“Phnom Penh: Domestic violence remains a major issue in Khmer society - prevention and solutions are need immediately. Domestic violence becomes more cruel, serious, and alarming, especially during the first six months of 2008 this happened; and this trend has increased continually form year to year.

“Officials of different organizations working on domestic violence reported to Khmer Sthapana on 24 July 2008 that, during the period of the first six months of 2008, domestic violence increased alarmingly, and it is believed to be result of a decline of social morality, of inefficient education, and of the poor implementation of regulations.

“Recently, a son killed his father by using a sickle to cut his throat on 22 July 2008 in Khvet Thom, Prey Chhor, Kompong Cham. In another case, in Koh Roka Village, Koh Roka Commune, Peam Chor, Prey Veng, on 22 July 2008, a husband cut his wife’s throat with a cleaver making her bleeding all over the body because of an argument etc…

“According to a report by the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association – ADHOC- domestic violence increased in 2007. In 2006, the organization received 532 case reports, but in 2007, there were 632 cases which led to 29 deaths. This increase is a signal of inefficient law enforcement, aiming at the prevention and the protection of victims from domestic violence.

“In 2007, there were 603 cases of domestic violence that led to injuries. Such violence causing injuries resulted from drunkenness, jealousy, from asserting power as the head of the family, having extra-marital relations, gambling, poverty, and the lack of education, sexual violence, etc…

“Looking at activities which lead to violence, offenders always find reasons to create arguments - after returning home from going to places of entertainment, or when they cannot get the money they ask for; they may start to destroy everything in their house, or use insults and rude words. After that, they hit the victims with sticks, sickles, cleavers, axes, or hoes, or by kicking. Sometimes, violence leads to disability or to death of their victims.

“This report continued to explain that because of strict traditions, some victims bear to live with offenders for years without any intervention by local authorities which might have led to solutions, until they lose their lives. Obviously, in 2007, deaths by domestic violence still increased, and this was not different from 2006.

“There were deaths because victims had been suffered many injuries. They had informed the local authorities to help to solve problems, but they get no response, because the authorities still consider domestic violence to be a domestic problem of a family, and they think they should not interfere to solve such problems.

“Also, it is often seen that the authorities are slow to intervene in domestic violence, and the keep things unattended unless somebody is injured or a victim is already dead before they go to investigate. This shows that regulations to stop domestic violence and to protect victims are not implemented efficiently.

“The authorities seem not to known the regulations that allow them to intervene and to prevent arguments in time at the initial stage, in order to avoid an escalation to domestic violence.

“It should be stressed that laws to stop domestic violence and to protect victims were approved by the National Assembly, and put into force on 24 October 2005. Though those laws became valid, they seem to be inefficient and not enforced at all, even though these laws allow the authorities, officials of the Ministry of Women's Affairs, and neighbors of a victim to intervene at a site of dispute, to prevent domestic violence without asking for a warrant from the courts, and the authorities closest by have the duty to intervene immediately in cases of domestic violence happening to start, in order to protect the victim. The authorities do not use these laws to solve domestic violence. Generally, institutions involved use the new criminal procedures to deal with domestic violence, which is against Article 8 of the new code of criminal procedures.” Khmer Sthapana, Vol.1, #59, 26.7.2008

In the streets, it is getting hot and the street families are searching for food, clothes and shelter. Street families are those people who live in the streets and don't have a home to live. It was on a chilly Friday morning when I walked around the streets of Nairobi and met some street families who explained to some of the problems and challenges they face in the streets.

First I met Caroline Wanjiku with some of her friends who told me about some of the major problems and challenges they face. They told me first about the background of their lives, that they were born in the streets and grew up in the streets and that they do not know any other home except the street. They explained to me that the major problem they face is hunger and starvation which leads to the death of their young children sometimes.

Clothes and shelter is also a major problem they face. Lack of shelter leads to the death of their young children because they do not have heavy clothes to protect them. This is because they sleep outside near the river of Nairobi where there is stagnant water and mosquitoes, which easily spread malaria especially during the rainy season.

