NOVA has created an awesome program describing the blackhole at the center of our own Milky Way Galaxy. It's a fabulous production telling a wondrous story of the great, dark, vacuum-cleaner which lies at the galactic center.

Its discovery, and the further exploration of this gigantic "object" is richly presented in NOVA|Monster of the Milky Way. You can watch it in segments online.

Part One - Dissecting the WordPress Import/Export Format: Categories

I’m working hard in my spa

Part One - Dissecting the WordPress Import/Export Format: Categories

I’m working hard in my spare time on transitioning my longest running project - DVD review site UpcomingDiscs.com, which I co-own - from hand-built CMS to WordPress.

What I’m trying to do is move 3000+ reviews (including comments, screenshots, rankings, and DVD metadata) from my clunky, work-around riddled data architecture to nice clean blog posts. What this means is shoehorning the complete contents of UpcomingDiscs into the WordPress Import/Export format so that I can pull the whole site into a WordPress install - i.e.: I’ll be generating a fake WordPress export file from UpcomingDiscs and “importing” it into a real WordPress install. This is no simple task given the legacy complexities of UpcomingDiscs - but as I’m discovering with a lot of investigation, can certainly be done.

So - my intent is to share that knowledge as I gain it - starting today with the WordPress Import/Export format for Categories.

First - a little background.

The WordPress Import/Export format is at its simplest a modified RSS format, including a bunch of extra XML tags for WordPress-y stuff not covered in the basic spec. Here’s an example.

An Import/Export file includes all of the content from a WordPress install - categories, posts, comments, blogroll, dates, times, authors, post-settings, and so on. In my case, not all of this stuff is needed.

The best way to figure out how to get certain things in the WordPress Export format is to set up a dummy WordPress install, create fake blog posts that include whatever you’re trying to figure out, and then “Export” it and reverse engineer the WordPress XML.

Categories

Reviews on UpcomingDiscs are categorized in a wide variety of ways - take a look. Audio. Video. Box set. Genre. Etc. How does one get those categories into WordPress, and link reviews-converted-to-posts to them properly?

To begin with, WordPress Import/Export has a set of Category tags that describe a category, as follows:

<wp:category>
<wp:category_nicename></wp:category_nicename>
<wp:category_parent></wp:category_parent>
<wp:posts_private>0</wp:posts_private>
<wp:links_private>0</wp:links_private>
<wp:cat_name><![CDATA[]]></wp:cat_name>
</wp:category>

category_nicename

This is the URL-friendly version of your category name. See the TechFold “Site Profiles” page URL for example - notice the “site-profiles” which is the “nicename” version of “Site Profiles.”

You can leave this blank, and WordPress will automatically create a “nicename” based on the actual “cat_name” you specify later-on (see below).

Note: If a category is a “parent” (see next point!) you do need to create a nicename for it.

category_parent

If a given category is actually a sub-category in a hierarchial organization, it belongs to a “parent” - for example, in the case of “Audio > Dolby Digital 5.1,” Audio is the parent, and Dolby Digital 5.1 is the sub-category.

In the case of a sub-category, you have to enter the “nicename” of the category that it belongs to here, in the “category_parent” tag. If you do so, WordPress will nicely nest your categories. If not, they’re all at the same level, and your heirarchy is out the window.

That’s why - as noted above - you need to create a nicename for categories that are parents - so that you can enter it into the “category_parent” tag of sub-categories to link them all up.

posts_private and links_private

I haven’t actually experimented with these yet; posts_private means that posts in this category are set as “private,” links_private I’m not sure about. Assuming you’re not making use of either of these features, leave them with “0″ values.

cat_name

This is the good one: “cat_name” is where you store the full-text name of your category, including all punctuation, spaces, accents, crazy characters, or whatever. WordPress will take that and use it as the visible title for your Category, and will create a URL-friendly “nicename” from it as well.

Important: Your cat_name needs to be enclosed in the CDATA delimiters. i.e.: “

Summary

That’s it in a nutshell. Categories are easy, and WordPress makes it easy to import and preserve your hierarchy. Here’s a few examples of completed categories for reference:

A simple category with no hierarchial relationships:

<wp:category>
<wp:category_nicename></wp:category_nicename>
<wp:category_parent></wp:category_parent>
<wp:posts_private>0</wp:posts_private>
<wp:links_private>0</wp:links_private>
<wp:cat_name><![CDATA[My Favorite Movies]]></wp:cat_name>
</wp:category>

A simple category that I’m setting up to be a parent:

<wp:category>
<wp:category_nicename>my-favorite-movies</wp:category_nicename>
<wp:category_parent></wp:category_parent>
<wp:posts_private>0</wp:posts_private>
<wp:links_private>0</wp:links_private>
<wp:cat_name><![CDATA[My Favorite Movies]]></wp:cat_name>
</wp:category>

A sub-category, in this case for my favorite Science Fiction movies, which belongs to the “My Favorite Movies” category:

<wp:category>
<wp:category_nicename></wp:category_nicename>
<wp:category_parent>my-favorite-movies</wp:category_parent>
<wp:posts_private>0</wp:posts_private>
<wp:links_private>0</wp:links_private>
<wp:cat_name><![CDATA[Science Fiction]]></wp:cat_name>
</wp:category>

Okay, I was up in the middle of the night again during my usual insomniac period (1:00am - 5:00am)... I am getting old...anyway, there was a fascinating show on PBS - the NOVA series, entitled "THE GHOST IN YOUR GENES".

Pretty f*n cool stuff on epigenetics, with part of the program profiling autism (cancer, diabetes, too) and its relation to this up and coming field in research. Also, every mother that follows biomedicine will say "What the hell has MAMA been saying all along, fools??!!".

If you haven't already read my post about the methylation cycle in regard to autism, you SHOULD!

Now, will someone hurry the butt chuck up and do a huge study on this for my/our baby's sake/s!

WAY too many books to review from this last shipment, so I'm going to split this up into three installments. After this one will come the Avengers books, followed by whatever's left over.

Incredible Hercules #120 (*****)

I love the way that everything going on with the Eternals matters. The Dreaming Celestial is standing in the outskirts of San Francisco, and every book I've read that has involved San Francisco in some way have either explicitly mentioned his presence or at least shown him in the background of a panel (we've seen this in both Uncanny X-Men and this very book). Hell, the Eternals are all up in Hercules' bidness, and I'm not just talking about Ajak being a member of the God Squad. Let's put it this way: HE is not the Beyonder. HE is not anyone we've ever seen before. But the concept behind HE and who HE is caught me completely by surprise, but makes a whole lot of sense in a super awesome way. It's not hard to make the claim that the Eternals are the true movers and shakers of the Marvel Universe right now. Not the Illuminati. Not Tony Stark. Not SHIELD or the Red Skull or any of these people. It's groovy. And as a whole five issue arc that starts with the Eternals thinking Hercules is Gilgamesh and ends the way it does, this will stand as masterful comic work regardless of its affiliation with a major event going on at the same time.

This is a book that shows the true potential of a shared universe, because it brings in ideas completely alien to its original concept borrowed from other books that allow new avenues of storytelling to unite and divide. Stories like this are why we NEED these big earth shattering crossover events, whether we like them or not. Because it's all about potential. And I'm not the type of person that's just going to assume that it's going to fail or not sync up because there's no specific reason for it to do that. I don't need these books to be validated by having their story threads show up in the main Secret Invasion title. Because I know there's no room for it, and I'd rather Bendis focus on the story he wants to tell and pace it the way he wants to without having to worry about the added pressure of filling in the gaps or making sure everything gets mentioned. After reading this issue, I'm going to know exactly whom the Skrulls are referring to when they say "He loves you." Do I care whether it's mentioned there or not? Hell no! Because I have the information. I've been saying this from the beginning, but Secret Invasion as an event is too big not to have this many crossovers. Does it suck for those who don't have the time or resources to read it all? Maybe. But I've read 67 Secret Invasion books (counting the Infiltration prologues), and all of them but one have been solid to great reads (sorry, X-Factor #33. Even though the rest of the arc was good, you still sucked). So what's to complain about? Not a thing.

X-Factor #34 (***)

Does the art still suck? Pretty much. I know some people enjoy this Larry Stroman art because he's basically the diametric opposite of the Greg Lands and Salvador Laroccas of the world, but I think there's a breaking point when you can't actually recognize characters easily. And when it gets in the way of actually being able to easily follow and enjoy the story, you've got a problem. But as for the book itself, we have the continuation of the X-Factor/She-Hulk/Secret Invasion Detroit series (which Nova actually gets sucked into a bit, but more on that later) with Jazinda and Nogor's dealings with Darwin (the Talisman of the Skrull gods introduced in She-Hulk 31) at its center. We also get a little more of the new "Embrace Change" aspect of the series, as Nogor is convinced that Darwin is the evolutionary missing link between humans and Skrulls (the idea being that Darwin's ability to adapt to any situation on the fly is not far removed from the Skrulls' ability to shape shift to fit any situation), and he could be the one to unite them all. Of course, it doesn't take, and Nogor is tied up and taken away (where is he taken? Why, She-Hulk #32, of course). I think Nogor is a wonderful premise and a fantastic character, and for that reason and that reason alone, I think these issues are well worth reading (though you can probably just skip X-Factor 33. You might be a little lost, but that issue is pretty painful).

