Minder is meer. Zoals met alle boutades is ook dit niet in alle gevallen waar. Neem nu ‘Your Anchor’, de laatste plaat van Lackthereof. Na het nodige aantal draaibeurten blijken er leuke dingen op te staan, maar pakkend is het allemaal niet. Daarvoor zit er iets te weinig variatie in.

Hoewel de bio het tegendeel aangeeft, wordt op Wikipedia gesteld dat Menomena een bijproduct is van Lackthereof en niet omgekeerd. Hoe dan ook, bij beide projecten is Danny Seim de spilfiguur. Terwijl hij bij Menomena de rol van drummer op zich neemt, is hij de frontman (en de drummer) bij de andere band. Het betreft hier trouwens het negende album van deze band . Het eerste stamt uit 1998 terwijl Menomena pas is begonnen met opnemen rond 2003. Tot zover de geschiedenis.

Dit is niet meteen de meest uitbundige muziek. Voor happy popsongs ben je bij Lackthereof aan het verkeerde adres. Het gebruik van zijn stem suggereert eerder verveling dan opwinding. Dat heeft ongetwijfeld te maken met de natuurlijke beperkingen van ’s mans stem, maar ook de intonatie is vrij eentonig.

Muzikaal steunt het allemaal zwaar op de ritmesectie binnen een band. De drums nemen duidelijk het voortouw, ondanks of misschien juist door het feit dat ze zoals in opener Chess Pass fysiek gescheiden (want volledig naar de linkerkant gemixt) van de andere instrumenten en de stem. Bij die andere instrumenten is het vooral de bas (luister naar Vacant Eyes of eender welk ander nummer, eigenlijk) die met de aandacht gaat lopen. Ander speelgoed wordt wel gebruikt maar slechts in erg beperkte mate.

Op zich is dit dan wel een best interessant experiment. Om met enkel bas en drums een dergelijk album op te nemen. Maar als je daar dan het werk van een band als Morphine tegenover zet (al is de sax daar uiteraard toegevoegde waarde), zit daar toch heel wat meer passie in.  Dit is leuk en werkt op de duur op je in, maar blijven hangen doet het allemaal niet.

En dan is er nog de cover van The Nationals Fake Empire. Tja, hierover zullen de meningen (check het forum van The National) ongetwijfeld verdeeld blijven. Seims stem kraakt zich doorheen een erg minimale versie. Hardnekkige Nationalfans zullen het ongetwijfeld heiligschennis noemen. Zelf kunnen we een goede cover wel appreciëren, alleen is deze versie volledig ontdaan van emotie en net als de rest van dit album, lijkt het dan ook gedoemd om in de vergetelheid weg te sterven.

la búsqueda de un nuevo sonido nos lleva, con algo de retraso, a los libros. al contrario de lo que dice la voz en the wind-up bird de tunng, "the books have nothing to say". pues esta vez sí. no sólo porque se salen de una dinámica musical que sólo el mashup (por ofrecer nuevas lecturas de material anterior, y no un simple refrito de estilos que provoca más bostezos que expectación) ha conseguido liberarnos, sino porque amplía horizontes en el concepto de canción sin tener que llevarnos de la oreja a la biblioteca y escalar las estanterías hasta 'experimental art', 'impressionisme' y tales y cuales.

abundan las flotaciones (a little longing goes away), las atmósferas orgánicas (estado que defiendo por igual tanto en la música como en el campo de batalla; be good to them always), los 'samples' de colegio privado y el polvo de los años cincuenta ingleses. hay espacio para la calma (un poco con urgencia becketiana; smells like content y an animated description of mr. maps) y narraciones radiofónicas simultáneas sobre la creación en el lienzo (venice). el coronel higgins negará todo placer en semejantes modernidades mientras se dirije a su tienda de campaña a poner en marcha el fonógrafo.

I write to you all from my new laptop! It's not really, what you think though. It's more of, me claiming (for the second time) an unused laptop from the chemistry department of LSU... It's a dell. Not the best deal on the market, but the best deal in my situation, when it's compared to that crappy HP I had before. I just wish the battery chord was a lot longer... Anyway, I am procrastinating right now, on that hideous self portrait of mine due Tuesday. I also procrastinated about an hour ago, lecturing my parents about how we need to start giving in to the fad of buying organic foods at New Seasons, because Suzanne Summers beat cancer that way. I really worry. I mean, I know it's pretty hypocritical of me to say, "STOP DRINKING COKE" while I'm taking a sip of the can as I speak, and I can't be like "STOP COOKING PROCESSED FOOD!" when I had a noodle bowl last night. Sigh...it seems there is some stubborn tension in this family. Except my cat, Sofi, always breaks any tension there might be as she comes running to the area we are located in, seeking endless attention, and getting all up in our faces.

On a side note, I finally got that Greek key ear cuff I've been searching for! All inspired by some random girl I sat next to at MUN last year... And now I've inspired someone else...XD

This one comes from my buddy, Chris (AKA Phat B) Walker. His credentials include: slammin’ bass player, music guru (has more music than me), worship leader extraordinaire, and all around super-cool guy… I love him.

He promised this back when I started posting my playlists. And got it to me just as Summer was coming to a close – not because he’s lazy but because making mix-tape is THAT important to him. (and you wonder why I love him!)

I can still bike to work as the weather is still warm enough, but my off-site meeting schedule hasn’t really allowed me the flexibility. So this playlist, sadly has mostly been used for mowing the lawn… which it has been good for as well.

Get Your Way has this cool funk beat to it. It made me change the rhythm of the way I pedal, but regardless it was a good track for the mix. By the way, I’ve been a huge fan of Cullum since his second release twentysomething, especially his cover of Radiohead’s High and Dry.

Just (Radio Edit) | Mark Ronson | Just

Ronson has made the list before. This one was extra special as it’s a RADIOHEAD cover as well. It’s a great version of the song, and perfect for the mix.

Move | John Reuben | Professional Rapper

I was actually surprised to see Reuben on the list. Don’t get me wrong, I actually think that Reuben is one of the few Christian hip-hop acts worth listening to; I just never thought of him for a playlist. This is off of his first album. It’s a great track for a playlist like this.

muscle'n flo | Menomena | Friend and Foe

This is a great indie-band that Chris got me into (not only for great music, but also amazing packaging design.) The track is an interesting choice as it doesn’t seem like it would fit on the playlist, but as you listen you hear the driving backbeat beneath moving the song along. Turns out it’s a perfect addition to the list. (Not to mention gives you some street cred with the hipster kids running around these days…)

Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over) | Radiohead | Hail To The Thief

I can’t believe it’s been five years since this album came out. I put the track on a mix-tape I made commemorating an Adventure Race a friend and I did. It was nice to hear it again on this mix. Great get-ya-pumped track!

Dancing Shoes | Arctic Monkeys | Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

A Brit band that came out of nowhere, the Arctic Monkeys have reached critical acclaim for their first release. Dancing Shoes is just a fun track that you just have to move to… the title says it all I guess. And the video makes me smile too.

Yes | Morphine | Yes

Morphine is one of Chris’ all time favorite bands. Unfortunately due to the untimely death of their lead vocalist Mark Sandman, they’re no longer releasing albums (as far as I know, Chris may have to correct me on that.) But they created some great music in their day with some crazy saxophone sounds. Yes is a great track to get you going and keep you moving with a killer bass-line.

Holiest Of Thieves | The Myriad | With Arrows, With Poise

The Myriad is another band I’d never heard of before this mix. This is another track that snuck up on me. I love the way the instrumentation keeps moving throughout the song.

Get Ur Freak On | Eels | Meet The Eels: Essential Eels - Vol. 1, 1996-2006

Now this might just be my favorite track on this mix. First of all I think the Eels are amazing (see Live at Town Hall for a good dose.) And they covered Missy Elliot…. I have Missy’s version of this song and have put it on several playlists before. This version, from a moody indie-sounding band, is just great. When I saw Chris right after he gave me the playlist, this was first track I complemented him on. What an excellent find!

Resurrect Me | Jon Foreman | Summer

Foreman’s seasonal releases were some of my favorite musical moments over the past year. This song is the perfect close to this mix. It’s happy and full of hope and both lyrically and musically some of Foreman’s best. Be sure to check out the whole collection of these – (This may come as no surprise given my disposition, but Winter is my favorite.)

Spent the past few nights at Music Fest North West.  Tried to take some photos, but they all looked like shit except for this photo of Menomena's drummer.  

My favorite show by far was The Battles.  In fact, it was the best show i've seen in a long time.  I also got to see M. Ward, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and a few others I can't remember.  I wanted to see Ratatat again, but I slept through their 5:30pm show.

Whoever is in charge of picking the music for MFNW, you;re doing a good job.

When we got there, caught the end of Bodies of Water. I like them. But, they didn't seem to have much of a crowd. I guess everyone was wandering around looking for food like me.

Started drinking after I ate. Heiniken was giving out free samples of their light beer... which was refreshing, but kind of lame. Beers were 7 bucks in the main area of the festival. But, if you went to any of the bars encompassed within the festival area... they were cheaper. Not by much, but cheaper nonetheless. Had a beer at Cafe Stella. I love that place. I have no idea when I will be able to go back there since I am sans girlfriend at the moment and it's not the kind of place you go by yourself or with a non-romantic friend.

Walked back over to the main stage area. Drank some bad sake. Met up with some other lethiferous individuals. Just kidding. They were friends of mine. Headed over to El Cid for a bunch of drinks. Saw some strange faith healer dude who was using his magic to feel up a couple of unsuspecting females distracted by his cheesy sharktooth necklace, salt & pepper chest hair and his leathery skin.

After my trusty cellphone alarm went off, I knew it was time to see the band that I came for. Menomena. I've wanted to see them since I bought their first album on a friend's recommendation back when I still lived in New York. As soon as I saw that the album was a flip book as well... I knew I was going to like them. Very unique sound.

So, after they finished their set; we headed back over to El Cid. More drinks. Some shots. Some talk of eating bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Communication confusion. Talks of going to see Broken Social Scene. Group got separated. Things broke off. Lights went out in my head. Barely saw any of the band over the humming in my ears of a sting.

