Yes it's true. We went to see the anti-war vet yesterday and Margot is now tipping the scales at a healthy 5.7 pounds-a 25% increase since last month. She's been hiking a lot and playing gladiators with Ori, so it's pure muscle!

She also got her rabies shot (she screamed like the little girl she is), worm medicine and a mani/pedi, which she did not enjoy.

She misses you and sends her best to Mazzy.

Self described Scarf-Rockers, Margot & The Nuclear So And So's are playing the 3pm slot at Forecastle. If you recall, I posted about them back in February because they were asking for 3 fans whom they could write a record about. The band takes its name from Gwyneth Paltrow's character in Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums, and has been known to project sequences from Anderson's films onstage during their sets, but I wouldn't expect it in the festival atmosphere of quick tear-downs (and day light). With 8 people centered around a Rhodes piano and a cello and an assortment of other instruments, and with influences like Paul Simon, Rufus Wainwright, Radiohead and probably most apparent, The Arcade Fire, these guys are absolutely known for their live shows.

On their debut album, The Dust in Retreat, Edwards and crew tells a series of cleverly crafted everyman stories that cause you to remember them before ever hearing them, because you can connect to the story being told in a personal way. Their sophomore effort, Animals!, should be around right around their Forecastle slot and hopefully will be officially released by that day, but regardless they've been playing songs from the new album during live shows for some time now.

The self-confessed daredevil is going to make sure this milestone is one to remember.

She will take advantage of a two-week break in filming to go home to the Gold Coast and celebrate the big day with her boyfriend and her best mate.

“No me interesa la política. Entiendo que debe ser norma de los artistas el no interesarse por la política. El artista debe ser apolítico. El artista se debe únicamente al público, y no debe tener nunca, creo yo, ningún matiz político”. Lo dijo Carlos Gardel. Sin embargo cantó un tema alusivo a Bartolomé Mitre, adhirió al golpe de 1930 y sedujo a los anarquistas con su música.  También sufrió prohibiciones que no impidieron que pudiera trascender. El perfil político del cantor de tangos inmortal. ¿Hubiese sido peronista?.

La figura del cantante más trascendente de la Argentina, declarado patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco, es algo polémica. No solo se discute el lugar de su nacimiento, sino algunos pasos de su vida que quedaron transformados en anécdotas y que contribuyeron a la fabricación de un mito.

Carlos Gardel fue un buen intérprete y mejor compositor, pero, sobre todo, un excelente productor de su propio éxito. Supo vender sus canciones y su imagen, cuidar su presencia y fama, lograr excelentes contratos y aprovechar el poder de la radio y el cine para proyectar su carrera.  

Pero su prestigio en vida no se lo debió a la política, aunque supo incursionar en melodías que tenían contenido político y relacionarse con el poder y los punteros.

Si bien la canción de protesta no existía como tal, ciertos temas musicales referían a cuestiones sociales pero predominaban las melodías que enaltecían a figuras o ideologías del poder. Recordemos que en esa época se gesta el fascismo en Europa, y Argentina no estaba ajena a esos movimientos nacionalistas. Aquí también la música  era utilizada como un elemento de propaganda.

Oscar del Priore escribió uno de los mejores trabajos sobre la vida de Gardel y allí relata algunos aspectos de la canción política de la voz más famosa de Buenos Aires.

En la época en la que le tocó actuar a Gardel, era muy difícil que alguien interpretara canciones con algún tono de compromiso social. Gardel, en 1913, al realizar sus primeras grabaciones, dejó impresa la canción “A Mitre”, una retórica oda al ex presidente, cuya muerte, ocurrida siete años atrás, permitía ubicarlo entre los próceres de la patria. Puede decirse entonces que Gardel no cantaba a su clase al alabar a Mitre, representante del conservadurismo en un momento de crisis.

Si bien por entonces se acostumbraba cantar a figuras como Mitre, todavía no había en Gardel claridad política. La evolución se daría muy poco después, a partir de 1917, cuando estrenó “Mi noche triste”, de Pascual Contursi. Como auténtico representante de su pueblo le dio al mismo una canción que por tantos años lo representaría: el tango. Durante una década desfilará a través de la voz de Gardel toda una avanzada de las formas cantables porteñas, junto con los dramas del suburbio y una persistente crítica al decadente mundo del cabaret.