They also lack clean water and food. They collect from dust bin litters resulting in the outbreak of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. These diseases are hard to cure due to lack of money to take their children to the hospital. HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are also increasing which comes as a result of being raped by strangers and sometimes their own enemies. Finally they told me that it is the work and responsibility of the Government to take action and provide for them a better place to live so that they can have a bright future.

Alcune fonti riferiscono che la malattia è stata contratta solo una settimana prima del decesso, nel campo di addestramento militare di Wi'a, a 20 miglia dal porto di Massawa.

Fortemente indebolita a causa delle torture, non ha ricevuto alcun trattamento sanitario. Infatti i cristiani in carcere raramente possono usufruire di cure mediche, nel caso di Simon, le autorità le hanno rifiutate.

Simon frequentava la chiesa Kale-Hiwet di Assab, una delle chiese evangeliche indipendenti nel mirino del regime autoritario eritreo.I cristiani detenuti sono continuamente sotto pressione affinché abiurino la loro fede.L' 8 giugno scorso, l’agenzia Compass, è venuta a conoscenza del ricovero urgente di otto cristiani, provocato dalle torture inflitte loro dai militari nella prigione di Adi-Quala.

Con la morte di Simon, sono in totale cinque i cristiani eritrei morti e seguito delle torture per essersi rifiutati di ritrattare la loro fede.

Simon era la sorella del noto giornalista televisivo Biniam Simon, che recentemente è dovuto fuggire dal paese, dopo aver rinunciato alla carriera nella ERI-TV, la emittente controllata dal governo.

La situazione molto difficile per i cristiani in Eritrea, va avanti così dal 2002, da quando cioè il governo del presidente Afewerki ha autorizzato a svolgere le funzioni religiose solo i membri delle chiese ortodosse, cattoliche e luterane, e ai musulmani.

Ever since 9/11, the top priority for the United States, and much of the world, has been putting an end to terrorism - an idea. Ignoring the obvious fact that you can never eradicate terrorism - an idea - completely, a worldwide war has been launched against it. This war has costed the United States alone over 700 billion dollars between Iraq and Afganistan, and has claimed the lives of 4,124 American soldiers at this point in time. Further, our estimated wounded is between 20,000 and 100,000, with the official number being 30, 435.

In the historical view, that isn't a terrying number of casualties. However, 1,245,000 estimated iraqi deaths is, and that's just the number we know of. I doubt we have made a huge effort to go and count them all, personally. This number is higher than that in the Rwandan genocide and doesn't even include the numbers from the Afganistan war.

The perceived threat of terrorism has been the underlying justification for both the Afganistan and Iraq wars, and was a crucial factor for rallying support for George W. Bush's '04 campaign. But just how overplayed was this threat?

In WWII, Hitler's regime and allies were considered a direct threat to the stability of the entire globe. Millions died from the outset, and even then the United States was reluctant to commit itself militarily. In the Cold War, the Soviets and the United States both held the power to destroy eachother, and much of the world, with the push of a few buttons. In comparison, a few bearded guys in a backwards land don't seem as much of a threat.

While a terrorist attack in America might kill a few people, it wouldn't directly damage the country as a whole in any significant way. Infact, the number of people worldwide who die yearly due to terrorism is only a few hundred. Lightning strikes, accidents caused by deer, allergic reactions to peanuts, and the number of U.S. citizens that drown each year in bathtubs claim more lives than global terrorism does. Or how about the pollution in California, which kills an estimated (and ever increasing) 24,000 a year.

Then there's the worry over a chemical or biological attack. However, to this point deaths from terrorist biological attacks have been almost nonexistant. The well funded chemical attack in Tokyo in 1995 only managed to kill 12 people. And if it is so easy to pull off one of these attacks, how come the more-vulnerable Israel has never been the target of one?

No, the real damage from terrorism comes from the measures taken to prevent it. New airline security measures cost the economy billions every year. Law enforcement agencies spend large sums on learning new techniques for dealing with unlikely situations and on buying surveillance equipment. The war itself, launched as a preventative measure, has already costed the country a pre-stated amount rising all the time. And yet by drawing all of this attention to the problem, it isn't certain whether we have had any affect. Infact, some fear that we have aided the recruiting of groups such as Al Quaeda by angering and displacing so many people, making them stronger than ever as a movement. But the largest costs may be unquantifiable: The invasion of personal rights by the U.S. government in the name of homeland security (PATRIOT Act, for example), the overplayed fear instilled in Americans mostly by their own government and media, and even racism towards those of arab descent.

