Reading some materials suggested by Kif in preparation for practicum (1pm-3pm ).

These articles should come in handy when evaluating Omeka, which the library has installed for testing. For my real (i.e. paid) job, I recently visited the Center for History and New Media to discuss how Omeka can be integrated with CSU's CONTENTdm-based collections to create exhibits that are more visually attractive, focused, and interactive than CONTENTdm usually allows. However, at the moment, we are only capable of transmitting metadata using OAI-PMH, and have not yet developed an API capable of "scraping" actual objects (i.e. allowing Omeka to natively display objects that are located in a CONTENTdm repository). So one of the things I will be doing for my practicum is investigating how Omeka can be used at the library - with or without the API.

It also appears that I will get to sit in on some meetings, such as the ebrary webinar mentioned in my last post, where technology choices will be discussed and software will be evaluated.

Based on the readings listed below, the major areas of consideration when selecting digital library software are:

establish a clear and specific project statement that includes the scope of the project, infrastructure dimensions, and the overall purpose of the project

explore the software functionality requirements that must be met to accomplish project goals and meet user needs

explore practices at similar - and dissimilar - institutions to better understand the issues involved, compare a variety of approaches, and set a baseline for functionality

determine the characteristics and practices of the user community using empirical data

rank and prioritize functionality requirements to determine a baseline and to set forth a plan for development and added functionality over time if needed

examine the viability of the vendor

determine the security and authentication features of the software - including the granularity of user access and privileges - to determine how the software fits into existing institutional systems

consider whether the budget and other resources available will meet the demands of the new software

come up with a plan for training and documentation

if the plan is part of a Universal Service Fund, it should additionally include an assessment of the institution's technology environment, a coherent strategy for meeting specific goals for improvement, and an established evaluation process for monitoring progress and making necessary changes mid-course

It has been a while since I wrote this post about creating an XQuery OAI-data provider. I haven't done much work on the code since early spring, but Mike Giarlo who was also working on the code has taken it much further and has published a version of the code here. It validates, and I believe the only missing piece are resumption tokens, which may not be to hard to add in. Because Princeton uses X-Hive as their database, the code is X-Hive specific, and may not work in eXist without some modifications. I haven't tried it with our collections yet, but hope to in the next week or two.

What is a library collection? Is it what the library manages? Is it what the library users have access rights to? Is it what the library recommends?

In today’s world of disintermediation, what is the role of the library? Is it limited to providing services, once the discovery process is complete?

Is there a need for specialized libraries, tailored to the needs of a specific user community, or can these be replaced by subsets of large services, such as WorldCat?

To what extent do today’s users need libraries?

Can we rely on commercial players to be guardians of human knowledge?

Will library practices, mainly cataloging, remain relevant?

How might Google develop its “library” products? Do you think it matters if advertisements accompany such products?

I metadati troppo specialistici?

Insomma... qui urge andarsi a rileggere Karen Calhoun e il suo The Changing Nature of the Catalog and its Integration with Other Discovery Tools e prendere provvedimenti :-)

I've pretty much finished writing my XQuery OAI-data provider. The process has taken longer than I expected (particularly since the original XQuery I was using was mostly complete). However, I ended up re-writing most of it, partially to insure that I had a thorough understanding of the code, and partially to add some additional features. For example I wanted to be able to provide unqualified Dublin Core records for all the metadata types we hold in the repository, with the flexibility to easily add additional types. Currently the query supports Qualified Dublin Core, MODS, and EAD records and adding additional types should be trivial.

Implementing the data provider is also bringing up some organizational questions. For example, how do I want to support deleted records? How about sets? For our collections I think defining sets as collection of records (rather than an item and its component parts, which is what the METS records do) makes the most sense. For deleted records I’m using the RECORDSTATUS attribute in the mets:header to “deleted” and deleting the actual content, metadata, and full text. I haven't decided how to implement deleted records for the EAD's yet, I think it is unlikely they will be deleted. I will probably use the revisiondesc tag, with the value of the item tag as "deleted."

