This is some of the best news I have ever heard. You go, Cali!
By STEVE LAWRENCE
SACRAMENTO, Calif

This is some of the best news I have ever heard. You go, Cali!

By STEVE LAWRENCE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California on Friday became the first state to ban trans fats from restaurant food, following several cities and major fast-food chains in erasing the notorious artery-clogger from menus.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that will ban restaurants and other retail food establishments from using oil, margarine and shortening containing trans fats.

In a statement, Schwarzenegger noted that consuming trans fat is linked to coronary heart disease.

"Today we are taking a strong step toward creating a healthier future for California," he said.

Violations could result in fines of $25 to $1,000. Food items sold in their manufacturers' sealed packaging would be exempt.

New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Baltimore and Montgomery County, Md., have ordinances banning trans fats, but California is the first state to adopt such a law covering restaurants, said Amy Winterfeld, a health policy analyst for the National Conference of State Legislatures.

California and Oregon already had laws banning trans fats in meals served at schools, she added.

The legislation signed by Schwarzenegger will take effect Jan. 1, 2010, for oil, shortening and margarine used in spreads or for frying. Restaurants could continue using trans fats to deep-fry yeast dough and in cake batter until Jan. 1, 2011.

Trans fats occur naturally in small amounts in meat and dairy products. Most trans fats are created when vegetable oil is treated with hydrogen to create baked and fried goods with a longer shelf life.

Stephen Joseph, a Tiburon attorney who was a consultant to New York City in developing its ban, said trans fat is a larger health risk than saturated fat because it reduces so-called good cholesterol.

A 2006 review of trans fat studies by the New England Journal of Medicine concluded there was a strong connection between consumption of trans fats and heart disease. Studies also have linked trans fats to diabetes, obesity, infertility in women and some types of cancer.

Trans fats are like cigarettes, with no safe level of consumption, said Jeffrey Luther, a Long Beach doctor who is president of the California Academy of Family Physicians.

He said the California law, "when it finally takes effect, will be a tremendous benefit."

The California Restaurant Association opposed the bill. Spokesman Daniel Conway said the Federal Food and Drug Administration rather than individual states should be developing regulations on trans fat use.

He said, however, that the association has no plans to challenge the law, in part because restaurants already are phasing out trans fats to satisfy customers. Several major fast-food chains have announced that they have eliminated trans fats from their menus or intend to so do in the near future.

"We're confident that California restaurants can meet the mandates of the bill," Conway said.

I can't believe this goober Conway says, "the Federal Food and Drug Administration rather than individual states should be developing regulations on trans fat use." Why should this one chemical be exempt from the US Consitution? If he wants to live in a society where one entity makes all the calls he should go live in Boston circa 1773.

I ran and caught the 6:05 p.m. train this afternoon, which is always a good thing because it means I get home around 7:30 p.m.

As I walked along the platform I noticed that every seat was taken and the train was standing room only. Keep in mind this is a nine-car train with many of the cars being of the double-decker sort.

The train was so packed that passengers were forced to gather in the vestibule as there was no more room left on the cars themselves.

I briefly entertained the idea of skipping out on this ride and catching a later train but decided I ran all the way to the station I may as well squeeze on.

After nestling between a two people and a wall, the train took off making the first couple stops to allow even more people on the train. According to the guy that collects the tickets, (who couldn't do so because of the amount of passengers thus resulting in me wasting six dollars) they are not allowed to tell people they can't board. Basically, it doesn't matter how many people are on the train, if someone wants to get on they have to let them.

We pulled into the Odenton, Md. station and a fair amount of people exited. The much needed elbow room was greatly needed but what boarded the train would be far worse than being so close to someone that you can tell what they had for lunch.

A family boarded with two younger children. The man was clutching a digital camera so I believe he was just visiting the area. The children were great! I bet you were thinking I was going to bitch and complain about the kids crying.

