1,6 To dans quatre ans

Panasonic likes cameras with solid-state storage flavour. The unveiling in Las Vegas of its new HPX-170 handheld with P2 flash is therefore no surprise. The model's highlights are:

1080p recording.

Two P2 slots.

3 CCDs with native 16:9 ratio.

13X Leica Dicomar lens starting from a very useful 28mm wide angle.

HD/SD-SDI interface.

3.5 inch LCD monitor.

USB2 and FireWire connectivity.

Variety of recording formats, DVCPRO HD being the best quality one.

Light weight of about 2kg.

Unlike the Panasonic AG-HMC150 which uses SD/SDHC flash cards which are abundant, the HPX-170 will get its 64GB cards later in this year from both Panasonic and Fujifilm. The HPX-170 has the heavy duty of continuing the legacy of the very popular AG-HVX200.

NAB 2008 started yesterday and is going to be the center of attention this week. Panasonic announced the new prosumer AG-HMC150 of the AVCCAM family, a handheld videocamera that uses AVCHD MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 algorithms and SD/SDHC flash card storage. Capture reaches a maximum of 1,440x1,080 with three CCDs and output is the usual 16:9 HD.

Do not be put off by the chosen type of storage as a 32GB SDHC card can get you up to 12 hours of recording in full resolution and its lower quality HE mode at 6Mbps. However higher quality modes of course provide better results and the best one is PH mode with a maximum flow rate of 24Mbps and an average of 21Mbps. The optics include optical stabilisation and 13X Leica Dicomar lens starting from a useful 28mm wide angle.

The price tag will be $4,500 and it is interesting to point out that compared to Canon's releases Panasonic takes a more progressive strategy with storage. This year's NAB is definitely important as storage will possibly take the no-tape route for good.
