Yeah yeah I'm always late on this stuff. Sorry, work and school and laziness =)

Excuses for the win. Anywho, I watched. LAST WEEK. Not on YouTube :)

It was a great debate. Very informative, and... I think Jack Layton did a really good job. I loved how Stephen Harper initiated the attack on the Liberal campaign and Stephane Dion; then all of a sudden the other four party leaders completely blasted Harper and the Conservatives for their failure of a government for the past two years. I believe they were right on.

Another thing I believe is that the Conservatives are more and more like the Republicans of the States. Harper and the Conservatives as of yet do not understand the Carbon Tax. I actually got the Liberal campaign booklet and read everything on the Carbon Tax, through every detail and what Dion says was spot on. Although in my last post on the election I said the Carbon Tax was quite useless; I have seen the light! It is a great method to punish those who are to hurt our environment and give back to the people as another benefit. I hope the Conservatives understand this.

Now, another thing I need to add is that... WOW! I am so surprised about Elizabeth May and her Green Party's platform. It's quite amazing I must say. I thought as a special interest party environment and a few other things were all the Green Party had, but to my constant undisputed belief; the Green Party had a lot to offer the average Canadian and Elizabeth May fought on par with all the other party leaders. If I had a second party to vote for other than the NDP, it would be the Green Party all the way.

I found the Bloc Quebecois leader Gille Duceppe quite... How should I say, useless. Although he was right about many things, he just seemed like he was unnecessary on the debate table. Though I found him to say that he would never become Prime Minister an admirable thing. At least he knows where he stands and does not act as if he could topple over all other parties with what there is available to the Bloc at this moment.

Now, Harper just got attacked throughout the debate. Of course he is the current government and that is to be expected; but in such an incredulous amount? That I don't think so. I think Harper and the Conservatives deserved every attack aimed at them. Canada has fallen into deficit and dropped out of one of the best Kyoto protocols and even entered Afghanistan and the Conservatives had the nerve to cut funds to the arts! The arts a major thing to the Canadian people, and the defence or "repair" of Afghanistan was not an interest Canada was so strong to pursue. Canada to many Canadians, myself included has faced away from it's peaceful presence in the world.

The Conservatives have offered no plan for the next government and the people are completely lost about the Conservatives. I am appalled to see many die-hard Conservatives tell me that they're just voting on what the last government was about. I believe Harper should understand what responsibilities he really has. Just because you cut 95, 000 jobs and created 100, 000 is nothing to be proud of. The 95, 000 lost were high paying, good jobs to raise a family on and live a good life. The 100, 000 are labour jobs by working at minimum wage. Harper relied on this so much during the debate, and I was so greatly angered by him just praying on this argument. I don't think he knows exactly what it's like to lose a good job and try to find one on par with the last. Another thing is that the new offenders act by Harper is disgusting. Fourteen year olds should NOT spend life in prison with adults. That is conflicting of the rights of a child.

Only one big thought on the Liberals. I like their campaign a lot; and pragmatically, they have fed off very well from the other parties to improve themselves for today's day and age. But Stephane Dion as the leader is something I do not like. Yes, he is strong in French, but during the debate I could not fully make out whatever he was saying. I think if he wants to see himself as Prime Minister, he needs to improve on his English language skills and better communication with his ideas as I don't think he can speak of them so well as he should. This might be mean, but guys, this is a candidate for the highest position in our country.

Hehehe... Time to comment on my NDP! Jack Layton! I think he might just cut being a good Prime Minister. It seems over the years he has his platform well memorized and it is very beneficial to the average Canadian. His attacks on the Conservatives were very well done. Why? Because he backed it up with what the NDP would do in exchange. I love the health care plan to get more doctors. It is something stolen from Cuba, but then again, if it worked in Cuba, then surely of course, it would work in Canada. The CMA is greatly diminishing potential doctors and it is time to get those oldies to realize that public healthcare is the way to go. Private healthcare is not in the interest of Canada.

The debate was very good, and I wish it was longer. Eight questions were not enough. Especially when immigration was not tackled at all; I think this is a major issue that should have been questioned.

So, how scary can the American recession get for the Indian? Reality check: This evening's rumor was that ICICI is going to be no more. Imagine shutting down all together. So fearful were public reactions that all long distance phone calls suggested people take out all their money from ICICI. Forget minimum deposit; forget accrued charges because of your impulsive actions because what good is maintenance of bank deposits if there's going to be no bank at all. So, for a moment you fear.

