Usually, we riot after winning the Stanley Cup. Or, ever since the cup has made itself scarce in these parts, we riot after winning a first round series. It's a bit of an embarrassment, sure, but at least it is easy for everyone to blame the participants. You're rioting. After a hockey game. It's akin to complaining about the help, or starting a fight after an orgy.

It was an ostensibly different story in Montreal North this weekend, though. Hundreds of rioters took to the streets Sunday night, most of whom were madder than hell at the shooting of Fredy Villanueva, an unarmed 18-year-old who was hanging out with his brother near the Henri-Bourassa arena north of the city on last Saturday. The 'other' rioters, as other rioters tend to do, took advantage of this anger to steal sneakers and t-shirts. One police officer was shot and injured. A fire station was vandalized. Several journalists were assaulted, including La Presse's Robert Skinner, who had his equipment stolen. And for what?

I'm already bracing for the inevitable knee-jerk comparison of Montreal 2008 to Paris 2005: You know, the death of a young person at the hands of the police in a poor, gang-ridden neighbourhood comprised largely of immigrants on the outskirts of a large French-speaking city. If you wanted an event that could immediately distill the towering insecurities harboured in Quebec –– towards the extent and scope of immigration, as well as the long standing belief outside Montreal that the city is a cesspool of vice and violence –– it came ready made the second someone decided fire and vandalism was an appropriate eulogy for Fredy Villanueva. Seems almost as hubristic as a hockey riot, no?

naja, dann setz ich mal beim fruehstueck ein. danach versuchte ich mal meinen rucksack gescheit, das heisst so dass ich ihn wieder bekomme, zu deponieren. das klappte nach mehreren versuchen im hauptbahnhof. von dort aus machte ich mich zur jugendherberge auf um meine beiden naechsten naechte zu buchen, nachdem ich mich im infozentrum mit katalogen eingedeckt hatte. dann reservierte ich mein bett und erkundete etwas das viertel. gegen abend machte ich mich auf um etwas auf dem huegel von montreal herum zu krackseln. von dort aus hat man einfach die beste aussicht. man sieht die ganze downtown und auch die altstadt. zudem hats auf dem huegel eine grosse wiese mit einem see. ideal um sich mal hinzulegen und zsu entspannen. nach der kletterpartie ging ich dann auf s plateau, wo s einfach bodenstaendi kanadisch ist. das heisst nicht quebec! dort gabs ein feines abendessen, bevor ich mich zum festival aufmachte. dort gibts zur zeit ein riesen francofones musikfestival. die haben n 20 jaehriges jubilaeum und war echt cool. zuerst war ich bei ner kleineren buehne mit einer kanadischen band chocolat und dann gings zur hauptbuehne ins grosse gedraenge.

der freitag war dann ein ruhiger tag in der altstadt mit einem kleinen museumsbesuch ueber die geschichte der stadt, etwas am hafen und in der schoenen altstadt flanieren und am abend selber kochen und im hostel mit einem "kriegsfluechtling" aus seattle und einer weltenbummlerin aus chicaco sich unterhalten.

am samstag gings dann los. zuerst gabs da nen grossen fussmarsch zur busstation und danndas warten auf den bus. nach drei vier stunden fahrt erreichten wir dann auch schon quebec. wow diese stadt ist vierhundert jahre alt! krass! naja und jetzt machen sie da einen grossen aufstand deswegen. aber schoen ists hier. weiter im naechsten artikel ueber quebec