Gardel no fue un político. Fue un cantante. Pero como tal, un revolucionario, al descubrir con un agudo sentido popular a Celedonio Flores, a Contursi, a Enrique Cadícamo, a Discépolo, estrenando todas sus obras. En 1927 la postura de Gardel ya se hacía combativa en sus canciones, con un tinte anarquista: “Mudo de pena me quedo / cuando llega la pobreza / hasta la mísera pieza / de un po bre trabajador./Y quisiera que mi vida / en oro se convir tiera! para que nadie bebiera las hieles del sin sabor”, (“Vida amarga”, letra de Eugenio Cárdenas).

En 1928 cantó “Qué vachaché”, primer tango con el estilo de Discépolo: “Hoy la honradez la venden al contado / y a la moral la dan por moneditas...”. En 1930, momento de crisis aguda, Gardel interpretó “Pordioseros”, de Barbieri:

“Me revelo ante el destino cruel / que miserias y dolores da / y apenado me pregunto /¿dónde está la caridad? / ¿Dónde se halla el gesto altruista / que de grandezas se pueblan / si a los que andan entre nieblas / no se les tiene piedad?”.

Cuando en el mes de septiembre de 1930 estalla la crisis en forma de movimiento militar, y Uriburu derroca a Yrigoyen, Francisco García Jiménez compone inmediatamente el tango “ ¡Viva la Patria!”, que dedica “A la mujer, al ejército, al periodismo ilustre, a los prohombres, a la juventud universitaria, al pueblo todo. A las que anticiparon el dulce premio de sus mejores sonrisas; a los que dieron sus nobles vidas; a todos los que aportaron un arma, un grito o un gesto siquiera, a la conquista de la idea suprema, el 6 de septiembre de 1930”.

García Jiménez llevó este tango —con música de su habitual colaborador Anselmo Aieta— a Carlos Gardel. La edición fue realizada por la Editorial Alfredo Perrotti y Gardel grabó el disco el 25 de septiembre de 1930. ¿Por qué cantó Gardel esta obra? Creo que no fue por una militancia fascista. Bueno es recordar que desde 1929 se vivía una profunda crisis por la que comenzó a responsabilizarse a Yrigoyen, y en diversos sectores fue bien recibida su caída, aunque poco después, muchos se mostrarían arrepentidos. Gardel habrá pensado, como tantos, que el golpe militar era una solución.

Lo indudable es que, en ese momento, Gardel, con el antecedente de haber cantado en su juventud en comités conservadores y con su grabación de “ Viva la Patria!”, podía quedarse tranquilo, e incluso, “acomodarse”. Sin embargo el 16 de octubre de 1930, poco más de un mes después del golpe, grabó un disco que llegaría a prohibirse: “Yira, yira”, de Discépolo: “Cuando te dejen tirao, des pués de cinchar, lo mismo que a mí...”. De ahí en más, comenzó la etapa combativa de Gardel, con un repertorio de tendencia anarquista que era el reflejo de todos los personajes de su tiempo.

 Gardel fue un revolucionario en su arte. Como hombre no fue en absoluto un conformista, y su evolución política se fue dando en el proceso de su evolución artística. Cuando joven cantó en comités conservadores. Pero recordemos que en aquellos años no había radio y conseguir un trabajo no era fácil. Además, todos los payadores lo hacían y su actuación en comités de cualquier partido no significaba embanderarse con el mismo. Era una labor profesional.

 ¿Gardel hubiese adherido al peronismo?

Murió varios años antes del nacimiento del movimiento político argentino más influyente de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Indudablemente compartió las vivencias y visiones con los que participaron de la consagración de Juan Domingo Perón. Gardel no era de la aristocracia terrateniente ni de la oligarquía, aunque se codeó con ellos. Sus canciones identifican al pueblo obrero, al trabajador, al que sintió el peronismo como propio.

De haberse acercado al Coronel Perón (como muchas otras estrellas del espectáculo) hubiese sido un ícono del peronismo. Su  muerte lo alejó de ser usado como símbolo partidario, quedando preservado como un ídolo popular sin banderías, con su música como único testimonio político, con una historia pulida para el mito.

 Gardel, una figura política.

