På Tellus släpptes det loss fångar med hjälp av levande musik, en gammal (smått fantastisk) kvinna, vegetarisk mat och berusningsdrycker. Det var jädrans trevligt. Jag drack, lyssnade och besökte herr-rummet. I nämnd ordning ska tilläggas. Med tanke på att jag är så rebellisk av mig tog jag in på personaltoaletten. Se så de klottrar. Tur att någon i allmänhetens tjänst minsann belyser detta.

Ce matin sur Radio Sauvagine. Entre une sortie de rocade sinistre sous la grisaille et l'arrivée au bureau dans une ZAC quelconque en périphérie d'une grande ville, le temps a suspendu son vol durant 3mns. Celle du remix de CSS de The City, The Airport par Loney, Dear.

Ce n'est pas tous les jours que l'on tombe sur une mélodie d'une telle beauté stupéfiante.  Une évidence biblique dans la progression harmonique jusqu'à ce qu'elle reboucle en une arabesque inattendue. Juste lorsque l'on se remet à peine, médusé, du couplet on chute dans la béance tout aussi irréelle du refrain.

Si le remix de CSS est comme un écrin discret et improbable pour mieux mettre la mélodie en valeur, l'interprétation live dans la vidéo ci-dessus la met à rude épreuve en la soumettant à diverses torsions (les cuivres haletants), à la pulsion rapide de forces contraires.

On pense à la fois à l'exaltation candide du 1er LP des Guillemots et la dynamique d'orfèvre de Belle And Sebastian.

La grâce de la pop musique : transformer le plomb d'un commuting en un moment magique.

I am surprised really since I usually love male singer songwriters with a falsetto voice- Loney, Dear and The Antlers being artists I have come across over the last year that I absolutely love (Findo Gask as well but definitely not singer songwriter types).

Vernon's voice just seems too forced on the majority of the songs and it is only the on the more subtle tracks that I can really enjoy his vocals. So after a few listens to the album Blindsided and Re Stacks were the highlights for me and while some of the other tracks are good it is not an album I will be putting on too often. Saying that, I have heard only good things about his live performance so I will try to catch him when he is back in town.

Att stanna och dansa till dålig musik känns bara som att kasta bort upplevelsen. För några år sedan såg jag Loney Dear spela i Uppsala. Det var första gången det hände. Jag gick hem. Det är absolut inget dåligt betyg för bandet, tvärt om. Det var verkligen bra. Ikväll så jag dem igen på Trädgårn i Stockholm. Ett halvkasst ljud drog ner upplevelsen lite, men det var fortfarande helt underbart.

En intensiv ljudbild som bara suger in en och fantastiska melodier som går rätt in i hjärtat. På samma gång är det lekfullt och framfört med en glimt i ögat som man bara inte kan värja sig mot. Jag växlade mellan den allvarliga "fan va bra det är"-minen och "jag kan inte sluta le för det är så fantastiskt"-minen, och i mina ögon är Loney Dear något av det absout bästa Svensk musik har att erbjuda idag. Skickligt, nyskapande, vackert och det går rakt in i själen.

Lyssna på Myspace, och ge det gärna några genomlyssningar. Det blir bara bättre.

But it's oftentimes the regrets and mistakes that we end up dwelling on. And I will share with you two of mine: Loney, Dear and Delta Spirit.

I missed out on these two bands for my fairly lengthy "Top 28 Albums of 2007" list.

I'll start off with Loney, Dear, which is the performing/artist name for Swedish singer-songwriter, Emil Svanangen. His music is a swirling mixture of light electronic lo-fi rock, each song built on layer upon layer of itself with things like tambourines, bells, xylophone, horns, accordion, harmonica, hand-claps(!), and other happy-endorphin arousing sounds. And his airy, endearingly (and not annoyingly) earnest voice floats in and out of the music throughout, accompanied by his team of back-up singers and musicians. Independent label Sub Pop have signed him and is distributing his back catalog as well. The current album is Loney, Noir and he is working on a new one as I write this. You can get Loney, Noir straight from Sub Pop.

I found out about Delta Spirit in a most unexpected way. Cruising through blogs one day, I came upon one of life's biggest pieces of crap: auto-start music/video/anything on blogs. I clicked onto this obnoxious person's blog and the music started up within seconds (luckily I didn't have my volume turned up nor was I listening to any music of my own). So I reacted how I normally do, immediately moving my cursor to 'x' out of the blog...but I kind of liked the song. So I let it play out. Then I googled the lyrics which landed me on the band's Myspace. I listened to a couple more of their tracks, then I took out my credit card to place an order for their album, Ode to Sunshine, which was released last year.

