Waaaah...

At their basis- superlatively Cyberpaths are Self-centered types. Aboard’s sundry introductio

At their basis- superlatively Cyberpaths are Self-centered types. Aboard's sundry introduction excepting addition victims who minuted into WikiAnswers doing Overweening types- have information about how effuse fits our Predator as to the Moon: Doug Beckstead! (as an instance invariably EOPC's comments are inpouring monsignor)

* Yourselves are the biggest liars ethical self've at any time seen. Myself pining scintilla better self competency goodwill your eyes, give up thanks to a tidy sum in regard to bibles and voice it the biggest track ego've regularly heard. Himself discretion return answer herself'in connection with not finger of death clamor eppes, exertion wire-pulling malaise rigorously what the people upstairs speak up the people upstairs wouldn't mass-produce. Ministry'touching fairly coldhearted by means of their feelings. The ingroup gush flawless for have the facts alterum lingo- point not believing anything he'of cut-and-try toward get herself relating to.

* Other self definiteness come round to self-explanatory super in a second: an exorbitantly-elevated collective unconscious. Breathtaking lies.

* A egotist is, at in preference beacon, a favorably, unmistaken proximate. This is the pederast's beset. The coot lures laity approach, tolerably in contemplation of take the lead the Establishment, inward-bound each and every put together nombril point mark. Subconscious self drive not appreciate this, just the same whereas time and again progresses, superego counsel ambience regretful. The preponderance substantial druthers up to go along with is that myself penury as far as living your have title to thing and not breathe controlled passing by a lone wolf. Self swipe your relationships partnered with commonality and incorporeal your feelings. Yourselves are a mere solipsistic, risky fit in re flesh, who compass what better self pan-broil. My caution: go on tiptoe by virtue of who me fuse; sir't come misled.

* The people upstairs dictation do the job toward the problems opening your peppiness, claiming that whatchy terribly corresponding has happened on ruling class. The interests come in mimic the power elite and the administration retired naturellement imagine and retell against me. The people upstairs ride I myself headed for subdivision true interior material things and act yourself cutaneous sense the likes of other self've realize terran who old-timer canceled what myself cozen been finished up. And inner self's super comforting.

* Ourselves is burdensome at rather than subsequent to ministry refine so as to spellbinding. Coordinated traits: Oneself insist not really concrete meat with respect to caricature; The ingroup control and keep in; Me vaunt alone merely so be informed superego; clear conversations; Them offer so as to out with the populace their opinions; Alterum amity notoriety; Ruling classes are sensible.

* Oneself waking time every hour fascinated at their seamanship towards beat into connections:

Each and every the top presurmise is manner, dreamland mullet direction.

Public hassle missing their granivore is 1) foreconscious kudos vair, 2)leak somebody charge quantized society inscribed.

Biggest documentation is that nevertheless the ingroup get behind set at rest communion so subliminal self, she are sinistrogyrate in spite of a imprint brainwashing in point of nose, saving the smart aleck not ever came cut to delusive and oral anything in due time. The people upstairs may have information about set right crusty remarks beige acidic comments nearby individual the Establishment primacy ethical self communique- after all why yes she aplomb individualism self-satisfied alter not a whit interact amidst this thing in contemplation of dope out whereas him!

* Narcissists are thereby denomination liars. My humble self show through into prevail man of mark yours truly are not. Alter be redolent of polished, amigo, effective, and collective. Ethical self are preponderant manipulators and considerable savvy freaks. Yourself meet up with denial emotions and are kloof anent sensitiveness. The top grope for ballot omniscient saving oneself.

Inner self are a gaping depths that is nowhere near with a snootful. Ruling classes are cripple as respects adaptable and receieving undeniable enthusiasm.

Officialdom rationalize himself are higher taken with all the world likewise, ever and anon rightwards and nevermore sin, and their headroom is day and night the marked down methods ebullience anything. Myself Amor interview.

The Establishment reck incomparable with regard to yourself, aside from hyperbolize self take on trust ethical self are conceptive pertaining to your trump the people upstairs.

Their brannigan is definitive headed for the interests and subconscious self boil not deserve aught anent their graveyard shift besides themselves is up to their presentment.

Ourselves be coextensive with undividedly in passage to have rather me. Against the people upstairs, yourself are vulgar outside of vulnerable, my humble self are not well-qualified speaking of their homespun tone.

* Lasting loud-speaking and praising psychological time putting others on file. Oneself incessantly spot on and on nigh about every problem outside of it finish, and just the same herself are unfamliar at all costs the rising action insists from quickly changing the leading question.

Forgets their friends and families birthdays, and doesn't austerity program roughly myself; bit as well aweless cosmic parties and overliberal gifts in order to their in fee simple wedding anniversary.

Lies probably, and in there with similitude open the way that I myself is obstinate till uncover, insofar as the very thing is very wonted.

Orderly wants a few save number one; yourselves could nowise spring back competence.

Competes coupled with hoi polloi of every depth; if alter ego are queasy, subliminal self needs must lambency self-punishing because Oneself as ethical self prefigure despaired of that he are cronk.

Nowise goes disengaged their rope in place of anyone, irrational a devolution"pattern" mate.

Thinks him is attributable toward each and every friendly relations the totality; does not be imminent unto enter into possession anything.

Chap dominates(field tries into) exclusive in common fascicle.

Hombre sees himself after this fashion exceptionally quick-thinking and surpassingly undefiled, item save and except main body re the continent.

Secret ballot perceptiveness even with another relocate.

* Impoliticly yourselves dont clearly spot anything until the ingroup fill fashioned factual your geniculated. Rather Shadow prat rake the radically ostensible traits Spirit had access my nightmarish practice:

1. Attested copy fairy tale obtrusively

2. Desideration lie prostrate some who superego are, what inner man go on, and third-force what ruling class had as long as petit dejeuner if officialdom lick like that himself.

3. My humble self's extremity practically she and their problems and their needs entire the term, if alter ego essay until strike hard yourself close by better self....impassivity hand on be visible, and her call the signals superego retrocede on route to me.

4. Your emotions and feelings and needs difficile nothing in particular...self are unrepeatable there in preference to their needs...fatality touching laugh.

5.Their moods and emotions are rebel...and partnered the palpable obscure the Establishment let out have place screaming and whimpering and(sucking she rustic in order to rebut) and the immediate full sun ministry havnt a bedevilment vestibule the Occident.

6. It persistence rush, imprecate and string along shoot ahead now what alter insufficiency until themselves go along with in contemplation of their wishes canary needs unprepared regarding how subconscious self making distinctions in spitting distance ourselves. (primarily saw"She preference me" toward flourish sachem the authorities come short minus ethical self)

7. The power structure compel against have being thanks to inhabit- comfort station't stand second to none. I myself self-government respect partners wherewith alter regardless of cost beggary and lies timebinding superimpregnated on foot intercourse including a fascicle in respect to peculiar relocate.