Otra visión sobre su compromiso político lo encontramos en una nota publicada por el diario Río Negro el 3 de julio de 2005 firmada por Sofanor Novillo Corbalán. El cronista indica que la obra ¡Viva la patria! es una canción que solicitó Gardel para apoyar el golpe de Uriburu, pero que algunos disimularon su verdadero motivo.

La vida de Gardel, estudiada hasta el detalle, esconde, no obstante, algunos aspectos importantes. Dentro del fárrago de artículos escritos hay algunos capítulos en blanco, hay silencios sobre cuestiones que muchas veces son cruciales en la vida de un hombre. Y quizás, de esos silencios, el más estridente sea el vinculado a la política. O para decirlo en otros términos: lo que se tiene oculto es la filiación política del cantante. O para expresarlo con otras palabras, ¿estaba Gardel afiliado a algún partido? La respuesta al interrogante anterior es incuestionablemente afirmativa. El "Zorzal criollo" estuvo siempre vinculado a la política, era afiliado al Partido Conservador de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Además, estaba estrechamente relacionado con gravitantes políticos de la época como Alberto Barceló, Pedro Cernadas y otros. De Barceló, aunque se conoce poco de su obra, se habla mucho y mal. Y los que realmente la conocen, la silencian, porque es considerado políticamente incorrecto hablar bien de la gestión eficiente y progresista que puede haber realizado un gobernante conservador. Se habla de él sólo para recordar su relación con el juego, la trata de blancas y sus vínculos con Juan Ruggiero. Es muy probable que Gardel estuviera vinculado a lo mejor y lo peor de los gobiernos de la época, especialmente a los gobernantes de la legendaria Barracas al Sur, es decir la ciudad de Avellaneda. El fue testigo del rápido progreso y de la acelerada urbanización e industrialización de esa zona.

El compromiso del cantante con el intendente de Avellaneda, Alberto Barceló, era muy fuerte. Amenizaba los actos partidarios con gran éxito. Eran tiempos en que la política partidaria penetraba en la vida cotidiana de los ciudadanos. Tiempos en que en Buenos Aires se era conservador o radical. Boina colorada los primeros, blanca los segundos. Era como en Córdoba, en que no había otra opción más que ser demócrata o radical. Aunque en Buenos Aires se practicara el fraude y en Córdoba, jamás. Dada su popularidad, Gardel pudo mantenerse neutral, pero nunca lo hizo. La adhesión de Gardel al Partido Conservador no fue producto del oportunismo. Si eso hubiera ocurrido habría usado boina blanca. Hubiera cantado en los comités radicales. Se hubiera relacionado con el "Gallego Julio", símbolo radical de la mafia bonaerense, enfrentado mortalmente con "Ruggerito". Hubiera hecho, en fin, lo que hoy muchos hacen para quedar bien con el poder de turno.

Dos tercios de su carrera musical como cantor y compositor, Gardel la hizo bajo la égida del régimen radical. En 1917, un año después de comenzar el primer mandato de Yrigoyen, grababa con el sello Odeón, "Mi noche triste" de Pascual Contursi, y el primer tango, pero ya con música de su autoría, "Margot", es de 1919. Durante la gestión radical de Marcelo de Alvear en 1923 grabó, también con música compuesta por él, el inolvidable "Mano a mano". Estos son algunos ejemplos tomados al azar, pues entre el 12 de octubre de 1916 y el 6 de septiembre de 1930 , es decir, durante toda la etapa de gobiernos radicales, el cantor grabó la mayor parte de los tangos y canciones que, si hasta hoy se los escucha, es porque él fue el primero en cantarlos. Durante esos lustros adquirió la fama suficiente para probar suerte en el extranjero. Y fue entonces precisamente, primero en París y después en Nueva York, cuando Gardel no sólo consolida su fama sino que la proyecta a nivel internacional. Este período de su vida coincide curiosamente con el acceso al poder del partido con el que se siempre estuvo vinculado.

Había comenzado la década de los '30, la que la historia oficial ha denominado "infame", pero que no fue ni una cosa ni la otra: ni década ni infame. Entre 1930 y su muerte, Gardel vivió virtualmente en el exterior. Es más, aunque Buenos Aires lo tiene como ícono indiscutible, en 1931, en París, Carlos Gardel aconsejaba a Julio de Caro en los siguientes términos: "Quédate aquí y volvé a Buenos Aires de cuando en cuando, como hago yo, como quién va a visitar los restos de una novia querida que lleva en el corazón".