I left shortly after that. The crowd was too thick. My feet were dragging. I really wanted to stay and see Antibalas (a band I will cover in a Northport Corner down the line). But, I couldn't muster up the energy nor the will to have fun anymore. I was drained emotionally, physically and mentally.

Note to self: Next year, go a little later... no bad sake and wear shorts. And remember to pay more attention to people around you.

Para não deixar passar em branco - essa semana falei de quase tudo, menos música -, fica aqui minha dica: Ben Sollee. Música para sentar e relaxar, esquecer do dia de trabalho cheio (às vezes um marasmo, como no meu caso). Pela capa do álbum, dá a impressão de que ele é um tocador de violoncelo e nada mais. Pode ser que sim, não tenho certeza, mas você percebe outros instrumentos típicos de folk e de blues ao ouvir suas músicas. Pelo que eu saiba, esse é o primeiro trabalho dele, então há muito o que esperar desse artista.

Um que eu ouvi ontem e simplesmente abominei da minha lista é o The Ting Tings. Pop britânico - mais precisamente de Manchester - tentando se fazer de alternativo. Péssimo. A voz dela não convence, muito menos os videoclipes (não vou linkar porque não gostei mesmo). Tem uma música, aliás, que é insuportável: That's Not My Name. Não vou usar o argumento de que ela fica repetindo essa frase inúmeras vezes porque eu gosto de outras músicas do mesmo tipo, mas essa realmente não dá pra ouvir inteira (nem sei como consegui escutar até o final, sinceramente).

Bom, apesar da escassez, tenho mais duas sugestões: What Laura Says e Lackthereof, projeto paralelo do fundador da banda Menomena (sempre confundo com Metronomy, não me pergunte o porquê dessa ligeira dislexia; não conheço nada de ambas as bandas). Não vou entrar em detalhes porque eu não ouvi atentamente. Também compartilhe sua opinião - ela é muito importante para esse blog.

Donderdag

Nooit eenvoudig om koud de tent te worden ingegooid. Maar het Britse Red Light Company (Club) zette desondanks een meer dan respectabele prestatie neer als opener. Poprocksongs met pit is wat zij serveerden. Zanger-gitarist Richard Frenneaux heeft alvast de manieren om Wembley stadium aan te kunnen.

In de Marquee ging Kaizers Orchestra meteen voor het hoogste podium. Met de van hen intussen bekende mix van rock- en volksmuziek werd het publiek moeiteloos ingepalmd. De klassieke gasmaskers, olievaten en autowielvelgen zorgden voor de visuele kick. De muziek deed de rest.

De Chateau had plaats geruimd voor A Mountain Of One. Met overduidelijke invloeden van Pink Floyd (de afsluiter was meer dan een vingerwijzing naar Great Gig In The Sky) en een zanger die het beste van John Cale en Jim Kerr (van Simple Minds) in zich probeert te verenigen, was dit een behoorlijke gig. Niet genoeg voor een finale, maar desondanks erg leuk.

Wie duidelijk voor de medailles ging waren Pigeon Detectives. Een overvolle Marquee zou hem daar moeten brengen. Algauw kwam het déjàvugevoel echter de kop opsteken. Ondanks het nieuwe album is er sinds hun doortocht vorig jaar niet meteen veel veranderd. Het ontbreekt de nieuwe songs aan karakter en body, ook al blijft zanger Matt Bowman nog steeds tot het gaatje gaan, het podium afdwijlen, de microfoon rondslingeren en in het publiek duiken. Dat verdient een zeven voor inzet, maar het geheel wordt er ondanks het enthousiasme van het publiek niet door gered.

Voor Motek (Wablief) is postrock het stadium “post” duidelijk nog niet voorbij. Hun eigenwijze versie wordt met verve gebracht. Vooral het heerlijk uitgesponnen De Vlucht kon ons erg bekoren. Ook al zat het geluid niet altijd perfect, dit verdiende misschien wel edelmetaal.

Op donderdag was het goud weggelegd voor Santogold (Dance Hall), die haar aanstekelijke mengeling van allerlei genres smaakvol en strak wist te brengen. Met twee militair opgeleide en synchroon opererende danseressen/backing vocalists, een dj en een band die afwisselend het voortouw namen en Santi White zelf die haar songs liet knallen, was de aanspraak die zij op de medailles maakte meer dan terecht. Of het nu I’m A Lady was, Say Aha of L.E.S. Artistes, band en dj maakten van dit optreden een vroeg feestje.

In de Chateau viel Little Dragon lichtjes door de mand. De Zweden bleken eerder een grote draak en de opkomst was daarmee dan ook recht evenredig.

Het trio Menomena “houdt van samenzang en verafschuwt ernst”. Woorden uit het door u gekende weekblad gesponsorde programmaboekje die duidelijk heel wat nieuwsgierigen naar de Chateau hadden gelokt. De samenzang was inderdaad prominent aanwezig, maar de humor was echter ver zoek en ondanks enkele betere momenten waarin het tegendraadse het won van het doordeweekse zal dit optreden in de annalen der vergetelijken verdwijnen.

Hoewel de laatste cd van British Sea Power niet echt tot onze favorieten behoort, konden we het niet laten om toch een kijkje te gaan nemen in de Club. En aanvankelijk leek onze mening bevestigd te worden. De songs kabbelden gezapig over het met scheepsvlaggen gedecoreerde podium. De power leek ver zoek.

Maar na Waving Flags kwam daar verandering in. Het zeil werd samen met het niveau de nok in gehesen zodat we nog prima versies te horen kregen van onder andere No Lucipher. Ook afsluiter The Spirit Of St. Louis verdiende op zijn minst een vermelding. Na een wat makke start werd er toch nog een toptijd neergezet.

De grote winnaar van de eerste dag kwam uit een eerder onverwachte hoek. Niet dat we van Iron & Wine (Club) geen kwaliteit verwachtten. Integendeel zelfs. Maar de mate van perfectie waarmee hier werd gemusiceerd, benaderde een spookachtig grote klasse. Met zijn band (met daarin zijn zus Sarah op viool) wist hij zijn fans te betrekken bij de magische kring die hij met zijn muziek aanlegde.

Met Woman King werd de toverkracht opgewekt. Elk detail, van het kleinste belletje tot de basdrum, zat perfect zodat niemand ook maar iets hoefde te missen. Je zou The Devil Never Sleeps en Wolves (Song Of The Shepherd’s Dog) als hoogtepunten kunnen noemen, maar dat zou de andere nummers, die vaak naadloos in elkaar overliepen, onrecht aandoen.

Wie vertrouwd is met Drive-By Truckers, wist waaraan hij zich kon verwachten in de Chateau. Voor nuance was er niet meteen erg veel plaats, ook al bleek hun laatste album toch meer gediversifieerd dan de voorgangers. Afwisselend namen Mike Cooley en Patterson Hood het voortouw. Het was uiteraard weer lekker rocken met nummers als Self Destructive Zone, maar de vonken die er bij deze band soms vanaf springen, leken toch te ontbreken.

Flaming Lips-shows (Marquee) zijn vermaard voor hun levendigheid en animo, maar zowat iedereen wist dat er confettikanonnen zouden zijn, dat Wayne Coyne een rondje over het publiek zou maken in een ballon en dat er teletubbies en aliens aan de zijlijn zouden staan. Dan blijft er enkel nog de muziek en hoewel Race For The Prize en pakweg Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots nog steeds prima nummers zijn, werd er verder gekozen voor meer obscuur werk, dat aan het festivalpubliek volledig voorbijging. Neem daarbij de wat mank lopende klank in de Marquee en deze doortocht kon niet meteen een succes genoemd worden.

Als je een groep omschrijft als Battles zonder gitaren, zou dat niet echt eerlijk zijn. Holy Fuck (Chateau) gebruikt gedeeltelijk dezelfde middelen: synths, samplers en stemvervormers, maar hun ritmesectie is klassiek en zorgt voor een pompend ritme dat de vermoeide oogleden moeiteloos open hield. Het geheel werd daardoor minder mathematisch, melodieuzer en vooral behoorlijk funkier. Dit was een aangename verrassing als afsluiter van de eerste dag.

Vrijdag

State Radio (Marquee) mocht de kop van de tweede dag afslaan. Leuk idee, die samensmelting van reggaeritmes, pop en soms zelfs tegen metal aanschurkende rock. Alleen jammer dat niet alle liedjes even mooi uitgewerkt zijn. Desalniettemin loont het vast de moeite om dit bandje uit Boston te blijven volgen.

Zucht, alweer een duo met gitaar en drums in de Chateau. Maar voorwaar, The Dodos zijn effectief anders. U hoeft de ogen niet weg te laten draaien. Een akoestische gitaar en een drummer die enkel gebruik maakt van een snare, drie toms en wat cimbalen, maken van dit bandje iets echt origineels. Ons doet het nog het meest aan Eyeless In Gaza denken, een obscure jarentachtigband die het ook met enkel die beperkte middelen deed en de underground nooit is ontstegen. Meric Long verpakte zijn stem ook in galm en de drums – Joe Haener stond het duo bij op vibrafoon en vuilbak – zijn erg naakt en basic. Dit was zonder enige twijfel dé ontdekking van vrijdag.

Nina Nastasia moest haar voorgangers in de Chateau doen vergeten, maar het adrenalinegehalte zat daar duidelijk nog te hoog, waardoor haar eenzamehartensongs tenonder gingen in het festivalgeweld.

Voor Girls In Hawaii was Pukkelpop een thuismatch. De Vlaamse leeuw heeft deze Walen immers al lang in zijn hart gesloten en de Marquee barstte dan ook uit zijn voegen. Terecht, zoals bleek, want de heren spraken niet alleen een aardig mondje Nederlands, hun muziek sprak bovendien boekdelen van encyclopedisch formaat.

Er werd gerockt waar nodig, ingetogen gemusiceerd waar voorzien. Deze groep heeft de status Belgisch Grandaddy al lang overstegen. Hier stond immers een band met een eigen gezicht en een duidelijke missie : aantonen dat dit in heel Europa en verder moet gehoord worden. Dit was wereldklasse. Door de tomeloze inzet was er naast de visuals ook altijd iets te zien op het podium.