The point is, the chances of a terrorist attack occuring are extremely small. However, they are there, and there is very little you can do to change them. How much are you willing to give up in terms of quality of life, money, and American and coalition lives for actions that may be reassuring initially but in reality do almost nothing?

Or possibly an even more important question, how many lives could have been saved by spending this money on services like a stronger public health system or on fighting malaria, which claims between 1.5 and 2.7 million deaths per year?

África: Clinton em digressão para anúncio de novos programas contra o paludismo

O antigo presidente americano Bill Clinton anunciou Terça-feira que vai iniciar no fim deste mês uma digressão que o levará à alguns paises de África e ao México destinada a dar a conhecer os novos programas da sua Fundação contra o sida e o paludismo.

"Este ano, entusiasmei-me pelo desenvolvimento de projectos que marcarão uma diferença enorme na luta contra a epidemia do sida , o melhoramento das condições de vida das pessoas e do seu futuro", disse Clinton.

A sua digressão, que deve iniciar na próxima terça-feira, passará pela Etiópia, Rwanda, Libéria e o Senegal, onde o antigo presidente se encontrará com os responsáveis locais e membros da Fundação que leva o seu nome.

Antes de regressar aos Estados Unidos, Bill Clinton desloca-se ao México, onde participará na décima sétima (17) Conferência mundial sobre o sida que se realiza de 3 à 8 de Agosto próximo naquele país.

A Fundação Clinton lançou em 2002 um programa de luta contra o sida. Ainda este chegou a acordo com vários laboratórios farmacêuticos para baixar em 30% o preço dos principais medicamentos contra o paludismo, os ACT (Associações terapêuticas à base de artemisina) .

Fórum. Combate à tuberculose, sida e malária é prioridade de reunião paralela à cimeira da CPLP

Participam membros de ONG, universidades e centros de investigação

A tuberculose ainda é um problema de saúde em Portugal, com três mil novos casos diagnosticados todos os anos. Mas esta doença infecciosa, e a sida e malária são flagelos nos restantes países da Comunidade de Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP). As três doenças, e a actuação conjunta necessária ao seu combate, estarão por isso, hoje, em discussão no Primeiro Fórum para as Questões da Saúde da Sociedade Civil dos países de língua portuguesa, que decorre paralelamente aos trabalhos da VII Cimeira de chefes de Estado e de Governo da CPLP.

A realização do fórum, no Centro Cultural de Belém, é uma iniciativa do ex-presidente da República Jorge Sampaio, actual Enviado Especial da ONU para a Luta Contra a Tuberculose e também Embaixador da Boa Vontade da CPLP para as questões da Saúde.

Criar uma "plataforma de diálogo entre os governos e as organizações da sociedade civil dos membros da CPLP" para as questões da saúde, como é o combate à sida, malária e tuberculose, entre outras doenças infecciosas, é o objectivo central deste primeiro encontro para a saúde.

"É fundamental a criação de uma rede sólida e funcional de representantes das organizações da sociedade civil que possa actuar de forma coordenada junto dos governos e da CPLP, gerar sinergias e conjugar esforços e recursos com vista a obter progressos no domínio da saúde pública", explica Jorge Sampaio, sublinhando que "só através do reforço da cooperação no espaço da CPLP e de uma melhor inserção multilateral da própria CPLP" será possível "a melhoria da saúde pública e a erradicação das grandes pandemias".

Para concretizar estas metas, o primeiro fórum da saúde estabelece desde já quatro objectivos, que passam pela criação de uma rede da sociedade civil no espaço da CPLP, com representantes em cada um dos países membros, a criação de um comité para acompanhar as políticas da saúde nos países de língua portuguesa e a promoção da mobilização conjunta de recursos para a melhoria da saúde pública no mesmo espaço, entre outros.