My problem lies with the parents who felt the need to talk to their children as if THEY were the ones learning the english language. The mother kept talking in a high-pitched, baby tone and I could feel the blood pressure of all the people around me (train was still pretty crowded and remained standing room only) gradually increase.

As the train took off, the mother mimicked the sound of the train going, "Chuga, Chuga, Chuga, Chuga, Chuga......CHOOOO CHOOOO!!!!!

My eyes nearly bugged out of my head. Was this women serious? Was she seriously being this obnoxious!

The women did this not once, not twice, but at least six or seven times. Each one as loud and rude as the one before it.

After another stop the family decided to move and find a seat on the train. A women who I had been crammed against and the man who collects the tickets all looked at one another like we just won the lottery.

We simply could not believe a grown-ass women would actually do that on a jammed pack train full of commuters who would kill in order to get home. The women made sly comments about the incident and I'm sure the mother had to hear it. I simply made a gun with my fingers and held it to my head.

The train eventually made it to my station and I exited with the high-pitched voice of the mother ringing in my ears. Sometimes I don't know what is worse, unreliable trains or rude people.

I could really write a book on my friend Mark.

I could tell and share all the ups and downs but more than anything, I want to share a video I made about him and how we communicate.

Mark has ALS and while it may have affected many parts of his life, it has not affected his ability to think, to be receptive to touch, to care - he is all there.

I love Mark, dearly and thanks to the magic of the Internet, you tube, the Erica Eye Gaze System and Dyna Vox, Mark can still communicate though he can't speak or move his arms or legs.

Most of what I want to say is recorded in two you tube videos - only one has been posted so far due to a PC issue but I will get part two up soon.

For now, in my own voice, here is the video I made about ALS. I made it outside as Mark loves the outdoors - I just didn't get the lighting right or prepare for mosquitoes. And the editing is, well, non-existent, I just kept talking and got this thing posted as soon as I could.

I just want everyone to know that ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease" isn't an end to life - Mark is living it the best he can and I am grateful to google and google filters for providing a free service that I can personalize to make communicating with Mark easier.

And here is the first, very raw part........

When I scheduled our tickets, we did not have housing yet. I called the school back in February to ask about married housing and they told me I would need to go on a wait list. All I know about wait lists is, you better have a plan B.

So, since I did not hear from SGU about the housing, I scheduled to arrive in Grenada 2 weeks before school started to get all situated. Maybe it was a more time than I need, but hey I am moving to a different country, the more time to get acclimated the better.

Ironically, I hear that we got married housing 2 days after the flight was set up.

Since the tickets were booked with the help of my father's amex points, I found it hard to switch the flight to a later date. So instead, I looked for arrangements to go down early and stay in a vacation home. Grenada is not a bad place to vacation.

I actually found on valueMD a friend who will also be arriving to Grenada early.

Peek-a-boo!!! Back to me again, I’m really pleased to provide you useful various information

Peek-a-boo!!! Back to me again, I'm really pleased to provide you useful various information about many aspects. I'm sure most of us really appreciate our age of life and don't want to die just because a disease. Life is so precious and it's a must to taking care of our health. To keep our age of life longer, we must give full take care on healthiness, because disease could short our life without any compromise. This occasion I would like to share about life extension, I'm talking about PATH Medical, they are located in 304 the center of New York City. What is PATH Medical? Actually PATH is a short of the Place for Achieving Total Health. This site is under maintained of Eric Braverman, MD, founder of path medical. The goal of this service is to find our aging parts and repair them, to keep us healthy, vital and going full-speed well into middle-age and beyond. Actually as long as my life, I ever heard about such life extension in 2005 on TV, this medical located on UK and I don't know precisely the address. They do efforts to make-alive a dead person who had been dead for several hours, but I don't know about the update of this medical now.