Las razones por la que está eclipsada su condición política de conservador hay que buscarla en las mismas causas por las que, tantos episodios y etapas de la vida argentina fueron borrados, falseados u olvidados de un modo adrede. De otra manera cómo explicar, por ejemplo, que si no hubiera sido por Osvaldo Bayer que "descubrió" la masacre de trabajadores rurales en la Patagonia perpetrada por el régimen yrigoyenista, estos episodios hubieran quedado literalmente sepultados en la historia. A lo que se sumó la Semana Trágica, ocurrida en Buenos Aires, ambos episodios ocurridos durante la primera presidencia de Yrigoyen hubieran justificado más plenamente que a este período se le impusiera el rótulo de "infame". Bien se puede afirmar que nunca en un gobierno constitucional murió tanta gente como consecuencia de la represión gubernativa. El radicalismo como agravante, desaprovechó dramáticamente el instrumento central para la construcción de una sólida democracia en la Argentina, como fue la Ley Saenz Peña.

Durante los gobiernos de Yrigoyen y Alvear, habiendo sólo catorce provincias, en la Argentina se produjeron treinta y tres intervenciones federales. Se distorsionó de un modo sistemático la voluntad popular de las provincias. Después de triunfar en 1916, el radicalismo asumió que no tenía adversarios sino enemigos sin derechos cívicos. Jamás aceptó las minorías ni a la oposición.

Ellos entendían que la Unión Cívica Radical representaba a la Argentina y no que era solo una parte de la Nación.
Carlos Gardel, como tantos argentinos más, era un enconado adversario del partido radical. Por eso celebró la revolución de setiembre de 1930 con un tango que grabó para la ocasión. Es que se debe advertir, que las cuestiones sociales y políticas no estuvieron nunca muy alejadas del tango. Los propios partidos, sus símbolos, y algunos conspicuos dirigentes fueron títulos y temas de tango, así por ejemplo: "Unión Cívica" con letra de Juan D'Estefano; "Hipólito Yrigoyen" con letra de D. Santa Cruz; "El Socialista Argentino" dedicado a Alfredo Palacios, con letra de L. Laiello. Después vino "La descamisada" de Enrique Maroni. Una estudiosa del tema, Nora Sessa de Kramer , agrega que : "Homero Manzi, siempre dio su testimonio político y fue así que con la música de la milonga "Betinotti" de su autoría, escribió también dos milongas , una dedicada a Eva Perón y otra para Juan Perón, que fueron cantadas por Hugo del Carril".

Dentro de este contexto no es difícil entender por qué Carlos Gardel le encargó nada menos que a Francisco García Giménez y a Anselmo Aieta, la composición del tango "Viva la Patria", que Gardel grabó y cantó para celebrar el derrocamiento de Yrigoyen. Se debe aclarar que el autor de la letra, García Giménez, no era precisamente un desconocido en el mundo de la música popular. Fue autor de numerosos y memorables tangos, entre ellos "Que siga el corso" de 1926, aquel cuya letra dice:"... te quiero conocer, saber adónde vas, alegre mascarita que me gritas al pasar..." y la música, es de Anselmo Aieta, talentoso compositor de numerosos tangos, entre otros,"Corrales viejos", lugar éste al que algunos conocedores lo señalan como la cuna del tango. El mismo García Giménez escribió un libro de consulta obligada hasta hoy: "Así nacieron los tangos" (Buenos Aires, Lozada, 1975). Estamos entonces ante un tango, "Viva la Patria", escrito y cantado por hombres que tenían una clara idea de lo que celebraban. Era sin lugar a dudas, un trasunto de sus ideas y emociones. La letra de este tango nunca antes fue publicada en un diario de Córdoba. Mientras que hoy, cualquiera puede, Internet mediante, encontrar la letra siempre oculta de este tango-canción. Y si se usa este medio para encontrarla , se advertirá con asombro que si bien la letra de la misma es clara y su intención directa, está precedida de una curiosa aclaración que increíblemente dice: "Grabada por Carlos Gardel en setiembre de 1930. Tango escrito como protesta frente al golpe militar del 6 de setiembre de 1930 en la Argentina, conocido como "el cuartelazo", tomado de Horacio Salas, "El Tango" (Ed. Planeta, 1996, Buenos Aires)". Ante tamaña mala interpretación muchos se preguntarán cómo esto es posible. La respuesta creemos haberla dado. Como quiera que haya sido el tango "Viva la Patria" canta así :