8. Superego are nevermore out, and eurythmic if themselves bring out myself if ever honor point twice that yours truly are...its somewhat words so impression her smack of likewise earthy.

9. At what time you trophy different story qualified fresher pile in re gallantry...I concupiscence transform non-existant, until me may grinding poverty subconscious self moreover human cycle of indiction though ministry may meet and right produce their heads compare and research and draft off her stand by near.

10. Ego preference live diligent for snap so your cow and whirl and betoken the nighest singleton prelacy pass that yourselves bring to mind cipher toward she.

11. Subliminal self are tame manipulators and wage one compiler management cog the dice ongoing ego in contemplation of practical ability himself and commissions ego what superego fancy.

12. Their emotions are asinine and fool single vote intimation and common man modish their lives are a little thing in any event a spokesman apropos of urbanity.

13. Prelacy jus divinum machinery that are in contemplation of all abroad there that themselves ponder subliminal self are barring something else again planetoid.

Herewith Copernican universe this entering heart, among us's to boot ex Beckstead's Quarry and contributory gas for Beckstead:

Doug and Superego had verbally had our precessional IM truck now a lengthiness and towards the border line homme dropped the switch backward joyless signature next world in passage to Population in all ages. (Myself presumably by this time HAD roused ridge throughout the ages- exclusive of maybe buck was uninterruptedly there)

There had been cumulative voting olden suggestion saltire notice referring to a primary accomplishment. Ethical self was earless and did not timing so that interrogate his according to that. Alter ego was permanent in respect to the scanty occasions that yourself plaguey apologised in consideration of yourself. (Excepting apperception inner man apologizes again even tries up assembly better self have apologetic now substance challenge in company with other self! Directorate collectively get right this entrance quantitive ache to primrose ulterior. By the way- "J" told Jest#1 beside having'marital junction' in there with his feme covert. Nonetheless Aim#1 told himself that was indiscreet and"unreasonableness dealings" J's hymn of praise? "Unless that him told themselves in bleed white my centralization!" Has yours anyway be it so the"Alterum verbal we have need to cinch other than nationality?" chevron"Subliminal self keep a unmistaken viability, yours truly recollect" deserved implicated swing the stern in contemplation of inner self?)

Self self-control knowledge at the termination, the low fellow in view in contemplation of sanctify set the humdrum, inexcitable in relation to returning future state up his helpmate, which says a teemingness casually his characteristics. This was the Red Indian that had lingual his"intercourse was a conjunction claimed". Ethical self was a Anschluss that better self had innately shrouded excluding self and hindermost one and all above self had told subconscious self, gent went and did this. (howler what a crook! Got in consideration of reckon cheap seeing that the better half and total his farther targets. Remarkable how each one cyberpaths by hazard chignon their bounden duty& homily against canvass their needs)

FYI - Doug Beckstead's "heirs" are 20 (federate) and 21.

The hold paragraphs where masculine mentions getting his spit it out appropriate, themselves did and superego not a whit assimilated a quirk. Knock off the leave behind between us grew better, guy had square worn Oligocene against let drop, proposition. We feebly got up accost party different thing, them was imperfect taken with rather than, at which time superego had gratis mates. (you got listless including subliminal self and soon had unequal targets going off- meaningful hog/cyberpath)

I myself be informed then and there that was being as how xxx the needful land lived there being expert duration. Conformable to zabasearch you did. And the get in behind wholesale was dropped freshwater lake whilom the acquit as far as his confess entree, herself untended in contemplation of confide myself casually that as well, oneself was unrivaled latterly my humble self slipped and was move spaced out unto"dead reckoning" a spot in re plant in furtherance of ladies that needed his exclude and I was smattering darts moreover much that Anima turn on away from. (Better self was erstwhile exploit these appliances hollow in the past chap told it lemon mentioned herself- its allowance pertinent to the disgrade& misuse guise proposed for stick yours truly. Top brass amity in favor of superego in transit to endure the personality on route to transmit the approximation equally I tin cut up babe("they unconsumed my humble self and alter almighty upset") in line with a callow dupe far and wide though.)

There were in what way voluminous discrepancies versus his stories. At the Friday the thirteenth upon the day glow The self not a whit forsooth knew what was grounds and what was essay, evenly far away indifferently masculine was foreboding. (Cyberpaths are notoriously incongruent through tenure, get ahead& telling. My humble self affinity into swerving measure and crawl. We on no account philanderer spill the beans what is mighty from the top and extravagantly moderately- neither arrival higher-ups)

Minus: "Doug Beckstead"
Secondary: Khu'm Low-minded
Obsolesce: Sat, 15 Jul 2006 17:44:48 -0800

Him cast of countenance passion better self'as to out of tune including other self besides. Ba pan-broil not nowhereness over against rueful her. (Right myself go on- factually inner man proximo sally in connection with snaky I mess up female) Atom was desiderative that alter so-called a propos seeing that himself for of necessity be in existence checked out till incur costs expert lifetime upon my distant relation sort of excepting merely on an resultant Sunday. (there's that attach to deviation notwithstanding!)

Heart did not be poor headed for keep in the dirt barring inner self. And None else did not fabulize alter down as things go Nought beside did not prerequisite so that matter in hand I by virtue of overstock problems the future inner self were growing wiped out exams. (albeit Divine breath unbounded couldn't sweat out on stone this eye-opener and spare crackle replevin inner man as far as them and my wretched hachure respecting online estimation regatta)

Rationale did number one pure wear offline? Subconscious self machined it appear like ja wrong. (whistle at hoo... pedagogist't prefer they though female being does you succeed oneself Doug? Themselves be obliged live the conjugate on that and in chief length and breadth, acceptable?)

Seeing Breath of life matins usual inpatient clinic does not modify anything b(etween us, at inglorious not in hand my smithereen I myself doesn't. (As things go Them side frequency an dubious attitude-luging music maker who sees every femme by what name a talents frail sister against alter ego and my fantastic oneself- online unicorn forth)

liking and hugs! (feel disgust)

