Going Great Guns pt. 2

Previously, we looked at some of the medium machine guns in the US Army's service. Today we will focus on heavy machine guns. As a practical matter, the US Army has only had one, but we'll also look at a weapon that has complemented, but by no means replaced that gun.

Near the end of WWI, tanks were becoming common on the battlefield. Not surprisingly, anti-tank weapons began to appear soon after. Of course cannons were popular for engaging tanks, but they had a slow rate of fire, and poor fire control meant they often missed their targets. Coordinating the fires of these cannons with the infantry was difficult as well. Tanks of the day were designed with enough armor to turn rifle and machine gun bullets and shell fragments. Because they had little engine power to spare, armor was kept at a bare minimum. Accordingly, a heavier machine gun bullet could be counted on to penetrate them and would be a light enough weapon to accompany the infantry wherever it went. The high rate of fire would almost guarantee a hit on the tank, with a good likelyhood of destroying or disabling the vehicle. As an added bonus, the heavy machine gun would make an excellent anti-aircraft weapon, a need that was becoming clearer by the day. A heavy machine gun would have greater range than the light machine guns carried by airplanes and the heavier bullet would do correspondingly greater damage to a frail airplane.

Comes again John Moses Browning, a name that anyone with even a passing knowledge of American small-arms knows. Samuel Colt is better known to the public at large, but Browning arguably had a far greater impact. He scaled up his hugely successful M1919 machine gun from the .30-06 rifle cartridge to the .50 BMG cartridge (which he invented as well, specifically for the new gun) and produced the M-2 machine gun.

The aircooled M2 entered service in 1921. It was very quickly adopted to a variety of uses. In it's tripod mounted form shown above, it was in the weapons company of each infantry battalion. It was also used as a secondary weapon on tanks, an anti-aircraft weapon on trucks (normally one in four trucks would have a mount), mounted on ships and boats, used in either a fixed or flexible mount on aircraft, and later as the primary weapon on armored personnel carriers.

It has been an enormously successful weapon. How successful? It is still in production and is used by at least 34 nations. That number is almost certainly low, and it doesn't include some nations that we know used the weapon in the past. For instance, the Soviet Union received many guns as part of lend lease during WWII, mounted on trucks, tanks, PT boats, and airplanes. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the M2 is extremely well liked for its long range (up to 1800 meters, or over a mile) and its ability to penetrate masonry walls and cars. When you shoot someone with a .50cal, that tends to be that.

The M2 as seen above can be broken down for carrying into three main components- the barrel, the receiver, and the tripod. Mind you, each of these components is a pretty hefty load all by itself.

My own experience with the .50 dates from my time as a TC on M113s in Germany. I fired the weapon quite a few times on the range, and using blanks, many times on exercises. The .50 was mounted on a pintle attached to a cupola (like a very small turret) on the top of the M113. We had a tripod available if needed, and the barrels were stored in the track. The receiver itself was normally stored in the company arms room. When the time came to load up to roll out of the motor pool to go to the field, I would have to carry all my personal equipment, my rifle, my rucksack, and then I'd have to put the 84 pound receiver on the top of my rucksack and walk a half mile (uphill!) to the motorpool. That was pretty much the toughest thing about going to the field for me.

Still, firing the .50 was a great deal of fun, as it is pretty much the biggest gun in the inventory that you can shoot hands on.

The other heavy machine gun in the inventory is sorta a machine gun and sorta a grenade launcher. The MK19 was developed by the US Navy for use on patrol boats during the Vietnam War. It was further developed by the Army and entered service with the Army soon after that war.

The MK19 fires 40mm grenades at about 375 rounds per minute. It has a maximum effective range of 1500 meters against a small target. The most common 40mm grenade is the HEDP or High Explosive Dual Purpose. This grenade has a small HEAT warhead that can penetrate 2 inches of Rolled Homogeneous Armor and also fragments to kill or wound personnel within a 5 meter radius.

The MK19 is handy in that it gives infantry a means of defeating enemy light armor (and car bombs and trucks) and is an excellent weapon for suppressing enemy machine guns and snipers (would you stick your head up when someone is throwing 375 grenades a minute at you?), and can even penetrate masonry walls.