I will show you more about life extension offered by Dr. Eric Braverman, MD. It is particularly supposed for brain memory attention and cognitive ability as well as life span. The technique is to scan brain maps, computerized tests of attention memory type, temperament, and personality. They also do head to toe ultrasound backed with DEXA scans of body fat, as well as bone density and in some cases, CT IE angiograms, MRIs, and PET scans. These scans find virtually every aging or defective part of our body.

You see, We are only as young as are oldest part and all of us have dying or defective parts; typically 3 to 5 are found in 18 year olds and 15 to 20 in 75 yr olds. Repair can lead us to be functionally and internally 30-40 years old for 60 years! Life spans less than 100 years old will be viewed as a tragedy; there are no russert like premature deaths with proper scans. No surprise deaths occur and productive life expansion will raise medicare gradually to 80, then to 90, saving us from bankruptcy. Techniques to repair and reverse the hidden silent diseases that kill us and destroy are productive and happy years are a delicate balance of creative new users of conventional medicines to 20+ Bioidentical hormones, nutrients, diet, lifestyle, relationships, and retesting to verify the fix has occurred to the early often silent deteriorations of aging and dying.

Wow, what an incredible and complete process!!! Well, beside life extension and breaking the aging code information, Dr. Eric also developed Total Health Nutritiens (THN) clinic which offer varous kind of dietary supplements such as brain cream, weightloss package, anti oxidants, eye health, Men's health, Women's health, vitamins, sleep formula and much more at competitive prices. :D

I think we should try Path Medical also the THN products... So, be younger and healtier now! :)

Good evening and praise the Lord everyone,

Good evening and praise the Lord everyone,

I was just talking with sister Katrece from In His Image Prophetic Dance ministry in MD. We were talking about the vision of God for this event. She mentioned that I should write down the vision that God gave me and that she would do the same. And God reminded me that this isn't about us. He didn't give me this vision for it to be about an 'anniversary'. It's not about dancing or shouting. This is to be about Him. This call is about His salvation. It's about worshiping Him in spirit and in truth. Unfortunately, there are some of us that do not understand the seriousness of this walk nor the responsibility of this gift. My Utmost for His Highest is a cry of submission, cleansing and purity. It's a cry - a shout to the Lord, that yes I give my all to you Lord. You are the sovereign King. My life is for your Glory. I will trust you Lord; not my will but thy Will be done Lord. Use me according to your divine purpose.

The time is now. The time to trust God is now. The time to believe Him is now. The time to run to Him is now.

We don't have the luxury -- nor the right! -- to try to guess when the Lord will descend from heaven with the sound of the trump. We can't be foolishly looking for 'signs' just so that we can do what we want and then switch sides at the end. It's not going to be that way. Oh and I'm sorry to say but dancing will not get any of us into heaven.

"Be ye holy, for I am holy"

I am not perfect. Can I have that as my disclaimer? But I purposely choose to work towards His perfection.

"Lord reveal the areas of our lives that we have not given completely to you. Give us the courage to stand for you without wavering. I pray for all of us who are called by Your name. Lord Jesus, we need you! Help me to be who you ordained me to be. Help me to put you first; to listen and obey as you lead me each day. Prepare me to respond only as you would have me as I confront the events of the day. Take over -- Move by your precious Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen."

The headline may sound like I’m grousing, but I’m not. I don’t think that the Town

The headline may sound like I'm grousing, but I'm not. I don't think that the Town of St. Michaels is planning to erect a statue in honor of its most famous son (at least so far as I know).

Anyways, the Chicago White Sox unveiled a statue of Harold Baines at U.S. Cellular Field yesterday before the Royals-White Sox game. The local newspaper had the story on the front page of yesterday's edition, but only had the following picture in the paper today:

[caption id="attachment_200" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Harold with his statue (Photo Credit: AP)"][/caption]

Congratulations to Harold Baines and his family on what surely is a wonderful honor. Of course, once Harold's number was retired (12 years before he finally actually retired), he was destined to get a statue. It speaks well of him that the owner of the White Sox, Jerry Reinsdorf, and the current manager of the White Sox, Ozzie Guillen, had nothing but kind words for Baines. Not just for his ability on the field, but for his attitude, professionalism and kindness off it. It was also reported that several of his former teammates were also on hand for the dedication. And Roland Hemond, who also once worked for the Orioles, was also there; he signed Harold to his first professional contract.

