This video alone is going to make me a lot of
money. Why? Because I used to only send out one
email promo for each affiliate promotion I was
doing. Michael showed me in this video how

In an earlier post, on 20 January, I informed you good people that the UCI had asked the Monaco Federation, from whom Rasmussen has license, to begin disciplinary action against the Danish cyclist.

In a statement yesterday, they announced that they had also requested that Rasmussen receive the maximum ban of two years:

Harsh.

Fair enough- missing test after test after test is most definitely suspicious. But receiving the same ban as someone actually found guilty of doping??

Yes, bans are necessary to clean up the sport. However, I can't help but think that giving the same sentence to those who miss tests to those who are caught doping, is a little bit unfair. Although it is quite possible to argue that missed tests and failed tests constitute the same thing. Thats another days argument!!

What is obvious, and has been for some time now, is that doping sanctions and doping controls need to be completely revised. Aside from the new 'biological passport' system, very little has changed regarding anti-doping measures. Perhaps instead of concentrating on the war between themselves and Grand Tour organisers, the UCI should look at how to conduct effective doping controls. Maybe then we'd have a clean sport.

*Word of warning* I've already decided my next post is going to be a 'If I was in charge of the UCI anti-doping programme....' style post.

Be prepared- it isn't going to be pretty.

Rasmussen ,as I'm sure you're all aware, was removed from the 2007 Tour de France, while in the leader's yellow jersey, by his own Rabobank team for violating the team's 'internal code'. He was subsequently fired from the Dutch squad and has remained teamless since.

Rasmussen originally denied any wrong-doing. He had claimed to have been training in Mexico during the month of June. A statement from Italian commentator David Cassani saying he had met Rasmussen in the Italian Dolomites on the 13th/14th June was his downfall and the cause of his removal from the Tour.

However, in a press conference in November, Rasmussen came clean and admitted he had deliberately lied about his whereabouts during the month of June, citing difficulties in his marriage as the reason. As a result, he was issued with a written warning on 30 November 2007, which as of the 4th January 2008, became a recorded warning.

This now means Rasmussen has three so- called 'recorded warnings' in 18 months. This, under UCI regulations, means he now will face disciplinary action from the Monaco federation from whom he has a licence. Rasmussen is facing a possible two year ban.

I have yet to find an English article on this. The article I have is in Danish but it comes from the website in charge of Rasmussen's own personal site so it should be fairly sound:

Well.

I can't say I'm surprised. Since November's press conference, its been a safe- bet that he would face some kind of disciplinary action. And as for a two year ban? At 33, Rasmussen may as well retire.

Ok. This is where I get to stick my oar in!

My own personal opinion on the whole 'Rasmussen affair': Yes, I do believe Rasmussen deserves to be sanctioned. He may never have tested positive but he's done enough(i.e whereabouts issues) to raise sufficient suspicion that he was up to something dodgy. Lets just get that out of the way.

My major gripe is, and this applies to all teams and riders not just Rasmussen/Rabobank: team accountability. If a rider is looking suspicious, why start them in a Grand Tour or any other race? Rabobank's investigation into the matter concluded that Rasmussen should never have been allowed to start the Tour. They were well aware of this when selecting their team in June or whenever it was. But they started him anyway, well aware of the potential trouble it could cause.

Yes, Rasmussen broke the rules. Yes, he deserves to be sanctioned for failing to report his whereabouts. But does he deserve to be held completely accountable for causing that debacle in July? No, I think not. People seem to forget that Rabobank started him with full knowledge of his 'whereabouts issues'. Therefore in my opinion they are just as accountable for that particular farce as Rasmussen is.

I've just read over that. It sounds like I'm defending Rasmussen.

 Which I'm not. Good luck to him. At the end of the day, its ultimately what he deserves.

Although, guilty secret on my part: I did quite like him up until last year's Tour!

German tv station ARD have backed out of their allegations of blood- doping against four professional cyclists(Boogerd, Menchov, Rasmussen and Totschnig) who have, of course, denied any involvement.

