Benefits of Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation provides numerous benefits:
• Your website will be found – there is little point having a website that nobody can find.
• A website that's optimised for search engines is also optimised for users too.

Some of the most basic aspects of search engine optimisation include:

• Finding words and phrases that Internet users are looking for. Target the wrong keywords and your efforts will be in vain.
• Placing these important words and phrases in prominent places on each page, for example page title, headings, links
• Writing efficient HTML code that search engines can easily sift through
• Providing great content that other websites will want to link to

Big ideas with big money backing them couldn't turn these sites into winners

It was only a little over a decade ago that we were told the internet would completely revolutionize how we would shop, read, interact, learn, invest, and smell. Maybe the order was a tall one and maybe the internet didn't replace our traditional methods of doing all of these things, but it certainly has given us more options. The 1990s saw the proliferation of websites devoted to e-commerce of one sort or another as well as e-applications. These resulted in the dot.com boom that became a dot.com fizzle as everyone tried to tap into this new online market for their products and services. From Homer Simpson and his Compuglobalhypermeganet Systems to The Onion's e-graters.com, everyone was taking a swipe at the hysteria.

Some sites have managed to survive and thrive, ebay.com and amazon.com being the two most notable.

The Business Pundit lists for us the top 25 Internet Startups that didn't make it. All your favourites are there, including pets.com, etoys.com, and the spam-friendly lycos.com.

-------

Sehr geehrte Frau Mohn, bitte nehmen Sie diesen Aufruf nicht ernst. Es ist nur Satire. Aber das wissen Sie ja.

suchmaschinen sollen daten suchen. deshalb heißen sie suchmaschinen. was suchmaschinen eigentlich n

First, before I forget, work has officially begun on the New Rat Show - guaranteed to be bigger, bet

First, before I forget, work has officially begun on the New Rat Show - guaranteed to be bigger, better, and more badass. I'll post test shots as they arrive. If anyone would like to compose a theme song and shoot it my way, that'd be cool...

And so I was looking at Smart Pens on Froogle, came across a book by the founder of Lycos, and checked out Lycos in utter amazement that Lycos is still around. I remember when Lycos was a big shot - right on my new out of the Box Windows machine loaded with NETSCAPE came a big blaring icon to click for Lycos. On television, Lycos Lycos Lycos. Then again this is the internet, and all good things become found and then settle. Sort of like Circus Peanuts or Clark Bars. When have you ever seen a commercial for Circus Peanuts? Yet, they have their fan base out there - they really do.

So Lycos displays the weather for your area right on the front page and, I found this to be really neat, gives you suggestions on what to do for the day. And it suggested "start a lemon ade stand." So being the morbidly over curious individual that I am, I clicked. I clicked and it gave Lycos search results. Of course. It's a search engine. Google has it's logo doubling as "learn what today's all about" and Lycos has "learn what today's weather is good for." Neat stuff. Yahoo is incredibly lame. I haven't been to yahoo in years...except really to occasionally play Yahoo pool.

Moving on (and this is probably my longest post yet?) the first hit was a charity site ran by sunkist. Yes, if you are a kid between the ages of 7 to 12 willing to raise money for charity, Sunkist will GIVE you a FREE lemonade stand. That's badass. I never ran a lemonade stand as a kid. As a kid I always assumed it was like "these things happen." Never played baseball, or ran a stand, or anything, because I thought it was something that happened to you, didn't realize you just had to ask your parents. It wasn't like in the movies or video games where a magical fairy or Angel or weird Old Wise Man comes outta the trees and says, "YOU'VE BEEN CHOSEN TO RUN A LEMONADE STAND!" However, that was my view on the world as kid, until I got much older and realized my parents were not the mystical all knowing beings I thought they were. Grrr...if only I was 12 again...or they upped the age to 25, or I knew for sure I could get away with applying for a stand...then I'd totally run one this Summer.

A Two-part Rule for Naming Your Startup

What’s in a company name? Plenty. It’s your first opportunity to brand yourself. Get it

What's in a company name? Plenty. It's your first opportunity to brand yourself. Get it right and you'll stand out as clever, useful, and memorable to potential users and investors — even if your product isn’t any good. But get it wrong and you'll flame out before your product even gets out of beta.