No fórum, participam representantes da sociedade civil de todos os países da CPLP - Moçambique, Angola, São Tomé e Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Brasil, Timor e Portugal -, vocacionados para a área da saúde pública, pertencentes a organizações não governamentais (ONG), grupos activistas, fundações, institutos de investigação e universidades, entre outros.

Convidados a participar foram também representantes dos governos da CPLP, da União Africana, Organização Mundial, Fundo Global para Sida, Malária e Tuberculose, e ONUSIDA.

Novos casos todos os anos

As doenças infecciosas, com destaque para as três que estão hoje em foco no encontro paralelo à cimeira de chefes de Estado e de governo dos países de língua portuguesa, matam actualmente milhões de pessoas no próprio espaço da CPLP.

Jag och ett gäng glada ska till sydafrika om ett år, vi ska vara där ett tag och det är en ganska så dyr resa så det är en del att spara och fixa innan resan. Måste ha en reseförsäkring, för det handlar ju om så stora pengar och sen så måste man vaccinera sig mot malaria och sånt. Vi har pratat och fixat så mycket med den här resan redan nu så det känns så verkligt. Det är lite jobbigt att det inte är för en om ett år, jag vet inte hur jag ska kunna orka vänta så länge.

Der Bremer Stürmer Boubacar Sanogo infizierte sich offenbar laut diversen Medienberichten während seines Heimat-Urlaubes mit Malaria. Erst in Bremen spürte der Spieler die Auswirkungen, fühlte sich schlapp und schlecht.

Aktuell sind seine Blutwerte wieder in Ordnung und er fühle sich auch besser. Irreführend ist hingegen die BILD-Schlagzeile "Sanogo hat Malaria" - weil eben genau diese Zeitung Sanogos Aussage über die guten Blutwerte zitierte.

Rachel Carson, name ring a bell? Do you know who she was, what she did? She died in 1964 and has become a goddess to the environmental leftists -- Showing them the way of Gaia. Her book Silent Spring was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1962. The book caused the panic, started the whole process of lies about how DDT was destroying the world, hence the title "Silent Spring" -- When all things are dead. The book is a fairy-tale, not based on science, but fiction -- "Silent Spring" was not even close to scientifically accurate. All Rachel Carson did was what modern day leftists are doing today, they demonize an industry, in the case of DDT it was the chemical industry, accusing them of spreading mis-information, when in fact the chemical companies were trying to get the truth out. It took over thirty years to expose this hoax and get the truth out. Even today, the leftists are holding conferences and meeting to try and put the DDT genie back in the bottle, but no one is listening to them this time.

DDT is just one of many scares and silly wars perpetrated against objects, thoughts and diseases by leftist that are designed to panic the people into taking actions they would have otherwise avoided. In this case, banning of an insecticide based on no scientific data. In case you are wondering, WHO, yes that UN group, has removed the ban on DDT September 15, 2006. After over thirty years and millions of dead African children, the ban has been lifted and DDT has gone back into production to fight malaria. Yeah, they say it's only for indoor use, but who thinks that will stand the test of time. Why did millions have to die for a leftists fairy tale? There motives were clear, DDT allowed the pushing back of man's habitable boundaries and the leftists want to contain humanity to preserves of their choosing.

And now we come to Al Gore, his fictitious movie "Inconvenient Truth" and global warming, just the latest in the long line of leftists scares and their sycophant perpetrators who are trying to tell us we can control the sun if we will only pay enough taxes and live like they want us to live. You figure that one out for yourselves.

OK, I'll provide my answer ...

The scam never changes, only the targets. Yes, the "Silent Spring" hysteria WAS similar to the present "global warming" hysteria -- as the real process of science was perverted by a social/political movement.

Remember what Saul Alinsky said ... and you will understand the current state of continuous panic being spewed by the left.

Global AIDS Alliance praises PEPFAR

Here's a good opinion piece on the PEPFAR re-authorization, featuring comments from the Global AIDS Alliance. I didn't include this in my previous opinion round-up post because, a) I didn't see it in time, and b) I think this is worth quoting at length. Here are some excerpts:

"The bill is a tremendous achievement, and I commend Senators Biden and Lugar, who authored the bill, and Senator Reid whose fierce determination to bring the bill forward was indispensable," said Dr. Paul Zeitz, Executive Director of the Global AIDS Alliance.

