Lors du SLCC (Second Life Community Convention), Mark Kingdon et Philip Rosedale ont annoncé les éléments suivants :

Le temp passé par les utilisateurs de Second Life est de 35 millions d’heures par mois,

L’objectif de 100 millions est dans le viseur.

Philip Rosedale travaille sur une camera 3D à la minority report pour améliorer l’expérience utilisateur.

Linden Lab souhaite proposer des actions / solutions (programmes) pour les pays en développement.

Selon eux la 3D permettra plus de mélange entre les populations de différents pays à l’inverse du web cloisonné par la barrière du langage sur la page.

“The Web has isolated us across language boundaries, but the 3D version of it won’t,” he said. ‘The presence of living people in the space means that we can cross language barriers.”

M Linden (Mark Kingdon ) a précise que Linden Lab travaille sur la pertinence, la fiabilité et facilité d'utilisation du système et de l’interface.

Les axes de développement sur lesquels Linden Lab souhaite se focaliser sont : « live music, shopping, education, and virtual meetings »

Ils annoncent le lancement d’une interface entièrement française d’ici un mois.

Concernant OpenSim : “We’re trying to play a leadership role in those standards,” M Linden said.

La plate-forme s’emploie actuellement à la suppression progressive des pollutions publicitaire (ad farm) sur le mainland

Il y a aussi une sérieuse remise en question et réflexions sur les zones d’aides et d’apprentissage (Help Island)

Last year marketers and many web pundits were buzzing about the potential of Second Life to change everything from education to brand development. Much ink was spilled on the transformative value of 3-D avatars and millions to be made within the Second Life ecosystem. Alas, the buzz didnt last and Second Life receded into relative obscurity (only 500K active users), behind Twitter, Facebook and an onslaught of Web 2.0 services.

In an effort to revive their dwindling fortunes the company has hired digital prognosticator Mark Kingdon to be its new CEO. Mark is a former Pwc consultant who most recently headed up the interactive agency, Organic. Mark will bring a wealth of ad industry relationships and marketing knowledge to the engineering focused company. Does this mean that Second Life will become yet another purveyor of ad network solutions for marketers? Lets hope not.

Nel 2006 proprio Kingdon aveva scritto un pezzo su ClickZ in cui valutava positivamente la creazione di nuovi ambienti virtuali. A suo avviso sono tre le attività fondamentali che chiunque si occupi di business legati alle nuove tecnologie deve attualmente portare avanti.

1. Prendere un ruolo attivo in tutto quello che sta nascendo, da MySpace a Facebook, da Second Life a tutto ciò che il Web 2.0 sta generando. Solo la partecipazione attiva, in sostanza, può permettere alle aziende di capire quali opportunità di business e di marketing si stanno preparando e come sfruttarle al meglio.
2. Investire del denaro in aggiornamenti continui sulle nuove tecnologie e sui nuovi prodotti e servizi che vengono realizzati. Soltanto così è possibile identificare quelli che davvero contengono delle potenzialità di mercato. Alla base di tutto c’è l’apertura mentale, che è l’unica chiave del successo.
3. Effettuare un continuo test delle nuove tecnologie in modo da valutare se possono avere successo e rappresentare delle occasioni per meglio affrontare il mercato. «Rendere il proprio ufficio un posto in cui le persone possono condividere ed esperire le tecnologie di cui si sente continuamente parlare» è una delle strategie che consentono alle imprese di tenersi sempre al passo con i tempi.

In sostanza il Kingdon pensiero è estremamente proattivo e orientato all’innovazione. Lui stesso prima di essere reclutato da Rosedale alla guida di Linden Lab è stato dal 2001 CEO di Organic, una delle prime agenzie Web capaci di cavalcare l’onda del periodo di boom iniziale di Internet nei primi anni Novanta. Negli anni ’90 è stato partner della PricewaterhouseCoopers, grande azienda operante nel settore dei servizi professionali di revisione dei conti. La sua competenza sui nuovi business legati a Internet l’ha portato poi a scrivere regolarmente su ClickZ, uno dei portali informativi americani più importanti tra quelli specializzati nel business e nel marketing legato a Internet e alla new economy.

La scelta di Kingdon dovrebbe portare Linden Lab verso una migliore gestione del prodotto Second Life e di un rinnovamento delle politiche aziendali finora messe in campo. La crescita esponenziale del mondo virtuale e lo sviluppo continuo di nuove tecnologie ha rapidamente trasformato la piattaforma e le tecnologie associate. In questo senso la competenza di Kingdon potrà aiutare Linden Lab a confrontarsi con le nuove sfide imposte da un prodotto – Second life – sempre più complesso da trattare e da valorizzare.

Apparently M has ventured in-world and has sucessfully learned how to be a champion afk'er. A promising start, to be sure.


And so what do I think? I will wait and see, there is so much other stuff going on and changing in world, code wise, etc. I think honestly that any forecasting we might attempt will fall short. This is an entirely new dynamic I suspect, and as always, things won't be dull.

Mark Kingdon joined Organic as CEO in 2001 and has led the company to its current position as a leading digital marketing agency. Prior to Organic, Mark worked for Idealab and provided strategic guidance to emerging companies. Earlier, he was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he led the America's retail and distribution industry practice and managed the PWC and Lybrand merger and was a leader in the e-business practice globally. Mark is a member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and serves as a Webby judge. He's also a regular contributor to Three Minds, Organic's blog. Mark received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a BA in Economics from UCLA.

Mark, or M, who is expected to soon name Kate Linden Agent 005 Linden and Sidewinder will become 006 Linden, with Philip Rosedale becoming 007, which is the same as Chair, murmured the right noises in his interview with Reuters about the failures of big brands in 2007...
