In Mumbai most of the developers have discovered credit route from private financers at a very high cost of borrowing varies from 36 to 48% in last one to two months. This is in anticipation of better comeback of property demand. However the recent property expo was disappointing for such developers. The prices depend on demand which is most uncertain. Bangalore and Gurgaon prices have seen significant corrections and Mumbai it is expected soon by a minimum 20 to 30%.

The Apostle Paul, in both 1 Timothy 2:7 and 2 Timothy 1:11, says this amazing statement, “I was appointed a herald.” The Greek word for 'herald' is 'Keryx,' meaning 'proclaimer,' and furthermore, “to proclaim, tell, often urging acceptance of the message, with warning of the consequences for not doing so.”

Many years ago, in the villages of a kingdom, there where appointed town criers, also known as, 'town heralds,' who would loudly proclaim the message from the King. This was a huge honour, which shouldered a great deal of responsibility. It was a position of trust, to proclaim the message of the King to the people.

The Bible says in Daniel 3:4 (NIV), “Then the herald loudly proclaimed…” He loudly proclaimed to the people, instructions from the King. How much more should we be heralds of our great and awesome King? God has appointed every one of us to herald His message to the people. What an awesome position of trust, what an awesome responsibility to have, to be a herald of the good news, to proclaim the message from our great and awesome King, to the people.  

Is it any wonder then, that Charles Wesley wrote this great hymn?

After a quite reassuring speech by FM P Chidamaram, just before opening of stock market, Sensex gave some respite by taking a gallop of 370 pts, thus tending towards its previous 11K level. Given below his is the inspiring text of his speech:

This is a time of uncertainty. Yet, even in a time of uncertainty there are some facts that cannot be - and ought not to be - ignored. The Indian economy continues to grow at a satisfactory rate.

As recently as last week, the IMF's (International Monetary Fund's) research department noted that "the Indian economy would continue to do well despite the impact of the global liquidity crunch." As per projections made by the IMF, India is expected to post a GDP (gross domestic product) growth of 7.9 percent during the current fiscal year.

The stock market indices are important indicators, but they are not the only indicators of the health of the Indian economy. The ratio of investment to GDP remains high at over 35 per cent at the end of the first quarter of 2008-09. The monsoon has been normal. The Kharif crop (especially rice and cotton) has been good. Farmers are sowing their fields. And the prospects for the Rabi crop are bright. Factories continue to produce goods and the services sector is growing at a brisk rate. Crude oil and commodity prices have declined sharply. This is expected to have a beneficial effect on inflation.

The root cause of the present uncertainty is liquidity and not any dramatic change in the fundamentals of the economy. According to RBI (Reserve Bank of India) figures, as on Sep 26, non-food credit increased,

year-on-year, by 24.8 percent. Between April and Sep 26, non-food credit grew by 7.8 percent. Time and demand deposits with banks grew, year-on-year, by 18.8 percent and, between April and Sep 26 by 7.2 per cent. I am happy that depositors continue to repose their confidence in the health of our banking system.

Nevertheless, liquidity was found to be inadequate and, consequently, lenders were unwilling to take risks. Some lenders and investors faced redemption pressures leading to a sale of assets, especially stocks. The markets that are bearing the brunt of the problem are the capital market and the money market and, to an extent, the foreign exchange market. These problems can be overcome if adequate liquidity is infused into the system.

Accordingly, RBI has taken measures that have infused an additional Rs.60,000 crore (Rs.600 billion) into the financial system. The LAF also provides liquidity and, as on Oct 10, Rs.91,500 crore (Rs.915 billion) had been accessed by banks through the LAF window. We believe that these steps should ease the liquidity situation and the flow of credit should become smoother, relieving the pressures that had built up in the last two weeks.

The government, RBI and SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) have been in close consultation with each other during the weekend. I have spoken to the RBI governor and SEBI chairman several times in the last two days. We are coordinating our actions. We are watching the situation carefully and we will respond swiftly according to the needs of the situation. We are working on more measures that will infuse liquidity, make credit intermediation smoother, and increase the confidence of depositors and investors. We hope to be able to announce them shortly. Our banks are ready and willing to provide credit. Suitable advisories are being issued to the banks.

Over the weekend, the US, UK, Euro zone and Australian authorities have announced a number of measures to stabilize the financial system. The Australian capital market and three of the East Asian capital markets have opened on a bright note this morning. I expect that our capital market will also take its cue from these positive developments.

We must remain confident and respond to the situation in a cool and mature manner. We must banish fear. Especially, depositors have nothing to fear because their deposits in banks are safe. Investors must take informed decisions. Before you sell, you must remember that for every seller there is a buyer. You must ask yourself why the buyer is buying in these times of perceived uncertainty and, therefore, ask yourself the further question whether there is a need to act in haste or in panic. In my view, there is no reason at all to act in haste or to give room for panic.

If all the players in the economy remain confident and take informed decisions, I have no doubt that the Indian economy will weather the current storm and emerge stronger.

If necessary, I shall make a further statement later today.