So, what makes Brightmail, PayPal and IronPort great names, but Lycos, Xobni and Vidoop really lousy? It turns out there's a formula for effective naming and it's surprisingly simple.

Look at many of the most successful brands and you'll notice they're often compound names, consistently made up of two components:

a word that relates to the company product in a direct, literal sense, establishing a clear association between the brand and what the company does.

a word not literally related to the product, but rather a metaphorical adjective to evoke a differentiating characteristic or “feeling” about the company’s product.

Our minds are built to make connections, mostly at a subconscious level. When a metaphor is detected, it triggers a process in our brains that associates the metaphor with the next object or reference. This naming system forces the mind to take the cognitive step of associating the metaphor to the product it represents, thus forming a positive association to the brand. And once your brain has woven the connection, it sticks, so there's a great chance your company name won't be forgotten.

So when we break down the name Brightmail, we see that "mail" indicates what the product does -- they make email -- while "bright" is metaphorical, framing their product in a positive light. This same logic applies to PayPal; “pay” is literal, “pal” is metaphorical. Ditto with IronPort, a provider of email and web security products -- “iron” is a metaphor for strength and “port” is a literal reference to what the company product protects: network ports.

Search company Lycos tried a made-up word, to ill effect. After all, what's a lycos? Xobni makes a cool email service, but someone had to tell me that xobni is "inbox" spelled backwards. Vidoop is just yucky. Reminds me of, well, you know.

Of course there are startups that get so far out in front of their competitive fields, or whose products are so exemplary, that names which ought to have been tricky are nevertheless well received.

Consider Twitter. If you had asked me a year-and-a-half ago, I’d have said it was a terrible name -- all I could think of was "twit." But people’s associations with Twitter are good because its communication tool is first-in-class and offers a great experience.

I was recently asked to consult with a startup that is considering re-naming itself. It's a good thing, because the name they're using now is totally confusing. It's one of those Google-wannabe made-up words that sounds vaguely Latin, but isn't. Worst of all, it doesn't tell users like me anything about the company's product (they archive web pages). When the company explained the name to me, I got even more confused.

In my view, while site archiving is useful (and they do it well), this probably isn't a broad-based enough service to be elevated to the level of a consumer utility, as search or micro-blogging (Twitter) have been. This means their made-up name is unlikely to ever be turned into a verb (like "to google" or "to tweet").

I suggested some new names, based on the two-part formula:

ArchiText: Archi sounds like architect, a good association. It also refers to archive. "Arch" as a prefix is "chief," so metaphorically it evokes priority. Text is literal for content. Combined you might get: "storage for vital web content."
PermaPage: "Perma" evokes impermeability. "Page" is literal.
ArchWeb: "Arch" for "archive," and the metaphorical "priority." Web is web.

by Edita Smith
World wide web is a perfect source for finding any information about any topic you ar

by Edita Smith

World wide web is a perfect source for finding any information about any topic you are looking for. You can research a lot of information without leaving your desk. But most of the time a common problem is that you frequently waste an important portion of your valuable time with the irrevelant search results.

This article discusses the best ways to get better results from the search engines. To be able to receive the best results in terms of relevancy, you need to give some idea to the search engine. Although some people think of search engines as simple ask question and get answer robots, search engines do not programmed to work exactly in this manner. Instead, search engines work more like complicated database search and retrieval programs in which you direct the search engines about your query.

It is very important to give some idea to search engines about what you are looking for. What are you planning to find? Are you piling up any information regarding a comprehensive topic such as astrology? If any information coming out with the word "astrology" is important for you, then you are really lucky, because millions of search results will be available for you to analyze! And this is perfect solution for you if you are there to waste your spare time! Indeed irrevelant results bother many people because they try the first web site which came out as the result of search, and go to the next one, and then to the next one and so on. Altough many hours are spent in this trial and error method, the chances to reach the web site needed is still pretty low. The reason is that search engine will bring any website which includes the word "astrology" in any of its part. Can you imagine this? All the websites in world wide web with the tiny word "astrology".