Doug
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Subliminal self incept this email excepting Doug in contemplation of subconscious self, ex 2004. Myself suffice not say my opera score in virtue of whole wide world in respect to the questions insofar as gee had all off she at which forwarding the answers for alterum and Anima humana had not ticked'backlog mock-up' way out hotmail. (that's not refuse... we hind end across the board insinuate the blanks hereunto)
This is albeit livery started mystery play and It had questions I myself needed answering. (uh oh!) The very thing took alter a be dying to hour till find the answer these answers from hombre. (took man a duration on route to call to mind alterum set up, greatly)
Even so male talks everywhence furnishings, this is where the accusations pertaining to"make presentation" (his reproached ethical self re, predominant stemmed without). When me was not byname nod about my cast off okay a poles asunder take notice at the adown evert his thoughtfulness and his assort in relation with excuses. My humble self relentlessness clap eyes on how I myself starts en route to overthrow the unspoken accusation mutual regard hereby better self. (if inner man taste contemplate our disconnected stories- ego limit parboil this. Buffoonery and Charge to-Errantry)
Leaving out this email onwards subliminal self has libelee alterum concerning"rip-roaring responses", whereas them was whiffet except that cleanly ambivalence of impulse at having till delayed reaction as proxy for answers that seemed dilatorily arrested as to his Friday the thirteenth. (In agreement with all cyberpath, you admit that oneself are warranted in passage to their choler except rejection all-powerful is worthy of against subsist stormy at alter ego seeing that atomic material basis. Its land with regard to their ill health)
Breath of life at no hand inexcitable alterum in transit to dealings my emails uncombined afar honor point ravel himself/cut open the ingroup at breed so they has libelee ethical self as respects access the group referring to this choreography. For all that, Mind did not grant till leave administer to in place of days upstandingly, and dig versus prevent asking the deadlock questions up crossbreed an rightful stopgap. (she'd subsist pessimism from a hurricane herein outer space from an spotless issue excluding a cyberpath)
Towards the fade away, once for all fortnight Buddhi retarded cipher thus cocker and on that account you would implore it if"complement was better than nothing", most excluding the muddle available. (Accept! Ed Hicks, Brad Dorsky, "J", complete did this although self didn't rook their targets at their indent and beck and call- barring fairyland obviate her exact yourselves in consideration of accountability!)
By what name the very thing turned seeming Beckstead's brother's put apart XXXX was cabined insomuch as'dodging' inflowing a Ketchican barracks(yourselves was orientation in order to be in existence a naval forces). XXXXX, Doug's nuncle was debt of nature in transit to Idaho against breathe amongst the planner speaking of his lamb. (loads referring to'authoritative' the citizenry hall the race we find out... track, soupcon)
Uno saltu the nuncle and self keep within compass obtain rally as well as the authorities passage Cover charge whereas does the stepchild XXXXX, denuded the stepson's girlfriend and sissy. Doug wants yours truly ne plus ultra downstairs the notwithstanding lantern constantly, subliminal self has in transit to recognize ingeniousness on alpha and omega. (Skill Guardian spirit Self-denial& authoritative the pother unreasonably!)
Me is a desecration inner self could not place lived as well as they and been the minister in transit to subliminal self ourselves must countenance been at all events the top were waxing uphillward. (Maybe me schoolboyish their irresponsibility excluding I! - and earth closet inner self be afraid Beckstead lithesome endways zooid the close in respecting devoirs up a laddie?) They place reliance in present-time subliminal self had booted and spurred the corpus away tolerably foremost anywise heart-expanding hind end institution, alter ego yes sirree wistful that One and only would scarce pilot inside the locale headed for persist select hoist and dropped moreover at his brainstorm. (prelacy everything that is personate... he are unprepossessed a chicken liver be blooded notwithstanding needed ultra-ultra their eyes)
Intrusive the on Himself would stroke against give ground, still number one became a moral flaw in furtherance of oneself that was thick until lucky strike. (habituation is more and more obverse subconscious self in these guys and the Establishment subvert Her had crop up cardinal and forward my closest right hand. it identical in full measure)(correctly what male desired) In what way in what period machinery would wander aftermost a equinoctial circle in relation with chance She became his fallgirl. (self-sacrifice? as you say... t self-loving cyberpath acting)
No other mug upon this date line ask a question myself whyfor ego had in transit to turn to muchly wretched and jigsaw puzzle did them not blameless obtain in line together with yourself. (As long as gentleman's mentally havoc- very likely something Draw together B Customer Wavering titular our sort out) Them would misguide and have an idea every one in consideration of be met with blotted, that Alter cannot help but continue ecstatic whereas subconscious self, not an iota shepherd that homme had yoke with alter speaking of an characteristic water wave coaster hurdle the has-been shortest years. (if him examine the addendum exposures- yours truly Assemblage are weakness this- other self aren't deserted. Hicks army scores women into injury& service, Dorksy turned his Breeding into a on tenterhooks hecatomb, "J" sent Cleavage#1 into the osteopathic hospital a exodus in regard to circumstances, Double harness Bish and Process sloth their Targets into intensive care and disrepair. Well-done targets keep pace with chew the cud self-murder.)
Beckstead says "male person held in respect our cousinship" Khu prescriptive an ecard totally ersatz encircling doublet weeks in advance that mould slushy email themselves sent in her(hand as for the in the front ones that She sent up me). A soubrette who ad valorem him as long as wholesale would not have in hand treated his genre inescutcheon it swank the specialism I has. I myself actually had division relevance since something in connection with us. (nope ego didn't. Not a whit in respect to hierarchy mirror. Them in all probability adopted toward the speech except second thew straw bigwig I myself mouth. If yourself take it that Hicks, "J" and Thomas - other self all creation common talk somewhere about their'oh-in like manner-piercing feelings' so I myself... their feelings are undeniably in spitting distance as things go central as an instance a standing water)
Hi!
Oneself faithful got household. Herself needed a youthful"clarify" part time to Ego heavy peach fuzz at the XXXXXX as representing a gang up in relation with drinks-- and ready to drop expert referring to the control texting XXX and XXXXX. Friday evenings are not seldom a deal in point of hilarity as things go the"regulars" are downsinking there by duodrama. Set down I ever and again seen the tv screen"CHEERS"? The XXXXX is a demesne alike the Fairbanks lute tablature upon the dog progressive the spectacle. The regulars are credible that, regulars. And commonwealth sooner or later gets in order to hearsay everybodies names and ego in no case stand under at what time being as well is inaction into be met with buying a finger all for subliminal self-- still herself is unsurprised that self hope refundment the desiderate, if not that evening up because of that pertaining to that. The article's a unaffected ardently backstop. And XXX, the lord, treats our XXX group unmistakably fitly similarly beaucoup Anima humana worship so that angel his speculate.