A critical review of his speech:

  • Although relieving, but speeches don't run economy. FM tried to give various factors from Kharif crop to US, UK, Euro and Australian authorities' measures to bring feel good factor. But what major part he missed out is that how he is going to manage the losses done to our private banks by major Global doomers like Lehman Brothers. ICICI itself reported $300 million loss. Moreover, 60% of our GDP arises from service sectors, majorly devoted to out sourcing and related activites. Now with broken West wing world where are we going to find buyers for them. Moreover, just after the crisis surfaced with Citibank ringing the SOS, there was a global bankers meet where even our then RBI chief Balakrishna took part. There the panicked European bankers urged all other members to show losses in parts or episodes so that the investors can digest them easily. Now, just after the first wave of losses Indian sensex tanked to half. What about the rest of them?
  • Why in the world on the one hand he (FM) is assuring Indian investors about bright future, on the othe he is cursing West world for impending crisis:

The First Shot

ICICI bank was the first one in India to report major loss amounting to $264m (Rs. 1,050 Cr) in 2007-08.

Although it declined direct investment in US market, but reported depreciation in value of securities it brought in International market. Other banks were affected too. More here.

The Suspicion

Although ICICI bank is trying hard to maintain its status quo by reassuring its customers frequently through its own mouth piece or that of RBI's. But there still remain some unanswered queries:

  • Why despite the recent CRR cut its not slashing the lending rate to its customers?
  • Why its so panicked over the rumors that its even trying to curb the basic right to speech?

Conclusion:

Thus overall the dark cloud still hover over Indian market. Just cross your fingers and hope that we don't produce any Lehman Brothers, Freddie and Fannie in India.

Like this morning while we were lacing our oxfords for work. Throw in a pair of worn Chuck Taylors into his ensemble, replete with a black and blue skinny paisley tie and he'd look like Johnny Knoxville in a GQ spread. I did one final check in the mirror before walking out the door and decided that I looked, in my HUGE red and blue striped tie, like a multi-level salesperson. Peddling 'performance-enhancing' cock-spray.

I had my own narrow neckwear aspirations but decided that I'd look like P. Ramlee waiting for his girlfriend at Zoo Negara in Masam Masam Manis. Not that that's a bad thing. Nevermind that he just got out of work (he's a teacher) and it was probably sweltering. As dashing a figure he was, it just wasn't, well, flattering.

But sartorially speaking, skinny ties, like skinny jeans, work on skinny people. Even P, who's developed the beginnings of a promising dad-belly, just about gets away with wearing one to his hotel's anniversary dinner. In abah's zegna 3 button jacket nevertheless, bought at one of the Sunday bundles.

Speaking of skinny jeans. While I was at primary school, just about all the cool kids wore tight pants. Thanks to the proliferation of local bands who wanted to be Van Halen or Iron Maiden or Bon Jovi. Being an impressionable young thing, I wanted a pair too. The problem was (and always have been) that I am, well, pudgy. Not grossly obese but definitely not as tall and lanky as Sebastian Bach (Skid Row vocalist) or even Yem Bai (some local band's bassist, I think) to warrant their pants-size preferences.

Anyway, I did my own alterations on a pair of white cotton slacks I wore to school. I was a prefect, hence the colour. It didn't take long to stitch just the bottom part of the pants because the top is just big enough to fit my big fat hips. So I'd slip a plastic bag over my feet so the pant-leg would slide easier over them. By the time I was ready I was sweating profusely even before I got on my bike for the ride to school.

It worked like a charm as the kids gave adoring glances down the legs of my pants. True, I wouldn't pass of as Richie Sambora in red star-spangled spandex. But at least I had a passing semblance to the fat guitarist from Utopia (Mithali Cintaku) or even Ozzy who was a little on the fatter side of the spectrum.

The bubble burst during PJ one day. We were playing rounders (a kid's version of softball) and I'd forgotten my track bottoms. So there I was, batting in my tight white pants. I hit a scorcher and went storming to start my run, As I reached second base, my right foot slid on a wet patch and down I went into an impressive James Brown split. There was a cracking sound somewhere below and sure enough I had split my pants. Bodies were tumbling all around me in fits of laughter. Even the girls a few yards away, shooting netballs.

All of this happened during my pre-underwear era. I told myself that nobody saw. A futile attempt at consoling myself. Sure enough, my nether regions, specifically the family jewels, were coated in damp earth and fragments of grass and what must've been kuah keropok. This last substance scaring the shit out of me as I thought I was bleeding.

So I started to wear briefs. Big red ones that showed through my white pants that the kids would snicker at from behind as we climbed the set of stairs to class. Fuck that. I went back to going commando. Until I was at boarding school and I got embarrased by not owning any underwear to scrub while doing laudry with the other boys who looked so happy scrubbing away at their skid marks. So I got a bunch of them thingies. White Funai's. I'm back in the fold: a happy guy with y-fronts on top of his laundry pile.

Until I saw one of them sprawled on a glass encased notice board along one of the hallways in the main school building. I knew I shouldn't have written my name on them pesky things.

Oh, one more thing. I wear boxers now.

