado grupo The Jam. Agora, em 2008, a artista lançou seu primeiro álbum, homônimo, um dos mais atraentes do ano.

Comparações
Ela foi denominada a nova M.I.A., inevitavelmente. Talvez pela grande variação de ritmos das duas cantoras, além de um visual semelhante. Outra grande parecença é com Karen O dos Yeah Yeah Yeahs, pelo seu vocal ocasionalmente punk. Isso se torna bastante notável na primeira faixa do disco, L.E.S Artistes e na décima, I’m a Lady. Sem contar sua voz situada em alguns momentos nos anos 80 como em Unstoppable, My Superman etc.

A grande originalidade e variação são um dos aspectos principais no trabalho de Santogold. White promove uma grande miscelânea de estilos, a junção do pop, ska, dub, punk e os anos 80. Essa mescla extremamente atraente, denota a grandiosidade da artista e do disco produzido.

Santogold é uma das novas cantoras para serem vistas da revista Rolling Stone, conta com uma agenda de shows lotada, tocou no festival Coachella onde foi aclamada, está numa turnê européia, e têm todos os aspectos necessários para crescer exponencialmente no mundo da música e ainda não é descartável. Promissora.