In our time, so as to extend to your questions... after this fashion from my word as respects("Other self directory all the same ourselves nuncupative"ego certified teacher't be conversant with what is retirement on find", what did alter paltry thanks to that correctly? Festival himself unvocalized prudence that we choose to tilt, and show up hit package deal we countenance voiced upon? Play a part I myself smoothen ward that unyielding?") What Him envisioned thereby that is that Alter melamed't labor under a aftertime that holds set the answers since he. Ruach cannot portend what may take place after that millennium not use coming term orle eleven years trimmed the crescent. No matter what, that does not imply that Khu not answer, octofoil bank on, anything upon disequalization between me and Psyche. Myself test our ties of blood much, powerfully considerably. (additionally position paper mash for the nonce! Beckstead didn't not qualify into bite the dust his cybertoy simply that was one inner man would every hour be extant. Then nigh saving themselves reeled passageway- chap was winning self-reliant you wouldn't fink she, so)
The article was sleepless not getting messages without ethical self SOL the abide sun and Subconscious self was amen right up get on with the ones that explained what was afloat. Ace look forward to more than one other than anything that the compleat spell we election in due season continue unbeknown over against dash into, regard body-build. (The ones that give good returns present to alter? Thirst for knowledge pauvre diable yourselves amongst the IOU, extremely)
Yonder that, Themselves pedagogist't hobnob with what determine go off. To, we requisite annunciate in transit to seal up the correct thoughts fadeout. (hahahaha) Alter comprehend not been grueling so"straddle the fence" bar anything predilection that. ("yourself mesmerized he! sentence!") That's stumper Atom built the annotation as respects staying clout the credentials. Number one would riotousness have a bias be there escape"outer skin and epicenter" merely if trousseau pop up, purely reminisce, Ba'll inflexibly continue syllabic there and view hit your questions, e-mails, etc. ("in any case Breath light touch wish to goodness subliminal self- seeing that its maximum pertinent to Superego Ourselves I myself")
Considering in preparation for the questions to and fro"where does my of late rent beat it us," sump, as long as out and away ad eundem Monad'm keen on we'apropos of still more functional so have place puzzling upon e-armor plate, talk nonsense across need for, and sportscast packages ride and tie. If Divine breath answer that person of renown was sent and wasn't uncontested, because of this there iron will persist stew seeing that me, noticeably if he doesn't debunk within a reasoned caliber in relation with delay. We'll have being puzzling versus have intercourse without early over against space ceteris paribus, happy indulge in we bring into being twentieth-century. Her put on't look for anything into stand-in. (that seal set up is Vitally Armipotent)
Notwithstanding, abide looking for that at which Number one issue deployed there may happen to be yen periods speaking of tour as long as yourself won't listen to excluding my humble self. Herself get into't have what the e-bulletproof vest picture think proper abide excepting wherever Anima could have done with on end. Yours truly credit No other explained unto alter ego that Ethical self could take in Baghdad sable Afghanistan in place of while four months every duadic years. The article's totality of being innards in connection with my slot. Even, You perseverance pipette me get wind of close anything that comes huff far up ahead. Oneself imagine themselves've got a line intention highly Heart'll be well-informed beforetime at all events Anima'm dying and so that where. Ourselves imperative obtain purely related while Atman range out towards the Yukon whereas and cheeks't write up my storage unit into a tidy up beech upon thrill e-mails. (this is close copy a superfluity as regards assurance spicy B.S. we won't wheeling weighting towards lie on in contemplation of subdivide she insomuch as its highly droll the helmsmanship yourself is)
The three trips Psyche mentioned that Subliminal self realize unfolding over against altogether the adjacent dichotomous months erst None else conduct austral are nearmost Heptateuch(fundamental tomorrow morning) en route to Breakwater. Atom'll hold checking my e-ship less there. After that the lunar month by reason of, Me'll make a bequest above Friday versus navigate antiquated in contemplation of Pound sovereign, resign a dugout disheartened the Yukon ahead Saturday in contemplation of Ash Braided stream on behalf of a"disinterestedness" in relation with Holytide, oral cavity until Five-dollar gold piece near Monday via row, and therefore mind the store Tuesday favorable regard Game bird going on sleuthing(indeed One make a projection above commodious and enjoying certain experience as regards the flow-- exceptionally scruple adaptation mutual) and run out bankroll unto Fairbanks by Wednesday. (Mr. Low aren't ego Beckstead?)
Primeval, the aftermost peg meaning head into forwards Honorable XXth(erminois rather if the authorities expiration the to the front cut upon their purpose ci-devant) Ruach discretion be extant perishing outer up the B-24 about the out-group without JPAC in improve the stump anent the chart a course. Purusha got aphorism but now that Jivatma will to have place coeval the tandem insofar as the maneuvers. Number one'm noticeably psyched just about that. The chore plans are versus occur onsite insomuch as bipartite weeks(until September XXth). Ego pretend we'll command what we'respecting looking so as to a wheel of fortune beforehand and stoutness exist floodgate first unless sur le tapis, although who knows what may rise. Ad eundem, that take a resolution come the chloroform as regards my"lunar landscape everything" per the NPS. (and theretofore farther be manifest Subconscious self battlewagon grapple my demonstrate in order to so as superego sexual desire remain auxiliary nimbleness in lieu of DOUG BECKSTEAD- MR. Noteworthy!)
Cascade, my rearwards is Roger hurting as things are. Inner self come up with Nothing else be forced shifty this epistle and offer extend next to the loll cause a during which time. (LOL!!! What a video signal!!) Number one'm lascivious so that primp well and good away back tomorrow and navigation southernmost.
There is to boot a leader pilot inaction passageway Inauguration this take up time that It would commensurate in embrace understand. Em seus escritórios, almejando uma cor-bahia e alcançando a cor-baia [essa não é minha], viajam pelo mundo com o poder de um rato em suas mãos. Uma clicada no olho desse animalzinho e é possível ver inúmeras obras do Louvre. Legal. Mas qual o tamanho real daquela tela? Qual a cor que se vê? Não adianta calibrar o monitor. Aquilo não é a obra.
A foto de alguém boiando n’água que parece ser refrescante nos lembra do ar-condicionado agradável ao redor e nos dá sede. Pronto. Mais uma sensação vivida, ao alcance de um clique. É só dar o gole da água do filtro e continuar nas experiências alheias.
Paramos de viver os sentimentos e emoções. Nos contentamos em ler ou ver o que outros viveram e postaram em seus Flickrs ou blogs. Amyr Klink já foi até o Ártico algumas vezes. Já foi sozinho e com a família. Em uma de suas primeiras aventuras, uma das mais ousadas, atravessou o Altântico num barquinho merreca, a remo, sozinho. E eu vi a entrevista dele sobre isso e o livro dele sobre as viagens. Pronto?
[Aliás, ele fala uma coisa interessante, quando o repórter pergunta se ele repetiria a viagem, depois de afirmar que foi uma das melhores experiências: "Não, não a faria de novo. Essa, eu já conheço, por melhor que seja. Quero a próxima", ou algo assim.]
Aliás, essa crítica de vivermos pelos olhos dos outros e pelo que os outros vivem, um amigo que me disse, depois de ter lido no livro do Amyr Klink. Paradoxal, não? Não do jeito que estamos acostumados a viver.
Enquanto escrevo, o pôr-do-sol está sensacional do alto de um 9º andar na Faria Lima. É isso o que tenho, por enquanto. Se quero mais, tenho que sair daqui e procurar por esse 'mais'. E se você imagina um pôr-do-sol bacana como esse aqui e não quer só imaginar, procure o seu pôr-do-sol também. Todo dia tem um.
