Our Words Are As Good As Our Deeds

The third Milagros Spirit Icon in this series is the mouth (or lips/mouth.) Our mouths are portals through which we express our feelings and thoughts and through which we receive sustenance. A mouth Milagros represents words and language. In Milagros tradition, representation of mouths and lips is rarer than other body parts.

Mouth Milagros are used to cure both tangible and anxiety-created problems. Mouth Milagros are a symbol of the sacred trust you have with your own body. When you eat, contemplate your meal and ensure that the food you eat is nutritious. When you speak, listen to yourself. Consider that what you say is a reminder to others of your thoughts and beliefs. Never underestimate the effect your words may have.

A man from Orlando, Florida has just filed a lawsuit against the Mars Candy Corporation for false and misleading advertising. Harvey Smythe, a 32 year old correctional facility nurse filed his complaint yesterday after he bought a bag of chocolate M&M's. Mr. Smythe opened his bag and started eating his delicious candy coated chocolate discs when suddenly IT happened. Harvey noticed a small but bright colorful stain on the palm of his hand. When he examined it closer he confirmed what he already knew, the M&M had melted in his hand. Furious, Harvey Smythe then called his lawyer and filed the lawsuit. "When I buy candy I expect it not to melt in my hand, especially if they say it doesn't" said Mr. Smythe in an interview with The Daily BS. The Mars Corporation has not answered our calls but their lawyer denies the accusations.

In our day as a plethora of words fly through airwaves, TV cables, the internet and emails, we do well to hear and heed the following warning from Puritan Thomas Manton.

Idle words weigh heavy in God's balance. God, that hath given a law to the heart, hath also given a law to the lips: "Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment" (Mt 12:36). Words will come to be judged; either we are to give an account of them here, or hereafter; either to condemn ourselves for them, and seek pardon, or to be condemned hereafter before GOD. A loose and ungoverned tongue will be one evidence brought against men, as a sign of their unrenewed hearts, in the day of judgment.

With Yom Kippur fast approaching I wanted to share my new year’s resolutions with you. I don’t usually make resolutions, because I resolved not to keep them as it’s generally too hard and I have been a completely lazy bunny in the past. However this year I feel inspired from within.

I have resolved to not curse or swear, even inside my head or under my breath. I am finding it not as difficult as I thought it would be, but it makes me hyper sensitive to those around me who don’t have their colourful cursing quashed. Nothing like a reformed curser…

I also want to try my hardest to leave Lashon Hara and Rechilut behind in the dust. There should be no room for it in my life, but sometimes the temptation to gossip proves just so delicious. I need to withstand that temptation. If anyone has any tips on how to bite their tongue in this regard, I would very much appreciate it.

I had a very thought provoking conversation with a friend today, about the Ashamnu’s. How many of us have ever taken the time to look through them, and decide that next year we want to be able to say I don’t have to beat my chest for that one – I worked on it, and I vanquished that aveirah. Wouldn’t that just be an awesome feeling?

For me, for some reason, I feel the need to work on the aveirot that we do with the mouth, tongue, speech etc. I guess included in this is not yelling at the kids, something I rarely do, but hey, I am a person not a robot and am so not perfect. But there is a line I use on my perfect kids when they show some speech related imperfections, and I guess it was time to stop and think about the words that I actually used. “you kiss your mother with that mouth” and “you daven to Hashem with that same mouth”. We can use our mouth for so much good – prayer, kissing booboos better, encouraging people, advising, supporting, consoling etc. Isn’t it better to do good with ones mouth than yell, badmouth, denigrate and the like?

I am so not a holy roller, folks, I just want to improve myself. Who is up to the challenge?

I decided to post this today because I really didn’t have a day set for this and it is pretty

I decided to post this today because I really didn't have a day set for this and it is pretty bizarre. I had a stomach ache yesterday, so I took some Pepto-Bismol and went to sleep. This morning, I wake up to brush my teeth only to reveal a black tongue! Creepy!

So I naturally looked it up online. There were two causes for this affliction. The first was something called black, hairy tongue, which is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria on the tongue. Yuck. Fortunately, that was not what I had.

The main ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is Bismuth Subsaliylate. Now, this is what helps alleviate the stomach aches. Apparently, drugs like Pepto-Bismol, that have bismuth as an ingredient, can cause a black discoloration or staining on your tongue for a few days. It is (hopefully) harmless and goes away a few days after you stop taking the medication.

Bismuth subcarbonate Bi2O2(CO3), is a chemical compound of Bismuth and carbonite anions (negatively charged molecules). It is used in milk of bismuth, which, much like Milk of Magnesium, alleviates stomach problems.