I'm also getting a little hung up on ResumptionTokens. I have simple paging in place, but have started to wonder if there might be a better method, the guidelines are little vauge on this.

Here are a few of the most helpful resource that I used while putting together the data provider.

The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting - I found this resource to be the most helpful in actual implementation, there are lots of examples.

OAI Best Practices [NSDL]

Open Archives Forum Online Tutorial

Exposing and Harvesting Metadata Using the OAI Metadata Harvesting Protocol: A Tutorial

Proai 1.0 - "Proai is a repository-neutral, Java web application supporting the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) version 2.0." This may be a reasonable alternative to the XQuery that I’m working on, though I’d like to finish it anyway.

There have also been some recent discussions in my department about being an aggrigator for Vermont based digital collections, as there a several institutions who have expressed interest in collaborative projects, or who have content that would mesh really well with the Vermont centric nature of our current content. So there may be more fun with OAI in my future.

OAIster, the union catalog that harvests open archives and institutional or disciplinary repositorie

OAIster, the union catalog that harvests open archives and institutional or disciplinary repositories worldwide searching for academic and scientific publications, has now reached TEN million records!

"Developed at the University of Michigan’s Library, OAIster is a collection of digital scholarly resources. OAIster is also a service that continually gathers these digital resources to remain complete and fresh. As global digital repositories grow, so do OAIster’s holdings.

Popular search engines don’t have the holdings OAIster does. They crawl web pages and index the words on those pages. It’s an outstanding technique for fast, broad information from public websites. But scholarly information, the kind researchers use to enrich their work, is generally hidden from these search engines.

OAIster retrieves these otherwise elusive resources by tapping directly into the collections of a variety of institutions using harvesting technology based on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. These can be images, academic papers, movies and audio files, technical reports, books, as well as preprints (unpublished works that have not yet been peer reviewed).

By aggregating these resources, OAIster makes it possible to search across all of them and return the results of a thorough investigation of complete, up-to-date resources." (from the press release)

OAIster harvests data provided by 730 contributors from 49 countries and 6 continents, and can be searched by (descriptive) metadata such as Title, Author/Creator, Subject, Language (or Entire Record). These days you can also take a survey for contributing to its improvement.

At last also Europe is going to deploy a common policy for repositories of scientific and academic resources... An international partnership has started work on a project to build a large-scale public infrastructure for research information across Europe.

The Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research (DRIVER) project responds to the vision that any form of scientific-content resource, including scientific/technical reports, research articles, experimental or observational data, rich media and other digital objects should be freely accessible through simple Internet-based infrastructures.

Like GEANT2, the successful European network for computing resources, data storage and transport, the new DRIVER repository infrastructure will enable researchers to plug into the new knowledge base and use scientific content in a standardised, open way. The project is funded by the European Commission under the auspices of the "Research Infrastructure" unit.

Open Access to research information is vital for researchers and helps the public appreciation and understanding of science. DRIVER will be helping countries to create networks of openly-accessible repositories for research information.

DRIVER will demonstrate the potential of a future pan-European Digital Repository service to researchers, research-funding agencies and institutions. Availability of such a basic scientific content infrastructure should encourage academic and/or non-academic service providers to build high-valued and innovative services on top of it.

News on the front of institutional repositories; here is an excerpt of Charles W. Bailey mail on SPARC ML:

"The Institutional Repositories SPEC Kit is now available from the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). This document presents the results of a thirty-eight-question survey of 87 responding ARL members in early 2006 about their institutional repositories practices and plans. [...]
Here are some quick survey results:

Thirty-seven ARL institutions (43% of respondents) had an operational IR (we called these respondents implementers), 31 (35%) were planning one by 2007, and 19 (22%) had no IR plans.

The mean cost of IR implementation was $182,550.

The mean annual IR operation cost was $113,543.

Most implementers did not have a dedicated budget for either start-up costs (56%) or ongoing operations (52%).