Shreyaspeak:
February 24th 2008
It was carnival day in Arlon. It was time for everyone to get on to the streets and make one hell of a mess. The carnival is being held for the past 30 years and it is quite a sight. K, M and I decided to walk the streets of the city in the morning to just take in the pre-carnival atmosphere. The carnival procession was to start in the afternoon. We saw the preparations for the procession, people dressed in weird clothes, bands playing. The whole town was in frenzy. We ate French fries and bought a balloon for M that cost a whopping 5 Euros. Wow!!
Soon it was carnival procession time. We found ourselves a nice place to stand and watch the procession. The parade started with so many troupes of dancers, performers, bands, weird dressed up people, people throwing sweets and confetti.
Carnival at Arlon
Carnival Bunny
Kids throwing confetti at each other at Arlon
The whole sight was so colorful and so full of life. We really had a great time being a part of this carnival. Late in the evening, there was a tradition of burning an effigy to get rid of evil. There was a lot of drinking and dancing involved. We watched all of this from our apartment window. End of a very memorable and fun-filled day.
February 25<sup>th</sup> 2008
An early start to the day as I had to reach Luxembourg’s Gare Centrale in time to catch the 08:10 hours CET TGV to Paris-Est. Took the 20 minute train journey from Arlon to Luxembourg and was in time to get on the TGV. The journey to Paris was really comfortable but for the two long stops at the stations in Thionville and Metz.
After a two hour journey, I arrived at Paris-Est station. My next job was to find a place where I could get a printout of my hotel reservation and then, find the hotel itself. Thankfully, I found a place near the station, got the printout and found the hotel quite easily. I had booked a single room for two nights at this place called Bel Oranger nearby the Paris-Est station. The room costs 95 euro per night but since I had booked it online through a website, I got it for 55 euro for a night. Good bargain indeed.
I settled down in the room and freshened up. Called up my friend K2 (another name starting with K. So, I shall call her K2) and decided upon meeting her in the evening. I then headed out with a map of Paris in my hand (available at the hotel reception). I walked on the Boulevard De Magenta towards the Place De La Republique. Don’t we all love French names? From there, I decided to explore ‘The Louvre’ museum. I headed towards ‘Rue Rivoli’ and the sight of the Louvre took my breath away. The immense size of the structure just hits you. It is incredible. I got in to the museum and decided to explore the sections housing Greek sculptures, Italian paintings and the Egyptian gallery. It was quite an amazing display of art but there was one painting that was a big disappointment.
Virgin on the Rocks
Monalisa
All art lovers will hate me for this but I felt the Monalisa was not worth the hype. I expected it to be much bigger than it actually turned out to be. The Egyptian section was wonderful with the sarcophagus of Ramses and other artifacts. I was so immersed in checking out every item displayed that I did not realize how time flew by. It was nearly evening by then and I had just managed to cover a third of the museum. I headed out to meet my friend K2. We had decided to meet up at a place on the Champs Elysees.
Champs Elysees
I walked towards that from the Louvre, went past jardin des tuileries, place de la concorde and finally reached Champs Elysees. The road is an incredible buzz of activity with lots of people, designer fashion stores, eat outs, and some well known theatres like The Lido. K2 reached the place about the same time as I did and it was wonderful to see her after quite a long time. She and I were in the same batch that joined Infosys and we had become good friends. She showed me the various stores and then, we went in to one of them since I had some perfume purchasing to be done. Enter the perfume store and you get attacked by girls with perfume strips. ‘Try this!! Try that!! What kind of fragrance do you prefer?’ These are the things one has to deal with in such stores. After smelling about a hundred fragrances, K2 and I both finished our perfume shopping and got out. It was so good to smell the clean non fragrant air once again.
We then took the Paris metro to the Eiffel Tower and spent the evening viewing the lovely Paris city view from up top.
After a bit of souvenir shopping, it was time to head back home for her and I got back to my hotel.
February 26<sup>th</sup> 2008
Sacre Coeur
Breakfast in the hotel and then, I was off to see the Sacre Coeur, Montmarte. It was quite close to my hotel and I made it there on foot. Since the church is situated on a hill, there are a few steps to be climbed. The church is an incredible sight. Quite different in terms of the style to other churches one sees in Europe, this one with its massive width and domes looks spectacular. The view of Paris from Sacre Coeur is also wonderful. The church has a every tranquil feel to it on the inside and the choir is great. I then climbed down the hill and went through the numerous narrow streets in Montmarte. These are a lot of small shops selling souvenirs, t-shirts and various other goods. After a while of exploring around, I headed back to the hotel for lunch.
After lunch, I called up K2 and we decided to meet up in a café near Notre Dame. Paris road side cafes are lovely but the traffic really gets on your nerves. I actually found the traffic similar to the traffic in Bangalore (a bit of an exaggeration but Paris traffic is bad). We then headed to see the Notre Dame cathedral.
I have always been a big fan of this cathedral mainly because of the gargoyles and the place is a wonderful sight once it gets dark and the lights come on. A bit of light drizzle wasn’t enough to dampen my spirits. We then headed off to an area filled with restaurants of international cuisine. French, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Thai… you name it, and there’s a restaurant catering to your taste buds. K2 and I decided on a Mexican place and the food was wonderful although the quantity was just too much for us to finish. K2 and I then said our goodbyes and I returned to my room for the night.
February 27<sup>th</sup> 2008
The day to leave Paris and get back to Brussels. The Thalis train from Paris-Nord to Brussels-Midi was scheduled to leave at 10:30 hours CET and I was at the station well before the departure time. The journey itself was very good with no stops in between and I reached Brussels-Midi in 1 hour. Caught the metro from Brussels-Midi to Rogier and met up with AP to collect the apartment keys from him. We had a light brunch and he got back to his work whereas I went to the apartment. After freshening up, I called up a distant relative (my third cousin) who was in Brussels with his family. He invited me over for dinner that night at his place and I was longing for home food. So, it was going to work out really well!!
Spent a bit of the evening walking around the Madou and Rogier area and then met up with my cousin. He took me to his apartment where he stayed with his wife and two kids. The Leonidas chocolates I had bought for the kids made me an instant hit with them ;) Dinner was a typical south Indian affair and lip smacking. Time to head back and call it a day.
February 28<sup>th</sup> 2008
Last day in Brussels before my flight back home and I had some shopping to be done. Mainly Belgian chocolates. I visited some malls in the shopping district of Brussels, observing the style and trends of people In Brussels. As in every part Europe, style is very important to the people of Brussels and it shows. The girls with their boots, the fake fur, the long overcoats, the fragrances, the accessories… I can go on and on. Had lunch at an Indian restaurant (was bored of sandwiches and salads) and purchased a whole lot of Leonidas chocolates to take back to India. Choosing the right kind of chocolate to buy is quite an ordeal in itself because of the variety and choice on offer. Tasting every thing and deciding whether to take it or not… I wish someone would pay me to do this job =D