I am not going to post pictures of this because its pretty nasty. If you want, just google black tongue.

Pulling into work the other morning, the radio station I was listening to broke for a news update.

Pulling into work the other morning, the radio station I was listening to broke for a news update. Having spent most of the last half of my life in LA County, it still gives me jolt when I listen to the news broadcasts for Ventura County which is much smaller in size and population. All the broadcasts I can usually relate to in some basic way - having been there, lived near there, or somehow. The news that morning led with the story of an armed robbery the night before of two 7-Elevens.

Apparently, a heavyset man armed with a knife held up the first store and ran off on foot. Then, not long after, went to a second store and did the same thing. But it was the location of the first store that made me pause for a minute and think. The first store is one that is in my immediate neighborhood and one that I frequent on a daily basis. In fact, on nights that I have stayed up late studying or working, I will often stop by before I go to sleep at 2-3am in the morning. The robbery occurred at 2:30am. It is very possible that I could have been there when it happened, had I decided to grab a quick treat before bed that night.

Talking about it with a friend later, I wondered aloud how the man who worked the night shift, every single night, was doing. He's a nice guy - quiet but always friendly and willing to let me slide on the last $0.50 cents or so that I am short on my order. Then I wondered how I would have reacted had I indeed been there. I hope that I would have been smart enough to keep my big mouth shut but I probably would not have. That's when I started getting pissed. That is MY store where I bring MY KIDS. I feel comfortable going there, regardless of time. Who the heck is this "heavyset" man that thinks he has the right to try and take any of that away from me?

Then it hit me, yeah, it's a good thing I wasn't thirsty at 2:30am that morning because I definitely would not have kept my big mouth shut.

Yen Son Commune, Yen Chau District in the northern province of Son La to have a look at what everyone is talking about: the eerie beauty and mystery of the Chi Day caves in Dan Village.

While the series of caves has been known for centuries by locals, it was only last year that word of mouth started to spread to the general public, pulling in a great number of visitors throughout the country. The visitors are entranced by the incredible sites of the variously shaped stalactites as if paradise has appeared in front of them.

The caves aren’t news to everyone. The Thai ethnic elders of Dan Village say their community has known about the caves. It wasn’t until last year, however, that the caves were considered as anything but big holes leading inside the mountain. They had never thought about exploring inside.

The series of Chi Day caves includes five separate caves, although only three are open to visitors, according to Kieu Duc Nam, head of the site management board. He imagines that the two remaining caves will be open to tourists soon.

In the recent drive for tourism, the caves were fixed up to receive visitors, although the site has yet to be officially recognised as a destination for tourists. Nevertheless, hundreds of people are now coming to the site daily.

The caves can thank simple word of mouth for their recent popularity. After the first tourists visited the caves and enjoyed them, they introduce the caves to their friends. Gradually, more and more people came to know about this recent discovery, and the caves now receive thousands of visitors on its busiest days on holidays and weekends, according to Nam.

“The caves are estimated to be nearly 1,000m above sea level,” Nam said. “Over millions of years, the vicissitudes of time and the deformation of the earth’s crust created these caves with multiform stalactites.”

New world inside

On our visit, we climbed nearly 300m to visit the highest cave, which is 500m in depth.

“Hoping to keep the cave’s natural beauty, we have only made several simple steps and handrails to help visitors reach the caves,” said Nam.

Stepping into the caves is like stepping into another world; leaving the bright green fields and forests behind and entering into the cool, damp grey of a mystical world.

Visitors may be drenched in sweat after making the climb up, but that sweat evaporates in the cool atmosphere inside the mountain. The effect is reverse in the summertime, when the caves offer an escape from the chilly winds.

“The caves are warm in the winter, but cool in summer,” confirmed Phong.

Nguyen Bich Thuan, who works for the provincial Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, was happy for the cool-down after making the trek to the cave.

“The feeling of fatigue disappears,” exclaimed Thuan. “I just feel cheerful and satisfied because I reached my goal.”

Not only do the caves offer a break from the heat, but the wonderful sites of variously shaped stalactites dripping from the ceiling. Staring at the formations can be like staring at clouds, looking for animals or fruits or objects in the randomly shaped visions.

The strongest vision is the thousands of white stalactites that come together into a giant elephant, which is why locals call this spot the Elephant Cave. The elephant even has the root of a tree winding around its nose.

“Legend has it that the giant elephant once devastated the village,” explained Phong. “Then God caught and punished it by putting it on a chain in the cave.”

One look at the elephant and the story is almost believable, especially as the sun dances over the creature, making it sparkle and seemingly come to life.

