So I had to goose that energy and tell you guys that The Hood Internet, also Chicagoans, have just dropped their most recent mix tape entitled The Hood Internet vs. Chicago which includes--as you might expect-- Chicago artists. Highlights include R. Kelly, The Cool Kids, Kid Sister, Mahjongg, The Chicago Bears, Kanye West, Smashing Pumpkins, etc! I just have to say I've been waiting for a Mahjongg mashup for a long time as well as another Kellz jam. It's been way too long since The Hood has made one of those. I mean currently it's the town where you will both see Alison and I, so... basically Chicago Rocks! WOOOOO! Check you guys on the flip side.

FreeKY Fest was last Saturday and Lexington's WRFL 88.1 celebrated 20 years in broadcasting in style bringing a long line-up of amazing artists including The Apples in Stereo, The Coup, and Mahjongg to Lexington. The festival took place atop of the Transit Center which was basically a split level, elevated parking lot situated amongst the towers downtown. The weather was beautiful and a large crowd showed up to enjoy the tunes, art and exhibits the FreeKY Fest had to offer (all 12 hours of it!).

Early in the afternoon there were activities for the young (and the young at heart) which included Louisville's own Snow Monster!, Robert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine (the alter ego of Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo), middle school breakdancers and more...

The fest really got rolling when Mahjongg, out of Chicago, hit the stage around 5:30. Of all bands playing at the fest, I was most excited about this one. They have a sound all of their own, blending rock and dance music with layered electronic beats and a personal touch of out-of-the-ordinary. It is surprising how listenable the album is considering how much is going on. They recently signed with K Records (an amazing label) and have a new album out, Kontpab, released earlier this year. I highly recommend catching this band next time you have a chance (or at the very least, grabbing their album).

The Coup took the stage next and kept the energy going strong. I saw Boots Riley sing a lot of The Coup's songs at his show with Galactic at Headliner's last week and this show had just as much energy and emotion, despite the fact that the band was going on zero hours sleep in the last two days (flying in from Oakland that morning). That said, Boots had some trouble remembering some lyrics, but it was laughed off (and understandable). They regrouped and broke into "Ghetto Manifesto" to the tune of OutKast's "So Fresh, So Clean" to finish off the show (you can see the video below). At the end of the video you can hear Boots thank Hair Police drummer Trevor Tremaine who had to fill in at the last second because of some issues with their regular drummer. Before the set Trevor was given a quick lesson on their beats as he practiced the rhythm on his stomach. Someone in the crowd yelled "full time job" at one point because he filled the void beautifully. The Coup will be at Bonaroo in June, then Boots heads to Europe with Galactic.

The night ended with The Apples in Stereo. These guys are based in Denver, but have KY ties. Lead vocalist/guitarist Robert Schneider has an unmistakable and infectious presence (like I said before, he is also Robert Bobbert). Their 90's pop rock sound is impossible not to like and they update it with a little electro synth. It is the perfect driving music and was a great way to send the crowd home with more energy than they came with (even after a day of sun and fun). Check out their newest release, Electronic Projects for Musicians, a collection of b-sides and rarities out this month.

Here is hoping there will be another FreeKY Fest next year!!

Can I get a what what?! Not only has Mahjongg managed to put out my favorite release of 2008 thus far, brought the house down during their performance at Camp Concentration in March, but they have granted my wish of playing the Pitchfork Music Festival in July. The year is only bound to become sweeter for these Chicago Illionaires (some members by way of good old Missouri), and I couldn't be happier. Naturally, I would like to share my love and appreciation for these tribal/electro/experimental gents, so give these remixes of "Tell The Police The Truth" a listen. The first was remixed by Brenmar, the drummer from tiiight Brooklyn band These Are Powers. The second is from Chicago-based electro outfit Clique Talk.

Also, check out Mahjongg performing "The Stubborn Horse" off of their Raydoncong EP on Chic-A-Go-Go to get a glimpse of what you might expect at Pitchfork:

I said goddamn! This ain't your grandmother's ancient Chinese solitaire! Chicago, IL (by way of Columbia, MO) based Mahjongg's sophomore release on K Records, Kontpab, transcends genre specifics and cuts straight to the magic. Blurring the line between tribal-influenced, Battles-esque polyrhythms and downright dance-punk, Kontpab combines heavy percussive blasts and jittery guitars with scathing-hot synths to produce 42.4 minutes of organized chaos. We should have seen it coming. I mean, the album art on the back-cover is a Magic Eye, for Pete's sake.

The first song off of the album, "Pontiac", guides the listener through two minutes of head-bopping build-up until it finally erupts into an all-out dance party. It successfully serves as the introduction to the complex and amusing entities that are their other eight tracks.

The rest of the album is a layered mess of sorts, but it works. It will make you want to dance and stomp and shimmy your brains out. We think the chorus of "These Birds Are Bats" is slightly reminiscent of the famous "Downtown" by Petula Clark, but hey, who's pointing fingers?

Standout Trackz: "Tell The Police The Truth", "Problems", "Wipe Out", "Rise Rice".