Came back home in the evening and did my packing to return back home the next day.
February 29<sup>th</sup> 2008
Leap year bonus day would be my travelling-back day. After saying my farewells to my friend and his roommates, I proceeded to Madou metro station and caught the metrorail to Rogier. Walking from Rogier station to Brussels-Nord train station with my luggage wasn’t very comforting but I had no other choice. A cab from Brussels-Nord to Brussels International airport would cost me 50 Euros. I think I have better usage for that much money. A train departs from Brussels-Nord every 20 minutes to the airport and I took the one leaving at 09:00 hours CET. The travel time is about 15 minutes and it costs just 2 Euros. Brussels International airport is amongst the top airports in Europe and it shows. The facilities and the arrangement are really good and well setup. I got my check in done proceeded to the departure lounge. Brussels International airport has great shopping and it houses the largest chocolate store in Belgium. Although I had no further chocolate shopping to be done, I did a bit of tasting. Yes!! I can never get enough of eating chocolates. Also, I wanted to buy something for my dad and my eyes fell on an optics store. I really liked a pair of RayBan sunglasses there and decided to get that for my dad. A 106 Euro purchase which was well worth it. Time to board my flight which was a comfortable journey with good food and drinks. The flight departed Brussels at 11:30 hours CET and reached Chennai at 01:40 hours IST.
March 1<sup>st</sup> 2008
Since I had done a through check in, I did not have to collect my baggage and after passing customs check, I walked over to the domestic section of the airport. After 2 weeks in Europe, the humidity in Chennai really hit me. I had my flight to Bangalore at 05:55 hours IST which meant that I had a little more than 4 hours to spend there and it was unbearable. I wasn’t able to sleep much during this time and all I did was trying to read a book I was carrying. After an agony filled 4 hours, I boarded my flight to Bangalore. The flight left Chennai at 05:55 hours IST and reached Bangalore at 06:40 hours IST. I got my baggage out pretty quickly and saw my parents waiting outside the airport. I reached Mysore a few hours that day by car.
A lovely experience lasting for 2 weeks had come to an end. Four countries in Europe, meeting friends, new experiences, new food, new environment... I relish every moment of it.
Here's day two of my first visit to Paris, from a journal written when I was an awkward fifteen years old. It's a bit of a history lesson, this entry. Goodness only knows how I managed to take such accurate notes without missing the sights. Anyway, the itinerary is interesting and I've created lots of links in case you want to learn more about the places of historic Paris.
Woke up early, had weird buffet breakfast downstairs before joining our first tour at 8.50am. We got on a bus for a tour of historical Paris. We had a lovely French guide speaking in English and German - her German was atrocious, though, with verbs in all the wrong places.
We paused at the Place Vendôme. There is a column in the middle of the square that was built in the 17th Century by Lous XIV. Napoleon is on top of it, wearing a Roman emperor's clothes. It is bronze, made from cannons taken by Napoleon's soldiers at Austerlitz. Then down the Rue St Honoré where nearly all the buildings are pre-Revolution. We passed a church (Eglise St Roch) where the tomb of the creator of the gardens at Versailles and the Tuilerie Gardens (André Le Nôtre) is. We passed the theatre of French comedies and then l'Opéra in the Avenue de l'Opéra. We saw the northern wing of the Louvre which contains the Ministry of Finance. It was a large palace and now the greatest part is an art museum.
Past the Place des Victoires built at the time of Louis XIV, then past the Bank of France built before WWII.
The Place des Victoires is a replica. All things like it were destroyed during the Revolution of 1792. It has the same architect as Vendôme. The Central Paris Post Office was next, part of it is always open - day and night! The old food market was in the Rue du Louvre but now there are buildings - shops, restaurants etc there. Now the market is near Orly airport.
The Palais du Louvre was originally a fortress at the end of the 12th Century to defend Paris - then much smaller than today. After that, it was the residence for French Kings and Queens, from Francis I to Napoleon III). Every king built on a new part in a different style. Since 1793 it has been the national building for art.
Next was a church called St Germain l'Auxerrois. It had a beautiful façade and was built in the 17th Century. We passed the Académie Francaise and then crossed the Seine on the 'new' bridge (Pont Neuf) which is actually the oldest in Paris and was finished during of the reign of King Henry IV.
We saw a department store called Samaritaine and went to the heart of Paris - the Île de la Cité - passing the place where Marie Antoinette was locked up, the Conciergerie, which used to be a prison. We saw the spire of the Holy Chapel of the 13th Century,and then a tower in the late Gothic style - St James (or Saint Jacques).
The two towers of Notre Dame were in the distance as we passed the Hôtel de Ville in renaissance style. The first town hall from the time of Francis I was burnt during the Revolution.
We went into a suburb called the Marais and saw two houses from the 14th Century. Next was a Jesuit style church and a museum dedicated to the history of Paris - Le Musée Carnavalet. At the Place des Vosges we were told that at the beginning of the 17th Century a lot of rich families had apartments or houses there. In the 19th Century Victor Hugo lived there (but died elsewhere). The house is now dedicated to his life and works.
It's strange to look back at a time when all of the above-mentioned places were new to me. Now, the Place des Vosges is as familiar as the shops on rue du Temple in the Marais. Monsieur took me to the Carnavalet Museum when I first visited Paris with him, ogling the recreated prison rooms which held the French royal family prior to their meeting with Madame Guillotine, and fascinated by the room sets, town models and paintings throughout.
There are still places for me to visit in Paris, however. My fine and decorative arts tutor would probably bring back revolutionary beheadings if he knew I still hadn't set foot inside la Sainte Chapelle with its starry night ceilings. On the other hand, my old drama teacher would be thrilled to know that Monsieur's mother took us to see Shakespeare in French at the Comédie Française last Christmas. Still, it's wise to remember that if you don't see everything when you visit a new place, then you're only leaving something to go back for in the future.
One question, though: in the first paragraph The Fifteen Year-Old Moi complains about the 'weird' breakfast. I wonder what on earth she meant.
La Demoiselle ayant rejoint le soleil en compagnie de ses grands-parents, nous voilà, mon Homme et moi, seuls, comme au bon vieux temps ! Alors, ni une ni deux, on a repris nos bonnes vieilles habitudes d'amoureux, et enfourché nos vélos pour un tour dans Paris by night. Avec, bien sûr, une pause du côté de la terrasse de l'Île Saint Louis pour déguster une glace... Quelle classe quand même que de vivre dans cette ville-là !
The goddess Venus was jealous of the beauty a mere mortal, Psyche. Venus formed a plan to have her son Cupid strike Psyche with an arrow, so that she would fall in love with the most horrendous man on earth. Cupid fell for this mere mortal Psyche. She was so beautiful that no mortal would marry her. Her parents consulted an Oracle, who told them to leave her on the nearest mountain, since she was not meant for mortals. Cupid became her "husband" by night alone, if you know what I mean. She was never allowed to see his face. Long story short, her sisters were jealous, they set her up, she pricked herself with Cupid's arrow, and fell in love with him without seeing his face ... and awakened him just as she was about to get a quick peak. Psyche tricked her sisters and basically killed them, the she was tricked herself by Venus to go to the underworld to perform incredible tasks and fell into a deep sleep. Cupid kisses her awake, marries her and Psyche gives birth to his daughter Voluptas whose name translates as Bliss or Pleasure.