In addition to the grandesque of the elephant, this cave also offers four large rooms linked to each other by narrow doors just big enough for one person to squeeze through.

“It’s such a wonderful view. A large space full of secrets behind a narrow door is a perfect arrangement of the Creator,” said Truong Dai Chien from Ha Noi after wiggling through one of those passages. “The mysteries of the cave encourage me to explore.”

In local Thai language, chi day means ‘possible’. During the resistant war against the French, Vietnamese soldiers built a base deep in the cave.

“They believed that they would be safe in the cave, helping them to win the resistance war,” Nam told us.

The next cave we entered was a switch from the grandeur of an elephant to the small scale, as we walked into some kind of miniature world.

Countless perfectly round stones were scattered all over the floor, taking the shapes of various living and non-living things. Visitors searched around, sifting through the various shapes, discovering a sea of animals including tortoises, crocodiles and seals.

“I’m impressed with the pure, wild and magnificent beauty of the caves which haven’t been hurt by the human touch,” said Hoang Gia Bao from Ha Noi. “The caves should be recognised as natural heritage of the country, and they are a gift that Mother Nature granted Son La Province.

“The caves are an excellent asset for tourism, proper attention should be paid to them as well as proper investment.”

Changing lives

Dr Vu Van Phai, member of the Viet Nam Cave Association, said that the association is certainly interested in checking out these new caves.

“My colleagues and I plan to come to Chi Day Caves as soon as we can,” Phai said. “The management board and local authorities look after the natural environment as all the tourists heading to the cave will likely affect the lives of the villagers.

“Tourism promotion should be carried out provided that it doesn’t impact local lives and the environment,” he added. “The authorities have to set a limit on tourists to avoid disrupting local society and the landscape.”

Since Chi Day Caves began attracting tourists, several villagers have switched from farming to catering to tourists. Vi Van Cu used to work solely on his maize field like many other farmers, but now he sells soft drink and looks after tourists’ vehicles. While he’s kept his farming job, Cu and his wife’s small kiosk brings in a welcome VND1 million per month.

“When the cave system is officially recognised, I can only imagine the number of tourists who will be coming here,” he said. “I plan to open more kiosks to sell food and build huts for rent.”

A board, including 13 people from Yen Son Commune, has taken charge of managing and protecting the cave system. They’re currently asking the provincial Department of Culture and Information to recognise the caves as a tourism site.

“We all joined the board voluntarily, receiving no guaranteed salary but only 10 per cent of profits from ticket sales,” said the head of the cave management board, Kieu Duc Nam.

“We have already contributed VND160 million of our own money and worked several days to build the steps leading to the caves and suspend lights above the stalactites to serve the tourists,” he explained. “We mobilised all the men in the village to work with all their might.

“Although the caves have just been discovered, they have attracted tourists from many provinces such as Binh Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and even a group of Chinese sightseers,” said Nam. “However, it has yet to be visited by any team of scientists or surveyors.”

The management board now wants the caves that they’re so proud of, and have put so much work into, to be officially recognised and to receive the investment it deserves.

“If we are allowed, we will set up more tourism services,” said Nam. “As locals, we have been strongly attached to the caves for many generations. We are in the best position to nurture both sightseeing and the environment.”

One visitor Chien agrees that investment is needed, but advises that nothing should be done that would tarnish the natural beauty of these caves.

“The path that leads to the community of caves should be kept natural, only hazards should be removed,” he said. “Many tourists, myself included, enjoy the challenge of the climb.”

The beauty of the butterflies and violet wild flowers that line the trail help encourage visitors along. The virginal beauty of nature surrounding these magnificent caves are an ode to the magnificent creations of nature that lie inside the caves. With their evident potential for tourism, it’s only a matter of time before investment begins to flow. In this respect, I agree with the other visitors that the area’s natural beauty must be kept sacred.

The mouth is opened.
You can see the labor camp inside
working on the words to end all words,
at least for a while,
at least to hint an end exists,
pressing the strategic geometry of influence
to restate the circumstantial evidence
into metaphors of the ineffable,

something,

to eclipse both the final say and sayer.

The feet that bring that good news
matched only by the
beautiful belly buttons of better bards,
the omphalos of humanity.

A cloud is rising beyond the trees.
It’s in the air, you know.
We breathe it.
The birds know this substance well.

Full of thought and being,
ghosts live there, you know.
We breathe it.
Spirits know this substance well.

Inhaling all the common memes
we hold our breath and dive in search of life.
Exhaling speaks the blue-green mantra,
Stokes the fire, affirms the strife.