Knowing Harold, the hardest part had to be speaking a few words to the assembled throng. And thanks to DirecTV's Sports Pack, I was able to see some of the ceremony on television right from home. I even DVR'd it for my mom so that she can see it. Nothing like pride in one of your hometown's own.

[caption id="attachment_202" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Harold at the podium (Photo Credit: AP)"][/caption]

While Harold also did stints with the Orioles, A's, Rangers, and Indians, it was with the White Sox where he came to fame and became a hero to their fans. And while he did well in his several stints with the O's, there is virtually no chance that they would erect a statue in his honor, even though he is a Maryland product. That discussion probably begins and ends with Cal Ripken.

Here's to Harold Baines, St. Michaels' own Hall of Famer (even if he never goes to the real Hall in Cooperstown), he'll be a hall on famer to us.

Now that I've had a few days to immerse myself in pigskin frivolity at the ACC football kickoff it's time for me to take a stab at my preseason picks.

Let me say that I haven't gone through the spin of the coaches or sports information directors. What I have done is talk with my fellow journalists (those insider tidbits are gems) and I've watched and listened to the players. More often than not their comments tell you more about a program than their coach can or will.

Let's start with the Atlantic Division.

The past has made many fans and especially sportswriters nervous about selecting Clemson as the top dog. Can you blame any of them? The Tigers certainly haven't done much to deserve our faith over the past few years.

Again it is all about the players.Theirs is a quiet calm air of confidence and it speaks volumes. Clemson is a team that is loaded to the gills with monumental talent. The Tigers have offensive weaponry that rivals U. S. Special Forces.
Look for Clemson to take the Atlantic Division, but not without some pressure from Florida State and Wake Forest.

Here are my picks for the ACC Atlantic Divison.
Clemson
Florida State
Wake Forest
Maryland
North Carolina State
Boston College

A quick run down of the teams.

Florida State - The Jimbo Fisher era begins (as far as I'm concerned he is now the head coach). There is a new mindset in Tallahassee. They are no longer the cocky "everyone else has to beat us" group they once were. This has allowed the 'Noles to start taking one game at a time and approach each matchup with something to prove. This makes for a dangerous team, perhaps one with a chip on their shoulder.

Wake Forest - Jim Grobe as Father Knows Best. Grobe's approach to coaching includes life skills and self pride. It is helping build a winning program. The superb application of redshirting players is paying off. The hardest thing that the Demon Deacons will deal with is recruitment. The percentages are just not with them. It is tough to compete with the much larger schools found in the conference.

Maryland -"The Fridge" has handed over the offensive game and is beginning to have some excellent recruiting success. This is a team that can and will sneak up on you. I don't see it being consistent enough to go much furter this year but things should come together in '09 and '10. A smaller, but quicker team will give opponents fits as will a new defensive look.

North Carolina State - Tom O'Brien continues to settle in. New coaches, new plays and the transition to a solid program progresses. Is the stew ready for consumption? Not quite yet. O'Brien and company must begin the re-building process which includes recruits that buy into his way of doing things.

Boston College - "Jags" (almost sounds like a TV show) is a sharp guy. Don't forget though that he needs to build "his program" so the loss column may be heavier for a season or two. Fans are beginning to show "the love" to the Eagles.

The one thing that Doc Walker points out on this week's podcast is this division's parity. No truer words have been spoken. From top to bottom this is the strong side of the ACC this season.
Now a look at the not-so-strong side - the Coastal Division.

I wasn't completely sold on Virginia Tech taking the division this year. After all they've lost mucho (but not Macho) talent.