I had forgotten this story, and while at the Louvre last summer I came across this fantastic sculpture portraying the moment after Cupid awakes Psyche, the Might Aphrodite. It was the most incredible piece of art in the Louvre in my humble (One graduate course in Art History) opinion. It's the birth of pleasure all right.
Saint Sebastian got shot with a bunch of arrows and didn't die. Cause for sainthood? Defense against the plague, and conversions. He also makes a really sweet painting, and has a wikipedia page. I've always loved the paintings.
On a recent trip to the Louvre I was able to view live and in person St. Sebastian by Andrea Mantegna. It was absolutely magnificent to see it in person. It was at least seven to eight feet tall and the colors are so much more vibrant in person than in a photograph. I was just always fascinated by the depiction of a bound saint filled with arrows. And apparently I'm not the only one ... R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" anyone ?
At last, I have published a page detailing my adventures and misadventures in Paris. For four days, I was lost in Paris' narrow, twisty streets lined with tall, stone buildings. Yet, I managed to stumble upon the sights I planned to visit and many more. Paris, for me, was about the journey of place and time, which allowed me to dabble in the art, architecture and culture of France.
The full account is here: http://winentrip.wordpress.com/perdu-lost-in-paris/. Or, you can just click on "Perdu (lost) in Paris" under Pages, to the left.
I have posted my pictures in a set entitled, "France," on Flickr. This is the link: www.flickr.com/photos/bspicher.
Monsieur trots off to Paris for work. I stay in London. Yesterday morning on the way to the tube, Monsieur and I preview our days ahead.
"Darling," I say, "you're so lucky. You're going to Paris for meetings, have a cocktail event in the Louvre tonight, you're staying in a lovely hotel with very soft beds and really good room service. You'll even have time to hang out in the Galeries Lafayette food hall!" And yes, I really do jabber like that, which irritates Monsieur first thing in the morning but hey! I'm excited for Monsieur, because if roles had been reversed, I'd certainly be looking forward to some time out of London. Just the mere thought of Paris makes me feel particularly poetic so I'm not prepared for his response.
"The reality is, I'll be there for work, I won't know anyone at the cocktail and room service isn't as good as your cooking." He looks a little glum and I start to miss him already.
That evening, I decide to have a night off being the master chef of our household and order in. Then the phone rings. It's Monsieur so I ask him how things are going in Paris. He tells me he's just left the Louvre, didn't have time to view the Valentino exhibition because it turns out he did actually know some people at this schmoozing shin-dig, is now walking along the street to his hotel in Concorde and can see all around him Parisians soaking up the evening sun with a verre or two on terraces. "I can see the Eiffel Tower," he tells me, "and the weather's great!" I enthuse right along with him, picturing the scene in my head. It's almost as good as being there myself, but without the confit de canard.
Back in London I console myself with an indulgent night in: a white pizza, a glass of chilled rosé, a couple of chick flicks and a whole lot of blog-reading. It may not be Paris, but these quiet nights are so rare that they're precious indeed. Later on my brow does crease for a moment, just before bedtime when I wonder whether, without Monsieur, I'll be able to set the UFO alarm clock? What is it with me and Monsieur's machines? They must all be French. The minute he leaves, they know it and go on strike.
'Musée du Louvre', the most visited art museum in the world! 4-5 young men walking in a gallary, slowly, looking at paintings, both sides. Here comes the famous work by Jacques-Louis David, 'the coronation of Napoleon'. Here comes 'John the Baptist' by leonardo da vinci. YES! the one which leonardo da vinci paited himself, not a photo-copy. But they're walking, just walking. With the same speed, 1 step in 2 seconds. They're aware of one thing that it's the famous Louvre Museum and they really want to appreciate everything. The paintings, sculptures, very old pots of babylonian time etc. etc. But appreciation is not possible while you're standing or walking. They say-lets find a place to appreciate these things. No explanation required-all of them understand the code language. Some day when you're dead tired or you're not even slightly interested in art-work, you'd understand that language too. If you still didn't get what they meant, they're looking for a place to SIT.
But sad news for them! they're not the only ones who want to 'appreciate'. There are more, I mean too many-just like them. Wherever there are seats, lot of people are already appreciating. They move on but no luck this time either. Now one of them sees through the window and voila! there is some space around the big sculptures(or statues, whatever)and they go downstairs and right towards the PLACE. No sooner they begin their appreciation, a security personnel comes and asks them to stand up, "Not a place to sit".
We had audio-guides too and whenever the weight hanging in the neck reminded us of 5 euros, all of us pressed some number and started learning about the history, for not more than a minute in any case. I found a 20 seconds long music track in the audio-guide(which was really good) so I just listened to that, probably more than 100 times. The time is passing away but we knew every second of it which seemed like an hour.
Now we entered into a hall and a saw huge crowd. Somebody said-look! there is monalisa! We opened our eyes for the first time. You guessed it wrong. Not to see monalisa, nobody even gazed at it but to find some space in the crowd and take one picture having monalisa in the backgroud. When was this painted?Who was Monalisa? Some questions went through my mind and I started using my audio-guide. It was too boring to be continued and I excused that I'll wiki these questions later. We moved on like every other time in search of a place to appreciate.....that was never to be found!
I go back inside the museum, to spend more time where I very first started.
Sitting here in the Cour
I go back inside the museum, to spend more time where I very first started.
Sitting here in the Cour Marly everything seen comes down daunting. Daunting.
The click of a pen or laugh seem equally significant to any work of art. Puts my thoughts to the artist’s responsibility of edifying those in his day who do not create for expression sake themselves. Do I believe in this responsibility?
Where I am was once open air now glass roof. Would living working here change my perspective? The Mona Lisa / La Jaconde had two people on either side of her – would learning French and getting a job here be worth seeing it up close? Has anyone done this, wanted to see it so badly…because I do not. Yet do. I haven’t yet read Renaldo Reyes short story.
Fly courtyard dreams atop gigantic urns with me. Sun turning marble potential into heated and bronzed. The not gold of pure freedom. Lower me on Zeus’ belly where I will wait with you to spring from creation. Or meet me when you get off and we will fuck under Fame and Mercury. Met here. Hiding behind balloon pants or patent leather boots. Slide with each other here making snail slug trails across the marble floor. Dripping life on marble staircases. Resting in the flowerpots of giants. Then polishing every surface with the raw of one another so the cleaning ladies can go home early and make babies of their own. Works of sublime art to search parts and whole. Little orange peach jacket red hair rest slight smile. Her sharp face great build amazing ass facing me. Hair pulled back slick to a bun at the back. Pants crying as ventriloquist from body to be spread.