Then you try to rationalize with those who fear. Your common sense prompts a thought. Can a bank you first heard of in your economics book in 1996 really shut down? Then it was about learning full forms to score so you mugged it, ICICI: Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India. Over the years I don't know about industrial but it certainly serves as a brilliant personal bank. You pay your internet connection bills, pay your phone recharge vouchers, ask anyone for cash on broke days, send money to people, parents included, shop, watch movies, everything you can think of, ICICI does for me. So now if it just disappeared, I'd go back to the ice age.

People are cautious, the share markets spelling doom. ICICI share prices of 900 rupees, quoted 350 rupees today. Are you scared? Depositors rushed into endless queues to withdraw their hard earned money. The RBI issued a security statement and notices were posted outside all ICICI ATM's stating that ICICI has enough funds to return all depositors funds. I believe ICICI will not liquidate; it's just a passing tide. Obviously I need to believe because else all my NEFT transactions would come to a standstill. I also believe because since young I believed in everything red, my sports house, favorite clothes, football teams, my car colors, the red heart, everything. Today, I understand the consequence of my choices, Ferrari, Manchester United, Hastings House, and ICICI to name a few.

What started out as a red debit card with an understanding with HP, even though I don't own a vehicle, it has come a long way. When the market is bleeding, hold your own, the market will turn. It's a war between the bull and the bear, and when the bear sees red, you know what happens.

The European Union will raise its minimum bank deposit guarantee in a co-ordinated response to the global financial crisis, EU finance ministers announced Tuesday.

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde speaks at a news conference Tuesday following an emergency meeting of EU finance ministers meeting in Luxembourg.(Yves Logghe/Associated Press)Following an emergency meeting in Luxembourg, the ministers of the 27-nation bloc released a joint statement that said they "all commit to take all necessary measures to enhance the soundness and stability of our banking system and to protect the deposits of individual savers."

The change will raise the minimum bank deposit guarantee to $68,160 US for one year.

The amount was selected because it will allow smaller and poorer EU nations to be able to afford the guarantee, but countries are also allowed to set their minimum higher.

Until the outbreak of the credit-crunch crisis, most EU governments had guaranteed consumer savings of up to $27,000 to $34,000.

The announcement is in line with a weekend announcement from Germany, France, Britain and Italy that the EU would act jointly to calm markets and is meant to assure consumers that their savings are safe.

The financial support should be temporary and governments should take care of taxpayers' money, the statement said.

"We are not going to tolerate a Lehman Brothers scenario," said French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, who led the emergency talks, referring to the U.S. investment bank that went bankrupt, setting off a chain of losses at other institutions.

Ministers commit to daily contact

The finance ministers said they would stay in daily contact to discuss the crisis and "ensure a comprehensive and co-ordinated response to the current situation."

The approach will also bolster the national supervision of banks and other financial institutions — especially those that operate across several nations — and curb bonuses for departing chief executives.

The ministers' statement stressed that governments should be able to oust management and that executives of failed companies should not receive "undue benefits."

The seven agreed-to principles reached at the meeting include interventions into ailing financial institutions, protecting the interests of taxpayers and fair competition, and are meant to guide the European Union through the financial turmoil.

But the EU is hampered in taking unified action because while it boasts a single currency in 15 of its 27 member nations, it has no legal powers to intervene in financial markets.

Instead, European national governments have pumped billions of euros into ailing banks and organized takeovers.

Exchanges slipping

European exchanges in London, Paris and Frankfurt have been slipping into the red as investors worry governments are not doing enough to boost banks.

Charlie McCreevy, EU commissioner for internal market and services, left, talks to Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti at the EU finance ministers meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday.(Yves Logghe/Associated Press)Although Europe has tighter banking rules than the U.S., meaning fewer defaults on loans, European banks have invested heavily in American institutions.

Those investments are now effectively worthless, leaving some banks short of funds to meet demand.

Going into the emergency meeting, the EU countries had looked anything but united, said CBC London correspondent Ann McMillan.

Several EU countries had already made independent decisions to raise deposit guarantees and to take measures to combat the financial crisis.

"The European Union has been looking pretty disunited this past week with some countries like Ireland, Germany, Denmark promising bank savers 100 per cent guarantees on their money, and other countries like Britain putting limits on how much savers will get back if a bank goes into liquidation," McMillan said.

In the past 10 days Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Sweden and Ireland have either provided large cash injections for ailing banks or provided credit guarantees worth scores of billions of euros.

Ireland has already shocked its partners and the European Commission by guaranteeing not just private savings but also banks' debts.

"We must restore confidence to the European banking sector," said Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan.