"The amount per year, about $10 billion, is less than 1 percent of this year's federal budget, and thus is a small price to pay for a program that will save millions of lives and foster good will around the world," said Zeitz. [...]

"Myths and disinformation were used by Senators Kyl, Bunning, DeMint and others to try to undermine this bill, but in the end the truth won out," noted Zeitz. "This bill will expand American leadership on global health and foster hope around the world. Once fully funded, it will not only help poor countries but serve America's interests as well."

The bill lays out a five-year strategy for confronting AIDS, TB and malaria, while authorizing, though not actually providing, a total funding level of $48 billion for global health programs. The bill also lays out a policy framework on such closely related issues as gender, care for orphaned children, nutrition, and health care worker shortages.

Senator Kyl and others said the bill would triple the authorized funding for the AIDS program, known as PEPFAR, which is not accurate. He also said a level of $30 billion over five years would already have been "a big change in the amount of money available." In fact, because the Congress is now providing $6 billion a year for these programs, a level of $30 billion would have kept funding at the current level for the next five years. [...]

Kyl also decried the bill's effort to address nutrition, the inheritance rights of women and orphaned children and women's lack of economic opportunities. However, these issues are central to an effective and realistic approach to HIV/AIDS.

"Stopping AIDS is more complicated that handing out medication and telling people to abstain," said Rev. Mpho Tutu, Chair of the Board of the Global AIDS Alliance. "With this bill, the U.S. is starting to address the complexity of these related diseases, and that will make U.S. efforts much more cost-effective and sustainable," said Tutu.

I think that last point from Rev. Tutu is key. AIDS isn't a stand-alone issue, and it can't be approached as if it existed in a vacuum. (I talked about this issue in a previous post.)

After Tony Blair's recent conversion from the Anglican Church to Catholicism he went one step further into blatant ecumenism with his Faith Foundation. Now, with his new Faiths Act which he rolled out on June 10, he goes it one more.

The Tony Blair Faith Foundation was initiated in May 2008 with one of its goals to work toward increased understanding between the major faiths of the world. His new Faiths Act outlines a plan to eradicate malaria promoting an interfaith effort toward this cause. A complete transcript of the audio from the above video follows this article.

My first question regarding this is: Why the need for an interfaith effort to help in the fight against malaria when Blair could just as well promote his cause without using religion as a vehicle? Why not send aid to local governmental officials directly who could then disburse it? Surely, governmental approval would be necessary before such an interfaith outreach as proposed by Blair could be enacted anyway.

"Faiths Act will mobilize global faith communities to come together and achieve multi-faith action on issues of crucial importance in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals. Our first goal is to end deaths caused by malaria. Put simply, between one and three million people die of malaria each year most of them children under five and pregnant mothers living in sub-Saharan Africa. Their deaths are preventable. In Africa 40% of the victims are Muslim. But across much of Asia malaria continues to strike and combating it is a huge opportunity for people across the faiths to act in unison: Hindus, Sikh, Buddhists as well as the Abrahamic faiths. We call, therefore, on the four billion people of faith in the world to help do more to end the scourge of malaria."

Please note that these "Millennium Development Goals" were outlined by the United Nations which has shown itself to be anti-Semitic and not exactly friendly towards Christianity [excepting Roman Catholicism] as well. In fact, the UN has become increasingly pro-Islam. With this in mind, it is curious that Blair would make reference to Judaism, Christianity and Islam as "the Abrahamic faiths" as if there is much in common between the three. Why didn't he refer to Hindus, Sikh and Buddhists as simply ‘the eastern faiths?'

Blair's plan sounds remarkably similar to Rick Warren's P.E.A.C.E plan with respect to Warren's fight against AIDS/HIV. This is not surprising as Warren, a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and Oxford Anayltica, is on the Advisory Council of Blair's Faith Foundation. Could this be a step toward the redistribution of wealth and one world religion as outlined by the channeled writings of Theosophist Alice Bailey among others and as prophesied in the Bible?

