Psalm 117 has the distinction of being the shortest chapter in the Bible and Psalm 119 is the longe

Psalm 117 has the distinction of being the shortest chapter in the Bible and Psalm 119 is the longest. In Romans 15:11, Paul quotes from a portion of Psalm 117 to show that even the Gentiles share in the Old Testament promises given to the patriarchs. Psalm 119 is an amazing acrostic of twenty-two stanzas, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Additionally, the eight lines of each stanza begin with the same Hebrew letter. What follows is both Psalms, in their entirety, for your consideration and meditation.

PSALM 117

Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!

PSALM 119

ALEPH

Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be dept diligently. Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!

BETH

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

GIMEL

Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word. I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me! My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times. You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments. Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies. Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.

DALETH

My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. I cling to your testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame! I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!

HE

Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!

WAW

Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise; then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules. I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.

ZAYIN

Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life. The insolent utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from your law. When I think of your rules from of old, I take comfort, O LORD. Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake your law. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning. I remember your name in the night, O LORD, and keep your law. This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept your precepts.

HETH

The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to yor promise. When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules. I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts. The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!

TETH

You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word. Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word. You are good and do good; teach me your statutes. The insolent smear me with lies, but with my whole heart I keep your precepts; their heart is unfeeling like fat, but I delight in your law. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

YODH

Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice, because I have hoped in your word. I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant. Let your mercy come to me; that I may live; for your law is my delight. Let the insolent be put to shame, because they have wronged me with falsehood, as for me, I will meditate on your precepts. Let those who fear you turn to me, that they may know your testimonies. May my heart be blameless in your statutes, that I may not be put to shame!

KAPH

My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word. My eyes long for your promise; I ask, When will you comfort me? For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, yet I have not forgotten your statutes. How long must your servant endure? When will you judge those who persecute me? The insolent have dug pitfalls for me; they do not live according to your law. All your commandments are sure; they persecute me with falsehood; help me! They have almost made an end of me on earth, but I have not forsaken your precepts. In your steadfast love give me life, that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

LAMEDH

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast. By your appointment they stand this day, for all things are your servants. If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life. I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts. The wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your testimonies. I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

MEM

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.

NUN

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules. I am severely afflicted; give me life, O LORD, according to your word! Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O LORD, and teach me your rules. I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law. The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts. Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end.

SAMEKH

I hate the double-minded, but I love your law. You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God. Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope! Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually! You spurn all who go astray from your statutes, for their cunning is in vain. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross, therefore I love your testimonies. My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments.

AYIN

I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me. My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes. I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies! It is time for the LORD to act, for your law has been broken Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold. Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way.

PE

Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments. Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. Redeem me from man's oppression, that I may keep your precepts. Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.

TSADHE

Righteous are you, O LORD, and right are your rules. You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness. My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.

QOPH

With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes. I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life. They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law. But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.

RESH

Look on my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget your law. Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise! Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. Great is your mercy, O LORD; give me life according to your rules. Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies. I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands. Consider how I love your precepts! Give me life according to your steadfast love. The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

SIN and SHIN

Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules. Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. I hope for your salvation, O LORD, and I do your commandments. My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly. I keep your precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before you.

TAW

Let my cry come before you, O LORD; give me understanding according to your word! Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word. My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right. Let your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts. I long for your salvation, O LORD, and your law is my delight. Let my soul live and praise you, and let your rules help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.

I'd gotten a snack for Megan after school and she was sitting at the kitchen island. She's one of those kids who doesn't volunteer much about her day, which I'm used to because she's been that way ever since she could talk. Despite myself, I do occasionally engage in bouts of teeth-pulling, because this whole kindergarten thing is new for me too, after all. But generally I just take what small tidbits come my way, and limit post-school debriefing to the status of her lunch consumption.

So it had been quiet in the kitchen for a few minutes when she paused between apple bites and said, "Mom, listen to this:

"Peaches are juicy

Plums are sweet

Just what everybody likes to eat!"