Guaranteeing deposits was not enough, Lenihan said, because interbank loans had also suffered from the crisis.

"There is not enough liquidity in the market. That's a problem we have to address. Ireland has taken an initiative but we're only a small country," he said.

Iceland nationalized its second-largest bank on Tuesday and the country's central bank received a Russian loan to bolster foreign exchange reserves.

UK to make announcement Wednesday

Britain's Finance Minister Alistair Darling and Bank of England Governor Mervyn King met with the heads of Britain's biggest banks to discuss possible government plans to inject as much as $87 billion into the institutions.

Following the meeting, a government source told Reuters that Darling will announce a rescue package for the U.K. banking system on Wednesday.

Darling confirmed in a televised statement that he intends to make a statement before markets open on Wednesday morning.

The current turmoil has also triggered controversial calls for the euro-zone to soften the economic criteria underpinning the euro, most notably the requirement that a nation's annual budget deficit cannot exceed three per cent of gross national product.

Long time ago, I'd no problems with six hours of sleep a day. To some of you, six hours is already a luxury but it's my minimum for reasonable efficiency the next day. Back in the days of National Service, operating on six hours rest wasn't so much a want but a need. The day of a training soldier involved lots of physical work, and without enough rest your body would crumble exponentially.

Then came Michigan. Maintaining the six-hour regimen wasn't an issue at first, but as the years went by, lethargy set in and recently it's been stretched to a cozy seven hours. Make no mistake about it, more is better, and seven really feels like heaven. But now in an Ivy-League environment where some peers have told me they get five hours of sleep or less, a little voice is telling me I'm not working hard enough.

Or am I just working smart enough?

On heavy days I do get substantially less sleep, ranging from five and a half to six hours. Getting up the next morning comes only after one or two taps of the 'snooze' button on my alarm. And during the day performance and attention dips, as far as I can tell. For some reason it's difficult to boost the biological system to keep running super late nights, or keep the pupils open in an extended reading session. How does every one here handle their sleep (or lack of it)?

Ok, I'm the kind of person who enjoys admitting when I'm wrong. Because it proves I just learned something new. So, I will admit. I was wrong about Getting Rid Of Credit Card Debt Yesterday! That is if you desire wealth. In that case, GET RICH TODAY, Pay Debt off TOMORROW.

Now this isn't going to work for you if you are only aiming for comfort, because you are not building your net worth to eventually make your debt look like a flea compared to your assets. Think of yourself as a company. Say you are valued (worth) $2,000. $5,000 of debt isn't looking so good is it? Would you buy stock in you? Not to sell you short...(ok c'mon that was good! Give me credit! Oh...that was good too;) Two in a row baby!) But say you are valuated at 5 million. Or even 1 million, $5,000 is hardly a blemish. Am I clear? Stop thinking of yourself as flesh and blood and start thinking of yourself as an entity. In the finances department that is. You can save all that flesh and soul stuff for the bedroom where it matters.

If you are aiming for comfort then I recommend taking 10% of every dollar you make from this day forward and using it to pay off debt. But first, see if you can consolidate it. (See below) I got these references from a man I highly respect, Jordan Goodman.

1. For Debt Consolidation: cambridgecredit.org

2. Medical Debt: healthcareadvocates.com

Quick tips for the meantime which should be a short time since you like to action!

* Pay more than the minimum payment

*Don't use more than 35% of your credit limit EVER AGAIN!

*Pay on time EVERY TIME!

*Start with the credit card you owe the least amount of money on.

I will touch on a lot of these quick tips I just mentioned in detail later so be on the look out. This is one of my favorite things to discuss because so many people are in debt and so was I. It doesn't have to be the end of the world. Remember, what you focus on expands so instead of focusing on your debt and playing the victim, focus on your brand spanking new money management habits!

...Or you could ask the Government to bail you out and see what comes of it;)

"As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." These words from the Holy Bible. What words better describe todays society and political landscape. How? You ask.

Listen carefully to what is being promoted in the Presidential campaign. A candidate promotes government run programs, government leaders are constantly promoting bail outs. If we carefully research and logically think through the socialistic ideals being promoted we will see much error. The error is something as simple as a couple of examples.