Each thought we breathe informs a story:
we see now how they spin their glory.
Word-weary we wait…
we breathe.
We fan the flame and wonder.
What gods have put together
Let no one put asunder.

Vital vapors reach a verity of height and heat,
cool into words and descend.
The best neither fogs a friend
nor floods a foe,

but infuses life with life.

4
So many sentient poets now
afloat beyond belief
to challenge all pat answers
and ever seek relief
from arrivals on the scaffolding
still weary from their climb
who want to set up housekeeping
and corner every rhyme.

"This is not it! We are not done!"
The fervent mouths will shout,
"Rest and then arise again
and work the inward out!"

5
It sounds so simple when you say so.
The air sparkles with largesse
and I fly before I think to flap.

It's the itchy dreams that form us, you know.

These dance
when, at last,
they hear the music.

know they know
they know

Wow, did you see this episode last night on E4? If not you defo missed out, what a cliffhanger, slightly predictable but I never foresaw what happened to Dan.

For those who didn't see it, I have written it down for you below (CONTAINS SPOILERS!)

This episode opens with Gavin DeGraw singing next to Jamie "I Don't Want to Be", its nice to hear that song again, I miss it not being the opening song for the show. We next move on to Lucus who is necking shots down his neck, drowning his sorrows about Lindsey moving on, not facing his problems. We see him in various state.

Lucus is then woken up hungover by Jamie and Nathen "your room smells of ass" ahhh great line! Lucus also has a mohawk...hmmm defo not 2008 style, although it isn't explained how he got it. Nathen explains he is suspended from coaching for 10 games, but there is only 11 left in the season and that Lucus must face his news, as "the darkness doesn't have any answers." As Jamie looks in awe of Lucus hair style, its no surprise to see him supporting one a couple of scenes later!

Haley goes to Lucus and they get rid of his hair, thank goodness, but on the way she explains that he broke Peyton's heart by telling her he hates her, and that he wishes she never came back as she is the cause of all his problems. Hayley tells Lucus to stop the car, at a green light, and moments later their car is attacked by a water balloon, to express her inner feelings "kinda like Peyton's heart". She pleads with him to decide who he wants and to make up his mind, up on the roof of Clothes over Bro's, which is where Peyton threw the balloons from, but has gone at this point, as its about time he decides just exactly who he wants; Brooke, Peyton or Lindsey.

Brooke and Angie have 8 days left together before she must return home. Brooke tells Angie that they are going to the beach today, but gets a phone call from the adoption people, saying that Angie is going home today instead. Brooke panics Angie isn't well enough to go home, and takes her to see the doctor who performed the operation, and he tells her she must let her go as she is strong enough.

Jamie and Nathen are watching basketball, when Jamie asks him when he is going to be playing for NBA again; his reply, he probably never will. Nathen realises that Jamie is looking forward for him to making his big comeback, and continues to practice with Quentin. Nathen sees Jamie playing basketball with rolled up socks, and questions him about it. Its not till Nathen goes outside, and sees the proper ball in the pool, that he knows Jamie is too afraid to go back into the pool after his accident. So Nathen retrieves the ball for him, although doesn't get wet doing so :S On the way home, Jamie reveals to Nathen he is scared of the pool, and he goes on to tell Nathen its ok if he wants to quit.

After finding he is second on the list to receive a heart, Dan finds out who is number 1 and visits them delivering flowers to the Reverend. Dan tells him that he is being selfish in hogging the heard. A nurse interrupts them, and he tells her he is making him comfortable. She goes on to offer Dan a pillow, which he accepts, for ulterior motives. He makes a deal with reverend, if he dies, Dan will spend the rest of the team seeking redemption. Dan tells the Reverend, that he needs to take one for the team, as he has lived a long life, but Dan still needs the heart to allow time for his redemption. But he looks at the card Jamie gave him, and decides not to murder him after all. Dan returns to visit the Reverend, to find he died, giving Dan the signed he wanted.

After finishing with Lucus, Haley goes to see Peyton, at the studio, to record her new album, and assures her Lucus doesn't hate her, showing her the predictions her and Lucus made before each school year. Each year (bar 1 or 2) it always seemed to involve Peyton. But Peyton still doesn't believe her, as Lucus' actions are always different from what he writes. Hayley tells her, that sometimes you write what you are afraid to say, and thats where her lyrics come from.