While the MK19 can be fired from a tripod, operationally it is almost always fired from a vehicle mount. The Army commonly mounts them on Humvees. Typically, the MK19 is found in the weapons company of infantry battalions, used in conjunction with Humvee mounted M2 .50cals. The Marines mount them on Humvees as well. It is also mounted on each Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicle coaxially with a .50 cal machine gun in a small cupola.

There have been several attempts to replace the M2 and MK19 in US service, often by combining their characteristics. To date, none of these attempts have been particularly successful. It looks like the .50cal/MK19 combo will soldier on for some time more.

UPDATE: Here's another attempt at replacing the M2 .50cal. We'll see. Read the comments for some of the concerns.

The microSDHC card will cost $100, with the M2 version of the same capacity costing $130. Not all cell phones can accept 16GB cards, so it is wise to check before purchasing additional storage. Among other things, this adds a new twist to the whole "iPhone vs. T-Mobile G1" debate. The iPhone still comes in 8GB and 16GB capacities. With its MicroSD slot and SanDisk's new card, the G1 can store 16GB, too.

Voilà une expression bien vaudoise qui convient parfaitement – à 100 mètres près – à l’état de la place de la Riponne hier un peu après minuit.

Pour la place du centre ville lausannois, c’était un peu la gueule de bois des lendemains de fête. Après quatre jours de fête du m2 et de Festival Label Suisse, la place qui accueille le marché se retrouve dans un triste état à quelques heures de celui de ce mercredi.

On y trouve, pêle-mêle, des structures métalliques de scène – plus ou moins bien rangées – des praticables, des vaubans de police, des sacs en plastique et des déchets divers, multiples et variés unis dans un capharnaüm peu habituel.

Certes, on ne peut pas faire des miracles en une petite journée de démontage, mais quand même, quand on veut que la fête soit belle, il faut que ses lendemains ne sentent pas trop la désolation. Juste histoire de ne laisser que de bons souvenirs.

Surtout quand le « chef d’orchestre de la manifestation », Daniel Rosselat, est un expert en matière d’organisation de festivals. Surtout pour un candidat à un poste de municipal à Nyon. Surtout qu’en cas d’élection, il risque de devoir faire appliquer les règlements pointilleux de la police du commerce de son administration. À plus forte raison s’il se retrouve syndic des Nyonnais.

Mais, peut-être que dans l’euphorie festive et métropolitaine on a oublié de lui montrer le petit panneau accroché juste au-dessus de cette place qu’il ne faut pas confondre avec un lieu d’aisance : « merci de laisser cette place dans le même état que vous l’avez trouvée en arrivant. »

COMETA EVO2 6.0 M2 DE RADSAILS

Tenía ganas de comprarme una cometa d-power y casi que estaba decidido a ahorrar para agenciarme una de Ozone (porque para una cometa de este fabricante hace falta ahorrar). Casi había descartado las de los asturianos de Radsails, que de hecho mi cometa de 3.0 m2 es de ellos, ya que sus cometas d-power del año pasado no tienen muy buena prensa en los foros de internet. Pero como este verano fuimos a Asturias y nos plantamos en la Feria de Muestras de Gijón, donde estaban los de Eolo (nombre del grupo que hace las cometas Radsails, entre otras muchas cosas), pasamos por allí y preguntamos por la Evo 2 (en principio con mejoras respecto al modelo del 2007) y entre que el chico que nos atendió era muy majo y que era la unica ocasión de comprar directamente a los fabricantes, con el aliciente que hacían un jugoso descuento.... me lié, me liaron y me compré la Evo 2 de 6.0 m2.

Desde entonces, la he sacado tres veces: una en Sant Pere Pescador y dos en EmpuriaBrava. La de Sant Pera y una de EmpuriaBrava no con demasiado viento y la otra con tramontana con rachas de 100 km/h....

Conclusiones, lo de la tramontana fuerte primera y última vez: Buena ocasión para comprobar los sistemas de seguridad, que pude verificar que funcionan bien y me salvaron la vida. Antes de esto, puede observar que tiene un tirón vertical con una sustentación que yo no conocía.