First, consider minimum wage as an example. Currently, we essentially have 3 levles of income or "3 classes," (though each of these classes have varying degrees) in our economical makeups - lower, middle, upper. When minimum wag increases occur the low income earners get an increae in pay. The middle earners do not receive this increase. The upper earners don't either, but they are normally the corporate or business owners. If a business owner has to increase wages, they will increase the cost of their product or service because their expenses have increased. Corporate America is not going to take a pay (profit) cut nor should they be required to do so. The pay raise is effectively negated and pointless due to the rise in cost of the product and/or service. Then what is the damage you ask. The middle class has not had an increase in income, yet their cost of living has gone up substantially. This means you have effectively given the middle class a pay cut and only managed to move them closer to the lower class. The upper class is generally unaffected negatively. And you now have only 2 class levels or levels of income, upper and lower class.

Another example are the ideas on taxes to promote or afford the "new" governmental programs and bailouts. If you increase the taxes on corporations (at this time the target are the oil companies), they increase the cost of their goods and services. Again, they will not take a cut in profit. In most cases they will likely over adjust to compensate for future risk also. So, the same effect is here as in the minimum wage case. The middle class feels the heat. They are the ones who feel the economic pressure. Once again effectively decreasing the gap between the middle and lower class income levels. The upper class is either distanced from the two classes (which are now one) or at a minimum stays the same.

Now consider what is being attempted right now. The minimum wage has gone up and taxes are possibley heading that direction (depending on the upcoming elections). In discussing these two scenarios, it is obvious the middle class will be effectively eliminated, leaving only an upper class and a lower class. Care to guess who the ruling class will be? The government will be the ruling class, the upper class. The "other" class will be the ruled class, who are enslaved and dominated, subjected to the will and fickle desires of the ruling class.

What, you say, does all of this have to do with the verse quoted at the beginning? Go back to the old monarchy system of Europe. European nations with brutal, controlling, manipulating kings and queens using their "subjects" as pawns, entertainment, play things and power gaining purposes. Our ancestors, our forefathers left Europe for those reasons. Our forefathers left Europe so their descendants did not have to live under such oppresion, but could live in and enjoy freedom and liberty. When they left Europe to come to America, they set up a system which was directly opposite of that which they were fleeing. The direct opposite of what they fled is personal responsibility, self-sufficiency, hard work and freedom, enabling many to succeed as opposed to only the powerful. How many stories have we heard of the infamous "rags to riches" variety? How many of those "rags to riches" stories are of immigrants. Immigrants who left their own country due to a lack of freedom and liberty and came to America with nothing.

America is the opposite of the old Europe and even current Europe. America is here and is successful because we were not Europe. America's way of doing things - liberty, freedom, self sufficiency, hard work and personal responsibility- are and improvement and growth from the European approach. The United States of America was established because those in America disagreed with the ways of the "old country" from which they came and wanted to improve on them. Europe is where America came from because of the error in its methods. Why would America want to turn it's back on what has made it successful in order to go back to what it has already learned does not work from experience. "As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a FOOL returneth to his folly." Proverbs 26:11. Do you know what verse 12 says? Do you want to know what verse 12 says? "Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is no more hope of a fool than him." The whole passage of Scripture, Proverbs 26, speaks to the current social and political climate in America. Verse 26 through 28 say, "Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. Whoso diggeth a pit shall FALL THEREIN: and he that rolleth a stone, it WILL RETURN ON HIM. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin." Sound like politics and the American condition to you?

A recent Google patent application has the SEO community buzzing. At a bare minimum this document re

A recent Google patent application has the SEO community buzzing. At a bare minimum this document reveals the direction Google is taking its future search criteria. Changes in the way Google will be evaluating pages for search rankings are intended to address two major problems:
- Search engine spam, and
- Ensuring that "fresh" documents score higher than "stale" ones
Here is a summary of some of the general principles outlined in the document. Most SEO specialists agree these are reasonable principles, and it is only a matter of time before they are adopted.
1. Anchor text of links is still very important. Focus on your anchor text. It should contain your most important keyword.
2. Google expects that anchor texts will vary. A lot of identical anchor text suggests an "unnatural" linking pattern. Anchor texts should vary, but contain related phrases.
3. Google will record when specific links were first discovered, and watch how they change over time. Links with a long life span are considered more valuable than links with a short life span. This adds support to the link delay theory -- that links do not start "counting" until they have been in place for a few months. So get working on those links right now, but don't expect immediate gratification from Google.
4. If a new website gets a flood of new inbound links, this will be an indicator of possible spam activity. Links should be introduced gradually and according to a consistent pattern.
5. Google acknowledges that there may be link "spikes", and so an influx of new links will be interpreted as legitimate if some of the links are from "authoritative" sites. Go after links from authoritative sites.
6. If a stale webpage continues to receive new incoming links, it will be considered fresh. Keep adding links pointing to important pages.
7. Links from fresh pages will in some cases be more valuable than links from "stale" or old pages that have not been recently updated. Get links from pages that are active. If you have high value links from important sites, develop a strategy for keeping those links fresh.
8. Google places more value on a site where link growth remains constant and slow. Slow and steady wins the race. Keep getting those links.
9. Pages with many inbound links will require proportionately more new links in order to remain fresh. The assumption is that the more links a page has, the more it should be getting in the future. Otherwise it starts slipping into the "stale" category. Focus more attention on your most important pages.
Regardless of whether of not Google implements all of these criteria, the general direction is clear. More importantly, these points make good SEO sense, and provide a very good place to start when planning a link strategy.