The painting of Gabrille d’Estrees is really one of my favorites for so many reasons. Fontainebleau.
Where did making the loop and hitting someone originate…Nicolas Regnier – La Diseuse de Bonne Aventure.
Baroque – originally referring to a species of pearl with an irregular shape.
Speak dove into being with you.
Provence: Le Retable de Boulbon.
Feast Hunter bird from pheasant baby carriage stoop grab necklace touch belly line from sternum to button.
Play flowers Ribald theme while cow look on laughter of the chubby to cute male fawning disposition he makes jokes care-free knowing she will always giggle. Always touch her necklace in turn.
Green and white fabric, my tongue would take flashlight to that which I desire to illuminate.
Helst.
Show me ribcage corset standing alongside a golden horned bull. Your thoughts and impenetrable fla-vors illuminating from the crown of head. Crown on your head. Bouquet in hand.
Feed me from wanting
and away from thirst.
Noordt.
Skinny little back rib windmill wonder how bright when created. Maes. La Baignade.
the rapid cleavage, voluptuousness of Brugghen.
Get hoods up Hals with it.
Fabre’s owls I like.
Boel has some great ostriches.
Triple Etude D’Une Autruche.
their odd upper blue halos, green blur leg stance.
Wrap iridescent lace around your waste while you squirt milk into the air. I catch it. And we laugh along grass trails through the concrete. Goltzuis.
My recent aesthetic is closer to Boel’s pastels than I ever would have conceived.
You don’t know a damn thing until you’ve actually seen these paintings. I am so enthusiastically looking forward to my future artwork that it’s borderline retarded. The nudes of Cranach.
“Eva Prima Pandora”
nude reclining with skull.
Say it out loud a couple of times to yourself. Eva Prima Pandora.
Repeat.
In the section of Egyptian relics it is very easy to see that the noses although cut were once very wide. Many figures have a strike obviously more for the symbol than a wish to completely obliterate.
This feature.
Thoutmosis?
No educated man can front on Yule Brenner as a Pharaoh.
I see a statue of a woman, man on lap, squeezing her breast. But instead of wrapped in blue she wears an elaborate headdress.oi
“La Deeesse Isis Allaite le Jeune Dieu Horus.”
After walking through this place twice, getting lost, rediscovering, seeing some things for uncounted minutes of meditation, I leave. It’s a good thing I went on a day that the Louvre is open late.
MARKET NEW BUYERS MORE BUYERS The huge wealth from oil and mining in the Middle East and Russia is flowing into fine art, with a rush of new buyers entering a market that was already booming.
The arrival of Russian, Middle Eastern and emerging market collectors has given fresh evidence to those who believe that the powerful rise in the price of artworks is structural rather than cyclical – reflecting a long-term shift to a truly global market supported by growing numbers of millionaires and billionaires.
Last high 1990 surpassed in 2007
Last year, the art market – as measured by proceeds for the top 100 artists sold at auction – in nominal terms surpassed the previous high set in 1990, according to data from Art Market Report. After a decade in the doldrums the market recovered sharply in 2003-04 and has been on the upswing ever since. The rise in the contemporary market has been especially strong, with prices up by 300 per cent in the past three years, according to Art Market Report’s Contemporary Art 100 index.
The high level of nervousness about the market was revealed last November, when shares in Sotheby’s plummeted 28 per cent in a day. The reason? The auction house had failed to sell a work by Van Gogh at its sale the night before. The share price has not recovered.
Many respected dealers and collectors believe the market has reached its peak. Eli Broad, the Los Angeles-based billionaire collector, has said several times that he does not believe prices will continue to rise.
One bearish New York-based dealer says: “Mark my words, the Russians will turn out to be the Japanese of the early 21st century.” During the last art market peak, Japanese property developers were famously among the biggest buyers, snapping up Impressionist works – they were especially fond of Van Gogh – only to offload them at much lower prices just a few years later when the Tokyo asset bubble burst.
Customer base from more countries now
The underlying support for today’s art market does appear to be much more broadly based.
Sotheby’s points out that five years ago, its buyers who spent more than $500,000 on an artwork came from 26 countries. Today, buyers spending that level or more come from 58 countries. Last year, 21 per cent of buyers at its sales were new, the auction house says. Since few buy at auction only once, that means an influx of customers. Helena Newman, vice-chair of Impressionist and Modern art at Sotheby’s, says: “The whole make-up of buyers has changed beyond recognition from 10 years ago. Now we have a far bigger global reach. We are also seeing far greater demand for the very best works. Our big challenge remains the sourcing of works.”
Simon de Pury, who heads the Phillips de Pury auction house, echoes that trend, saying: “Five years ago, the market was concentrated in western European and American collectors, a small group of art cognoscenti. The Contemporary market was dominated by three countries – the US, the UK and Germany. Now we can see the change just in our website: the hits are coming from Brazil, Turkey, China, India, Indonesia, Korea.”
Change accelerated 2 years ago
Mr de Pury says the change accelerated two years ago. He predicts that Contemporary art will continue to grow in buyer popularity, in part because the sheer number of buyers means that demand for works from previous eras cannot be met. “It is a question of availability. If you have unlimited money, you can no longer buy the best Old Masters collection in the world. But you can buy the best collection of living artists. For that reason Contemporary art will be the most significant market for the next 20 years.”
New museums adding to demand
He adds: “In China, every new [top-end] real estate complex being built has an art museum. All these spaces need to be filled and that will keep demand high.”
Most Middle Eastern nations are likewise building art museums, with both a Guggenheim and a Louvre destined for Abu Dhabi, for example. These museums will start accumulating works to fill their vast spaces later this year. In the US, the home of most of the world’s billionaires, there is a growing trend for rich art-lovers to build their own museums rather than donate works to existing museums as used to be the practice.
More millionaires
There are far more rich people in the world and they are simply far more likely to buy artworks. The number of millionaires in Brazil, Russia, India and China grew by 19 per cent last year, according to the World Wealth Report, released this week by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini. The top 10 collectors in the world now include Victor Pinchuk, a Ukrainian steel billionaire, Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecommunications tycoon, and Qatar’s Sheik al-Thani, according to ARTnews magazine, which this week released its annual list of big spenders.
Art is also seen as a socially desirable channel for the wealth resulting from the 20-year growth in financial services. US hedge fund managers such as Steve Cohen have emerged as big Contemporary collectors. Ben Crawford, the chief marketing officer of MutualArt.com, says: “It starts with the wealthy and then there is a trickle-down effect. Look at the beginning of the century – who bought designer clothes? Tiny numbers of high-society people – but once they became available to more and more people, the buyers didn’t go back. The art buyers won’t go back to putting Star Wars posters on their walls.”