Lindsey turns up at Lucus's house saying she has finished editing his book, and says it's perfect. But really she has come to say goodbye, and gives him a peck on the check. Lucus tells her it isn't done, and she hasn't got his dedication yet, but she tells him he can just email her. He asks if she ever misses him, but she walks away. I don't know why I don't like her? :S

Mouth destroys the tape he recorded of Lucus hitting the player. The station hires a new newsreader, and Mouth is shunned at work. Millie visits, and walk past the newsreader, who starts to hit on Millie, but she tells him flat out that hers is better. She goes on to tell him he should go to Omaha to pursue the job he turned down, and she will go with him. Aww they make such a sweet couple.

A while later, Nathen and Hayley stand behind Jamie, outside by the pool, and watch him walk slowly to the pool to find the courage to jump in, with his arm bands on. After Jamie succeeds, Nathen and Hayley follow suit, fully clothed.

Brooke goes to the airport to take Angie back. With her heart still breaking, we see Peyton write a message to Lucus across the entire basketball court, which she ends with "I love you - Peyton." She hopes if she makes the first move, Lucus will follow. Lucus spots this and is impressed and calls Hayley telling her to come over to the court. She goes on to tell him that he can't run away anymore, as they aren't kids, after he tells her he is thinking of going away for a bit. Hayley provides him with his dedication; that he should drop all the garbage and just give into love. "To all those lost souls who have forgotten to believe in the immensity of love" is what he sends to Lindsey.

After sending the dedication to Lindsey by email, she calls him, only to get his voice mail. She leaves him a message, telling him she has been lying to him, and that she hasn't really moved on, there is no boyfriend. She lied because she misses him every single day. "I just got your dedication and I guess I'm one of those lost souls because I lied to you. I said I was seeing someone and I wasn't. The truth is that I was afraid of the immensity of your love. You asked me if I missed you, of course I miss you, that's all I do." Lucus receives his voice mail, while at the river court.

Lucus turns up at the airport to support Brooke. She didn't want him to come, because she doesn't like anyone seeing her like this (vulnerable), for which Lucus says that's how he has always seen her. She thanks him for being there and helping her get through this, as she isn't sure she would of made it through without him. When at home she tells him she loves him for helping her come to terms with loosing Angie, and he reciprocates what she said. Does she mean it in more than a friendship way, does he?! We don't know..Lucus leaves with Angie's purple monkey.

At Mouth's work, the show goes live to air, but the teleprompter dies. We see Mouth step up and gives the presenter words to say, as he refused to have the lines on paper in front of him. After the show cuts to advert, everyone praises him and gives him a round of applause. But he announces he is quitting. Good on him!

Peyton finds out, from Mia, she has met some guy on the road who knew Ellie, which distracts her. Lucus comes to talk to her, and explains he doesn't really hate her, and apologises. He also explains that letting her go, losing her and then re seeing her, was the hardest thing. Peyton goes on to say she dreams of what would of happened if she had accepted his proposal of marriage. She tells him in every dream, she always says yes! He explains that's its just a dream, but she goes to say its her dream!

Quentin outplays Nathen, and he quits. After a pep talk with Nathen, after sending Jamie to get some water, and avoid psycho nannies, he tells him that he is scared of going after what he wants. Which forces Nathen to play his best ever, and Quentin and Jamie look on in amazement after the move he has just performed, a slam dunk.

Dan leaves the hospital, happy. He spots an old man outside the hospital, who has dropped his cane. He escorts the guy to the pavement, telling him its dangerous, and in doing so gets run over. His beeper goes off, to warn him his new heart is ready, but he doesn't respond.

In the final scenes of the finale, Lucus is at the airport and calls someone (we don't know who, but I do :P) to say he has two tickets for Las Vegas, and wants to know if they will come along and get married. The twist...we see all three (Brooke, Lindsey and Peyton) all answering their phones...

KAMAGRA is not for newborns, children, or women. Do not let anyone else take your KAMAGRA. KAMAGRA must be used only under a healthcare provider's supervision.

Before you start any treatment with KAMAGRA, be sure to ask your healthcare provider if your heart is healthy enough. If you're a man who uses nitrate drugs, like nitroglycerine, never take KAMAGRA. The combination of KAMAGRA and nitrates can make your blood pressure suddenly drop to unsafe levels. You could get dizzy, faint, or even have a heart attack or stroke. Nitrates are found in many prescription medications that are used to treat angina (chest pain due to heart disease) such as:

Nitroglycerin (sprays, ointments, skin patches or pastes, and tablets that are swallowed or dissolved in the mouth)
Isosorbide mononitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (tablets that are swallowed, chewed, or dissolved in the mouth)
Nitrates are also found in recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers"). If you are not sure if any of your medications contain nitrates, or if you do not understand what nitrates are, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