Bescheidener maar daarom niet minder indrukwekkend was de show van Caribou. Vaste maatjes van die andere experimentele band, die zaterdag zijn opwachting zou maken, Fuck Buttons, maakten de heren rond Dr Daniel Victor Snaith de Chateau vakkundig in. Twee drumkits stonden prominent vooraan op het toneel uitgestald. Drums die uiteindelijk niet alleen door “vaste” drummer Brad Weber zouden worden gebezigd, maar ook door frontman, gitarist en knoppendraaier Snaith en uiteindelijk zelfs door de hele band.De experimenteerdrift stond nergens in de weg van de melodie met als resultaat dat hier een dijk van een show werd neergezet. De toeschouwers waren dan ook laaiend enthousiast en moesten vaststellen dat de voorziene drie kwartier veel te snel voorbij waren.

Opdondertje Sam Duckworth, beter bekend onder zijn alter ego Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly (Club) toonde met verve aan dat ook met een akoestische gitaar gedreven muziek kan gemaakt worden. Geruggesteund door een magistrale ritmesectie bracht hij zijn songs (Find The Time kende u ongetwijfeld al van de radio) alsof hij volledig onder de speed zat, fladderend over het podium. Hoewel dat gehos ergens halverwege wat eentonig dreigde te worden, kwam daar naar het einde toe opnieuw verbetering in.

Cold War Kids (Main Stage) hebben net een nieuwe plaat klaar. Pas in september vindt u ze in de winkel, maar Pukkelpop kreeg alvast een voorsmaakje. De toon is opnieuw erg donker, de muziek hoekig en onvoorspelbaar. Op dat grote podium leek de band echter een beetje verloren te lopen. In een kleinere ruimte kunnze nog meer tegen elkaar opbotsen en mekaar uitdagen, terwijl dat hier niet echt leek te lukken. Jawel, St. John en Something’s Not Right With Me blijven van een zeldzame klasse, maar kwamen op een of andere manier op deze zonovergoten wei niet echt over. In november mogen ze herkansen in de Ancienne Belgique.

Wonderlijk genoeg speelde Tunng (Chateau) voor een volle tent. De groep heeft de doorbraak naar het grote publiek nochtans (nog) niet gemaakt. Maar hun attractieve folksongs met vaak hemelse samenzang wisten de toeschouwers terecht te boeien. Het vleugje humor dat daaraan werd toegevoegd (de ode aan Metallica in Soup) was toegevoegde waarde. De band was in grote doen en de reacties waren laaiend enthousiast.

Al van ’s morgens was het overduidelijk dat vooral Metallica (Main Stage) medaillefavoriet zou zijn op vrijdag. De honderden zoniet duizenden t-shirs in combinatie met de voortdurende al dan niet ironische verwijzingen van andere bands (Tunng, Lightspeed Champion, Blood Red Shoes, …) maakten duidelijk dat hier iets te gebeuren stond.

Toen de band het uitgebouwde podium – hellingen, een verhoog en een gigantisch, podiumbreed videoscherm – beklom, bleek de medaille al op voorhand uitgedeeld. James Hetfield zag er niet alleen behoorlijk kwiek uit, ook zijn stem was prima in vorm. De rest van de band was eveneens duidelijk blij nog eens op een podium te kunnen staan.

Je mag er nog zo’n hekel aan hebben, Metallica weet zijn set op te bouwen. Tussen de wat minder bekende nummers wordt op tijd en stond een klassieker gegooid zodat het geheel nergens ook maar enigszins vervelend wordt. And Justice For All was bijvoorbeeld één van die classics. Ook uit het nieuwe album ‘Death Magnetic’ werd al geput met Cyanide, dat terug leek te keren naar de roots van de groep.

Uiteraard was het voor One en nummers als Nothing Else Matters dat het overgrote deel van het publiek geduld had opgebracht. In combinatie met de nodige pyrotechnics en vuurwerk werd hier een prima show opgevoerd, hier en daar gelardeerd met humor (de vingergrap aan het begin van Enter Sandman) en interactie (Master Of Puppets). Dit was een waardige headliner voor dag twee.

Zaterdag

Verbazingwekkend hoeveel festivalgangers hun tent al achter zich hadden gelaten om half twaalf op zaterdag. De Zweedse Lykke Li (Marquee) liet het zich graag welgevallen en onthaalde de vroege vogels – in sommige gevallen eerder verzopen waterkiekens – op een prima gig. Een beetje groen achter de oren nog misschien, maar daarom niet minder doorleefd. Benieuwd wat de toekomst haar zal brengen.

De Club had een warm onthaal klaar voor Look See Proof. Niet dat die meteen baanbrekende muziek maken. Zet ze gerust bij de onstuitbare stroom Britse gitaarbandjes die dezer dagen de wereld proberen te veroveren. Maar hun aanstekelijke energie maakte veel goed. Of dat energiegehalte doorheen hun carrière kan worden aangehouden, blijft nog maar de vraag.

Wie hield van een stevig potje noise, kon terecht in de Chateau waar Fuck Buttons zijn duivels ontketende. Twee jonge knapen achter een tafel vol elektronica en speelgoed overspoelden de aanwezigen met golven van geluid. Dat lijkt misschien eentonig, maar toch zat er voldoende melodie verscholen in het geproduceerde geknars en gepiep. Stemmen werden vervormd langs de Fisher-Price speelgoedmicrofoon of door de synthesizers gehaald. Af en toe werd er ook gebruik gemaakt van beats zonder de noiseliefhebber hiermee echter af te schrikken. Dit resulteerde in een spannend geheel dat voorbij was voor je het besefte. Alleen daarvoor al verdienen deze jongemannen alle respect.

Alweer even geleden dat we Two Gallants (Club) nog aan het werk zagen. Ooit hebben ze al betere concerten gegeven. Dat neemt echter niet weg dat dit duo uit San Francisco – hun muziek moet het in donkere kelders gewonnen hebben van hun zelfmoordplannen – nog steeds een verademing is in vergelijking met veel eendagshypes. Hun murder songs deden toch weer de nodige rillingen over ruggen lopen. Wij genoten vooral van Las Crucas Jail en het op de wals gebaseerde en aan een zekere Eve opgedragen Nothing To You.

MGMT was onverhoopt hoog geprogrammeerd in de Marquee en het publiek was daar maar wat blij om. Dat ene album heeft duidelijk heel wat hartjes voor de band gewonnen want de tent was alweer overvol. Toch was het vertoon dat werd gebracht eerder mak. Hitjes Electric Feel en Time To Pretend. Konden de handen uiteraard op elkaar krijgen, maar verder was er bitter weinig te beleven. Of het moest de afsluiter zijn waarbij de heren zingen over een voorgeprogrammeerd deuntje. Het mocht toch wel iets meer zijn.

Psychedelica werd pas onlangs terug opgevist uit de olympische archieven der muziek. Black Mountain ging in de Club resoluut voor de overwinning. Met op de blues geschoeide en naar de topzware kost uit de jaren tachtig verwijzende muziek werd een fabuleuze prestatie neergepoot. Amber Webber, een met een duidelijk klassiek geschoolde stem gezegende dame zorgde samen met gitarist Stephen McBean voor de vocals, terwijl een uitstekende ritmesectie en een toetsenist de nodige accenten legden. Afsluiter Tyrants was het beste bewijs dat dat verdomd spannende resultaten kon opleveren. Maar ook daarvoor al was het prijs met Wucan. Retro? Absoluut, maar wat is er tegenwoordig niet retro?

Feestjes bouwen kan Jamie Lidell (Marquee) als de beste en dat is dan ook wat geschiedde. Of het nu met zijn band was, alleen met een batterij synthesizers en samplers of doodgewoon a capella, hij bespeelde de tent als een liefdevolle koning zijn onderdanen.Dat hij er als een halvegare uitzag, deed nergens terzake. Another Day (met band), Call Back Around (solo) of de absoluut grandioze afsluiter Multiply (a capella), alles was even magistraal en zette de hele zaak in rep en roer. Zowel de fan als de leek kon hiervan genieten, al waren er opnieuw problemen met de uit de kluiten gewassen bassen.

Elbow fungeerde als festivalslot in de Marquee. De groep is duidelijk gegroeid sinds ze hun eerste werk op plaat zette. Ook hier wordt de volmaaktheid benaderd zonder dat het resultaat ook maar ergens uit kunststof vervaardigd lijkt. Hier stonden muzikanten van vlees en bloed, die hun ervaring, emoties en klasse graag voor het publiek tentoonspreidden.

Na het blazerskunstje in Starlings, ontdeed voorman Guy Garvey zich van zijn vest en hoed en struinde hij over het podium als een operazanger die zijn teksten met wijde gebaren aan de rand van het podium kracht bijzette, daarbij beurtelings de linkse en de rechts kant van de tent bejegenend.

Muzikaal was het vooral uit ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ dat werd geciteerd met The Bones Of You, Mirrorball en Grounds For Divorce, samen met single en afsluiter One Day Like This zowat het sterkste werk uit dat album. Kippenvel was er bij Forget Myself dat enthousiast werd meegezongen.

Als afsluiter van het festival kreeg Elbow nog het voorrecht om met Scattered Black And Whites een bisnummer te spelen. Meteen de ideale gelegenheid voor Garvey om hoed en vest terug op te pikken, klaar om samen met de zowat honderdvijftigduizend andere bezoekers al dan niet na nog een klein feestje met Soulwax op de Main Stage, huiswaarts te keren.

Tussendoor nog genoten van stukjes van o.a. een prima Lightspeed Champion, een feestelijk Das Pop, een curieus The Rones, een wonderlijk goed Bloc Party en de dansles in de Wablieftent en weggelopen bij Hot Chip, Blood Red Shoes en Martina Topley-Bird.