The Hokies have two diamonds that often outweigh other factors. Frank Beamer and Bud Foster. Let's not forget that even though VT has lost a lot of their portfolio there were numerous stars in the making sitting on the sideline. You'll be introduced to them this season as they walk away from opponents they've left their mark on.

Here are my picks for the Coastal Division.
Virginia Tech
North Carolina
Georgia Tech
Virginia
Duke
Miami

A quick run-down of the teams.

North Carolina - Butch Davis has started something that fans love - winning. He is definitely in the process of rebuilding. The coaches and players are connecting and that is a plus. There is more confidence among both groups now that they realize that Tar Heels can have a winning tradition. Look for a strong comeback on the QB side as the season progresses.

Georgia Tech - Paul Johnson is somewhat miffed over all we numbskulls continually asking about his "new offense". Okay, so I admit we are a slow lot. The Ramblin Wreck is getting ready to take over the Atlanta Journal-Constitution sports pages. Anything beats another 'Dawgs story. Oh, let's not forget a new look on defense as well. Watch out Georgia.

Virginia - Al Groh was dealt a nice hand at the end of last year and then suddenly found himself playing Old Maid instead of Five Stud Poker. Groh is Dr. Frankenstein and is building a brand new monster. It may be like the one in the movie, a bit weak minded but with plenty of good intentions.

Duke - Coach Cutcliffe has done something unheard of in the history of Duke. He has Carolina fans rooting for his success(they won't openly admit it). The school, alumni and fans want a winning program and apparently they are on a fast-track to that goal. Can it be done over-night? The answer is no but three to four wins is very likely and that beats what they've had in the past.

Miami - Randy Shannon is in an unenviable position. A top-rated football program that has fallen from grace is now in his hands and he must rebuild quickly. Okay fans hear this: he inherited a wreck. He needs to untangle the twisted mess with the jaws of life. Tweaked O, D and lots of young guys are great steps. It will be another year or two before the Phoenix rises.

That's how I see the ACC unfolding and, quite honestly, I'm ready for kickoff already. That means I'm looking for my first invite to a tailgate party.

Only streamed through Hulu at Dr. Horrible through July 20th. Also available for download at iTunes through July 29th. A DVD with extras is highly anticipated at some point after that.

This was an experiment devised by Whedon, two of his brothers, a writer friend of theirs, and countless others who contributed, during the fairly recent WGA strike. The artists on this project basically worked for free, with Joss Whedon and a few others ponying up the funds.

Dr. Horrible is the tale of a mad scientist (Neil Patrick Harris), would-be villain who wants with his entire being to be part of the Evil League of Evil, run by an Uber-Villain Overlord named Bad Horse. Why? He's in love with a girl named Penny, who he's afraid to talk to but wants to rule the world with. She in turn falls for a big lug with half a brain called Captain Hammer. Hammer and Dr. H have a hate-hate relationship, mostly because Hammer keeps giving him beatings and messing up his plans for world domination.

Did I mention it's a musical? The whole thing is brilliantly devised, archetypes of villains and heroes turned on their head, a sweet young thing who is their innocent young catalyst for change, and a tuneful score which harks to musical theatre influences ... some Bernstein, some Schwartz, with emphasis on Sondheim. Whedon and his co-writers obviously love language and know how to use it to warp the woof of an oft-told tale; good vs. evil. But just who is good and who is evil? And for whom will you weep when the story is through?

Write and tell me. I'd like to know what you thought.

On the surface, looking at photos, reading synopses here and there, you might be fooled that this is just a trifle, a silly confection. Those unfamiliar with Whedon's previous artistic outings are in for a surprise. The ending is being hotly debated even as I write this. There's a lot for everyone here; musical enthusiasts to comic-book fans, to dramaturgs.

Watch how well the tone shifts from Act to Act, with the music supporting all the action. Act I is the honeymoon, Act II the divorce, and Act II "the great black pit" in more ways than one.