The station said in an announcement today that it was 'not justified and not compatible' with their their 'professional standards' to make such allegations without sufficient evidence.

Make an accusation without a shred of evidence and then go running with your tail between your legs when it starts to look unlikely. As far as anyone knows, the lab have only just been asked to submit documentation about their work to WADA. WADA probably don't even know who's involved yet. Indeed, if anyone is involved. People seem to forget thats its quite possible that that blood bank in Vienna, however suspect it may seem right now, is completely innocent of any wrong- doing.

Wheres the faith, people, wheres the faith??

Multiple news sources have been reporting over the past few days that a blood bank in Vienna is under suspicion of  assisting top athletes with blood doping:

However news reports today are naming athletes who have allegedly visited the lab:

Among those named are two time and current Vuelta champion Denis Menchov and two of his former team mates: Dutchman Michael Boogerd, now retired and Michael Rasmussen, the disgraced Danish almost winner of the 2007 Tour de France. Also implicated, according to news sources is the now also retired former Team Telekom and Gerolsteiner rider Georg Totschnig.

The lab is currently under investigation by WADA.

If proven, this is yet another sad blow to cycling's credibility.

It doesnt bode well for the cyclists involved either:

Denis Menchov was awarded the 2005 Vuelta after Roberto Heras tested positive. He was crowned Vuelta champion once again in 2007.

Michael Boogerd, although now retired, was a great rider in his day winning both the Amstel Gold Race and Paris-Nice along with two stages of the TdF.

Georg Totschnig is another retired TdF stage winner(stage 14, 2005).

Michael Rasmussen needs no explanation. Kicked out of the Tour over 'whereabouts' issues?? Ah yes, I hear you say, that guy.

I sincerely hope none of these riders are involved. Boogerd and Totschnig have left cycling- theres nothing that can be done about them now really. Menchov has the appearance of a worthy champion and Rasmussen, well, whatever he has done, whatever he hasnt done, I'm sure this is another scandal he doesnt need. Providing its false, of course.

But it really is another kick in the face for the cycling world.

Hvis modellen viser sig succesfuld i tests med Michael og han ellers kan holde fingrene fra doping (e.g. lade være med at tage for meget viagra). Så foreslår jeg, at vi indfører den for hele tour-feltet. Så har vi endelig også TV2 og Eurosport med på pornobølgen. Endda med både trekant (trehjulet) sex, børnecykelsex, damecykelsex, gay(herremodeller)sex, olie -og værkstedssex (smør damecyklen ind i olie), flødeskum, etc., etc. Cykelfolket har jo et højt aktivitetsniveau, så her er der rige muligheder for at eksperimentere med forskellige kemiske sammensætninger og medikamenter! Hvis vi henvender os til Brian Mikkelsen med idéen, så tror jeg, at vi skal satse på at fremsætte det som en ny sportsgren. Således at det måske bliver et etape-løb, med enkeltstart, samlet start, måske endda holdtidskørsel og naturligvis bjergetaper og flade etaper, sofacykler, managerspil og hele molevitten. Un petit carton rouge au foot anglais qui, même s’il est le plus passionnat au niveau de la premier league, laisse à désirer côté équipe nationale.Il doit certainement s’agir du prinicpe “grosse tête” ou d’individualité. Avec de tels joueurs, on ne peut qu’obtenir des résultats !!!

In response to the firing of their Tour de France leader Michael Rasmussen during this years tour de France has lead the sponsor Rabobank to create changes in their teams medical requirements.  This has stemmed from the controversy of Michael Rasmussen lying of his where abouts during a team drug test.  During this time he is suspected to be doping which had caused him to have a positive test during his stay in the yellow jersey.  Rabobank has just placed their director of private banking, Harold Knebel in charge of all operations of the cycling team.  It seems to be a blame games within the team of who is to blame.  Rasmussen has said that the team director De Rooy and Breukink the sport director were aware of his where abouts.  Whom ever is to blame it doesn't matter something was illegal done and the result was that the person of which who made the choice to gain an unfair advantage was fired.  In the end I feel as if Rabobank is trying to redirect the team and clean up is tarnished image.