windows xp, Performance, Click, seo, sense, start, important, provide, sense, points, criteria, clear, google, page, constant, remain, steady, slow, slipping, google, links, stratefy, slow, important

“Teaching profession is a noble profession”! We have heard that quite often. If you are want to

“Teaching profession is a noble profession”! We have heard that quite often. If you are want to become a teacher
In Indian culture, teachers have always been venerated and held in great esteem, their importance often acknowledged next only to parents. With playschools growing in importance, a teacher’s role is significant, not only during the formative years of a child’s development but also in moulding the child’s philosophy. It’s the teacher that drops the fount of higher knowledge in the learner, and makes of him paragon of great ideals.

The demands
“A CAREER in teaching is for the brave-hearted,” says Clementina D’Souza, teacher from Sacred Heart High School, Worli. She says, “One should have the virtue of patience and the ability to adjust to different types of children. There should be clarity of speech and thought. One should be able to hold one’s own against the children, able to command respect without meting out corporal punishment.”

It is a give and take relationship between student and teacher and the bottom-line is if you love doing this and can go the extra length to establish a beautiful relationship of trust and love between, student and teacher take it up as a career, otherwise do not, she says.

Different options available : One has the option of teaching in pre-primary, primary, high school or in college

Pre-Primary
This covers playschool, nursery, junior and senior K.G. If you love small children and have oodles of patience and tolerance, then this will be your cup of milk. Pre-primary usually has two teachers per classroom, the main (class) teacher and the co-teacher (assistant).

To be a co-teacher, no formal training is necessary, though it might vary from school to school. The only requirement is your ability to handle tiny tots and your talent to teach them. One should have had training in the Montessori way of teaching or have a diploma in ‘Early Childcare and education’.

Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training courses last a minimum of one academic year and are full-time courses of study. Some AMI courses are offered over a period of two or three consecutive summers, with interim work. One can do one’s Montessori training from RTI and Bombay SZM at N.S. Patkar Marg and Shri Jain Mahila Samaj at H.Cross Rd. The ‘Early Childcare and education (ECCE)’ course can be done from Sophia Polytechnic, Ratan Tata Institute, St.Xavier’s Institute of Education, MRICE, to name a few.

As Trupti Salian from Kangaroo kids puts it, “The latter method may be preferred because it is a play way method of teaching. While teaching primary kids, the stress is on how you are able to communicate with them, since small kids cannot be communicated the same way as adults,” While ECCE is also a fulltime course, some schools like MRICE and Sophia’s polytechnic also offer part-time courses whereby those who are interested can study and work at the same time till they become trained teachers.

Primary :This covers standards one to seven. Basic requirement is a D.Ed (a diploma in education) of two years duration after class twelve.

Secondary
A BA, B. Ed. (Bachelor in Education) of one year’s duration, with specialisation in subject one wishes to teach, is enough to qualify one to teach high school. i.e. standards eight, nine and 10th. To become the principal of a school, one has to be at least M.A, B. Ed with minimum 10 years of teaching experience.

One can do their D.Ed, B.Ed, M.Ed from St.Xavier’s Institute of Education, St.Teresa’s Institute of Education, Bombay Teachers Training College, Secondary Training College (govt.) to name a few.

COLLEGE
College lecturers require a good academic record with at least 55% or an equivalent grade at master's degree level in the relevant subject. Also they have to take the eligibility test for lecturers, National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted by UGC, CSIR or similar tests accredited by the UGC. The State level test SLET is for appointments within the state. The promotion is based on performance, duration of service, and research publications.

To become a principal of a college, PhD in any subject with minimum 10 years teaching experience in Degree College is essential. Outlining a few traits that a principal should possess, Manju Nichani, Principal, K C College, says, “One should be an all-rounder with administrative, communication skills, the ability to be firm when necessary, an eye for accounts, knowledge about the rules of the government, information on all the funding agencies etc.”