Neil Patrick Harris is a star - if that wasn't already clear. His singing and acting runs the gamut from sweetly hopeful, to sarcastic, to morose, to black outrage and despair. If Act III doesn't prove that you can become hollowed out through your own mistaken desires, nothing will.

Nathan Fillion plays the "Hero," Dr. Hammer. I don't want to give too much away if you haven't seen it yet, but let's just say his performance is the perfect capital P for pompous. I'm not surprised he delivers on the singing - a very talented man who is not afraid to spoof his own image as someone who is adored, but in a totally obnoxious way. He's equal parts lecherous Judge Turpin from Sweeney Todd and Judd Frye from Oklahoma. Not easy to pull off.

Felicia Day (who has her own show The Guild on the Internet Highway) plays Penny, the innocent ingenue who tries to stay positive in a wicked, bad world. Tries to make a difference despite indifference. Day is competent, sweet and smart in a role that doesn't give her much to do. It felt as though she really had to pull back her own personality to make it fit within the confines of a role that doesn't change or grow. But she is there for a definite purpose.

How we could be taken on this journey in such a short series. I'm a believer that all things are possible. Especially when there's Whedons involved.

Take the Journey ... now.

Today I went to get my haircut at the Thomas Scott Salon & Spa. I haven't gotten my hair cut since November-ish so today was the opportune time to try this place. First impression walking in was that it was a very neat place, and everything had it's place. The only thing that really threw me off was that there was a table that had a neon sign on it that said 25% off select hair styling tools! I looked at it because it was a loud offensive sign that was very close to unsightly. Anyways, I got checked in and I was called for my haircut a few minutes later. Note: they are very prompt. The shampoo girl was nice and friendly and cheerful. She did not do anything remotely massage-esque. She just shampooed and conditioned my hair and she was done. That kind-of peeved me. >.< I got my hair cut with the fabulous Kasey, who does a wonderful job cutting and styling my hair every time. (She's been my stylist for about a year and a half now; she used to work at New York New York Hair Salon.) She's a bit rough with me, I do get buffeted around a bit while she's cutting and styling, but she's really good at what she does and she's a wonderful person to talk with. Note: book Kasey. She's the best. Anyways, there seems to be no 'dress code' there. Also the tipping system is a bit weird, and you have to put your tip in a little envelope?! Wtf? They don't allow you to add tip to your credit cards either, which is also a little weird.

Bottom Line: A great place to go for a cut and blow-out. Prices are also on the steeper side for me. They charge more for people with longer hair. My haircut was about 50$-ish, but can range anywhere from 34$-50$+.

Chong Yet Yin, located in Mt. Airy MD, is a local chinese restaurants that many locals frequent. My review is a bit mixed, as it seems. The dine in service is not of great quality, the food is so-so, and the atmosphere is.... Lacking. Chong Yet Yin does a great deal of carry-out, and I'm not surprised. I've eaten there quite a few times myself. The food itself is alright, but not completely and totally delicious. It's a great place to go for just a nice meal that you don't have to make yourself ;) I have dined at some of the finer chinese restaurants myself, and I find Chong Yet Yin severely lacking, but it's ok if your standards aren't that high. Many people rave about how good the food is. I personally want to know what kind of chinese food they've eaten in the past, but I'll keep my opinions about the culinary challenged to myself :). It's definitely a noteworthy place if you're on the run and want something quick and somewhat tasty. The calorie content? I don't even want to know, but let's say that their stuff is drenched in oils and all manor of unsavory things; however fat gives flavor no?

Bottom Line: A great place if you can deal with somewhat lacking chinese food and the almost horrid service. The menu itself is 'traditional' american-chinese food, and the prices are a little on the expensive side for what you're getting, but not a bad place to visit if you're in the mood for chinese.

An especially special friend of mine spoke with me about the uselessness of primary care physicians.