Recently, a large airline suspended a member of staff for wearing a simple cross around their neck. It was a sign of their belief in Jesus, and they were not ashamed to wear it. Furthermore, a young girl was suspended from school for wearing such a cross. In both instances, they were suspended for what the authorities believed might have been, in some small way, offensive to someone. The Bible says in Romans 9:33 (KJV), “As it is written, ‘Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed’.” 

It is amazing to think that even today Christ Jesus and His crucifixion on the cross is an offence to a lot of people who do not believe. It is foolishness to the unbeliever and a stumbling block to the Jews. Some people would want us to water down the truth of God's word, to dilute the pure word of God, to stop preaching about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, to brush over the cross of Calvary, and not preach such pure devotion to Jesus. Some of us would have Christ cheap, but the price of the cross will not come down. 

In the words of Isaac Watts, “Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small, Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.” 

The Apostle Paul says this in our text for today, 1 Corinthians 1:23 (NIV), “But we preach Christ crucified; a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” We preach Christ crucified, and also His glorious resurrection from the dead. Only the undiluted, only the pure, powerful gospel will tell of the wonders of Calvary.  

Oh! The love that drew salvation’s plan. Oh! The grace that brought it down to man,

Oh! The mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary; Mercy there was great, was grace was free. Pardon there was multiplied to me, There my burdened soul found liberty, at Calvary. 

My friend, I, too, preach Christ crucified, I preach the gospel, the message of the cross just as the Apostle Paul who writes in Romans 1:16 (NIV), “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” For salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we much be saved. That name is the name of Jesus Christ, the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour of the world.

Two other translations say this, (AMP) “He steadfastly and determinedly set His face to go to Jerusalem,” and (KJV) “He steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. Jesus was firm in His purpose, steadfast, bold, unflinching and determined to do the will of His Father, to fulfill His calling, to serve the purpose for which He was sent to earth: to go to Jerusalem and die for the sins of the world. He lived for a purpose; He lived life on purpose, and was purposely driven. He did not let anything get in the way of fulfilling the purpose for which He was sent; because His time on earth was coming to a close, and His mission was almost finished. The Bible says in Isaiah 50:7 (KJV), “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” 

Even from birth, the enemy tried to eliminate Jesus, when all the babies two years old and under were killed by Herod, but His time had not yet come. Much later, a crowd took Jesus to the edge of a cliff to throw Him off and kill him, but His time had not yet come, and Jesus walked right through them. Sometime later, many people picked up stones to stone Him to death, but His time had not yet come. Now, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem, not for the enemy and his cohorts to kill Jesus, but for Jesus to lay His life down willing upon the altar of sacrifice, 'the cross of Calvary.'  

My friend, Jesus was purpose-driven; He had a passion to fulfill what God had called Him to do. Never let anything, or anyone from the enemy’s camp try to stop you from setting your face towards your heavenly Jerusalem. Our purpose on this earth is to spread the gospel, to tell people about Jesus, to make disciples of all nations, to serve the purpose of God in our generation, to set our face towards His will, and do whatever God has called us to do with a, steadfast, bold, unflinching, determination. Therefore, let us make the most of every opportunity to serve Him, to set out resolutely to fulfill our mission, in what He has called us to do.

We are God's billboard on show for the world to see. In light of this, what kind of advertisement for His Kingdom are we portraying? When people look at us, what do they see? Do they see someone who is faithful to the Lord, who serves the Lord, who has a high standard in regards to Godly living? Do they see someone who is kind, caring, and who is compassionate and approachable? Do they see someone who lives as a Christian, not just in words only, but also in doing good? Someone once said, “You may be the only Bible someone will read.” 

Ruth was out working in the field, and the eyes of the world (eyes of the co-workers) were looking on. For Boaz said her, in Ruth 2:11 (NIV), “I have been told all about what you have done.”  In other words, people are always watching your every move, always looking to see if what you believe in, is real; to see if you are the real deal as a Christian. Our text for today says in 2 Corinthians 3:2 (NIV), “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody.” Everyone is looking at us, to see if the letter from God to the world, “the billboard,” is advertising Jesus. 

When, as Christians, you make a choice to live for Jesus, the world will look on, and they will comment and even try to mock your walk with the Lord. However, as much as they try, they can never deny a changed life, for the better, in Christ Jesus. Once, we were under different house rules, and in a sense, under the management of the Devil. But when you become a Christian, you are under grace, and your house has a new sign saying, 'Under new management!' 

My friend, each and everyday, the world is looking on, watching our lives as Christians. We are God's letter written on our hearts, to show His life changing power, His power to save to the uttermost. We are under new management, swept clean and shining for Jesus. Let us therefore be a good advert, let our billboard display Jesus to the world, so His light may be seen in us.

Masalah orang nak bayar 'parking' atau tak nak bayar bukan menjadi persoalan, tapi biarlah kemudahan yang disediakan mencukupi dan kalau boleh lebih dari cukup. Ini tidak, kita yang tidak berkuasa ni selalu ditindas macam dulu-dulu, dan pelbagai masalah timbul; jadi anjing barua penjajah, pemberontakan rakyat, dan sebagainya.