16 He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17 so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. [Revelation 13:16-17 NIV]

“Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Economy and Finance released information that the World Bank has provided a credit of approximately US$30 million to the Royal Government of Cambodia to support the Second Health Sector Support Program [HSSP2], which is a project to promote the health care of Cambodian people, especially it focuses on the health of women, of children, and of the poor.

“Senior Minister and the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Keat Chhon, representing Cambodia, signed an agreement to accept the credit with Mr. Ian Porter, Country Director of the World Bank for Cambodia, on Thursday evening [17 June 2008] at the Ministry of Finance.

“According to an announcement of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the project to support the HSSP2 of the Royal Government of Cambodia will be implemented for a period of five years, and up to US$130 million will be spent in total. Now, the World Bank agreed to provide US$30 million, the Australian Agency for International Development [AusAID] granted US$30 million as grant aid, the Department for International Development [DFID] of Britain granted US$50, and the Royal Government of Cambodia contributes US$20 million.

“Senior Minister Keat Chhon said during the signing ceremony that this project aims to support the health strategies of the Royal Government, to promote accesses to, and to receive and to use efficient and qualified health services. He added that the project will be organized following a new mechanism by transferring and by supplying primary health services from non-government organizations to health staff at lower national levels.

“He continued that this project has been created to support the implementation of the 2008 to 2015 health strategic plan of the Royal Government, specifically, this project will contribute to help the Cambodian government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in the health sector.

The three Millennium Development Goals in the health sector are (among eight goals):

4.Reduce child mortality
5.Improve maternal health
6.Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

“Professor Eng Huot, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health, said that over the past decade, the health of Cambodian citizens is improving significantly. The life expectation of men increased from 52 to 58 years, and for women from 56 to 64 years; infant and child mortality declined, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic has been arrested.

“He added that Cambodia still faces several big problems – the maternity death rate is high, the improvement of the malnutrition situation is slow, health services are expensive, health care is not qualified yet, and accidents and noninfectious diseases increase. He went on to say that now, because of the support through the credit granted by the World Bank and by many other development partners, we expect that these major problems will be reduced.

“Also, Mr. Ian Porter said that the World Bank has been involved to promote the health sector in Cambodia since 1996 through two projects: one project to get rid of infectious diseases, and another project to support the health sector. Geopolitical Overview and Statistics on Orphaned/Abandoned Children:

· Located between the huge countries of India and China, Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world with 42% of its population living below the poverty line.

· One in three children drop out of school.

· One estimate states that 10,000 children have been orphaned, and more than a 100,000 forced to leave their villages.

· Unemployment rate: 42% (2004 est.).

· Population below poverty line: 30.9% (2004).

Child Mortality:

· 27,000 children die of dysentery every year.

· Every year sixty thousand children die before they their reach 5th birthday.

Child Labor:

· 2.6 million children are engaged in different sectors of child labor.

· At least 40,000 children are bonded laborers.

· Over 5,000 children are working and living on the streets.

· Half of street children earn a meager living, around NPRs (Nepalese Rupees) 25 per day (US$ 0.3 per day) by rag picking.

· UNICEF 1996: In Nepal there are estimated to be 26,000 children of the street, i.e. those who both work and live in the street. There are an additional 3,700 children on the street, i.e. those who live with their families but spend most of their time playing and working in the street.

· The 1981 census showed that 60% of children in the 10 to 14 age group were economically active, but an altered definition meant that the 1991 census estimated that it was 23% of all 10 to 14 year olds.

· These are the ones in some kind of regular employment (i.e. not lone street children) Children tend to work at least 8 or 10 hours per day, but mostly do not earn more than about NPRs 16 per day (US$ 0.2 per day). Of urban child workers, around one quarter have received work injuries.

Education:

· Less than half of orphaned children are literate; and of those who are, most are barely literate as a result of non-formal education programmes such as the Children's Feeding Project (one organisation which is supported by the Trust).

· 73% of women 15 years or older are illiterate.

Childcare:

· Food Crisis

· Out of 2.5 million disabled people, among them 5 % are children.

Healthcare:

· There is only one Children's Hospital.

· 450 pregnant mothers out of 100,000 die in childbirth every year.