Nova #16 (****)

Not as good as our Galactus storyline, but that's a pretty high water mark to deal with, and a bit of a recession should be expected. Kl'rt enters the Secret Invasion scene here (took him long enough, eh?) and the results are not exactly what Nova would expect. There are some great moments afoot, however. I particularly enjoyed a little interaction where Nova is shocked and dismayed that the Skrulls disguise themselves as children in order to set a trap, and Kl'rt points out that when you're a shapeshifter, subterfuge is really your only option. We also deal with the continuation of Nova coping without the Worldmind and how difficult it has become for him to do even the most mundane things due to his internal suit mechanics being the equivalent of a prerecorded customer service phone chain. There's a lot of good here, and most of it comes from Kl'rt's characterization as the grizzled veteran that's been forgotten by the Skrull invasion forces, partly because he's been busy with all these Annihilations that keep popping up and partly because he can't win a fight to save his life. He's the outmoded old tech that sits in a corner and rots. He's the old Pentium 1 PC that's been in your garage for fifteen years. But he still wants to be part of the action, and he needs to find his daughter. And that leads us to…

She-Hulk #32 (****)

Woo! Shared universes! Kl'rt shows up fresh from Nova to confront Jazinda in this issue, as we have more interactions with Nogor the Talisman, who is still written very well by Peter David. I just really like this character and the tension between his fate and the fate of the Skrull invaders. You threaten him and the Skrulls just might relent, thinking their plans are not ordained by the gods, but if you kill him, they'll launch into such a religious fervor that they'd probably completely exterminate the human race. So She Hulk and Jazinda are stuck with this guy, and they can't trust Tony Stark enough to let him deal with the problem. Kl'rt's arrival really mucks up the works as well. These She Hulk issues have really shown the strength of a lot of these crossovers, in that we're getting all kinds of ancillary benefits that there would never be room for in the main mini.

Three days in Zurich experimenting with NOVA, a 3D LED grid system developed by ETHZ (Swiss Institute of Technology). Very interesting to see what works and what doesn't. These images do not do the system justice: beside being 2D representations of a 3D visual, they don't fully convey the shimmering beauty of NOVA, especially in the dark.

The 'Baby NOVA' is a 10x10x10 grid; this one was at Technopark, Zurich. The large one is a 50x50x10 grid, and is publicly viewable at Zurich Central Station.

Preliminary video rushes:

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.675328&w=425&h=350&fv=clip_id%3D1628892%26server%3Dvimeo.com%26autoplay%3D0%26fullscreen%3D1%26md5%3D%26show_portrait%3D0%26show_title%3D0%26show_byline%3D0%26context%3D%26context_id%3D]

more about "The NOVA trials on Vimeo", posted with vodpod

Fullscreen version available here.

More images and slideshow available here.

NOVA websites: www.nova.ethz.ch and www.horao.biz

We tried out a range of effects and ideas; mainly randomness, dynamic 3D geometry, and a combination of 2D and 3D imagery; using the 3D grid to represent 2D imagery (mainly from a webcam in these experiments), but using all of the voxels/LEDs,and focusing on a single 'sweet-spot'. The image is surprisingly clear from one viewpoint, but abstracted from any other position.

The large NOVA at the Central Station is relatively flat, and too high up for best results, but sweet-spot visuals and 3D geometries do still work, and have an extraordinary not-quite-there effect, as though they inhabit physical space yet are not there...

Choosing a touring bicycle can be exciting and stressful, so knowing what you want before you head out to your local bike shop is very important. There are a number of special features that make touring bikes differ from road and mountain bikes. Over the next series of posts, we will look over some of these differences, hoping to equip you with the knowledge you need to decide what type of bike to take on your tour.

First things first. What are some of the major differences between road, mountain, and touring bikes? Typically, touring bikes are more similar to road bikes than they are to mountain bikes for a few key reasons.

Road Racing- fast, lightweight, typically frame made of lightweight composite materials, with wheels spaced closely to each other for optimal handling and control. The seat and handlebars are put in a position to keep the rider 'hunched' over in a more aerodynamic position.

Touring- strong, typically frame made of steel for its strength a repair ability in remote locations, with wheels spaced far apart in order to accommodate front and rear loads that require foot clearance (check for chainstay lengths around 18 inches or about 460mm). The seat and handlebars are put in a position that allows for greater comfort on extended rides, more upright than road racers. The key to a touring bike is its ability to haul heavy loads on it's front/rear racks.