Spóźniliśmy się na Kaizers Orchestra, bo wymiana biletów na opaski festiwalowe okazała się dość wąskim gardłem, podobnie zresztą jak przechodząca przez Hasselt dwupasmówka, która zarazem służyła jako przejście dla pieszych pomiędzy terenem festiwalu a polem namiotowym. No i mieliśmy lekkie spóźnienie. W czwartek powitała nas więc Amy MacDonald - sympatyczna i bezpretensjonalna Szkotka śpiewająca na początek popołudnia na dużej scenie. Idealne do tego, żeby dokończyć frytki z majonezem, belgijski przysmak i festiwalowe pożywienie o najlepszym stosunku kaloryczności do ceny. Strategicznie ominęliśmy namiot z The Cribs, wychodząc z założenia, że to nie nasza bajka, i wylądowaliśmy pod sceną Dance Hall na występie Santogold. Zachwyty nad jej płytą trochę mnie ostatnio denerwowały, no bo jednak trochę wtórna w stosunku do M.I.A. Tymczasem ten przyjemny koncert udowodnił, że na scenie rzecz się sprawdza naprawdę dobrze, wykonanie studyjnych niuansów jest co najmniej przyzwoite, a chórek wokalistek-tancerek przebranych w lekko kiczowate stroje okazał się jedną z bardziej widowiskowych formacji na całym Pukkelpopie. Zdaniem mojej żony powinny dostać złoto w konkurencji tańca synchronicznego, gdyby na olimpiadzie ktoś taką wprowadził.

W przelocie rzuciliśmy uchem na również lekko kiczowatą, ale już znacznie mniej absorbującą muzykę Little Dragon na przesympatycznej scenie Chateau (mała, przytulna, z trybuną dla widzów i okrągłym kształtem - jedna z fajniejszych, jakie kiedykolwiek widziałem na letnich festiwalach, choć przy tym paskudnie duszna). Jaka płyta, taki live. Z pustego to i Salomon. Wiadomo.

Dalej byli Infadels. Zespół lubiany na festiwalach, na Pukkelpopie obecny po raz trzeci i mający tu swoją oddaną publiczność. Ja rozumiem mieć chwytliwe refreny. Ale ta grupa ma same refreny. Uciekliśmy więc, żeby zobaczyć od początku Menomenę w Chateau. I żeby się przekonać, że trzech facetów na scenie (przystojnych, to fakt) to bywa trochę za mało. Tym albo brakuje ogrania koncertowego, albo mają kłopoty z pokazaniem atutów swoich niezłych kompozycji w warunkach scenicznych. Tyle tytułem eufemizmów. Bo jeśli mam być bardziej precyzyjny: w aranżach ich koncertowych kawałków są takie dziury jak w ciele Lemoniadowego Joe po postrzale (to porównanie to taki mały test wiekowy dla czytelników niniejszego bloga). Ale zdzierżyliśmy twardo prawie do końca, bo na zewnątrz szalał Serj Tankian, jak się okazało - kompletnie nieszkodliwy koleś, który śpiewa dziś piosenki przy pianinie. Te czasy...

Pod namiotem Marquee (druga co do wielkości scena) zameldowaliśmy się punktualnie na koncert Joan As Police Woman. Nie widzieliśmy artystki w Hard Rock Cafe (i podobno słusznie, bo to lokal, w którym jeszcze nie udało się dobrze nagłośnić koncertu, a mówią, że ten w tej materii niczego nie zmienił), ale za to mamy piękne wspomnienia z jej poprzedniej trasy europejskiej i berlińskiego Lido. Tu spodziewałem się klapy, bo nowa płyta taka jakby mniej "koncertowa", tymczasem występ sprawił, że zupełnie inaczej spojrzałem na album. A przede wszystkim na to, jak urosły umiejętności wokalne Joan między pierwszą a drugą płytą. Szkoda tylko braku Antony'ego w "I Defy", ale basistka i nowy perkusista nieźle wybrnęli z zadania, dzieląc się partią Antony'ego po połowie. :-) Niektóre z nowych utworów - choćby "Holiday" - w wersji scenicznej na trzy instrumenty wypadły lepiej niż ze smyczkami i smaczkami studyjnymi. W sumie od tego koncertu zaczął się dla mnie festiwal.

Zostawiliśmy British Sea Power fanom British Sea Power i poszliśmy zobaczyć Tricky'ego. Tu było gęsto od ludzi i głośno, ale to, co usłyszeliśmy, tylko utwierdziło nas w przekonaniu, że Tricky skończył się na "Maxinquaye". Chwyta za pompatyczny, rockowy banał, ale robi to z mniejszym wdziękiem niż jego koledzy z Massive Attack, próbuje śpiewać, nie wychodzi mu źle, ale chciałbym nieśmiało przypomnieć, że chwilę wcześniej słuchaliśmy Joan Wasser. Okrucieństwo to jedyna słuszna reakcja pozwalająca w konsekwencji wycisnąć z festiwalu to, co najlepsze. Po obejrzeniu finału Tricky'ego, przebiegliśmy wystraszeni na drugi koniec imprezy, o drodze słysząc początek koncertu Iana Browna (widzieliśmy kiedyś i wystarczy). Na drugim końcu był namiot o nazwie Club, a w nim - koncert Hadouken!, grupy grindie (grime + indie), co przekładało się na efekt końcowy tak, że muzyka była bardziej grime, a wygląd bardziej indie. Średnia wieku spadła już chyba do 15 lat, a językiem dominującym wśród publiczności stał się angielski. Na scenie też zobaczyliśmy i usłyszeliśmy również młodzież - dużo energii, ale technika i pomyślunek gdzieś w tyle; co tu dużo kryć, mają jeszcze to, co najlepsze, przed sobą, ale na razie nie dorastają do pięt swojemu protektorowi Mike'owi Skinnerowi. Przebiegliśmy na Hot Chip, spodziewając się czegoś lepszego. Sparzyliśmy się w sposób tak zdecydowany, że aż poszliśmy po rozum do głowy i wylądowaliśmy na jednoosobowym występie Henry'ego Rollinsa, który zamiast śpiewać - opowiadał przez mikrofon przez półtorej godziny (jeśli nie liczyć setów didżejskich był to najdłuższy występ festiwalu!), co sądzi o Ameryce, świecie współczesnym, dalszym i bliższym Wschodzie oraz robalach. Wychodziliśmy z namiotu zadowoleni, a jednocześnie trochę rozbici, bo to był na razie (po Joanie) drugi najlepszy koncert dnia...

W dodatku przed nami był największy dylemat festiwalu. Co wybrać: Mercury Rev czy Iron & Wine. Ostatecznie daliśmy sobie spokój z widzianym wcześniej MR na rzecz grupy, którą przywiózł do Europy Sam Beam, a która z Iron & Wine znanym z płyt okazała się mieć niewiele wspólnego. Ba, to był nieco inny koncert niż ten na Offie (który znam tylko z radia), nieco bardziej, hmm... rockandrollowy. Więcej południowego rocka i improwizacji niż w Mysłowicach, ale trochę kosztem atmosfery. Zazdroszczę więc Offowiczom (a wiem, że byli także na Pukkelpopie, bo mignęła nam koszulka Off Festivalu w tłumie) wyjątkowego koncertu i akustycznego setu, którego zabrakło w Belgii. Choćz drugiej strony - wyszedłem bardzo usatysfakcjonowany, a reakcja publiczności w Hasselt była kapitalna.

Dzięki miłemu rozkładowi koncertów zdążyliśmy zobaczyć prawie całą Róisin Murphy na dużej scenie. Prawie całą dosłownie, bo przebiera się w tej chwili już nie co 15 minut, ale przed każdym utworem, a robi to na środku sceny. Zaczęła tylko w towarzystwie didżejów i chórku, brzmiało jak set do tańca, ale na szczęście rozwinęło się w miarę upływu czasu i wchodzenia kolejnych instrumentów. Jest czego słuchać (i na co popatrzeć), ale Moloko w wersji live to wciąż - jak dla mnie - rzecz nie do pobicia w tej kategorii. Poza tym kto by tam się zastanawiał nad wyższością Bożego Narodzenia nad Wielkanocą, skoro zaraz mieli grać The Flaming Lips. Pobiegliśmy więc do Marquee zająć miejsca. I słusznie, bo FL to ciągle precyzyjnie przygotowany (a zarazem - paradoksalnie - totalnie spontaniczny) show, jakiego nie robi nikt w świecie alternatywnego rocka. Wayne Coyne nie waha się zrobić cyrk z koncertu po to, żeby od początku podgrzać atmosferę. Zjeżdża ze sceny w plastikowej kuli już na powitanie i otwiera jak zwykle utworem "Race For The Prize" z wybuchami armatek wypełnionych konfetti, balonikami, a teraz jeszcze gromadą teletubisiów (przypominam, że to była wersja na Europę Zachodnią) zgromadzonych po obu stronach sceny. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc: jeśli chodzi o dramaturgię, The Flaming Lips zaczynają w takim punkcie, w którym inni kończą. A potem napięcie stopniowo rośnie. Gdyby nie anemiczna reakcja widowni i parę brzmieniowych zaniedbań i okrutnych zniekształceń, ten set utworów z ostatniej płyty i pojedynczych starszych hitów (były piosenki z wczesnego okresu kariery FL!) byłby skończonym mistrzostwem i najlepszym koncertem The Flaming Lips, jaki widziałem. Ale i tak był najlepszym momentem Pukkelpopu dla mnie prywatnie.

Może to wina poprzedników, ale koncert Holy Fuck - najlepszej młodej grupy koncertowej wg angielskiej prasy - nie zrobił już na mnie takiego wrażenia. Wszystko brzmiało nieco zbyt matematycznie, spodziewałem się jazgotliwego transu na koniec dnia, a tu zawiało chłodem. Zresztą w ogóle zimno się zrobiło, więc poszliśmy spać. Największy pożytek z takiego zakończenia dnia to fakt, że nazwa grupy, którą zobaczyliśmy jako ostatnią, nieźle oddała stan ducha kogoś, kto zobaczył właśnie na scenie The Flaming Lips.

Parę słów o dniu drugim niebawem. Muszę się wyspać, a po takich ilościach frytek z majonezem trudno się zasypia.