Pay scales
At primary level remuneration may vary from Rs 3,500 pm for a co-teacher to 5,000 pm for a main teacher. While a temporary teacher at the primary, secondary level might take home Rs 3000 pm. On confirmation, the starting pay ranges from Rs 8,000 pm to Rs 10,000 pm. Lecturers might take home anything between Rs 10,000 pm and Rs 15,000 pm.

So if you have what it takes – patience and love for children – then teaching is the right career for you.

The moment I read that my income depends on the average of the incomes of the ten people closest to

The moment I read that my income depends on the average of the incomes of the ten people closest to me, my financial antennas straightened out.

Quickly, I made a list of the ten people closest to me, including my barber and my unemployed friend. Assuming what these ‘terrible ten’ might be earning based on their apparent lifestyles, I arrived at a fair estimate of my own monthly take-home. It turned out teasingly accurate, I must say!

There you have the apparent benefits of networking. If you can establish close association with even 2 HNIs (High Net-worth Individuals), you can have your earnings zoom past the rooftop. I have already identified one such person in the super-rich bracket.

Besides, did you know that there exist other factors beyond your control that affect how much you earn? Neither did I until a mathematics professor pointed it out, “Buddy! Physics and Economics are strange bedfellows”. He then went on to explain the whole thing.

A high-school Physics textbook defines Power as the ratio of Work to Time. Here is the equation: Power = Work/ Time. To put it simply, more the power generated, more the work done. Also, more the power generated, lesser the time taken.

Here bring in the two popular money idioms – Time is Money; Knowledge is Power. So, all you have to do in the earlier equation is to substitute Knowledge with Power and Time with Money. Then, the new equation becomes: Knowledge = Work/ Money.

Lets analyze this new equation. It says that the more one knows, the more work one has to do. Now comes the unbelievable part, the more one knows, lesser the money one earns. Yes, you may re-read it for it to sink in. Expressed in terms of money: Money = Work/ Knowledge. So, as Knowledge approaches to minimum, Money approaches to maximum, regardless of the Work done. Howzzat for Economics!

The reality seems to nod to this. Which of the top-earning movie stars we know preferred studying for a degree, at the cost of starting out early on a career of their choice? One look at the Forbes’ List of Richest People in the world and you can find out why it includes more dropouts and plain graduates than PhDs and MBAs. Another surprising peek into the lives of top entrepreneurs will tell you how little they knew about the new businesses they were about to step into. Phewww…

Something equally strange, but amazingly real, is the Pareto Principle or the 80-20 Rule. It says that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. When it comes to wealth, it is difficult to escape the clutches of this simple rule.

Don’t we know that 80% of world’s economic resources are controlled by merely 20% of the nations? Any company will agree that 80% of the sales come from 20% of its clients. Can we also say that 80% of our office work is accomplished in just 20% of our time? If so, 80% of our income comes from just 20% of our efforts. Headspinner, isn’t it?

While we uncover these hidden factors that affect your money, the search also continues for that elusive talisman that can help you earn more than your boss. Hope your boss is not reading this too!

[caption id="attachment_78" align="alignright" width="210" caption="Amethyst Pendant"][/caption]

I thought I should join the current media frenzy on the Amethyst Initiative and countries current drinking laws. First a little back round: The current 21 year old drinking age became de facto in 1984 after the passage of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. This act gave the federal government power to withhold 10% of federal highway funds if states did not comply with a minimum age of 21 years for purchase and public possession of alcohol. It did not specifically prohibit underage consumption and many people are surprised to learn how much underage laws regarding alcohol vary from state to state.

The law has been challenged in a few states in the years since 1984, but always unsuccessfully. Recently however the Amethyst Initiative (named so because in ancient Greece and Rome the stone was believed to ward off drunkenness) has looked to spark a national debate on the issue and to reopen thinking on the 21 year age minimum. The Initiative does not prescribe a certain course of action (read: lowering the drinking age to 18 ) but wishes to open an "informed and dispassionate public debate over the effects of the 21 year-old drinking age."

The initiative is supported and signed currently by the presidents and chancellors of 129 Colleges and Universities. Their reason for starting this initiative are the growing problem of dangerous behaviors relating to underage drinking across the country and observed on their own campuses.

The initiative has been successful in brining this issue to the national spotlight and has been both the subject of praise and criticism since announcing the Amethyst Initiative on August 19th.

Probably the harshest and most hostile critic has been MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They have criticized the initiative going as far as to say that "Parents should think twice before sending their teens to these colleges or any others that have waved the white flag on underage and binge drinking policies."

