In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon's every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit, and timeless message.

Feedback is always much appreciated! I'm very pleased with the result and definitely picked up some valuable skills along the way. I still have a long way to go especially compared to the amazing people at Psyop, Superfad, and Digital Kitchen to name a few. However some of the things that I found very frustrating before, are beginning to feel a lot more natural to me and with that, I can smile.

I'm now back to the drawing board for my potential 'short film'. A new Canon HF10 would be very useful! :P

That hit me hard on the way home from the meeting, I thought about it even more, we have the opportunity to use the gifts God has given us to help launch what could be a very big stepping stone for Savannah and the students in Savannah in showing them Jesus and the love that he has for all of us!  What an amazing opportunity! I'm so excited! I don't know what else to say but Thank you Lord.

My darling comes back into town tomorrow night and I can't wait! She has been gone all week with the volleyball team from Savannah Country Day School.

All eyes are on China with the opening of the Olympics this summer and its emergence as an economic superpower. Design and production company Imaginary Forces (IF) created the main titles for "People's Republic of Capitalism," a four-part documentary in the Koppel On Discovery series that focuses on China's new role in the world.

The program shatters stereotypes about China, dismissing the old-fashioned idea of a dull drab Communism and showing modern China as the "Wild Wild East" -- an engine of economic growth moving at breakneck speed. What is happening in China affects us here in the US and globally. The futures of both countries are undeniably intertwined.

Spearheaded by creative director Karin Fong, "People's Republic of Capitalism" is the 6th show that IF has done for Koppel On Discovery. The title sequence is an explosion of China chic -- lush, intricate and colorful engravings, inspired by Chinese money, tweaked with symbols of present-day industry, fashion, and culture. In his review of the China series, Tom Shales of The Washington Post writes, "The extremely handsome animated opening credits are worth noting..."

"We brought the results of nearly a year of research, reporting and production on our China project to Karin Fong and the Imaginary Forces team," says Peter Demchuk, a producer for Koppel on Discovery. "And we offered a title we hoped would capture a sense of the transformation and contradiction we discovered there. Karin came up with 45 seconds of visual poetry that sums up perfectly our four-hour documentary series. Both elegantly simple and richly layered, the sequence creates the perfect frame for our program, but stands alone as its own remarkable piece of work."

Twenty 120 have just recently released their 2nd collection. Some great experimental work in here - thanks to motionographer for the heads up. As you may have guessed it consists of twenty x two minute films, and as you can just about see in the image below this years theme is Truth versus Deception. As they state on their website "The idea was to pull together a diverse group of directors free of any creative constraints to create using any medium to inspire by creating innovative content."  The contributors are well established in their own right, and by creating content for a collection like this it must be a nice release. They have certainly taken it seriously, producing some really exciting pieces.

Also, while we're on the subject - PSST! Pass it on also has a similar scheme. This time a collaborative piece is produced by 2 artists, animators, filmmakers etc, with one starting the piece and one finishing it off. More wonderful stuff so feast your eyes.

AND, don't forget, last but certainly not least the wonderful Advanced Beauty Video Podcast series are being released as I write, one a week for the foreseeable future. The Artists are very much influenced by the soundtrack, these are designed to be sculptural forms in video.

So set aside a few hours, or a bit here and there to check out the above. I guarantee there's something for everyone.

I took a hiatus from this series to tighten it up. Then I noticed something crucial was missing - I'd never made any attempt to provide a map, any co-ordinates, for what I'm talking about.

So here it is: a short breakdown of key types of VJing, as it stands.

1. The AV Geek

Obviously most VJs are AV geeks. But when you track back to the early works by people like Coldcut and Hexstatic, you see where it all came from.

The AV geek likes to sample. Loves to sample, in fact. Because they're hooked on video. The more directly, and literally, the video can relate to the sound - the better.

The results have a strong element of pastiche and pop-post-modern. Two of the best contemporaries in this mould are Eclectic Method and Addictive TV.

The laziest AV geeks loop samples from Fear and Loathing and the Kubrick archive with zero editing and little live manipulation. Watch you don't fall into that trap.

2. The Mo-Graphic Designer

No less important in the history and development of VJing. On a bad day, this is the kind of performer you'd describe as a Screensaver VJ because their style is more closely aligned with computer than film.

At the one extreme, you'll see the High Concept Electrician - tinkerers so deep in the machine they can produce sets through the visualisation of feedback/ distortion/ channels from old analogue equipment.

At the other, you'll see beautiful, bespoke 3-D motion graphic design and a high-level of MIDI synchronisation. Dispensing with film allows a much more accurate and minimalist representation of sound. See below.

3. The Animator

I haven't seen this too often in clubs and it tends to be less live. The first example that came to mind was Mr Scruff. As he illustrates his albums with line drawings, it makes perfect sense to animate them for performance.

If anyone's got a better or more developed example, please share. VJing could be a rich terrain for the old-fashioned animator but it tends not to be how it's done. Perhaps the live editing is too challenging.

4. The Director

I've picked out Ben Strebel here because he's a huge talent and a good friend.

This kind of VJ is a director first and foremost - VJing provides an opportunity to test out their original material in front of a large audience. It's like live showreeling, to an extent.

Ben does a lot more than that, and his performances involve motion graphics and animation too. But his work in music video and short film directs and characterises what he does live on a night.

5. The Light Artist

Artists like Simian Mobile Disco and many other big name headliners perform with LED shows. They strip back to light and light alone.

The very best in this field, however, work more along the lines of installation. They aren't shackled by a single screen. Their projections are multiple and the results are breathtaking.

Massive Attack have moved into this area in the last few years, but my favourites remain The Light Surgeons for their constant boundary-pushing and absolute focus on creating 3D-lit moving habitats wrapped right around their audience.