Terroromans nie jest, wbrew temu co śmią twierdzić niektórzy, wybitnym dziełem polskiej fonografii, ot dobra płyta z paroma mocnymi szlagierami. Dlatego też większego podniecenia przed Muchami nie odczuwałem, była raczej czysta ciekawość i chęć usłyszenia paru z ich hiciorów. Koncert można powiedzieć, że był taki sobie, głównie za sprawą tragicznego nagłośnienia, ale i podziałało moje dosyć chłodne nastawienie do zespołu i ich repertuaru. Bombowo wypadło nieco odmienione "21 Dni", "Najważniejszy Dzień" też dał radę, o takich pewniakach jak "Miasto Doznań" czy "Galanteria" to już nawet nie będę wspominał. Reszta, poza zafundowanym na zakończenie coverem Bielizny, trzymała poziom bycia w porządku, czyli dokładnie tak jak mogłem oczekiwać. I generalnie to właśnie ostatni utwór był czymś co nadało temu koncertowi innego wymiaru i pozostawiło dobre wrażenie po średnim koncercie. Chwała też, że obyło się bez ponoć tragicznej konferansjerki Wiraszki, a i setlista była na tyle rozsądna, że zadowoliła chyba każdego. Warto też wspomnieć, że ludzi było sporo bo na zewnątrz akurat solidnie lało, więc czy się chciało, czy nie, na Muchy było trzeba iść. Gdyby nie fatalne nagłośnienie namiotu Offensywy, byłoby na bank lepiej niż poprawnie.

Zaledwie drugi koncert mojej wizyty na Offie i już ten najbardziej oczekiwany – Of Montreal. Uprzedzam więc od razu – w tym akapicie będzie dużo pochwał, coś na kształt blow joba na łączach, ochy i achy, wszystko w pełni zasłużone. I jeszcze jedno – ci wszyscy, którzy psioczą, że nie było nic z Satanic Panic In The Attic niech się walą na ryj i ja was zniszczę bo jesteście cienkie Bolki, a w ogóle to się nie znacie ciecie. Prawda jest jedna i nie zna jej strefa 11, ale ja wam powiem – Kevin Barnes ze swoimi ziomalami dał nieziemski koncert, który można uznać za perfekcyjny zaczynając od aspektów wizualnych i szołmeńskich, a na doznaniach czysto muzycznych kończąc. Rządziły kawałki z dwóch ostatnich płyt, do tego znalazł się chyba z jeden utwór z zapowiadanego na bodajże wrzesień nowego krążka i muszę przyznać, że dobór materiału był naprawdę znakomity. Z powierzchni ziemi zmiotło w zasadzie wszystko, lecz największe oklaski należą się niesamowitemu "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal", tuż przed którym, przy akompaniamencie "October Is Eternal", Kevin został ogolony. Mógłbym tutaj jeszcze dużo napisać o fantastycznej naturalności zespołu, dwóch co raz przebierających się i biegających po scenie (i nie tylko) mimach, genialnych strojach, świetnych wizualizacjach i mojej radości z każdego utworu, który zagrali, ale to trochę nie ma sensu. Of Montreal walnęli pierwszorzędny show, co do którego nie ma za bardzo na co narzekać. Może mogłoby być trochę dłużej, może to, może sramto, ale w sumie czy w tamtej chwili czegoś mi brakowało? Zdecydowanie nie. Zrobiłem w majtki, a nie zdarza mi się to często.

Po Montrealach nastała krótka przerwa na odpoczynek i jakieś piwko, po której to udałem się Dick 4 Dick. Ci, podobnie jak Mitch & Mitch funkcjonują w powszechnej opinii jako zjawisko koncertowe, którego nie można przegapić, więc jako że nadarzyła się okazja, nie omieszkałem jej wykorzystać. Pod namiotem Offensywy zastałem wylewający się z niego tłumu, lecz podjęliśmy wspólnie z Agatką decyzję o przedarciu się do środka. Daleko nie zaszliśmy, a tłum okręcał nas jak chciał, ale weszliśmy. A Dicki dały niezły koncert, trochę takie electro, ale jednak bardziej rock, a do tego taki trochę zabawny i jeszcze w takich interesujących strojach. Piosenki były oczywiście o dickach, wizualizacje też. Było ok, choć spodziewałem się czegoś więcej.

W tym momencie miałem iść z ciekawości na Kammerflimmer Kollektief, ale ktoś mi powiedział że w tamtej eksperymentalnej salce ścisk i duchota, a w ogóle to zespół taki sobie, więc zostałem zaciągnięty na Hey. Zespół, którego nie znam, do którego nigdy mnie nie ciągnęło, więc i na koncert poszedłem trochę od niechcenia. Były jakieś szlagiery, które nawet ja kojarzyłem, Nosowska w jednym z utworów zapomniała tekstu i generalnie to odniosłem wrażenie, że to nie jest zespół na tego typu festiwal. Wystarczy wspomnieć, że po kilku utworach zdecydowaliśmy się ewakuować bo nikogo z nas Hey nie kręcił.

Przyszedł czas na drugi najbardziej wyczekiwany koncert tegorocznego Offa, czyli Caribou. Znowu bez rozczarowań. Nawet jeśli uciekły gdzieś melodie z zeszłorocznej Andorry, to szalony szoł na dwie perki zachwycił każdego i nie słyszałem ani jednej opinii by komuś się ten występ nie podobał, bądź nawet uznał go za przeciętny. Snaith dał pierwsza klasa koncert - grał głównie materiał z dwóch ostatnich krążków (nie pamiętam za bardzo Up In Flames więc nie wiem co z tego było) i w wydaniu live udało mu się uniknąć sztampowego odgrywania jak pan Bóg przykazał, a bardziej porwał się w psychodeliczne odjazdy i w takiej konwencji zdecydowanie się spełnił.

Zwieńczeniem dnia miało być "zagraj to jeszcze raz" czyli szkocka ekipa z Mogwai, którą było mi już dane słyszeć cztery lata temu w Warszawie. Niestety grali głównie utwory nowsze, przez co zabrakło kawałków z pierwszych trzech płyt, lecz usłyszany wreszcie na godziwej jakości nagłośnieniu "Mogwai Fear Satan" sprawił, że cieszyłem się jak małe dziecko i warto było przeczekać tę całą resztę nie wiadomo jakich smętów i pierdół z ostatniej płyty. Poza tym uradowało "Haunted By A Freak" z nieco niedocenionego Happy Songs For Happy People, a także przyzwoite "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong". Także momenty były, aczkolwiek całościowo tak sobie, za bardzo przynudzali. W ogóle smutna sprawa bo zamiast atakować skondensowanymi ścianami gitarowego hałasu, Szkoci chyba przestawili się na mocno wtórne i nijakie pitu pitu, z którego nic nie wynika. Nie tego oczekiwałem.

Chciało się jeszcze iść na Dat Politics, ale nie starczyło sił, także Mogwaie zakończyły mój pierwszy, zdecydowanie udany, dzień festiwalu. W nocy solidnie lało, na szczęście namiot przetrwał. Rano, udało mi się dobić do prysznica, a do tego dodam, że miałem przyjemność cieszyć się ciepłą wodą. W każdym razie na 13:15 postanowiłem wybrać się na Rotofobię i Snowman. Z niewiadomych przyczyn nikt inny nie chciał ze mną iść.

Z tych dwóch, zaledwie półgodzinnych koncertów to Roto spisali się lepiej. Widziałem ich ostatnio 3 lata temu na Chłodnej i o ile wtedy była to gówniana kapelka z lansiarskim wizerunkiem, to dzisiaj pozostało tylko to drugie. Seba maluje sobie oczy, Szymon się blazuje, a siedzący za perką Arkus jakby trochę do nich nie pasował, jednak niech wam ta oprawa nie przesłoni naprawdę obiecującej muzycznej treści. W każdym razie mają coraz lepszy repertuar ("Muszę Już Iść" czy chociażby dostępne na płytce Offsesje, wyśmienite transowe "Nite"), a do tego Seba śmiało udaje się w stronę gitarowego szumu i hałasu, w związku z czym wybaczam mu zerowe teksty i wokal. Nie zagrali mojej ulubionej "Warszawy" i starego szlagieru "Jeden Dzień", lecz i tak 20 z tych 30 minut mogę określić jako bardzo dobre, dlatego na przekór wszystkim trzymam za nich kciuki i wyglądam ich debiutu. Z kolei Snowman, który jeszcze 2 lata temu w Stodole miło mnie zaskoczył i zdradzał spory potencjał, na Offie nie pokazał niczego ciekawego, robiąc wyraźny krok wstecz, w związku wychodzący we wrześniu ich debiutancki album nie interesuje mnie nic a nic.

Po drobnej przerwie, w trakcie której okazało się, że baza gastronomiczna Mysłowic zdecydowanie nie sprostała 11 tysiącom wygłodniałych "miłośników muzyki alternatywnej", udałem się na Renton. Bez znajomości płyty, jedynie z głęboko zakorzenioną miłością do "Walk Aside" wkroczyłem do namiotu Offensywy. Było świetnie - bardzo dobre przebojowe piosenki bez nadęcia, niesłychanie naturalny i odrobinę stremowany zespół, plus żywo reagująca, "uświadomiona" publika. I w zasadzie zabawne, że taki zwyczajny koncert, bez jakichkolwiek fajerwerków i efektów specjalnych, tak dał radę. Widać, zadziałała siła dobrego materiału, a i te 40 minut, które dali im organizatorzy wydaje się w tym kontekście idealnym czasem trwania. Jedno z milszych zaskoczeń festiwalu.

Z namiotu poleciałem szybko na główną scenę na koncert Baaby. Oj, jakże oni się spisali! Bez dwóch zdań jeden z najlepszych koncertów jakie widziałem na Offie. Rozbrykany, rozimprowizowany, pełen humoru set, w którym Macio Moretti z zespołem śmiało mieszał elektronikę z jazzem, rockiem i kto wie czym jeszcze. Przy tym cała ta wielogatunkowość nie przełożyła się na wydumane, ambitne twory dla nikogo, a raczej tworzyła niesłychaną mieszankę, niemal dla każdego. Do tego warto wspomnieć o tym, że jak w pewnym momencie stwierdził Moretti "pozwalają sobie na za wiele", przez co cały koncert przypominał bardziej zabawę dźwiękiem paru kumpli, a nie sztampowe odegranie materiału z kilku płyt, co sprawiło, że nie sposób było się źle bawić na tym koncercie. Oj, dali radę - polecam każdemu kto będzie miał kiedykolwiek okazję, można śmiało lecieć bez znajomości płyt.