In this Thinker's humble opinion, MADD has completely missed the point. As the Amethyst Initiative website specifically states they are only trying to reopen debate on this law that has now been around for 24 years (the law has now been old enough to drink for 3 years!).

Here at TWB we "would like to foster a discussion that transcends the borders that are imposed by others and often ourselves." (from About TWB written by Josh). I think that that is also the Amethyst Initiative's goal. Now whether their motives are selfish (money, trying to pass the buck, etc.) or not is not really important as they are trying to open an honest debate using facts. They are not acting like a one sided cable news show. I would more equate MADD's response to the initiative with that analogy, trying to yell so loud that your "guest" can't be heard, or in fact cutting off their mic. all together. I certainly hope that the majority of the American public will not stand for that bullying.

In reviewing statistics about drinking on MADD's own website it is clear that there is a severe problem involving alcohol in this country, and also clear that a large proportion of this problem involves college age students. Clearly, somewhere along the line something is not working in preventing drunk driving and alcohol abuse, and people are being hurt and dying because of it. Clearly there is a problem.

Will lowering the drinking age to 18 fix that problem? This Thinker can't say for sure, but I do believe that their are some deeply rooted problems in the way the country currently handles alcohol and 21 year minimum age as well.

For one thing, we have all heard of people being killed by drunk drivers who are on their second or third or even greater offence. How can we continue to let people like this drive? Of course many times they are driving illegally but that fact that they are allowed back on the road at all is beyond me. I believe in second chances and being able to correct mistakes, but after two incidences of such a life threatening offence I do not believe we should allow these people to drive again, it is not a risk I think we should be willing to take. Consequences for drinking infractions when they put other in danger are not even close to strict enough in my opinion. The current legal BAC limit is .08, this is higher than many other countries in the world, including most of Europe, and yet our minimum age is higher than in most other countries in the world. The system seems screwy to me.

Most arguments for the minimum age involve stating that people under that age are not mature enough to handle the responsibilities associated with drinking. This argument is completely ludicrous. I have always laughed at age limits such as this, as somehow when someone passes that magical line at age 21 they are suddenly infused with amazing ability to make responsible decisions regarding alcohol. Furthermore, at 18 years the country considers people responsible and mature enough to vote, enter into contracts, enlist in the military, and be tried in a court of law as an adult. How can any of these activities require less of a maturity level than that required to drink? Now clearly not all those of 18 years are mature or responsible enough for these situations either, but this just helps in breaking down the argument for "magical age restrictions."

Another reason I believe lowering the drinking age MAY be a good idea is that it helps colleges in not having to effectively split their treatment of alcohol down the middle of their populations. Those under 21 and those not. MADD has accused this of being one of the college presidents' reasons for trying to lower the drinking age; passing the buck to high school principals. I disagree with these claims, as the situation between college presidents and high school principals is not comparable this case. In the case of the university presidents, the population they are dealing with lives on the campus of their universities and they are directly responsible and hold a major share of the responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of their students. High school principals in most cases do not face these same levels of responsibilities. I believe lowering the drinking age would pass the buck to the parents of these students, and that, I believe, is a good thing.

However, many teens as they begin to assert their independence, especially as they enter college, rebel against this word having no real experience with it. If the drinking age were lowered and drinking was allowed in the home, teens could drink with their parents and gain experience in making responsible choices with alcohol and its effects in a safe and protective environment.

SQL> select * from dba_users;

SQL> set lines 30
SQL> select username, password
  2 from dba_users
  3 where rownum < 5
  4 /

USERNAME

SQL>

y con el cambio pertinente:

SQL> set lines 80
SQL> /

USERNAME PASSWORD
------------------------------ ------------------------------
SALT 4195FE23CF28FA4E

SQL>

set pagesize n

SQL> set timing on

TBS TOTAL LIBRE USADO PORC_USADO

SQL> /
Enter value for orden: 1
old 12: order by &orden
new 12: order by 1

SQL>

comando'' | [skip num_renglones [center | right | left | col num_columna] 'Título' ... | off

SQL> select sysdate from dual;

SYSDATE
--------
15/09/08

SQL> set lines 60
SQL> ttitle ''
SQL> btitle ''
SQL> /

Lun Sep 15 page 1
                  select sysdate from dual

SYSDATE
--------
15/09/08

                  select sysdate from dual

break on columna

compute función of columna1 on columna2

spool off

spool /home/oracle/datos.txt

USERNAME PASSWORD

ADMAUD A101B2757316EC78

spool off

Is there a need for the minimum wage?