So I said, "Oh, sweetie, that's a great poem. Did you do that in school today?"

"Nope. Just made it up."

Well now. Maybe Mrs. Dickinson didn't know much about Emily's day at school either.

The lunches I pack are, if anything, robustly healthy and not even close to “trash” by a

The lunches I pack are, if anything, robustly healthy and not even close to "trash" by any known nutritional standard. I employ reusable containers and ziplocs that are to come home, of course, for re-use. So when Megan today, after her fourth day of kindergarten, broke down in tears and begged me not to send Any More Trash in her lunch, I was out-and-out flummoxed.

After putting my best Faber/Mazlish listening skills to work, I successfully determined the following:

Apparently there are Rules about Trash From Your Lunch regulating its disposal. It is to be Thrown Away (and not sent home). And the tricky piece is she's not quite sure exactly how she is supposed to time her deposit in the trashcan, which is wheeled about from table to table in the Large and Noisy and Confusing and thus dreaded Cafeteria, by an unfamiliar Trash Lady. She must deposit it, this she knows. But what if she's not done yet when it is wheeled by? Will it come back? When? Before she must return to her classroom? What if it doesn't???? Angst galore.

But since I'd sent nothing packaged today, not even a cheese stick, after more appropriate parental soothings, I queried. "But sweetie, I don't understand. You didn't have any trash in your lunch today."

"YES, I DID. The SALT." A torrent of tears afresh accompanies this proclamation.

Oh. Ah. Yes. That would be the half-inch-square salt packet pilfered from takeout for her hard-boiled egg.

When I murmured that maybe she could just slip that into the outer pocket of her new lunch bag, she sat bolt upright. "But when they ASK if I have any trash, I can't say NO when I DO!!! That wouldn't be RIGHT!"

She comes by it honest, born to two parents who are themselves dyed-in-the-wool rule-followers. Oh, we might flout a few now and again, here in our adult years (even the MPM will, as his conscience dictates), but it's a hard-fought rebellion against our innate tendencies.

It's going to be a long year. Ya think?

Today the following on Googles official blog http://googleblog.blogspot.com :

At Google, we have a saying: “launch early and iterate.” While this approach is usually limited to our engineers, it apparently applies to our mailroom as well! As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit "send" a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome. As we believe in access to information for everyone, we've now made the comic publicly available -- you can find it here. We will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries.

So why are we launching Google Chrome? Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web.

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends -- all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff -- the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

This is just the beginning -- Google Chrome is far from done. We're releasing this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and will continue to make it even faster and more robust.

We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others -- and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

The web gets better with more options and innovation. Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the web even better.

So check in again tomorrow to try Google Chrome for yourself. We'll post an update here as soon as it's ready.

Update @ 3:30 PM: We've added a link to our comic book explaining Google Chrome.

So what is next?

On the final day of this year’s G8 Summit in Hokkaido Toyako, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukud

On the final day of this year’s G8 Summit in Hokkaido Toyako, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda welcomed an additional eight leaders for a working lunch, under the auspices of the Major Economies Meeting (MEM) on Energy Security and Climate Change. This included the countries engaged in the Heiligendamm Process, China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico, plus Australia, Indonesia and South Korea. The outputs from this meeting, however, are likely to be soon forgotten or at best ignored.

Bad Policy

The showcasing of Fukuda’s much hyped “Cool Earth” climate policy ensured that energy security – although in the meeting’s title – would not get time on this year’s agenda. The G8 has dealt with energy only in narrow, self-interested ways. One of its founding motivations was to collectively respond to the Oil Crisis of the mid-1970s and again in the early-1980s with the fall of the Shah of Iran in the interests of stabilizing their national economies. In the modern context, it has been Russia and Canada that have put energy on the agenda, however, both have done so to secure new oil contracts among the rich club. This dynamic played out once more at MEM, as the urgency of energy policy was crowded out by the popularity of climate policy.