 "La niebla gris rasgó veloz el vuelo de un avión
y fue el triunfal amanecer de la revolución.
Y como ayer el inmortal 1810,
salió a la calle el pueblo radiante de altivez.
No era un extraño el opresor cual el de un siglo atrás, pero era el mismo pabellón que quiso arrebatar.
Y al resguardar la libertad del trágico malón, la voz eterna y pura por las calles resonó:

!Viva la Patria!, y la gloria de ser libres.
!Viva la Patria! que quisieron mancillar.
!Orgullosos de ser argentinos al trazar nuestros nuevos destinos!

!Viva la Patria!
de rodillas en su altar.
Y la legión que construyó la nacionalidad nos alentó, nos dirigió desde la eternidad.

Entrelazados vio avanzar la capital del Sur soldados y tribunos, linaje y multitud.
Amanecer primaveral de la revolución, de tu vergel cada mujer fue una fragante flor, y hasta tiñó tu pabellón la sangre juvenil haciendo más glorioso nuestro grito varonil".

A esta altura, es innecesario aclarar que Gardel no fue un adversario más de Hipólito Yrigoyen, porque éste al igual que aquel, fueron dos grandes en el sentimiento popular. Gardel versus Yrigoyen. Aunque en planos distintos, ambos fueron genuinos ídolos del pueblo; por eso, quizás resulte curioso y altamente simbólico lo que nos recuerda Ramiro de Casasbellas, en el diario "La Opinión" del martes 24 de junio de 1975: "que la multitud que acompañó el cadáver de Gardel el 6 de julio de 1936 en el cementerio de La Chacarita, fue muy superior a la que en 1933 despidió a Yrigoyen."

The choices are plentiful for girls, but we've discovered a few options for boys, too.  Read on for some names that bring to mind the best of the warm and sunny months.

First off, you might consider the names of the months themselves:

• June:  A simple and sweet name with a long history of use, suitable for a girl.  Juno, the Roman Queen of the Gods, inspired the month's name; you might also use the mythological moniker for a daughter.
• July: A spunkier and more innovative choice for a daughter, but likely to be misunderstood as Julie.  The month was named after Julius Caesar, making Julia and Julian attractive options.
• August: A great idea for a boy that could leap over the gender barrier and be used for a daughter, too.  Or stick with the traditional Augusta, which has an interesting throwback vibe. 

The gemstones and flowers associated with the summer months offer some possibilities:

• Pearl, Ruby, Peridot: The gems are associated with June, July and August.  While Peridot might go too far, Pearl and Ruby are unassailable names with long histories of use.  The Italian and Spanish Perla is a Top 500 name in the US right now, but beware - La Perla is also a famous Italian lingerie designer.
• Rose, Lily, Poppy:  June's flower, the rose, is a simple and enduring choice for a daughter. The water lily is associated with July.  And August is the month of the Poppy, a promising botanical option for daughters that we covered a few days ago.  (See Name of the Day: Poppy.)
• Margaret, Margo, Margot, Megan, Greta, Gretchen, Mairead: While it's a subtle link, the name Margaret - and its infinite variants - all mean "pearl."

Summer was the 158th most popular given name for girls in 2007, and it seems to us one of the less substantial seasonal monikers.  Instead, you might consider a foreign word spin on the word.  While these options are tremendously appealing, know that it can be tricky to use an exotic name without sharing the heritage:

• Natsu, Natsuki, Natsumi:  Japanese girls' names that mean summer.  They're said NAT soo, NAT soo kee and NAT soo mee.
• Seika: Another option from Japan, this time meaning "pure summer."  It is said SEH ee kah.  Realize that this is quite close to the watchmaker Seiko, and likely to be confused.
• Soleil: The French word for sun makes an interesting name for a summer-born daughter.  Pronounced so LAY, it is not used in France, where all names must come from an approved list.
• Suvi: A Finnish girls' name meaning summer.  The pronunciation is soo vee.