An especially special friend of mine spoke with me about the uselessness of primary care physicians. And almost had me, but something came to mind when I read an article in the July 2, 2008 edition of the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) by Dr. Michael Stillman. My friend presented me with the idea that general care physicians are not always very knowledgable about ailments or certain health problems that specialists would know. I had a personal experience that comes under this category. However, when the patient of a primary care physician is ill or injured, the primary care physician will know the patient well. One of the most important aspects of health care that is commonly overlooked is knowing the patient. Often such luxury is not possible with the busy schedule of doctors, or the lack of need to see certain doctors. Nonetheless, it can influence care dramatically. Dr. Stillman gave an example in his article where the medications of a patient had been changed to a more expensive regimen without his knowledge. The prescribing doctor would not have know that the patient could never afford those medications, but Dr. Stillman knew and prescribed the original, less-costly, and equally effective regimen. A number of other issues come up as well when identifying the importance of primary care physicians. When making an important medical decision, trust between a patient and the doctor becomes essential. Patients, even if are under the care of a specialist may want to consult a phyiscian with whom they are familiar before making an important decision. Primary Care doctors may not necessarily save lifes, but they can certian help people maintain the highest quality of life possible. So with the greatest level of respect possible, I disagree with my friend [I will convince her I am right, and if she happens to read this before I try the art of persuasion...] (citation: JAMA July 2, 2008 p.21-22).

Mealey's, located in New Market, is an excellent place to dine if you're looking for a romantic place to take someone. It doesn't strike me as a family restaurant because of the decor and the elegant look of the dining room. They are very accomadating to children though. They give your child books and coloring books, and they also have a children's menu. The attire is dressy-casual, but I've seen people in there with jeans and t-shirts. My family and I went there one night for a nice dinner. The food on the menu is on the expensive side, but it's very good food. I had the Stuffed Rainbow Trout that was stuffed with crab meat and with brie cheese and shrimp on top. It was absolutely delicious and I ate everything off of my plate. There was also some seasonal vegetables with butter and garlic mashed potatoes. This was an EXCELLENT dinner and my family enjoyed it as well. Their crab cakes are specatular as well.

Bottom Line: A good place to dine if you can swallow their more expensive prices, but you are getting what you pay for, which is excellent food.

This is my first review on this blog What a milestone xD. New York New York Hair Salon and Day Spa

This is my first review on this blog :) What a milestone xD. New York New York Hair Salon and Day Spa is located on 808 Toll House Avenue in Frederick, MD. Their website is www.nynyhair.com My step-mother and I have been frequenting this salon for quite a few years. In her case, about 10 years, and my case about 3. This salon has very experienced professionals working there, and you can always expect the best from them. The products they use on peoples' hair are fantastic and smell wonderful. They also sell the products they use. I've had quite a few hair stylists over the years, but I found mine at NYNY. NYNY used to be a well run facility and you could always expect quality from them. However, over the years, their manager Sharon left, the quality has gone down somewhat. It is not as well run as it used to be, and you can expect them to be running late or to be asked to reschedule. This is not always the case, but it is quite often. The prices are steep, about 50$ for a wash, haircut, and style and upwards of 60-70$ for an updo. However, they use Paul Mitchelle products, so this might be expected.

Bottom Line: A great place to frequent if you can deal with their lack of organization.

I've also had the pleasure of getting a facial there, and I can say that their estheticians are wonderful. I had Jacqueline for my facial, and she's a wonderful and bubbly person. It was a great experience, and I would definitely go there again for facials. In fact, I'm getting another one soon ;) I've been told the other lady that works there, Abby, isn't as good. I've never had her, so I wouldn't know. They use Dermalogica products and they have a wonderful facility, and it is well equipped to facilitate relaxation.

A psychiatrist was conducting a group therapy session with four youngmothers and their small children. 'You all have obsessions,' he observed.

To the first mother he said, 'You are obsessed with eating. You've even named your daughter Candy.