Cool Earth – also known as the “50/50” strategy – advances that the G8 should cut emissions by 50% by 2050. However, as frequently identified, this proposal is severely flawed as it sets no start-date, no interim targets, no reporting mechanism, and no penalties for noncompliance. With a target date so far in the future, most of the G8 leaders are not likely to be alive in 2050 and certainly decades out of office. This initiative has proven that leader-driven climate policy is much more about image than substance. The policy implications of Cool Earth are few and far between, leaving most of the responsibility with the private sector to develop and implement new technologies while placing the much of the onus of reductions and energy efficiency on the MEM developing countries.

Growing Divisions

While many G8-watchers have made a persuasive argument for climate change as a functional case for G8 membership reform, the MEM certainly does not fill this role. While it brings a number of leaders from important countries into the G8 process, it does not provide a suitable forum to actively engage emerging powers in a two-way dialogue. At Toyako, the MEM took place as a "working lunch", where prime minister Fukuda held court, taking up most of the session with an overly formal speech on Cool Earth. Any actual dialogue in the room was not going to change the wording of the declaration as all discussions took place pre-summit between officials. Even so, Fukuda failed to bring the full compliment of the MEM on-board.

Divisions between the G8 and its Heiligendamm Process partners - now calling themselves the "G5" - had been present before the summit, but at Toyako they got pushed into the public sphere. The G5 leaders met separately in Sapporo a day before the MEM to discuss issues of mutual interest and delivered a joint G5 Political Declaration and press conference, responding to the G8's declarations on the world economy, climate change and food security. When it came to climate, the G5 were particularly pointed, shifting the onus of emissions reductions squarely on the G8, claiming that they are the states most responsible for today's poor climate conditions. Instead of Japan's 50/50 strategy, the G5 called for 80-95% CO2 reductions below 1990 levels by 2050 with mid-term targets of 25-40% reductions by 2020.

These short paragraphs on climate change advanced a much more progressive strategy to combatting climate change, while also setting appropriate measures for developing countries. Paragraph 18 of the declaration reads;

We, on our part, are committed to undertaking nationally appropriate mitigation and adaptation actions which also support sustainable development. We would increase the depth and range of these actions supported and enabled by financing, technology and capacity-building with a view to achieving a deviation from business-as-usual.

While paragraph 21 welcomed the proposals of China (for an ODA-type financing structure for climate initiatives, 0.5% of GDP) and of Mexico (for the establishment of a World Climate Change Fund). The G5 showed a maturity in the way it addressed climate change and accordingly none of the G5 leaders supported Japan's MEM declaration.

Poor Leadership

Although often considered a “steering committee” for the world, when it comes to climate change, the G8 faces great opposition. Looking ahead to the UNFCCC’s 2009 meeting in Copenhagen where a post-Kyoto agenda to engage developing countries will be discussed, the G8 will likely be urged by the vast majority of states to share the bulk of emissions reductions. Is this unreasonable? No, quite the opposite. Will this be accomplished? Again, no, the G8 perceive mandated emissions reductions as a threat to economic sustainability.

Following the G5's ground-breaking meeting in Sapporo, with their declared "consolidation of bilateral interests", it is likely that in upcoming climate change discussions (Poznan 2008; Copenhagen 2009) a new form of South-South cooperation may develop. G5 leadership among the G77 bloc of developing countries is not unlikely, having roots in the IBSA Forum, G20-Trade, and the BRICs foreign ministers meetings. The climate agenda outlined in their Sapporo declaration will likely gain traction among the G77; a group that will help dictate the terms of a post-Kyoto framework.

The MEM will soon be a distant memory, where the impractical and inadequate strategies advanced by out-going leaders will be eclipsed by new priorities of new leaders. However, what the MEM has done is lowered expectations of action on climate by the world's wealthiest states, stalled any serious activity towards addressing the world's pressing climate crisis, and has solidified political support among the leading developing countries.

That the next day

"Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens."

Carl Jung

That the next day my experience was categorically reduced to "neat" by my fellow Butterfly Tribe members made my experience all the more poignant. Happy thoughts of Peace and Love sprinkled with lots of warm hugs and nurturing terms of endearment is indeed a pleasant reality, but, for me at least, can only go so far. There's hard work to be done here and wherever there is resistance to look beyond the feel-good stuff, there can only fester a pit of stagnation.