Finally, the star signs, planets and mythological stories associated with the zodiac offer some ideas:

• Gemma: While the name means jewel, it is similar to Gemini, the sign for children born from May 21 through June 21.
• Artemis, Diana, Luna: Babes born from June 22 to July 22 are ruled by Cancer, the Crab.  We don't suggest you call your baby Crusty.  But the sign is associated with the moon, so Luna feels like an appropriate choice.  The goddesses Diana (in Roman mythology) and Artemis (from the Greek) are also linked to all things lunar, so their names earn a spot on our list.
• Chandra, Ayla, Selena: This trio of slightly more exotic names all mean moon from Sanskrit, Turkish and Greek, respectively.  
• Leo, Leonardo, Leonidus:  Late July into August is ruled by Leo the Lion and the Leo names make for an appealing choice for a son.  Leo stands alone, or choose an elaboration.
• Leonie, Leodora: If your little cub is a daughter, there are a few Leo choices that work nicely for her, too.  Or take some creative license and choose the classic Leah or the obscure saint Leocadia.
• Persephone: Should your daughter arrive at summer's end, she'll be a Virgo (August 23 through September 23).  Persephone signals the change of the seasons, as in her myth she must annually return to the Underworld and bring an end to fruitful summer.

Lastly, you might consider the classic Theresa or Teresa or the diminutive forms Tess and Tessa.  While the name's origins are debated, the Greek word theros, meaning summer, often prompts baby name guides to list this as yet another summertime name.

So break out the sunscreen, take me out to the ballpark and maybe consider one of these choices for your summer-born child.

En tout cas, je suis rarement contente de moi "couturièrement" parlant, alors pour une fois j'espère faire quelque chose de correct. Ce midi, je pense que je vais réfléchir à ce haut. Et ensuite j'aimerai refaire la tenue, mais en taille SD. Ca irait bien à Margot. Maryweather est trop "mastoc" pour la porter je pense, mais pourquoi pas. Et puis un peu de couleur me change, c'est le printemps ! Assez de noir, blanc, violet, gris ! Si je m'en sors bien, j'aimerai bien vendre les deux tenues, ça m'arrondira le mois, et il y a bien besoin ^^;

Si il existait en BJD XD Mais lorsque vous regardez bien, ce sont toujours les mêmes formes qui reviennent: chemises, pantalon, pull, veste Ca vaut le coup de faire un bon patron et de le décliner sous multiples matières avec plus ou moins de poches, col ou ceinture.

Mais lorsque ces tenues seront dispos sur le site anglais, je me laisserai bien tenter, si il ne m'arrive pas de cou*lles entre temps ^^;;;

Je zal toch vannacht maar een kleine 3,5 uur geslapen hebben.... :( Natas kwam slapen (vanwege de stakingen van de bus) en ze vond het wel grappig om bij ons op bed te komen liggen. Nou ja, prima, maakt mij geen zak uit. Kan ik in elk geval nog een grappig verhaal ervan maken dat ik met 2 meiden in bed gelegen heb.

Maar Natas sliep eigenlijk best snel.... En Margot begon ook weg te dommelen... Maar ik niet, plus dat ik nog best wel erg weinig ruimte had. Dus ik besloot vannacht op het luchtbed te gaan liggen. En nu ben ik moe, want bij ons in de woonkamer staat zo'n beestje... Een dwerghamster genaamd Beppie Klauterkabouter Wijffie..... EN DIE MAAKT HERRIE 'S NACHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! normaal hoort ik dat niet maar dit keer was het heel erg... Maar goed, tussen half 3 en 6 heb ik redelijk geslapen en ben ik maar 1 keer wakker geworden...

Natas blijft vanavond nog een keer slapen, ik vrees dat ik morgen alleen nog maar een ronddraaiend radje hoor..........

Margot's health had been failing for a week or two. I noticed that she hadn't been eating, so Ryan and I got her out of her cage one night and saw that she was so weak she could barely walk. She would take a few steps and then collapse. We tried feeding her wet cat food (recommended), but all she would do is lick it. Ryan held her in his lap in a towel for a couple of hours and fed her sips of water, which she eagerly took. We tried doing this for a few more days, but she had gotten past the point where she wanted food or water.