Wrodzona ciekawość kusiła mnie na koncert Czesław Śpiewa, ale oszukali mnie bo Czesław nie tylko śpiewał, ale i grał! Do tego zapanował przy scenie leśnej iście jarmarczny nastrój, więc uciekliśmy na piwko, by w spokoju odczekać na koncert Menomeny. Choć przyznam jedno - słyszałem kątem ucha jeden utwór Czesława i nie było to takie złe, więc może kiedyś przy okazji... W każdym razie około 20 znowu znalazłem się pod sceną leśną by zobaczyć jak tam sobie Menomena radzi. I Am the Fun Blame Monster nie znam (wstyd!), ale już Friend And Foe opanowałem całkiem nieźle, więc najbardziej radowały mnie właśnie fragmenty tejże płyty ze świetnym "Wet And Rusty" na czele. Jednak generalnie setlista odznaczała się totalnym brakiem słabych punktów, wszystko miłe, niebanalne indie pioseneczki. Zespół chyba odrobinę stremowany, ale uśmiechnięty i wyraźnie zadowolony z odbioru i ilości osób pod sceną. Coś tam zresztą napomknęli, że niedawno mieli we Francji mega drętwą publikę, a tu taka miła odmiana. Wiadomo. W każdym razie bardzo poprawnie, lecz nic więcej.

Przyszedł wreszcie czas, żeby po czymś solidnie pojechać i tymi szczęśliwcami jest zespół British Sea Power, przez co niektórych pieszczotliwie nazywany British Ssie Pałę. Określani jako jedna z największych gwiazd festiwalu, dali bezbarwny, nudny koncert, przy którym najsłabsze momenty Mogwaia jawiły się jako arcyciekawe. Scena przyozdobiona jakimiś gałązkami (ekolodzy?!) i iście stadionowe, nijakie brzmienie. Moja lalka stwierdziła, że to trochę takie U2, tyle że ze słabym repertuarem. W sumie, teoretycznie debiut BSP był fajny, dwa następne krążki też ujdą, a jak przyszło co do czego, to z koncertu zapamiętam jedynie "Waving Flags" i jeszcze jeden kawałek niedługo po, tyle że i to były momenty mocno przeciętne. No ale na tle reszty to były wieeelkie skoki jakościowe. Sła-bia-ki.

James Chance mnie nie obchodził bo jestem ignorantem, więc nim się jeszcze skończyło British Ssie Pałę, poleciałem pod scenę eksperymentalną by chwilkę tam posiedzieć i odpocząć, a przy okazji zająć sobie miejsce na koncert Jacaszka o północy. Prawdą okazało się, że scena ta, umiejscowiona w małej salce, to istny koszmar i test wytrzymałościowy dla najtwardszych, ale dałem radę. Tradycyjnie, w zgodzie z programem festiwalu, równo o północy na scenie pojawił się Jacaszek wraz ze wspomagającą go dwójką muzyków - skrzypce i wiolonczela. Wszystko zostało odegrane niemal identycznie jak na Trenach (przy okazji, gdyby ktoś nie czytał, tutaj moja recka) zabrakło jedynie "żywego" wokalu, musieliśmy się zadowolić takowym z lapka Michała. Zapanowała senna, melancholijna atmosfera, chociaż nóż w serce pajacom, którzy gdzieś tam z tyłu gadali. Pewne innowacje w postaci mocniejszego bitu czy lekko zmienionej aranżacji pojawiły się dopiero w dwóch ostatnich utworach - "Martwej Ciszy" i "Rytm To Nieśmiertelność II" i chwała Jacaszkowi za to. Tzn. nie żeby reszty źle się słuchało i miał jakieś zarzuty, ale nieco zabrakło, choćby delikatnych, ucieczek od albumowych pierwowzorów. Tym niemniej rispekt, jak dla mnie doskonałe zwieńczenie festiwalu.

W planie miałem jeszcze L.U.C.a i Rahima oraz Maxa Tundre, lecz niestety nie te lata i sił zabrakło. Trochę szkoda, choć ponoć ci pierwsi dali słaby gig, no ale Max z kolei to koncertowy pewniak. W każdym razie wypadałoby jakoś podsumować, więc powiem tak - zdecydowanie warto, widzimy się w przyszłym roku. Aha i jeszcze jedno: Off Festival >> Heineken Opener.

No i w końcu piszę relację z wydarzenia o którym trąbiłem ostatnie dwa miesiące. Pojechałem, zobaczyłem, piszę. Piszę bo byłem a byłem bo musiałem. Musiałem bo Off w tym roku zapowiadał się wyjątkowo i taki był.

Off Festival rozpoczął się 8 sierpnia. Przez dwa dni na 5 scenach można było zobaczyć około 50 wykonawców. Trzeciego dnia odbył się jeden koncert Iron and Wine. Wszystko odbywało się w Mysłowicach w miejscu zwanym Słupna Park. Była to trzecia edycja tego festiwalu, którego pomysłodawcą jest Artur Rojek. Z roku na rok widać coraz większy progres jeżeli chodzi o wykonawców i organizację. Miałem jechać na dwie poprzednie edycje, ale dopiero ta trzecia nie pozostawiła mi wyboru. Musiałem.

Piątek. Tygodnia koniec i początek. Wyjazd z Mikołowa do Katowic, z Katowic to Myslovitz. Miło, że blisko bo transport mnie kosztował 4 zł w jedną stronę. Lokowanie na Polu Namiotowym poszło sprawnie. Rozbijanie namiotu szybko, ale wcześniej Mocarz. I w tym miejscuuu napiszę o polu namiotowym. Kameralne, podzielone segmentami, ale do tojasa daleko. Praktycznie to fajnie na nim było, tylko te odległości do sracza czy na sam festiwal. Jeżeli chodzi o żarło. To Biedronka Rulez. Czyli na żarciu można było także nieźle zaoszczędzić. Pogoda. Rozczarowanie! Miał być grad a nie było! A tak na serio to już jestem zahartowany i nie przeszkadza mi burza, deszcz, śnieg.

Pierwszy dzień zacząłem od poznania obszaru festiwalowego. Piwo było, żarcie było, pamiątki były, sracze były. Generalnie git. Afro Kolektyw. Pierwszy gig, który widziałem. W namiocie gorąco. Przez te 30 min opierania barierki zdążyłem się nieźle spocić. Nasze polskie hip-hopowe nie wiadomo co dało nawet fajny koncert. Chcieli grać dłużej niż pół godziny, ale nie było szans. W ogóle koncerty na Offie były tak rozplanowane, że w zasadzie można było zobaczyć wszystko. Oczywiście nakładało się parę koncertów na siebie, ale nie było możliwości by nie zobaczy Mogwaia, Clinica, Menomene itd. Miało to także złe strony. Koncerty do bardzo późnych pór i zero bisów. Po Afro Kolektywie udaliśmy się z kompanem pod scenę Biedronka na występ Mocarza. Ogólnie z piwem było ciężko i każdy musiał główkować. Na terenie festiwalu lanych Lech był za 4 zł. Jeżeli chodzi o cenę to nie tak tragicznie, ale wiecie jak o z piwem lanym na takich festiwalach. Nieopodal była biedronka. Ceny i wybór fajny, ale nie dość, że piwo ciepłe to jeszcze nigdzie się go nie napijesz. Na festiwal z nim nie wejdziesz. Tam jedno piwo by się dało przemycić, ale szkoda zachodu dla jednego browara. Po drugie na ulicach policji sporo. Trzeba szukać miejscówek bo do namiotu daleko.

Znowu wróciłem do namiotu offensywy. Grały Muchy. Dookoła wszyscy bo to był pierwszy konkretny koncert tego dnia. Na dodatek lunęła ulewa i każdy wbijał pod namiot. Czwórka indie rokowców z Poznania wyszło w sztormiakach. Koncert tak pół na pół. Dobre momenty gdy grali utwory z Terroromansu. Te nowe piosenki zupełnie słabe. Gdy grali Państwa-Miasta słyszeć można było: "nie to nudne już jest". Zgadzam się, zupełny brak polotu w porównaniu z takim "Najważniejszym Dniem" czy "Zapachem Wrzątku". Gdy zaczęli grać bis wyszedłem by nie spóźnić się na of Montreal. Przestało padać akurat i wyszło nawet słońce. Sam koncert of Montreal był zajebisty. Chyba najlepszy na całym festiwalu. Kolorowe wizualizacje, ciekawe stroje, wystrój Barnesa i golenie wąsika to tylko część atrakcji z tego wyjątkowego koncertu. Większa część setlisty pochodziła z "Hissing Fauna, Are You Destroyer?" co jest całkiem na plus. Generalnie było mocno tanecznie. Bardziej tanecznie niż nawet jak byłem na LCD Soundsystem. Barnes dodatkowo zachowywał się jak Matt Bellamy tylko bez patosu. Zaraz po of Montreal miał zacząć się mój najważniejszy koncert. Chodzi o Clinic. By mieć zajebistą miejscówkę urwałem się z końcówki of Montreal. Clinic nie grał na scenie głównej. Na początku było to dla mnie dziwne, teraz rozumiem tą decyzję. Scena leśna najlepiej oddawała ich muzykę. Koncert był bardzo dobry. Połowa utworów z Do It druga połowa to największe hity. Przez cały czas ostre pogo co nawet było czasami śmieszne. Większość nie znała ich muzy i najzabawniejsze było jak zaczynali pogować przy Free Not Free a tu nagle zmiana na sielnakowość a tłum nie wie co robić... Skończyli grać a ja czułem mały niedosyt. Odwróciłem się by iść do sracza (Na Offie nie było praktycznie bisów) gdy nagle wyszli i usłyszałem pierwsze riffy Cement Mixer. Wiedziałem w tym momencie, że jestem najszczęśliwszym człowiekiem Świata. Uczucie podobne do tego jak Milan wygrywa LM, dostajesz 3 z fizyki, zaliczasz parę balonów itd. Istne doznanie absolutu. Po Clinicu chwila na złapanie oddechu bo przede mną jeszcze parę godzin zajebistej muzy. Poszedłem pod scenę Główną by zobaczyć pierwszy raz w życiu Hey. Nie powalili mnie. Nie zaintrygowali. Typowe polskie granie. Lubię trochę Hey, grali hity, ale nic szczególnego w moim życiu się nie zmieniło po tym występie. Na dodatek Nosowska zapomniała tekstu w jednej z piosenek. Gdy zaczęli grać następna piosenkę gdzie tekst był anglojęzyczny mój kompan skwitował to tak: "a po angielsku to pamięta...". Koniec Hey.