The vast majority of implementers identified first-level IR support units that had a library reporting line vs. one that had a campus IT or other campus unit reporting line.

DSpace was by far the most commonly used system: 20 implementers used it exclusively and 3 used it in combination with other systems.

Proquest DigitalCommons (or the Bepress software it is based on) was the second choice of implementers: 7 implementers used this system.

While 28% of implementers have made no IR software modifications to enhance its functionality, 22% have made frequent changes to do so and 17% have made major modifications to the software.

Only 41% of implementers had no review of deposited documents. While review by designated departmental or unit officials was the most common method (35%), IR staff reviewed documents 21% of the time.

In a check all that apply question, 60% of implementers said that IR staff entered simple metadata for authorize users and 57% said that they enhanced such data. Thirty-one percent said that they cataloged IR materials completely using local standards.

In another check all that apply question, implementers clearly indicated that IR and library staff use a variety of strategies to recruit content: 83% made presentations to faculty and others, 78% identified and encouraged likely depositors, 78% had library subject specialists act as advocates, 64% offered to deposit materials for authors, and 50% offered to digitize materials and deposit them.

The most common digital preservation arrangement for implementers (47%) was to accept any file type, but only preserve specified file types using data migration and other techniques. The next most common arrangement (26%) was to accept and preserve any file type.

The mean number of digital objects in implementers' IRs was 3,844."

"The best services of the former RDN Hubs are shared across the whole, and inter-disciplinary browsing and searching have been improved. A database containing all the Internet Resource Catalogue records from each of the eight Hubs has been created with other benefits including improved currency and relevance. [...]
The discipline focus of our service is delivered through four new subject groups:

Science, Engineering and Technology (including geography)

Arts and Humanities

Social Sciences

Health and Life Sciences

The Virtual Training Suite is in the process of being updated and has a new look; it will remain one of our most popular services spanning all subject areas."

"Intute remains a free online service, providing users with access to the very best Web resources for education and research, evaluated and selected by a network of subject specialists. [...]

Value- added services contextualise the Web for education and bring us one step closer to our users. For example, Hot Topics, Limelight and Behind the Headlines take topical and current news or subject stories, and link them to lists of pertinent resources from our database. [...]

Our work using new technologies will continue, building on initiatives such as the Social Science Voices podcasts published by Intute Social Science staff. Current examples include our use of blogs for news and updates from our Subject Groups in our Editors' Log Web pages (Arts and Humanities, Health and Life Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences) and the Intute harvester which offers a much larger database than the core catalogue."

From SPARC ML, excerpt from Judith Wusteman on OJAX search features:

"The latest version of the OJAX metasearch service is now tightly integrated with the Firefox 2 / IE 7 search feature. Repositories powered by OJAX can now be searched directly from the browser search bar, with no need to download or configure extensions or plugins.

OpenSearch Discovery - OJAX now supports OpenSearch Discovery. When a user visits any OJAX repository search page, their browser will automatically detect that the repository can be searched via OpenSearch and will offer to add the repository to the set of search plugins installed in their browser.

Once added, OJAX can be selected in the browser search bar and repository searches can be performed at any time without having to navigate back to the repository search page.

Search Suggestions (Auto-Completion) - Firefox 2.0 has extended the OpenSearch protocol to allow auto-completion in the browser search bar (which Firefox calls "Search Suggestions"). OJAX is one of the first search engines to implement the server side of this extended OpenSearch protocol, after Google, Yahoo! and Answers.com. It is probably the first open source search engine to do so.

Because OJAX 0.6 uses the increasingly popular OpenSearch 1.1 search descriptions, the new features described above require the latest versions of the two major browsers: Firefox 2.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0."

From Philip Pothen, JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee):

"The research community should be engaged at the highest level to encourage the establishment of repositories in UK education and research, says a report published today. While one third of UK universities have an Open Access repository to house digital content such as research papers, pre-prints, theses, working papers, conference proceedings, teaching materials, etc., most have very little content in them, the report continues.