Mountain- strong, typically made to ride off-road, frame made of strong composite materials, with front, and now more frequently, front/rear suspension. Large, wide tires. There are four types of mountain bikes;

Fully rigid- Fixed rear with no suspension

Hardtail- Front suspension with a fixed rear

Softtail- Small amount of rear suspension with full front suspension

Dual/Full- Front and rear full suspension.

There are many other types of bikes, but since we are focusing on touring, we'll only look at these three when choosing the right bike. It is possible to equip any of these bikes for touring and often people will turn their old bikes into a touring bike with varying degrees of success.

In our next post we will look at the specifics of touring bikes, including key measurements, components, and manufacturers.

Sorry about getting to this so late. I had a hell of a night at my job. But they're here - this week's new release reviews.

We start the reviews off with Nova #16. This issue ties the Centurion, while investigating a possible Phalanx infestation, is pulled right into the Secret Invasion storyline. The space trooper must team up with one of the enemy, Kl,rt - the Super-Skrull. However, can he be trusted. And, sure, Nova's been outnumbered before, but he stands against an entire fleet of Skrull warships. Oh, and did I mention Worldmind seems to be out of action for good?

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning wrote this issue, kicking off Nova's run in the Secret Invasion story. The story is solid and the dialog is strong. I should also mention the great character building work they did on Kl'rt. The artwork was provided by Wellington Alves and Geraldo Burges. Action packed and filled with great hero shots.

This is the first "cosmic" character I have ever been into and this issue is yet another reason why. Nova #16 gets 4/5 stars.

This weeks indie title comes from indie giant Dark Horse with Star Wars Legacy #27. Now, I am a Star Wars fan and could not pass up the opportunity to check out two Sith dueling to the death. Traveling into the Deep Core, master of Sith lore Darth Wyyrlok must find the knowledge needed to keep his master alive. And he must battle Lord Adeddu, an ancient who once kept himself alive through sheer force of will alone.

John Ostrander wrote the script and, as a fan of Star Wars, I can say he puts me right back into that immortal universe. Furthermore, he manages to turn a story about a Sith into an inspirational tale about confidence. The art by Omar Francia is top-notch and detailed extremely well. Brad Anderson colored the issue and did an equally spectacular job. Details added to Darth Wyyrlok's ship remind me of the detail on the X-Wings when I first watch A New Hope (complete with rust and dirt).

A good read and an excellent exploration into Sith philosophy with very talented art and colors earns this issue 4/5 stars.

Finally, we have our DC title, Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1 of 2. As Louis is dying in a hospital bed, Superman is approached by a super god seeking to recruit the man of steel in a fight against a "reality-spanning menace." In return, the super god offers Superman the chance to save the life of the woman he loves. It is then that we embark on an adventure that spans across the various Earths of the DC Universe and are introduced to a disfunctional team of Supermen.

Written by Grant Morrison, he juggles the various versions of Superman well, though the dialog can get kind of cheesy. However, that's part of the fun. Doug Mahnke penciled the art and though a few panels seem off, the action shots and most of the panels with Ultraman are intense. Colors were done by David Baron and he makes sure to use them to bring the story alive with everything from divinity to crazed anger.

A fun read, especially with seeing Supermen of so many Earths coming together. I give the first installment of this two part mini 4/5 stars.

Undre presents Pacha Massive med "Don't Let Go":

I heard it when I was studying about cars in Korea at a Car Repair School:

There was a car named NOVA in the states, and once they exported the cars to South America where Spanish is spoken. And surprisingly, the car did not make almost any sales.

They tried to find a problem, but they could not find any - the car was very good. And finally what they found was the name.

The verb GO in Spanish is IR. But it changes its form in present tense like:

Voy (First person, singular): I go.

Vas (Second person, singular): You go.

Va (Third person, singular): It goes.

Vamos (First person, plural): We go.

Vais (Second person, plural): You go.

Van (Third person, plural): They go.

And to make a negative statement, we can just put NO in front of it, like:

No voy

No vas

No va

No vamos

No vais

No van

Yes, nova is the exploding star in English but in Spanish it means "IT DOES NOT GO." How can the Spanish speaking people can buy a car whose name is not going? :-)

And they changed the name to another one. Then they made good sales of the same car with different name. :-) (According to Wikipedia, it was called Malibu in Argentina.)

Voy (1

Vas (2

Va (3인칭 단수)

Vamos (1

Vais (2

Van (3