Once in awhile, we here at BTR like to highlight a rad independent label. This month, we've got Olympia, Washington's K Records on the site. They started back in '82, and have been releasing some of the best music in the Northwest U.S. (and anywhere else, for that matter.)

We're showcasing music new and old, so we've got new tracks from Mahjongg, Tender Forever, and Old Time Relijun- plus some all-time faves like Beat Happening, Modest Mouse, and The Blow. We've also provided some tour dates in the playlist to make sure you get away from your computer and into the pit!

Note: Detholz! will perform at 8 pm this Sunday, Sept. 23rd, at an all-ages FREE show at the Art Institute of Chicago. More info here: http://lemondrop.freeradiosaic.org

Welcome to Episode IX of the Detholz! Mp3 Blog! I apologize this comes a day late-- believe me, this is an "excused tardy." You would not believe the week I've had.

A change of pace today, ladies and germs, in our most recent installment: "Children of the Night," a kinder, gentler, somewhat autumnal number.

This is not intended for any band, nor did I write it for anyone else in mind (other than the person the song's about). It's not meant to be played live, no flashing lights, no bells and whistles-- just a plain old song.

I. SONG CONCEPT

So this is a love song. Will wonders never cease?

I'm turning over a new leaf! Sort of. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a vampire to his beloved.

I've been going through a real vampire kick recently. My recent obsession started with a breeze-thru of the painfully campy "Salem's Lot," continued with a flying leap into the depths of the Hammer Horror film catalogue (Dracula AD 1972 is a must-see!), and is presently manifesting itself as an addiction to a (gulp) vampire game. I know, I know. To quote Babyboomerangutang from "The Tick": "It's okay to play with dolls!" Right?

I heard a screenwriter on the radio recently suggest that the horror genre generally appeals to a younger demographic. I have found the opposite to be true. The older I get, the more I am drawn to films and books stacked in the "horror" racks at Blockbuster/Barnes and Noble. Perhaps this reflects my weak grasp of maturity and/or problems with functional adulthood-- of those things there's little doubt-- but I'd also like to think it's reflective of some semblance of imagination. A good scare is a healthy thing now and then, right?

Feh, enough disclaimers. On with the show:

A vampire is a damned creature-- a child of the biblical Cain, cursed to walk the earth for eternity, feeding on the blood of others to survive. I tied in this idea with the concept of the Fall -- not the current season, but the "Fall of Man" in Genesis 3. According to Christian theology, we inhabit "bodies of Death," marred by the Fall of Creation in Genesis 3, cursed by God along with Adam and Eve. Though we still have fellowship with one another, we were separated from God in the Garden of Eden and remain so. Ultimately, our bodies-- along with all Creation-- will be redeemed by Christ. Redemption is a central tenet of Christian theology, and subsequently of American culture.

I liked the image of the vampire walking in the darkness with his beloved, living an "unlife" together marked with the all of the trappings of their shared Curse-- but the Curse has no real power over them. They will eventually be redeemed. They are, therefore, simultaneously children of the moon, children of sleep and-- because of their coming redemption-- children of God.

...

Well, it made sense to me at the time.

II. MUSICAL CONCEPTS

Obviously this is a very different kind of song than others I've posted-- an honest-to-goodness foray out of my comfort zone.

I purposely limited the vocals to one or two takes, leaving all of the warbles and warts intact. I think this lends an element of intimacy/sincerity to the vocal delivery, and helps create the "rickety" atmosphere I was aiming for here.

The first element of the song was the guitar part, which was sloppily played through a crappy reverb. The chorus melody is introduced is introduced immediately, and provided the foundation for the entire song's arrangement. In the verses, the guitar part is static, sitting on a G. The organ moves the harmony along, moving around the tonal center, sometimes outside of it. The harmonic changes were put in place before the vocal melody, which is an old Detholz! trick. I hadn't written a song this way in a long time, and it felt good to be back in the old, threadbare cap'm's chair.

I wrestled with whether or not to bother with percussion, since this is such a subdued track. After laying down a bass line, though, it sort of screamed for one. I borrowed a few tricks from one of Bobby Conn's drummers, Josh from Chicago band, Mahjongg, and definitely had him in mind when constructing the part. Quick, precise and jittery.

The piece de resistance for me is the backward guitar solo-- not an especially original trick, but in this context it injects a pinch of creepiness, which is a must for this song.

When left to my own devices, as a "solo songwriter" that is, I usually churn out material like this. "Haunted Soft Rock?" "Eerie Relax Rock?" "Uneasy Listening?" I don't know what to call it. I'm not even sure if I can name specific influences.

Maybe you can discern a few? Let me know.

Thanks, as always, for tuning in! See you next week. And I promise to be prompt.

III. LYRICS

CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT

When the town's asleep
We've a vow to keep
Since the world began

Since the world began
Adam walks with Eve
And Cain walks with all of his
Inside their shadow'd bones
Alone and not alone

Is it dark enough
Under the moon above?
We are her children, love.

There is a light of love
Inside the Eye above
We are His children, love.

He has promised you
An eternal youth
Since the world began

Since the world began
I have walked with thee
And you walked with me
Through our darker dreams
Alone and not alone

Awake at night
You shake with terror

Let us fall asleep together

We are her children, love.
We are His children, love.