Soon after, I found out they were the touring mates of the Cold War Kids, who I enjoy quite a bit. It wasn't too surprising as their sounds are somewhat similar: bluesy and stripped down yet still loud, with a raw, bare rock sound. But Delta Spirit have more of a country-folk twang (I think it's the "twang" that sets them apart) to many of their songs, which adds a certain rustic, somewhat timeless quality to their music. They can certainly get you up and dancing too. The sample tracks I've chosen are the more upbeat songs, 'cos I like them the most. You're going to have to get the album to get the quieter, more folksy songs. Buy Ode to Sunshine from the band and receive a free poster!

Actually, the only other person I know who dared to mention Loney, Noir was Rachel Briggs, art director at American Songwriter magazine, whom I must salute for her fine taste. What's more surprising is that it seems no one even took notice of the bushy-tailed blaze of infatuating sunshine that is "I Am John," which I consider to be the best song of the year in a year of some truly great contenders. Off to a brisk start with Emil Svanängen's falsetto whine, accentuated with a crisp, finger-swept acoustic guitar before being lifted by Malin Ståhlberg's feminine back-up and drumbrush swipes, the song only builds off its punchy beginning with lyrics that work their way into every corner – often carrying over from bar to bar as if struggling to keep up – and pushes far beyond its dainty exterior into an ever-escalating, clamorous finish of pinched vocals revolving around one another, until, finally, just fading into silence as if nothing ever happened. Perhaps that's why Loney, Noir's gentle hooks, soft synths and placid passion – if I was forced to pick, other highlights worth looking into are "Hard Days 1,2,3,4" and "Carrying A Stone," but two in a string of worthy titles – failed to catch the attention of critics who sort through hundreds of free promo CDs a year: Loney, Dear is just too sweet for rock 'n' roll, and all the better for it.

Swedes Please is a blog dedicated to presenting Swedish groups and has some great content- I think what very little free time I have over the next few weeks is going to be spent here!  There is a link from this post to Lines Through Lines where you can find three of Surrounded tracks to download.

I came across quite a few things Swedish last year:  Loney, Dear and Little Dragon are relatively new groups and I listened to The Knife quite a bit again.  I also met Helena and Annika- two lovely Swedish girls at Electric Picnic!  I had actually looked into going to Gothenburg in Feb-March and try to catch a few gigs but the new job has changed those plans until later in the year at some stage.

]]> <![CDATA[The Jimmy Cake and Loney, Dear]]> http://tenacioustimothy.wordpress.com/2007/12/22/the-jimmy-cake/ Sat, 22 Dec 2007 14:19:05 +0000 tenacioustimothy http://tenacioustimothy.fr.wordpress.com/2007/12/22/the-jimmy-cake/ I was stuck in traffic yesterday while on the way back from collecting the drums (yes drums!) for the boys Christmas present and listened Edel’s show on Phantom.  Hardly ever get to listen to it since I would normally be in work but she has some great music and interviews with bands.  Had heard of The Jimmy Cake in passing but not their music- quite good and it reminds me of Loney, Dear without the lyrics.  The type of music that starts off quite simply and then builds layer upon layer until you have something quite exquisite.  The interview itself was a little strange since they seemed to be a bit quiet which for radio is not a good thing.  Quite funny how Edel mentioned their frequent lineup changes...the ‘size of their members’…ahh live radio!  Will hopefully see them tomorrow in Whelans but as always that is contingent on the ex looking after the boys.

Mon Train à Grande Vitesse démarre vendredi à 13hrs. Espérons juste que celui qui me ramène mardi circulera au moins à vitesse moyenne. Eh oui, un nouveau préavis de grève est annoncé à la SNCF, ce jour là. Toute une aventure...

I know that Sub Pop releases other genres of music than super-mellow indie pop. I just haven't heard much of it lately. So forgive me if I'm starting to stereotype them that way. Their latest offering comes in the form of the Swedish Loney, Dear, whose melancholic falsetto, at it's highest, could make even Ben Gibbard fans vomit a little in their mouth. Luckily, Loney, Dear stays within a safe range for much of his upcoming album, the aptly titled Loney, Noir. With it's dreamy, sugary sweet pop beats, and Loney, Dear's aforementioned falsetto, Noir, is very likable. Just make sure you don't fall asleep while you listen to it.