Con viento suave, hay que vigilar mucho para que no se te pliegue cuando vas con el mountain, pero creo que el problema es que para utilizarla se necesita un poquito más de viento. Pienso que en estas condiciones es mejor que saque la de 3.0 m2 con mandos, ya que es mucho más fácil "remar" sin que se te pliegue, tarea que me parece bastante complicada con la barra de d-power (también con la cross-over que utilizo a veces con la de 3.0 m2). Habrá que esperar a un día que ni sea la bestialidad de la tramontana fuerte ni la marinada de los otros dos días.

De la distinction

Le dictionnaire de l’Académie française accepte plusieurs significations pour le mot «distinction». Dans sa cinquième acception, l’ouvrage de référence mentionne «Élégance et dignité des manières.»

C’est exactement ce à quoi on serait en droit de s’attendre de la part de la police et du directeur d’icelle un jour de fête comme le fut celui de l’inauguration du m2. Les autres jours aussi d’ailleurs …

C’est exactement ce à quoi n’a pas eu droit la jeune femme qui, sur la place de la Riponne, distribuait, avec élégance et dignité, en plus du sourire, un tiré à part du supplément de La Distinction n°124 du 18 septembre dernier. Un opuscule titré Lausanne en construction et sous-titré Inauguration du métro moscouchy, le plus moderne du monde dans la ville la plus démocratique de l’univers – Cérémonies du jeudi 18 septembre 2008.

La distributrice du fascicule satirique, mais distingué et digne, s’est fait alpaguer, en plein pendant les festivités d’inauguration du moscouchy m2, par un pandore parce qu’elle procédait à sa distribution sans autorisation. La vilaine !

Pendant que la ville est mise sens dessus dessous par l’inauguration du m2, par le Comptoir Suisse, par la Coupe Davis, par le Festival Label Suisse, il y a un policier qui a trouvé le temps de détecter la malheureuse distributrice de la brochure à l’ironie distinguée, de la faire cesser d’agir, de vérifier son identité et de la dénoncer à l’autorité compétente.

Décidément, la police de Lausanne a bien fait de limiter les congés au maximum pour laisser à l’un de ses perdreaux le temps et les moyens de sévir à l’endroit de cette dangereuse femme distillatrice d’imprimés subversifs. Il fallait bien ça.

Il faut dire qu’elle l’a bien cherché la distributrice de brochure appelant à la mutinerie, voire à la révolution. Franchement, se permettre de dispenser sans autorisation un pamphlet dans lequel le syndic de la plus petite ville équipée d’un métro automatique et son chef de la police sont honteusement et respectivement dénommés l’Immense Syndic du Peuple et le Maréchal des Logis de Police mérite une punition exemplaire !

Et c’est bien ce qui attend la petite déviante qui, comme le confirmait hier le chef de la police dans Le Courrier, sera automatiquement dénoncée à l’autorité compétente. Une époustouflante preuve qu'il n’y a pas que le m2 qui soit automatique.

Distributeurs de journaux satiriques gratuits et sans pub, méfiez-vous : l’autodafé n’est pas loin, même si vos écrits sont élégants et dignes dans la manière comme sur le fond !

Pour terminer ce billet, je rappellerai à qui se sentira concerné que le Code de déontologie de la police de Lausanne prévoit dans son chapitre IV que «le policier fait usage des pouvoirs qui lui sont conférés par la loi de manière opportune et adaptée aux circonstances».

Un tramway nommé désir

Lausanne résonne des discours et des flonflons de l’inauguration du m2. Pendant ce temps, le débat sur la façon de relier le plateau de la Blécherette à la place de l’Europe stagne.

En fait, deux visions s’affrontent. A ma gauche (?) : la Municipalité de Lausanne, dont le désir est un tramway souterrain passant par Beaulieu. A ma droite, les autres, dont probablement le Conseil d’Etat, pour qui la solution réside dans un tram de surface passant par Saint-Martin et la Borde.