Musiałem iść do tojasa, musiałem. Kolejka jak ch... w sensie długa. Siedzę, w zasadzie lewituje i słyszę Caribou. Caribou widziałem przez jakieś pół godziny i to z daleka bo nie miałem sił przedzierać się przez błoto pod scenę. Grali na prawdę porywająco. Dla wielu to właśnie Caribou dało najlepszy koncert. 15 minut do Mogwai. Dla mnie i mego kompana to miał być koncert dnia (Dla mnie na równi z Clinic). Ludzi w ciul. Sam Rojas wyszedł ich zapowiedzieć. Ubogo w słowach, ale jak sam stwierdził - "nie ma co gadać, sam czekam na ten występ". Wychodzi Mogwai i zaczynają zabijać ludzi dźwiękami. Oczywiście tylko tych, którzy ich znają i wielbią. Bo wielu przyszło ich tylko zobaczyć bo w tv mówili, że to największa gwiazda. I dlatego słychać było ziewy itp dźwięki. Pewnie się zawiedli, że nikt nie śpiewał. Przy pierwszym utworze na scenę wtargnął jakiś maniak by zaprezentować się w chwili glorii gdy obok niego stali Szkoci z Mogwai i patrzyło się w tą stronę 10 tysięcy ludzi. Dla wielu to był punkt kulminacyjny tego koncertu. Mogwai dla mnie był świetny. Trans, trans, kurwa trans. Zagrali parę piosenek z nadchodzącej płyty i parę hitów. Świetnie było. Wkręciłem się w ich klimaty. 1:15 minut stania w jednym miejscu z bolejącą kostka dało swoje. Byłem nie miłosiernie zmęczony, że ledwo doczołgałem się do namiotu. Trochę mi było żal, że nie mam sił na Waglewskich czy też Dat Politics. Jednak to były takie pory, że nawet zdrowi nie dawali rady wytrzymać.

Dzień drugi. Deszcz padał dalej. Dlaczego nie ma gradu? Szedłem na Rentona, ale po drodze zaszliśmy na żer i potem czekaliśmy jeszcze 15 minut na busa by przejechać jeden przystanek. Zaszliśmy na Scene MySpace. Najbardziej śmiesznie żałosna scena festiwalu. Ulokowana na boisku do siatkówki obok placu zabaw. Scena ograniczająca się do białego namiotu ogrodowego. Nagłośnienie tak chujowe, że nawet stojąc pod kolumną nadal słyszałeś pierdy spod sceny głównej. Dobra, nieważne. Grał Kawałek Kulki. Do czasu jak śpiewała babka szło jeszcze tego słuchać. Poszedłem zobaczyć tego całego Czesława. Podobno live jest zajebisty. Sobie pomyślałem, że skoro wkurwia mnie na płycie to będzie miał u mnie plusa za występy live. I co? Ci wszyscy ludzie doszczętnie mi obrzydzili Czesława. Jeszcze grał te swoje piosenki o żabie itd. Lepiej to brzmiało niż na płycie, ale nie idzie tego na dłużej słuchać. Tego nie powinno być na Offie. Prędzej Open'er. Poza tym te bycie zabawnym na siłę a la Mozil. Robił z siebie idiotę w moich oczach. Czasami mu się udało powiedzieć coś zabawnego a czasami mówił, że cieszy się, że są drzewa albo chciał coś powiedzieć, ale ostatecznie nie powiedział bo zapomniał. Dość o nim. Po tym koncercie postanowiłem odwiedzić w końcu Scenę Structura Experimental. Akurat muzykę starał się preparować Karol Schwarz All Stars. Scena mieściła się w jakimś małym pomieszczeniu. W środku zaduch i sielankowe nastroje, wszyscy leżą i słuchają tego jazgotu. Mimo mojej tolerancji dla muzyki alternatywnej musiałem wyjść po 3 utworach na dodatek kazali nam wstać z zolu.

Będąc na zewnątrz usiałem na ławce i kontem oka obserwowałem ten cały Izrael' 83. Będę szczery. Nie lubię reagge, nie lubię dredów i nie lubię piosenek o Babilonie. Z resztą ile można słuchać tekstów w stylu "naród musi wolny być" ? Wróciłem pod scenę MySpace. Była nieopodal, za ławką. Był akurat występ Karpaty Magiczne/The Band of Endless Noise. Nie zaintrygowali mnie. Poszedłem na Menomene, reszta wolała zostać na Czesławie again. Menomena grała fajnie. Zagadywali w stylu: "Hi I'm Justin" i opowiadali o sobie trochę w czasie gdy naprawiana była perkusja. Cieszyli się, że są w Polsce. Fajne chopki. Zagrali największe hity i się zmyli pozostawiając po sobie miłe wspomnienie. Dla wielu koncert był bez fajerwerków, ale co oni mogą wiedzieć jak wtedy byli na tym boskim Duńczyku. Po Menomenie chciałem wbić na Singapore Slang. Fajne dźwięki szło usłyszeć spod namiotu, ale nie dało się wbić za chuja. No to poszedłem na British Sea Power. Ci to dali czadu na prawdę. Jak ktoś ci mówił, że było to słabe to znaczy, że chuja wie i doznaje przy tekstach w stylu "uciekła babeczka z miasteczka". Rozkręcali się z minuty na minute. Ostatni utwór to była istna miazga. Koncert kończyli w istny musowym stylu. Nie zabrakło powiewających flag. Scena ozdobiona w roślinki. Było supcio. I tym występem zakończyłem Off Festiwal 2008.

Podsumowując. Było fajnie mimo, że kulałem jak pomocnik Doktora Frankensteina i, że mnie wszystko bolało. W ogóle przeczytajcie drugą nie oficjalną recenzję Off Festiwal. Ludzie byli fajni, nietypowi bo muzyka nie typowa. Miłe wrażenie po Offie miałem. W niedzielę na Iron and Wine nie byłem bo nie miałem biletu, suchych skarpetek i sił. Do zobaczenie za rok.

Somehow they seem to be on everyone's radar right now. At least on those of the music press. There is something quite compelling in the mixture of the fuzziness of bands like Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade and an Anthony-voice. Their music is so weird that it catches your ears whether you want it or not. Let's say they have refined the art of usual country/folktunes combined with Hayden Thorpe's unusual voice that sounds like Anthony with a grater in his throat (which isn't a bad thing in this case). Underlined, assisted or displaced with bassist Tom Flemings full and heavenly voice they play with dissonances that sound just right. Whether that formula works on an album is open to the individual (I am convinced, though) but this quirky music is definitely a holiday from "been there done that"-bands and should at least have the chance to be heard. And apart from that, it gives you the chills to have them delivering joyful songs like "Devil's Crayon" (sang by both). How the hell they got two exceptional singers in one group is a miracle and a blessing for the world.

Bodi Bill

Indie and Electro are no longer two separate genres. It is doubtful that they ever were but especially in the last couple of years they blurred into bands like Klaxons, Hot Chip and Who made Who. Bodi Bill from Berlin are on the same path and they do a quite good job getting back the baton of good electro for Germany. The debut of Fabian Fenk and Alex Amoon is a mixture of electro and folk tunes but instead of mingling them, like the previously mentioned bands, they just put a couple of folksongs and a couple of electrosongs on their album. It seems a bit schizophrenic and maybe they can only win with that concept because Indiefans listen to both but fact is that both attempts are well made. Personally, I miss the concept of the album and probably would have welcomed it if they would have made a double record or at least made the songs more homogenous but maybe that's just me and I should stop being so addicted to coherent albums.

All in all, their songs are fantastic and with a title like "I like Holden Caufield" you should get some appraisal (although I don't like Holden Caufield).

Menomena

This band isn't new on the market, they haven't even put out a single or a record lately, but on my usual journeys through myspace I discovered them and was smitten. It seems as if it's the typical misery of a band that is making great music more or less in the underground, while younger bands that sound very much like them are making thousands of quids with that sound a couple of years later and are called "new and fresh".

It is obvious that a lot of psychedelic electro bands have listened to some Menomena. Although Menomena deliver much more than psychedelic dance pop. They rather combine this sound with the eerie and heavyweight atmosphere of Radiohead and even some jazz elements. There is a sweet melancholy throughout the music that is in constant battle with the grandiose musical elements of a sparse piano and disturbing sound bites. All that combined with a voice that is canny and resentful at the same time is an impressive experience for the listener. Not easy to swallow but oh so good for every music fan who likes to be surprised.

I watched this surf/skate video and I fell in love...

The Auditori stage is imposingly widescreen for the two-piece of Scout and drummer Kristian Goddard, but they proved that they are not daunted by such environs when supporting The Stooges at London's Royal Festival Hall last year (as part of the Jarvis Cocker-curated Meltdown festival). And as soon as Scout unleashes her expressive voice on the traditional couplets that make up the intro to "Do You Want To Be Buried With My People?", it becomes apparent that this is a perfect venue for her - the excellent concert-hall acoustics giving wings to her already soaring voice. She never fails to surprise with her choice of covers and follows "Good To Me" (with its bizarre woodstockhenge hair metal intro) by making TLC's "No Scrubs" her own. Scout is all about the highs and lows of being under love's spell, and in "Hide And Seek" she references the sweetheart fever that seems to afflict her, going from sparse and melancholic love song to attaining Nirvana.

"Kiss" gets the biggest cheer of the set so far, unsurprising as it's the closest thing Scout has had to a 'hit single' (helped by the appearance of the Bonnie Prince William of Oldham on the recorded version).
The past few times I've seen Scout Niblett play I've been left unfulfilled when she fails to take a turn behind the drumkit, but tonight she delivers by temporarily ejecting Goddard and enthusiastically beating out "Your Beat Kicks Back Like Death"... We're all gonna die! We don't know when... We don't know how...
The rest of the songs are all Niblett highlights - some more favourites from "This Fool Can Die Now" sandwiched between two diamonds from her first album. "Wet Road" yearns with love unfulfilled, while "Miss My Lion" is the perfect closer, Scout stomping and wailing to superbly crunching riffs.