Should the minimum wage in this country be increased to keep up with inflation or is $5.15 per hour

Should the minimum wage in this country be increased to keep up with inflation or is $5.15 per hour adequate compensation from entry-level employees? Are those in opposition to a minimum wage increase cold and uncaring? Is it really the boost to a minimum wage earner's economic situation that they expect?

Perhaps a better alternative to this minimum wage increase is a minimum wage elimination. Businesses struggle to find profit between reasonable, marketable price points and the overhead required to stay in business. A large part of this overhead is wages paid to employees.

If an employee is paid $5 an hour for a position that produces $9 an hour for the business then he is profitable and worth his pay. The remaining profit keeps the lights on, the doors open, and the shelves stocked with product. If Uncle Sam decides to tip the scales in favor of the employee to gain favor with his constituents then "big bad business" feels the squeeze.

There! We've effectively "stuck it to the man". Now, to remain in business, the employer, like many other employers in their shoes, needs to raise prices or reduce overhead. Either way, the bottom-wrung employees get the short end of the stick.

By raising minimum wage the dollar bill is devalued. Let's say a minimum wage employee earns enough weekly income to purchase a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, and a carton of eggs. Our heart goes out to him and others like him so we force employers to increase his wages. For maybe two weeks this employee can add two boxes of popsicles to his weekly order. Very soon, however, the cost of all his groceries increases so the businesses selling them can remain in the black after paying out more money to their employees who still perform their same job. This same employee with his new found, government-mandated pay raise can still only afford a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, and a carton of eggs.

Unfortunately, the employees above him on the pay scale, those who aren't affected by the increase in minimum wages, are facing the very same devaluation of their dollar bill as well. The intended recipient of the increase still hasn't benefited, and those who weren't in the scope of the legislation are adversely affected. There is no clear winner in this scenario.

The other unexpected consequence to bottom wage earners is unemployment. When their wages exceed their worth they become an expense to a business. The logical conclusion in their case is unemployment. A business will not continue to employ a person who isn't producing more income for the company than they are being paid. In the free-enterprise system, wages increase when worth increases. To increase a person's worth they gain skill and/or experience.

Understand that when businesses succeed people that work for those businesses succeed. If a business operates with large, "unfair" margins, the employees benefit with often higher salaries, increased job security, and occasionally regular bonuses. Put the squeeze on those big, bad, greedy businesses by increasing their overhead through taxation or forced wage increases and it is the worker that loses. He or she will lose as the employee of the business by being fired or forced to work harder to compensate for the pay raise. The bottom-wrung worker also loses as a consumer now facing accelerated inflation.

The minimum wage is not intended to provide a house in out in the country and two cars. In fact, the minimum wage shouldn't be relied on for an apartment and a bus ticket. Think of it as a probationary wage paid to workers who haven't proven themselves in the work place. Those who are worth more will get paid more. Those who are worth more, but don't get paid more find other employment or start a business. The employer who isn't willing to give adequate compensation for higher-skilled employees ends up the loser when quality help seeks employment with, perhaps, his competitor. Most businesses offer starting wages above minimum wage at this point anyway. Ultimately a booming economy will eliminate the need for minimum wage.

Workers who are overpaid are workers who aren't in demand by anyone. They are nearly unemployable thanks to the increased minimum wage. They can't accept a more reasonable pay rate if they wanted to. Increasing their worth to an employer is now no longer an option, but a requirement to get a job.

If the minimum wage were abolished, inflation would be a non-issue for the near and maybe distant future. Entry level workers will enjoy a stronger dollar and readily available work. If an employer expects to keep them on staff they will be forced to offer acceptable incentive. Should the employee feel taken advantage of by being underpaid they will search for better wages with a different employer.

If a worker wants to command a higher pay rate they will simply increase their skills and experience, and, thereby, increase their worth to an employer. In America we have the ability to create our own way and achieve any level we desire. We can not accomplish this by relying on the government to force employers to pay us more than we are worth. We accomplish this by making ourselves worth more than we are paid. Then, and only then, are we in a position to expect higher pay.

We, as consumers and workers, need to cast our votes in favor of free enterprise. It works EVERYWHERE it is tried. Our votes should reflect our desire that government remain neutral in our free enterprise economy. Our economy relies on businesses. They are the engine behind our economic success. When government hinders business from the bottom in the form of forced pay scales or from the top in form of taxation our economy suffers.

Ei pleaca in Noua Zeelanda. Poti sa-i imbratisezi, sa-i tii strans cateva secunde si apoi sa pleci.