He turned to the second Mom, 'Your obsession is with money. Again, it manifests itself in your child's name, Penny.'

He turns to the third Mom. 'Your obsession is alcohol. This too manifests itself in your child's name, Brandy'

At this point, the fourth mother gets up, takes her little boy by the hand and whispers. 'Come on, Dick, we're leaving.'

Dear Commissioners,
In reference to the proposed rezoning request of 149+- acres known

July 8, 2008

Dear Commissioners,

In reference to the proposed rezoning request of 149+- acres known as the Jenkins Property, Public Hearing: Bill #2008-11 ZMA – Jenkins Property (Chaney), it is my opinion, the proposed rezoning will adversely influence living conditions and or property values at least within a 5 mile radius of the parcel; the proposed change will excessively increase traffic congestion or otherwise negatively affect public safety; the proposed change is speculative and does not have a valid and specific intent and purpose; there are substantial reasons why the property can be used in accordance with its existing zoning; there is convincing demonstration that all uses allowed under the current zoning would be appropriate in the neighborhood and that the character of the neighborhood will not be materially and adversely effected by denying the rezone.

However, the proposed rezoning will have a negative effect on the nature of the community, transitioning it from a residential support district; and inviting industrial operations in to what the County's Comprehensive Plan has previously seen fit to plan for the long range as residential support commercial.

The opinion of rezoning for mistake in original zoning and change in neighborhood character should be further backed by a demonstrated public need and documentation justifying the reason for rezoning. The examples should be clear and the evidence convincing. I agree with the Maryland Department of Planning and the general opinion the rezoned parcel would be unrelated and incompatible with adjacent parcels.

I don't think the case by Mr. Chaney has been made and I further believe if the rezone is approved, the decision by you will be capricious and arbitrary. "Change in neighborhood character" is not demonstrated by the introduction of a motorcycle dealership, as suggested by Mr. Chaney. That property was appropriately zoned and not an affront to the character of the neighborhood or the Hughesville Revitalization Plan that residents have come to rely on.

I am also concerned about unintended consequences. Considering Mr. Chaney's stated desires of subdividing and reselling parcels to fund "dreams" is commendable, but speculative at best. No one can control the Heavy Industrial market or any market for that matter or alter market forces. What if Mr. Chaney's stated desire and "dreams" aren't feasible? Short-sighted decisions may cause unintended consequences of broad applications for specific solutions and will require the mitigation of environmental and social impact of the Heavy Industrial uses.

When considering and applying Maryland's four straightforward Smart Growth Goals in your decision making process the answer to Mr. Chaney is a reverberating No:

Support existing communities by targeting resources to support development in areas where infrastructure exists.

Save our most valuable natural resources before they are forever lost.

Save taxpayers from the high cost of building infrastructure to serve development that has spread far from our traditional population centers.

Provide Marylanders with a high quality of life, whether they choose to live in a rural community, suburb, small town, or city.

Applying the same four goals and considering the Heavy Industrial business cluster that already exists in the Billingsley Road Industrial corridor and your answer is clearly yes.

The rezoning is unsupported by any rational basis related to promotion of public health, safety, morals, or general welfare. Should the "dreams" of numerous residents to live in a peaceable community be pushed aside for gravel washing plants, aggregate plants, cement plants, machine repair shops, welding shops, bulk storage of petroleum and their byproducts, warehouses, operations involving manufacturing, processing, assembly, transportation and storage of heavy industrial materials and or equipment and the increased dust, pollutants and negative impact on traffic that they bring?

Furthermore, approval would single the parcel out for special or privileged treatment and may even be spot zoning. The approval would not be in the publics best interest and subjectively benefits Mr. Chaney. Additionally, the rezoning would carve an unrelated and incompatible island and would be inconsistent with the Hughesville Revitalization Plan, Charles County's Comprehensive Plan, the State's Smart Growth Initiative and sound planning principles.

Sincerely,

Craig Barrett