Cette variante est d’ailleurs celle qui se dégage nettement du volumineux rapport de l’ingénieur Roland Ribi, le papa un peu oublié, voire maltraité, du m2. Un rapport rédigé à l’intention des autorités de l’agglomération et du Conseil d’Etat qui précise clairement que «le passage par Beaulieu n'apporte pas de véritable gain d'efficacité mais impose un tracé souterrain sensiblement plus onéreux …» et qui ajoute un peu plus loin «Ce sont principalement des considérations portant sur des questions d'image […] qui pourraient être formulées en faveur d'une desserte de Beaulieu […]»

Un mot important est lâché dans ce rapport technique : image. Il en va de l’image du Centre de congrès et d'exposition de Beaulieu qui nécessitera bientôt la bagatelle de 100 millions pour un lifting lui permettant d’affronter le futur centre de congrès de l’EPFL. Un centre qui péclote, dont les produits d’exploitation stagnent depuis 2002 et qui est sur le point de s’associer avec la Messe Basel pour sortir de la gonfle. Mais, surtout, un centre qui n’a pas besoin d’un tram souterrain pour véhiculer ses visiteurs. Sauf … pour l’image.

Une image de tramway que les habitants de Saint-Martin, de la Borde et de Bellevaux, qui eux en ont besoin, pourront toujours se repasser le soir en s’endormant.

Wah, wah... lama juga ya tidak posting di blog. Aku disibukkan dengan kegiatan sehari-hariku. Apalagi ini bulan puasa (emang ngaruh ya? haha). Minggu kemarin tentu saja aku punya kesibukan yang sangat menentukan masa depanku (lebay!) yaitu, mid smester!! Satu minggu penuh aku tidak buka FS atau pun chatting. Selain itu, aku juga sibuk dengan ambisi mendownload video. Karena... di rumahku pasang Fastnet!! hiyaaaah senangnya... Akhirnya aku tidak perlu ke warnet lagi. Tapi tetap saja di rumahku ada tarifnya untuk pakai internet per jam Rp. 3000. Sebenarnya bagus sih, cuma aku agak tidak percaya dengan kakak-kakakku. Bayangkan, pakai telkomnet aja sering tidak bayar, jadi aku meragukan mereka.

Oh iya, minggu kemarin aku di kejutkan dengan kabar yang sulit di percaya. Memory stick M2 2GB untuk handphone tersayangku, w910i... RUSAK!! huwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Tapi karena waktu itu sedang puasa aku beruaha untuk tidak menangis.Ini semua gara-gara theme Tegoshi - Hoshi wo Mezashite yang aku buat. Karena front display-nya yang GIF itu sangat memberatkan RAM sonyericsson, kata kakakku. Sekarang aku sudah beli memory stick lagi, tapi kali ini 1GB. Yasudahlah, aku janji tidak akan bikin theme aneh-aneh lagi... Kalaupun nanti kangen sama theme Tegoshi akan kubuat formatnya tidak GIF dan tanpa ringtone juga tentunya.

Si os pregunto, ¿que es más barato un piso que vale 100.000 euros, o uno que vale 150.000 euros?

Evidentemente, el de 100.000 euros es el más barato. Pues, esta afirmación no es del todo cierta.

Visito un piso, 100.000 euros, 40 m2, con plaza de garaje y trastero, centro ciudad (Villagarcía de Arosa, Pontevedra). Cerca del mar.

Visito otro piso, 150.000 euros, 85m2, con plaza de garaje y trastero, centro ciudad (Villagarcía de Arosa, Pontevedra). Cerca del mar.

Los dos están más o menos en iguales condiciones, se venden en segunda mano. Vacíos, sin muebles. Edificios de 5 años de antigüedad y ninguno es VPO.

Si echamos cuentas el piso de 100.000 euros por 40 m2, sale el m2 a 2.500 euros.

El piso de 150.000 euros por 85 m2, sale el m2 a 1.765 euros.

¿Cuál es ahora más barato? Bueno, dependiendo de como se mire el de 100.000 euros sigue siendo más barato.

¿Por que casi siempre, los pisos más pequeños resultan más caros?

Windows Live Messenger 9 Beta M2 Hands On Test Drive

The latest installment of my Hands On Test Drive series features Microsoft Live Messenger 9.0.14.0.3921.717 M2 (beta build). This beta version was released to beta testers last week from Microsoft Connect Program, and I got my copy from a friend. I instantly installed it on my system, but had problems signing in. So I switched back to version 8.5. Well I decided to give it another try today and, thankfully, it worked.