· Only 4% of women are attended by trained health workers during childbirth.

· Nepal is one of more than 20 countries have serious problems of malnutrition and stunted growth as a result of the food crisis that has set back anti-poverty efforts by years- the World Health Organization.

· The first case of HIV in Nepal was reported in 1988. Since then the Nepali government statistics list under 60,000 cases, while The World Health Organization (WHO) actually reported over 200,000 cases of HIV, a much more realistic number. CIA World Factbook Reports 61,000.

Sexual Exploitation / Illegal Human Trafficking:

· Nepal has the number one child disappearance rate in the world.

· Annually 12,000 women and children are trafficked to India.

· 34 % of marriages are children under 15 years of age.

· According to the WHO, Kathmandu is a major center of prostitution.

· There is a far greater proportion of boys than girls among the street children. A major cause of this imbalance is that many girls are duped into sexual exploitation. It is difficult to know how many are involved in this. In 1996 UNICEF estimated that each year, 4,000 to 5,000 girls between 10 and 14 years old are trafficked to India.

Bad Beef Peddled By Supermarkets

It's not just us, folks.

In ten randomly chosen supermarkets, nine out of ten packages of ground beef were found to have high levels of bacteria, including traces of E.coli from faeces. Five out of ten had bacteria levels more than 40 times higher than allowed by the health authorities.

Politiken also found that many places have continued selling meat purchased from a slaughterhouse in Germany that has been reported seven times in the past 18 months for sending products to Denmark deemed dangerous by health authorities.

Experts Expect More Glacial Waves

The phenomenon, known as jokulhlaup, occurs when lakes formed by glacial melt water burst through the ice.

Sebastian H Mernild of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, studied a similar phenomenon that took place in the Kangerlussuaq area last August. No one was killed, but the event resulted in a large lake being completely drained in 12 hours, spreading large chunks of ice on roads.

Mernild said jokulhlaup occur without warning and typically take place in parts of glaciers were melt water has gathered on top of glaciers, or where glacial lakes have formed. If the floods occur near populated areas, they can shatter bridges, roads and buildings. They can also have a dramatic effect on the terrain and wildlife in unpopulated areas.

Mugabe launches cheap food "hampers"

You know that special place in Hell that I keep referring to? It might get a little crowded, so there might need to be another one. Oh wait a minute, a crowded place in Hell...that would be hell now wouldn't it? How do these people (such as Mugabe) sleep? Nearly 1/3 of the population in Zimbabwe is "chronically malnourished".

President Robert Mugabe launched new "cheap food hampers" Wednesday while maintaining a total ban on famine relief by aid agencies in a year in which the country is expected to undergo its worst famine since independence in 1980.

Economists say that Zimbabwe's economy is heading for a crash, as inflation soars to new heights. Gono said Wednesday inflation was now at 2,2-million percent, although analysts estimate it at ten times that - and the Zimbabwe dollar is plunging to new lows.

A gene variant that emerged thousands of years ago to protect Africans from malaria may raise their vulnerability to HIV infection but help them live longer once infected, researchers said on Wednesday.

In Africa, the gene variant may account for 11 percent of HIV infections, the researchers said.

Sexual behavior and other social factors cannot completely explain why more than two-thirds of the world's 33-million people infected with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa, the researchers said. So genes may be playing a pivotal role.

The gene in question controls a protein on the surface of red blood cells.

But even as it elevates a person's susceptibility to HIV infection, having this version of the gene seems to slow the progression of Aids. Those with the variant who have been infected with HIV live roughly two years longer than people who do not have it, the researchers said.

A gene which apparently evolved to protect people from malaria increases their vulnerability to HIV infection by 40%, say US and UK scientists.

People of African descent have a variation of the "DARC" gene which may interfere with their ability to fight HIV in its early stages. The Cell Host and Microbe study says the gene accounts for millions of extra HIV cases in sub-Saharan Africa. People with the gene appear to live longer with HIV than others.

While the differences in HIV prevalence in different parts of the world can be partly explained by different social conditions and sexual behaviour, scientists have long suspected that there may be genetic reasons why the virus is rife in certain communities.