Acknowledging that an important foundation has already been laid in the establishment of a repository infrastructure for the UK, the report – commissioned by JISC – says, however, that the time is right for the development of the shared, national services upon which a step-change in the adoption, development and use of institutional repositories now depends.

Beginning with an examination of user requirements, the report sets out which national services will be needed to support such an infrastructure, suggesting that support will be needed by the community particularly in the areas of metadata provision (to support cross-searching and resource discovery), IPR and copyright, and preservation. In addition, says the report, ‘advocacy work to the author community is critically important in raising the levels of deposition of research postprints.’ (...)

With JISC investing £3.5m in its digital repositories programme and an additional £13.5m over the next two years through its capital programme, the report provides both an evidence base on which JISC can provide the ‘strong management role’ called for by the report, as well as a set of recommendations upon which to focus its activities in this area. (...)"

The report was written by Alma Swan of Key Perspectives and Chris Awre of the University of Hull and it is available from the Digital Repositories page.

The aDORe Archive is a write-once/read-many storage approach for Digital Objects and their constituent datastreams. The approach combines two interconnected file-based storage mechanisms that are made accessible in a protocol-based manner.

First, XML-based representations of multiple Digital Objects are concatenated into a single, valid XML file named an XMLtape. The creation of indexes for both the identifier and the creation datetime of the XML-based representation of the Digital Objects, facilitates OAI-PMH-based access.

Second, ARC files, as introduced by the Internet Archive, are used to contain the constituent datastreams of the Digital Objects in a concatenated manner. An index for the identifier of the datastream facilitates OpenURL-based access.

The interconnection between an XMLtape and its associated ARC file(s) is provided by conveying the identifiers of these ARC files as administrative information in the XMLtape, and by including OpenURL references to constituent datastreams of a Digital Object in the XML-based representation of that Digital Object stored in the XMLtape.

The aDORe Archive Solution provides:

Storage of compound objects (independent of the choice of complex object format, i.e. MPEG-21 DIDL, METS, ...)

Two interconnected file-based storage mechanisms:

XMLtapes: File storage of XML-based representations of Digital Objects

ARC files: File storage of constituent datastreams of Digital Objects

An XMLtape is interconnected with one or more ARC files during the ingestion process

Protocol-based access mechanisms:

Each XMLTape is exposed as an autonomous OAI-PMH repository

Each ARC file is exposed as an OpenURL Resolver

Long-term stability:

Write once - Read many approach

XMLtapes and ARC files remain stable over time, while indexing mechanisms can change as technologies evolve

Protocol access remains stable over time as indexing technologies evolve

Capability to store multiple XMLtapes and ARCfiles.

From Roddy MacLeod, Senior Subject Librarian, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh:

"As part of some co-operative work between the Heriot-Watt University and the University of Strathclyde, TechXtra now cross-searches four static repositories which have been developed through the STARGATE Project.

This is a temporary demonstration of how static repositories can be incorporated into a subject-based service. The four are:

Journal of Digital Information

Information Research

Library and Information Research

Information Scotland

To cross-search these sources, enter a term and select 'All' from the search box drop-down on the TechXtra site, or use the Advanced Search options. Remember that these are relatively small databases, covering information topics. A sample search for the term 'resources' for example, will return hits from each repository, and the full text of items should be available from the sources.

For more information about Static OAI Repositories see the STARGATE website and also Marketing with Metadata: a document produced by the JISC-funded PerX Project.

TechXtra currently cross-searches a total of 32 digital repositories - covering over 4 million items in engineering, mathematics and technology. TechXtra can be used to find articles, key websites, theses and dissertations, books, industry news, new job announcements, technical reports, eprints, learning & teaching resources and the latest research.

Three other new sources have also recently been added to the TechXtra cross-search: Caltech EERL; DSpace at MIT; Energy Citations Database. A TechXtra latest news RSS feed is available."