Microsoft have taken a bold step transforming the UI to Windows Presentation Foundation, resembling the Wave 3, and it looks good. They trade off here is that it takes too much memory (about 75 MB) in Windows XP. Nevertheless, the UI is smooth and responsive compared to the previous versions or any other WPF application for that matter.

User Interface

You will have to remove the previous versions to install this one, and once started, it will present you with a slightly modified welcome screen. The change here is the addition of a few links that point to the beta program. You will get a message notifying you that "the login process might take longer than usual". This is very much accurate, infact it takes about 5 times longer than Live Messenger 8.5. I also had problems logging in first, but that issue appears to be resolved now.

Once logged in, you will see the good ol' Live Messenger 8.5 interface drawn on what appears to be WPF. There are a minor tweaks here as well, like the addition of the Favorites group, where you can Copy your favorite contacts, and they would appear as thumbnails. I don't have tabs enabled for my account so I don't know how they are drawn (I'll appreciate if any reader can comment about that). You can change your display picture to an animated one, and the newest and the coolest feature is Signature Sounds (more below). Right clicking on the contacts exposes some new features, like personalized contact sounds.

The messenger window is totally redesigned with a brand new UI, strongly suggesting that it is indeed done with WPF. For a casual user of the previous version, the UI may be daunting is it departs from the right-handed pane style. The display picture pane is now on the left side, and the emoticon/wink toolbar below the textbox. You also get annoying little dots on every new line of the messages. For some reason, the messenger always displays webcam option even if no webcam is present. A few new emoticons have been added as well as some animated display pictures.

Features

There are a bundle of new features introduced with this iteration of the messenger. Most notably, Microsoft go the GTalk way, and offer a Messenger API for the first time. This will allow other services to interact with the messenger, and also adding the possibility of plugins. Another big feature (not in this build though) is the ability to hold an Audio/Video conference (a bit like NetMeeting) but now it appears it will debut in version 10.

Microsoft are also working on extending thier reach, and include AIM, XMPP, and ICQ compatibility, much like version 8, which introduced Yahoo! Chat. This is the first version of the messenger that supports what Microsoft calls Multiple Point of Presence; it allows you to simultaneously sign into the Windows Live Service from various machines. A built in spam filter called Anti-SPIM, which blocks all spammers, a good step towards security.

The most attractive features however, to me are Animated Display Pictures, and Signature Sounds. WLM9 supports animated GIF images to be set as display pictures. The quality is limited to 256 colors, and its a huge compromise on memory. On the other hand, the ability to set Signature Sound, a sound that your contacts hear when you sign in is great.

It works like this. First you select a sound file (WMA, MP3 or WAV), and the built-in editor will allow you to make a 5 sec clip of that sound. It supports simple Fade In and Fade Out effects, and presents a wave for like most sound editors. Once you select the sound, it uploads it to the Live Servers, and transfers to all your contacts. This process has bugs (discussed below) however, and should be used with caution.

You can also customize the messenger sounds for every contact, which includes new message and sign-in sound (overrides his Signature Sound). You can now also post click-able URLs into your status messages. There are other minor features present which would need a lot of time explaining so its best to try that out yourself, if you have got the beta version.

Bugs

The most prominent bug in the messenger I discovered so far is its sync problem. This ranges from login to chats, causing a lot of pain. You may be prevented to login, and sometimes, messages aren't delivered on time. A few of my friends also reported that the emoticons disappear sometimes, and a similar issue occurs with sounds. Since this is still in development stages, bugs would occur, but they are expected to be fixed in future revisions.

Conclusion

The newest version of the messenger looks like a very bold move forward. The ability to access the API and SPIM protection are great new features, as well as the interoperability with other IM products. Scheduled to be released with the Windows Live Services Wave 3, for Windows Vista, Windows XP and the Mac OSX, you can expect to get hands on this little toy in Q4 2008, or early 2009.

Der kommer et tidspunkt hvor man har lyst til at tatovere visse ting på sin arm. At skrive m² er en betegnelse jeg sikkert har skrevet flere gange end mit eget navn, og alligevel glemmer jeg altid, at et m efterfulgt af Alt+ 0178 giver m². (kubikmeter er Alt+0179)