My skin crawled with discomfort. I was in the dawning throws of the experiment I'd launched, immersed in a virtual paradise doing what I'd long dreamed of doing, and now I wanted out. It reminded me of the time I'd let myself get talked into a last minute white water rafting trip down the Umpqua river with my then-husband's teenage cousin at the helm. I hadn't realized how many things I'd overlooked to get to that point until the roar of the approaching run was deafening. No matter how much I insisted that my adventure would stop there and I was getting out of the raft - nothing could really be done about it.

I'd woken-up more awake than I'd been in a good long while. Maybe more awake then I'd yet been in my life. My sudden incongruence to my surroundings felt deafening. For the sake of gathering this Community, I'd overlooked many of the very concepts that drove my passion for Intentional Community in the first place. For example, this majority believed in anarchy and undefined, completely fluid gatherings, leaving me entirely alone in passion for dynamic organizations that mimicked the processes of Nature and structural forms that were perfect mirrors of the function they gave form to. I was branded "negative" anytime I'd sought to spell out the certain doom of a collective money pot that was maintained by individual whim, or the trouble with a pantry that was stocked and pillaged with equally unmanaged abandon. Just twenty-four hours before I'd been wearing the greatest pair of rose colored glasses, and now that they were smashed all I could do was keep my distance for the time being and consider the option of a new plan. And my thoughts weren't anywhere near approaching all that had been suggested of my "future husband" who he claimed was "still dead to (me)" but "soon to rise".

Yet the Universe had other plans. The call the Tribe had been waiting a month to receive on a land purchase we'd been pushing for near Ashland came and we had to go - then and there - to review the contract, the (finally) surveyed parcel, and make our decision before its release to the then-hungry market. Ah, commitment. The very commitment I'd worked hard to orchestrate and lived without the simplest of amenities to afford.

There have been a few times in my life that my world suddenly slipped into slow-motion - once when I met Al, once during a car accident, once a few years later on in my life when I learned that Mihr was dead, and now as I got into the car and shut the door. My heart beat faster but everything else slowed way down. This was a date with destiny foreshadowed by my "life changing Lucifer dream". Yet even still the question was what dream to follow in context of the unfolding moment... my long-held dream of intentional fellowship or the astral experience that resonated to my core?

The trip from Eugene to Ashland takes several hours. Much to my surprise the usually silent Hephaestus (my then-husband) was especially talkative. He'd had a strange dream, he said, that he was having a baby with "a Brazilian Girl" (which years later, he did). He wanted to know if I thought we were soul mates.

"What do you think?" I questioned back, flitting around the window the Universe had just so kindly opened for me.

"Probably not," he stated matter-of-factly.

"No probably not," I agreed, not even completely sure of how I would define the term. In other relationships this might be awkward or weird or especially poignant but it wasn't for us. Not so much, anyway. We'd been together since high school, more out of convenience than love and because of a few mutual interests which kept us connected (most significantly, the children). This wasn't the first time we'd wondered about the importance of our bond. But I decided the opportunity was too perfect not to take the past one step forward into the future, "And if either of us meets someone who feels more like a soul mate, I think we should tell the other and then just go with it. We can deal with whatever needs to come after that."

He eyed me suspiciously and only quipped, "Yeah, that Brazilian girl was pretty hot." In accord with his style, however, after an hour or more of contemplative silence the subject rekindled, "Something has happened." It wasn't a question.

But, then again, why should it be? My statement had lacked the questioning that had always been. So I told him about the dream. I told him about the beliefs I'd traded for the sake of bringing together this group; I told him about Lucifer; I even told him about my future husband. And we made some decisions.

We looked at the most amazing land outside of Ashland, and then we ate pizza and went back to our dome in the woods. There would be no land for The Butterfly Tribe.

The dream was over but I was exhilarated to be awake.