Leaving the Auditori I'm happy to see that the rain that had niggled throughout the day has pissed off (only to return with a vengeance at the very end of the festival). There's only enough time to catch Devastations end their set with a menacing, noisy "Rosa", played with that scuzzy louche cool that seems peculiar to Australians-in-Berlin (cf. Nick Cave "The Heroin Years", Angus Andrew of Liars). Their most recent album "Yes, U" blows hot and cold for me but here I find the swamp monster that lurks within their bombastic baroque-goth.

It's then over to the Estrella Damm stage to see Okkervil River, who'd drawn one of the biggest crowds I'd yet experienced at Primavera. The opening salvo of "The President's Dead / Black" sets the tone for the upbeat crowd-pleasing show that is to follow. My first hearing of Okkervil River was "Black Sheep Boy", the melancholy of the Tim Hardin-inspired tracks appealing to me most (and I'm a sucker for the William Schaff artwork too) - so l found last year's "The Stage Names" initially too 'big band' with Sheff's sometimes tortured words incongruous to the upbeat backing, but here under a grey Barcelona sky those songs proved much more infectious. Halfway through, Sheff introduces "It Ends With A Fall" as a tribute to The Wrens guitarist Charles Bissell (playing his last show with the band) - then jokingly fires him on stage. The rest of the performance rocks energetically, hitting a peak with "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" flowing straight into "For Real", which really gets the audience jumping. They end with early song "Westfall" sung in Spanish, a fitting finale which the local fans really take to heart.

Dirty Projectors have created a lot of buzz over the past year, Dave Longstreth built up as some sort of weird genius. It's not for me - maybe it's too wilfully obscure or just too pop - but they provide some minutes of distraction, if not just for bassist Angel Deradoorian crooning melodies wearing what looked to be denim jogging shorts...

Back to the well-visited ATP stage for Kinski, who sometimes come across as Sonic Youth from an alternate dimension - Chris Martin the floppy-haired guitar virtuoso, Lucy Atkinson the hard rockin' female bassist, guitarist/flautist Matthew Reid-Schwartz in the Lee Ranaldo role, and Barret Wilke providing the Shelley-esque pounding. And sure Kinski are heavily indebted to their East Coast brethren (song titles like "Daydream Intonation" all but give it away), but these Seattle Sub Pop-ers also mix in a healthy dose of psych-kraut-space rock that coalesces into a riff-heavy brew that somehow stands apart from most of the post/psych/kraut/space-rock that abounds in these times.

Inbetween songs it's announced that today is bassist Atkinson's birthday which causes the audience to break into a Spanish-accented "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear... erm.. Kinski!!" The band clearly enjoys themselves, as do we all.

After catching a few songs by saxophone-fronted rock-'n-sample band Menomena (who appeal on first hearing, despite giving such prominence to that feared symbol of all things j&!z), it's a quickmarch back down to the ATP stage to secure a prime position for being showered in the minimalist-rock-greatness that is Shellac. I'm glad it's not too hard to get a good vantage point upfront early on, because I later turn to see the crowd massed into all the available space, tailing up the path back to the main festival site. They come because Shellac is the best godamn live band I & many others here have ever had the pleasure of sharing a room with. Prior to their performance I'd been quite open to the idea that Shellac would not necessarily produce the highlight of my weekend - there'd certainly been other contenders - but who was I kidding? That perfect blend of mass, velocity and time knocks me over every time.
It's the first time I've seen them rock under the stars (a rare opportunity as Shellac generally have a dislike of festivals, except when the fine folk at ATP are involved) and the experience is just as powerful (even if Steve Albini and Bob Weston are without their custom cabinets, making do instead with more prosaic Marshall and Ampeg stacks).

For all their precision, each show is an improvised performance - no setlists, Albini's vocal adlibbing & caustic wit (in "Prayer To God" he exhorts Baby Jesus to "do your fuckin' job for once"), taking questions from the crowd (this time unsuccessfully handled by Scout Niblett). And we get to hear a new song, sung by Weston and sounding like classic early '90s-vintage Shellac (another new song appears in Paris about a week later - could it be we'll be seeing a new Shellac album before the end of the world?!). It's an amazing set, surely making new acolytes in the crowd of thousands, and (like all Shellac performances I've witnessed) words won't do it justice...

Les Savy Fav are talked up as a crazy live experience (some would go so far as to crown them best live band around - heretics!) and sure enough vocalist Tim Harrington gives the crowd their money's worth - first appearing disguised as a plant before stripping down to a multicoloured leotard and jumping into the audience, running up and down the concrete steps to the right of the ATP stage. The rest of the band rock efficiently behind Harrington's antics, but it seems to me that Les Savy Fav's appeal must be more in their moon-howlin' mad frontman than in their tunes - and in contrast to the masterclass of masa, velocidad & tiempo that went before this only entertains superficially. So it is halfway through their set that I decide to call time on Primavera Sound 2008, heading into the balmy Barcelona night, off to dream my sweet Albini dreams...

There have been some technical problems here at the Stereocache offices (read our parents' house) so we're a little late on this one, but better late than never I say. Especially with a record like this. Lackthereof is the brainchild of Menomena drummer Danny Seim which predates that band by a decent interval (beginning in '97). Your Anchor (Barsuk Records) will be Seim's ninth release under the the nom de rock, the first six of which were distributed freely to personal friends before Filmguerrero put out Christian the Christian (2004) and My Haunted (2008). I say nom de rock because, for all the stuff going on in these tracks, Lackthereof is actually just Seim who plays every instrument on the album and recorded it in his Portland, Or basement.

I'm going to have to generalize a little here based on what I've heard from the Christian the Christian and My Haunted because I've only heard two tracks off of Your Anchor so far: "Choir Practice" and "Last November." Lacktherof tracks won't sound alien to any Menomena fans out there and it should be pretty easy to pick them out of a lineup and say (dramatically if you wished) "that's the song, that's the one made by that dude in Menomena" (especially "Last November", which is just gorgeous) but it is just as easy to see that these albums really wouldn't belong under the band's artistic wings.

Because Lacktherof is one man (who is not obsessive compulsive) there is almost necessarily a little less sonic uniformity. What I mean is that without a band composed of a few guys that have to agree on what sound they want there's just Seim thinking I want to make a song that sounds like this - cue genre jumping or straddling or whatever verb you prefer. Lackthereof allowed Seim to get a little bleepier and faster and way more somber in the past but I can only comment on what I've heard off of Your Anchor so far and that would lead me to expect some great splashy drumming, funky bass and exceptional upbeat choruses.

Miałem do wyboru debiut oraz ich drugi album z 2007 roku. Wybrałem "Przyjaciela i Wroga", po przeczytaniu recenzji debiutu wiedziałem, że są zajebiści. Tylko, zasadnicza sprawa: ile zespołów po debiucie jest zajebistych by przy wydaniu drugiego krążka skończyć jak np The Kooks, które zgnoiłem ja i nie tylko. Dlatego postanowiłem sobie wyrobić zdanie na podstawie drugiej płyty. I wyrobiłem na takie: "Muszę posłuchać debiutu bo kolesie są genialni!".

Friend and Foe to jedna z najlepszych płyt jakie ostatnio ściągałem. Do miana the best ever i had daleko tej płycie, ale warto ją mieć i się nią chwalić. Słuchanie ambitnej muzyki to jest to czego wiele osób w tym kraju nie pojmuje a Menomene do takiej grupy ambitnych można zaliczyć. Ta płyta jest niesamowicie skonstruowana, wciągnęła mnie od pierwszych sekund kiedy ją zarzuciłem. Nawet wrzuciłem ją na mp3 a muszę podkreślić, że na moim mp3, który przechowuje tylko (teraz) albo aż (long time ago) 1 GB muzy! Są tam tylko najlepsze płyty, których obecnie słucham. Ostatnim czasy nie leciało na nim nic innego niż Friend and Foe.

Główną ich zaletą w moim odczuciu jest ta ich melodyczność i wciągające aranżacje utworów. Ta płyta nie ma piosenek najlepszych i najgorszych. Każda piosenka jest zajebiście fajowa. Fajny wokal, fajne klawisze, fajne trąbki, fajna perkusja. Można bez końca. Gdybym miał ich porównywać do jakiegoś zespołu to byłby to Arcade Fire. A Kanadyjczycy są w moim absolutnym TOP5 International bands.

Friend and Foe to jest odpowiedź na pytanie: "Czego by tu dziś posłuchać by nie zgłupieć i nie stracić mózgu". Szczerze polecam tą płytę, jak znajdę czas to napisze recenzje debiutu. Ale już teraz polecam i debiut. Cała dyskografia Amerykanów na plus. Tym czasem ocena: 8/10 dla drugiej płytki. Warto jeszcze zwrócić uwagę na fajną okładkę.

P.S. Ten jeden gigabajt w creativie mi wystarcza do statusu happy.

Und letzten Freitag entdeckte ich das wunderbare Album Friend and Foe von Menomena. Mag sein, dass ich damit sowas wie ein musikalischer Spätzünder bin und alle Welt eh schon weiß, wie geil dieses Album ist - wie auch alle (Berliner) Welt bestimmt schon weiß, dass es eine herrlich heimelige BVG-Fähre von Kladow nach Wannsee gibt.

Für den Rest aber möchte ich hiermit ein Füllhorn voll des Lobes und der spontanen Liebe ausschütten über Friend and Foe. Vom ersten Takt an fängt mich dieses Album ein und lässt mich auch vor dem letzten Takt nicht raus aus seiner vielschichtigen musikalischen Welt; man muss einfach alle Lieder in einem Rutsch hören und genießen, Songhopping kommt mir da echt nicht in den Sinn.

Auf last.fm kann man hier alle Songs von Friend and Foe komplett hören. Es lohnt sich wirklich. Daher von mir auch keine Anspieltipps, nur den einen: Durchhören!