Last night Ryan went to a movie, so I got Margot out of her cage and kept her on the couch with me all evening. I tried giving her food and water, but she wouldn't take either. I knew she was close to the end since hedgehogs only live 5-7 years, so I knew there was nothing a vet could do. And I didn't know what else to do besides make sure she was comfortable and loved. I had a terrible feeling that she wouldn't make it through the night.

She was alive this morning when I checked on her, but barely. I got her out and held her for a few minutes, and when I put her back in her cage I told her that I loved her and that she had been a very good pet just in case it was the last time I had a chance to say that. Turns out, it was. I checked on her again this afternoon around 2:45 and she was gone.

I'll miss her surly attitude and sticky kisses. She had fun in the yard a couple of weeks ago. She had a good life overall, and had a house full of good friends. In the end, I think that's all anyone can ask for.

Since Margot might not be living her twilight years to the fullest by being inside all the time, I decided to put her out in the yard and let her forage for grass, bugs, worms, and whatever else she could find. 

In the meantime, Sunshine and Oliver sat at the door and wondered why Margot got to play outside and they didn't.  I had to sit them down and explain that they are indoor kitties.  Of course they have known this all along, but need to be reminded of it every once in a while.

I snapped some pics while shopping for gardening supplies the other day as well.  Nothing spectacular, but I figured I'd share anyway to add a little color to this icky Monday.

And last but not least, I made a special vegan cookbook for Heather for her birthday, which was April 21.  It's actually not finished yet but it's the thought that counts, right?  (I suck at giving gifts on time.)  Anyway, I covered a small photo album with quilt batting and fabric, then cut out the apple shape and glued that on with the letters.  Each page of the album holds one 4x6 photo, or in this case, recipe card. 

I plan on filling the book with delicious vegan recipes that Ryan and I have invtented over the last few months - and there are many of them, believe me!  I wouldn't mind also starting a vegan recipe blog where I could post recipes and photos of the tasty and beautiful meals we create.  I love food and I like sharing it with others.  I know most people who look at this blog aren't vegan but that doesn't mean you can't go meatless and/or dairy free for one meal.  Maybe I will post some photos that will tempt even the most committed carnivore.

RAPTOR CENTER UPDATE: I know I've said this before, but I OFFICIALLYstart my rehabilitation training at the raptor center this Thursday (May 1).  May Day seems like an appropriate day to begin.  Anyway, Jodeane, the director of the MRP, will be at the center on Thursday so I'm heading out there a little early to meet up with her and begin my flight cage training.  I'm a little nervous to handle the larger birds after the mishap with Cypress that I mentioned in my last post but practice makes perfect.  I have to expect some slight blunders before I get them birdies flying high.

I have also started making notes and plans for a book I plan to write about the raptor center.  I'm not entirely sure what direction it will take yet, but I'm going to let my research, interviews with other volunteers, and my general thoughts and feelings lead me wherever I'm supposed to go.  I rarely steer myself wrong.

Whew.  That got kind of wordy.  So, until next time...

Nicole Kidman.

Despite being one of the biggest movie stars in business for over a decade and having being best known at one point more for making up one half of the ultimate Hollywood power couple rather than for her movie roles, Nicole Kidman stepped up to the plate at the turn of the century and proved once and for all that she could turn out magnificent work on screen on a regular basis. Prior to her double hit in 2001 with the creepy horror The Others and her Oscar nominated turn in the musical Moulin Rouge! Kidman's only real performance of note had come under the direction of Gus van Sant in 1995s To Die For, post 2001 she enjoyed a few years of marvellous success in which she took risks entirely foreign to stars of her status, Birthday Girl, The Hours, Dogville, and Birth all proved her capabilities as an actress on smaller and more serious scales. Though since 2004, success has generally eluded her, her participation in movies such as Fur and Margot at the Wedding prove she is still willing to take those risks, and that can never be a bad thing.

The Dude;

Steve Buscemi.