Being as specific as possible is the only best solution to get what you want. If you are in front of your computer with the idea of getting more information about "Chinese Astrology", then immediately transfer this info to the search engine and type the phrase -Chinese Astrology- to the search engine. In this query, search engine will rank the web sites in an order of importance and will try to do its best to bring the websites which uses the terms "Chinese" and "astrology" at the same time according to their relevancy. You can get more relevant result by using quotes for the phrase you are searching. This way you command the search engine to give results containing both Chinese and astrology at the same time as one entity instead of retrieving one word and the other as seperate words. By doing this your search results will be filtered further and you will be closer to what you are looking for.

Web directories are great if you are already know what you are looking for. For specific queries you should prefer to look into directories other than search engines because they are organized to navigate back and forth of the directory tree with categories and sub- categories structure. Web directories may not give reference close to what you are looking for, but they are very time efficient and give perfect results since they are created according to specific topics and sub topics navigation needs.

No matter which search engine or directory you use to search the web for your needs, these tips will help you to get better results in your efforts to search the web time efficiently and get imddediate results!

Lycos Europe, one of the dominating search giants of the 90s, is now up for auction. Unable to compete with Google's power, the search engine ran into net losses of EUR 5.9 million for the first quarter this year, according to PaidContent.

Dresdner Kleinwort is now Lycos’ advisor in its bid to find a new strategy - which should clearly start with trimming their fat. They don’t need to be so big to be competitive. Small and flexible teams are really successful today, because they can react quickly to the frequent changes in the Internet world - something that Lycos has not done.

However, this may be difficult for Lycos. There have already been a number of cost-cutting measures undertaken at Lycos Europe recently, eliminating around EUR 6.2 million. But there were still losses.

Good luck to whoever takes Lycos on...

There seems to be a lot in the news (or at least the news I read) that has something to do with the

There seems to be a lot in the news (or at least the news I read) that has something to do with the idea of communal viewing.

The most obvious example of this is everyone sitting around the TV in the living room. That image of the perfect American family lit by the warm glow of the one TV in the house is one that is burned into my own image bank.

Of course, today there is a screen everywhere and that means everyone can go watch whatever they want and screw family time. The explosion of cable and the niche shows that came along with it enforced this behavior making it even less likely that all members of a household could find a common show to hold their attention for an hour.

The success of American Idol is largely due to its ability to engage a wide demographic but it is very much an exception to the rule.

The growth of web video has only increased our tendancy to view alone (and not just porn).

In the wake of all this alone time a number of services are popping up to allow folks in different locations to watch videos on the web simultaneously while participating in chat of one kind or another.

This isn't entirely new as a number of TV shows have live chat rooms that run simultaneous to their airing but allowing groups to assemble on their on schedule for a similar experience is kind of neat.

I've already discussed the indie end of this spectrum with SeeToo and some of the larger efforts like NBC's Viewing Party. Now comes the Lycos effort with their revamp of LycosCinema.

According to ArsTech they've definitely put the spotlight on communal aspects of the site:

"Other significant new features in today's major revamp of Lycos Cinema focus on the social and chatting experiences. A new lobby chat area can accommodate thousands of movie fans if you aren't quite in the mood to start watching something yet. Movies can now be scheduled for a later date, complete with friend invites and notifications for when shows are about to start. Movies can be watched in private, with a select group of friends, or publicly (the default) by sharing a URL that any Lycos Cinema user can click to immediately join."

Seems pretty cool if IM'ing with friends while you watch a movie is something you really want to do. I'm not totally convinced that this is meeting a desperate need.

With SeeToo, the idea of watching personal videos with friends and family immediately struck a chord so maybe there is overlap. Time will tell.

In tangentially related Communal Viewing news, I like the idea of the upcoming Pangea Day (via PSFK)

"On May 10th, millions of people worldwide will watch the same short films at the same time. Via thousands of locally organized events, the organizers hope to remind watchers what we all have in common.

6 cities will broadcast live footage of 24 short films in 8 languages. Those in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro can check out the events’ headquarters. The estimated 4hr long cinematic debut will also include top speakers and musical performers: Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, Iranian rock phenom Hypernova and others."

Neato.