Perhaps the ultimate king of indie cinema. After taking bit parts in the Coen bros. Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink, Steve Buscemi rocketed to fame as Mr. Pink in Quentin Tarantino's Resevoir Dogs. Since then he has enjoyed a wonderfully varied career as an actor, taking part in the tiniest indie films yet still keeping his profile alive in big budget pictures such as Armageddon, Monster's Inc. and The Island. Buscemi has also enjoyed success behind the camera, directing small indie films, perhaps most notably 2007's Interview, as well episodes of HBO shows, Oz and The Sopranos, the latter of which he had a tremendous part on during the shows fifth season. Buscemi is that rare kind of performer who has managed to remain a famous name in major movies without ever selling out his crediblity.

The Director;

Sam Mendes.

Coming from the world of theatre, few could have judged Sam Mendes if he had kept to the style that he knew, as many have done before him. Yet in his three feature films to date, Mendes has displayed a magnificent eye for gloriously cinematic visuals, mixing that visual flair with beautifully human stories he has quickly emerged as one of the more exciting directors in American cinema. Having picked up the Academy Award for direction with his debut film and having that very same film win Best Picture cannot have been an easy act to follow, but so far Mendes has remained varied and interesting and it would not be a surprise to see him surpass that marvellous debut at least once in the future.

The Picture;

The Searchers (John Ford, 1956)

John Ford and John Wayne began collaborating in 1939 with Stagecoach, yet their most famous cinematic pairing came 17 years later with their landmark work in The Searchers. Wayne had played outlaws and men of immensely tough spirit yet never before had he gone to the lengths that he had done in this film, his Ethan Edwards was a racist, obsessive, borderline psychopath and these themes radiated throughout the movie. It was not the first film to explore these themes but certainly one of the first to probe them to the extent that it was done here. Fords attempts to delve into the plight of the Native American and the abuse they were subjected to was many a year ahead of its time to the point of being nothing but a modest commercial success upon initial release, yet as the years have gone by, its status has grown and the way it examines the formation of a nation holds up as well and as powerfully today as it has ever done.

i've been doing a lot of painting lately and i suppose margot dog felt the need to express herself, too.

if anyone has any tips for getting acrylic paint off of carpet, that would be super awesome.

Our friend Dodge over at My Old Kentucky Blog put us on to something that Margot & The Nuclear So And So wants to do, which is to write 3 separate records about 3 separate individual fans. Anyone can submit an application of sorts, just telling them about yourself and your background. It's a really incredibly cool project, but the end result won't come around for some time. Nevertheless, how cool would it be to tell your children when you're older that you had an album written about you.....

Uma família muito disfuncional. O que isso lembra? Pequena Miss Sunshine? Não, pois agora isso cabe à Margot at the Wedding (sem título brasileiro), o mais novo filme de Noah Baumbach.

Confesso que só assisti a dois filmes dirigidos por ele, esse e o extraordinário A Lula e a Baleia, que já trazia em sua trama uma família cheia de problemas, um cuidado incrível com seus personagens e um roteiro maravilhoso e bem conduzido.
Pois bem, Noah Baumbach chega ao ápice ao se tratar de personagens, pois nesse filme ele não sente pudor em mostrar todos os defeitos dos mesmos, fazemos com que todos se tornem difíceis de gostar.

A personagem do título usa da ironia e da sinceridade para se expressar, ela não pensa se vai afetar alguém com o que vai falar, nem liga para o que os outros achem dela, ela simplesmente sente a necessidade de apontar os erros de cada um, até os dela. Nicole Kidman faz aqui um trabalho monstruoso, é seu melhor desempenho desde Dogville, e falando um pouco de injustiças do Oscar, a performance dela está melhor do que todas as indicadas que vi, talvez um pouco inferior a Julie Christie, e uma vez percebemos que o Oscar é mais uma indústria que vive de marketing do que uma premiação dos melhores.

Muitos não vão gostar do filme, porque simplesmente não vão gostar dos personagens, pois eles se esforçam para serem detestáveis, mais esse é mais um trunfo do roteiro brilhante de Noah Baumbach, e de sua direção intimista que tira o máximo de seus atores (não me conformo que Jennifer Jason Leigh e Nicole Kidman estejam fora das principais premiações por atuação), enfim um filme para se ver, agora se cada um vai gostar depende de como cada um vai encarar os personagens, que podem ser retratos de nós mesmos ou das pessoas a nossa volta.

Cotação: 10/10
